Conservatives often talk about what they don’t like about Hollywood. That’s okay, but it’s not productive. Maybe it’s time we talked about what we do like? More to the point, let’s point out when Hollywood has gotten it right. And that brings me to the...

Hepburn and Tracy – classic!
Enter text right Here is a link to a nice website called Real Clear Politics and good article at same: /www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2009/07/24/why_obama_isnt_governing_from_the_center_97591.html
I must beat this dead horse….I keep reading the pundits saying that the cop should have "known better" or done this or that in the Gates kerfuffle. Quite simply put, the man did his job and Gates was a total imbecile. He should have been arrested and The One should have not commented. It's hard enough being a cop, and tyou don't need the POTUS calling you stupid. Gates needs to apologize and so does Obama.
I hate to say this, but I am afraid you better not hold your breath. Good news, though over on Drudge. "You Know Who's" approval just di[pped below 50%. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!! Maybe we can get him below Bush's record.
Love Tracy/Hepburn. Liked Desk Set.
With this incident regarding the Cambridge police and Gates, and the lame backtracking in progress by the White House to extract themselves from a statement that Obama should never have uttered in the first place, Obama has unquestionably, irrevocably and permanently secured for himself the position of absolutely the the most ill-equipped, inexperienced, arrogant and racist POTUS this country has ever had the misfortune to elect.
The #2 'honor' of worst president is now tied by Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton.
Where is Harry Truman when we need him??
RCP is one of my 6 must read sites every day
why didn' this professor know his neighbors? They didn't even recognize him by sight.
seems he keeps to him self and has little interaction with the people he chose to locate himself with.
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2009/07...
Is this the one you are talking about?
Yeah Buckwheat, that and American Thinker were the two I concentrated on before getting into this on-line commenting addiction. American Thinker is more conservative, but RCP has a lot of really great pieces
I remember seeing this years ago. Very funny!
It is and it's a great site.
anybody who doesn't get Obama by now must really be a "true believer."
I don't think Clinton was quite as bad as Carter. He was a big old horn dog, but he so needed to be loved, once Republicans got Congress, he didn't do nearly as much damage domestically. When it comes to pure, flat out incompetence, it is hard to beat "Jimmah" but "O" seems to be more than filling his shoes.
I asked myself the same thing, why didn’t his neighbors know who he was?
Maybe they did know and wanted to see him squirm. He is a jacka$$.
Heck.. is there anyone in the press corps now that ISN'T a plant? (Or at least has an IQ higher than a houseplant? *da-da-dum*.)
You make valid points, Clinton vs. Carter.
As for Obama filling Carter's shoes, Obama has achieved this 'distinction' only 6 months into his term.
If there is a God he will be at least neutered in 2010.

Talking to a friend of mine who's utterly depressed about the state of the world, and admits to having given up any hope for the future. I asked him why and he said that he's been banned from two online forums in the same day for attempting to talk about things that matter, rather than how many inches he has (if you know what I mean) or what his favorite color is or whether he mourned the death of Michael Jackson.
Everybody only wants to know Whats anymore, not Whys. If you starting bringing Whys into it, not only do people not want to talk to you, they don't want you to talk to them. As he puts it, "they're like the proles in 1984, only worse. The media and the government are both lying to their faces, and the only thing these horny, apathetic sheep want to talk about is penis size — which I'm sure Big Brother is happy about.
"They don't even know why they obsess over these things, and they've never thought about it. Nobody is willing to ask himself a question that isn't utterly shallow. Sometimes they don't even want to know why you like your favorite color… just give us a color we can recognize, then shut the hell up and pass the mike.
"F__k the future. We don't have one. This next generation is going to be the downfall of not only Western Civilization, but the entire human race."
Neutered is such a strong derogatory term. How about blocked? As in male chicken blocked? Cause you know he wants to buck us.
Good news, though over on Drudge. "You Know Who's" approval just dipped below 50%.
Not where it really matters.
The Fudge Nitwit showed us the mindset of himself and his constituency, racism underlies everything. Barrack Obama, like Henry Gates, like Sonja Sotomayor, is a person with a low IQ who is not qualified to be doing what he is doing, but because of Ivy League affirmative-action policies, these lesser lights are thrust into positions of power. When they behave at their intelligence quotient, it is simply a reflecdtion on why affirmative-action is a bad policy.

They'd BETTER approve that last comment. What did I say that was so offensive?
If you comment too much, the Admin. Nazi gets you.
I thought Obama's idea of change was to 'buck us up', as well buck us.
In line with Obama's bucking, I have changed 'WTF' to 'WTB'.
I try to be a team player, but staying bucked up is bucking difficult at times.
One of my most pity never appeared from yesterday, Jake. I savor just guessing what yours was…ha-ha
I didn't even say anything offensive. Just mentioning a conversation with a friend of mine who's absolutely convinced that the Myspace Generation is going to be the downfall not only of Western Civ but of the entire human race. He got banned from two online forums in one day for wanting to talk about current affairs other than the death of Michael Jackson, or about questions even the least bit deeper than what his favorite color is. I believe he made comparisons to the proles in 1984.
I like Spencer Tracy, and I like Katharine Hepburn. There's nothing wrong with the acting or script, but this movie has just never clicked for me, except for the scene with Spencer Tracy and the licorice gun.
I agree. There are not enough people saying "Gates was being a complete JERK and should be THANKING his neighbor and the cops for watching out for his stuff". THAT is what good neighbors do; THAT is America. Neighborliness. But Noooooooooo…. Gates sees evrything through RACISM. He breathes it, he eats it, he teaches it, he lives it. (That's probably why his neighbors didn't know him- because Gates is just a hateful person. Or maybe he's too busy for neighbors.)
Gates was wrong here. Normal people don't act like that. Gates didn't get the message that we're "post-racial" now. He is of the same group that must keep racism festering to support their ideology, to keep them relevant and employed.
Write to president@harvard.edu to complain about him.
I dunno.. the more the stories are coming out, it sounds like ALL of the neighbors are doing that, Tread… (there was a quicky story on HotAir saying that.).
Were I a burglar, I would be planning my next job at Gates' house right about now. There's no way any police will be responding to a break-in call to THAT address any time soon!
Buck-buck-buck-BARACK!
Funny. I have just been thinking of watching a Spencer/Hepburn film today: "State of the Union". Love this pairing.
I agree. Jimmy's in a class by himself.
And at least Slick Willie was entertaining. I can't remember exactly what he said, but Dole zinged him good in one of '96 debates, and Clinton responded by biting his lip, fighting back fake tears, and saying, "…a partisan attack has never fed a starving child." He had me on the floor.
I'm trying to be very fair in judging O against Carter. He's not there yet, but when the "fertilizer" (and it's already all over the place) hits the ventilation system, Carter will drop into 2nd place on the list of all-time worst presidents.
My user name is Jake_Was_Here. I'm going to type this in all caps so you people in the Administrative booth can read it.
I HAVE HAD THREE (OR MORE) OF MY COMMENTS IN ONE HOUR DELETED OR MOVED TO MODERATION. IN THESE COMMENTS, I HAVE SAID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, I REPEAT, _NOTHING_ THAT ANY OF THIS SITE'S READERS WOULD FIND OFFENSIVE. I WANT TO KNOW THE _PRECISE_ REASONS WHY THE ADMINS FELT IT WAS NECESSARY TO REMOVE THESE COMMENTS.
IN FACT, I THINK THAT ANYONE WHO HAS HAD A COMMENT REMOVED FOR ANY REASON SHOULD RECEIVE AN EXPLANATION, SO THAT WE CAN AVOID BREAKING THE RULES AGAIN. I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT RULES _I_ BROKE, AND UNTIL SOMEONE IN A POSITION OF AUTHORITY _TELLS_ ME WHAT RULES I VIOLATED, I WON'T BE ABLE TO POST MY MESSAGES IN A WAY THAT DOES NOT VIOLATE THEM. IN FACT, IF THIS HAPPENS A FEW MORE TIMES I MAY STOP READING AND POSTING ON THIS SITE ALTOGETHER. WAY TO GO.
Is that what it is? If you post too many comments??
From my experience, yes. At most it lasts an hour.
Calm down Jake, All of us have had the misfortune of having a comment or two misplaced.
You know, as distasteful as Gates appears – and his ranting and raving on the MSM over the last few days does a pretty good job of proving that – once Gates established the fact that he owned the home, the officer should have left. No more questions, no more demands, no nothing.
Again, don't get me wrong, Gates appears to be a grade "A" asshole. But in America, it's not against the law to be an asshole, especially on your own property.
Personally I dread the day when a police officer can arrest simply because he doesn't like your attitude.
They are true believers. I simply can't understand how anyone can look at the long, bloody history of statism, and think "Ya' know, this will work if we just have the right person ruling all our lives."
When my teenage daughter was young, she absolutely adored Disney movies. We'd watch them over and over and over. And when the happy couple road off into the sun set, with every one in the kingdom living happily ever after, and the credits started rolling, I was make a point to always ask her "Sure, every one is happy now, but what happens when their grandson is king and he's a total idiot, complete meanie? How happy will every one be then?"
Ed.. maybe I'm missing something, but isn't the story that the cops were leaving when he went on the public tirade outside of the house in view of the public? At that point, if Gates had shut up and let the cops go, none of this would have happened… but he had to push it (from what I gather) and he went over the line.
They already can do that. Technically, when a cop stops you while driving, in your home during an investigation of a possible break-in, or even on the street, HE IS ARRESTING YOU. He doesn't have to say you are under arrest. If you fail to cooperate, he has the rule of law behind him to formally arrest you.
And if you read the report, the cop was trying to extricate himself from the Gates' home and lead it outside so that he could leave. Gates should have been happy at that point, but………..he kept up the "attitude" and the comments. He was warned repeatedly to stop the "disorderly conduct". Gates didn't. He got arrested.
a little reason is needed here…
It occurs to us tha the site admin people have a responsibility to keep the site clean, not mean, and to keep the threads as linear as possible. We all have had brilliant moments go into moderation, and in retrospect it was usually for those reasons.
This is not a chat room, it is a debate site- and it is THEIR property and responsibility. So, cut 'em a huss and chill a bit.

Some online forums (the Home Theater Forum for example) explicitly forbid any kind of religious or political talk. In your friend's case, I'll assume he was banned because they didn't like what he was saying. That sucks, dude.
You know, I agree with you. I used to think it was just a technical glitch, but there does seem to be a correlation. It may even be some kind of program logic that kicks in when there a lot of people trying to post at the same time. In order to keep somebody from monoplolizing, they "kick you" to the back of the que for awhile.
Jake – try a different thread and see if that works.

Believe me, I understand. And I just love watching some asswipe getting what they deserve. But this is America. We have the right to be asswipes.
He was arrested on his property. There's a pic floating around of him on his porch in hand cuffs.
Let me put it this way. The left is trying desperately to come up with a way to silence Rush Limbaugh. If they do, it'll be enough for me to go dig up my tri-corner hat and grab my pitchfork. (I don't have a flintlock, and don't like guns much). They want to shut him up because they don't agree with what he says.
As detestable as Gates is, freedom of speech is freedom of speech. The left deplores free speech. On the right we defend it. Which means, even if we don't agree with it.
That being said, now that the situation is over, feel free to let the free speech against that asswipe commence.
Judy Holliday is the best thing about this preachy film. She's so undervalued these days. What a treasure
That frigging song that either Ewell or Wayne keeps singing! Jesus! That guy was supposed to be charming?
I like Tracy in most of his films, Hepburn in some of hers. Neither in this one.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!
I agree Joe. That's the problem. According to the Constitution, they are not allowed to do that.
Nice, meek, mild, people don't need protection from the law. Loud, lunatic assholes do.
For me it's a property rights case. I have no problem with the police responding to a possible break in. I have no problem with the police verifying his identity. At that point, it becomes obvious, he's the property owner, which means the situation is over. The police should have no more involvement. It's over.
And so far I have seen nothing to indicate the police officer had any racial motive. Seems to me he was just tired of this asshole yelling at him. That's the problem. The police should not have the authority to silence some one.
That being said, I'm all for dragging Gates through the mud in the arena of free ideas. Let's have at it. But leave the police out of it.
With "Date" comment sorting, main comment #8 had blocked words "banned" and "penis" while #9 had only "banned." Where are the other ones you had problems with?

"Adam's Rib" is not in the first tier of Tracy/Hepburn vehicles like "Woman of the Year" and "Pat and Mike." Hepburn always walked a fine line between being endearingly sassy and simply being grating. She has more than her share of grating moments in this film. The best things about "Adam's Rib" are the superb supporting bits by David Wayne, Judy Holliday, Tom Ewell and the always wonderful Jean Hagen. (The courtroom cross-examination of the characters played by Ewell and Hagen is hilarious.) Despite these caveats "Adam's Rib" still has ten times the wit, intelligence and class of any of the current crop of "romantic comedies."
I'm always referring friends to RCP. The best writing of those on the right and the left. Best of the Blogs is always good to check out, too. I've discovered some sites there I probably wouldn't have found otherwise.
"Let me tell you something. I'm from Chicago. I don't break." — President Barack Obama, at a Democratic fundraiser in Chicago, responding to suggestions from some in the GOP that health care reform could "break" his presidency

/this guy is effin nuts
Almost like he was channeling Jeremiah Wright……
It is a nice quiet neighborhood, and some nutjob is on his porch screaming about racists. He is not even trying to have dialogue, make coherent points, he is just throwing insults at decent people.
Yeah, that qualifies for a time out.
LOVE Adam's Rib. Hepburn so unconsciously gives away the inherent arrogance of feminist positions only to have it turned back on her at the end. It can be a very frustrating movie if you don't already know the ending – still can't get anyone to watch it with me
But I love this one.
This is a good one. I also enjoy it because it's the first role the wonderful character actor, Marvin Kaplan, appeared in. I see him from time to time at the local health food store having lunch and always address him as Mr. Kaplan. A great actor and a very nice man who has worked with many of the Hollywood legends.
It is not the browser, it is the POS Intense Debate system which has stupid automatic filtering and looses track of comment and threads. If you ever get "must be approved," or "in moderation" if you tried to Edit a comment, the filter grabbed it. Delete the comment while that message is still there (it will "disappear" if your refresh) and find the word the filter does not like.
I agree. The guy seems like a major league creep. But if you can't be a major league creep on your own property, where can you?
I firmly believe in the supremacy of the individual over the state. And the foundation for all of that is property rights.
Believe me, this leaves a very bad taste in my mouth too. But sometimes doing what's right does that.
That's the problem with the left. If it might leave a bad taste in their mouths, they refuse to do it, no matter how right it is.
Yeah he doesn't break, he just breaks economies….
Don't that just dill your pickle?
I never had that problem, yet. But the stupid automatic filtering catches words within words, some rather common ones, so at some point people will naturally use a perfectly valid word and get blocked. You cannot talk about analyzing something you came across. there are two blocked words right there. Jake just used "banned" in three posts and had three that had to be approved.
Yup, it is frustrating and stupid.
EdSki,
By very definition, dealing with police is different. Just like killing a policeman will get you the death penalty. They are sworn to protect all of us and they have to make judgment calls. You can disagree with the way you were treated and appeal to a judge. If our society does not honor police in a special way we will quickly descend into anarchy. There is no Santa or Officer Friendly for grown-ups.
Yeah yeah, neither did Capone…
Apparently the police decided a judge didn't need to mediate it, because they dropped charges.
An American citizen on their own property has a right to do what they please. Include being an asshole.
I believe in free speech and property rights for those I agree with. I would be a hypocrite if I didn't believe the same with people I disagree with. That's just the price I pay for holding moral standards. In this case, defending the racist Skip Gates.
Great movie.. one of those oldies that I have seen…..
I have to honestly say this flap over the cop's have my blood boiling.. srsly… what type of fool prefeaces something saying he DOES NOT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED and say they acted STUPIDLY….. what a jackass, honestly…
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,534687,00.htm...
I cannot wait until the audio tapes come out and we see that the cop's where acting rationally and the professor was the one out of his mind!!!!
"Property rights" aside, the noise ordinance in town here takes effect at 11PM, if I have my stereo blaring or doing loud construction work or anything that is "disturbing the peace" then I sure should know who I can expect a call from. Now, if this scholarly fellow has a problem with what happens when you violate "community standards" of civilized orderly conduct, then he can move. We do not have anarchy, we have laws. He has a right to say what he wants, but not in a way that makes it difficult to ignore him.
Perfect rant on what the MESSAIH has stepped in some POOOOOO….. I think that by tomorrow he will apologize to the police officers and say he had made a rash decision to say they acted stupidly….
be careful not to get yourself reported. My personal computer is blocked from posting on this site even if i am logged in. I have to do every thing from work.
I agree with noise ordinances too. I've spoken with my local police about the asshole kids next door. He says, no matter what the law says, it basically comes down to the office on the scene what constitutes disorderly conduct or too much noise.
But that's an extremely subjective standard. The police in the next town over went so far as to buy noise meters to take the subjectivness out of it.
But to me the bottom line is still, do I believe in my rights to my property. And if so, I must believe in other people's rights to their own property.
Once he showed proper ID, proving it was his residence, the office should have said "thank you, have a nice evening" and left. He was a cranky old, over the hill liberal, with a chip on his shoulder. Let his neighbors worry about it.
If a law abiding American citizen can not be secure in their own property, then we are already a police state.
Again, let me emphasize, in no way am I defending Gates. Not at all. Sounds like a total a-hole. But property rights are still property rights.
Ah, yes, friend of Pres. gets charges dropped. That sort of Tom foolery takes place even in my tiny town (friend of big wig.)
Yes, I was judging the situation as many Americans do across the land. What if it was just plain me? Yeah, we would have acted polite to the police (my husband and I) and if we got hauled off we would have to pat attorney fee.
I agree with the spirit of your indignation but not the idea that he should not have been picked up. If only because I was not there and can imagine all kinds of scenarios and police do have right to call it like they see it. I'm good with that.
Yeah and then it makes me laugh at myself!!!!
PS. especially when I also re-read old post above and misspelled "pithy"–maybe they could moderate all my posts that are not executed properly!
But the cop was trying to leave, it was Gates trying to provoke a confrontation…
Since you brought it up…I posted this link yesterday, to an interview Sgt. Crowley did on WEEI/Boston. Well worth the listen. After reading the police report and hearing the interview, I'm in support of Sgt. Crowley.
http://audio.weei.com/m/25432556/sgt-james-crowle...
Skip Gates is a black man with a chip on his shoulder. He's the problem. You're correct, it's Gates who needs to apologize to the officer. As for the president, his Biden-like response to the issue has now moved the story to a national level. This same president who took 5 days to comment on thousands of students who took to the streets in Iran, in the name of liberty and freedom because he didn't want to take a side. Yet, on this issue he has no problem with making a comment on behalf of his pal Skip. That's leadership for you.
For the record, the Sgt. Crowley handcuffed Mr. Gates with his hands in front. He went easy on him.
Here's my opinion. A police officer is a public official and a public servant. In that position, the burden rests on the officer. An officer is armed. They have a badge. They can arrest people, charge them, and offer them up for prosecution. There is a great responsibility that comes with that authority.
At first, I agreed with the majority of opinions here, throw the racist bum in jail. But I've been reading a few opinion pieces over at Taranto's Best Of The Web at WSJ.com.
http://online.wsj.com/article/best_of_the_web_tod...
And he's convinced me otherwise. I'm not saying Gates is right. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve to spend a few nights in the lock up. What I'm saying is, the greater responsibility rests on the public authority, not on the private individual.
That being said, Taranto also has some great digs at Gates, all well deserved.
For example, now that the initial situation is over, Gates, as university professor and public figure, he now bares the majority of responsibility over the officer, who is not operating in his official capacity, and Gates is flubbing it terribly.
Gee, what a surprise…

That is strange. Can you post from home on a different computer? After purging cache and cookies, even trying a different browser, there should offhand be no way they could identify a specific computer, unless it is some "X-Files" type stuff like perhaps M$ Windoze having some "unique identifier" they can lock into. Likewise a Dell has a "service tag" number that a Windoze app can dig up, etc. But really, once you swap hard drives or change an OS like to Linux, there should be no way to identify a specific computer. And speaking of privacy issues…
Let me take a guess here. You have high-speed at home? On dial-up they normally have dynamic IP address allocation, they give you a number from the pool for the session. With high-speed they have static addresses, one was assigned you. If you have high speed and cannot post from a different computer, the address is blocked. If you have a 56K modem, use the "as needed" dial-up number and can post, the address is blocked. So, ask your provider for a different address.
Gates. Was. Disturbing. The. Peace. With his craziness. And yelling.
And I dread the day when a message is sent to all the cops who risk their lives and health DAILY that it is acceptable for people to scream at/curse/defame or otherwise abuse them during the course of their professional activities. It's sick.
Do firefighters get this kind of treatment? Paramedics?
Hello Jimmy-
Poster art in this case – it's OK, but it is even nicer b/c ugly people are not scowling at me.
Kind of has the look of a rural depiction New Yorker cover from the 40s or 50s.
I wonder where he went to church….
Jimmy, what a gem of a read…..I have said it countless times before, he WAS a radical and has never LOST HIS SPOTS!!!!! it is pathetic that this man is the president of the MOST powerful country in the world…. it s just pathetic!!!
You are absolutely right. Gates had every right to be a complete asshole on his property. There really was no reason for him to be arrested or charged with anything.
Now, if a neighbor was standing there with their young child and Gates went on a profanity-laced racial tirade, then maybe a case of disturbing the peace could be made.
And now that Gates has gone nuclear with the racism stuff, he really does deserve whatever he gets because he brought it uopn himself.
What about 'Full of Life'? Have you seen it?
LUUUUUUUV this movie! Not only do we get Hepburn and Tracy, we get Holiday, Ewell, and Hagen too!
