Garofalo Complains: American Media Too Conservative, Walks Off Stage

GAROFALO: Well, I think people like us better now that Obama’s there. It’s a much better representative of the States I think, because George Bush certainly makes it seem like we’re the biggest jerks in the world. And it’s nice to have Obama. But there’s certainly no shortage of still political things to discuss and media things to discuss.
Newsbusters reports that just a few hours later Garofalo walked off stage after failing to win over a UK audience:
Janeane Garofalo cut short her Saturday afternoon set in Latitude’s comedy tent because of the poor reception she was given by the audience. The American comedienne’s rare UK live appearance was expected to be one of the highlights in a strong comic line-up, but she failed to win over the festival crowd.
Best known to TV viewers as talent booker Paula in The Larry Sanders Show and political campaigner Louise in the final series of The West Wing, Garofalo was due perform for half an hour, but left the stage after less than ten minutes when her routine about post-9/11 security checks at airports met with stony silence.
“It’s not you, I blame myself for this,” she said before leaving the stage.

This just proves to me the left can not enforce or spout their principals or lack of, without feeling the love. It is what they hated about Bush, he continued to do what he thought was right, damn the public perception. It is the reason we must not give up. Garafolo is "red meat" to conservatives. She is one of the one's we love to hate, almost the way the "libs" hate Governor Palin. I think the question of interest really is: "does she actually believe what she says, or is she just saying it to tick conservatives off and make conservative cries of media bias seem more like just normal partisan whining rather than the fact supported claim it really is?"

I almost have to feel sorry for her. Relax folks I said almost. It appears that outside of her "Hollywood Sound Chamber" where everyone simply echos her ludicrous ideas she is nothing more than a small minded, out of touch, self righteous, C-List, has been comedienne/actress who appearently only really cares about being liked by others. That probably explains her conservative bashing comedy routine she tries to pass off as cutting edge humor. There you go Janeane if you don't have anything new and original to say just go back to the old standards of attacking Christians and Conservatives. It's working great for Bill Maher and all the late-night talkshow hosts.
It strikes me as odd too that if she really cared so much about being liked by others why does she go to such lengths to mutilate her own body and appearence. Ah but don't worry Janeane, you can always feel better by simply adding another tattoo that resembles some mindless doodling akin to that found on any 9th Graders Pee Chee. That will fill the hole that hurts so much inside you.

I feel sorry for J Garofalo. What can I say? Her humor, prior to 9/11 was excellent. She lost her edge and her soul. At least when faced with stony silence, she admits that she has lost her affinity with her audience. Maybe she can comeback. Who knows? Odd things are happening outside the beltway and outside of controlled audiences.
In most ways, the actors and actresses of Hollywood need us more than we need them.
Sure, once in a while, they can influence us, but in order for Hollywood to be successful long-term, it MUST reflect it's audience. Not the other way around.

I don't hate her Jed, really. I'm just tired of her. I'm embarrassed for her. I worked with her years ago on a movie and she was both pleasant and professional. Something has happened to her over the years. I've read articles where she has discussed her Dad. Clearly, she seems to have a lot of issues with the man. My ten cents psychology tells me much of her anger stems around stuff with her father. She's not a happy person and she acts out accordingly. I wish she would STFU and get some therapy. Okay, we have now confirmed she does not know how to turn on a TV nor can she read magazines and newspapers, and forget asking her about that internet thingy. She is well on track to potential starvation from being unable to use a microwave, but this shall be blamed on mean conservative customer support reps who refused to help her when she asked about replacing the lost remote.

One BIG difference between conservatives and liberals–conservatives can and will acknowledge when/if the MSM gets something right. Liberals are totally lacking in that capacity. I can only surmise that their whole philosophy is so interwoven that the entire thing collapses if they admit to being wrong on even one point.
Conservatives maintain a sense of humor as well.

Several explanations for this.
1 – she knows no news outlet means anything except the opposition media (for the rebellion!)
2 – unless absolutely everybody says the exact same thing in the exact same way and there is NO opposing voices, she focuses on the thorn in her side rather the pillow under her head

That philosophy doesn't hold water. There are too many media giants that are identified liberals – Cronkite, Rather, Jennings, Couric and so many other not-so-major talking heads that are blatant liberals or who blatantly shill for liberals (Rather lost his job over it, sweet!). And if you go over to the entertainment side of the house, it gets even more blatant – Letterman, Leno, Maher, Oprah, and other "entertainment figures" like Garofolo are all identified liberals. And they are the ones that get the coverage from the major outlets and theirs are the careers that flourish. How many people in the media dare to identify themselves as conservatives in the news or entertainment industry? That is besides Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham and others like them who have to constantly withstand the acid thrown at them for speaking what they believe to be truth to power? it's infinitely more difficult for a conservative to break into the business than a liberal. Therefore, conservatives have a valid argument that the left owns the media.
I remember when she used to be pretty funny–a witty and sarcastic comedienne who wasn't all that bad looking. Now she's just an obsessed, sad individual who looks like just another piece of trash. Seriously, her liberal activism is all she lives for these days. She has zero comic credibility outside the kind of sock-puppet audience you see on "The Daily Show." (One of those non-conservative media venues that seems to have escaped her attention.) But, once again, she is not worth all of the sturm and drang that she receives from the otherwise reasonable people here at BH. She is simply not worth it. She does not see that America is hated by terrorists just the same as it was when Bush was President, nor does she see that the only difference is that we are weaker now. Jed, there isn't a whole lot I can get into on this board but I can say there are many actors here in LA who understand how important it is 'to play the game well'. It can be a difficult profession by itself even without the politics thrown in.
No question, there are many actors who exaggerate, to some degree, how liberal they truly are (I choose liberal from leftist because to me they're quite different). Having said that, most actors, writers and other creatives will do what they must do to work. What I've been discovering, as I talk to other actors more and more, is that there are literally thousands of actors (no exaggeration) along with other professionals who share conservative points of view. And that, my friend, is very encouraging.

You might want to check out the dozens and dozens of studies on media (done by mostly leftwing university researchers, BTW.) You will find that the MSM (ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, major newspaper and news magazines) do indeed heavily tilt left.

NEITHER of those things are automatic indicators of "liberal" political leanings. Victoria Jackson has had some great posts, but it would be nice to see other and more currently relevant Hollywood participants. I know that there has been mention of some and one or two that did an article. Big Hollywood needs to reach out to them more to give this place the promise it started with.

I visited the UK in 1997 and the airport had high security with guns and if you walked away from your bag it was a big deal. We had to wait for them to check and clear an area were someone left their bag behind. So making jokes in the UK about airport security would fall flat as she forgot about the tragic bombings over the years in the UK and other parts of the world. 2 hotels were just blown up so lets make fun of security ha ha… In the USA we have the big 3 networks NBC, CBS and ABC and they are liberal.
