“Deliverance,” great movie. Moral of the story, “stay the hell out of anyplace that you do not know or understand.”
To quote a friend; "Deliverence is really a love story". This movie has given canoing, rednecks, and banjos a bad name. Now imagine a sequel, set in downtown anywhere USA, with hoodlums, rap music , complete with innocent travelers getting raped on their way through… oh wait, that's every day in anywhere USA.
Anyway, here is a link to Glen Beck's week recap.

I suppose now I am a racist and WalMart will boycott me
Deliverance…simply the best.
The Place where "Deliverance" took place is now Brasstown Golf Resort. I always enjoyed Eric Weissberg first hearing him with "The Tarriers." His song Dueling Banjos with Marshall Brickman is an American classic. Weissberg is an expert banjo and dobro artist:

But it was 1 banjo and 1 guitar.
Joe, you must have flunked marketing 101. "Dueling Banjo and Guitar" would have not been nearly as a catchy a song title.
I have a new cause:
SAVE RENO 911! It's the funniest show on TV!!
I live in the South and believe me, there are people like the Deliverance inbreds roaming around. However, you Yankees have your own version. They're called Kennedys.
I never wanted to go camping with my family again after seeing this film. (If I were a conspiracy theorist I'd think that "Deliverance" had been bankrolled by the Sierra Club.)
Wasn't that music a studio project that had half a dozen or so instruments playing? It wasn't just Ronnie Cox and a very young Larry Byrd out in the woods pickin' and grinnin'…
How true, SomeDame. The Kennedy line is funny as all get out. You did, however, leave out over half of Hollywood.
I was just thinking of John Boorman last night. He's the great mind behind Point Blank, Hell in the Pacific, Excaliber, The Emerald Forest, Hope and Glory, and yes Zardoz (well, I liked it).
When people ask what's the scariest movie I ever saw, it's Deliverance hands-down. Keep your zombies and vampires. Mountain Boys who ain't right in the head (or the pants) is the real Fright Night.
Now, if we could just put some Democrats on a white-water rafting trip up the river…
Burt at his finest.
That movie to me was scary as all get out when I first watched it, it still is. Mainly because it's pretty realistic in a lot areas.
Interesting reading for today.

Cindy Sheehan is protesting against Obama's Illegal and Immoral War in Afghanistan. Why aren't all the lefties behind her? Why aren't they demanding our troops be brought home and Obama be tried for war crimes? I guess Sheehan doesn't have Absolute Moral Authority anymore.
Bonnie and Clyde, The Gambler (The James Caan one, not the Kenny Rogers one), Taxi Driver.
Not Larry Byrd, but a very young Sean Penn…
I have to say, there IS a stretch of road in Southern Georgia that made me hum duelling banjos. But like you said, there are many inbred blue bloods floating around the northeast as well.
One of my favorite designs on Snorg Tees is "Paddle faster – I hear banjos."
Wow. And the governmental power grab continues. Oh, wait. Guess it's ok since it's not GWB doing it.

Caught this last night on another site. Just imagine if a person of non-color had said this!! Whew!! All Hell would break loose. The officer would be sent to "diversity training" and made to apologize for 300 years of mistreatment by the "man".
This particular officer needs to be sent to "US Constitution training" today if not sooner and/or be FIRED and the city who hired his a**, sued for damages!!!
Jack booted thug is what he is.
He made a fortune on those Trans Am movies.
And he did make something of comeback (like Travolta). Burt's Congressman Dave Dilbeck in "Striptease" was the highlight of an otherwise fairly lame film (and perhaps the most true-to-life portrayal of a member of Congress I've ever seen).
Also, he should have won Best Supporting Actor for "Boogie Nights."
I only hit "Submit Comment" once, honest.
I can see the resemblance. From "Deliverance" to "Fast Times"…quite a stretch for a young actor…
Don't leave out the British nobility.
I think if the degenerate rednecks had gotten a look at Barney Frank and Henry Waxman, it would have been a whole different movie.
A working title could be "Scared Straight".
Well, she doesn't understand that Afghanistan is a "war of necessity".
Hard to believe that nearly half of the electorate is still swallowing Obama's crap.
Any minute, a liberal should show up with the brilliant rejoinder, "well, what about Bush"?
"Boogie Nights" was a surprisingly good film, for me, anyway. Certainly not for everyone.

Nope, they used her like a two dollar pro. Once their god got elected, they dumped her by the side of the road. Remember the left will say or do anything to advance their agenda, to anyone. These are the means justify the ends guys.
no biggie, the internet must have burped.
Back in 1979, when Burt Reynolds starred in the (intelligent, mature) comedy Starting Over (James L Brooks screenplay), BR was a top box office champ, and he announced he would follow a career strategy of alternating between respectable films like Starting Over and sheer fun flicks like Smokey and the Bandit. Sounded like a great plan. Too bad most of his '80's films did rather poorly after that.
He did too many dumb car flicks, trashing the trust his fans had that he would be in enjoyable films. He rejected the chance to play the astronaut in Terms of Endearment, which rejuvenated Jack Nicholson's career, because JN openly embraced being middle aged; balding with a big gut; self-assured, unashamed…
Part Two:
It's so sad how Burt Reynolds tried too hard to seem too young for too long — you wanted to like him, but you had to cringe and turn away from the shameful spectacle. Finally (1989) BR played an aging guy in a decent little film called Breaking In (check out that director's other '80s films – charming – Bill Forsyth),
but it was 'too little too late' to redirect his badly off-track career, win back his old audience, etc…
And now? Last time I saw the latest version of Burt Reynold's face (too much plastic surgery!!),
it was a horror. What a sad inability to accept/love himself as he is/was (ala Mickey Rourke, Michael Jackson).
Why does the president need the power to shut down the internet?
Is the story about this pending legislation just more distraction?
And why do I sense that he almost has the ability, if not the legit power, to shut it down anyway?
It's been a while but I thought Barney Frank and Henry Waxman WERE the rednecks in this movie.
we prefer the best memories of Burt, and the man who saved Hollywood from itself…
Back in the last era of left wing lunacy, the early 70's, Hollyweird was intent on making leftis polemics no one wanted to see ('Soldier Blue', 'Reds') so Burt went back to his Southern roots and made an indie called 'White Lightning'. It was a good film, but more important it started the trend of films steeped in Americana being made
in the South- 'Gator', 'Macon County Line', and of course 'Smokey and the Bandit'.
These films made a fortune and put folks back into the theater. We could use a new Burt- but many thanks to the one and only…

The tall, rugged man playing the sheriff at the end of the film is James Dickey, the author of the novel of the same name. It's terrific. He was a primarily a poet, but, wow, the novel is good. Very well written. If I remember correctly the plot of the movie remained consistent with the novel.
Oh, there are hicks up here in Yankee-land, too. The non-hicks just do a better job of "disappearing" the rednecks than y'all do down south.
er, thanks for *fixing* that…
Because he KNOWS that the very thing that helped get him into office can also work against him.
I agree syvyn11. They used her and threw her away. The same thing they will do to anyone whose usefulness runs out. Better watch your back Rahm, Nancy, Harry, et al because you guys are next.
Nasty….. Love it!
Maybe it was the way he moved the junk in his trunk?
Touche!
Does anyone else get the feeling that there are a LOT of obama "plants" on sites such as this? I mean there are people on certain sites who practically cry when they hear/read anything negative posted about "the one". What's up with that?
You just don't understand the modern liberal definition of 'absolute moral authority.'
It's who ever is saying what they happen to agree with at any given moment.
Burt Reynolds could have put out a movie with him reading the alphabet dressed in a chicken suit and my sister would have died over it. For her, and I suspect many, acting had nothing to do with the attraction.
Simple, two reasons. First, the new alternative media depends upon the internet for survival. Cut that off and we're all back to what ever drivel Katie Couric spits out.
Secondly, Iran's last election. How did the protesters communicate? Twitter.
Afganistan is Obama's "Good War"…he seeks to try to continue to fool the country into thinking he's ~tough on terrorism~ya right…
Iraq is Bush's "Bad War"…a liberal opprotunity to cash-in on a soured electorate and parlay that into socialist nanny state, how convenient…
How liberals/Democrats/Main Stream Media still manage to unlink the major destabilizing despot in the entire Middle East, Saddam from the entire situation is amazingly disingenuous…
I liked a couple of Burt Reynolds movies. Aside from the trans am comedies – which I thought hysterical at the time, but can't stand now – White Lightning and Longest Yard were pretty decent in my opinion.
I think the Democrat party is trying to get ALL of us on a white-water rafting trip up the river, without any paddles!
Best Burt Reynolds vehicle ever was the TV sitcom from the early 90's called "Evening Shade." Of course it had the benefit of a great cast…Marilu Henner, Hal Holbrook, Charles Durning, Ossie Davis, Michael Jeter, etc. They all conspired to make Burt look good.
I didn't know he was up the astronaut in ToE. While I was never a big fan of Burt, I did like the film mentioned in this thread, and "Sharky's Machine."
CIA Chief Leon Paneta is finding that out now.
I liked him in that series of Evening Shade…and he was pretty good in Mystery, Alaska (ask me why I saw that one! LOL)
Man, those rednecks HAD been in the woods too long if they thought Ned Beattys' arse looked good! You know, films made in the early to mid seventies were some of the most daring films ever made. American filmmakers were able to make quirky, non formula films for an adult audience hence Deliverence, China Town, The Conversation ,etc.
Everything you say is sadly true. If Burt had allowed himself to age normally, he could well have been America's Sean Connery.
He did make an hilarious Chubby in My name is Earl!
OR
Do not allow anyone to in your… place… that you do not know.
Before Deliverance Burt starred in a movie called Skullduggery. I saw it in the theater when it came out and never heard of it again. Anyone else ever seen it?
Burt was awesome in this movie, but basically became a parody later on. Even during the "Smokey and the Bandit Days", when all the women thought he was the stuff – I just never saw it.
In other news, I dare not look. Is it safe to turn on the TV again? Is Teddy laid to rest, or propped up somewhere with a sign that say, "Pass Healthcare Reform" and name it after me?
Looking at that picture of a young Burt Reynolds I see a guy who had the looks, charisma, and ability to be one of the most memorable actors of all time. Of course he was wildly popular for a while, but most everything he was in doesn't hold up well today. In films like Deliverance, you see he had the potential to be a great dramatic actor. He desperately needed someone to help him make better film choices, much like Travolta today.
John Voight actually does have a purty mouth…
<edit>
I guess I should stipulate that it looks better on Angelina Jolie.
It did give new meaning to "squeal like a pig." Before, I thought it was an oink oink here and an oink oink there

If you've had enough of the tributes this weekend, Iowahawk has provided insights on Norm Snitker – a real american hero. RIP
I just watched the DVD of "The Seven-Ups" Starring Roy Scheider…an underrated movie from the 70's….Picked up this and "Charlie Varrick"… I was wondering why the the car chase in this was so good if not thest ever filmed: same producer, Phillip D'antoni who also did "French Connection" and "Bullit"..Actor/Stuntman Bill Hickman also the lead driver in this scene as well as driving the Charger in "Bullit" He also did the stunt driving in FC, not many can say they were part of three of the most memorable car chases ever made ..if you havent seen this, pick it up you wont be sorry. Some more on Hickman: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Hickman I would love to see John Nolte's take on this film some day.

Sorry, earlier I posted the wrong link somehow.
The best part of the Smokey and the Bandit series was Jackie Gleason. He stole the movie. Jerry Reed's goober routine got old very quickly, may he rest in peace.
I'll take our Appalachian inbreds over the Kennedys any day of the week. For the most part they keep to themselves and don't try to inflict their craziness on others.
So true. The story is is the male lead in Terms of Endearment was written specifically for him, but he couldn't take it because he was obligated to make "Stroker Ace". And the Oscar goes to…Jack Nicholson.
A chicken suit?
Try Stroker Ace. I'm not kidding – he wore one in that movie.
Zardoz is excellent.
Good call. TSU is a thrilling movie, like you said, underrated and unknown, for the most part.
Reynolds always leaves me totaly cold. IMO he is a very unmoving, unconvincing 'actor'.
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FIRES-
BIG FIRES BURNING IN THE LOCAL FOOTHILLS
"I Witness News"
by L.B. "Oscar" Mayer
They're calling it the "Station" fire and is burning for the last few days up in La Canada. The smell of the smoke is pervasive everywhere and the air qulaity is terrible. Even with all the wondows closed, I can smell it inside my apartment.
The smoke and even the flames can be seen from down here b/c the elevation climbs as you head toward the fire area.
Along Linda Vista Drive as it approaches JPL, people are parking to view the spectacle. Some of the cars are barely pulled off the road and it would be a problem if that section of the road was heavily traveled.
From Linda Vista and from the street that is above the Rose Bowl and golf course, you can also see the smoke, planes and flames.
Along Foothill Blvd which is the main concourse that connects Pasadena, La Canada, La Crescenta, Sunland and Tujunga, the flames and mostly the smoke are plainly visible. It is the street in the residences noth of Foothill Blvd where the potential for death and danger are most likely. These streest climb and climb and then dead end right at the foothills where the fires are burning.
The fires are burning north by northwest along the ridges and the gap that leads up to Acton which is on the Sierra Highway next to I-14. They expect the fire to be there by tomorrow.
Many of the canyon and foothill roads are closed and more will be closing.
I almost went up to Acton today not knowing that the fire was almost there. My guess is that they may close both the Sierra Highway and parts of I-14 tonight or tomorrow.
I was up in Santa Clarita on the Ridge Route as far noth as the Templin Highway and the smopke was very visible from there. One huge mushroon cloud of smoke dark and dirty at the bottom and middle, then angel white at the top. That's maybe 40 miles away.
I'm on a hilltop, so I am getting the tainted air quite heavily. If I drive down to the lower part of town, the air is much cleaner. Too bad for me.
20K acres have burned just in this one "Station" fire alone. Mixed reports are coming in saying that much of the fuel is brush 20 – 30 feet high which has not burned in 40 – 60 years! Trees and now structures are burning as well.
We were luck up until just 3 or so days ago and then it all began to go up.
The three other locals fires are coming under control, but this very local fire is now the big one.
The heat has been brutal 99 – 104 today where I was. My car temp said 93 while it was still parked from overnight in the carport area.
The humidity is single digit. The only thing not occuring is wind. The fire cheif said he had never seen a fire this big spread so fast without the 'help' of wind.
The local mountains and towns are just shrouded in smoke and the big mushroom cloud just sits there because of the lack of wind.
Raging ridges of flames can be seen climbing one big hillside alone. Planes fly above it scouting the area.
It's hard to fault the people parked in their cars at a good distance for watching the sensation. You don't see this all the time, so close, so vivid. It's a show for certain, but a show which everyone will be happy to see conclude without any more injury and destruction.
Deliverance was the first R movie I ever snuck into as a kid. In 1972, the hillbilly-on-bourgeois rape scene in a mainstream feature was a real shock. Years later I worked on a film that used Bill "Squeal Like A Pig" McKinney in a small role. The guy is an absolute force of nature. I can't think of anyone else who could have pulled off his seminal role as the Mountain Man any better. (Insert "pulled off" "seminal" and "insert" jokes here.) And he told the funniest, most ribald stories ever.
Burt has plastic surgery mainly to repair the shattered facial bones he received when hit with a steel chair on the set. The stunt man grabbed a real chair instead of a break-away.
Burt lost so much weight, everyone thought he had AIDS. With the exception of George Hamilton and a few others, VERY few. Most of his 'friends' disappeared not wanting to be associated with him in case a possible scandal broke. He talks about it on Lipton's Inside the Actor's Studio.
BTW, no one is mentioning Sharkey's Machine. Excellent film with an excellent cast and great score.
Has Ashley Judd been notified of this outrage! Clearly Burt is going after wolves. And haven't you heard, our government values a wolf at $400,000 vs. human life at $250,000:
http://www.riograndefoundation.org/new/articles/?...
That is just way too funny! I'll have to tell my sister about that.
How does anyone forget Boogie NIghts?
Ah want you to SQUEAL LIKE A PIG!!!
thank you.. it was so much better than I remembered. Ripe for a remake I'd bet…..and I didnt realize the disc has 2 sides…I thought only the full screen version was on the disc..turned it over and saw it said side b and it had the widescreen and the featurette called "Anatomy Of A Chase"….4 weeks to film the chase scene!! and of course the finale to the chase was a one take only deal and what a chance the stuntman took on that one….
Burt didn't embrace aging all that well…and there was the problem when he was injured filming City Heat with Clint. That being said, he has to be a Top 10 actor of all time. Make no mistake…he had the skills…all you have do is watch Deliverance (his best, I think) or The Longest Yard. He dominated the late 70's/early 80's with Smokey and the Bandit (for the record part II and III never happened) and Cannonball Run (again, part II never happened). Evening Shade was great and he was robbed of the Oscar for his Boogie Nights performance. There's tons of other stuff to mention…but when you talk about all time leading men…Burt is up near the top. And, god bless him, he's a Florida State Seminole…
reminds me of a T-shirt I saw while on a job on the east side if my state (Michigan)
"I'm so tough, I vacation in Detroit"
no, you're only racist and evil if you shop at WalMart.

His milkshake brought all the boys to the yard…
I so wish I could give ya more than a plus 1 on that one!
they do that by keeping their cameras focused into New York City instead of at us up state rednecks on the other side of the river.
thought's shifted to Barney Frank telling Larry Byrd, "you have a puwty mouth"… ok now I need sanitizer.. alot of it!
I'm afraid…really, really afraid to tell you, but not only did SatB 2 & 3 happen, but Stroker Ace also made an appearance around this time. That was the nadir of Burt's career. There was no place to go but up after that one.____Cannonball Run did have one redeeming value: it re-united the Rat Pack if only for a brief cameo.
