Excellent movie. I love when Sidney Poitner says in a unyielding voice, "They Call Me MR TIBBS!"
Is the title about about Obama and death of health care reform?
Is the descriptor about about Obama and death of health care reform?
or the deaths (murder) resulting from ObamaCare… who knows.
This isn't one of those movies. It is a movie where a "Black" man gets a job by mail. His job is investigator. It is in the south. Because he is black, his actions are automatically suspect. The sherrif has a murder on his hands. He doesn't have a clue as to who did it or how to proceed. He reluctantly uses Mr. Tibbs.
More and I will spoil it for others.
well then I stand corrected.
No offense meant.
So Obama's approval ratings [55% Approve, 41% Disapprove 4% Dont Care] have dipped below Bush's [56% Approve, 33% Disapprove 11% Dont Care] for the same period of their first years. (USA Today Gallup Poll). Of course we all know that Bush had the highest ever approval ratings after that due to 9-11.
Is it safe to say Barry will garner the same sort of approval ratings rise after ObamaCare? After all, people tend to give presidents higher ratings after a major catastrophe.
none taken I haven't seen it
How many Mr. Tibbs movies were there?
Open thread:
Took one for the team and watched "Crossing Borders."
Stay far away from this unless you want to see Harrison Ford humiliate himself for cattle feed for his ranch. He is now on my major duty sh!t list.
All I know of is two. "In The Heat of The Night" and "They call me, MISTER Tibbs!"
They put that clip in every Academy Awards montage. I joked with a film school friend of mine: if we ever do a movie or TV show with a montage in it, we'll slip that line in there just for the hell of it.
Quick synopsis of the movie please.
The arrogance of Obama knows no boundries. He is now saying he RESCUED the economy. Some rescue.
Regarding health care "reform", when the Clinton's tried it in '93, Senator Phil Graham from Texas had the best line, ever. He said the following ( I am paraphrasing) that "Democrats will be hunted down by dogs in a year or so if this health care bill passes". Nothing has changed. They WILL be hunted down by dogs if this monstrosity goes through.
Sounds like an "Agenda" movie, designed to put the illegals in a rose-colored glasses kind of light.
This "rescue" is going bring us to an ugly place for 10+ years.
What a great movie, I watch it everytime it's on.
I am so tired of all the NEW RIGHTS being foisted upon us, while attempts are being made to remove the old ones.
I saw that, is he delusional?? Can he be removed from office due to mental instability? Because that statement qualifies him for a long stay at Bellevue….
And written in a half hour for skulls full of mush. Its a "beaut." Ashley Judd looks awful too- no make-up- –C'mon Ashley!!!
There was a third, called 'The Organization' in 1971.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067535/
I wish we could remove him for mental instability.
It kills me to see Han Solo and Indiana Jones get pimped like this…..
Exactly!!!!!
In NC they are raising taxes thru the roof. Someone called in to register complaint about having to pay more taxes when they were going broke to a rep. and the rep said —that way gov't. services will be in place when they need it. Pretzel Logic!
Concerning "Pretzel Logic", CrisD, Check out the latest ethics complaint on Palin. Seems someone takes exception to her setting up a fund to pay for the legal bills answering all the prior charges. They state that she uses her position as governor unethically to set up this fund.
Never mind the FACT that she wouldn't be in this position to need the fund if the nutjobs would just leave her alone.
Ashley Judd can take a flying leap for all I care. Mediocre actor, wannabe activist….
Well put, they cause a situation and then attack Palin for responding to the situation.
WTF is happening to this country???
People are being attacked by Saul Alinsky types. The funny thing is ; Palin probably would have just faded into obscurity. As it is, she has been brought front and center time and again. And HER MESSAGE is getting far wider play.
The backlash on this will be far and wide ranging. Look to see her in many races from August 2009 until November 2012.
So THE ONE calls the director of the CBO into the oval office. Do you think there was any arm twisting going on? And do you think that if it were President Bush calling in the CBO director to twist his arm about some other project? You would have Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Nancy Pelosi and the rest of the usual suspects would be calling for IMPEACHMNET!
We complain about the media (they deserve it) but our congressional democrats are just as complicit.
It just sucks to see her get attacked constantly like this. It's petty and juvenile.
Yes, it does suck. What we are witnessing is the death knell of liberalism as we know it. It is painful to watch, especially when it lashes out at someone we like.
When almost 75% of the United States says it ain't broke don't fix it, Why is Romney dead set on helping Obama on Healthcare reform?
http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/thegaggle/archive/...
In the Heat of the Night deserved all of the many awards it received. Rod Steiger definitely deserved his Best Actor awards. Poitier was excellent as well and parlayed the role into a sequel, but make no mistake, this was Steiger's film. Some other great acting jobs included Warren Oates as the deputy, and the actress who played Delores talking about that cool marble on her "bahdie." And how can anyone forget the villain dancing around to the strains of "Foul Owl on the Prowl" on the juke box.
That line always had me wondering… when Samuel L. Jackson uses the variety of the line in Unbreakable, was the "Tibbs" line where it came from..
"You know when I knew, David? It was the kids. It was when they called me Mr. Glass!! {short pause and then in a whisper…) They call me Mr. Glass"
Say it ain't so Mitt!!
Remember, while he was governor, he got his healthcare bill passed. Well, after Mitt left, the liberals changed it and now that state is in the RED.
Where can you get a recording of "Fowl Owl on the Prowl"?
As time goes on, I like this film more and more. I now understand the pressure the Chief Gillespie was under.
Found it on YouTube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2LedoHwygE
It is on the soundtrack CD for the movie – available among other places, at Amazon. I didn't bother to check if it is available for download individually
He has been on my sh!t list since "Seven Days and Seven Nights" as far as acting goes.
Perhaps Mr. Ford can be persuaded to come live in my neck of the border….see what it's really like when illegals cross. I lost a dear friend to illegals, and my father's best friend was held at knife point during a carjacking. Just two examples of the many ways I have been personally scarred by this plague.
But I suppose living in Jackson Hole, Wyoming has its perks….
So cool that you posted the link to 'Fowl Owl on the Prowl' as today is Anthony James' birthday. He's the actor who plays Ralph in the movie. A fine character actor who walked away from the biz after he made 'Unforgiven' with Clint Eastwood.
He decided to devote himself full time to being an artist and is an accomplished painter. I looked him up while in Boston last October and he was gracious enough to allow me to spend an afternoon with him. It was a great day.
'In the Heat of the Night' is one of those films that will stand the test of time. A classic in every sense of the word.
Did you also see the way Rahm Emmanuel was LOOKING at Obama???
Slowly nodding in approval at his speech….kind of eerie.
You are so right.
Hey, are you up to your armpits in a project?
No, I am still recovering from the picture Drudge had overnight of Pelosi and Obama. She looked drugged out.
She probably was….only way he can control her at this point. She is starting to piss him off.
Anthony James is one of those guys that pops up in everything. Truly one of the greats.
First time I watched "Unbreakable" I thought the same thing! Almost like a juxtaposition of a strong moral character (Virgil Tibbs) and a weak amoral one (Elijah Price).
That last line he whispers begs for pity, and gets none.
I wish.
Pelosi = 100 yard dash in a 90 yard gym…….
Yep, and by propping Obama, he gets street cred for what he did in Massachusetts.
Last night when I logged into my yahoo acct. to check my e-mail there was a big headline: "Breaking News: Ethics Violation Charges Brought Against Sarah Palin" or something like that. My heart sunk until I read what was going on. So, basically, she has lots of frivilous lawsuits brought against her, starts a fund to pay her legal bills and because she is well-known and able to raise money she has violated some sort of ethical code. Bizarre. But a lot of people will see/hear the headline and assume she has really done something bad. And that's the whole point, I guess.
I agree. Sidney Poitier was great and this was an excellent movie.
You know, he's been going down hill for me as an actor for a long time. I do know if he's just not picking good roles or he doesn't care (maybe he's just in it for the money?), but whatever it is, I no longer see his name as a draw.
Open Thread question! (I love these threads.. cause I can just ask about anything i find on teh net, political-non-political, whatever).. but this one is my usual political question.
As everyone remembers (or should know by now) about Mr. Alford and "SENATOR, No Ma'am" Barbara Boxer… and the fact that he was insulted… Well, Mr. Alford was on the BOR show… and I have to ask is Bill claimed that Boxer's comments/endorsements are not racially motivated…. is he REALLY that stupid at times? (It's reasons like this that I laugh at leftists who claim BOR is a "conservative spokesperson".
http://hotair.com/archives/2009/07/21/harry-alfor...
(see the last 90 seconds or so of the interview.. and see what Mr. Alford REALLY thinks about "Senator, not Ma'am" Boxer…WOW!Q)
bp_barns@yahoo.com, this is my disposable account.
I think she really likes the Jack Nicholson "Joker" look….
Maybe I see it a bit different, but I like the way liberalism, as in leftist dogma, is destroying itself.
As an aside, a little research reveals Quincy Jones gets song writing credit, but the actual singers are a couple of guys billing themeselves as Boomer & Travis rom a long forgotten group "The Lewis & Clarke Expedition." BTW, to Oscarfoxtango, if you download mp3's you can get just this song as a single on Amazon for 89 cents.

I never understood how Mr. Tibbs could buddy up to the local redneck held in the jail. That is how he ultimately solved the case, finding out about the backyard abortion and how the money was stolen from the developer from Chicago but made to set up the guy who knew Packy down out at the pool hall.
Also liked the Tennessee Williams character, the old Kluxxer in the big house growing chrysanthemums, (sp? — could say mums), representing the dying of the old south, saying, "there as a time I could have had you taken out and lynched for slapping back at me, you uppity so and so, etc…:
But one of biggest coincidences that is hard to buy is Sam matching quarters and turning them into Andy Jackson folding money and putting it in the bank on the day after the Chicago guy gets mugged. Sam wouldn't kill the money guy, but he would do some window peeping, but he wouldn't let a black man looking at a naked white woman. Of course, no one cares about that now a days.
In fact, that culture is disappearing, unless Jim DeMint and the good old boys can Waterloo Obama.
That's why I hate watching O'Reilly–he's a shameless provocateur.
Provocateur? Hmmm. I don't think so. This was pretty tame compared to the sparks flying that day in Congress.
Don't get me wrong, O'Reilly has at times infuriated me. Specially when he pandered to Obama to get him on his show during the election. What Boxer did was provocative enough. O'Reilly just put it on his show.
When he said that Global Warming is happening and hasn't backed off from that…………well, I used to watch him.
This time, Boxer had her chance to 'splain herself. She didn't.
Well, My understanding (if I have it right) is that he said Boxer wasn't being racist with Alford. That is patently untrue. I have watched the clip elsewhere twice–it is quite hilarious to watch Boxer…
If O'Reilly was backing off from calling Boxer racist..he was being purposefully difficult…and I think he does this often to tease the audience. You know..the old "I am here for the folks..I am not one side or the other..I am fair" Get off it OReilly…it just wears VERY thin with me. Prefer Laura Ingram by far.
Maybe I didn't understand the initial post.
Apparently in Alaska it's illegal to do what she did–set up a legal defense fund. So she had some crappy advisors helping her set it up.
I see your point about O'Reilly backing off from calling Boxer a racist, but I see it more as playing the devil's advocate.
I also prefer Ingram as well.
I'm not a big fan of O'Reilly either. His stance on gun control is beyond stupid.
Devil's advocate? Maybe he thinks he can get Boxer or a defender for her booked on the show if he throws softballs. The spin not exactly stopping there…if you know what I mean.
The entire exchange (Beck showed it and I saw it on Breitbart) was gag me with a spoon condescending-liberal- racism at its most grotesque. Sorry don't have a link but I bet its on You Tube.
No need. I have seen it and I agree. I liked what Beck did with it. Eating pudding.
)
You do have a strong point. I only now see O'Reilly incidentally. When he shows up in short segments featuring someone like Mr. Alford. I no longer waste my time listening to him.
Especially when you consider most of the complaints (20 and counting) have been filed by one woman: Andrea Mcleod- who has said herself she's bitter about the fact that she did not get hired for a state job she applied for. She's think Palin denied her personally. Get over it Andrea
Feds: US man gave al-Qaida NYC subway information
"
NEW YORK (AP) – Authorities revealed Wednesday that an American—charged with providing information to al-Qaida on the New York transit system and attacking a U.S. military base in Afghanistan—has been a secret witness in the fight against terror both here and overseas.
Court papers unsealed in federal court in Brooklyn identified the defendant as Bryant Neal Vinas, also known as "Ibrahim."

Hillary for president, again?
She says it's unlikely, but in a Thai television interview Wednesday, Hillary Rodham Clinton didn't completely close that door.
Asked whether she still aspired to be the first female American president, she said, "That's not anything I'm at all thinking about," adding that she is "100 percent focused" on her role as President Barack Obama's secretary of state.

POTUS Clinton is almost sounding good now
If that's the case, can he use the "No Spin Zone" line anymore? He's spinning (or preventing any commentary to get a guest…(Sound the jeopardy show buzzer here)
Yeah too bad the democrats can't ressurect their KKK…. But they have welfare and other social programs to keep black people under their heels now….
dont' see how that can be illegal, maat.. it's a right in the 5th ammendment?
"…nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law;".
There's no rule on how to arrange for due-process of law?

There's no rule on how to arrange for due-process of law? If you or I asked for donations for a legal fund, we're well within our rights… now if we "demanded" money for a legal fund, I can see the arguement.. and to my knowledge there was never any "force" applied to get people to donate to her legal fund?
Dem reps: read this and weep
Democratic Congressman facing a vote on Obama Care have another reason to think it over very, very carefully. Is it the hand of God or the mouth of Joe Biden? We may never know. But whatever the cause, Republicans, for the first time in L'Age d'Obama, lead Democrats in Rasumssen's Generic Congressional Ballot for the fourth week in a row. And the gap between the two parties is growing wider
Support for Republican congressional candidates has reached its highest level in over two years as the GOP lengthens its lead over Democrats in the latest edition of the Generic Ballot
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that 42% would vote for their district’s Republican congressional candidate while 38% would opt for the Democratic candidate.

Are the Conservatives finally waking up ?
Maybe someone should investigate this person. Send the IRS after her or something and see how she likes it
A bunch of "beautiful and sympathetic" illegals trying to get into the U.S. with varying degrees of success. Harrison is care-worn ICE officer. Highlight (lowlight): a 10 minute conversation at gunpoint between officer and someone during bloody shootout.
Before you do anything, stop and recall the face of the poorest most helpless destitute person you have ever seen and ask yourself. Is what I am about to do going to help him? Ghandi
I'm sure your poll included the opinion of the poorest amoung us….Higher ground includes health care for all.

I have to find my disposable e-mail account. I'll be back.
I think I just heard at least two real questions from reporters at the big press conference on TV. I'm in shock.
Press conference update: Last question definitely a plant. No longer in shock.
For any one who is interested, there is an update on the latest Sarah Palin ethics complaint.
It seems that the complaint has been leaked to the press in violation of Alaskan law. The investigation is still on-going and there has been no conclusion. Alaskan law states that ethics complaints are investigated confidentially and should not be revealed to the public until the investigation is complete. The rumor that an investigator has found ethics violation is only true in the fevered brains of Palin-haters.
Off subject…did you get the email I sent?
I just checked it out. I'll send you a note in a second. I got back and totally forgot about it. Sorry dude.
I think it had to do with the fact that she was a sitting official and you can't then solicit funds for personal use? I'm neither an Alaskan nor a lawyer and the suit sounds like more horse**** to me anyway, but I just think that if you're setting it up in a state where the laws may be unique (I hear Alaska is unique in many ways, have you heard? ;-D ), you triple, then triple check again to make sure it can't bite you in the rear.
Excellent movie.. one of the older movies that I have actually seen….
Go figure, planted questions from the MESSIAH? cmon, no way!!!
Way!!!
(I know: "way old" joke)
Actually, I can't believe that I watched the whole press conference. But the Prez appears on TV so seldom, I wanted to see what he looks like.
We're living in an upside-down unparallel universe.
LOL…. 5 major speeches and Bush made 4 in 8 years…. the man is constantly in CAMPAIGN MODE…… I think that he actually got a feeling last night, that his health care plan is not GOING to get passed until the fall…
I am sooo happy to read that…. I honestly cannot wait until we are back in a CAPITALIST society… out with the Czars and the lib's and the progressive and there cronnies.. we need to get back to conservative values!!!
If so, I'm hoping that his feeling is correct – and then not passed in the fall either. And that he doesn't have a clue on how to "fix" that.
(I also suspect that he has mirrors attached to his 'prompters.)
Just having to refer to "the latest Sarah Palin ethics complaint" says it all. The latest? Haven't they already "exposed" every detail, real and imagined, of her life?
However, if the lefties are so absolutely committed to continuing to kick her while she's "down" ( for lack of better word here), maybe they'll be distracted from mis-covering more pressing events for a while.
