Conservatives often talk about what they don’t like about Hollywood. That’s okay, but it’s not productive. Maybe it’s time we talked about what we do like? More to the point, let’s point out when Hollywood has gotten it right. And that brings me to the...

Anyone else get a chuckle out of "The Friends Of Eddie Coyle" starring Peter Boyle!?
Hehehehe
Another day closer to our troops being used as a shield for the aggressor nation of Israel to make an unprovoked attack on Iran! Everything must be sacrificed for Israel's benefit! Let's send them some more money so they can more effectively spy on us.
Leave it to BH to constantly show posters of movied I've never seen or in many cases heard of. Glad I have Netflix.
so since i can't comment on that, what about Charlize Theron as Dagny Taggart?
I almost think it needs to be someone who isn't beautiful in the obvious sense.
other than that i don't know what to think.
I notice that Charlize Theron is looking to make Atlas Shrugged into a mini-series. As someone who was engaged in trying to make Aileen Wuornos into a sympathetic victim in the film "Monster," and is an active member of PETA, I sincerely hope she is not awarded the role as I fear it would be a changed message. No, I would much rather see Angelina Jolie, hopefully with a great screenplay that somehow makes the cumbersome "Shrugged" into a dynamic vehicle of it's message that works for today.
Another day closer to the midtrerm elections.
Check out this from Drudge. It is getting harder for Obama to get "free" airtime.

I hear you about not being beautiful in the obvious sense. How about Carrie Prejean?
Yes, I saw this.
Another day closer to America drinking a strong cup of coffee…
Notice the echo on this thread…I did…
Peter Boyle was from Norristown, Pa. and his father used to star on local television in Philadelphia. Anybody remember "Uncle Pete's Funhouse?" It was a kid's show in the early 50's, so you would pretty much have to be from Philly and born prior to 1950. Pete Junior was also the title character in the movie "Joe" the film that brought us the ever-lovable Susan Sarandon. He also was great in that movie with Michael Keaton about the mental patients who get loose in New York on their way to a Yankees game. Boyle's character thought he was the messiah and delivered the great line {sic} "You dare take the minivan of the living Christ?"
no too "hot"
I'm thinking maybe Maggie Gyllenhall or Kaylee from firefly someone like that.
really I'd like to see an unknown cast. they don't bring any baggage
You really are on to something when you say Kaylee from Firefly. She is a terrific actress.
i don't know what else she's been in but I liked her in that series.
This movie was released a couple months ago by Criterion. I've never seen but I guess I'll have to now.
In honor of the anniversary of the moon landing, I Netflixed For All Mankind, Al Reinert's documentary about the Apollo program (on Blu-Ray, from Criterion). All the footage used is real and, in some cases, quite beautiful. In the special features, they interviewed Apollo 12 astronaut Al Bean who has since retired and has gone on to be a painter of space imagery. He seems like the coolest, most humble guy in the world! (He was played by Dave Foley in HBO's From the Earth to the Moon.)

I haven't seen her in anything else either, but…………..it would be an interesting take.
See, in my mind, I have always thought of Dagny Taggert as being tall. Severely beautiful. No need for makeup.
The role needs someone who can show what is happening internally. The actress who protrayed Kaylee has that in droves. She isn't tall and she is pretty, but………..
Victoria Jackson??
Her political persuasions are beyond question for Taggart………..
Yes, but I don't think she can get past her voice. No offense meant.

The actress who played Kaylee (Jewel Staite [?]) also appeared in a few episodes of the canceled Fox series Wonderfalls, which I highly recommend (Firefly writer/producer Tim Minear worked on it). She played the jilted bride from Hell, quite the opposite of sweet, innocent Kaylee.

good point………
The book shouldn't be hard to condense.
Poor attempt at thread-jacking, homeboy.
Try harder next time.
Never have seen this one… another BH movie I have no clue about…
OPEN THREAD MADNESS!!!

Before I came to this site, I thought I knew a little bit about classic movies. Now I realize I need to get on the stick and see some of the old masterpieces.
Nice work Big Hollywood.
yeah, severe. beautiful but not traditionally so
again no offense meant, but isn't Dagny supposed to be mid 20's?
I know actresses have a range they can play but eventually it begins to look like Madonna playing 15 yr old Evita.
It has to be believable.
In the intro to the 1989 Academy Award nominee, For All Mankind, last night on TCM with Buzz Aldren and Robert Osborne, Buzz said he thinks the movies and books of his day sparked more interest in space because they were "more realistic," and how the movies now have so much fantasy they tend to make young people think we have more capabilities than we really do. This is exactly what I thought of when I saw the recent G.I. Joe trailer.
Our service members are outstanding but why must they be given non-existent mythical status in movies not based in reality? I'm all for the James Bond type gadget or two that ups the side for good but morphing bodies and flying seems to transform those who serve beyond something to aspire to but into fiction. A disservice all the way around for me.
Especially as I am watching on TCM The Story of G.I. Joe with Robert Mitchum who is my favorite Marine in the movie Heaven Knows Mr. Allison (1957). What mother wouldn't be proud to think her child would grow up to be this man. A real man. What character development is there when you are jetting above the ignorant masses?
Stafford
You reaslly need to stop getting your news and information from CNN and MSNBC
The reality is100% opposite from your opinion.
A good approach to a happy life is
"Trust but Verify"
Do some Due dilligence and all will be ok.
I'm with you on this. The role should be given to someone that understands the message, and while I think Ms. Theron is a fine actress and very beautiful, I don't know what her politics would do to that message.
Does Angie Harmon have the acting skills?
jes' speculatin'…..
I have a face in mind but I haven't been able to put an actress with it. I was trying NOT to dredge up somebody so absolutely left-wing that their bias would make their acting even more unbelievable.
She has the severe look needed.
Angie Harmon would be perfect. That voice!
When I see Obama looking into the teleprompter I often think about The Picture of Dorian Gray.
I always thought she did a good job on Law and Order, haven't seen her in anything else. But there's just something about her…..
I think more about Khan….
I've never seen the movie, but the book on which it's based is quite good. In particular, the dialogue is fantastic; there are very few cases where an author does a better job of getting his characters' voices down pat.
Robert Mitchum was great in just about everything. Definitely one of my favorites of all time.
Have you seen him in "The Yakuza"? Very good.
I want someone who respects the character's principles. Hank and Joelim are getting it. Angie Harmin would be terrific, Charlize and Julia would suck. Very few people have the determination and critical thinking ability to get through the book. To me, the film or mini-series needs to adapt enough to make people understand the principles involved.
T.R. – Stafford should never set the agenda here; ignoring her is the way to go

Yes!! I thought it would be a bad movie with a great actor. It turned out to be way better than I though.
And who can forget his turn as a bad guy in the original Cape Fear…..

Mitchum's performance as Eddie Coyle, while not one of his better known, certainly qualifies as one of his best. I'd seen this movie years ago on cable somewhere, loved it, but couldn't find it anywhere on home video until the terrific Criterion DVD release a couple months ago. And what a supporting cast: Peter Boyle, Richard Jordan, Steven Keats, Alex Rocco, Joe Santos, Mitchell Ryan, Jack Kehoe… Not a metrosexual in the bunch. Ah, the good old days, when men, not boys, were cast as men…
Color her ignored.
What I liked about "The Yakuza" is that is pushed the boundries of martial arts, but didn't break them, and the sword fighting was excellent.
'The Friends of Eddie Coyle' is an excellent movie, with Robert Mitchum at his best. Based on a novel by George V. Higgins, it takes place in Boston and is filled with a great ensemble of wonderful character actors, including the late Peter Boyle, Steven Keats and Richard Jordan, who nearly steals the film as 'Foley'.
If you're looking for a gritty little crime drama, this is a good one. I highly recommend it. A few links for a taste.

Every one likes to fixate on known actors. I prefer un or lesser knowns. As I said earlier they don't bring the baggage. I don't need them to believe Rand's words (face it how many in hollywood do?) but if their political lives clash with the message of the story, it will distract and cheapen it. It will destroy the believability
Jed, I remember seeing Peter Boyle for the first time in 'Joe' He was so good, I thought they cast a real guy right off the street. Also good in 'Taxi Driver' with DeNiro. Check out 'The Friends of Eddie Coyle' if you can.
One of my favorites. Mitchum is pitch perfect in a role tailored for him. Solid work all around.
The Friends of Eddie Coyle is fantastic. It's one of my favorite Mitchum movies, right up there with The Night of the Hunter.
In my view, the movie should not be aimed at you (e.g. preaching to the choir) but could be skillfully done to attract new younger viewers to the themes. If you've watched the Fountainhead, it was good, but you couldn't have Coop doing oratory for 20 minutes and get anybody to watch it. Still, an unknown or lesser known actress could work. One who definitely has the acting chops is Connie Britton. I don't know her politics, she seems to have the good sense not to use her position to flout them at the world.
Yeah Jed. I grew up there and watched it too, indeed, Uncle Pete was on WRCV3. Sally Starr was a neighbor – that's when I had the good fortune to meet the stooges. Left a lasting impression, as I've tried to embrace the stooge concept ever since – Nyuk, nyuk. Joe was great, but his performance in Young Frankenstein was his best.
Now that is very cool! Just ordered your first book btw, and am looking forward to reading it.
CNN is tired of hearing about the Wise Latina remark. Watch at least through 1:20 to see clips of the vid some conservative kids made asking Hispanic people if they think a statement similar to Sotomayor's is racist: http://www.cnn.com/video/?/video/offbeat/2009/07/... Also: moonwalking!
Very, very good, FeFe.
She was also on Stargate (the original series), I think, as a doctor for awhile shortly after Firefly was stupidly, stupidly cancelled.
Hey, I know, Israel can just wait until it's been wiped off the map — and then react. Oh, woops, won't exist!
HA! Good link. Love O.T. Madness!
Let us hope Israel is doing a good job spying on us! It dramatically increases our chances of finding out what is in all these bills the Democrats are passing and where all our money is going, because the Dems are sure in no hurry to tell us.
Yeah that's what I was thinking too. Too bad, a B lister might be the best thing for something like this.
Self-fulfilling prophesy time, expect madness and it shall come.
Young Frankenstein is a classic, Peter Boyle's "Puttin on the Ritz" is my ringtone….
Thanks guys, I did get a good laugh out of it…..
Damn straight. I worked with Jack Kehoe many years ago and the man was just solid. Great actor. Good man.
On another note, I thought it was hilarious when Andrew lost his balls on Red Eye last night. I'm glad to see it was only a temporary ball loss, but I worry that in his quest for conservatism, he maybe turning a bit kinky? I should hope we see the same on Beck and Hannity – as this new message will totally confuse the libs. Way to go!
Since this is the open thread, I just have to say, the institutional anti-HP sentiment on here has been very amusing. You guys were more open-minded towards Bruno. I've heard of rabid HP fans, but I've never seen such rabid HP haters. Funny.
New from Drudge:
http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/obama-to-lobb...
Occupant in Chief does not trust the Senate Dems to back his health care power grab, so he is bringing them to the White House for some "up close and personal" encouragement, Chicago style.
Guess now that his backers in the election have already been paid off and it looks unlikely he will be able to cough up even more anytime soon, he has been reduced to hard ball tactics. "You back this or ACORN won't be out there getting you votes!" Reply: "Oh great, then the Republican guy will win either way. And you want support on cap and trade as well? Do I get dinner first?"
Ronald Reagan was a masterful politician who brilliantly asked Americans during a 1980 televised debate with then-incumbent Jimmy Carter, "Are you better off than you were four years ago?" The rest is campaign history.
So here's a little test for our Republican friends to help them decide the status of the nation's economy. I dare them to answer these questions truthfully, as Americans first, and not as transparent partisan stooges:
1. Is the stock market stronger today than when Bush left office?
2. Is the banking industry stronger than when Bush left office?
3. Are Wall Street companies (JP Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, etc) doing better today than when Bush left office?
4. Are the credit markets doing better than when Bush left office?
5. Is the auto industry doing better than when Bush left office?
6. Are the housing markets doing better than when Bush left office?
7. Are retailers doing better than when Bush left office?
8. Is the technology industry doing better than when Bush left office?
0. Are monthly jobless claims lower than when Bush left office?
10. Is consumer confidence higher than when Bush left office?
Of course, the answer to every single one of these black and white questions is yes.
Hey, didn't the soldier who contested the prez's legitimacy win his case? (at least, it was dismissed?)
Isn't that kinda big news?
I don't like her as Dagny. She is the wrong look entirely.
Dagny's stregnth came from her personality not her appearance. Jolie's appearance is a huge distraction.
The script will be interesting, the book can really drag in parts.

I also watched 1945's The Picture of Dorian Gray with George Sanders, Angela Lansbury, and Hurd Hatfield as Gray. I'm not up on my "gothic horror" but this was a good movie, and genuinely creepy at times. I was familiar with the idea of the aged painting, having seen it parodied before (probably in a Get Smart episode) but there are also serious religious undertones at work. Interesting stuff I must say.
And, much to my delight, the folks at Film Score Monthly have released the complete score to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, composed by a 28-year old James Horner, remastered and presented in its entirety for the first time. It certainly made my Monday morning.
yes, that becomes distracting from the movie when they use an activist
Wow, another movie… I have yet to see that is featured….. man, I feel out of touch…. Does Andrew give you a list of movies that you can use???? we need newer movies that the younger crowd knows about….. I mean I am 40 and have no clue about most of this movies….
Check it out. It's good to mix it up. C'mon, live a little. Also, not to get too picky but there have been some movie posters from the last 20 years recently listed including:
Ace Ventura/The Abyss/A.I./The Pledge/Jackie Brown/About A Boy/Austin Powers 'Goldmember' to name a few
If you ask me, some of the artwork from the older films 50's/60's/70's in particular are much more interesting as are most of the films.
I'm from Boston, and Friends of Eddie Coyle holds a special place in my heart. Robert Mitchum and Peter Boyle are both excellent. If you read the book, the Bruins are spelled Broons (or something close to that) to demonstrate the accent. You get to see the old Boston Garden, from back in the days before sponsored stadiums. There's really only one part of the plot that seems dated.
This gritty portrayal of Boston really paved the way for movies like The Departed and Gone Baby Gone. So many films show you only the Harvard Crimson Boston, which just isn't the way most people live there.
One great 'lost' Boston are movie is Ruben Ruben with Tom Conti. It shows a pretty clean Boston Area, but it's smoldering with deep hatred, so it's accurate. Why won't somebody release this on DVD???
A year or two ago she was on the short lived "Woman' Murder Club" which wasn't actually a bad show, but it got killed over the course of the writers' strike. I did enjoy her on L & O (which was what? 15 years ago??), but she's kind of a b-lister now. I doubt she has the marquee value to get a project like this green-lit on her name alone.
Well, guess what? Sarah Palin has a new ethics complaint.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090721/ap_on_re_us/u...
This complaint is about her setting up a fund to help pay her lawyers fees for the earlier complaints.
Basically it is a circular argument.
From what I can tell, all these ethics complaints are designed to keep her from doing her job and to deplete her bank account.

Not only do you get to see the B's playing at the Old Garden but a chance to see the legend, numba 4, Bobby Orr, do his thing. Love that scene where Mitchum watches Orr. Also, if I remember correctly you get to see The Chief, Johnny Bucyk along with Freddie Stanfield goin' at it with Keith Magnusson from the Blackhawks during the game.
Old School.
Love it.
DId anyone watch the premiere of the new "Torchwood?" Running all this week. This was my first time watching, and even with good fill-in hour beforehand, I just…wasn't engaged. The show has tons of things I love it just didn't click for me. However, on the plus side, Hell's Kitchen is back tonight! There's a British import I can root for!
There is a great picture of Pelosi and Obama on the Drudge Report right now.
She looks like she is constipated and a little out of it.

This is a great Mitchum film of the early 1970s. I was going to acting at Northeastern when they were filming this movie in the Boston area. I remember seeing Mitichm outside the bar sitting in a chair while they were shooting. That was the first time I saw him and ten years later I met him in Hollywood with a friend and I heard some of the greatest stories about Hollywood. I have had this poster in my office for years, I feel very connected to this film, since it was around the time I started acting. Since I was born and raise in the Boston area, I knew all the places where they shot this film. Alex Rocco was from Cambridge and I was friend of his niece.
I worked at a local theater when this movie was in distribution, and I watched it many times while I had access. Damned fine little movie, and Mitchum gives a great performance. The book is very good – the author was a Boston District Attorney. His plotlines and dialogue are workday observations, not some whizkids idea of how tough guys talk.
