Hey, it's an open thread.
This one completely passed by below my radar screen so I checked it out on IMDB. The plot looks like it could either be well handled or, more likely, descend into stereo-typical about rejection of outsiders. Since it is an open thread, and today is Sotomoyor hearing day, I thought I would mention how differently headlines are done because of political bias. During the Alito hearing, typically, it would be "charges made of Alito joining a racist club at Princeton. Here it is more "partisan bickering surrounds Sotomayor hearings." Of course, y'all knew that already.
They only call it "partisan bickering" when they're not participating in it.
Minorities can't be racist even if they say they are.
They can slander and discriminate and kill other races but they are not racist.

That's why we need Hate Crimes legislation, to protect the 13 % of the population which commits 90 % of the crime, from the 83% of the population most often the victims of the crime. This makes sense of course to Obama, his wife, and Attorney General Holder racists and bigots every one.

Normally, I would agree with you, but Sotomayor will be around for years to come. She can't be removed from the bench unless she is impeached.

OK, here's a conspiracy theory for ya… Il Rep Mark Kirk meets privately with Speaker Pelosi. Next day, he is one of eight Republicans in the House to vote for Cap and Trade abomination. 'Tombstone' Burris decides not to run for re-election for Obama's old Senate seat. The most ambitious person in the world, Lisa Madigan (Il Atty Gen) decided not to run for Senate.
Follow us so far? Good.
Kirk gets GOP nomination for Senate. Rahm Emanuel and Dems throw token opposition at Kirk- maybe Chris Kennedy, a legacy who has no local constitutency. Kirk wins, the GOP takes, in bi-partisan fashion Barry's old seat. Big legislation comes through the Senate- cap and trade, socialized medicine- and Kirk rolls with the Dems and makes big show of bi-partisan cooperation.
If true- and we're not saying it is, mind you- it would be nothing short of Machiavellian brilliance…
It's like "The Usual Suspects." if you aren't paying close enough attention, you will miss what really happened. And will not put the blame where it belongs.

My ex-husband the Libertarian on his Facebook status today: "She's not my favorite judge, but Republican attempts to make Judge Sotomayor's confirmation process difficult or embarrassing for her will only further alienate centrists, independents and other moderates. The Republicans would be best served to let her Supreme Court confirmation go through with some grace, and thereby gain valuable political capital."
Don't know if I agree with him or not, but I will say that we (Republicans) do have some other fish to fry (Cap & Trade, National Health Care). Just have to figure out which fish is bigger, eh?
I do agree with you, Joelim! I was relaying strategy I heard. If it were up to me I would take no prisoners in regard to Sotomayor.

I don't know if I agree with him, either, but I think it's worth keeping in mind that if Sonia isn't confirmed, we could end up with someone worse. It's a gamble either way.

Ally – I would like to think we can multi-task, don't you? As far as the Sotomayor hearings go, I do not think we will have the votes to stop her. That said, I want my political leaders to RESPECTFULLY point out why she is not a good fit for the court. I don't think we lose support from centrists for speaking intelligently, only when we merely throw fire balls like our opponents (Biden and Kennedy during Roberts and Alito hearings.)
Cris – we need to fight all things left. I believe we do so with dignity, conviction, and eloquence. I think the Cheney thing is definitely political designed to do what Erickson describes, but also to try and restore some of Pelosi's lost face. Ultimately , it may work against the Dems. Some people kind of got tired of the whole Clinton thing even if he did deserve it. Most people want our major problems worked on. The far left will go nuts over this, but not moderates.

Interesting. Kirk should be vigorously OPPOSED by the national party, removed from the caucus and be forced to run as a Democrat. If he wants to be another Pelosi lapdog, let him do it as a Democrat. It's past time to be playing nice with the press, the Democrats, and RINO's like this pig. He cut and ran on the biggest power grab and ASSAULT on the tax payer EVER! His every financial move should scrutinized, he MUST be making $$$ off this somehow.

Absolutely right, re: being respectful. The problem is, there *are* people on the Right side of the fence who resort to unintelligent name-calling rather than being respectful. That's my concern. And while *we* may be able to multi-task, our Worthy Opponents don't generally seem to have a long enough attention span to stay with us. It could be a good strategy to fight one battle at a time. On the other hand, overwhelming them by fighting on all three fronts may just confuse them enough to guarantee victory. Who knows. Certainly not me.

How come nobody ever mentions that no matter who is in the White House, Congress ALWAYS cleans up at the stock market? Because, they are immune to insider trading laws, and their jobs put them in constant contact with insider information (FDA announcements, FED numbers, housing numbers, IPOs, etc.)
They game the system then laugh at us slagging each other on blogs like this, knowing that no matter what happens, they get rich and stay rich.
With just a few exceptions, Sessions being one of them, the current repub leadership hasn't got the 'nads to treat democrat nominees the way democrats treat repub nominees.

The House is subject to a vote to remain in office every 2 years, as you know. They CAN BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE if we try. The people under Hitler's jackboots "layed back" and accepted it. However Kirk has absolutely "zero" support among small business owners, so his election is not a slam dunk! I've have a friend up in Buffalo Grove (small business owner) who's been hammering away at Kirk since he voted! He's actively working against Kirk. He's got the money to make it count too! We need more people to do this though. People are letting him slide…….

After grad school (which I plan to accerate as much as possible) I plan to camp out at party HQ's until I get into the "machine" and I hope toshake it up. I'm a student but not a naieve kid, I bring 20 plus years working in the private sector with me. I want to break up this "country club" "Oh well" Marquis of Queensbury attitude that prevails in the GOP. We need another Lee Atwater, the "pitbull" the GOP needs again. There are plenty more Wille Hortons out there, let's dig them up and exploit them!

On the subject of Illinois. I just got an email from a someone about a new cigarette tax our lovely boy's and girls in Springfield are voting on tommorrow. It said that they are raising it another $1 and that there appears to be no opposition in Springfield.
Even if you don't smoke (I do) it should piss you off. Every Democrat in this state thinks you can balance the budget with cigarette tax's. They don't seem to get the fact that the higher the prices go, the more people that quit. Yet they continue to to spend this dwindling tax source as if it will never end.
People will pay attention when the proposed alchohol tax comes around though. Wine will see the largest hit and the Liberal Yuppies won't like that at all……….Sorry, got off on a llitle rant, but I am starting to lose faith that this state will ever recover from dim-witted democrats…………

Incumbent parties ALWAYS lose seats in the mid-terms, this needs to be an AVALANCHE odf lost Democratic seats. Set up the gallows, tie the noose, and HANG them with "cap and trade". When the neck snaps, bludgeon them with Obamacare.

The Block that make up the "5" should get on a diet, see their doctors regularly and pray that they outlast Obama.

Am I the only one who is feeling completely helpless in the face of the tidal wave of crooked politics rolling downhill from D.C.? I have been around for almost 78 years and watched one bunch of crooks after another come and go but this bunch makes all previous administrations and Congresses look like Benedictine Monks and Boy Scouts. They are totally unresponsive to the "will of the people" and, like Steny Hoyer, laugh, crack ribs at the idea that they should read what they sign.

Al Sharpton was in one of the spots, it was pairings of "odd couples" that "agree" that climate change is an important issue. It seems that "climate change " is like # 9 down the list of issues Americans care about, I don't what pools Newt was reading that lead him to get "used" that way. When Mayor of San Francisco a brutal sadistic serial killer left the "heat" of L.A and migrated up to San Francisco. The LA police were hot on his trail. He was using the same gun and wearing a very unique brand of athletic shoes when committing his henious slayings. Much of the evidence was secret, know only by law enforcement. UNTIL MRS. BIG MOUTH FEINSTEIN found a TV camera, shot her mouth off and alerted the killer who was watching local news and reading the newspaper about the evidence. Just the way the cycle favored Obama in 2008, let's face it, the GOP could have dug up the corpse of Abe Lincoln and would have lost ( actually McCain campained like a corpse with weekends off and a generally "laize faire" attitude toward his campaign), this cycle favors the GOP. Incumbent parties ALWAYS lose seats in the mid-terms, this needs to be an AVALANCHE odf lost Democratic seats. Set up the gallows, tie the noose, and HANG them with "cap and trade". When the neck snaps, bludgeon them with Obamacare.
