Governor Palin Accepts Letterman’s Apology
by Big HollywoodFrom Fox News:
Sarah Palin has accepted comedian David Letterman’s apology made during Monday night’s broadcast of “The Late Show” for crude jokes made about her and her teen daughters last week.
In a statement to FOXNews.com early Tuesday, the Alaska governor said, “Of course it’s accepted on behalf of young women, like my daughters, who hope men who ‘joke’ about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve.”
“Letterman certainly has the right to ‘joke’ about whatever he wants to, and thankfully we have the right to express our reaction,” Palin said. “This is all thanks to our U.S. Military women and men putting their lives on the line for us to secure America’s Right to Free Speech – in this case, may that right be used to promote equality and respect.”

If Palin accepts it then it should be over. He shouldn't be fired (Imus shouldn't have been either). I support his right to make a complete ass of himself.
Doesn't CBS have a Standards and Practices department? I don't know if Letterman should be fired for his "joke" about Gov. Palin's daughter, but maybe Letterman, Worldwide Pants (his production company) and his staff ought to refamiliarize themselves with Standards and Practices. And Standards and Practices ought to maybe update itself if it hasn't done so lately to at least put the brakes on "jokes" like that. Ultimately, Letterman could have rejected reading that particular cue card with that "joke" on it and moved on to the next cue card.
Palin has class.
Letterman's an ass.
She accepted ? Awesome. EVERYONE SHUT THE HELL UP NOW!
I agree with this. I think Letterman should be fired for being unfunny, but not this. I think Pailn had every right to be pissed, and we had every right to bash Letterman. But no way does this rise to the level of termination.
But Letterman sucks so hard, I can't believe he is still on the air. That show from South Park with the close ups of animals would be more entertaining.
Palin's right to move on from this, but I'm hoping the grassroots pressure on Letterman and CBS continues, if only to make it plain that conservatives are through taking partisan cheapshots like this from the left. Don Imus (no conservative, he) apologized for his offhand but crude on-air comment about the Rutgers Womens' Basketball team, and the zealots demanding his head on a platter only got louder.
I will not purchase any products or services that advertise on the David Letterman show.
Had he joked about President Obama daughters being raped at a NY baseball game, and said that President Obama wife dresses like a " slutty stewardess" , CBS work have fired David Letterman and the MSM would not support him
PS it took David Letterman a week to make an apology, shame on him.shame on CBS,
Amazes me that people can rip conservative women without nary a peep. If the woman isn't a conservative then it is hands off. What Letterman in relation to Palin was way worse than what Imus said. Yet because Palin is a conservative it is accepted.
Letterman needs to go.
As El Indio said in FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE: "It's done now….prepare to get out of here."
Of course she accepted, SHE has class.
Have you seen the latest FRUMPY picture of michelle on the front page of Drudge? If ONLY she DID dress like a slutty stewardess, what an improvement that would be. Of course the media is calling her a fashion icon, I call her a fashion failure.
We won.
We are keeping the pressure

Keep the boycott
Yeah, keep fighting. Have fun with that.
Smart move by Palin to end the battle here, because she's now got Letterman in a position where he really, really, really wants to hit back at her and her family, but won't dare touch it unless there is some new political/family problem that comes up.
Letterman apologized not Because he Wanted to but because he Had to. He still Stinks. While Sarah Palin is still a Lady and a Class Act. This Round goes to the Good Guys in other words We The People.
Yep, we can move on now. Great. We can move on just as fast as those moved on with Imus. Or do we have to move faster?
What? No sensitivity training? No gender consultants to review any future jokes about women? No self-appointed experts to review the "diversity" of the writing staff? How about a donation from Letterman to a woman's shelter or something. C'mon now. What price is CBS paying? Where's the Al Sharpton for women's rights making a fuss?
I guess conservatives are too classy to play the victim and generally they use their time for more productive endeavours.
This is another example of the strength of public pressure, sycophants like Letterman are tuff until it affects their pockets. He only apologized because he had to, not because he meant it IMO. This will not be the end of the attacks on Sarah Palin and her family, she must be destroyed as she’s a threat to the hive.
No!
Okay!
By "evolve," do you mean microevolution or macroevolution?
Letterman's apology still looks like a non-apology to me…"perception"…"intent"…"I thought it was the 18-year-old daughter"…it's the classic "I'm sorry you misunderstood me" apology, not an "oh wow, that was totally inappropriate…I can't believe I said that, and what's more, since we tape the show, I can't believe given the opportunity that I didn't have my producers edit it out before broadcast." That said, I agree that we should leave this carcass by the side of the road where it belongs and keep driving toward our destination.
I love Governor Palin's response. God bless her.

Michelle Malkin said exactly what I was thinking: it's not enough of an apology. It's all "you guys misunderstood, I was taken out of context because I didn't mean the underage kid, etc." when it would be an awful thing to say in context. Letterman is hardly the person to be bashing anyone for an unwed pregnancy, either. Palin should have been protesting about the use of politicians' family's personal lives for partisan late night fodder, not about teenage girls' self-image.
Agreed. It's not an apology to the Palins. It's Letterman begging his advertisers not to abandon his show.
Subservient liberal parasites are scared of this incredible lady. We as conservatives need to keep the pressure on, keep your money in your pocket, boycott!
Your right this is not the end of attacks on Sarah Palin but the ice is a little thinner under the feet of her attackers
Agreed! However comedy is subjective and there is a line that should not be crossed, and that’s anybody’s children specifically. Letterman’s shtick has grown one sided and subsequently boring. George Carlin was a devoted liberal, but he was an equal opportunity offender, nothing was sacred.
I thought Palin's focus on self-image was brilliant. It makes it easier for those outside the conservative camp to relate.
For example, my family and I recently visited my mother, who was upset with Letterman's vile crack against Willow Palin. Soon, one of my mom's neighbors stopped by for a visit and joined in the discussion. The neighbor was even harsher in her criticism of Letterman than my mother.
Far Left liberals would be shocked by these comments since my mother and her neighbor don't fit the stereotypes. They are, in fact, Black Democrats who voted for Obama. Yet, even they can empathize with Palin's anger over having one's child unjustly attacked . (My mother's neighbor can really relate to Gov. Palin since she has all daughters and a granddaughter.)
In short, Palin smartly reframed the debate, thus making Letterman look like the pervert he is.
when we bring affirmative action into anything, we all suffer.
He apologized – why can't we just let it go. To do otherwise makes convervatives look vindictive and petty. I'm no Letterman fan, but we need to rise above this.
Yeah, not a good idea to piss the ladies off. I know my wife and daughter didn’t dig Letterman’s misogynist attempt at humor, and let his sponsors hear about it in no uncertain terms. Piss the ladies off and the money dries up, dumb, but what do you expect from a liberal.
Well stated Palin! I agree with what you said 100%. It's time to make a real change. Now let's get this other smut off the air that uses famous people's "likeness" in an attempt at bathroom humor. I, of course, am talking about the despicable empire of Larry Flynn who put out such diariha as "Who's Nailin Palin" and "Who's Nailin Palin 2". In my hotel this weekend they had this as a choice to watch. What a disgusting piece of garbage. I did not notice this "film" myself since I rarely use the service of movies in the hotel but a colleague of mine pointed it out and was as disgusted as I am. Palin, take it back to the liberals and tell them to shove their 'free speech' arguments up their collective perverted hypocritical throats. Both of us have complained about the filth the hotel.
GOOD THING MY NAME ISN'T TODD PALIN>>>>>because right now that *GAP* between Letterman's front teeth would've expanded to the size of the Grand Canyon (and I'd be in the hospital mending my broken knuckles).
Personally, as much as I detest The Gap-toothed One, I am ready for this issue to be put to bed. The joke was insulting. I think Palin was right in her aggressive response. However, I fear she may have over-played it: "It would be wise to keep Willow away from him." (my paraphrase) I think that was a bit over the top. But, who knows what I would have said if it had been my 8-year old girl.
But… whatever the particulars of this episode… That Has-been late-night talk show host is a jerk, and I'm generally sick of the across-the-board coarsening of our culture. Pretty much anything the main-stream entertainment industry puts out… I reflexively do NOT want my daughter to see/watch/hear it. So, I'll support anything that gives a black-eye to the whole freakin' industry.
That being said… did anyone else get the feeling that he doesn't actually regret making the coarse joke? Instead, he just regrets that he botched the coarse joke?
The ol' "I'm sorry you misunderstood" apology.
"I'm sorry that the perception was bad."
"I'm sorry that I look like a creep."
"I'm sorry that you are so sensitive about something that your judgment about my comedic genius has been tinted."
Ugh… Let's keep turning the channel whenever his face appears. (And, the myriad like him.)
Eagerly awaiting the New Hollywood.
Letterman would be well advised to understand that he's morphed into making jokes that are mean-spirited, instead of funny. the laughs he gets are only from those who share his disdain for the butt of the joke. that's not the same thing as humor. for example, i could make a crude joke about Osama Bin Laden getting an STD from a goat. people would laugh, not because the joke is funny, but because the butt of the joke is widely abhored. if i told the exact same joke to the exact same people about Nelson Mandela, nobody would laugh. it's not politically correct to make jokes about Mandela. in this case, the so-called joke is not a joke at all… and that's what Letterman needs to understand. much of what passes for humor in his show has become that sort of stuff. mocking or belittling a person and assuming that the audience is on his side. that's easy when its Bin Laden. it's not when its Palin. maybe Letterman doesn't know a single person who has anything nice to say about Palin and maybe that led him to think that his "joke" would be well-received, but the reality is that NYC is an echo chamber for liberalism. what plays well to an audience of liberals there will not play well to the rest of the country. he should learn the lesson, stop making mean-spirited "jokes" aimed at political opponents, and go back to crafting jokes that are funny because they are funny, and not because the butt of the joke is somebody he thinks his audience doesn't like.
I guess no one knows what to make of Tehran right now since we're still talking about that imbicile Letterjerk and no mention of the dictatorship's completion or dissolution in Iran. Tweeter seems to be the only place saying anything and even the libs are all over it..
FWIW, here's my prediction: Tehran will look just like Pyongyang on Google Earth in about 1 week. That is to say; EMPTY and with a few new hillsides on the outskirts of town where none exist today.
I think CBS should make Letterman stand on the street and catch and big falling watermelon from two stories up. Let Sarah pick the watermelon, and Bristol and the whole family can drop it together.
Then he'll be back to being funny.
From Letterman's "apology":
"I thought I was telling the joke about the older daughter being at Yankee Stadium."
"I had no idea that anybody was at the ball game except the governor, who was with Rudy Giuliani."
Remember that lie above and beyond anything else Letterman has ever said or done.
The fact that he was coerced by his bosses into this "apology" (a full week after the fact) is just static.
Palin is indeed a great American and a true class act.
You said it. Letterman did NOT apologize, he only pointed out that 'his intentions' were misunderstood and he apologized that we the audience didn't get his real intention, and that was his fault.
What could his 'real intention' have been? Of course he should have CHECKED to see which daughter was at the game if he really had any qualms about doing that joke and being 'misunderstood' in that way, the 14 vs 18 yr old.
But what ELSE could he have meant? To me, it was a laughing happy attempt to insult, degrade, crap on Sarah's reputation… it was happy assassination. He didn't care about the daughter, he was trying to damage Sarah's rep. Political meanness. there is no GOOD 'intention' that gets him off the hook on this.
If I'm Todd, I'm with the other guy.. I'm doing a quick operation on Dave's gap between his teeth… the "shove them all down his throat so far he's crapping teeth for months" treatment… It's been known to change attitudes before.
I'm with you Sonny… this may be over between Governor Palin and David Letterman (and ergo, the public furor will die down, unfortunately).. but where are all the calls for the "sensitivity!" and "feelings"?
No, you would be in prison on felony assault charges…
No amount of "wrongdoing" is worth answering with physical violence, and frankly in this case there was NO wrongdoing. Dave called it as he saw it, the Republicans snatched onto this to make political hay (and failed), and Palin was once again shown to be a hypocrite and loser. The only way to make this even more Jerry Springer-esque would be to, as you say, make the *GAP* between Letterman's front teeth expand with your fist.
I am sure Todd thinks like a caveman too Joe, but fortunately for him he is on a tight enough of a leash to not make the white-trash moves he would be prone to if he weren't.
As a Republican, I think Palin and all of her supporters took this too far. Yes, the joke was in bad taste, but he clearly thought it was aimed at Bristol, not Willow. He's not a demented perv and casting him as such just doesn't fly with the vast majority of people, both right and left. She should have accepted the first apology and didn't milk it. It makes her look like an opportunist. The bottom line on Sarah is that she will forever have an exceedingly difficult time overcoming her inability to answer the simple questions she bombed in her Gibson and Couric interviews. Somehow she needs to convince the majority of everyday folks that she truly is intelligent and does actually read a few national newspapers on a regular basis, which most people believe she clearly did not before McCain picked her. She really, really set herself back by not simply answering those questions honestly. It makes people ask "Isn't there some other female conservative without her negative track record to run?"
Personally, as much as I detest The Gap-toothed One, I am ready for this issue to be put to bed
Define "Issue" here CJ… 1) This specific instance? Okay, I can agree there.
2) The overall allowance of leftist-leaning people to be able to say whatever nasty "jokes" they want, while people on the right are crucified for passing comments? not even close…
Hollywood and TVLand want conservatives to just "give in"… so they can get away with the next cheap shot… "Oooh, me sorry for that! And now for my next cheap shot…"… "oops, sorry for that.. and now for my next cheap shot!"… "oops sorry for that… " rinse and repeat?
Letterman is losing advertising sponsors. Fire Letterman now! I will boycott all products advertised on Letterman.
Even reading her words, you can still tell she's a moron. And still pushing her hate agenda. When did reps start standing up for women? I'm pretty sure they've been oppressing them since the country was formed.
It's OK with me that the Palin's accepted his "apology". It's their choice to do so. I'm not moving on, though.
Letterman's promotion of statutory rape fits in nicely with the abortion mills that refuse to inform the police whenever a 13,14,15,16 year old female arrives wanting an abortion at one of their places after being raped by an adult legal age male.
That's who we need to pummel and get after like flies on honey: Grown men impregnating minors and abortion mills protecting those rapists. The joke(?) he made is but a front for something more evil and sinister
Yeah he can. Carlin's dead, so he won't flinch.
Tasteless comedy is so easy…
You do realize that your enlightened superior point of view is being wasted on simple Neanderthals that believe in standing up for the honor of their children or wife. You would probably take the stance if it were your family, that sacrifices have to be made, just so long as you escape unscathed?
White-trash, huh, that is opposed to a worthless snobbish dweeb, except the white-trash can actually take care of themselves, and a family.
As I've mentioned on other threads I don't buy this either. The reason is right after the joke when nothing was a stake Letterman had a chance to say it was in bad taste and he goofed. I would have given him points for that. What did he do? He pretty much gave Palin the finger. Now when sponsors are leaving he issues his "hearfelt apology". Sorry Dave, you showed us who really are.
Letterman said he's sorry, it's a phoney sorry but I don't think he'll be fired or anything. However I would like to point at that being vindictive, petty and not letting things go seems to work pretty well for the liberals.
Wow, you actually strung two sentences together! Too bad they still don't make sense.
cjenk, it is not "fun"-
The issue is ~THEY~ will never give up having fun with Sarah or any on our side on late night shows.
It is a serious issue–how much to hold them accountable for…?
I think Mrs.Palin did the right thing to scream "foul" but to accept his lame excuse.
He is exposed as a jackass to those with ears.
To the last person, anyone that I discussed "The Joke" with were apalled by it. Most people I discussed it with loathe politics and did not have a political bone to pick with anyone. They do hate people making casual comments about the sexual contact with young ladies, such as Willow Palin.
If you really believe what you say about the Gibson and Couric interviews, it is hard to tell. I am skeptical as the lines are straight out of the standard Palin media talking points. And 99% of the "negative track record" is fabricated.
Apparently you missed the point completely when she said, and thankfully we have the right to express our reaction,” Palin said.
Governor Palin accepting Letterman apology shouldn't stop this controversy and shouldn't get in the way of CBS firing Letterman and any other individual and or comedian who feels it is a joke to take on Political opponents children by degrading and embarrassing them in public. Anyone who thinks an apology is enough should have a reality check or is a Liberal looking out for Letterman or like minded comedian so they can continue to tell their sick jokes on opponents childrens .
WOW I thought liberals were the whiney PC police. I can't help but notice also that a lot of folks are reading things into his joke that wasn't there. First it was obviously about the older daughter, evidenced by the fact that she was the 'knocked up' one. Secondly the word rape has been inserted. Third if you believe that Letterman would let a pedophile molestation joke fly your an idiot. Lastly WTF do you people mean by 'cross a line'? What line? Who's line? Yours? Your line is probably a foot away from any point one chooses to start from. MY line you would need a starship to cross. As Sean Hannity (once) said. "if you don't like it, change the dial"
Well said, Stan.
Such elitist language from some manchild who lives with his mom.
Funny, most everyday folks like Sarah very much because she talks like us.
Do you work for Monsanto? Your post feels a tad astroturfy
I'm pretty sure you don't read much. No, I'm certain you don't read at all
Thar she blows, Moby.
Ricky you be careful reading you know it makes your little head hurt. I know you’re still mad because your mom didn’t get you that special gift at Christmas and no more chocolate bunnies at Easter, life just isn’t fair, is it Ricky? We’ll all be waiting your next post with baited anticipation.
Good catch. He's neither consistent nor honest nor sorry. But Governor Palin is through with him, and good on her for doing so. Too many of these idiots take cheap shots and never get called out on doing so. Maybe they'll put a little thought into attack mode in the future. I don't think public figures should become the sacred cows that Obama is, but a little discretion wouldn't hurt.
Can you IMAGINE if he had made this joke about an Obama child or a Biden child? And, why is it acceptable to make a derogatory sexual remark about a young woman who is 18 (compared to an underage one)? Mssr. Letterman appears to think it is okay to make this type of slur against a young lady 18 years or older. The only reason Letterman apologized is because he got caught; I doubt that he is truly sorry. Defamation against woman of ANY age is unacceptable and our society needs to make an adjustment and teach young women to value themselves more so that men will simply learn.
You seem to place the 'knocked up' status over the 'actually there' status. Some would disagree as to which falls into the 'obviously' category.

—– At 3:38 minute mark Margaret speaking in compassion of her unwed and pregnant sister, Helen Schlegal, to her husband Henry…
Margaret: Henry, listen you have had a mistress, I forgave you. My sister has a lover, you drive her from the house. Why can you not be honest for once in your life and say to yourself what Helen has done, I have done?
"I AM NOT AN ANIMAL!" — Elephant Man Cry for Humanity
What David Letterman can't grasp about Bristol Palin: If you have a baby out of wedlock with your high school sweetheart, it does not mean you were a whore or are a whore for the rest of your life. Helen's condition will not depreciate the property value and until you apologize for thinking this, David Letterman, I don't forgive you.
You're nuts. There was only one daughter at that baseball game and it was Willow. That's who the joke was referring to and Letterman is just covering his ass by talking about the "intention" of the joke.
A "republican", huh?
Sure….
[...] And on tonight’s Letterman show, he magically decides to apologize to the Palin family (What timing). Here is a full transcript from Big [...]
It is this "white trash" for the most part, who wear the uniform and put there lives on the lib
ne to protect your right to be a despicable jackass spewing utter nonsense.
On the line. Sorry
Thorazine alert on ricky!
And this is important how? Palin should have just blown it off, but instead her handlers let her shoot herself in the foot by making war on some talk show host. Now, CNN and MSNBC will have a couple of months of ammo to use against her, to trivialize her politically.
And defend the country, for sure!
American Thinker, Pajamas Media, Jules Crittenden, Commentary, Michael Totten, all have fairly current articles and discussions on Iran developments.
Palin proved herself in Alaska. If you don't know her record, haven't watched her debate in that race, you are a useful idiot for James Carville and Paul Begala. Or else you're a troll. And who cares?
Sarah sliced and diced Letterman on the Today Show. Loved how she took charge of the interview. Such a dummie, eh? The dummie just put together the biggest infrastructure deal in the history of the USA. After decades of failure by other Alaska governors. Looking forward to Katie C. having to say, "President Palin."
CBS has standards; one set for liberal jokes not being allowed and one set for everybody else where anything goes….and a new set kiss 0's ass.
Except for the fact the joke doesn't make sense if its aimed specifically at Willow. And no one without an agenda would try to suggest that, other than to make it "worse" to justify all your phony "outrage"–whicc was tiresome at first, now just seems petty. Especially since he apologized. Twice.
You don't have to like Letterman, but you guys with your continual exaggeration of the joke actually make him look sympathetic, so I hope that's your goal.
I believe you confuse "once again shown" with "once again accused of but never proven" in your statements. It's the mistake one makes when letting your fantasies do your typing.
