Talk about memory lane, Tom Watson shot 65 this morning at Turnberry!
OPEN threads…..
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,533001,00.htm...
I have to admit I am sick to my stomach over this one……17 children…. and 9 where home when these killings took place… what a shame!
Not that anyone here cares but the Emmy nominations were announced this morning. Expanded categories and still no acting nominations for Battlestar Galactica. Only one technical nomination for Fringe. Only three technical nominations for True Blood. And Family Guy for best comedy series? Really?!
On the plus side, Taking Chance got a bunch of nominations including one for Kevin Bacon, Pushing Daisies (R.I.P.) got a well-deserved nom for costume design, and Michael Emerson was nominated for his role as Ben on Lost.
And I'm a fan of 30 Rock but some of its nominations were just gratuitous. Jennifer Aniston for best guest actress? Really!?
I'm a South Florida resident and the local news has been covering this one. It's insane. Who knows how far this will go?
gratuitous nominations . . . . I think you've hit on why most people don't care about these award shows. They are too political and too gratuitous.
Apparently Michael Moore joined the Polar Bear Club….
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,533080,00.htm...
Thank god there where NO PICTURES….
Amen to that…..
The question then becomes, how do they get the Michael Moore glop off the baby seals??
Maybe they should have club'd him like a baby harp seal!
It would have to be a pretty big club for that melon-head….
Did anyone else see that complete tool Krugman on Colbert?
Colbert is such a pussy, he got this close to calling out Krugman for being an idiot regarding unemployment but backed off enough to let him off the hook. Krugman is a liar and a fraud and Colbert gave this a-hole a forum to spout idiocy and let him go without ever really challenging anything he said.
If Colbert was honest in his "journalism" or whatever he thinks he's doing, I'd be a fan. But as of right now he's just an enabler of stupidity and false information. He should be ashamed…..
I'm actually glad to see Alan Alda got nominated for 30 Rock. I thought his turn was great, and I will be pulling for Jane Krakwoski–she has done amazing stuff on that show, but 22 noms is ridiculous. I think "True Blood" will pick up more next year, although maybe not unless someone on that show learns to do a real Southern accent–they really reek on that show; it's a good thing everyone's so fun to watch nekkid n' bloody! I think this season is off to a much better start than last–they've really found their groove. I actually think the acting noms are pretty spot on. I will say I never had the Galactica or Damages love.
Colbert, is a complete fool…. it is scary that alot of younger americans watch him and Stewart and think they are getting the news…..
I do think True Blood should have gotten more nominations….but the thing that's bugging me this season.. they keep adding more 'supernaturals' way too quickly for my liking… Bacchus, the "unknown" creature, the Sun Cult, ANOTHER mind reader (Btw.. i thought it was established in season one that Mind readers couldn't read the thoughts of other supernatural creatures, only 'regular' humans?), the character change to being a shapeshifter… Am I forgetting any?.
It's almost like, we've got all these ideas.. and we don't know how long HBO is going to keep us going, so let's thrown them all in at once!
That being said… the number of Emmy awards available is getting ridiculous.. (IMO). GIve me the TVLand awards any day of the year

Not so fast, my brother is 52 and thinks Jon Stewart is the smartest man in the world. I love him, but man is he an idiot….
My theory is that a lot of young liberals don't want to watch the real news because they know, even on a subconscious level, that a dose of real news — even the minuscule doses available on MSNBC — will challenge, in one way or another, their assumptions about politics and society. And there's nothing an eager young liberal finds more irritating (because of its difficulty) than having to defend his politics, even to himself.
The kids watch Stewart and Colbert not because they think it's the real news, but because it's all the news they need and they know from experience that it won't challenge their assumptions about the world.
Easy, Michael Moore will lick it off.
Thanks for that visual…..
Colbert is one of the funniest comedians working today – in my opinion – he's razor sharp with improv, when he wants to. But in the end, he's just another left wing liberal.
Jake, your last 2 lines or sentences are perfect….
Hank, smartest man? cmon…. did you at least hit him when he said that????
Leahy Brushes Off Testimony From Witnesses at Sotomayor Hearing
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/07/16/sotoma...
Do you believe Sen. Leahy…..
I hit him EVERY time he says it….
No question the guy can be funny, but when he puts on the "Serious Journalist" hat and pretends to do a serious interview, he panders to the left like a lapdog. Granted he's not as big a left-wing nutburger as Jon Stewart, but c'mon man!! If you're gonna act like you give a crap about the truth then at least be honest in your efforts with an a-hole like Krugman….
Smart man!!!!
What's even more disturbing is what Specter the turncoat said, "Exemplary record….." are you kidding me??
Don't like 60% of her cases get over-turned??
I would agree If Colbert were a serious journalist, or even pretended to try and be unbiased, but he's neither. He's pandering to his audience, the roll over from Stewart. Krugman is a god to those moon bats because he uses big words they don't understand, has lots of initials after his name, and validates all their loony left wing values. All they have to do is point to some inane dribble with Krugman's name on it, and they think they've hit the gold standard.
I wish Colbert would break the mold and just become what he only hints at occasionally. I watched him destroy Dr. Bart Ehrman on his latest book. Ehrman never knew what hit him. Apparently, ridiculing the Gospels is one of his hot buttons.
It's almost like Colbert is ready, willing and able to emasculate anyone guest on his show, if they push his hot buttons, but for the most part, he's comfortable to just move along to get along.
Specter's just doing what he's told so the DSCC will intimidate any primary challengers to drop out of the race. He's an opportunist jerk who stands for nothing but his position of power. His toe the line Dem crap is just so he can regain ranking member status in committees.
See that's the thing. Both he and Stewart pretend to be serious when they can bash conservatives and praise liberals. When they're called out on it, they hide behind the comedian curtain.
Sorry, that's total weaksauce. Both of them know what they're doing.
If you have the grapes to tear one guy apart, then have the grapes to do it to everyone that deserves it. And brother does that a-hole Krugman deserve it…..Colbert doesn't have what it takes to be completely truthful in his interviews.
Completely agree. Specter is a disgrace and the epitomy of a career politician who's only motivation is stay a politician.

Open Thread/ Favorite sounds of mine from Andy McKee. Enjoy:

Eli Wallach is cool too.
I agree. I believe comedy is universal. It transcends gender, race, ethnicity, class, religion, nationality, everything. Which means, nothing and no one should be off limits.
A rule of thumb I use when evaluating humor is, does the joke work if you change the subject? If so, then you have comedy. If it doesn't, then the subject is nothing more than a crutch the comedian uses to prop up their lame material.
Tell an audience 'hey is George Bush stupid or what?' Do they laugh? Tell the same group 'hey is Barrack Obama stupid or what?' and if you get silence, they weren't laughing at the joke, they were laughing at the subject.
And far too much of comedy these days fails that test. It's not humor, its insults. And both Colbert and Stewart flunk that test.
Colbert isn't a journalist…he satirizes conservatism. That's his schtick.
Why should he challege the Left when he himself is a member?
I don't think he joined the club….more likely he belched near by….
Of course he brushed them off! He is trying to re-write HISTORY!!!
http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D99ED63G1...
–LEAHY SAID: "You said that, quote, you 'would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would reach wise decisions.'" —
When in fact the quote is:
–"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."–
I would add letterman and Maher to that list.
Well that's what politicians do. When history doesn't fit their agenda, they rewrite it.
"If you're going to shoot, shoot! Don't talk!"
True, Jake….they just want affirmation, not challenge. To challenge their assumptions is to require them to think, and the government indoctrination centers never taught them that….
I agree…."True Blood" is trying to out-do "Heroes" in plot twists. And you are correct in the mind reading thing…that bugs the hell out of me. It's almost as if HBO is afraid of losing more viewers, or something….
I would add about 90% of people claiming to be comedians these days. They use politics and culture as a crutch to prop up their lame material.
As a matter of fact, it's kind of hard to think up big name comedians who are truly funny. Jeff Dunham leaps to mind.
Any other names I should keep an eye out for?
Must be nice to wake up to a clean slate everyday, huh??
Jennifer Aniston? Where? POST A PIX!!!
Why didn't somebody hold his fat head underwater, for a hour or so?
Hank, I respect the heck out of you but I have to agree, your brother is an idiot.
Not that I can think of, but I'm not really in the loop on comedians these days.
At this point the main streamers are mearly the big brass band playing as loud as they can while the Titanic sinks from beneath them…
Dunham is great, and not PC. He and Ron White and the other "redneck" crew may be the last non-liberals comedians left..
He really does mean well, I look at him as I would a small, dull child….. Like I said, I love the guy, would lay down my life for him, be when it comes to liberal media he's dumb as a stump.
True. If he loses he has to move back to Pennsylvania. I don't think he really wants to leave D.C. and the little fifedom he has created there.
He really does mean well, I look at him as I would a small, dull child….. Like I said, I love the guy, would lay down my life for him, be when it comes to liberal media he's dumb as a stump.
And here's the kicker. He's actually a Libertarian, and a small (and successful) business owner that voted for Obama. I told him when Obamacare bankrupts his business to look in the mirror for blame.
oh goody!… another movie adhering to the internationalists' dogma that "americans are fat and uncouth, especially southerners!" coming in 2010.

Michael Moore on capitalism…
I wouldn't know, I live in a place called reality….
You know the scene where he's dismantling all the pistols and Frankensteining them together??
He ad-libbed the whole scene. Didn't have a clue what he was doing……gotta love Eli Wallach….
Has anyone seen this movie?
Eli Wallach appeared on an episode of Nurse Jackie last week. Dopey show, but it was great to see him again.
Sweet! Andy McKee and his Ron Spillers Harp guitar . . . Way cool, my man, you are at it again
He defines versatility. Great villain in Magnificent Seven too….
A good comedian can be funny even if they are PC. My point is, if the underlying "meat" of the joke is based upon irrational hatred for a political ideology, then its not worthy of the title 'humor.'
Take the guys at South Park for example. They regularly grill pretty much everybody. Which is fine, because the all humor comes from the material itself, it's not predicated on me being biased.
Now that I think about it, there hasn't been a whole lot of real good jokes written about republicans or conservatives for years now. Because all a liberal comedian need say is "how about that George Bush?" and he's got them rolling in the aisles. If they claim to be real comedians, they should be ashamed of themselves.
Michael Moore is a liar and a complete fraud. I highly recommend everyone see Why Michael Moore Hates America. You'll see first-hand what this pig is pushing….
Never even heard of it, but Eli Wallach as a badass Mexican gunfighter always works….
He does look like a pig, doesn't he?
Yep, works for me.
He really does mean well, I look at him as I would a small, dull child….. Like I said, I love the guy, would lay down my life for him, but when it comes to liberal media he's dumb as a stump.

Agree totally
They'll never be ashamed because they're enabled by each other. Most of the entertainment industry rewards this type of behavior. Bash George Bush? Get to host an awards show. Screech about global warming or going green? Studios line up to fund your next project.
It's a never ending cycle as long as people keep buying tickets….
But what he produces smells much worse than what a pig produces….
Reality… where the economy sucks and you can here the LEFT singin alll day long….
Hey!! I'm drinking coffee here! I don't want to have to clean up another mess.
Sorry bro….but I can't leave an opening like that just sitting there
Yep, I know. I live in New York. I'm surrounded by them. California may hold the title of the most left leaning state in the union, but New York is a close second.
I spent last week arguing with one friend who tried to use a Krugman column as evidence Obama-economics is working. I explained to him that the entire theory behind government bailouts is the common man is an idiot who can't spend his own money properly, so government has to take it and spend it for them, which means Krugman thinks he's an idiot, and he was applauding him.
Then in standard modern liberal style, he changed the subject to some equally dumb, he'll come back to this one in a week or so, and pretend he's never seen anything I've already shown him.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
LOL!!!
Another liberal debate tactic is when they know their argument has no teeth, they say something so completely over the top outrageous to derail the conversation.
Recently I was into it with a real foaming at the mouth type about Bill O'Reilly. Now I think the guy is a blowhard, but I do believe he's fair on most topics. My opponent called him a fascist, so I asked him to explain it. I refuted his talking points and I could see the Helter Skelter look in his eyes as he realized he was going to lose. So he blurts out, "Well Bill O'Reilly wants people to murder abortion doctors"
I laughed so hard at this I shot beer out of my nose….
Thanks my friend. Do you have his CD 'Art of Motion' from where this song came? Highly recommend it.
I enjoy Open Threads…lots of good things happening.
Take care.
Did you hit with your snot beer?
I have a feeling we'll end up like the Andrea Doria, the captain and crew will be the first to abandon ship.
this is BS….

Well, Alan Ball basically put the books in a blender, but since I'm enjoying both, it's not bothering me. For whatever reason, telepathy doesn't seem to be "magical" in the Sookieverse, so she and Barry the Bellhop (introduced in book 2) can read each other. Trust me, he's actually trimmed some of the stuff from the books, and while he's spending waay too much time with the maenad orgies, I cannot get enough of Eric Northman.
Sotomayor…. what a crock!!!
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_sotomayor_gun_right...
Why didn't she just say it was settled law?
I was shocked to find out recently that his average audience age is quite old. Maybe young people get tired of hearing the same old b.s. over and over again.
that would have been fitting… srsly!
Hey now, there's nobody that can hold a candle to non-Mafioso Italians when it comes to grace under pressure and bravery in the face of disaster…ask the British Army that faced them in North Africa. Who was it here that asked, how do you tell if a guy is an Italian soldier? His armpits are tanned.
The main thing about Moore that bothers me is the blatant hipocracy…he grew up in Auburn Hills, Mich. not exactly the "ghetto", he parades around like he's a "working class stiff", it's typical liberal over compensation and white guilt made into a business. He should just admit his leftist leanings and divest himself of all his money, property and holdings. Get an room in a Detroit tenament and "walk the walk". Ya, FAT CHANCE!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!
My brother is a patient as a Saint school teecher that doesn't want to rock the boat…the rest of us are fire-brand conservatives ready to duke it out at the drop of a hat. Strange how that happens in families. We all generally get along famously though, that's the main thing.
The real leftist wants everybody else to give up their possessions while they keep theirs. Do as I say…..
Just look at Al "I'm going to get rich off the biggest scam in history" Gore….
I'm basically not a "South Park" viewer, BUT…when they decide to make a point that trends off into the political it is usually not a liberal point of view. I've sat there totally shocked at the effective way they smash modern libearlism with out pulling a single punch. The episode where they lambast hybrid cars and the fog of "SMUG" that becomes a national emergency, or their bashing of Paris Hilton, or their free market defense of Starbucks or even Walmart can actually be instructive if you strip away the potty humor.
The thing about my brother is that he always starts sh!t. He'll say something he knows will get me going….
I think I'm going to drive over to his house tonight, hug his wife and their kids, and then punch him right in the face…..
My brother has a wife that does that…luckily they 're 600 miles away right now….my sister and she just got into it during a trip to Disney World..apparently sis-in-law is a emlementary teacher that has a screwed up way of treating her own kids or some such crap, I don't know.
I don't know who said it but, "Nothing is often a good thing to do and always a good thing to say"…..
Thank you Jimmy – Actually, I have downloaded select songs from all three albums, including "Into the Ocean"" off of "Dream Catcher" which is why I instantly recognized your captioned video. I love to listen to Andy while sitting on my back porch with a good Rhone blend and watching the sunset glint off the Little Tennessee River and Unicoi range. I can get mellow in record time.
I missed TMZ yesterday. Damn!
Sotomayor is proof that anyone can get a college degree, even a law degree. Well, I guess Obama is proof of that too.
ahh.. if only there were a few real polar bears out hunting that day.
You're referring to 'The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly', a great movie. I was watching it on T.V. once and that whole act (the trek through the desert to when Wallach spoke that line) was cut out. I was pissed.
I don't get HBO so haven't seen 'em – but love the books, so I think I'll not bother trying for HBO… too disappointing when they mess with something I like.
although recently tried reading the 1st book that 'Bones' was based on – I'll take the TV Tempe hands down over the book. haven't bothered to finish the book yet.
Yes, very good saying. I usually smile and defer, then go out in the back yard and then if I have to, I fake a reson to leave…
Very cool. 'Into the Ocean' is one of my favorites. Like you, it stirs me. When I listen to his music, I can feel the salt air breezes off on Old Cape Cod.
I have a few other favorite pieces of music I'll post from time to time. Where would we be without music?
Yes, it's awesome with a great showdown at the end where they spin a roulette wheel and begin shooting when it stops.
Eli is Greek not Mexican in this one!
Why? So Michael "My Blood Type is RAGU" Moore could eat them??
Where's your heart man!?!?!
I usually swallow my response with a beer chaser….
More open thread stuff: Democratic Sen. Boxer SLAMMED for racial comments!
http://briefingroom.thehill.com/2009/07/16/black-...
The President and CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) tore into Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) Thursday for what he said were "condescending" and "God awful" racial statements at a hearing.
OOF!!!
I actually went backwards, started watching season 1 last year, then found the books (yay eBay) and leapfrogged back and forth. The books aren't exactly heavy lifting, so it really wasn't jarring. The show captures the mood quite well, imho. The acting started of very wobbly and they still haven't fixed those accents, but as long as a fan of the books accepts going in that there will be changes (Tara & Lafayette being the biggest–very minor in the books, expanded and well portrayed onscreen) the show's a lot of fun.

was thinkint he would make an awesome feast for the Polar bears.. but then you are right, he's only give them dissentary.
