I remember watching that special and just being sort of annoyed and angry with the performances…until this one.
Tom Petty. Will love you forever. You stood up! you did NOT back down. It was the best thing I'd ever seen.
MTV still sucks.
I've expressed my love for The Who before on this site…this may be one of the reasons:

Puts the lyrics in a different light considering the context….
Plus Townshend proves he still rocks.

I remember watching this. I think every channel was blocked out with it and I remember having one of those "am I really here" moments. I was only 18 and everything felt so surreal and like life had permanently changed. I was crying for most of it until Tom Petty. Never had the words of this song meant so much and provoked such a powerful feeling in my heart…anger, determination, resilience. Americans, don't back down. We will see a day like this again and we need to take what we learned on 9/11 and use it. Take none of it for granted. Make those 3,000 lives lost count for something.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have always been my favorite band (I'm 24), seeing this again reconfirms my feeling, and I WON"T BACK DOWN, and I'll never forget. God Bless America.
Here are some fascinating anecdotes you can find about "I Won't Back Down" on Jeff Lynne's song database (He was the lead singer for ELO and the co-writer of this song.) http://www.jefflynnesongs.com/jlworks8.php
"While we were mixing Free Fallin' we wrote I Won't Back Down. Jeff and I did, in a little booth in the studio. So now George is back in town, and he helped us record I Won't Back Down. And we're having a ball. [...] We wrote [I Won't Back Down] as we were mixing Free Fallin'. We wrote that in the next room. In a little glass booth, where I could actually see into the control room, I could see them working on the mix. So we went in next door, where the piano was, and came up with that. We came out really excited. It was hard to keep our mind on the mix because we already wanted to cut this other song. George [Harrison] was around a lot during that time. Just socially, just hanging out. His family would come over, and we became close, the two families. So George would sometimes come to the session to hang out. That was a particular time that he was there, and he wound up singing with us. I played the piano. Jeff had the melody for the verse, and then I came up with main riff. We got together, and with all this synergy, we pretty much finished the song– all but one line. Which was 'There ain't no easy way out.' I didn't have a line for that. And I was singing, 'I'm standing on the edge of the world.' [Laughs] And when we were recording it, George said, 'What the hell is that– 'I'm standing on the edge of the world' Surely there's got to be something better than that.' [Laughs] And then I came up with 'There ain't no easy way out,' which seemed so obvious. But that was George going, 'That line's dumb.' And I'm really glad that I got all the dumb lines out, because it's a song that apparently a lot of people have been inspired by. I get a lot of people telling me, either through the mail or in person, how that song has played a role in helping them in some way in their life. How it's given them conviction to get over a certain obstacle in their life. It's really gratifying. I even saw an article in a paper about a girl coming out of a coma listening to that song. It had been her favorite song…" "I've heard a lot of different versions of it. I heard a church choir sing it. My brother's told me he's heard marching bands do it at football games. And I just heard a gospel record of it, where the guy was doing it as a shuffle. So when I first wrote that song, I thought, 'This might not be right, because it's so blunt, very blunt.' But I think that bluntness may have been what inspired people. One of my more well-known songs. I just have to do it in shows or people feel let down. So I'm really happy to have written that one."

Wow. Thank you for sharing that. I'm not even going to comment on that "lady's" letter… my blood is BOILING!!!
Sheriff Boyer's response was a class act!
May God bless SFC Woods and bring comfort and love to his family… and may God continue to bless and protect our brave troops, firefighters, police officers, EMT's, et al… Godspeed.
America's most apolitical rock star, and since the death of Johnny Cash, the one with the most integrity. Was writing timeless American music even at the height of disco. Even did a voice on Mike Judge's King of the Hill. Notice the word American is never used ironically or as anything but a positive in his music or conversation. Who has written more great songs than this guy?
I'm a major Who fan as well, and they most definitely ROCKED at the 9/11 benefit!!!
OK not a COMPLETE WHO fan. But wouldn't this be a great anthem for Beck fans? I think Pete Townsend wrote this about Richard Nixon though. Nixon taking over for LBJ – getting us out of the war promises.
Eh, I cold be wrong. Could be some British thing.
Love the windmill.
That was their one good album. (IMO).
Apparently, Democrats are not fans of Tom Petty.
Forget Springsteen (sorry, Evan), Mellenschmuck and the rest of the socialist wannabe Woody Guthries. Actually, screw the socialist Woody Guthrie. As mentioned above, Johnny Cash was Americana and Tom Petty is his most worthy heir. Four decades and still runnin' strong!
I'm a huge Who fan. Thanks for sharing.
Tom Petty says more with a few blunt words as he put it than others can say in two volumes. Always have been a fan of his music. Simple and honest and still rocks.
I think Pete Townsend wrote this about Richard Nixon though. Nixon taking over for LBJ – getting us out of the war promises.
And his realization that when the liberals took power back, that wasn't going to change anything for the better either.

The best without a doubt is this following story of a fallen Special Operation Force soldiers and his procession in STL.
"INCONVENIENCED" DOESN'T BEGIN TO DESCRIBE IT

Sergeant First Class William "Brian" Woods was a Team Medical Sergeant of Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne). On August 14th, Brian was shot and killed by small arms fire in Ghazni, Afghanistan. At 32 years old, Brian had done multiple tours of duty in the War on Terror. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and served four years before joining the Army and becoming a Special Forces Soldier…………………………………..
Read the whole story and it will bring all different emotions out. Mostly knowing we live in a Great Country!

Why do you say that?

Awesome! I have always been a Petty fan. He is a fellow Southerner, and I have always enjoyed this song the most of all of his work. Now it has special meaning.
Ha!I'm from Florida,so you know how I feel about Mr.Petty(last living southern rockers). The Wilburys were THE epitome of rock and roll, going back to the "happy accident" recorded in 1948 that began this genre. He is a true patriot and has never quibbled about that while being told by the "pop" media that we southerners are too dumb to know anything culturally or contribute or be anything of significance.Rock on,brother.
I agree w/ the first post. Everyone was singing these sad, dreary songs. I was angry, and I think most people were too, and really felt this was a cop out. Then Petty came on and actually showed a little backbone, a little fight, and I really appreciated it.

I love this song with all my heart.
Really?
Here's a hint: read the title of the song, then listen to the lyrics. Then, ask yourself if that sounds like anyone in the Democratic Party over the last eight years.
