I love this movie. I see it whenever it comes on.
Those were the Hollywood days
Absolutely fabulous movie.. great cast and even better story line….

The great William Powell retired too soon.
Well, Hmmmm. Why should I pay for 46 million people? A good portion of them illegal aliens.
Why is it, socialists seem to think that it is okay to take from those who have worked hard all their lives for their money and give it to people who don't?
Last I heard, compassion is supposed to be retail, not wholesale.
Call, write and email your Representatives daily to stop this health care monstrosity.
Too funny, I just gave a copy of this movie to my father for his birthday, today.
IN the 90's I was an officer in the navy in the west pacific. I was also in charge of the movies shown on CCTV on the ship. Among sailors who stereotypically you'd think would want sleaze or B-grade violence in their movies, I found it interesting that this movie was one of the most requested to play.
Probably because it was a realistic portrayal of shipboard life that still exists in some corners today. We actually had an Ensign Pulver type on the ship. He knew exactly how to avoid being in the same room with the Captain at any time, day or night.
Great movie.
Thanks guys, and yeah I have been writing to Prez and to my rep's and WOW.. nothing has happened…LOL..
(PARAPHRASE) "I realize that during bad economic times they gotta scrape the bottom of the barrel; but where'd they ever scrape you up from?"
Time to throw Obama's fruit plant overboard….but Biden can't swim.

That is a great poll, and to think that 55.7% of the people in this GREAT country thinks we are headed in the wrong direction
Now, all that has to happen is that the current direction of the country be tied tightly to Obama and his minions.
we should give a particular shout out to Tennessee Blue Dogs Lincoln Davis and Jim Cooper. They are closer to me politically than the New England R.I.N.O.'s.
Wow, Congress sucks.
Agreed.
I just read the featured article in The Guardian about Hollywood's attitudes towards women. Interesting read no matter where you stand. Personally I think it's a mistake to take Lars von Trier's motives seriously. He's a provocateur. A Danish prankster. He wants people to label him a misogynist in the press and call for a ban of his movies. It's also a mistake to consider him a Hollywood filmmaker when he's never even set foot in this country but that's another story.
As for The Proposal, I think it has less to do with sexism and more to do with Hollywood's inability to create believable, three-dimensional characters. Feasibly you could take any female characters and put a sexist spin on them. If you reversed the gender roles in The Proposal, you could write an editorial about her character being too nice. But it's an interesting read with points worth considering.
Another scary article…
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,534983,00.htm...
Yeah, that would be great if we can strap all of the BAD NEWS AND BAD NUMBERS to them… and get a 2010 sweep!!!! then again in 2012…..
Because socialists have no intention of paying it themselves. Just look at the tax records for a good chunk of the cabinet and administration posts.
Wonderful movie!
A fantastic film! A fantastic cast! …And made during a time when the concepts of duty, courage, and honor were things to be celebrated.
Hmmm… maybe it's time to pop it in the ol' DVD player again.
Could you supply the link?
Scary, yes. I bet the info gathered on these guys came from the hated wiretaps of GWB.
"WOW.. nothing has happened…LOL.. "
Yes it has
You and your family have been put on the list of radical racist that will get the red pill instead of the treatment for what ails you

I wonder if Obama does have a hidden channel to Chavez.
Kit, you know the LIBERALS will not allow that to happen… they would have him pay his debt to society and then he will be released on a technicality…..
True, while letting them out to visit relatives on the weekends. Idiots anyway. They are what's wrong with this country.
obama doesn't want to condemn this tyrant because he's hoping to do the same thing.
The LIB's have no problem allowing this to happen, I agree that they are the problem in the US.. the thing that is really bad though.. IMHO ARE THE LAWYERS that defend these asshats
It is funny, that he did vote already for him though…… I gather that ONE BY ONE most americans will realize how PROGRESSIVE he is and start saying the same thing….
Ues to love watching this movie with my dad – one of his, and my, all time faves. What's not to love about early Jack Lemon and the great Henry Fonda. Incomparable film from a better time.
Used to love watching this movie with my dad – one of his, and my, all time faves. What's not to love about early Jack Lemon and the great Henry Fonda. Incomparable film from a better time.
'Mister Roberts' is one of my all time favorite movies. A great story with all those wonderful actors. Fonda going toe to toe with Cagney, is just the best. William Powell as the stable force of reason and Jack Lemmon, who won the Academy Award for best supporting actor, make it a movie for the ages. That's entertainment!
The end of the movie, when Lemmon pounds on the captain's door and comes barging in announcing to Cagney, "Captain it is I, Ensign Pulver and I just threw your stinkin' palm tree overboard…now what's all this crud about no movie tonight?" is priceless.
Look at that cast. Just look at that cast. The more I think about it, the more amazing it is.
Is it true that this movie "made" Jack Lemmon.
"Stay out of B-29s, Frank, my boy."
Awesome, awesome movie.
No question, it was a helluva start to a great career, which had him working a lot in early TV prior to movies. Winning the Oscar right out of the box, I'm sure counted for something. He was such a wonderful actor, one of the few who could do comedy as well as drama. I miss him.
Great movie, although I believe Henry Fonda always maintained that it was not anywhere as good as the stage version.
Caught the video earlier this morning as Drudge has it posted right at the top. Important statements from the fellow officers, in support, of Sgt. Crowley. A lot of respect and love shown for the man.
I don't know how the president is going to fully recover from this. He can 'walk it back' all he wants, all I can think about is his associations with men such as Gates and Wright. Not good.
But would you piss on him if he wasn't on fire and in range?
Some more good reading for you folks…
HEALTHCARE MADNESS!!!!!!!!!!!

Hank, that is O' so true…. he could burn as a effigy in my opinion…. what a asshat that man is!!!
Whenever I see him or Jason Robards I always regret they're not with us & still working.

Orange Juice – High, medium, no pulp – you decide!
I prefer the high pulp. Havn't determined why some folks don't like the pulp.
The "Simply Orange" brand has all 3 varities, IIRC. I buy the HIGH!
"How High the Pulp"! Yeah, man!
"Somewhere there's high pulp, I'll drink it down
Somewhere there's low pulp, that's for a clown
There is no juice with pulp that is too pulpy for me
Hope you'll agree.
If not, there's more for me and me….."
If by piss you mean drop a piano, then yes….yes I would….
But with pissing, he would have to live with the shame of being pissed on.
How that complete waste of a human being continues to draw a paycheck is beyond me. And CNN in general and Wolf (Wolf?? Really?? Who the hell names their kid Wolf???) Blitzer specifically have got to be kidding with using Bill Maher's opinion on anything. They might as well have used Whitey the Birdman that stands naked on the corner and flips people off….
If that a-hole didn't feel any shame for calling the 9/11 hijackers heroes, then I doubt urine would make a dent.
A 700lb piano from a 10 story window on the other hand…….
I see your point, but with a piano, your timing would have to be exact, while pissing doesn't need to be as exact.
"The Order of the Palm." This is a true favorite. IMO, Cagney's caracature is optimized and one of his best roles.
I heard a good point today. Most of us here are very unhappy at the state of the state. Right now, the administration is cruising along, swiping at the naysayers and passing extraordinary amount of change, Praytell, what will happen if he tanks. How will the henchmen respond, and how guerrilla could it be? Frightening thoughts.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/filmblog/2009/jul/...
It was originally in the Now Playing section at the top.
We'll have to practice on him to make sure….
I started a film club (Cinema Domingo) for me and my girlfriends (because even if the movie sucked at least we would only be wasting a few hours instead of days on the latest Jodi Picolet dreck). We're having a Sadie Hawkins night and inviting the husbands in August. I'll be showing this movie because…JImmy Cagney! What's not to love?
Sounds good to me. An experiment. Maybe we can get some of the Stimulus bill to pay for it.
L.B., You are quite a character.
oooooooh……….I like where your head's at!!
Cool idea.
Sadie Hawkins night and you're not showing 'Lil' Abner'? I'm sure the guys will enjoy 'Mister Roberts'.
Have fun!
On Sadie Hawkins night we try our darndest to go "Paul Newman's Abs"-free. And I couldn't find the nerve to show a musical to the fellas.
So, Mister Roberts it is.
One other little bit about 'Mister Roberts' is that it was co-directed by John Ford and Mervyn LeRoy. You can barely read it on the poster. Not sure how many people associate this movie with John Ford.
Jack Lemmon used to tell a great story of how he was discovered by Ford while walking on the backlot of I believe was Warners. Ultimately Ford cast him as Pulver. I need to try and find that story somewhere, unless one of you can help me out with it?

I see that Debbie Schlussel continues to spew her venom at anyone whose appearance, habits, or mere existence offends her delicate sensibilities. (I very rarely read her, but when I saw the featured link, I just had to see what Her Highness had to say about overweight people. She ran true to form.) Why this site continues to link to her is beyond me.

Henry Fonda – liberal
James Stewart – conservative
Yet – pals for life.
Did the parties get wider apart or have people's concepts of 'friendship' and loyalty?
I hadn't heard that story about Jack Lemmon, but my understanding is that John Ford (who was a bully) had a violent disagreement on the set with Henry Fonda (who had played the title character in the stage version). The argument ended with Ford punching Fonda in the back and eventually leaving the film. Mervyn LeRoy took over directing after that, and some of the scenes he directed were later re-shot by someone else. I don't recall the name offhand, but it was left off the credits because the studio felt it would have been ridiculous to list 3 directors.
A word of warning to Mr. Maher: Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers.
I'm sure he doesn't, ever see his audience??
Gina, you beat me to the punch……… What a punch of malarkey…she is a GUTTER SNIP!!!!

Ya – lots of TV.
He does have IT SHOULD HAPPEN TO YOU in 1954 – the year before MR. ROBERTS. Great film for NYC and comedy lovers.
Whoa – feature film in 1947 with Jane Wyman and Dennis Morgan (likely a WB picture) – "The Lady Takes a Sailor". Unbilled part as a plasterer.
A political truce between good friends is the best thing.
I usually do not discuss politics live with people, especially friends.
I have a pretty liberal friend who tries to start discussions up, but I ease away. I have known him since 1969 – 40 years and that friendship is more important to me than his polly-vues. He's a great guy.
I had a friend with extreme right wing views – more right wing than you can imagine. When he perceived my politics as somewhat conservative, he, over the course of a view discussions, revealed his political stance to me. He explained his POVs, I didn't agree, he saw I didn't agree and he rarely brought it up the rest of the time we knew each other. Intelligent man with an impossible POV.
Weird world.

Minor strippers in R.I.???
"Indoor prostitution" is legal???
What is "outdoor prostitution" in that case? Sex in the park for money?
It's like Thailand in the Colonies.
GOVERNMENT CENSORSHIP
Following from CNSNews.com this week:
Rep. John Carter (R-Texas) made public last week an e-mail from the Franking Commission — a bipartisan panel that oversees messages from lawmakers — asking him to change the phrase “government run” health care to "public option." . . .
"Change this on both scripts and send it back to me,” the e-mail concluded.
Thanks for this link.
And . . . remember the prez insisting on clinging to his precious blackberry?
You said what I wish I'd said.
Love James Cagney! "Yankee Doodle Dandy!"
Flame me, but Hank Fonda was never a favorite of mine. He seems too uptight, very surly, and was rather a jerk to his family. Anyone that produces a daughter like Jane can't be all good.
But Cagney. Ahhh, Cagney! Now there was a movie star! Tough guy…hoofer…100% true-blue, Irish-American gentleman…Cagney ranks only second to Duke with me. Watch Yankee Doodle Dandy and then watch White Heat. Let his talent bombard you.
William Powell…always a delight.
It always works with Looney Tunes.
Allll righttttttt…. who did it? WHO did it. You'll sit at your posts allll night till someone tells me whoooo did it.
wonderful movie… Oh and to the left… It wasnt Bush.

An outstanding movie!! I was 8 years old at the time and still remember the scene where he has the "fulminated mercury" and is going to blow-up the laundry room, and then does. "Fulminated mercury" will be on my lips when I die, really funny….
I should emphasize it was Ensign Pulver who had the "fulminated mercury".

I wouldn't piss on him if he were on fire…..
Several scenes were directed by actor Ward Bond. Ford was in poor health at the time and reportedly drinking more than was good even for him. He was not a big fan of the play (which Henry Fonda starred in on Broadway) and took more interest shooting the dazzling exteriors and and on-deck scenes. Most of the close-in and "stagey" scenes (like the one on the ship while Roberts is waiting for the crew to return from liberty) were, I believe, directed by LeRoy.
Open Thread Rant:
Today, a coworker of mine has learned that his wife will be without job by November. The reason, Dayton, OH based NCR is relocating to Atlanta, Georgia. NCR was offered incentives paid for by stimulus money to relocate and will not retain any local jobs as all payroll taxes must go to the state of Georgia as part of the relocation deal. So our tax money is being used to lure jobs from one state to another, I wonder if the 1200 or so jobs lost in Ohio and gained in Georgia will go in the "jobs created" or "jobs saved" category.
End of rant.
Oh, 'Mister Roberts' is indeed a fine film with an excellent cast showcasing the best Hollywood had to offer in the 1950's.
Mr. Roberts, one my all time favorites, what a cast.
There you go Stan, you and me back on the same page once again.
Cyber-Hi Five!
as an old geezer – I miss those days when liberals like Hank Fonda were patriots and stood up for America.
There wasn't any apologizing for America from those old liberals and they could get along with Duke Wayne and not spew hatred of conservatives
But, Mr. Fonda's daughter and her ilk, including punks like obama, sure put a stop to civility and love of America by hollywood liberals
THOSE WERE THE DAYS !!!!!!!
I THOUGHT AND HOPED THEY WOULD NEVER END !!!!!!!!!!!!
I think it is all ideology and money
can you imagine babs streisand giving the oscar to Duke Wayne in this day and age
its pitiful
I was aware of the Fonda and Stewart row/fight about politics and their truce and this sure would not be allowed by a fonda type liberal today.
I know that I avoid the old liberals from my earlier days – their flaming idiocy is just to much to listen to or put with.
I got fed up with the over the top bush hatred/obama worship and I cant get these folks to leave it alone when we are in company – so I have segregated myself from the nonsense of the LIBERAL VITRIOL AND HATE
These thing happen! LOL!
Perhaps a highlights of " real men can dance?" BH has a clip of Cagney reprising the role of GM Cohan in
the Seven Little Foys" with Bob Hope—both men are in their fifties, and Cagney suffering from crippling arthitis (sp) but their dance together on a table top is incredible! Even my husband was impressed, and he dislikes most movies in general (which is why I am glad I have BH, as a movie fan with no one at home to share classic cinema with). It's on You Tube—-you might be surprised.
Dittos, Gina.
While I have little sympathy for overweight people who whine about not being able to lose pounds while stuffing their mouths with Oreos, Debcakes comes across as the high school headcheerleader who is also
Vice-President of the Student Council, Chairman of the Key Club, and voted Most Popular Girl in her class. Did I mention she is dating the quarterback of the football team? She and her coterie of social butterflies are cruel and confident in their adolescent attractiveness because they firmly believe everyone else in the student body is miserable since they are not members of their restricted Golden Circle. The unpretty cannot possiby lead productive and happy lives as Ms. Schlussel and her ilk. Love is not for the young and cute in Debbie's particular reality.
And yet…and yet…your insecurity is showing, Debbie Dear. Your childish jealousy of an accomplished woman like Mrs. Palin is a dead giveaway, as is the sultry pinup that adorns your columns. C'mon, Deb, we know that pic was taken at least 10 years ago. Who is fooling who?
Good Lord, if that's true, I was born too young.
This movie is one of my all-time favorites. I now want to kill to see the original stage version.
BTW, the sequel – "Mister Pulver" – made some 11 years or so later, was TERRIBLE. I mean, they replaced Cagney with Burl Ives! And Pulver was played by the kid who later played "Charlie X" in the Star Trek episode of the same name.
