As an open thread, I would like to mention a new show airing it's third episode tonight called "Hawthorne" starring Jada Pinkett Smith. I find this to be a wonderful show and very positive; much more so than HBO's "Nurse Jackie." I urge BH readers to give it a try.
USA Today (yeah I know) ripped it. I have not yet seen it.
The reply notifier worked last night. So if it is working Hooray for Intense debate.
Did anyone catch the "President Evil Eye" article on Drudge?
Now, that's funny
I saw that, it must run in the family, check this one out. http://twitpic.com/8uf0v
Oh, ECK! I can feel them BURNING INTO MY SOUL!!!!!!
and not in a good way.
I'm telling you, one of these days, after Cap & Tax runs us into the ground and Obama has a death grip on our country, both he and his wife are gonna pull off their Human Suits and confirm they are from another planet……
They are remaking "V" for. Coincidence?
creepy…..
Mrs. Obama's suit isn't very convincing….
Love, love, LOVE "Halloween." It's in my "top five" of scary movies. "Halloween (original)," "Dawn of the Dead (1978)," "Horror of Dracula," "Psycho," "Event Horizon."
Yeah Micheal Myers is my all time favorite movie slasher, hands down.
I think it is the Shatner mask.
I actually watched those movies with my dad as a kid. The only evidence of child abuse I can recall, well except for early bed times and a spanking for peeing on the rug. but apparently i digress…
I'm sure they're planning their escape to some mansion in an exotic locale somewhere. Maybe Kenya?
BTW, ebay took down that sale again for obamalama ding dongs birth certificate. Last I looked it was over 111K I don't understand how they could have taken it down this time since he wasn't actually selling the BC, he was only selling a dissertation and giving the bc for free.
lol
I can remember my mom and dad watching this one night. I was supposed to be in bed but I snuck to the bottom of the stairs to see what they were watching. I didn't get a clear look, but the music was clear enough to give me nightmares.
And I agree about Event Horizon, one of my faves and totally under-rated.
Either that or the mothership will come pick them up….
One can only hope.
Meh… never could get into Halloween… I am more of a psycho thriller movie fan than a slasher movie fan…. slasher movies just make me laugh… Crap, I laughed hysterically at Carrie (the orginal Sissy Specek one, in case they remade it and I didn't know)
I'm a wuss, I hate ALL of these types of movies.
The ones that SHOULD scare me, true crime, don't.
Is that the pic of Michelle giving the evil eye to Carla Bruni? I can't look at it because I am at work and it was blocked…. now that is an evil eye if I have ever seen one…
The Obama's can give the evil eye all they want but contrary to their belief, the world does not revolve around them and their plans and I wish our Congress would have the balls to stand up to him.. but friking Peloisi and Reid are wrapped around his little finger… :/
Lord, I hope it's soon too… :/
Like in Mars Attacks… *lol* Maybe Slim Whitman will solve our problem…
Event Horizon kind of ambushed me. I thought it was a straight up sci-fi movie, then it turned into a really vicious horror movie.
I don't like the slasher movies either anymore. I used to love them when I was much younger and they were cranking out these things 5 ata time for every holiday (they even made a slasher movie for Mother's Day!!!).
I need a better story now, and a couple horror movies that stand the test of time are Alien and John Carpenter's The Thing. Those 2 still scare the crap out of me…..
why are you a hater? The poor girl with the crazy religious mom who couldn't get in to Professor X's school for gifted children, gets blood poured on her by the cool kids. I do think she took appropriate action in the end though.
good times.
Well of course eBay took it down, it's an obvious fraud. Everyone knows BHO is a divine gift and has no such documentation.
lol..I break out into a cold sweat and get a flip floppy stomach if I watch any slasher films.
Reid and Pelosi have record low approval ratings, I know it's asking for a lot but maybe the voters in CA and NV will come to their senses and send these 2 packing.
And while they're at it maybe they could send Feinstein and Boxer with them….
Was it actually Slim Whitman? It seems any type of country music works on most liberals. Maybe if we play some banjos, they will run away leave us alone. And if they don't, maybe their heads will explode.
Maybe that's why I like country music so much… it keeps the raving liberals at bay… but yeah, I am pretty sure it was actually Slim Whitman… I know that is how it was played in the movie..
Slasher movies are comical these days. It's the movies that show killing that could be real that make me turn my head. Example: Saving Private Ryan, the scene where the Nazi shoves a knife slowly into the chest of the GI and the dialogue between them as it was happening.
THAT makes me change the channel…..
But a big doofus with a hockey mask? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!
God, I hope so… unfortunately though they represent one of the most liberal distracts in their State, let alone in the Country… But even if they could get a different Democrat in there I would be happy.
I agree about slasher flicks. I think one of my favorites has to be Jason in Space. At least he had some more creative ways to kill teenagers having sex because it was in space. About the only thing that defines a slasher flick for me is how creative they are in the kills, and let's face it, you can only slash a person in so many ways.
Yeah I hear that… I don't remember that part in Saving Pvt. Ryan though… but to be honest that is a movie I actually have to decide to watch and not just go "hm, well this looks good today"…
But yeah, a guy running around with a chainsaw is funny to me too…
As long as they are not foaming at the mouth like the unholy trinity they have in there now I'd be happy.
I'm not holding my breath though…..
*lol* I'm not being a hater… but it's so unreal that it actually makes me laugh… and the faces "Carrie" makes when she is mentally closing the doors and windows so her classmates can't escape… is just so funny….
Weightless sex? Bring on the Space Tourism!
Hey honey I found a vacation package. It's all inclusive…
Well I will have to watch it then…. is it on hulu so I can watch the other episodes?
Buckwheat – don't know what USA Today said since I never read it, but let me give you a little more of my thoughts on this show.
There have only been 2 episodes thus far so it's still way too early to tell. As much as I dislike Ted Turner individually and politically, he has shown a great commitment to historical productions such as Gettysburg and Andersonville.
More recently, he has shown a willingness to do series with over 40 female leads (initially for Georgia actresses.) The first, "The Closer" with Kyra Sedgewick, has been great. The second, with Holly Hunter, has been a little too over the top for me. It seems to shout, "hey look at me, I'm still hot cuz I can afford a personal trainer and play a female homicide detective who drives a Porsche, drinks like a fish, and kick the stuffing out of big tough looking bad guys.
Now comes Jada Pinkett Smith playing a widow with a teen daughter who is the head nurse in an E.R. Unlike, Nurse Jackie, she doesn't take pills, use blue language, or jump the bones of the doctor. Hawthorne is what it is, series television. This is something I can actually enjoy watching with my wife. Maybe I am just an old conservative fuddy duddy, but I kind of like that.
K – I wish I could tell you, but I don't know what hulu is. It comes on 9:00 p.m. on TNT. Maybe they have a website where you could check out the first two episodes.
The scene is toward the end of the movie, and trust me, you'll know it when you see it….
One problem I always had with the slasher movies is that no one ever had a gun. People always grabbed a flashlight instead of dad's hunting rifle…..
I didn't mind all the running around and girls falling and tripping to get away from some weirdo as much as I did all of the blood. I swear they always make it look like more then 8 pints in those movies. ((((shiver))))
I'm well on my way to fuddy duddy-dom. I appreciate being able to watch something that doesn't get me all worked up. I know my wife will. I will try to catch it.
On the gruesome meter, Pesci and his brother in the cornfield at the end of "Casino" tops just about anything I've seen in a slasher flick..
It's one of the reasons I'm against aluminum bats…
Yeah that's pretty disturbing….
See that's the stuff that aggravates the crap out of me. A maniac is chasing you, trying hack you into little pieces and you fall?? Repeatedly?? It made me root for the slasher….
The blood and other stuff was so over the top it was comical to me.
Hank Scorpio
She has a neck like E.T…………..
LOL, but wasn't ET friendly??
She looks like she's a brain-eater…..
The original Halloween is my favorite John Carpenter movie. The Rob Zombie remake is a travesty.
Yes, indeed, there was a tv remake to Carrie a couple of years ago. Don't worry. You didn't miss much.
Oh.. it's hulu.com… a website where you can watch TV shows and movies… it's a great place to catch up some past episodes… it's a free website where you have to suffer through 3-6 (depending on length of show) commercials that are about 30 seconds each. They are still growing their collection so some shows aren't posted on there and some are..
so don't waste my time?
Most slasher movies have a tendency to be rather insipid, but the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was a terrrific movie. Surprisingly enough, it didn't have a lot of gore. Friday the 13th, on the other hand, was a very stupid movie.
Definitely not unless you're into a crude and vulgar white-trash mess.
Unless travesties are your thing.
My favorite Carpenter movie is The Thing.
I love Hulu. They've had some stuff on there that I haven't seen in years — like the Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea tv series.
My favorite Carpenter movie is Prince of Darkness. . . or The Fog.
That is pretty good for a remake. I always love Kurt Russell as the anti-hero.
I'm still waiting for the evidence of Rob Zombie's genius. I thought house of 1000 Corpses, was predictable and weak. I haven't seen the devils rejects stuff. Maybe i am older than the target audience.
Of course, movies where the bad guy jumps out at you are lame after the first viewing, because there is no suspense. I like the build up and can't stand the reliance on the startling or the gory. I telnd to watch PG-13 because they have to try harder, and you get a better product in many cases.
Carpenter did 3 "End of the World" type movies. The Thing, Prince of Darkness, and a really weird one The Mouth of Madness with Sam Neil.
All 3 are really good, but The Thing still keeps me up at night.
I don't know. I think the sex scene between Sharon Stone and Joe Pesci was far more disturbing.
The best 5/4 time movie theme music ever.
It actually follows the book more closely "Who Goes There" By John W. Campbell. I love the original too, but Carpenter captured the whole isolation and impending doom aspect perfectly. No romance between any characters (unless you count Clark and the dogs…), no social commentary.
Just a bunch of guys stuck in a nightmare in the middle of nowhere.
They actually have a "Thingfest" every year. http://www.outpost31.com
You make a valid point, and thanks for that visual….
Aw, the poor dogs. That's where I get squeamish watching a movie.
You're going to have a long wait. I don't know which is worse, his music or his movies. At least, his songs are shorter.
I like almost all of his movie — have them all on DVD. For some reason, PoD really hit me and I don't know why. I love the Thing, but it doesn't frighten me at all. I almost see it as more science fiction. Mouth was good, but is not my favorite.
Zombie relies on white-trash vulgarity way too much. Devil's Rejects was a shallow, lame-ass attempt at being shocking. You can tell when he's run out of story to tell because he substitutes story with torture and violence so over the top that it makes you either turn away or leave.
How he was allowed to trash an iconic movie with his vulgarity is beyond me…
I've been censored twice….Third times a charm aye?
Maybe she was the inspiration for the movie "Predator" with Arnie Swarzangiggle….
Did anyone see the HBO documentary, "Shouting Fire: Stories From the Edge of Free Speech". It was interesting and extremely disappointing at the same time. Interesting in hearing some of the key elements of free speech articulated quite well and the quality of interviewees was solid, including David Horowitz and Judge Posner. It was disappointing in that it was another wasted opportunity to explore free speech from all sides. It was a 90 min doc and I would estimate 75-80 min were devoted to issues related to the Iraq War (all liberal) and 5-10 combined on two other subjects, the Skokie, Ill Nazi march case from the 70's and the Poway, CA student who tried to wear bible verses on a tee-shirt. while they provided contrasting viewpoints on the Poway case, there were no such contrasts when discussing the Pentagon Papers or the protesters rounded up during the 2004 GOP convention in NYC. These were taken in whole; the only interviews of those who supported the left or those providing facts. Another case where a great opportunity to open a dialogue on important issues was wasted in order to cement the liberal viewpoint.
Or Alien….
Carpenter always manages to tell a great story. I always want to know more. Where did the alien come from? Why was satan a liquid in a jug in the basement of a church?
Another Carolyn
With you on that………I still haven't watched "I Am Legend" because someone told me the dog get's killed in the movie. I know, what a wuss, but I lost one of mine recently to cancer so I can't even make it throught the Anti-Cruelty Society commercials……….Ain't I just the ray of sunshine today?
Besides everyone said "I Am Legend" was horrible. Loved the cheesy "Omega Man" though…….
I agree completely. I love horror movies, but I am so sick of horror movies that rely on shock and ignore story. You have to be entertained between the shocks and the only way to get true horror is to tell a story that gets under people's skins. Carpenter is good at that.
I thought the effects were amazing — especially for a lowish budget movie without the aid of all the CGI that is supposed to be so good today (but looks cartoony to me).
We don't need the deluxe version though … This one looks the same except it's half as expensive. I wonder why that is … Oh I see, it's a one way trip.
A mostly one sided documentary about free speech. How ironic.
Love that movie. Siguorney Weaver was a great reluctant action hero in that movie……..
I don't know though. I think both examples might be wrong. Both of those creatures appeared to have intelligence. Not so much for Mrs. Obambi….
Don't get me started on I Am Legend. I love Richard Matheson's book and I'm still waiting for a faithful movie version of it. I do like The Omega Man. How can I not? It's Chuck Heston kicking the crap out of the bad guys, but it's not I Am Legend.
I Am Legend is a movie of missed opportunities. They hinted at the creatures becoming more human and did nothing with it. They ignored the entire undercurrent from the originals (like the Vincent Price version) that the sole human left was seen as the monster by creatures. AND, they added an unbelievable happy ending. Don't waste your time.
Agreed, Andrew. CGI seems to have become a crutch for too many filmmakers. I'd rather see a movie with a first rate script and less than perfect special effects than the CGI extravaganzas that are polluting the theaters these days.
What kills me is the impulse to always run up the stairs. Why would you run up the stairs?
Or then there's that preoccupation with needing to go back and look to see if whatever it was is really gone … Hello?! Keep going …
Alien is the best. One of my favorite movies ever. Poor Parker. All he wanted to do was go home and party. They should have listened to him.
They always look back and then trip on something don't they? Just run! Don't look back you idiot! Run………..I guess if they did that though no one would die and it would become a Disney movie……………
Thank's for the heads up. Out of the Netflix queue with you……..
cause that's where all jugs of liquid evil are kept; in the basement.
Do you actually get a good picture quality? I gave up on it because I always got horrible video with Hulu, yet I get perfect video when streaming Netflix on the same computer.
+1 for Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea……..
maybe the Blob then….
Indeed, Professor X had to fill a racial quota and white girls from religious familys (albeit nutty family) weren't on the approved list.
it's even funnier when it's a children's doll running around with a kitchen knife.
They always ignore the voice of reason…..
hmmm….go home and party or stay on creepy planet and get killed by freaky alien….decisions decisions…..
Well my dad used keep his in the liquor cabinet….but that's another thread…..
oooo there goes my appetite for lunch.
And it goes beyond shock, movies like Devil's Rejects and Hostel and Touristas don't just shock. They are so devoid of any real substance, in order to justify their very existence they vomit forth visuals that are so disturbing you start to wonder why you even bought the movie ticket.
Gore and violence just for the sake of being gory and violent do not a movie make.
I thought they were kept in Pamela Anderson's shirt?
The CGI in I Am Legend absolutely ruined it for me. Practical effects still out-class CGI. You hit the nail on the head regarding the missed opportunities. The whole point was that the Neville character was the stuff of vampire nightmares.
That movie just felt like an excuse to put Will Smith in another gigantic scale movie.
well they could always make the slasher run faster…..
Yeah, what was that about????
Don't you just punt it out the window??
Well coming from the network that carries that complete tool Bill Maher I'm not surprised….
We have a winner!
Isn't Rob Zombie sort of a Conservative guy? Thought I had heard that about him
That would be great, but he still makes bad movies…..
