In the original she was just some random chick that announces she has no fear of the bogeyman on the bogeyman's front porch. He finds this offensive so he kills all her friends and sets them up as a haunted house display to scare the beejeezus out of her and get her into the spirit of the evening's festivities before the main event, Laurie's own murder. The whole second half of the movie, from Micheal's point of view, is just an elaborate Halloween prank.
