Conservatives often talk about what they don’t like about Hollywood. That’s okay, but it’s not productive. Maybe it’s time we talked about what we do like? More to the point, let’s point out when Hollywood has gotten it right. And that brings me to the...

"The Passion Part II"
Perhaps I'm going to be the only one who feels this way – - but would love to see a Red Dawn remake.
Of course, in true current Hollywood fashion – - we would be the invaders.
I don't want to try and sway anyone but OF COURSE IT'S THE ROCKFORD FILES!!!
No James Garner is like The Nicght Stalker without Darren McGavin … and we all know how well that went.
Rockford was a personality driven show like Sanford and Son or The Honeymooners…
Stupidest. Idea. Ever.

I voted for Red Dawn. I don't think anyone is going to touch Captain Blood anyway, one of my all time favorites.
John makes an excellent argument for Rockford Files, but I envision the PC police doing a worse job with the beloved Red Dawn.
Bonus vote for the Clash of the Titans re-imagining, which may actually be a halfway decent idea. Never mind…
I voted for Harvey…because no one messes with a classic Jimmy Stewart movie.
I however AM looking forward to the A-Team remake. I love the show and hopefully I will LOVE the movie!
"Red Dawn" was and is a classic. But, if you have watched it lately, it has not aged well. I would love to see John Milius do a modern take on it.
Is Spielberg really going to remake “Harvey.” The original is perfect IMO, who will be recast in Jimmy Stewart’s role? Hell, why don’t they remake, “It’s a Wonderful Life, The Wizard of Oz (again). Spielberg is out of ideas, and so is Hollywood it would seem..
I'm with you! TOTALLY looking forward to the Red Dawn remake. WOLVERINES!!!
They all sound pretty awful.
Spielberg is totally unable to make a picture that doesn't remind me that in his heart he remains a spoiled teenager. The dude just never grew up (e.g. E.T., which I found truly cringe-worthy)
Actually, Captain Blood in space has kinda already been done, only darker and minus the happy ending: Firefly.
Agreed with John Nolte on the Rockford Files. It required the considerable presence of James Garner, a big rewrite of the concept by Stephen J. Cannell, and a fantastic supporting cast with Joe Santos and Noah Beery in particular classing up the joint, along with Stuart Margolin providing a constant, sleazy presence in a magnificent performance.
Funny Nolte mentions Darren McGavin. McGavin, no mean actor, starred in the "Outsider" in 1968, which was created by Roy Huggins, and flopped mightily because the lead character was too much of a loser (and lost) for audiences to stomach. Cannell hellped Huggins rework elements (McGavin's Ross was orphaned, no family/friends) and lightened the tone considerably. Even the ending of the series credits opener with Rockford released from jail had a light tone — final image of Rockford fishing with his father at the pier.
This sounds as bad as the remake of the Bionic Woman (all "dark and edgy" — a cross between late-run "Buffy" and the BattleStar Galactica remake) or Knight Rider. The Rockford Files was magic in a bottle, never to be recaptured. I'd rather see shows that were interesting but flawed be remade as Huggins did with "the Outsider." The show-killing flaws are easier to see, and a lot more fixable. "Tenspeed and Brown Shoe" (straight laced accountant, con man team up as private eyes), "JJ Starbuck," (billionaire businessman seeks to right wrongs after his wife and son die) would be good candidates. Hardly anyone remembers them, they started out strong but collapsed due to writing problems, the core concept is good and not over-used, and the comparisons between something "magic in a bottle" won't happen. Or how about "Adderly" a Canadian import, concept was an injured spy farmed out to a make-work government agency "Bureau of Miscellaneous Affairs" trying to get back into the spy game.
Everyone loves a fixer-upper, no one loves taking an already existing mansion and slapping purple paint on it.
No imagination left in Hollywood !! Why not try a production of Gilgamesh, the oldest epic story ever?
I screamed NOOOOOOOO when I saw the announcement that Spielberg is gonna mess with Harvey – I LOVE movie!! How dare he?!
Word up, Spielberg, it wont matter WHO you put up as Elwood P Dowd…THEY WILL FAIL. YOU will fail.
GADS! Why doesnt Spielberg film his friend Harry getting his chest waxed again. Now THAT would be entertainment!!
That would be cool!
No Garner, no Rockford Files.
Here, here! American Patriots fight back against Communism…how real world, current and relevant can you get…
Just don't remake Shane! Leave me with something Heh.
I can't even begin to imagine who in entertainment could take James Garner's place. That would be like a remake of Ben-Hur without Charlton Heston!
I can only imagine the little metrosexual, moral wuss-bag they will try to use. Maybe we could start taking bets on how long before that show's cancelled?
THE ROCKFORD FILES?………are you sh*tting me???
Dear God, no.
Not Harvey please. That character belongs to Jimmy Stewart. I can't think of any actor who would do it justice.
Not familar with Rockford Files or Captain Blood, so I can't comment. I would be scared of a Red Dawn remake because we'd be the bad guys, acting all silly about the peaceful muslims or some such nonsense.
Movies that should be remade – The Ugly Dachshund. This Disney classic is begging for a family friendly redo. I was just discussing with a friend the other day about the lack of non-animated family friendly movies, and this would definitely work. It's about a couple that owns cute little dachshunds, and the husband wants a manlier dog, so he gets a Great Dane. The Great Dane thinks he's a dachshund, and as he grows up, craziness ensues. It would be really cute and a lot of fun.
Out of this list "Captain Blood" in space is the most obvious choice for present-day filmakers. They can make a conventional space opera with oppressed peoples, bloodthirsty judges, slavery, evil colonialists etc. with a big battle and upbeat ending. Any current hunk can play the good captain. I only hope the family of Rafael Sabatini will see a few buck out of it. Spielberg is planning a remake of "Harvey?" I don't usually use this shorthand but WTF!!!! Spielberg has a lot of virtues but charm and light-heartedness aren't on the list. There was a made-for-TV version some years back with Harry Anderson as Elwood P. Dowd and Leslie Nielsen as Dr. Chumley and it just laid there. I don't subscribe to the "things-were-always-better-in-the-old-days" mantra but I can't see any way that director today could capture the genuine warmth and whimsey of the 1950 "Harvey" and the Mary Chase play. Forget Jimmy Stewart, who could top Josephine Hull's performance as his sister?
Whot Da HEIL!
They are redoing Red Dawn? That's a cold war era favorite. That doesn't make any sense.
Why not remake something that is already kind of bad, like Mannequin. Ah man, i just gave them another bad idea.
This is pretty easy for me. It's got to be the Harvey remake. Messing with Jimmy Stewart is a big no-no in my book.
They all sound like crap to me.
Harvey? Are you kidding me? Hollywood doesn't have the class, nor the charm left to even attempt to touch that story. Please, Steven, do us all a favor and just retire.
Rockford Files. James Garner is rolling in his gave–and I know, he ain't even dead!
Captain Blood in space. Firefly pretty much got that down. Next!
Red Dawn. Hoo boy. I imagine two things: crazed/evil/barbaric American soldiers running rampant and more moral equivalency than you can shake a stick at.

Clash of the Titans is being remade. I think.
Lemme guess the type of character the new and improved Jim Rockford will be:
A young, feminist, vegan twinkie with barely two pubic hair between his legs who hangs around with his gay BFF sidekick… toss in a hard-ass, non-caucasian police chief and mix generously with one sexually-abused/recovering-addict girlfriend and back it all up with a moody, emoesque soundtrack.
You can almost smell the Emmy Award from here!
The California Film Commission should put a stipulation clause within the production tax credit code that states, "Absolutely, Positively No Remakes, All Media, Worldwide, In Perpetuity"
I voted for Red Dawn. Though they ARE making a remake of that movie, it's just not a movie. It's a video game. Battlefield America or something wierd. I forgot the name but it's still in early development. (Only a few clips and stills so far) but it's written by the Red Dawn guy but this time it's North Korea invading us.
Yay, a pussified Rockford. Woooooooohooooooo.
John, is NBC really trying to bring back "The Rockford Files?" I haven't seen or heard anything.
Everyday at 3:00 p.m. I try to catch a rerun of Rockford. They're great no matter how many times I have seen them.
"The New Partridge Family"
Red Dawn? 20 years after the Cold War has ended? Why? There's no need for that, you guys! That would be like, well, remaking Red Dawn 20 years after the Cold War ended.
I didn't vote for Red Dawn, though, because that one doesn't anger me, it just puzzles me. I voted for Harvey. Jimmy Stewart movies should be off limits for remakes, you guys! Harvey is fine just the way it is. It's funny, it works, it stars Jimmy F#*%&@! Stewart.
Mr. Spielberg, you jumped the shark (or should I say 'nuked the fridge'?) a long time ago. I'm not angry, just disappointed. Please don't make me angry.
If they make a re-make of any of the proposed, you can wait to see the tears and smell the rotten efforts. Where is orignallity? Perhaps Holly..wood ran out it with black and white films. Or could it be, they just don't realise that the script is what makes the film.
I was swayed by the letters NBC in the Rockford Files nomination
C'mon John, you know Hollywood. A Red Dawn remake today would be wussified. The males would be all sensitive and sympathize with the enemy…because of course then they can market it overseas, right?
Well, it would b enice to see a good old fashioned America kickin' butt film, who would the Communists be? The Chinese (that might work). The Cubans (Nah, don't think so).
That's the one problem with remaking that, even though I wouldn't consider China NOT to be a threat, I kind of doubt they are ever working up to invade us and take us over.
Of course I could be wrong.
You're right, of course. "The Honeymooner" without Cedric the Entertainer or Mike Epps just wouldn't be the same.
You're right, of course. "The Honeymooners" without Cedric the Entertainer or Mike Epps just wouldn't be the same.
The word is that Stevie will use Tom Hanks in the role of Dowd. They'll probably have a CGI rabbit.
I can't wait till Spielberg turns Saving Private Ryan into a musical staring Hugh Jackman (as Sgt. Horvath) with a special guest appearance by Rosie O'Donnell as the kind-hearted beer wench.
Captain Blood in space? Didn't they already make that and call it Star Wars?
A true Red Dawn remake would be awesome. The invaders would be China's army, currently the largest in the world – and they ARE well-equiped and well-trained. They would invade with an "international force" including Euros, under the guise of restoring order after a limited nuclear engagement where Washington DC was destroyed. Done right with high production values and a bit of daring, it would work nicely.
But of course Hollywood wob't do that. It would be "offensive" and "racist." The invaders (we all know this) will be white, Christian "religious right-wing extremists" with a side of white supremism. They will be wearing crucifixes, going after minorities, and displaying pictures of Reagan and G W Bush. And the new-style iPod-wearing Wolverines will outsmart them. We knew that, right?
Other than Harvey, the rest could be totally fine. And we know Spielberg is going to somehow make an anti-American Harvey…but as long as they don't have the Wolverines fighting Republicans Red Dawn is a film I'd really like to see again.
Hanks would be able to pull it off.
No need for a remake, however. And a CGI rabbit would be silly.
Well, I loved the Rockford Files but as almost everyone has said before me how could it be the Rockford Files without James Garner? Who could replace him?
Nobody that I know of.
Can anyone mention a remake tghat was as good as or better than the original? Very few.
Can anyone mention a remake that was as good as or better than the original? Very few.

I would have voted for The Karate Kid, which Will Smith wants to remake as a vehicle for his son Jaden. I can smell the new political subtext from here, can't you?
On the other hand, I'm truly curious about how they will redo Red Dawn, which is an old favourite of mine.
Absolutely! But that´s also the reason why I´m not troubled by a new Rockford files – without Garner it is just another generic show that happens to have the same name. But when it comes to Harvey or Red Dawn, they have ideas and stories to ruin.
we said 'Red Dawn' as well…
However we will respectfully disagree with Mr Ken in Irvine's take. John Milius' classic tale of young patriots repelling a Soviet invasion is so good, so lasting that you have the High Command in Iraq naming the capture of Saddaam Hussein 'Operation Red Dawn'- 'Task Force Wolverine'…
THAT's how much the film means to some. Any remake would have to be just as dyed in the wool conservative or suffer the worst of fates- hated by both sides…
Please don't destroy Red Dawn, Hollywood has raped most everything else that was good from my childhood other than The Goonies (I will kill you if you try it, really I will) and I know they will just turn it into some BS PC crap and most likely make the Communists the good guys this time.
Now, a iGunsmoke reboot! Whose gonna play Marshal Matt Dillion — Sasha Cohen?
I voted for Harvey. I can't believe that, of all the scripts and pitches that Spielberg gets, the one that most appeals to him is a (completely unnecessary) remake of the Jimmy Stewart classic.
Tom Hanks would probably be okay as Elwood Dowd, although probably only just okay. (Frankly, unless he needs the money, I don't see why he'd do it, but what do I know?) What will kill any remake, though, is that there will be some lame CGI rabbit. Spielberg won't be able to resist a CGI-Harvey, and I can only imagine that the end result will be something like Jar Jar Binks with fur.
Oh Yes! All of the above since how can you pick from that selection. Each is painful in its own way. The first three all have magical, golden casting. Red Dawn is a product of its time and a unique director.
Oh, I don't know – if one remade the story about how an old manniquin from a defunct Woolworth's store in Baltimore entered politics, became Speaker of the House, and pushed through national health care, one might have a hit. Or maybe not.
I know I can smell something from here but it doesn't smell like an Emmy!
…no – I see Rosie being cast as Martin Bormann (same build, same haircut).
Yeah and as usual Stevie will have some little kid spew forth a profanity or three so he'll get a PG rating and I'll have to be ready to clamp my hands over my daughters ears.
"Red Dawn is a product of its time"
I think especially because of that that Red Dawn can't really be remade, unless BO brings UN troops to US soil to fortify his new monarchy or something like that.
they even included him in the Maverick remake, if not in the title role but in one closely tied to it.
Being the sci fi/pirate/B movie fan and filmaker that I am, there's something to be said for Space Pirates, so I might be willing to go for Captain Blood in Space.
I remember when 'Red Dawn' came out. The critics HATED it, but it was in the theatre for weeks, if not months. I had gotten out of the service myself a few years before.
I would NOT want to see a remake, given the makeup of Hollywierd now. All of us in the insurance company sponsored, right wing mobs, will be the villains, as the heroic Obamamaniacs in their brown shirts will be the heroes.
OK, I misspelled weird.
I'd like to see a remake of Red Dawn with Taliban/Islamic supremacists instead of Soviets. Of course Hollywood is too politically correct to do that.
