Ah, Glenn Ford. I just rewatched Gilda last weekend. He had a really everyman quality while still bringing the "dapper." Not Brando chops, mind you, but a solid actor.

Obama to seal US-UN relationship; First American president to chair Security Council…… ~ Drudge report
GREAT!!! Just what we need! Another Marxist Socialist chairing the UN Security Council, not to mention deeper
involvement with a totally worthless, self-serving organization like the UN.
The US needs to get out of the UN, period.
Haiti would make a good place to relocate the UN……….
The plus side is Michelle and the kids will get to make more trips to NYC.
Paglia has an excellent article regarding Obama's healthcare troubles and the dems best hope for 2012 is the repubs putting up another lame candidate as they did in 2008.
Worth the read…….

Just saw him in DESTROYER with Edward G, Robinson. He was good in an early entry – 1943 – for him.
OTOH – Director Frank Capra worked with him in POCKETFUL OF MIRACLES and found him to be a loathsome nightmare to have to work with. In his autobiography (highly readable), "THE NAME ABOVE THE TITLE", he doesn't have too many bad words for too many people….except for Glenn Ford.
Well, it’s Barry’s big night, I wonder what the teleprompter will say. I bet all the liberals are getting ready for the blessed event, it’s so exciting when he speaks. I can’t wait, …yak!
I can feel the thrill welling up in my foot, preparing for it's leap up my leg and into parts unknown.
Fox is reporting on the presence of Great White sharks off the coast of Cape Cod. Researchers aren't sure why they are hanging around. Might I suggest that there is a well known recent opening for the title of Cape Cod's Most Famous Predator and the sharks are simply filling a vacuum?
Who is Obama going to try to marginalize in tonight's speech and how he's going to do it!
Me first:
Who: Conservative Bloggers
How : Internet Dis-information
It's a game!
Paying their last respects to one of their own kind?
Game on!
Nothing gets enacted until 2013. The Dems hope this will keep people from actual SUFFERING from the effects of this POS legislation until AFTER the 2012 elections. I say if they actually DO pass the POS despite the obvious will of the American people AGAINST it, we elect legislators that swear to repeal it all. Every last bit.
I figured it was the blood in the water from Van Jones.
I bet Glenn Beck will get a mention.
Doctors are good for a quick swipe.
As has been pointed out elsewhere, any 'health-whatever–care, insurance, whatever the wannabe dictators Pelosi, Reid, Obama wish to coat it as', it must include right off the top:
1– TORT REFORM! No compromise!
2–Whatever plan is proposed, it is COMPULSORY for Congress and the Executive branch as well. No compromise!
If neither of those two are included, it is no-go, and the pols that vote for it are voted out of office in 2010! NO COMPROMISE!!!
Oh yeah, but Glenn will probably be alluded to as something like: "the People who want to see America fail!" or something of that nature. Obama isn't going to share HIS platform with anyone by name I don't think.
Who: Stay at home Moms looking out for their children's future
How: Special interest Groups putting fear into the elderly…
Beat me to it….
How much you wanna bet he calls for a moment of silence for Van Jones
yay!
Am I crazy, or was there no open thread yesterday? Intentional, or post-holiday brain fart? Who cares about the speech, "Glee" is back! Also, thanks to all who wrote about "Office Space" last week on the "Extract" thread. Saw it on IFC, watched it. Loved it. There need to be more tight, 90-minute movies!
Stop the Cass Sunstein Confirmation! I don't know how many of you are aware of the guy but….OMG. Read and then take action here http://tiny.cc/6IvOQ Today! His confirmation is pending for vote today or tomorrow.
Scott, check out Ransom (1956). That's a great flick. The film also starred Donna Reed and it's Leslie Nielson's first film.

Kurosawa kind of redid it as "High and Low", which I also recommend, though no one seems to consider it a remake. If it's not, it's certainly very similar. In any event, I highly recommend both.

Stan, I hear it's going to be a "rally the base" speech, which makes sense because I doubt too many non-true believers are going to tune in. Plus, he needs to recharge his base if he's going to get them to start flooding congress with letters and phone calls. Appealing to the middle won't help with that.
You're not crazy – there was no open thread yesterday.
Had you never seen Office Space before?
Re: Glee – I didn't watch it but Jane Lynch was in a series that briefly aired on Starz (I streamed it on Netflix) last summer called Party Down. Funny stuff but not for everyone.
Just like Glee, I'm sure, but she steals the scene every time she walks on! No…never saw "Office Space." I must have been…busy in 1999.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/09/09/acorn-...
I love how ACORN throws their own people under the bus just for doing what they were told. Talk about criminal…
Who: right wing conservatives who spread false information
How: FOX News and town hall meetings
Of course, we will all be sitting there laughing at him; assuming we are watching the blame session.
We all know that the liberals hate the rich and evil insurance companies. Public option is one way of getting rid of them one way or another, either by shutting them out completely or strangling them with regulations. So, if Nobama says we can keep our own insurance provided the insurance companies do what they are told, (which in effect will regulate them out of business by setting unreasonable benchmarks) does that mean we will have to bail out the insurance companies that he runs out of business?
See that picture makes me want to smoke, use Brylcreem, ride a horse, be Superman’s stepfather, be the lead in a film with Brando, wish Hollywood still made movies, which made money.
Glenn Ford in “Pocket Full of Miracles” and “The Gazebo” was funny and heartwarming. And Rage! A movie about a guy bit by a rabid dog—that’s it, that’s all. Desperation, fear, and looking death—an insane, brain-infected death, right in the face.
Apparently he said, “I’ve never played anyone but myself on screen,” which is amazing considering the fact the most people go through their entire lives never knowing who they are.
Technically, he was Supes' adoptive dad…unless he married Susanna York in some deleted scene I never saw!
He was also a wonderfully nasty villain in the original "3:10 To Yuma."
Kennedy Center honorees announced–I gotta say, I always love watching them. It's like the nicest roast ever, and the level of talent that performs in their honor is always pretty mind-blowing. This December: Bruce Springsteen, Robert DeNiro, Mel Brooks, Dave Brubeck & Grace Bumbry.
[...he was Supes' adoptive dad...unless he married Susanna York ...]
Wishful thinking?
The Big Heat is another terrific Glenn Ford movie.
I loved "Glee," and I'm looking forward to it finally starting up again. You really don't need much more than a twisted sense of humor and some great musical numbers to tell a really solid story.
My vote would be those dastardly insurance companies. They're an easy target.
I can only dream of what he's going to call us next. Gee, I really love it when a person who works for me INSULTS ME.
Can't watch it. I'll have to catch the highlights later from some other venue. He makes me nauseous.
Actually, I wouldn't take that bet. I think the Obama admin will not mention it, and if Gibbsy says anything about it he'll be tied to the picnic table and beaten. Obama DOES NOT want to be reminded of, much less admit, his mistakes. Van Jones is the visible and outward sign of Obama's arrogance and the fall coming from his hubris.
Then again, Obama has never passed up an opportunity to spin his errors as "misconceptions" or "manufactured anger" or "weewee" on the part of anyone not supporting him.
Thanks for the Glenn Ford picture. As a young girl…I had a huge crush on him.
He was a versatile and believable actor, handling comedy or drama with ease.
Mr. Ford was a credit to our country, the Marines and Navy.
I know I'll see a good movie if his name is in the credits!
That's what I'm saying, I don't think he can help himself. I think he's got a real problem with accepting blame for bad judgement. He'll spout off some nonsense that Van Jones was this great guy and Glenn Beck smeared him.
It's comical watching it happen….
Obama's speech to the youth:
Obama referred to himself 63 times:
I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I (39)
I’m I’m I’m I’m I’m I’m I’m I’m (8)
my my my my my my (6)
I’ve I’ve I’ve I’ve I’ve (5)
me me me (3)

What: Effective Internet Investigative Journalism
How: A Distraction.
I was thinking the Canary islands… lot less people to move when we sink the island, forgetting that the UN building was there…
Who: Me
Why: Because I'm an evil knuckledragger who hates GEICO.
From the "How Many Czars" department:
"However, the actual number of czars in the administration is a disputed matter. McHenry requests that all of President Obama's 44 czars testify before Congress. But other reports put the number at around 30."
So it seems the amount of Czars may be infinite or so massive that no one knows how many of Obamer's old buddies aka 'czars' are doing his robotic bidding?
He was great in "Blackboard Jungle," which is one of my favorite movies, with a great cast. Check out one of the characters named Jameel Farah (sp?), otherwise known as Jamie Farr, who played Santini I think.
RIP Army Archerd
Like many young people, my first (and so far, pretty much only) Glenn Ford experience would be his role as Jonathan Kent in the 1978 Superman movie (still one of the greatest comic book movies ever made). Richard Donner and Tom Mankiewicz have nothing but praise for him in the DVD audio commentary.
I suppose his casting (along with Brando and Hackman), like the casting of Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, etc. for the Nolan Batman movies helps bring a sense of legitimacy and realism to otherwise fantastic proceedings. Ford's presence in Superman certainly grounds the movie in the real world.
Glenn Ford… one of the classiest of the classy. The perfect blend of smooth and rough, honorable and tough, intelligent and down-to-earth.
Agree, is excellent. Paglia writes thoughtfully and, I think, with fairness: rare qualities in the "opposition."
Only if he, Reid, Pelosi, Durbin, Schumer or any of the rest of this bunch of dems own stock in them .
Guys. Can someone send me the lowdown on what the hell happened to Libertas? I mean, in its nascent days it was like the rebel outpost on Hoth, fomenting scandalous dissent against the Sarandon/Robbins hegemony. So what the hell happened to Princess Murty and Chewpuzzo? Anyone? Feel free to email me at shergar01@gmail.com Cheers!
I read that last night. Unfortunately, just read also that Obama and Congress are going full-steam ahead with this health care plan, just like the protests of August never happened. So much for listening to the American people. He's going to push this on us to try to fake some semblance of a backbone, and the people are the ones who are going to suffer for it.
Thanks for counting! I'm forwarding your efforts to all on my list. Wonder if he'll exceed 63 times tonight, hmmmmmm?! Not only is he a Marxist, he is increasingly annoying. If I didn't have to be informed about the rubbish he'll spew….I wouldn't watch this self indulgent effort.
Hillary Clinton is going to resign as Secretary of State to run for… Governor of New York!(?)
"The boss hears from two sources," Goldfarb says, "that Hillary Clinton is considering stepping down as Secretary of State this fall in order to run for Governor of New York."

A must read
Obama's Mad Dash Continues
Obama's problem is more fundamental than his health-care mess. He campaigned on a no more red state/blue state, white/black, rich/poor polarity, and offered a sort of transcendence that was used to make up for his prior dubious relationships with the likes of Reverend Wright and Bill Ayers.

I'll work my butt off for the next good man or woman who comes up against Obama. I've never been more outraged in my life.
a true American hero- and a Canadian to boot…
Glenn Ford has an amazingly colorful career outside his acting- he was Marine OSS officer doing serious undercover work in the ETO in WWII. USMC personnel in Europe were particularly elite. He then served in the US Navy for 35 more years as a Commander in Korea and Vietnam.
Once while filming in France he got drunk with some Legionaires and joined the French Foreign Legion the next day. The producer, horrified his film wouldn't be completed begged the French government to let him out of his committment.
They did. He is the only Legion recruit ever to receive this dispensation. Ford went on to have a marvelous career and is generally regarded as one of the greats.
Deservedly so…
"YOU LIE!"
"3:10 To Yuma" one of Glenn Ford's best movies!! Much better than the Russell Crowe version.
