The subtext is none too subtle: Critics are likely to roast the film, and fanboys of the original toy line and comic book may be indifferent, but if you’re a flag-waving, Nascar-loving American, it’s practically your patriotic duty to see this movie.
Message to Europe:
When it comes to selling “G.I. Joe” outside the U.S., the message is “this is not a George Bush movie — it’s an Obama world,” director Stephen Sommers said. “Right from the writing stage we said to ourselves, this can’t be about beefy guys on steroids who all met each other in the Vietnam War, but an elite organization that’s made up of the best of the best from around the world.”

I'm confused – is this another wimpy, "embarrassed to be an American" chunk of left wing crap? Or is it an honest to god, pro-American action movie? Anyone know?
I was a big fan of the cartoon (and I'm disappointed that Season 2, Part 2 was never released on DVD) but I'm not going to rush out to see this until I see some reviews. I still haven't seen Superman Returns.
So WHO is getting sucker-punched exactly?? The pro-military, pro-American crowd? Or the Obamatons?
My childhood just might be crushed by this movie. I LOVED GI Joe growing up, and everything about this really worries me. Nevermind that Stephen Sommers is pretty much a hack. What's wrong with just making a pro military movie? Oh wait…

Is team G.I. Joe apologizing to COBRA for the aggressive defense of American interests? It seems like the marketing message is tailored to different audiences, which is something Obama does, so yeah, I guess the Joes are running on Hope and Change.
It remakes GI Joe is a UN style organization. Yet they don't wear blue hats and rape the native children. But probably still blame America for all the world's ills. It is Hollywood telling us "we know how to play these mindless boobs in fly over country so they will buy tickets to this piece of crap". I suggest we show them otherwise.

I detect buzz code – embarassed to be an american. let's see: the reason there is a free world at all is because of the US. Lots of military cemetaries overseas, lots. I think I will see the reviews. Give it a fair chance, but if it is one of these NY – LA anti US films, forget it. The big dough in film is G rated cartoons, which the nascar fans take their kids to – all the way to the bank for hollywood. Lions for lambs, etc. all losers. But politically corect. How can you make a politically correct GI Joe which is inherently pro US? These days, Wallace and Grommet would be political. Wait and see what the word of mouth is.

Given that it's been a fight from the very beginning to keep the show's "a real American hero" theme I think I'm going to skip this one. I might watch it when it comes on broadcast or basic cable but until then I'm keeping my money in my pocket.
It's a garbage movie by people who do not understand or care about the military, American policy, or GI Joe. I hope it bombs so completely that they completely reboot the franchise within three years, and consign this pathetic attempt to raise ticket sales overseas to oblivion.

So much of what I've read about this movie has depressed me beyond the ability to even express myself. The G.I. Joe guys were ALL easily recognized by their outfits… so, hey, why not stick them all into identical black robo-suits (ROBO-SUITS?!). And everyone knows Cobra Commander was a crazy guy who lost his brother in the Vietnam war… so why is Tommy Solomon from "3rd Rock from the Sun" playing him?
The ONLY possible good thing about this movie: Chris Eccleston as Destro (but where is his mask)? Someone PLEASE create Serpentor already and have him and Dr. Mindbender rid us of this new "international hero" plague.

I lived GI Joe growing up in the early 80's and can still rattle off more names of figures, vehicles, etc. than I care to admit. I credit the toys with helping to instill the desire in me to be a soldier. Its a complete bummer that Hollywood saw fit to piss all over everything that made the toys great.

Take less sugar in your morning coffee and grow up. We have a right to worry about the direction any movie goes. Especially one that deals with the military. You just can't leave the political stuff out of a movie when "it's an Obama world" is being said by the director.
Don't see this flick if you grew up watching the cartoon. Read a book about Audie Murphy instead. Hollywood; please make one movie that shows the self-sacrifice, patriotism, and the need for American ideals to survive in a world that needs more liberty – not less. Obama is the definition of a fad based on a manufactured villain; he will not survive for long; don't hitch your wagon to a sinking ship.

It may be a NATO team. All I know is that the Pit in the comics started out on Staten Island and moved out to Nevada or somewhere in the desert, but it's in Belgium in the movie. That was long rumored, but I looked through the novelization and that's the final location. If they had based it on the Hama comics, it could have been something worth seeing. As it stands, it looks really bad.
Right now, Hama's writing a stupid "Obama as a barbarian, fighting Ann Coulter and Sarah Palin" comic. He boasts of manning the phone banks to get him elected. Bah.

The ONLY thing 'GI Joe' about this film is the title. I just saw the (very confusing) trailer and except for a brief shot of Dennis Quaid in an American uniform, there was NOTHING of GI Joe within sight. Everyone looked as if they were extras borrowed from the Matrix set. Damn – if they're going to lie about the title, they're no good. I am so NOT watching this film.
I read the script and the novelization, and I can tell you that there's nothing offensive in this picture at all.
Sure, I too am bothered by the Pit moving to Egypt, and a couple of the characters changing origins, but the group is still run by an American General, and the film's two main characters, Duke and Ripcord, are American soldiers.
There's no mention of how the group got started in the film, but it's obviously an American organization. There's even a reference to G.I. Joe's roots in WWII.
It's not nearly as patriotic as the Transformers films, but not really insulting either.

So true, I was hoping they would at least keep 50% of the history and flavor of the original cartoon and comic book series. When they hired Marlon Wayons I knew it was going to be crap. Add in that the Baroness doesn't even have an accent but a valley girl twang and it says bad writing and worse direction. The only reason I would go to see it would be to see Ray Parks.

I also object vehemently the assumption that, as a fly-over country conservative, if I see it (which I certainly will), and like it (which is a distinct possibility) I must have been duped, and stupid enough to not notice any propaganda.

Well, "hate" is probably a little too strong a word. I actually will go see it as an "action genre" flick, without too much concern for the political subtext. I really like Stephen Sommers as an action film director based on his work with the "Mummy" franchise.

I have an British friend who's pretty happy about a Brit being in the story. They have spilled a lot of blood with us in wars all over the globe. The group in the Transformers sequel was a multi-national force, and no one seemed to mind it.
And, again … the film DOES recognize that G.I. Joe started as an American unit.

I have not seen the movie, but I did work on the movie's video game (which is going to be released tomorrow).
It is just a dumb summer action film that is all about special effects and blowing stuff up. There won't be any messages or themes. No one is going to be offended by it. All that stuff the director said was for marketing purposes only. The reason he can say one thing to "rednecks" and another to Euros is because the film does not take any sides.
There are plenty of Hollywood movies to worry about. This is not one of them.
