A question I've always had regards how many well-known Hollywood/Nashville types go on USO trips because, unless they're in a country music video (nothing wrong with that, but the country singer playing for the troops is a well-trod path), we never hear about it? In a million years, I would never have guessed that Christian Slater had been on such a tour – reminds me of an old MTV doc about Sheryl Crow going on such a trip with HRC to Bosnia – is there a disconnect between what certain celebs do in their off-time and how it's reported?
I don't play the cynic on this one – anyone who has drawing power who volunteers for such trips should be applauded, but it seems such trips are underreported. If the public at large (myself included) is free to mock celebs as limo-libs, it is only fair that more attention would be paid to them going to do these tours – I don't care about their intentions, the fact that they take the time and effort to go see what's going on and make the day of a people serving the country, that seems good enough for me.
Ergo – seems like it would help everyone – the military, the country, and the celebs – if more of this was reported.
Am I dreaming? Carson Daly supports our troops? Very encouraged by this video. Zachary Levi is terrific, well-grounded, a light in the darkness that can be celebrity.
Thanks you guys. This is the real "hope" we've been waiting for, some appreciation for these amazing people in our military defending our most precious right. I am sure the mothers and families involved in the Troop-a-Thon thank you too. I have two family members in the military and we certainly know what our responsibilities are from the participants to the support system. Please tell their stories.
God Bless.
Love posting this kind of stuff. Wish it was all we had to post.

I wonder if Drew Carrey has ever taken some of the Whose Line? gang with him to the Middle East. I only ask because, when I was taking improv classes last year, I thought to myself, "Man, my cousin (who's in the Navy) would love this!" And I thought, "I'd love to take my fellow improv nuts over there for a show." And since audience participation is encouraged, the soldiers would get to make suggestions, appear on stage, play games like "Moving People" and "Sound FX", etc.
Something to ponder, if I'm lucky enough to make a career out of improv. One step at a time.
Very nice indeed!

Why not one movie? If they support the troops for god sakes make a frickin movie about them. Bunch of Jerks.
Is it just me or does it seem like more Hollywood stars are participating in "support" the troops initiatives only now? I mean, I think Zack is for real but I never once heard anything about Carson Daly supporting the troops before? It seems to me that there are people in this country that are only now patriotic, but where was everyone the last 8 years? It couldn't have been their disdain for W. could it? I mean, I don't care for Obama but my support for the troops is the same today as it was back in 91 when I first joined the service.
Like spoiled children, only now some people in this country want to get involved. Is it because their "messaiah" is now the Commander in Chief? What if a Republican comes back into power? Will they still be patriotic? Putting their personal feelings and ideology aside to support the troops. Heaven forbid if Sarah Palin becomes Commmander in Chief, then what will these people do?
Just wondering……………………
Its only because there man is inn the office. The only reason why. Its sad that our own troops are political.
You're barking up the wrong tree when it comes to these guys. They're the real deal. Kal Penn works for the administration (and it's still cool that he went) but what you say is not the case with the other guys.
Carson Daly used to have a well, not the greatest show. He changed the format from a regular talk show to one where he goes out on the street and it's become actually a great show. It's especially exciting that he had this show. The cool thing about Zac Levi and Joel David Moore is that they both really support the troops and both are on the verge of becoming huge stars. How cool is that!
Since I was actually on this trip, I wanted to comment briefly. I've been friends with Zac and Joel for years and can personally vouch for their love of the troops, regardless of who sits atop the national command authority. A lot goes into making one of these tours happen and both of these guys have been trying for a long time to get over to visit the troops with USO.
It might also be of interest to mention that until two weeks before the departure, we thought we were going to Iraq. USO is a great organization, but at the end of the day, it is the Pentagon that approves the where and when. As you can imagine, it takes a great deal of military support to fly a bunch of Hollywood folk into a war zone. Two weeks before our trip, we learned that the troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan were spread too thin to bring us in. While it would have been enlightening (to say the least) to have seen the war(s), we were none-the-less thrilled to visit the troops in Bahrain and Djibouti. These guys are deployed for long deployments far from home in service to their country and deserve as much support as anyone else in our military. The things they do… If the media cared to report on their lives at all they would never run out of stories.
It may also be worth noting that the guys were very leery of doing Carson about this topic because they didn't want to be seen as exploiting the troops in any way, but Carson seems to have a genuine affection for the military that won them over. Given the climate in Hollywood, it may be worse for their careers to be open about it…
Lastly, to the issue of making a movie that supports the troops, if actors could control what movies get made, they wouldn't have to audition! It certainly may not be true of Hollywood at-large, but I think everyone involved in this trip would be happy to see an end to this Anti-American movie binge.
Jbboreing
Ok great I understand them not wanting to do this or at there own risk. Did you hear the crowd in the audience there scream and clapping for our solders. Maybe its me do people that control the budgets to make movies be this bigoted towards my friend's in the military?
That's a great idea.

jdboreing, it is only one war. It's just being fought on three or four fronts.
And I too am wondering at SOME (not these two in particular) of the Hollyweird types who seem to be falling all over themselves to do USO shows and show love for the troops–now that it's not Bush's war.
I will now be watching "Chuck" and encouraging friends and family to do so as well. When They support our troops (without the "I support the troops but not their mission" idiocy from some of the left) with personal visits that give our soldiers brief moments of escape from the job they do with honor and bravery, then I'll make sure to support Them by watching their series, buying their music, going to their movies. What a concept.
I really appreciated the fact that Carson put out there that we non Hollywood types can help the USO.
I volunteer at a USO center at a major airport. Basically we are a 'red carpet club' for members of the military and their families. It's a great experience to be able to be a friendly face for them and to be able to say thank you. I highly recommend volunteering with the USO if anyone ever gets a chance.
More than once a celebrity has just stopped by to say hello to whomever is at the USO. It's really wonderful because they aren't doing it for PR. They were just going through the airport, saw the USO and figured that they should stop by and say hello.
Usually it's people who have done a USO tour and they always say how wonderful the experience was and that they can't wait to go again. I think if more celebrities went on USO tours we would see a very different presentation of the military in Hollywood.
CBK, In my experience, working at a Children's Hospital, there are Hollywood types that do it for publicity, and those that do it because they just want to. Our PR dept wants photo-ops of every high profile visitor, for future fund raising. Those there for the publicity comply with endless photos, those there for personal heartfelt reasons often refuse. And those that have refused are huge names that could have garnered enormous *do-good* points, but, that was not the purpose of their visit. I make it a point to patronize their other ventures as a result.
Now the cynic in me wants to know why this bunch didn't fly into the "Sniper Fire Zones", just like Hilary did.
"It may also be worth noting that the guys were very leery of doing Carson about this topic because they didn't want to be seen as exploiting the troops in any way, but Carson seems to have a genuine affection for the military that won them over."
This is great news. First of all, it's nice to hear Hollywood-types that feel this way about the troops. Second, it's great to hear that they don't want to exploit our military to make themselves look good.
It's almost like these guys are the real deal.
To add to Liberty's post right above me-
Not only can you donate your time and money. I make sure to involve myself with two friends who have served. Remembering to support people who have returned from active duty (and their families) is a big help. I have been humbled by the sincere "thank you's" when I've put myself out there`its obviously the right thing to do. Remember holidays, b'days, babysit, help w/ doctor appts.
Carson Daly–all grown up!!! Great!!!
Unfortunately, I think "Chuck" jumped the shark with their last season finale. Prior to that, it had been an entertaining show.
However, as long as Yvonne Strahovski stays with the cast, I'll continue to watch.
It is good to hear that Zac Levi has a genuine affection toward our military folk.
Here's something else all of you could do:
Call your local V.A. Hospital and speak with the "Voluntary Services" staff. You can donate your time there, and there is usually a short list of supplies and materials they are looking for in the form of donations.
"Voluntary Services" provides non-funded support for our hospitalized veterans in a variety of ways.
I guess I am confused. When Bush was President, somehow our troops were not worthy. Their funerals were protested and I didn't see any Hollywood types stepping forward. Now Obama is President and they are all over it. What gives? Don't get me wrong. I am so very happy that they are getting the praise they deserve, my daughter is a Marine, but I'm just wondering.
Just the type of stuff I REALLY LOVE SEEING!!!!
Great piece! Carson Daly is a patriot…who knew! Good on the actors who did the work. And thanks for the info jdboreing. Some other organizations where our support can be given are opgratitude.com and anysolder.com.
This really is great but Zack (Love Chuck, best "new" show on TV that isn't Deadliest Warrior) if you're reading this shave that beard, it looks like you stapled a tabby to your grill.
I love Zachari Levi, love CHUCK! And so great to see this. And fyi Chuck is probably the most right-leaning, pro-American show on TV. Watch it, tell your friends about it — it's great fun!
I suspect The Underling may be right that these guys are the real deal, but RonaldWR is not off to wonder. I recall in 1993 how Ron Silver commented on Clinton's Inauguration Day how the planes flying overhead were now "our" planes (as opposed to Reagan's or Republicans' I suppose). (Silver, of course, later became a 9/11 conservative.) Still, even if the motivations for such celebrities is a bit off, I think it's a good thing because it still means supporting the troops when they still need it and it might just allow the celebrities to have their eyes opened a bit.
I'm with Old Tom on this. I suppose there didn't seem to be much more the writers could do with the Buy More set up, but I worry that the conspiracy is going to get too complex to make any sense (see Alias, Heroes, etc.). Still, I'll keep an open mind, and I too like the cast (and not just Strahovski!).
Wileygrl3, you should certainly watch the first two seasons of Chuck. Definitely good stuff.
Wow…this was great….!!!
As one of those who would enjoy your idea, I say pursue it. I'd love to have something to laugh at while deployed!!!
Jake, I have no data whatsoever to support this, but I think the difference is that now that the media and the White House are of the same party, the media doesn't feel "wrong" to report this. In my limited experience, I've been surprised at how many otherwise looney Hollywood types go on USO tours or support the troops in other ways. Anyone remember Scarlet Johansson's tour? That was during Bush's term, and she was pointedly and obnoxiously anti-Bush.
Anyway, just my $0.02 worth.
This is encouraging to see some of young Hollywood supporting the troops, even Kal Penn. Now that he is in his White House job and can see how the 0bama administration works first hand, I wonder if he will wake up and put down the kool-aid.
"Chuck" is the best show on NBC. (The only show I watch on the Obama Network besides sporting events the network broadcasts.) Great job Zach & co. on the USO tour. "Chuck" is the most underrated show on TV. Zach along with Adam Baldwin and the rest of the cast are great. I hope you like it.
Old Tom & mrpither: I too felt the show has jumped the shark with the ending (understandable with the show almost being cancelled) , but we shall see come March 2010 when the show returns. The only problem I have with the show is the "will they/won't they" storyline between Chuck and Sarah has run its course. There should've been a resolution with their romance already. I hear that Chuck, Sarah, and Casey are going to be working at a Subway next season. (Ugh.) I hope not.
I could tell from "Chuck" that Zachary Levi had a good head on his shoulders, especially from his interactions with Adam Baldwin. Zach also popped up in "An American Carol", so, you know.
I thank the guys for going over there to see people deployed there. I only have two problems with this stuff as a Ret. Marine. One, why is it now a 'cool' thing to support the troops now that Obama is in office. Theres been Grandmas and Grandpops and ordinary people doing this stuff long before these guys went there. Raising funds, helping people out, meeting them at airports and just saying thanks to someone serving. Two, these USO tours that some Hollywood types do are shit anyway. I never seen anyone the 3 times I've been in Iraq. They are afraid to come out to our FOBs. They all goto and stay in super bases with the REMFs.
