Name this movie: An ace CIA operative, condemned as a rogue and now hunted by the Company, bashes and crashes his way through colorful foreign settings, pursued by heavily armed hit men, while back at Langley headquarters an inscrutable deputy director and one of his top lieutenants are arousing the...

I think parents should plan to keep their kids home sick on Sept 8, so they don't have to receive their Obama communion.
There is a banner on Drudge this AM. The public option is not going to happen?Heads up people, look for the bait-n-switch folks, if statist are anything they are persistent, it will reappear. Be vigilant, keep your representatives minds clear let'em know know they "serve" at our pleasure.
Ted Kennedy's party-boy-in-crime, Chris Dodd is chairing the Kennedykare push.
Disgusting!
Obama and his dems have shown their socialist intentions for us. They are ABSOLUTELY NOT TO BE TRUSTED for anything.
The only safe healthcare bill is NO HEALTHCARE BILL!!!!
DEEP-SIX THIS ENTIRE ABOMINATION OF A BILL!!!!!!!
Ah, The Duke. I love it when AMC or TCM has an all-Wayne all day marathon. I think that's a big part of why I'm so addicted to classic movies. The actors and the stories all geared us towards an innocence and appreciation of life that you don't see as much in modern cinema.
This is the future of all healthcare should this bill pass.

That's something our elected officials seem to have forgotten. People in Wasington need to understand that they don't rule the country.
That's something our elected officials seem to have forgotten. People in Washington need to understand that they don't rule the country.
I read about the presentation to our children last night. I envisioned a bunch of green clad children with red stars on there caps waving flags emblazened with the Obama "O" cheering our great leader as they were instructed to convince there parents to following the "One" and report those who do not. A very bizzare and chilling episode in US history. Leave my kids ALONE!!!
They're doing the waitress sandwich again except that Dodd is now on top and it is America that he's pressing into Kennedy's corpse.
I agree. They make me want to hurl. Too bad they actually had to bury Ted, or they could prop him up "Weekend at Bernie's" style, with a sign on his arm and cart him from place to place.
John Wayne. I loved True Grit. A gun in each hand, and the reins in your teeth. Heaven.
These elitist turds would beg to differ.
There is a small but growing movement to keep children home on Sept 8th. I am going to offer to keep Grand kids, Nieces and Nephews at home for a small party.
Here you go, Patriot. The quality is not so good, but the meaning is clear.

What I am afraid of in this bill is that it allows someone to declare an emergency which then allows the police to arrest without a warrant any person who the "Government" deems as needed to be quarantined or vaccinated. Very little is needed to shut people down.
All it would take is an unscrupulous person who decides that his opponent in the upcoming election needs quarantine, for some unspecified disease. It also exempts the police if they should make a mistake.
Don't be too surprised if it makes its way to the US Congress.
I never watched cartoons growing up, I watched The Duke. There aren't many men around like him anymore.
Fortunately, my kids go to a parochial school, so they may be spared.
Correction, there aren't ANY men like him around anymore.
LONG LIVE THE DUKE!!!!

Van Jones is an amoral, racist, communist radical. We all need to watch out for this guy as he tries to push his enviro-whacko agenda….
I read that with little surprise. A year ago I would have been mildly surprised, not now.
I agree.
This administration is filled with these types of people, very troubling…..
Our 'Dear Leader' speaks to the children? If ever there was an argument for home schooling!!!
John Wayne: Great actor. Great patriot. Larger than life.
I'm pretty sure the photo of John Wayne is from Rio Bravo. Excellent movie with a great supporting cast of character actors – Dude, Stumpie, the Kid, Feathers, Carlos, etc. Rio Bravo is one of my favorite because of the way Wayne takes a cast of characters, mustly down on their luck, and makes them into a force for good in a small town threatened by would be dictators and thugs.
I am more than troubled. I am also contemptuous.
I'm with you on that. My favorite John Wayne movie, with it's clone El Dorado a close second.
John Wayne again.
I am still a fan.
I don't have much new to say.
I dont like a lot of his 60s movies for they seem like parodies and/or 'cartoon westerns.
"Island in the Sky" doesn't get talked about much. Good film. (a grown up Alfalfa has a good tag line – "Whatever's customary" which he uses so as not to engage his brain.) "Island in the Sky" is a good Ernest K. Gann flight story like "The High and the Mighty" which Wayne kind of saves from it's excesses.
Terrific EKG film with a lalapalooza of an opening – Fate Is the Hunter. Oh, my!
Hey, Thanks. I love that scene, but always hate it when the horse "gets it".
Could be an excellent opportunity to spend the day teaching them about real American history!
Sounds like a great opportunity to spend the day teaching them about real American history!
Ditto!
John Wayne – all time favorite actor
The Searchers – all time favorite movie
nuf said!
They haven't been doing this for past several years?
check out the Mass. bill about swine flue pandemic, and how if passed, will send people into homes without warrant, take action FOR you, etc. (see today's Drudge)…Mass. People's Republic now avowed police state….nice…glad I left years ago when I still could….
The gorgeous Maureen O'Hara before Congress on why John Wayne should receive a Congressional Gold Medal:
http://www.users.qwest.net/%7Eaknot/congress.htm
Love the last line: And I feel the medal should say just one thing: John Wayne, American
There aren't any in Hollywood.
This is a Trojan Horse…incrementalism…no bill, no way, not this year…
If the DemocratSS go the reconsiliation route, make 'em pay America, make em pay…
Dodd is a disgusting over-age frat boy…I hope the voters of Conneticut wake up and boot him…he trails in the polls currently…2010 is a long way off…
It's way past time the people of this country END these political dynasties..no single family should be able to keep family members in place in Washington for DECADES…
Also Dean Martin? ya?…I might be confused…(not the first time!)
Then this should REALLY get your blood pressure going:

My Dad took me to see "True Grit" during it's first run in what? 1970? '71? I still remember going, just he and I and what a great movie that was…I'm blessed to still have my parents, tip-toeing into their 80's and my Dad is still a huge movie fan, he passed that trait along…and I'm so glad…
I had this idiot friend when I was a teenager and if a movie came on T.V. and it was in black and white he would immediately change the channel…that's a truly stupid person….
Yes, Dean Martin was in it too. His character's name was Dude.
Weekend at Teddy's… I smell a sitcom!
I have "Island in the Sky" and "The High and Mighty" on my netflix list.
Thanks, I thought so…
Great link, I wonder what the Duke would think of our country now.
. . . and then transfer them to private schools.
John Wayne was a real man..not like the punk actors we see in in hollyweird today.
John Wayne is still listed as one of the favorite actors decades after his death. The Shootist is one of my favorite movies.
Is there anybody out there that comes close to the Duke? Eastwood?Marvin? anyone in Hollywood. Is it now just a bunch of pretty boys?
They also have the IRS in KennedyKare bill. They want access to our bank accounts.
Frank Sinatra and John Wayne : what do they have in common?
Their fans rarely seem to think either man ever made a bad recording or a bad film.
Even some rock-ribbed Elvis fans will admit that many of his films are poorly done and contain dreadful 'songs'.
Where is the objective criticism for Sinatra and Wayne.?
"what an incredible smell you discovered!" ~ Han Solo
I wonder what John Wayne would say about the health care bill.
That would be step one. Step two would be to roll back decades of oppressive government regulation that have been adding billions in costs and strangling the entire system.
Every problem with health care and insurance that I can see is a direct result of government intervention.
The Shootist is a great movie. I appreciated the way John Wayne seemed to gravitate to more realistic westerns in the latter part of his career. True Grit, The Shootists and both fine examples.
I'm trying to remember my favorite John Wayne western scene. He's with a young James Caan, chasing bad guys through a bar. They get to the back room where a local says they went out the back door. Then James Caan says wait a minute, this is the guy that directed us into the last ambush. So Wayne orders the local out the back door first. The local refuses, so Wayne shoots him. He still won't go, so Wayne shoots him again.
I love that scene.
"Where is the objective criticism for Sinatra and Wayne.? "
Ok, Ok…Although both immensely entertaining, The Searchers was a better Wayne film than his Alamo. How's that?
And I'd rather hear Sinatra sing "I Get a Kick Out of You" than hear him sing "I've Got You Under My Skin.
And I'd rather hear Sinatra sing "I Get a Kick Out of You" than hear him sing "I've Got You Under My Skin."
I loved John Wayne in everything…True Grit is wonderful, but the girl who played Maddie bugged the living daylights out of me…not sure if that was on purpose or just the fact that her hair looked like it belonged on a Mod Squad fan poster.
I like "I've Got You Under My Skin" better than "I Get a Kick Out of You!"

I think he would shed a manly tear…and then tell us to get off our butts and get to work to save it!!
I've always liked North to Alaska. Yeah, I was a little lighthearted, but I think that's why I liked it so much. It's good clean (or muddy?) fun.
I'd rather give my account number to a Nigerian lottery scam.
A bad John Wayn movie is better than what Hollywood thinks are great movies now. And yes that includes "The Conqueror". Come to think of it I don't remember any bad John Wayne movies.
Most of Wayne's B-films were a little on the cheesey side. Sons of Katie Elder was not that great for me.
Not a word, just sneer and shake his head in disgust.
If you switch Colorado with Mississippi, and Dean Martin for Robert Mitchum, you basically have El Dorado. I've always been a big fan of "The Quiet Man" and "The Cowboys" myself.
Hmmm, comparing a couple of well-loved John Wayne films — The Searchers and Rio Bravo — to the typical action/drama film Hollywood makes now, I notice these differences:
1. The protagonist is utterly assured of his masculinity, and still has a good sense of humor.
2. Plenty of other characters are given good material, so we enjoy them and feel we know them.
3. We get a break from the tension now & then with some scenes of serenity or humor.
Come to think of it, these traits are also in the first Rocky film, but not so much in all the sequels…
Anyone care to name other 'recent' films (let's say since 1975) which have these traits?
Ohhh, The Quiet Man. My all-time favorite movie. Period.
TMC ran a day full of John Wayne movies about 2 weeks ago. I watched the "Green Berets" for the first time that night. I loved it, classic Wayne. He made a "pro-troops" movie and didn't care that the critics panned it. He didn't make it for the critics and Hollywood he made it for the guys over in Vietnam.
“I have found a certain type calls himself a Liberal. Now I always thought I was a Liberal. I came up terribly surprised one time when I found out that I was a right-wing conservative extremist, when I listened to everybody’s point of view that I ever met, and then decided how I should feel. But this so-called new Liberal group, Jesus, they never listen to your point of view…”

"It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried." Sir Winston Churchill
I completely agree. I'll take America warts and all over any other place on earth.
Memphis Belle, maybe.
Although there's no one protagonist, the entire crew is fleshed out and the audience gets to know them all. There are plenty of ribald jokes, and humorous scenes, for example, the cockpit gets riddled with bullet holes–red everywhere–pilot and co-pilot are arguing/panicking: "I'm not hit, it must be you!" "It's not me!"–Turns out it was the pilots lunch-his thermos full of tomato soup took a direct hit.
There's serenity too, when they're waiting before take off. Most guys are taking naps, but others are writing, or palying catch, or chatting up the local farmers.
I watched Memphis Belle a couple of weeks ago and remember thinking: "They wouldn't make this movie this way today."
Ok – then name a good/great/fine/exceptional film of today that isworse than your admittedly bad THE CONQUERER, please.
"I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them."

Now there was a man…John Wayne…sighhhhhhhh…..
Anyone hear any rumors on the Mitch Rapp movie being contemplated. Its supposed to be Consent to Kill but when I went onto IMDB pro its Protect and Defend which is an awesome book. And on the same subject Will Smiths name has been bandied about as being considered for the role as Rapp. Before anyone who has not read the books asks why I have a problem with that let me explain. Mitch Rapp is of German and Irish descent. I am livid that anyone would even consider Smith for this role as he is totally unsuited for it. What is this, dodging the rascist name calling by CAIR by casting an African American? Its funny, 300 was given all kinds of crap by Iran etc. calling it rascist and American Propaganda and yet it made nearly a Billion Dollars. So someone needs to bring up a logical reason why a celebrity like Smith is being even being talked about as Rapp. To me this is purely politically correct, affirmative action casting and I swear I will boycott this movie if they ruin it this way.
Leaving Las Vegas
I'd like to see the knucklehead to try and put his hands on John Freakin Wayne……
I read a Russian news article today that was talking about prodigies and apparently the man with the highest IQ [210] is a South Korean. At 4 years old he could read Korean, English, German and Japanese. At 5 years old he solved an extremely complicated math problem that mathematicians could not solve. From the age of 3-6 he was enrolled in a Korean university. At 7 years old he was offered a job at NASA. At age 15 he completed his PhD in physics.
Amazing.
If this Korean had gone to a public school in Los Angeles he’d be speaking one language- poorly, he’d be counting on his fingers and he’d be an economic illiterate. But he would have great self-esteem since that’s what matters to these public school sewers. To the LAUSD math, reading, writing, history and science are quaint.
"…watched Memphis Belle a couple of weeks ago and remember thinking: "They wouldn't make this movie this way today."
Agreed – As Mathew Modine was the pilot, they would be dropping schwins instead of bombs.
I think the right word to describe this story is delicious……….
UPDATE 1-Obama fund-raiser faces new U.S. fraud allegation
NEW YORK, Sept 2 (Reuters) – A fund-raiser for Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and other Democrats who was charged last week with defrauding Citigroup Inc (C.N) also defrauded other banks, U.S. prosecutors said.

Stay away from the 13th Warrior. Brutal scene of foot soldiers stopping charging cavalry. Historically the scene is pretty accurate, but not very pretty for horse lovers.
Other than that, it was a great movie, one of my favorites.

"Sheriff Chance! Sheriff Chance! Angie Dickinson say to get over to the hotel right now!"
The Duke made a few bad movies — his Mascot serials, and probably half the Loe Star westerns among them. But there is more character in something like "Tall in the Saddle" or "Dark Command" than in most action films today. I just watched "The Dark Knight," and at two hours, thirty five minutes, it is overblown and overlong. But how interesting is it that the most interesting character – The Joker – is the villain, and the hero is an empty cyborg?
I am afraid modern Hollywood pays far too much attention to moral ambiguity, and not enough to the defenders of our modern society.
They both have merit. H&M big cast, big plane, hack stories of the motley assortment of across the palette passengers. Wayne and a couple of scenes save it. Vet character actor George Chandler has a scene with Wayne way early in the film. Nicely done.
Island in the Sky – gutsier film.
"Leaving Las Vegas" is a good/great/fine/exceptional film of today?

Another fun story for an open thread……..
Joseph Stalin's grandson sues Russian newspaper over slurs against dictator
"The grandson of Joseph Stalin has begun a libel suit against one of Russia's leading liberal newspapers, accusing it of lying in an article that stated the wartime leader had killed Soviet citizens."
Uncle Joe killing Soviet citizens? That kind gentlemen would have never done such a thing, he was an environmentalist and community organizer.

Open thread post, how the heck does one go about changing the icon associated with their account over at intensedebate? I've followed what appears to be the obvious procedure. Click on update, browse for image, than hit save.
But it never changes for me. Does anyone know if there's a requirement on image size, and file format, or something technical that escapes me?
Star Wars
Indiana Jones
Red Dawn?
The most recent Star Trek movie
Toy Story????
LOOOOOOOOVE The 13th warrior!!!!
Ed, you're doing it right. Towards the bottom of the screen you should see all the images you've uploaded to be used as a gravitar, try clicking on one of them and see if that works. Maybe the image you're uploading is too big?
Well, you've got a point! Actually, somebody's been propping Ted up in one way or another for the past 50+ years.
Something smells, but it's not a sitcom. Using the dead as pimps. That reeks.
? Toy Story was an "action/drama" film?? You're joking, right?
Okay, I'll suggest a few titles myself:
Space Cowboys
The Right Stuff
The Big Red One
Breaker Morant
I almost said Raiders of the Lost Ark, but I don't think it really has the 2nd trait I listed.
Anyway, not many movies fit the bill eh?
Die Hard
Fifth Element
Any James Bond movie
Italian Job
The General's Daughter
