The first and the best of the disaster movies. In the book, Arthur Hailey showed that abortion, then being practiced in Sweden, was an abomination. The movie gave, The Unexpected Births are quite special.
I tried Netflixing this but they kept sending me the disc with the sequels – turns out the Airport/Airport 75 discs are mislabeled on their end. Luckily, they had it available for instant viewing, albeit cropped from 2.35:1 to 1.78:1.
You know what? Despite seeing Airplane! a million times, I thought this was a very entertaining film! It's a bit long but never dragged, the melodrama never came across as cheesy, and I don't even recall any unintentional laughter on my part (the sequels on the other hand…). I did want to punch Mrs. Quonsett in the face at one point but it all worked out in the end.
Barry freakin' Nelson, Scott. There it is.
How much does it cost to buy the votes of the poor in NYC? $200.00

Which is amazing! Most of it was from the stimulus bill.
I love watching live Town Hall meetings. The snarky politicians are so rude, I am amazed that no angry mob member has taken a swing at them ala Jerry Springer. Paid for by special interests and supported by ACORN and SIEU, they are assured their up-coming re-election will be stolen to assure their cushy seat in Congress forever.
PajamasMedea has a Michael Yon interview posted at their PJTV site. And the always lovely Dana Loesch with one about town hall meetings. Dana has post about a new Obama poster on her blog. If we make it through a day with more anti-Obama posters than magazine covers, we win. Trees lose but we win.
I'm surprised too, and I hope no one ever takes a swing at them, it wouldn't look good at all. There is enough negative spin on the townhall protestors already.
I hope that the Democrat party doesn't get rid of Pelosi until we get her out of position in 2010. If we beat her fairly and squarely in the arena of ideas then most of the liberal agenda goes away for many years.

The Obamabots/kool-aid drinkers comments are enlightening. Short story, they don't like what Camilia has to say.
Where is Alphonzo? Has anyone seen him lately?
Page 1 out of the Hugo Chavez playbook. I saw a picture of people lined up in New York to get their checks, the caption under it should have read: "Your tax dollars at work, keeping me in office. -Barry O"
So the little 11-yr-old girl at the Obama town hall meeting in NH was a plant?
Another plant? Evey time Obama has a meeting, there are plants in the audience with 'canned' questions or statements.
If any of his programs or bills are so great, why does this administration have to plant people to ask the 'right' questions?
How much more inept and incompetent must Obama show himself to be before people recognize how much a fraud he truly is?
"Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. Their children, brought up easy, let it slip away again, poor fools. And their grandchildren are once more slaves." ~~D.H. Lawrence, Classical American Literature, 1922
They’ve discovered a money tree in NYC, free money. Two hundred dollars to the sainted poor for back to school supplies, hey it’s only 175million, boy that Barry and his partner in crime George Soros are swell fellows. Now it’s time for circuses, wee…
It's now happening in Florida:

I love how the government worker – slash – union drone says he's never seen anything so offensive. Where the hell has he been the last 8 years?? Anyway, this is spreading all over, I hope it's nationwide soon as more and more people wake up from their media-induced hero-worship.
We have had several arrest at town hall meetings here in St Louis, all of them were supporters of this so called health care bill.
Well can you imagine if someone actually asked Obama a real question in one of his staged "townhall" meetings? Can you imagine him stuttering and flailing away in the face of actual scrutiny?
I also love how he says critics are using scare tactics when this he himself said that if we don't pass his bills NOW there will be a great catastrophe. He's hijacking the country with his Alinsky techniques and people are getting wise to it FINALLY….
Wow, the Obamabots on there are really foaming at the mouth. frightening to know that they can actually vote…
Am I alone in appreciating the common sense that peeks through some of Camille Paglia's articles?
And who the %#*@ is Edie Falco?
It is nation-wide. It started out in Los Angeles, CA now it is in Clermont, FL. I wonder what will happen if they do catch one and prosecute? My guess would be more would show up everywhere.
She is the actress who play Soprano's wife. She now plays a self-medicating nurse.
'Airport'- 'Grand Hotel' in the sky…
Based on one of the most famous, and oft repeated themes in filmic history- people thrown together by fate and their lives as a snapshot- 'Airport' is easliy the best bad movie ever made, pure American Velveeta, smooth and creamy.
A great Elmer Bernstein score and Dean Martin(!) as a pilot help immeasurably. Great guilty pleasure…
Alfred Newman, not Elmer Bernstein. (Bernstein scored Airplane! though.)
Think of all the great spec scripts floating around out there that will never be made because we just have to have a LEGO MOVIE! (smacks forehead)
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/42030
I used to play with Legos all the time as a kid. And if/when I have kids, hopefully they'll like to play with them too. But a movie? Really?!

Obama On Single Payer Health Plan.

People should change the caption to the Joker from Socialism to LIAR!!!
IMO, Camille Paglia is a very unusual person – a liberal that can exercise common sense and logic. I don't agree with all her opinions, but her opinions are reasoned, well-thought-out, and worth considering.
Too bad this judge,

wasn't at this Townhall,

thanks for the heads up; you are correct- we even have the CD laying around somewhere…
obama would let his grandmother suffer in pain instead of getting a hip replacement. He says he would have paid out of his own pocket – no way, since when has he paid for anything!

Jacqueline Bisset was in Airport. I was a kid when I saw the movie but I knew what I wanted when I grew up : )
Oh no no no!!!
Obamacare wouldn't apply to those in the government! they are much too important to be lumped in with the masses….
Man, I can still sing that Main Theme. Da-da-da-daa-dat, Da-da-da-da-daaa-dat, duh-dat. In fact, I'm singing it right now in a hotel's great room, mooching off their wi-fi. Getting strange looks.
I remember her from The Deep. She was stunning…
Sounds like he was for it before he was against it…..
Ever notice how Obama and John Kerry are never in the same room?? Hmmmmm……
Zo can also be found at PJTV and if you missed any, especially the recent one with the MJ dance routine there are archives.
That woman needs to be fired yesterday. Talking on the phone while being spoken to at a townhall qualifies you for the lead in the country's biggest a$$hole award…..
It's amazing what great actors will do for a 'disaster flick". None of the early disaster movies like Towering Inferno of Earthquake would be even remotely watchable today if it wasn't for the "Movie Stars" (something we lack today) that appeared in them. Everyone in Airport was great. I'm a big Martin fan, but the late great George Kennedy stole this movie! "
Have you seen his latest?
I believe George Kennedy is still alive!
Airport was a great move. Unfortunately, there are very few good copies floating around (good sound and letterbox picture). If I remember correctly it was filmed in Todd-AO 70 mm which would make for a great Blu-Ray transfer. Kind of a shame that they haven't done it and I haven't seen anything that indicates it will go to Blu-Ray.
you believe correctly…
Mr Kennedy, whose portrayal of Joe Patroni not only stole the film but was brought back for the subsequent sequels, is also a decorated combat veteran with 16 years service in the US Army.
Still, we thought Dino was tops in this flick because of the bizarro casting choice…
This was especially good, although I am surprised she is surprised at her surprise.
"But who would have thought that the sober, deliberative Barack Obama would have nothing to propose but vague and slippery promises — or that he would so easily cede the leadership clout of the executive branch to a chaotic, rapacious, solipsistic Congress? House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, whom I used to admire for her smooth aplomb under pressure, has clearly gone off the deep end with her bizarre rants about legitimate town-hall protests by American citizens. She is doing grievous damage to the party and should immediately step down."
Falco's character on Nurse Jackie is a real trip. For some unfathomable reason, the audience is supposed to like her. Jackie looks for any excuse to turn a patient into an organ donor, sometimes falsifying organ donor cards. I guess she thought the movie Coma was a training film.
So called 'disaster films' have a long history in Hollywood, though they were never given a name until the 70s.
And there are a handful of "airplane in jeopardy" films, too.
FIVE CAME BACK – 1939 – Plane crashes in the jungle with a cross-section of passengers.
THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY – The official "AIP" grandaddy of them all film.
ZERO HOUR – (Already mentioned here)
Some of the films are dramas with a big disaster sequence near the end – and its always a whopper!
SAN FRANCISCO – 1936 – Huge earthquake in 1904
THE HURRICANE – 1937 – Sensational hurricane hits a tropical island
IN OLD CHICAGO – 1938 – The big fire of the 1880 era.
THE RAINS CAME – 1939 – Incredible rains and a dam disaster.
TYPHOON – 1940 – "B" Film with great special effects by James Bashevi of THE HURRICANE fame
GREEN DOLPHIN STREET – 1947 – Intense earthquake
And you also have the groundbreaking (haha) DELUGE from 1933 in which a tidal wave hits New York City. Incredible special effects and then it become a survivalist film with a love story!
Also – the 'modern' day PANIC IN YEAR ZERO from 1962 with Ray Milland and family on their own in the mountains when an A-Bomb destroys Los Angeles.
There are more.
*Funny sequence in some 1933 film with Lee Tracy depicting the 1933 Long Beach earthquake and the newspaper aftermath with huge headlines on the big out of town newspapers – LA DESTROYED BY EARTHQUAKE!!, HUGE EARTHQUAKE LEVELS LOS ANGELES!!, GIANTS QUAKE ROCKS LA!!…..and then they show a local Los Angeles newspaper…which has the story below the fold…"Small earthquake hits LA, Not too many people hurt."
And he can be seen in old episodes of SGT. BILKO where he was a technical advisor (whilst still in the service, IIRC.)
What about all the taxpayer dollars that ACORN and the rest of the thugish groups are going to be using when they hire people to go to town hall meetings to shout down naysayers of the health care bill? I heard where they will be paying these shouters anywhere from 10-15 dollars an hour.
These democratic politicians came out of the womb crooked.
The minute I heard her speak I knew she was a plant. Little kids are being used all the time for the adult agendas. You should see what's going on here in phoenix right now. The ILLEGAL immigrant advocates are using the children of deported ILLEGAL immigrants to march on Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
I liked this quote from that story. Soooo freakin' hilarious when you think back on how THEY portrayed Bush every chance they got.
"He looks so mean, gruesome and evil and this is not something you want to portray your president. Very disrespectful,"
I don't agree with most of Paglias opinions/articles but every now and then she comes out with a really good one. I saved one from a few months ago that was REALLY good.
He's a liar and he goes which ever way the wind is blowing at the time.
He would have pushed her under the bus.
Good description of "Airport," dcase, but it was Alfred Newman, not Elmer B., who scored the music.
John Kerry is Obama's personality deprived alter ego, whoda thunk it?
I wish that were true, but he is only lying when he pretends to be moderate, bipartisan, sensible, on our side. He has spend far too much political capital on his ultraliberal policies to be indifferent.
Don´t forget: He never liked to work hard and be held accountable. If he can pull us down in one term and then leave (say, to become UN Secretary General) that may be fine by him.

ScottDS….Well I'll be damned! I thought he had passed. That's what I get for thinking………..Thanks for the correction and Sorry to Mr. Kennedy…
That's on page 2. If you can't buy then off, beat them up. The worst part about it is in some instances they are using the police to violate the first amendment by dragging these people out. I heard about the paid shouters too, you just got to keep thinking 2010/2012.
Ah the old disaster movies. This one was not quite as funny as Towering Inferno, but it is interesting that it was posted a day after "Airplane!" Maybe the newdisaster movie should be made titled "health Care Reform."
I tried Netflixing this but they kept sending me the disc with the sequels – turns out the Airport/Airport '75 discs are mislabeled on their end. Luckily, they had it available for instant viewing, albeit cropped from 2.35:1 to 1.78:1.

Also: I don't know about Airport but its sequels, and others like The Towering Inferno and Earthquake, had plenty of scenes left on the cutting-room floor which were added in for television. Unfortunately, for the most part, this footage doesn't end up on DVD. And these films don't air on network TV anymore so all this material is probably rotting in a vault somewhere.
re: "To bad this judge,"
I didn't even bother to read the story 'cause I started laughing so much!
And didn't someone have a Sarah Palin manequin in a noose hanging from their house? The depths to which the left went was disgusting, but God forbid someone puts a pic of Obama as the Joker on a mailbox, that's just disrespectful…..
cough*bullshit*cough…..
I think one of the requirements to become POTUS is that you have had to have worked a full time job for at least 5 years.
gotta look for that… thanks…
Yeah … and just like the Joker, Hussein has a ready-made lie on hand to feed to his victims.
You bet!
It is interesting to see him, a non actor at this time, trying to keep pace and be as manic as the rest of the BILKO cast.
ps – He gives a great performance in the woefully under-rated MIRAGE with Peck and Matthau. This is a terrific picture!
About the Loss of John Hughes.
I read an interview with Actor Kevin Bacon. He mentioned the one film that he did with the late Mr. Hughes, "She's having a baby". That film is almost never mentioned in Mr. Hughes body of work. Since it wasn't a big money maker, it is called a "Misfire" .
Mr. Bacon understood that it was Mt. Hughes's personal film, The film that talked about how he went from a kid, wanting to play all the time, to being a man. I love that film. And as much as I liked "16 Candles" and most of his other work, "She's having a baby" was Mr. Hughes best film.
Thank you sir. You will be missed.
OMG!!!!!!!! You were right. Some men have broke into PJTV and Fonzy is now a DUCK!!!! Or something. Woe, be this the end of spacem,,,,,,,,,, I mean Zo? Stay tuned.
late great George Kennedy

George ain't dead yet!
He is only 84 years old
"What we've got here is failure to communicate."

Let's not forget the great George Kennedy as the chief engineer for the airline. It was nice to see his promotion in Airport '75.
'Charade' is even better, Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn- but Matthau, Coburn and Kennedy as the baddies… good stuff.
I could watch the explosion and the bad guy getting sucked out of the plane over and over again.
Love this movie.
Ms. Paglia seems to be an open-minded, fair writer. Interesting to read.
Ms. Paglia does seem to be open-minded, fair writer. Interesting to read.
No joke.
It's on one of the cable movie channels every now and then, because I recorded it not too long ago.
I loved disaster movies. Unfortunately, they've become so politically correct, I no longer even bother. Instead of being entertained and treated to special effects I'd never want to see, I get to be instructed on "global warming"
and man's inhumanity to himself. What's even worse, is I'm being instructed by semi-functional idiots.
I never miss an Airing of Airport. Never. I just love it.
