‘New York Times’: Hollywood Wrong on Polanski
by Big HollywoodDear Hollywood,
Wake up call: Your position on the Polanski matter is even too decadent for the New York Times:
“Roman Polanski was arrested on Saturday at the Zurich airport on an American-issued warrant. But to hear the protests from the French, the Poles and other Europeans, you might have thought the filmmaker was seized by some totalitarian regime for speaking truth to power. …
“But hold on a moment. After being indicted in 1977, didn’t Mr. Polanski, now 76, confess to having sex with a 13-year-old girl after plying her with Quaaludes and Champagne? Didn’t he flee the United States when the plea bargaining seemed to fall apart, raising the prospect of prison time? Isn’t there a warrant for his arrest? …
“In Europe, the prevailing mood — at least among those with access to the news media — seemed to be that Mr. Polanski has already “atoned for the sins of his young years,” as Jacek Bromski, the chief of the Polish Filmmakers Association, put it.
“We disagree strongly, and we were glad to see other prominent Europeans beginning to point out that this case has nothing to do with Mr. Polanski’s work or his age. It is about an adult preying on a child. Mr. Polanski pleaded guilty to that crime and must account for it.”

……. Intellectuals like Woody Allen seem to be able to excuse Polanski's behavior which says a lot about intellectuals.
Hollywood's backing of Polanski on this issue is a perfect example of how the Hollywood elite truly believe they are above the law and should be exempt from it. One also has to wonder how many other girls has this man raped and molested over the years. You would think that even the Euro-trash elitists would care something for protecting their own children.
"Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools…"
Wow, the NYTimes actually recognizes some straight facts rather than allowing Whoopi Goldberg and her friends to be the voice of reason (?) in this case. I guess the Times will go out of business even sooner than expected if the Hollywood libs quit buying this paper while they sip their $7.00 lattes.
I guess I have to give the NY Times credit for at least living up to the broken clock standard. Oh, wait…broken clocks are right twice a day. Sorry NYT, while you are on the correct side in this instance, it's still not good enough.
Uhmm… exactly how did Polanski atone "for the sins of his young years"? With gala luncheons? Red carpet premiers? Vacationing on white sanded beaches?
But, after all, he is an art-eest, isn't he? Who cares for a no-name, 13 year old girl? She's not one of the cultural elite, so why the fuss, right?
If they accepted Michael Jackson's sleeping habits with pre-pubescent boys, surely they will accept a sodomizer of young girls, right?
After all, what's more important, the career of an Oscar winner… or justice?
Gosh, people. Grow up.
this isn't the first- nor last- time Hollywood's been wrong…
This issue strikes right at the heart of right thinking Americans. Not even an issue of proper justice, it's about retribution- striking back at those who have deemed themselves morally superior. Now they stand naked and exposed, defending that which is indefensible.
Nice job guys…
“atoned for the sins of his young years,” yeah, by living a life of pampered luxury and fawned over as a virtual political prisoner by the glitterati? boy, that's pretty much the same as spending it in a gulag.
one other thing- the scumbag is lucky the girl wasn't my daughter, or in my particular case, one of my nieces, or 'atoning for his sins' would have an entirely different meaning…
I can't believe I agree with a NYT's editorial. But I do. (Now if I could only figure out why that monkey is flying out of my rear end.)
If the NY Times is critical of the Liberal "cause of the day", you know that cause is screwed up. The Hollywood types won't see that though and just start calling the NY Times a Right-wing extremest rag for daring to criticize them.
Lest we forget Woody Allen had relations with a foreign girl he adopted. One perv covering the other pervs back
Well according to Whoopi, it wasn't rape-rape. That should explain it all right there. Case closed. (sarc)
Polanski arrested Saturday. Editorial appears Wednesday.
Gee, I guess the new policy of watching Fox News and checking Breitbart sites to know what is happening in the world is working. But NYT, you might want to try getting rid of the time lag.
I recall reading a study that the odds of sexual deviancy increase with one's education. But I think it matters what kind of education. The Nietzschean, Sorelian, and Foucaultian inspired cultural relativism that has infested our universities has Trojan horsed an obliteration of moral standards that had once been preserved by Christianity. I'm a libertarian deist (somewhat in the mold of Spinoza) and even I can appreciate that.
But the bigger issue is how to preserve Christian moral standards with such a corrupt atheistic nihilistic intelligentsia that would excuse the behavior displayed by Polanski in the case of the molested young girl (a similar corruption very vividly shown to have trickled down to the masses with the illicit ACORN tapes)? I argue for a resurgence of a natural law understanding of human nature, adapted to the demands of modern society.
This is a very difficult philosophical problem indeed to solve in a rational or formal logical manner. The ancients, such as Aristotle, argued that such deviant behavior that was commonly understood to be naturally morally repugnant, such as incest or molestation, were self-evidently to be forbidden in society. This is a problem in as much as the Greeks were noted for their homosexuality, with older men often taking pubescent boys as lovers. What disgusts us in our Christian (and God forbid, post-Christian) society was found in some parts of Greece to be a given and culturally accepted.
What is needed isa renaissance of the philosophy begotten by the Scholastic period, with its synthesis of rationality and Christianity, which led to secular humanism. The secular humanism strand of philosophy must be emphasized, even as the left seeks to destroy its religious roots. The left is doing such a marvelous job of cultural and civilizational destruction in this country, it is leaving the intellectuals of the right on the defensive, combating every newly arising chimera that comes along. We must stop the bleeding at its source!
Conservative intellectuals, we must go on the attack and expose such frauds as would support an artist taking advantage of a young girl, and defeat them at the level of the essence of the cultural problem. It is not enough to show moral indignation any longer. Our country's moral health is at stake!
With all due respect to everyone who is doing such a great job staying active and engaged with the left. Kyle

I'm not sure how to react. I'm glad that a good portion of the leftists agree with common decency and realize that supporting Polanski is akin to supporting child rape and against justice. As demonstrated by Christian Toto's article yesterday about HuffPo comments, most people, regardless of ideology, understand that. But then I just hang and shake my head in disbelief with people that do sign a petition in support of Polanski. How can these few folks be so far off base and just morally confused?

Goldberg's comments were appalling. Where are all the "woman's" groups and why aren't they calling for her head? The hypocrisy is telling.
Perhaps we need a list of the companies who advertise on The View and start some sort of boycott similar to what they did to Glenn Beck for his comments. Maybe send them a message that we don't support companies who advertise on shows that sponsor the notion that adults who have non-consensual sex with and sodomize children after they've drugged their prey is somehow not "rape-rape".
Let's face it, most of the Hollywood people who are so vocally defending Polanski are so vapid they probably don't even have any idea who he is or what he did. The guy is an OLD MAN, and he hasn't lived or worked in this country for 30 years. These Hollywood sheeple are just jumping on the latest "cause celebre" to get their names in the paper. What a bunch of idiots. And Woody Allen? He should be Polanski's cellmate!
Because they secretly long for the legalization of the perversion they defend.
They'll never admit it, but someone who defends a rapist of any kind is someone who wishes they could do the same.
suppose it's better than 'despicable' or 'douchebag'… dingus most likely an upgrade.____You are correct in your assertion. You obviously were a product of the pre 1977 Dept of Education era as were we. How our posts could be construed as a defense is amazing- it was a pitchfork and torch crowd (who were righteously indignant, no doubt) that we waded into with a nuanced take.____Bad guy, needs to be brought to justice. Execution seems a bit harsh. That becam a defense. Go figure…
Great Hornytoads! Can we take from this that celebrity protests concerning Mr. Polanski's, ah, "situation" is too much even for the NYT? Not that it matters because I doubt that even lefty celebs bother to read what the Gray Lady has to say any more. Still it is significant that we have finally come upon some aspect of celebrity culture that is too much even for the Times to swallow.
A old woman with no teeth beats out a 13 year old girl by a mile.
I think he needs about 5-10 with the GP in a Calif State pen to atone.
MoDo excluded, the editorial department of the Times still does consider themselves more sophisticated and old-style intellectual than the Hollywood riff-raff, but humors them because they're supposedly good with media PR to sway the hearts and minds of the proletariat.
It's the old-style liberal sensibility that kept them from going along with Hollywood on Polanski, though I suspect if you checked the e-mails of some of the more "forward-looking" and pop culture-conscious among the newsroom staff, they're probably miffed that there are still some old fuddy-duddys writing Pinch's editorials.
Hollywood is becoming more and more like the French aristocrats of the 18th century – Evremonde, anyone?
What the hell is going on with the Polocks these days? The nation that gave us Tadeusz Kościuszko, Kazimierz Pułaski, Pope John Paul II and Lech Welensa is schilling for a child predator?
How does one define rape then? Is rape "Rape Lite" with only half of the emotional baggage? Whoopi has grabbed the title for most idiotic comment lately, and she has some nerve trying to explain it all away.
I say we start an online petition to tell Hollywood elitists to STFU (I'm looking at YOU Weinstein) and let this pedophile pay for his crimes.
Brilliant — thanks.
Nice, that poor lib that has to monitor FoxNews, read BH, NewsBusters, Townhall & Drudge. I have a lot of empathy for him/her. I think they will have to replace that person every few months. Either the person will have aneurysm or actually convert to conservativism if they understand what they are reading.
Do it, man. I'm in.
Done:

Pass it around
I guess if you look at the fact that most people in European countries seem happy to see their children indoctinated and instructed earlier and earlier in matters of sexual behavior it's obvious that childhood innocence is no longer respected there. The goal is normalizing sexual behavior in young children for the purpose of normalizing pedophilia.
It is, not surprisingly, the very same path the US Department of Education and the teachers' unions are telling us our children need to walk.
Knowing what we know about the "my-self-gratification/esteem-is-all" of much of the progressive agenda, none of this should be a surprise.
Some of them get it:
The French director Luc Besson refused to sign the petition calling for Polanski's release.
He said: "I have a lot of affection for him, he is a man that I like very much but nobody should be above the law. I don't know the details of this case, but I think that when you don't show up for trial, you are taking a risk."

Does Hollywood think Manson should be set free? If Sharon Tate thinks Polanski should walk, shouldn't Charlie? These people in Hollywood are nuts!!
I think it is because they hired an editor to start watching FOX News and the Conservative blogs. Ture!
I wood like to see Roman do cummunity service at the Los Angeles County Prision system working with sex crime inmates. one on one, or maybe in groupe settings.
I used to be a liberal, keep this under your hat, its a secret, so 'shhhhhhhhhhh.' Modern liberals don't give a rat's ass about other people.
The party of "compassion" is remorseless.
Be careful, that monkey flying out of your ass could be Polanski making a break for it.
Tomorrow they'll be writing a retraction saying "We apoligize for offending our readers for allowing such an obviously wrongheaded article to appear in our paper. After receiving thousands of letters ranging from canceling subscriptions, to Pinch not being invited to Woodys next cocktail party we realized we were being un-fair to Mr. Polanski.
We are happy to announce that Mr. Sulzberg will be incurring any and all costs related to defending Mr. Polanksi against this McCarthy like witch hunt.
I called him/her at NYT and asked why they were so late in reporting the story.
They told me watching FOX is so foreign and shocking to them that they are beginning
with reruns. It may be a while until they get their timing down.
What's the world coming too when I agree wiuth the NYT and Geraldine Ferraro…
ewww.. I don't even want to know what he is covering Polanski's back with…
woody Allen excusing Polanski? Of course, or he would have to convict himself as a fellow Pedophile- can't have that, or else their hypocritical world would fall apart.
Polanski raped AND sodomized a thirteen year old after drugging her and giving her champagne- what more needs to be said? What part of that previous sentence excuses bad behavior?
He pled guilty, but then I would guess he didn't want to take the chance that someone might sodomize him in prison- now that would be justice.
me caveman, and me know even blind monkey can sometimes find banana!
and there goes my coffee!
and over at that table, we have Whoopie-Two-Times… we call her that cause she says everything two times…
I agree.. Polanski will be in dire need of a butt buddy.
This must have from the new person hired to watch FOX News.
This must have from the new person hired to watch FOX News. Pandering ain't gonna save ya, the damage is done.
Wow- they really ARE starting to read the conservative blogs! About time!
New York Times is just a facist art-hating right wing scribe. (I am joking).
Polanski should be shot with an arrow by Burt Reynolds
I'm assuming you mean Sharon's sister Debra (unbelievable on her part)…
Excellent job! Hard to believe this is a reply to a comment on a blog. You could write an essay or a thesis based on your comment.
Thank you for giving me much to ponder.
I can't help but agree. Why else would you hedge on something like this?
Understand this abomination occurred at Jack Nicholson's house. Wonder where he was? Did he watch? Did he approve of this? Maybe it was just too, too much fun.

He was out of town. Anjelica Huston was there, though. That was back when they were living together. As far as I'm aware, she said she didn't see anything.
LOL!
Sounds like a lot of puckered arses commenting resentfully from their dark basements.
US military troops in the Middle East rape and murder foreigner girls unabated on a daily basis, and these universal wits here prefer to launch international chases for – how is it again…a dangerous 76 year old "arteest?"
Find another boat, another Plymouth Rock and take your creepy intentions to another shore.
" NYT sees normal point of view and runs with it" Of course there's a time lag. Rosetta Stone hasn't got the necessary translation dics yet..
Clue to NYT: admitted pedophiles go to jail, register as sex offenders and hope nobody hurts them. Badly.
Hey Del, tell ya what. Get an M16, and maybe a helmet and boots, then buy a one-way ticket to Kandahar.
Ask for directions, then go up on the front lines and see if anybody rescues your sorry ass after those nice Talibans shoot your sorry ass..
"US military troops in the Middle East rape and murder foreigner girls unabated on a daily basis…"
You forgot to mention that US troops also eat babies and use puppies for target practice.
When you are making sh!t up, why hold yourself back?

Why yes, going after actual criminals instead of the mendacious fantasy you just made up. No, pointing out the few instances where a US serviceman actually committed a crime resembling what you claim doesn't count. You said "daily" not "once in awhile" and that is why you are a liar.
"Who cares for a no-name, 13 year old girl? She's not one of the cultural elite, so why the fuss, right?"
If you'd bother to do a few seconds of research you'd know that she has a name (Samantha Geimer), and has been very much in the spotlight over this. She forgave Polanski years ago. Those of you who prattle on about "the victim" should really read what this victim has said about this situation:
"I have survived, indeed prevailed, against whatever harm Mr. Polanski may have caused me as a child. I got over it a long time ago."
"True as they may be, the continued publication of those details causes harm to me, my beloved husband, my three children and my mother."
"What happened that night, it's hard to believe, but it paled in comparison to what happened to me in the next year of my life."
"He did something really gross to me, but it was the media that ruined my life."
She has also said that she's glad Polanski fled because only then did the media leave her alone. So for those of you so concerned about the victim, you should be treating the mediai with the vitriol that you do Polanski. This continued pursuit of Mr. Polanski has nothing to do with justice for a victim who admits being "over it." It has everything to do with a government scorned.
What he did was absolutely repugnant, and had it been my daughter, I would likely have shot the son of a bitch. If the victim was calling for his hide, I would say it is incumbent upon the state to deliver. But without a victim's desire for penalty, the quest for punishment is reduced from justice to vengeance (not that his original "sentence" was more than a joke to begin with).
Online petitions? Is there anything more useless?
