I have a question. Maybe some of you in law enforcement can answer.
In the case of the DC Sniper, (this movie presumeably, i haven't seen it) and our recent killer in SC (location ?), are these types of killers refered to as serial killers? Is this what Son of Sam did? I always pictured serial killers as getting thier hands dirty and being more involved (knives, strangling, etc.).
Are there different categories of serial killers?

I heard an interesting lecture recently by two psychiatrists who compared a serial killer to a mass murderer.
They stated mass murderers intend to die at the end of the slaughter, so make no plans for escape nor do they cover their tracks whereas serial killers have no intention of getting caught. There are also categories "organized" versus "disorganized" — the "organized" ones usually are hard to catch. Your premise that serials get their hands dirty is interesting, however, the DC Sniper and Son of Sam killed with guns, the former from a distance. Interesting question. Maybe there are psyhrinks on this board who can answer.

The serials have a plan that will keep them free to do it over and over again. The spree killer attempts to do the most amount of damage in a relatively short period of time and then takes his own life to deny justice and avoid having to explain himself.
Then again I'm not a professional, but it's a fascinating topic albeit a morbid one.

It's been around since January, but we just came across it recently during the big news from Palin about her plans to resign as governor. C4P, as the site is called, isn't a draft Palin site, though most of the info relates to her politics. And it's not all adoration—it runs much of the national press on Palin that it comes across.
ABC (The All Barack Channel) is in top of things. He was simply looking down to see where he was going. Given how he has handled his first few months in office, we all should know better than that.
To me, a serial killer is someone who kills one person after another (in serial), and a mass murderer kills multiple persons all at once or closely together. Jim Jones was a mass murderer. John Wayne Gacy was a serial killer. In the case of those who tamper with products and cause multiple deaths by poisonings, these (IMHO) would be mass murders because the victims aren't selected.
The organizers/perpetrators of mass murders do not always intend to be caught and held accountable, and some serial killers eventually get lazy and trip themselves up (some say to latent guilt or remorse). This is why I think killing in serial or "in parallel" (mass murder) is a better way to differentiate.
BTW, I am trained in Crime Scene processing, but these are still just my opinions.

Here in the DC areas, we actually refer to the snipers with any one of a number of names–many of which are not printable here. I find it interesting that they are most often referred to as terrorists, rather than either serial killers or mass murderers.

Peggy Noonan has LOST it! If you want your stomach turned, read this latest missive from her as Peggy throws the temper tantrums of all temper tantrums against Palin. It's just one jaw dropping bitchy putdown of Sarah from beginning to end. But the killer is the unbelievable charge Peggy makes – "The elites made her." Yep, you read Peg right. Elitist Peg who's never done anything but sneer, snark, put down, kick and stab Palin's education, dress, religious faith, education, etc. because it is so common now has the appalling nerve to say that Palin owes elitists a thank you???? If Peg were Pinocchio, her nose would be smashing into Argentina by now.

Don't underestimate the potential damage a bullet can do just because of it's size. Jon-Erik Hexum actually managed to kill himself screwing around on the set of "Cover Up" when he shot himself in the head with a blank. You see, the blank contains a little wad of paper to hold the charge in until fired and that little wad of paper came flying out of the gun barrel and hit his head. It just bounced off, didn't penetrate, but the resulting hydrostatic shock pureed his brain.

In his defense, it´s genetic. You don´t always have a say in where your eyes go. Doesn´t matter if you´re happily married or 85. Or so I´ve heard. So I don´t blame Barry for that. But his rotten ideology, rotten methods, rotten pals and rotten policies, they are by choice.
Marlowe, although a cobbler's son, was educated at Cambridge – got an MA (btw, they wanted to deny him an MA due to excessive absences, but Elizabeth's inner circle intervened, since Marlowe was part of Her Majesty's Secret Service). He was a very good Latin translator early on. Theology major. The guy was VERY bright. And he pioneered blank verse in the plays written under his (Marlowe's) name. This is also a major sticking point with me. The Shakespeare plays are largely written in blank verse!
And he could crank out plays quickly. Look at how quickly he wrote the sequel to his smash hit Tamburlaine!
DeVere's dates work against him . . . and whatever he wrote under his own name was marginal.
What Marlowe wrote when he was "alive" was VERY successful and highly regarded.

the sniper's best protections are distance and stealth. A .22 isn't going to provide distance.

In his defense, it´s genetic. You don´t always have a say in where your eyes go. Doesn´t matter if you´re happily married or 85. Or so I´ve heard. So I don´t blame Barry for that. But his rotten ideology, rotten methods, rotten pals and rotten policies, they are by choice.
Marlowe, although a cobbler's son, was educated at Cambridge – got an MA (btw, they wanted to deny him an MA due to excessive absences, but Elizabeth's inner circle intervened, since Marlowe was part of Her Majesty's Secret Service). He was a very good Latin translator early on. Theology major. The guy was VERY bright. And he pioneered blank verse in the plays written under his (Marlowe's) name. This is also a major sticking point with me. The Shakespeare plays are largely written in blank verse!
And he could crank out plays quickly. Look at how quickly he wrote the sequel to his smash hit Tamburlaine!
DeVere's dates work against him . . . and whatever he wrote under his own name was marginal.
What Marlowe wrote when he was "alive" was VERY successful and highly regarded.
