‘Red Eye’ Resurgence: More Demo Viewers Watch Fox At 3am Than CNN at 8pm
by Big HollywoodFrom Mediaite:
Fox News’ 3amET comedy/news hybrid Red Eye is in a league of its own when it comes to cable news shows. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a player in the ratings.
Despite its late (or early, depending on your sleep habits) start time, the ratings for the show continue to improve, and surprisingly, top some cable news competition you might not expect.
Last week we were forwarded this message board post on ActivityPit.com – Red Eye’s online community that feeds its dedicated base of fans. Here’s a part:
The ratings came out for September and Red Eye is up over 30% in total viewers and up 50% in the key demo (25-54) since July. They have more overall viewers than every CNBC show, every MSNBC show that is on before Hardball, most of HLN, and American Morning on CNN.

I love Greg's show and he deserves any and all great attention to Red Eye. Thanks to my DVR I have watched the show for over a year every morning before work. I think if more people did this, a cutting edge Red Eye would beat the cookie cutter morning breakfast shows by a mile. Thanks Greg. You always make the viewer feel like we are part of your group and part of your inside jokes and setups.
Fox, the enternainment network, should put Red Eye on Saturday nights against SNL. It would destroy SNL.
We want Mike Baker….no really we do!
Ever since I had a late night due to our youngest not wanting to sleep I caught this show and have been hooked- it's by far my favorite late-night show. I PVR every show and tend to watch it live at least once a week . Excellent fun, some great reporting, very entertaining, and I agree, it would KILL SNL if put against it, but Red Eye is fantastic. I hate that it gets pre-empted so often even though it's on at midnight here on the west coast, but it's must-see for me. Great guests, biting, sarcastic, irreverent, and to the point. Love Mike Baker, PAB, et all. Great is an awesome host , Andy is so great as the ombudsman, and Bill is despicable as always.
And if you don't agree with me, then you are worse than Hitler !! ha ha
Yes we do! I'd especially like to see Ab News w/Mike Baker.
RedEye pwns.
Funniest show on TV. Personally, I'd like to see it on Big Fox opposite The Daily Show (but then Big Fox airs some pretty liberal entertainment programming, I've noticed. In fact, I'd have to say only NBC is worse. What's up with that, anyway?)
Like I said earlier, it would be a great balance against the outright liberal comedy of SNL. I really think Red Eye would get high ratings from the 23 and up crowd during that time slot, as long as they didn't change the current formula and the regulars that appear. Putting Red Eye against the Daily Show is also a great idea. The 3am time slot leaves out so many potential viewers. I work midnights, so I can catch it on my nights off and I DVR it when I work.
I like Red Eye too, but if it got toned down to be put on the Fox Network it would hurt the show.
Also, I understand your feelings on SNL, but honestly now- it wouldn't destroy SNL. It probably wouldn't make much of a dent. I like Greg's show more than SNL – but I would be watching SNL on Saturdays and recording Red Eye like I do every night.
I discovered Red Eye via the spectacular Daily Gut blog. Since I've gotten my sleep disorders under control I now rely on the DVR. I echo Pete K in appreciating the inside jokes and set-ups. We long-time Red-Eyers relish having our own Gregspeak. If you haven't seen the show be sure to check it out, check-it-outers! It's like "Make Room for Daddy" if by "Room" you mean "another vodka tonic." Watch it and report back to us. You write, we'll read then we'll shoot some pool on a table made of blood.
Greg is funny and the show itself is entertaining, but I have to admit the main reason I watch the show (and why I started to watch it in the first place) is because G.G. has more newsbabe hotties (like Kimberly Guilfoyle and Diana Falzone, among many others) on his show on a daily basis than any of those other chumps have on at all!
Tonight is no exception: S.E. Cupp. In a word: Yum!
Way to go Red Eye!! I am so glad that despite its 3am showing that the ratings are up! I love this show, but as others have stated it is not a good time slot for me to watch it since I am a full time student and I have work early in the morning.
Here here!
You'll notice, too, that the seating arrangements allow for the intelligent eye-candy in the foreground seat (screen right).
Take a cold shower, ladies….
I record Red Eye as well with my redneck DVR. It would be nice if they'd put full episodes on hulu.
TiVo Season Pass
Hulu does have full episodes, I watched one yesterday.
That's true, but not all eps I think they only do one a week. Those were unfortunately ones I had seen.

Yeah, give us more Mike!
*MissQunn*
That part from the Activity Pit was written by me. Nice to see it mentioned here.
That's funny…. I have started to record it to watch later in the day… there is no way I am staying up that late nor am I getting up that early… I need my beauty rest for crying out loud…
You guys should put together some best of, (or worst of), clip shows and run them on the weekends. I mean really, how bad could the early shows have been? We've already seen Andy's orange hair, we know Bill is still a fruitcake, and I gather that Greg has not shrunk since then…come one. Throw us a bone…
It’s no use, Mark, and it’s really OK if channeled properly. Between Mr. Baker and Grant Reynolds on House Husbands (a chiseled ex-Marine/real man), both on whom my wife has a crush, I don’t get in any trouble for ogling SE Cupp or Kimberly Guilfoyle. Demented and semi-social, that’s us.
As for Red-Eye, it’s the best way to get the morning rockin’ at our house. Alright, second best after walkin’ the dog a couple miles. No, sadly not a metaphor in the Mitch Ryder definition…
Lol! Well, the guys sure like to comment on their "eye" candy (S. E. Cupp, Patty Anne Brown etc..) so I figure it's okay for us ladies to cheer a little when Greg has Mike on the show.
Good job Greg, Andy & Bill! Yes, even Bill! I get to watch it at midnight (Pacific). I love this show! I even watch the repeats on the weekends so my husband can watch. One of the things I enjoy is seeing people who are normally talking on serious programs, whether being interviewed or reading the news, get to show their sense of humor & real personality when they are on your show–like Dr. Baden & Amb. Bolton. And then, of course, we want more Mike Baker!
Put this show up against any other show on TV and it will win hands down….especially if Patti Ann Brown is one…….she's so hot they keep the thermostat down on 60
I'll admit I only just started watching the show a few months ago due to not changing the channel while working late on the computer. But now I can't stop watching it because it is some of the funniest stuff said on tv at times
I moved out west almost a year ago, and one of the benefits is being able to watch Red-Eye at an almost humane hour. Now I have a DVR, and will use it as other poster are.
While I'm a trifle past the most desirable viewing demographic,(I would abbreviate that but you know what it is similar too.) I will take some credit for his surgence tho just a smidgen and explain why some day.
Great news Mr. Gutfeld, good work and continued success.
Greg is like a car wreck. You know you shouldn't look, but you just can't help but slow down and gawk. He looks like he's kneeling on a stool as he bends over his little table trying to impress his intelligence on the panel. I love Bill – he is frickin' hilarious. Andrew Breitbart is a great guest (please show your kids more often). I love S E Cupp as well. This is a wicked good show, and I enjoy Greg's witty repartee when his mouth works.
I love Redeye and I DVR it. Then, I watch it when I come home from work the next day.
I signed on for two more eyars with my satellite provide jsut to get a DVR to watch Red Eye; it seems as though Greg discovered Congressman Thad McCotter and introduced him to the sizable Fox audience—and the world is a better place for it.
I'd just like to crowd my way to the front of the rope line, wave my arms around, throw a cat, and yell, "I was one of the first!"
signed, an o.g.(original gut-ter) — stand up, the rest of you, and be counted!
I like REDEYE and watch it whenever I can when it comes on at midnight on the west coast. Most of the time I watch the first thirty minutes and then have to go to bed. FOX should put it on at 11pm pst and Glenn Beck on at 12 midnight. I bet it would cut into Letterman and conan ratings.
Who's he up against? Infommercials and Petticoat Junction reruns?
Congratulations Red Eye! So happy I switched to AT & T U-Verse last weekend – DVR is a must have for those of us prone to trying to stay up and watch. No more missing my Red Eye and much better sleep for me.
Fox has got to get "Red Eye" in a better time slot. It would tear up some asses for sure. I LOVE this show!
That is a great idea! I watch clips on YouTube, but it would be very cool to have a highlights reel every week!
I don't have a DVR, so sometimes I miss stuff, but as compensation, at least I get to watch YouTube clips at work. http://www.youtube.com/user/RedEyeRecap is an excellent compendium of good clips from previous shows.
I think that's a great idea. Put a show with comedy skits, a different host each week and a musical guests against a bunch of people sitting around a table laughing at each other's jokes and agreeing with each other that everything that isn't FoxNews is wrong. I wish Fox would do that. Red Eye would fry like a bug flying into the sun.
Perfectly executed, sir.
Why doesn't Red Eye have recent episodes on Hulu?
Learn to read and up the average, Joe. He's not just beating 3 a.m. shows, he's beating shows in more conventional time slots. As the article says, Redeye has "more overall viewers than every CNBC show, every MSNBC show that is on before Hardball, most of HLN, and American Morning on CNN."
The show has grown on me.
SNL? You kidding me?
I read it and shows like American Morning actually have competition like Fox and Friends, Today, Good Morning America etc.
They have 8 episodes from September (wonder why they don't put up more).
For the people who have not seen many episodes, Hulu now has 100 episodes of Red Eye including some from over a year ago.

I met Andy and Greg…for two guys so snarky they couldn't have been nicer. What a cool show. As a guy who grew up around punk rock I love watching King Buzzo from the Melvins (I know he's not punk) and John Lydon on the show. Watching Lydon say "your precious Obama" was a pleasure though Lydon is no fan of any political side.
I DVR it. And it's the first TV show I watch of the day. Thaddeus McCotter is the most well rounded of the guests in my opinion, he's funny and way smart. Courtney Friel AbNews is very hot, and who is Rachel Maddow. Activity Pit is pretty entertaining as well. Long Live Red Eye.
Yeah Greg! If ratings were a soap dispenser he'd be pumping it in the bathroom!
(come on gang, it's HIS line!)
I'm glad Greg doesn't let politics get in the way of getting good guests, viz Carbon/Silicon or FUCKEDUP.. And of course what other show has an intergalactic correspondent from GWAR?!
Red Eye: It's like Sex in the City, if by sex you mean 'Rectal Foreign Bodies'…
You're right on Wank – and I was right there with you. Red Eye is the best!
You're right on Wank – and I was right there with you. Red Eye is the best!
Man
Redeye rules…….. I love it! The only show ever worth staying up to 3 am………….
CNN before Fox = Communist News Network
CNN after Fox = Cash Needed Network
More PAB, Ann Coulter, S.E. Cupp, Monica Crowley!!
I love Red Eye but when I DVR stuff I often don't get around to watching it. Why won't Roger Ailes boot off Greta and give her time slot to Red Eye.
Red Eye has never had ANY commercials even on Fox and still people find it.I tell people all the time.I think Fox is a little ashamed of them. There was a show on Comedy Central hosted by Colin Quinn that was similar ,but was too smart for it's own good and got canceled for Colbert.
Love Greg…but if that chair they have him sitting on gets any higher, Fox news will have to put a bib on Mr. Gutfeld…
Oh and If you missed HDTV quality image of Patti Ann Browne with that Oh-La-La dress on 8-6-2009 you have just forefited seeing two of nature's greatest masterpieces
RedEye is my guilty pleasure. It’s more fun than ice cream and chocolate sprinkles. I love when Breitbart is on and Thaddeus McCotter.
[...] wonder a 3am Fox News Show is kicking their collective asses. Humorless, crybaby, putzes! Go. Pound. Sand. Share on [...]
Red Eye's one of the only shows I miss since we had to get rid of our cable. Hmmm, maybe we could have national cable. It's my intrinsic right after all…
Red Eye had commercials on Fox early on, but that didn't last very long.
Joe is correct in that Red Eye has less competition. But, what he fails to mention is that there are fewer overall viewers to attract.
In other words, let's say American Morning is getting 100,000 viewers out of a total of 10 million. Red Eye, on the other hand is getting 200,000 viewers out of a total of 1 million.
(Those numbers are examples that I completely made up.)
Three cheers for the "leg chair."
For those of you that can't stay up that late and don't have a DVR, I suggest you move to the West Coast. Better yet, move to Hawaii. It's just as socialist as California, but at least you are living in Hawaii!
Congratulations on your success. It's great for people with sleep disorders (like me). I love Andrew Breitbart and Thaddeus McCotter. Also, have more congressman. Paul Ryan is so smart and easy on the eyes.
One suggestion, I'd like to see it at different times on the weekend. Seems as if there is a lot of duplication at that time and Red Eye would find new fans.

I got hooked shortly after it started. I saw the listing and wondered "WTF" is RED EYE? Brown EYE? RED eye? Huh? So I DVRed it, and my son and I watched it the next day – and became hooked. Record every episode and watch the next morning before work. Only one complaint – more hot women needed. Red eye is slacking and not up to the standards of a year ago. Get the Booker to work, Greg! And more input from your mom.
It was gooooood and finally the HD Dish was justified. I was waiting for something to make an unexpected appearance but I think they used some 'gaffers tape' or glue or something. Man, that was a greatest hits episode.
As a sex pistols fan from back in the day, the Rotten show was great. Lydon tried to take over, it was fantastic. Along with PAB's dress in August, that show was a classic.

Not to mention a much more convenient viewing time.
Try this: http://www.foxnews.com/video/index.html
On the left hand side there is a menu for "SHOWS". Click on Red Eye and you can watch clips. They usually have at least two segments from each show, plus Andy doing the Half-Time Report. Along with Hulu and YouTube, that usually satisfies my Red Eye fix since I finished menopause and am no longer wide awake at 3AM anymore. I gotta get me a DVR, though, so I can watch the whole thing.
Hawaii – nice little country you have there!
Nice work, Mr. Gutfeld. When they said you would redefine the TV medium I thought they talking about cross-dressing psychics. Red Eye is brilliant. Best talk show since This Week with David Brinkley.
That article was ratingsist.
Because of that 8-6-09 show I was given first-hand knowledge of the P.A.B.(Patti Ann Browne) Effect. For the life of me I can't recall anything about that show other than the visual splendor of Ms. Brown…YIKES!
A common sense CONSERVATIVE leaning show that is fantastic! It's success is limited only by it's viewing schedule. If it were on during prime time the conservative stars (especially those in the closet) in Hollywood would flock to it because it is so cool and quirky. Fox should wake up.
So? He still isn't funny. The reason why Fox News has such ratings is due to the fact that it's the only network where republicans hear what they want, while, us, leftists, have a number of them. Either way, high ratings doesn't make it good. Or am I to assume "Transformers" is a classic, because it made 300 million dollars?
Yeah…..and when (1)news outlet (Fox) ratings exceed all of your leftist outlets COMBINED, it's show's the power of the rest of us who don't buy into your liberal crap. And, just because Red Eye doesn't spew the leftist view points doesn't mean it's not funny. Or am I to assume it's only funny when the left delivers the jokes?
Red Eye is my "dirty little secret". Greg is very insightful and funny at the same time. A very rare talent indeed in this day and age. Where else can I get my Ann Coulter fix and GWAR commentary at the same time. It's a virtual buffet of entertainment goodness. Let's not forget the ladies, try and keep it clean but let's be honest and say that you see Patti Ann Brown, Andrea Tantaros and SE Cupp in a different light. Thank GOD Father Jonathan is on Friday's, makes me feel a little less dirty;)
I am in my 60's and love the heck out of this show. It just goes to show the young and hip to the over-the-so-called-hill crowd love this show. I love Greg; Bill (adorable and quit putting him down please); Andrew and his wild eyes; Patty Ann Brown (a natural, brainy beauty); Baker (cute), Ann Coulter who gets to show her warm and fun personality rather than coming across her usual brash (I think she is great) ; Breitbart (I love him) and some of those really funny comedians that are not household names. Great show and please give SNL a run for their money.
"Along with PAB's dress in August"
You mean the blue one, I assume. I couldn't listen to a word anyone said when she was onscreen in that episode.
no crap batman
