Name this movie: An ace CIA operative, condemned as a rogue and now hunted by the Company, bashes and crashes his way through colorful foreign settings, pursued by heavily armed hit men, while back at Langley headquarters an inscrutable deputy director and one of his top lieutenants are arousing the...

The pope consults him on matters of morality. His charity collects ammunition for the needy. He killed every delta smelt in the country. Why? "It was either the fish or the judge. And killing judges is not conservative." He shamed Lindsay Lohan into taking up the veil.
He is … the most conservative man in the world.
Wow…that all flew right over my head. I guess I need to spend more time following celebrity gossip…
"He tried welfare one day just to see what it was like."
Man, how did you miss Disney's Alice'? You had a deprived childhood…you should have grown up to become a liberal.

or watching Dos XXX commercials
LOL. Knowledge comes from all sorts of strange sources.
Didn't Danny Elfman used to be in Oingo Boingo? I like what he did in "The Kingdom" where he did a wonderful piece that sounded like "Explosions in the Sky."
Tim Burton has practically created his own unique genre. And despite occasional misfires (Mars Attacks, Willy Wonka), he usually gets away with it. The man´s a treasure. Having said that, I cannot get excited about the trailer for Alice in Wonderland – it looks like Burton on autopilot to me. Still, one movie to be cautiously hopeful about.
JD looks like Willie Wonka channelled the Joker here- this is DEFINITELY NOT The most conservative man in the world here.
He is going to have everyone channeling their inner fear of clowns.
Like the healthcare bill, we won't really know which end is up.
Wow, carrot tops Brother.
If Lewis Carroll were alive today he’d probably pick Burton to bring his story to the big screen, it has the potential to be great. When we fall down the rabbit hole with Alice, I hope it’s as cool an adventure as the book, …we’ll see.
The only must see in that group is Mermaid. Pocohantas is PC garbage and Tarzan is a nice try, but not essential, same with Hunchback which is given a happy ending.
I still don't get it.
When I was taking a shower, I just had a thought. I saw earlier Hillary Clinton's comment about elections in Florida. Now, we also have a couple of other things that have happened during her latest trip (including the Mr. Clinton blow up).
First, Hillary's last chance to be president is 2012. After that, she'll be way into her 60s. And like it or not, she'll be too old. But she can't run against Obama as the sitting sec. of state. Nor could she run for president against Obama if she quits, that would look bad for her. But if she would to be fired? Asked to resign? She could turn it around and Hillary could play the victim card again. This time she could cast Obama as the bad man.
I don't know if I'm right or wrong, but Hillary is a shark, and sharks can smell when there is blood in the water.
Watching a Brad Pitt movie doesn't make sense to me.
Woodstock, 40 year anniversary weekend. Day 3. By the time, Jimi Hendrix, took the stage, after weather/rain delays, it was Monday morning. As the closing act, his performance of 'The Star-Spangled Banner' is one for the ages. Play it loud/proud:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAvj5T5WUl0&fe...
Peace. Love. Take care.
I posted this yesterday, but I feel it bears repeating, especially when there is so much discussion of the Brad Pitts, Johnny Depps, and Bill Mahers of this world. Are there any other celebrities like this?
Ok, we put up with all the Michael Jackson stories. So can we expect any tributes to Elvis? The anniversary of his death is tomorrow. To the naysayers, I give you this: He loved his Mama, he served in the regular US Army, his favorite movie was "Patton," he could recite McArthur's Old Soldiers Never Die speech word for word, he never dodged paying his taxes, and he genuinely loved his fans and gave millions to charities, particularly local ones in his hometown (which wasn't Hollywood), and never bragged about what a good person he was. I miss the King.
Can sharks feel fat?
Tim Burton's best movie? No contest: Ed Wood.
and he didn't molest boys.
I urge everyone to take a moment today to reflect on E , on this, the anniversary of his being called home.
He is … the most conservative man in the world. – Funnee!
IRL – the first commercial was inspired, but all the rest had been merely valiant efforts as if someone else had written them.
This new Tim Burton pic – another contempo film I can't get excited over….same with all of his work – even the ones I like…if they had never existed, my life would still be the same………versus movies that actually moved me.
I just don't see what all the fuss is about most contempo films and players. Just seems like manufactured hype.
And now – back to sleep on a chilly and damp Sunday morning in Los Angeleez.
How could the Founding Fathers have left nationalized healthcare out of the Constitution? Oh well, what can one expect from Bible-thumping, gun-clinging, freedom-loving, white males. Thank Allah for Obama and the wise Latina Sonia, our hope, and change, and "Deliverance", is at hand. Bend over America.
In other music news, did you see the story about this cat wandering around "like a complete unkown, with no direction home?"
http://apnews.myway.com//article/20090815/D9A3346...
You are assuming nothing untoward happens to Obama in the meantime.
The left could gain much from that – sympathy vote; blaming conservs as villians of the highest order 'cause the left and the MSM would make double-damn sure whatever happened would be laid in the lap of the rightwing, even though the left would orchestrate it start to finish.
I would very much hate to be in Obama's shoes if the left can't get their agenda implemented as they want.
Jimi Hendrix was an amazing talent and I know his guitar of choice was the upside-down “Stratocaster.” Woodstock was indeed a seminal moment in music history, socially that’s another story. But the man who made so much of the great ‘60s guitar hero possible along with Leo Fender, Les Paul died last week. I hope BH will do a post on this great man, next to Chet Atkins arguably the greatest guitar player of the last century, if Hendrix were alive would probably agree. I know you’ve made comments Jimmy, but a full post would be cool, and Woodstock as well.
There's not a chance in h*** she'll ever be asked to resign. Compare America's elections to some third world mess? Right on, right on, right on, she shares the Dear One's views. Blow up about Bill? Great fun, I'm sure the Dear One enjoys the spectacle. She is right where the Dear One wants her.
And he definitely wasn't anorexic…
Amen.
You are right. Obama should be looking over his left shoulder, not his right.
Dear Lord, that's a creepy image to stare at half away on a Sunday morning. Thanks Big H
Wow! What a mental giant this guy is! He speaks and the world stands still! And so professorial with his "long gray beard."
Between Pitt and Maher, they both don't generate enough brain power to light a candle.
Dear Lord, that's a creepy image to stare at half awake on a Sunday morning. Thanks Big H
Timing's wrong. Serious times with concerns about work, family, home, and stopping a take over of our nation. Distraction…please. Silliness…timing's wrong.
You mean, like a communist shoots JFK and it gets blamed on the military-industrial complex?
But Oswald was a loner. The idea that the left has a plan to do away with Obama is really, really far out there. The real world isn´t like that.
Hillary knows only one thing: she´s been had. She should never have exchanged a Senate seat for Secretary of State. Obama sent her on a mission to the dark side of the moon and she knows it.
well-put.
Wish I'd have thought of saying it.
I wish it weren't.
But, if you were a betting man, where would you put your money?
Thanks for that Jimmy. Since Les Paul and Chet Atkins were just mentioned, here is one in their honor as well: It is debated how much Les actually contributed to the original design and I always liked the SG featured in yesterday's WHO video, but make no mistake Les and the Gibson Les Paul were great:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByGsHTlKmWk
Thank you StanH. I grew up loving Chevys and Cadillacs, hot dogs, babies and grandma, and hot weather. Now, GM is gone, hot dogs will kill ya, babies and grandmas are expendable, and hot weather will kill us all. And…and…now Les Paul is gone. Carson, Martin, Benny, Burns, Reagan, Kennedy, Hughes, others with class and original ideas…down the road. Time to demand more and remember the best. Thanks StanH.
Very nice Jed, very nice indeed.
There's not a chance in h- that she'll be asked to resign. Comparing the Fla 00 election outcome to some third world farce? She could have been channeling the Dear Leader! Snarling about Bill stealing the spotlight? Too good, too good, it's just the kind of self-destruction the dear leader was looking for when he put her there. Nope, she's in for the duration.
He speaks French.., in Russian
Absolutely! Roald Dahl was one weird and outlandish writer and Burton's interpretation, while not what the public was used to, was spot on. I enjoyed Willy immensely.
blah, blah, blah…….I am so sick of the "social, epochal moment of woodstuck". All you have to know about the social implications of woodstuck can be viewed by seeing the trash and crap left by the hypocritical, morally retarded "aquarians". Sheesh……….I am sooooooo glad that I am not affiliated with that generation. Missed it by…. that much.
Now musically, different story………….
Thank you, Les Paul!
I just saw Brad Pitt (Mr. Angela Jolie) on an entertainment channel saying he is not going to marry Angela until all the Homosexuals have the right to marry quote "because no one should tell someone else what to do".
Except of course for Obama, the DNC, Congress, ACORN, the Socialist Party, the IRS, Justice Dept., State Dept, the UN, the Hauge, the International court, UN climate change panel, Handgun control inc, the NAACP and the ACLU, other the that no one should tell anyone else what to do.
What a wus I am a little surprised he hasn't married George Clooney by now.
Speaking of guitar heroes and Woodstock don’t forget the outtakes Johnny Winter playing “Mean Town Blues.” A lot of good music is on the “B-Roll.” Alvin Lee and Ten Years After, played more than “Going Home.”
The heroic martyr or the ridiculed failure? Who would you want representing your party?
At least with Ted Kennedy they could keep him in office, then propped up as someone important, although that must have been quite a strain. JFK, with the Bay of Pigs, Vietnam, letting the Cuban Missile Crisis happen period, and then the affair(s)…. Possibly the Greatest President in US history!
Couldn't agree more.
I agree with Brad Pitt … I don't want the government to come into my church one day and tell it that it has to marry homosexuals.
Stupid Hollywood people are so narrow-minded and short-sighted.
Whether this author is a conservative or liberal is immaterial. What is important is her last paragraph.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/arti...
"Washington's power brokers have suited up to underscore their authority and the seriousness of the subject matter. And bully for them. But their attire also says: I am the boss of you. All those howling citizens — in their T-shirts and ball caps and baggy shorts — are saying: No, you're not. "
I am wondering when the people in Washington will remember that. Does it have to come down to 2010 before they finally get the idea that they are not our owners?
It's been, what?… almost two months? And I still can't get away from all the Michael Jackson hype every-time I turn on the tv. I can't decide wether to scream or throw-up.
You can bet that if they do do a special for Elvis that MJ and all the comparisons of the two will be all over it.
Makes me sick.
“The Woodstock Nation is Born,” …Yuk! Socially Woodstock is a blight on the world, when I was kid I bought into that horse squeeze, hook-line and sinker, Carter cured me, …I got better. Musically however that’s a different story it was indeed a gathering of some great bands and musicians, it’s to bad we don’t get see many of the so called outtakes, some really great performances.
Undoubtedly this will be another twisted version of a children's classic to which I would never take a child. The remake of Willy Wonka was outrageous.
Neighbors called reporting a suspicious character.
He wasn't recognized.
He was asked for his ID.
OMGosh! Then what happened?
He cooperated and all ended well?
Now, that's just boring : )
Edward Scissor Hands is still his best.
Roald Dahl is a fantastic writer! I love everything he's written (that I've read). His style is one of a kind. Would highly recommend his poems to older chidren.
But, without comparisons to the book, I did not like Depp's Wonka at all. The first movie is far superior. IMO.
** The heroic martyr or the ridiculed failure? Who would you want representing your party? **
From the standpoint of a liberal/dem, whichever one would ensure the greater political advantage for my party, no matter the cost.
The first movie wasn't true to the book at all, and missed the point (to me at least) of Charlie being the "Good kid," and the others "bad," what with the entire Fizzy Lifting Drinks scene. Like I said, I liked it, but the fact that Burton's was more accurate to the books makes it the preferred version to me. If the old one wasn't a great musical, it wouldn't be anywhere near as good.
Excellent. The odd posts like this are what endear me to this place.
First off, Burton's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was not a remake, it was a new adaptation of the book, and a more faithful one at that. Second, have you ever actually READ the Alice novels? They're not exactly the most child-friendly by modern standards, containing some very disturbing images and nonsense.
Looking back on Johnny Depp movies movies, I would say that likes to wear lots of makeup. "more blush mate"
I remember when Elvis died in '77–I was ten and I think the only song of his was remotely familiar with was "Hound Dog." Kind of hard to avoid the grim similarities: two men past their prime, heavily drug dependent, about to to attempt a comeback tour. These guys are poster children for how to run iconic careers into the ground with bad personal choices. (Jackson's obviously much worse) Remember–it was Priscilla who built Elvis' legacy into the financial powerhouse it is now–Presley died with a relatively small estate.
Not to mention the never-married Lewis Carroll's personal penchant for taking pictures of little girls…often unclothed.
Is Johnny Deep trying to prepare himself to be the next Michael Jackson, but without the singing talent? He's getting weirder and weirder.
"I can't decide wether to scream or throw-up."
Just think…MJ was once EP's son-in-law. Whew…the irony, huh?
Go ahead and throw-up. Then you'll have plenty of room for a fried peanut butter and nanner samwich in honor of the King.
Clarification for you youngwhippersnappers:
Elvis was not on a comeback tour. He toured regularly to sold-out houses right up until his death. His death was a real shocker because he was always on the road and his popularity never waned. When he topped the scales at 250 lbs, women were still waiting in long lines to see him. That's what we used to call a real star. Was anyone truly surprised at Jacko's sudden demise? Also, Presley's estate would have been much bigger if the Colonel had not skimmed his 50% off the top lo those many years.
Yeah, Priscilla emerged as the grieving widow (even though they had been divorced for 5 years) to make sure she got what she thought she had coming.
Maybe Pitt isn't so stupid. He's figured out a way to have all the fun as Mr. Jolie, but take none of the legal and moral responsibility. The self-righteous self-aggrandization is all an act. The best role of his mediocre career.
Oh yeah…
That is one conservative man….
That's a movie poster for Alice in Wonderland? Hell I thought it was a promo for the new Barry Obama movie……………..Go figure………..
Someone called me "young!" Awesome!
Hi Stan,
I didn't want to leave you hanging. I'm taking a break from Big Hollywood for a while. Rather not get into it.
It's been great to meet people like you, Jed, Joel and others. I wish everyone the best. Take care.
Johnny Depp is really sexy and awesome. From all accounts he is devoted to his family. When his daughter had a serious illness during the filming of Sweeny Todd all production of the movie came to a halt (he had asked them to re-cast the part because he did not want to work while she was in the hospital) so he could be there for her. After she recovered he made several visits to the children's ward of the hospital (in his Pirates of the Carribean costume) to visit patients and read to them. He also flew her doctor and nurses to the New York (maybe LA) premiere of Pirates 3. This info got very little press.
He might seem weird, but I think he's got his priorities straight.
Also, the gd hippies glommed on to the book in the '60s — all those mushrooms and hookahs and so forth — "Remember what the dormouse said, feed your head…" (NOT a quote from Lewis Carroll).
On the other hand, "Jabberwocky" (from "…Looking Glass") is one of my all-time favorite poems.
Good luck, Jimmy!
I like Depp a lot. His "Ed Wood" was a true artistic achievement.
I always thought he should have played Howard Hughes — if every other detail of the movie was left the same, but with Depp replacing DiCaprio, "The Aviator" would have been an all-time classic, rather than merely a very good film.
Before Les Paul there was Charlie Christian, dead by 1942 of TB at age 24. No fuss, no hype, no media frenzy for this pioneer of pioneers, this style setter for the ages.
No slam on Les Paul, but………
Uh…maybe we were little preoccupied with WW2 at the time?
SomeDame:
Fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches are fine for everyday fare, but today calls for the preparation and consumption of the Fool's Gold Loaf — a split french bread with peanut butter, grape jelly and a pound of bacon — the specialty of some diner in Colorado. Elvis would sometimes dispatch the Lisa Marie to fly out and pick up a couple.
Potentially more deadly than blowfish sushi, the Fool's Gold Loaf should only be eaten twice a year — on January 8th and August 16th.
(BTW, listened to "The Sun Sessions" this morning — will play "The Memphis Record" during dinner.)
Hillary's comment made me sick.
But yours is a bright comment! I like.
Will miss ya.
Pitt's only making a strong statement to: His children.
The Fool's Gold Loaf was always too rich for my blood. I will take your suggestion, though, but will have to substitute the pound of bacon for a slab of Spam. Will that do?
In between Sun and Memphis, treat yourself to anything Elvis Live (from the International Hotel, Hawaii, Memphis stage, etc.). A performer's performer. Long live the KING!
The "public option" is out? OK, now let's get rid of the rest of the socialism permeating our nation.
LOL!
Johnny Depp is like the proverbial little girl (in more ways than one): when he is good, he is very, very good, when he is bad…well…he just seems to be experiencing that malady that appears to strike many of today's actors: he takes himself too seriously. Lighten up, Johnny.
That said, he was great in Ed Wood and not bad as John Dillinger, albeit a bit effeminate for a real tough guy.
OT: dr_nic, why did you force Elvis to take all that prescription medication?
Good call — I've got the '68 comeback TV special, I'll cue that up as well.
depp scares me.
I must admit I think DiCaprio's HH was the best thing he's ever done next to his Arnie in Gilbert Grape. Casting Depp is an interesting concept…he's a little short to play the 6'4 Hughes, but his chops might be good enough to have pulled it off.
The pope consults him in matters of morality. His charity collects ammunition for the needy. He killed every delta smelt in the country. Why? "It was either the fish or the judge. And killing judges is not conservative." He shamed Lindsay Lohan into taking up the veil.
He is … the most conservative man in the world.
Re: Hot Dogs
Don't believe the hype from the health nazis — listen to a real expert:
http://www.texas-wiener.com/walken%20on%20hotdogs...
Count me in..
Re OT:
You know the sad story. E was such a cash cow for so many people that they started treating him like livestock — something to pep him up for the show, something else to wind him down afterwards so they could put him back in the barn for the night.
Looks like Marc Bolan meets Elijah Wood . . .or is it Johnny D.?
The only Tim Burton movie I don't like is Planet of the Apes (which, coincidentally, is the least "Tim Burton" of any of his movies). I am looking forward to this one. You can't go wrong with that cast (Depp, Bonham Carter, Christopher Lee, Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Crispin Glover [!]) and it'll be nice to get a new Danny Elfman score for a Burton film, too (he sat out Sweeney Todd since that had a pre-existing score).
I have not seen Disney's Alice in Wonderland nor have I read the book so I won't know what I'm missing with regards to changes in the source material. But after watching the teaser trailer, it looks like a strange trip indeed.
Ha! I'm pretty middle of the road with politics, actually.
I simply never got around to it. The animated Disney films weren't a big part of my childhood (I'm only 26), mostly due to lack of interest on my part. I was busy watching The Sandlot, Rookie of the Year, Pee-Wee and Ernest movies, Get Smart on Nick at Night (thanks to my folks), Inspector Gadget, Muppet movies, Three Stooges marathons on TBS (again, thanks to my folks)… but no animated Disney flicks.
Confession: I saw Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King for the first time when I was 18 or 19. I still haven't seen Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Tarzan, The Little Mermaid, and Lilo & Stitch. The only Disney movies I've seen for the past 15 years have been Pixar productions.
Yep, he certainly was. You can even see Elfman performing (as part of Oingo Boingo) in Rodney Dangerfield's Back to School. They play "It's a Dead Man's Party" during (what else?) a party scene.
I've been an Elfman fan since childhood. I don't think that highly of his music today but during the 80s and early 90s, he was on fire with Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
I highly recommend the two compilation CDs released of his music: Danny Elfman: Music for a Darkened Theatre – Volumes 1 and 2.
