Letterman Apologizes to Palin Family
by Big HollywoodUPDATE: Video after jump.
Full text of Letterman’s explanation, which will air on tonight’s show:
“All right, here – I’ve been thinking about this situation with Governor Palin and her family now for about a week – it was a week ago tonight, and maybe you know about it, maybe you don’t know about it. But there was a joke that I told, and I thought I was telling it about the older daughter being at Yankee Stadium. And it was kind of a coarse joke. There’s no getting around it, but I never thought it was anybody other than the older daughter, and before the show, I checked to make sure in fact that she is of legal age, 18. Yeah. But the joke really, in and of itself, can’t be defended. The next day, people are outraged. They’re angry at me because they said, ‘How could you make a lousy joke like that about the 14-year-old girl who was at the ball game?’ And I had, honestly, no idea that the 14-year-old girl, I had no idea that anybody was at the ball game except the governor and I was told at the time she was there with Rudy Giuliani … and I really should have made the joke about Rudy …” (audience applauds) “But I didn’t, and now people are getting angry and they’re saying, ‘Well, how can you say something like that about a 14-year-old girl, and does that make you feel good to make those horrible jokes about a kid who’s completely innocent, minding her own business,’ and, turns out, she was at the ball game. I had no idea she was there. So she’s now at the ball game, and people think that I made the joke about her. And, but still, I’m wondering, ‘Well, what can I do to help people understand that I would never make a joke like this?’ I’ve never made jokes like this as long as we’ve been on the air, 30 long years, and you can’t really be doing jokes like that. And I understand, of course, why people are upset. I would be upset myself.
“And then I was watching the Jim Lehrer ‘Newshour’ – this commentator, the columnist Mark Shields, was talking about how I had made this indefensible joke about the 14-year-old girl, and I thought, ‘Oh, boy, now I’m beginning to understand what the problem is here. It’s the perception rather than the intent.’ It doesn’t make any difference what my intent was, it’s the perception. And, as they say about jokes, if you have to explain the joke, it’s not a very good joke. And I’m certainly – ” (audience applause) “– thank you. Well, my responsibility – I take full blame for that. I told a bad joke. I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception. And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke. It’s not your fault that it was misunderstood, it’s my fault. That it was misunderstood.” (audience applauds) “Thank you. So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I’m sorry about it and I’ll try to do better in the future. Thank you very much.” (audience applause)

I still won't watch the dorktard. And I almost believe his apology. If "almost" is defined as it is in "Iran almost has free elections."
Watching Jim Lehrer? What him and Bill Maher and two other kooky wanna be intellectuals?
I think I heard this in Chicago when I was in college. John Wayne Gacy said that he took pause when he heard that Richard Speck was troubled by the things he was doing. But then he went ahead and dumped another body in the crawlspace.
Making the joke about any of her children of any age was wrong. He would never have told that joke to her face. Palin, being the class act, will gracefully accept the apology.
Johnny Carson must be rolling over in his grave.
So he still stands by the "slutty flight attendant" joke?
He's still a pathetic creep.
This apology does seem a load of crapola- who makes jokes about someone's children of ANY age if they themselves are not a political figure (ala Megan McCain)? He just needs ratings and WE need to focus on way more important things… election in Iran, lousy economy, failing education, and on and on and on.
Two things:
Thing One: Since when does 18 make you the legal age to be the butt of a joke? Is that part of the Living Document? Please, we were all upset when SNL poked fun at Chelsey's looks. Some jokes just aren't funny (OK, maybe about Giuliani's looks…kidding!).
Thing Two: I think Dave did right. He sets an example. Whether you believe him or not, he sets the example for others (Maher, are you listening?) to follow.
Now, get funny again, Dave. They say comedy's a young man's game, but I've seen too many older funny guys to buy that.
Too little, too late.
And still crying "poor me".
The whole apology reeks of self pity.
He still doesn't give a rat's arse about the Palin women.
Turd.
Begging forgiveness rather than showing restraint? If anyone with "teh Magic (D)" next to their name does it = Responsible.
Ugh. Well, that's much better than before. Let's just hope he doesn't change his mind and offer the sucker punch when he thinks he can.
Letterman is so full of leftwing Kool-aid that in an effort to destroy a political foe he is willing to destroy his own career. Hollywood's version of a suicide bomber.
I still call BS on this "apology" because he is losing advertising from Embassy Suites and other advertisers. Protest is on tomorrow. Letterman is pathetic.
I'm confused by our new political reality. So now it's the Republicans who play the victimhood game and generate phony outrage over politically incorrect jokes? Isn't this sort of "the sky is falling because someone offended me" a more natural fit on the other side of the aisle?
This is just pathetic — a party trying to get rid of the perception that a shock-jock is its head now has its most popular politician engaging in a stupid war of words with a late-night talk show host?
Nope not enough! Try falling on your sword…….That should fix it………
Squirm Dave, you deserve it. You've been mean spirited for years and it's finally caught up with you.
So if a comedian tells a racist joke on national TV but didn't intend it to offend then that's OK? Or if a joker tells an anti-semitic joke but didn't intend to offend then we should understand 'in his heart' he's a good guy not meaning to offend just earning his 30 pieces of silver. Or if a 30 year comedian tells a joke that is really a put-down of all women then his misogyny isn't real because he didn't intend it. Just think, his wife kisses that mouth. He apologized (sort of) which is a good thing then he tries to qualify it to make himself look less responsible. You would think he would have learned from Jamie Fox's foot-in-mouth episode.
I think it is interesting that it took television program for him to realize it was wrong. He wasn't able to figure it out on his own, or wasn't able to believe the internet or radio or NOW or any number of sources. It took Jim Lehrer.
I'm not sure wath that means, but it is interesting.
So, he stood up and apologized good for him. So does it end here? or does he get canned?
I don't think he should get fired until either ratings or ad revenue drops. But I didn't think Imus should have been fired either.
Sheesh. Everybody is so sensitive. Wah, wah, wah. He hurt my feelings.
Except Palin's feelings weren't hurt. She just saw an opportunity to make political hay. Letterman shouldn't have apologized.
too little, too late– he's not been funny for what, forever? By the way, what's with the audience orchestrated applause? But, we have spent way to much time on this guy and his b.s. apology. Time to put him where he belongs; out of sight and out of mind.

You just keep on believing that, OK.
I don't think Letterman has ever apologized for anything, so I don't take this apology too lightly. At least he manned up and took responsibility for his mistake. It's just a shame that his job had to be threatened before he did it.
You liberals have always said we should be more like you.
I think that's about as good as we're going to get from him. Is it genuine? I don't know. What's certain is that he's genuinely afraid of losing his job—which means that all our emails, phone calls and letters paid off.
It feels good.
I wouldn't say it's too late. It's taken me a week to get my hackles down before. But it is a kind of sparse apology. More than I thought we'd see, and more than most libs would proffer… but sparse.
Lame apology, from a lame comedian.
We choose whether to be offended. The Palin's chose to be. I find it hard to give them too much grief based on the other attacks on their children, but yes they chose how to react. That said, it was a really inappropriate comment and he should have been aware enough to know it.

I'm willing to give the guy a break. Not because he deserves it, but because he was stupid. The joke wasn't funny no matter which daughter he was using, but I think this is a very good response. Is it authentic? Probably as much as possible for Letterman? Is he really contrite? Probably as much as he is able. Should he have made the apology on day one? No. He should never have told the joke.
The real problem is that the Left and the media on that side of the aisle have abetted him and all the others who have felt free to use this kind of offensive humor. There are two issues. First, any joke you make where a Republican/conservative is the butt is acceptable – no matter how offensive. Second, if you are on the side of Angels (Liberal), you can get away with anything. These together allow the writers to create a joke, and for him to tell the joke with neither one asking if it is beyond the pale. They are just colorblind to the offensiveness. The most amazing thing to me was not his weazley response after this came up. It was how the talking heads on the Left tried to turn Dave into a victim of some sort of attack. Consistent with their world view, the joke that triggered this brouhaha was never considered.

Kudos to Letterman for manning up. The way the Palin family has been attacked by the Left is scary…such unadulterated hatred from people who are supposedly open-minded, live and let live types. They're supposedly for equal rights, feminists even. Give 'em a strong woman that disagrees with their positions and they'll attack her mercilessly. Liberals are hypocrites with no class.
I've read his apology twice. There's no real recognition of the Palin family as human beings, or their children being non-targets for vile humor. He still implies that Bristol is a worthy target.
His apology is all about how he's let himself down, failed to live up to HIS standards. Feh.
.
"It’s the perception rather than the intent"
The industry of illusion would not have it any other way.
He probably wouldn't have if not for the fact he was losing sponsors. So he's mean spirited, too cowardly to take a stand and a corporate whore.
http://www.seattlepi.com/tvguide/407238_tvgif15.h...
David Letterman is a pinhead. Of course the intent of the joke was to trash the Conservative Palin family pure and simple. About the only laughable aspect of the joke is that Liberals just fear this family so much they feel they must trash her and her children at every opportunity so for David Letterman to now make it sound like this intent wasn't the main reason for the joke , well, only an idiot thinkless liberal, who by the way would be outrage if the joke was about his or her daughter , would think otherwise. So it is indefensible for Liberal comedians like Letterman to take cheap shots at some politician family to make his pathetic point and lets hope he pays the price for it in a big big way.
The left-wing pundits have been yammering all w/end long about "Palin should just shut up and move on."
Palin hasn't mentioned this in 72 hours and probably won't mention it again. It's Dave who can't move on.
Just like every web site master out there knows, all you have to do is mention Palin and your web site hits increase. Dave will be the one to run this into the ground.
He knows he'll never be able to get you heartless hounds off his back.
Sorry Dave, don't believe you for a second. You were still rubbing it in and mocking Palin (and her daughter) AFTER the first wave of criticism. You're typical liberal scum, dishonest to the core. Just learn to live with that fact.
PS I hear President "Um Um" is on his way to Iran to give poor Ahmadinejad a backrub. What a weak and incompetent administration.
I'm not a liberal, just an independent conservative who is hoping that the Republicans will fade into the distance and open up some room for a viable third and/or fourth party out there to evolve beyond the farce that is current American politics (see this entire argument and the current GOP in general as examples). But go on, keep whining about this; can't you tell how well it's working? The Republicans are almost there, especially with bands of outraged victims like posters on this site as the base and with Michael Stizeele at the helm. And after this spat with Letterman, now Sarah Palin has all kinds of mainstream political credibility and the support of feminists nationwide. Right? Right?
for what it's worth, may I say that I watched Letterman interview Rush Limbaugh in late 1993, and Letterman seemed genuinely interested in what Rush had to say. I'm not going to defend Letterman, I haven't watched much late night tv in a good long while, but everyone makes mistakes, and Letterman at least isn't the President. I've been a right-winger for at least 40 years (since I was in early high school) and maybe I'm just remembering how much fun he was on NBC 20 years ago, but I'd give him at least a third of a pass on this. "To err is human, but Andy is Devine…" (another sign of old age.)

—"It’s the perception rather than the intent"
That sealed it for me. It's a non-apology. I can't resist a contrite heart and I wanted to believe him. But he's just blaming it on our faulty "perception."
I don't give a rat's @ss whether she was 14 or 18. The children of Sarah Palin ARE NOT FAIR GAME. So shove it up your @ss you gap-toothed freak.
This Alinsky thingy is fun…the left has practiced this technique for years…but we have cracked the code…..I say get him off the air….he is a billionaire, he has an island, a young wife and son, his cup over floweth…let's" distribute his wealth" to another late night host…..
He's lying. He knew Willow (or at the very least, a daughter) was with Gov. Palin at Yankees game. AND he is only acting like he made the one joke about 14 year old Willow Palin getting "knocked up" by 33 year old A-Rod in the seventh inning.
He ALSO said "slutty flight attendant" outfits when referring to Gov. Palin's shopping habits and taste.
He ALSO said: The hardest part of the NY Trip was keeping Eliot Spitzer away from Palin's daughter. (Eliot Spitzer is 50 years old and got caught with a young prostitute.)
Dave Letterman: Stay away from sexist "jokes." Why don't you hire a TRUE feminist who KNOWS when something is wrong and out of line. You would know when a RACIST "joke" is out of line. Get with the times, Letterman.
Definatly not a surprise, You couldn't teach them simple math if you wanted to.
Switching gears to victim phase now…

Steve Crowder! Yes? Yes?!!!
You have to give credit where credit is due. Seriously, given the way most lefties behave I never expected that he would give a complete and honest apology, and I'll accept that he's being honest when he gives this one.
The thing is, he does hate Sarah Palin. So of course he won't apologize for his other mean 'joke', just the one that got him in trouble. So, yeah, I still don't like him. And no it's not because of the Palin thing – as people have been saying for a while, he's just not funny and hasn't been for ages. He's just bitter and mean and a partisan shill.
But again, an apology is all you can do when you screw up. Pity it took him so long. I hope the Palin family accepts the apology and everybody moves on.
You're probably right. But then again Letterman has pretty much insulted, in one form or another, the type of people who are on this board. I really don't care what he says and don't take much offense to it. It's just the typical mean-spirited (see how I stole that liberal catch-phrase) crap that this guy has been putting out over the past few years. If he, unlike Michael Jordon, pisses off half of his viewership and they stop watching, then good.

Boo f**king Hoo. He's gotten a lot less flack than Limbaugh did when he made that completely harmless Donovan McNabb statement. It's also nothing compared to the irrational mouth-foaming hysteria over the NY Post cartoon about the chimp being shot. Grow up.
Yup. We learned it from the best (you Libs).
A bunch of right-wing hypocrites. The crap that spews out of almost every right-wing commentator's mouth is a hundred times worse than any poor-taste joke that Letterman made. I can give you a hundred examples, but I won't waste my time here.
He's right, you've become, what you thought was dumb, a fraction of the sum.
your absolutely right, Maybe slaughtering some wolves from a helicopter will make her feel better.
Bonus points for the Built to Spill shout-out
Yep, you guys are just like the radicals, I know!
Does this mean he's no longer Obama's official Court Jester?
Not enough dirt on Obama, so they switch to letterman, what sound logic
Yes.
Now you know better than that. Hunting wolves is illegal. It's coyotes she's after, and she would never shoot them from a chopper. She would use an electronic rabbit call, and shoot them from a blind, like you're supposed to. You should try it some time.
Jesus….what does it take for you people?
Where are the jokes about Zero and Plugs? Between the two there is a real goldmine of jokes. Yet Littleman and his writers can't thnk of one?? A second apology, because the first one wasn't sincere. I doubt this second apology was his idea. Losing sponsers is bad for business.
Palin's feelings weren't hurt?
How the hell would you know?
Are you psychic and reading her mind? Are you just assuming her feelings weren't hurt because 'them rethuglikkkans don't have no feelins like us real human beings'? Do you think she's actual a fembot programmed from Rethuglikkkan Central Command?
Please share with us your insight into the heart of a woman you don't know and couldn't begin to understand.
Jesus what does it take to convince you people? Did you want him to bring Palin on the show and hug her to make it ok? A whole hour dedicated to the apology? Jeezy Creezy.
At least he has admitted his mistake and apologised. I am yet to see a single Right Winger talker apologies and admit they were wrong.
YOU'RE FIRED.
Apologies didn't save Imus.
Letterman should just retire.
Thing is Dave has not written a joke or a Top Ten list in many years. His ex Harvard Lampoon guys, they of the trust funds and the nannies who did everything for them before they went off to Groton are the old money, liberal elitist mouthpieces of Dave.
Dave hates any Republican and especially any female Republican so he lets the bitterness, cynicism, and misogyny of these punks just feed into his own warped sense of comedy.
–"It was a joke."
If it was just a joke, then they'd be telling these "jokes" about Democrats too. But they don't. The targets of these "jokes" are strictly rightwing/Republican. Why? Because these jokes are political warfare masquerading as humor. Behind the "joke" is a white hot hatred for the subject of their "joke". They are told for the purposes of demeaning and destroying their target. It's pure politics of personal destruction and they should not be let off the hook with these non-apologies.
It has nothing to do with being offended. Only the Palins have the right to be offended. It has to do with common decency and civil behavior. Where I'm from an 'adult', especially a male doesn't pick on a child. He doesn't make a child the butt of a joke, it's beneath him. He doesn't beat a child, verbally or physically. He doesn't take advantage of a child's misfortune by making fun of it. This Letteman fiasco is about raising the standard since the aged poster boy for crass conduct steps over the line.
Dave, a joke that you have to explain isn't funny and an apology that you have to keep giving isn't a very good one.
Of course, blame the victim because, well, Sarah Palin is always wrong, right?
Plenty of dirt on Obama. It's just that you and the Obama-fellating media had more dirt in your ears from keeping your heads in the sand.
David Letterman is a fraud. He says he would never say such a horrible joke like the one about Palin daughter.. but as we all know he did go out and say it and enjoyed saying it. SO do you really believe him. THIS GUY NEEDS TO GO. He knew what he was doing. FIRE HIM and if he isn't fire then we need to SHUT OFF CBS NETWORK VIEWING ALTOGETHER.
A third party pretty much assures a second Obama term.
You prove the lie when you call yourself an "independent conservative," yet you "hop(e) that the Republicans will fade into the distance." What a crock. Why not the Democraps? You are neither independent nor conservative. You're just a liar.
excuse me, this was a joke about someone's children. Do you honestly think that Obama's girls would be fair game? The reporter who said Hillary was pimping Hillary was fired for that comment and that was on a MSNBC.Would Letterman dare to make jokes about Pelosi's children or grand-children? How about Biden's daughter? Fair game with sexual jokes?
It's not stupid for parents to stand up to sexual jokes about one's children I don't care what political party you represent, what color, what nationaity. Kids are off limits for sexual jokes or innuendos.
The new political reality is the attack on women in this country who are in the political arena. I am sick and tired of the smearing of the women who run for political office in this country. NOW put Letterman in the hall of Shame, they are also protesting.
Oh and btw, it's not that it is politically incorrect, it's morally incorrect!
This isn't about Palin, this about her girls. I never thought Letterman would stoop so low.
Honest remorse and humility.
You know, the things you usually expect in an apology?
The american taliban strikes again.
Did the fax from Media Matters not come through yet or something? They have a website where you can get totally out of context hit quotes on your most hated Republicans! Stop being such a lazy leftie troll.
What's there to be wrong about? My indignation is sincere and righteous, and today's Letterman apology, for me six days too late and too little with the "perception" crack, validates all those who shared Governor and Todd Palin's anger.
Bring Palin on the show? You know what? I'm sure that's on his mind and his bookers are working overtime to make that happen. If they're successful, you'll hear about it sooner rather than later. Betcha Letterman will now sell his soul to get the ratings a Palin guest shot would bring, just like it did for McCain.
Don Imus met with sincerely apologized to the Rutgers Women's Basketball Team(which they accepted). Letterman's new "apology" wasn't sincere, more of a CYA so advertisers and ratings don't drop.
This is quite big of him. I commend him for issuing a formal, sincere, apology.
For those who say it's "too late", consider that this is the first moment he had airtime since Thursday evening (Friday was a pre-taped show). Letterman's powerful, but not that powerful.
I still, however, would love it if Palin went on his show. She can truly rip the comedy juice out of the current comedy universe.
Psychic? Reading her mind? It's not necessary. Just follow the breadcrumbs: Letterman said "knocked up"; Palin said "rape". Why would she escalate the intensity of what Letterman said? Was it to protect her child? If that's what she wanted, she shouldn't have made a big media production out of it. But Palin did. She could have privately called Letterman — he would have taken her call I expect — and told him she was really offended. But she didn't. She instead issued a press release. If Palin really was offended and really cared about the impact on her daughter, she would have dealt with this out of the limelight. But she didn't. This whole thing would have been a minor blip if Palin hadn't inflated it.
You think Palin didn't consider the political benefit of publicly calling out a comedian for making a joke? Feh. Palin isn't that naive. Remember that this is the same woman who was happy to parade her daughter's out-of-wedlock pregnancy when it suited her political ambitions. This is the same woman who twisted Bristol's boyfriend's arm until he "proposed" to Bristol…. just until the election was over.
I don't need to be psychic.
??? What's Adam Gadahn have to do with this? Go back to the DUmmies, you moron.
One good thing………a sincere apology that one believes in can be cathartic, but being forced into an insincere apology is simply humiliating. Right now I suspect Letterman is eating himself up from the inside……….
All we want is for him to sound sincere.
So basically yeah, given that this is Letterman, there's very little chance of that.
What does the ACLU have to do with this?
Hate to burst your bubble there chief, but there is such a thing as statutory rape. That's where an adult has sex with a minor. Even if it's mutually consented on by both parties, it's still considered rape. Ergo, Palin calling a spade a spade. Is there something wrong with that?
Here's an article you might want to read: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/arti...
Pay special attention to the paragraph that begins, "A more cynical view…"
That would be me. A more cynical viewer.
He's never made jokes like this in his career? I could have sworn that I heard both he and Jay Leno mocked Bristol Palin during the election when it was made public that she was pregnant. And at the time she was 17, since that seems to be his saving grace defense.
Wrong about what cjerk? Examples?
And actually no, this one apology isn't enough. Go back to Palin's introduction in August. There should be at least a thousand apologies.
Lies about banning books
Lies about her using racial slurs
Lies about her being an anti-semite
Lies about Bristol being Trig's mother
Lies about her cheating on her husband
Lies about her shooting wolves from helicopters (a policy put in place when she was in kindergarten)
Lies about her son being a meth addict
Lies about her forcing rape victims to pay their medical costs out of pocket
Lies about the shopping spree
Lies about her being a seccessionist
Lies about her believing in literal six-day Creationism and speaking in tongues
Lies about calling the Iraq war a holy war from God
Photoshopped bikini pictures (not that I'd mind seeing the real thing)
Her church being burned down
"Sarah Palin is a c**t" t-shirts
A website asking for donations to give Bristol an abortion
Smarmy remarks about seducing her children's friends
"Spay the bitch" signs
"Go back to your igloo, whore" signs
Hanging effigy
NYC display inviting observers to shoot at displays of her and her youngest daughter
Jokes about gang-raping her
Jokes about her Down's syndrome son
Enough?
Oh, but I forgot. It's only the right that hates.
For this Arrogant Creep to make this apology you know the Pressure must be Heavy from a lot of Quarters. He's gotten away with a lot of Mean-Spirited Jokes through the years. What goes around comes around . Couldn't happen to a Better Guy.
EWW who would have relations with that woman?
Not every american is retarded. So it's not like everyone is after letterman.
Crowders a moron.
"It doesn’t make any difference what my intent was, it’s the perception."
Welcome to walking in Gov. Palin's shoes, Mr. Letterman. That confounded "perception" thingy.
Usually, she has the IQ of a bullfrog.
I'll give you this ricky your an expert on morons or more what it takes to be one
Ricky sweet-heart what in the name of the Living God are you taking about. I'm worried about you. Go Home Ricky. Go Home. Please.
Seems the left was drinking Kool Aid spiked with a big helping hate. After this last 8 years liberals have no room to talk about anything, you behavior was beyond the pale and now that some of you are actually getting called on it well it's long overdue.
You don't need insight or to be psychic–watch the news…. sheesh…. dumb!!
Libertarian is the only party I've ever belonged to, and I worked for two Republican Senators in the early part of this decade. Eight years of Bush and his Congress have turned me off of Republicans for ever, along with 90% of the conservatives my age that I know (I'm 30). I have yet to see a recent platform from the GOP that includes a serious attempt at conservatism, just more big government, wars we don't belong in, and politicians trying to dictate how Americans live.
Little hint just because you spout stuff no understands doesn't make you deep.
We've become you ricky?

The "two wrongs make a right" lobby is heard from. Apparently mothers and fathers no longer teach their children that two wrongs don't make a right, nor do they teach them the story about the Little Boy Who Cried Wolf.
CBS should fire David Letterman. I have ask my family and friends not to buy any products or services that advertise on his show. CBS would fire him, if he said that about President Obama daughters being raped at baseball game or called the President Obama wife a " slutty stewardess" CBS would fire him and the MSM would not defend him
Notice you didn't say how you could teach us simple math. Because that would be beyond you.
There is plenty of dirt on Obama but nobody wants to touch it. You can start here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EcC0QAd0Ug
So how exactly did Obama get into Harvard and pay for his education? Bear in mind that Percy Sutton is no right-wing commentator or activist. Certainly a lot more credible and interesting than the contents of the forged documents that Dan Rather threw his career away on.
If you weren't an idiot, I'm sure you would have figured out Ithat 'm a female. Yes, I'm sure she's smarter than me—and that still makes me smarter than you.
Care to show us where you got that figure or is it you just wishing that? Obviously it must be a little more then that because he was losing sponsors and that's why Letterman made this second attempt not because he's actually sorry. Notice when he thought there wasn't any danger of losing anything what his reponse was. A snarky "apology" that was almost as bad as the joke. It showed who he really was. Lettreman and the other fools have been getting away with this for a long time so yes it's good to seem them finally get called on it. Your deep and insightful to realize that. Maybe your next big insight will be that Jews and Arabs don't like each other.
You jolted me to reality- what was I thinking??? One should never encourage trolls to use anything more powerful than a cap, no- squirt gun.
Ricky, let me rephrase that statement….
During the election,Wasilla resident Anne Kilkenny wrote a letter, widely circulated on the left, critical of Sarah Palin in her ambition. Among her characterizations of Sarah Palin? "She is energetic and hardworking." "She is savvy." "She's smart." You'd think if Palin had the IQ of a bullfrog, Kilkenny might have said that, instead, right? But, hey, why trust someone who actually knows her and doesn't like her when you can watch Saturday Night Live and a heavily edited interview with Katie Couric, instead, right?
14 state investigations into ACORN, his refusal to show us any personal information like school records and birth records yeah nothing there.
ricky don't speak of what you have no knowledge of
The press is sitting on the story of a lifetime, but they're all so enamored with Lowbama that they won't go for it. Imagine the scoop of proving that he's illegit, and bringing down the POTUS! Man, they'd be demanding Congressional hearings if this were one of ours. Impeachment proceedings to follow…Letterman and Maher jokes without end….
Unless you show the same cynicism to, say, John Kerry's Vietnam war stories, Al Gore's personal carbon footprint, or things like Obama not releasing his academic or health records, then that doesn't make you a more cynical viewer, just a more partisan one. Real cynics aren't partisan. Partisans pretending to be real cynics are.
This isn't about parties – this is about someone attacking someone's kids and women in general (the flight attendant thing). Parties become involved because of the double standard.
I think it's a sick society that can listen to what filth spewed from that man's mouth and make excuses for him. He's sick, you're sick and I'm mad as can be.
As I've said before during high school in the 80s (showing my age) I watched Letterman every night before I went to bed. It was before VHS came down in price (again the age thing), even if I had a VHS I wouldn't have watched him in the daytime. There was something about watching him at 12:30am, it was like most of the world had gone to bed and he took over and his attitude was it's after midnight no one but us is up let's do what we want. But that magic is gone, back then he took pot shots at everyone but now he's became a mean and bitter liberal and who wants to watch that?
When this controversy first broke, I was as outraged as most others on BH — but I have to admit the apology seems sincere to me. I believe him.
Sorry I don't buy it. Because last week before sponsors were pulling out he had a chance to make amends. What he said when he didn't think anything would happen speaks a lot about him. It was an arrogant and contempt filled non-apology. Now he's all serious, when the money is leaving his show. Sorry Dave, you had the chance to be a stand up guy but you blew it.
I prefer the Palins' announcement that they did not intend to increase Letterman's ratings by having anyone of their family appear on his show. A good judgment, especially considering his lame "I only intended to embarrass and humiliate the older girl" explanation last week. Oh, that makes him an honorable man….
Although I am not moved by Letterman's "intent" argument — words like that are never intended to bring harmless joy — I found the rest of his apology to be pretty moving, It was certainly more honorable than the "I am sorry if you took offense" malarkey that so many people, public and private, offer in lieu of any admission of guilt. Considering his apparent view of everything Palin, that was pretty solid stuff.
You're entirely right. Showing disapproval of an offensive and purely ideologically motivated 'joke' by a late-night host is morally equivalent to murdering gays, banning girls from education, destroying historic monuments, eliminating freedom of speech and religion, killing anyone who gets in your way…
Obviously, the outrage and the comments in the non-MSM media for the past week has had an impact. It's a bit late and a bit lame, but it's still an apology. And I hope Governor Palin make a gracious and public acceptance of the apology—on the Conan O'Brian show.
[...] If you happen to be in New York on Tuesday, June 16th, you can attend Tuesday’s FIRE DAVID LETTERMAN RALLY. It will be held at 4:30 PM at the Ed Sullivan Theater: 1697 Broadway, New York City (click here to sign on to Facebook Event). And on tonight’s Letterman show, he magically decides to apologize to the Palin family (What timing). Here is a full transcript from Big Hollywood: [...]
Yup, you're cynic all right: someone who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.
Soooo the joke is OK if it was the 18 year old getting raped. Interesting. Wonder if Bucktooth has the balls to make a joke about Obamas girls in a threesome with Lex Steele LOL
So that's why Democrats slaughter people in urban areas across the US; to feel better.
Spitzer liked to have sex with young prostitutes. You can say it's about Spitzer and I can say it's about calling the daughter a hooker! (P.S. I am a registered democrat and the MSM is mainly liberal, and you know it.)
No, you have a small point there. There is nothing the man could do to regain me as a fan (but he lost that long ago when he stopped being funny. Which is a GREATER sin for someone that calls themselves a comedian than having political views I disagree with).
I don't see how you expect us to all of the sudden love someone that harbors such an abject hatred for us just because he apologized for one comment.
At any rate, I don't believe his apology was sincere because I believe in the depths of his soul he wishes every conservative and Republican in the country would just drop dead.
He says he's sorry, but I suspect its more he's sorry he got called out, not sorry he said what he said.
Frankly I'd have had more respect for him (and believed he was more sincere) if he'd said "Hey, I said the joke and I stand by it and if you don't like it screw you, ya Republican bitches!"
I agree.
I'm going to call you a damn liar to your face. Talk about hypocrites.
There's not a single thing you'll find from any mainstream conservative talk radio host that is even REMOTELY as in poor taste as the joke Letterman made. Not from Rush, Not from Hannity, Not from Beck, Bozell, Medved, Ingram, or any other mainstream conservative talk radio personality.
I think the Dems and their buddies in the media are just really pissed that Sarah fought back – big time on this one.
Payback's a bitch. Get used to it Dems. You've been shoving it down our throat for too many years (even though we spit it back up). Payback's a real bitch. Sarah's got an army of supporters behind her. Get used to it.
Michelle Obama, we're a country that is "just downright mean" Waaaaaaaahhh!
Of course, we know Obama was talking about the crowd she hangs with; nasty, lunatic-liberals.
Exactly.
I'm not so sure that this apology is being prompted by a true understanding of just how offensive that those jokes were. I suspect that it had more to do with the execs at GE making a call to the execs at NBC who had a heart to heart with Mr. Letterman. Having said that, it's time to move on with the knowledge that (as it has been said in earlier posts) emails, letters and phone calls can make a difference and we need to start getting more active to ensure that conservatives aren't just rolled over.
One thing to remember as well is had the situation been reversed, the liberals would have continued to attack until there was just a smoking hole in the ground.
I think you misread my response. I was respondign to ricky's usual idiotic remark
So do you vote for the Democrats who have combined social engineering with economics?
Who are you? Well I don't know you but based on what I've read your someone who thinks he's a lot smarter then he is. You and MovieBob should meet.
[...] is the original post: Letterman Apologizes to Palin Family This entry is filed under America – Blogs, Big Hollywood. You can follow any responses to this [...]
Well nice ot see your aware of it. Really you and MovieBob have to meet it's always funny to see two guys who think they are really smart and witty in the same room it never works out because each of you thinks he's the smarter and witter one, it never ends well so no match making there.
Look the joke my aren't you smart and witty and painfully self aware
The problem with the apology was his insisting on the intention vs perception of the joke. He's still hedging his bets, imo.
I do think that conservative talk radio hosts do sometimes cross the line into poor taste. That said, what's missing in the comparison is that conservative talk radio hosts are partisans and engage in partisan attacks against their political opponents. Is Letterman really just another partisan attacking his political opponents?
This is the sound of David Letterman letting me down.
What a freaking coward. All he had to do was make it to next weekend and this would've blown over, replaced by the actually important news coming out of Iran or even something else more trivial to take it's place. He should be cursing the gods that "American Idol" was still running so that the "Us Magazine" crowd that actually gives a crap about this story had something else to obsess over.
Top to bottom, the Palins are the biggest blight to emerge on the American political scene since, I dunno… the Quayles? Sharpton? Savage satire is supposed to help seperate the political wheat from the chaffe – if they can't laugh-off some spectacularly tame late-night jokes, I dunno how they expect to be taken seriously.
You're not a lefty?
Let me see then. You're a "moderate".
And BTW, saying , as you did on another thread, that moderates in congress were fooled in to approving the invasion of Iraq is naive. No one was fooled. They voted for it because they thought it was the right thing to do.
Ever see the Nightline piece from 1999 on Iraq?
Look it up.
Context, buddy. Context.
YouTube is killing the Democrats
How the hell does he accept that it is okay to make a joke about any woman being raped by anyone? He should be terminated and left to the animals on the street. If he had been in prison and said that about any of the thugs children wives or mothers he wouldn't have had a week to think it over and then apologize. Fire the pervert and get him off the air so women and children don't have to be insulted by this in-human bastard again. I happen to be a father of one daughter and a grand father of five women and Would have visited him had it been told of one of mine.
Letterman is nothing but an old, stoic, stale, gap-toothed has-been. His show hasn't been funny in 15 year's. It's time to retire……………..you dinosaur
You're young and not as smart as you think you are. Your PWN3GE skills are sadly lacking. You need more depth , kid.
The problem is this: In his hatred of Sarah Palin and what she stands for, and this pathological need to attack her, it never even occurred to him to give a nano second of thought to whether his remarks could cause 'collateral' damage to a 14 year-old girl. He didn't care. It never crossed his radar. He fired a shot at Gov. Palin and also hit an innocent bystander, and because he didn't INTEND to harm anyone else and offers up a crock-adillic 'My bad' when the fecal matter hits the oscillating cooling device, we're all supposed to gather up our guns and Bibles and retreat uncritically to our Fly Over Country caves and cease 'misunderstanding' his enlightened brand of humor.
I prefer to of myself as handsome bordering on pretty. Have wonderful witty and clever night.
It's always funny to see the guys who think they have it all figured out like Vince, that's about when life boots them in the butt to remind them they ain't quite as smart as they thought. He may learn but then again all fools don't die young, case in point Joe Biden.
You're like an apprentice troll or something, aren't you?
You stink. You have no skills.
Oh and John, you "won't waste you time" because you have nothing that compares to what your lefty brethren have thrown at Palin.
Now finish your chores or you can't go to the mall.
Yeah, I think our young apprentice troll needs to stick to making coffee for the pros
You obviously have no family.
If you do then you're obviously not very close to them.
You have NO clue what you're talking about.
Tame, my a$$.
You're clueless and unfunny….kind of like the person who used to be David Letterman
I've got the world's smallest violin and I'll be over here playing it for you. The hypocrisy here is stunning. Palin is the one who politicized this and who has continually paraded her family in the spotlight; I don't think I know anyone who watches Letterman's show any more, and I can't imagine 95% of the people who have heard Willow's name in the news would have were it not for her mother making an issue of this. Would you be giving 10 minute interviews on TV rehashing the subject if you thought your daughter was the subject of this stupid joke? If you would, I really feel sorry for your daughter.
And by the way, I'd be willing to bet that each one of you in the "moral outrage" camp voted for John McCain, who made a joke about Chelsea Clinton several years ago that was far more personal and hurtful than Letterman's (google it if you've never heard it). You all seem to have gotten over it, as have I. This is victimhood politics, plain and simple, something that is far more befitting and effective for Pelosi and the lunatic left than for Palin and the lunatic right.
Distractions like this are the reason that your party is a creaking dinosaur, and I think the meteor landed in November in the form of a crushing defeat at the polls. Time to tune back into Limbaugh, who would never ever say something in taste this bad (unless you count every comment he's ever made about feminists or Hillary Clinton).
PS You do realize you're frothing at the mouth this bad over a television show and not something that actually matters, right? Good thing we have a free market economy in this country through which Americans have voted time and time again to make this culture of ours coarser and coarser.

A very attractive and manly husband, with whom several women with good taste would love to be. The homoerotic statements I'll make to prove a point. Truly a pleasure taking one for the team.
Sounds like an honest apology to me. Why not be fair to the guy?
Seppuku.
Because they have no inner monologue.
Logic? Please?
Nah. Letterman didn't get the job.
Gave you the "secret handshake", did he?
Letterman is too little too late, and is still squirming with a half-baked explanation. Let's face it, he hates
Palin (for God knows what reason), and intends to continue to try to hurt her and her daughters. Well
he is hurting all women, all young women, daughters, mothers alike. He is one rotten a**hole that needs
to get canned. He is useless and past his time by around 20 years. Take him off the air.
Now that we have the template figured out and can stuff you in the hallway trash can with it, all of a sudden you all start crying about it.
BTW, you have a "Kick Me" sign on your back…
Yep.
Palin hurts women, by taking away there rights.
It's called the tonight show.
Then stop watching him folks, watch reruns of Full House or something, that sounds more up your alley.
Oh, Riiighhhhtt!
Everyone who believes this tripe, raise your hand…
Republicans fell into the most egregious of traps…they were SO well supported by guys like you, they thought they needed to be "Democrat Lite" and sneak helium conservatism in where they can.
You didn't raise enough Hell when your Senators were bringing in the bacon to your state, because I sure didn't see your face on the news. NOW you want to lecture to me how smart and tough and principled you are?
You're worse than a lib…even in their drug addled echo of a brain cavity, what they're doing makes a kind of sense to them. You just sell out to whomever you think will give you what you want.
New thought, hockey puck…why don't you get off that fat Oprah of yours and work for it?
I listened to tonight's "apology." He just made things worse! He keeps on with this "I thought it was the 18 year old.."
David, you gap-toothed formerly funny and creative but now angry Statist, Dirty-Old-Man moron! It doesn't matter if you made the joke about a 14-year old, an 18-year old, or a 25-year old woman/girl! This girl is somebody's daughter! You could have gotten forgiveness from people like me if you'd STOP acting like it would ahve been okay if only you made it about the 18-year old daughter. But now, I definitely think that you should be FIRED!
I wouldn't trust lil ricky with anything but a Lazer Tag pistol. With no batteries.
However, I would love to tell him he can play with it in south-central LA when its dark outside…
OK ricky, time to turn off the computer and go back to cuddling with Perez Hilton.
Any straight man instantly understands Sarah Palin’s sex appeal. It’s just part of being heterosexual.
At least we now know what team you bat for. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
The only thing he's sorry about is the fact that not everyone thought it was funny..Only the morally corrupt lefties thought it was funny.
Better, Smarter, Faster.
Also More Money, Hotter 2012 Prez Candidates, Morally Superior.
And capable of paying the ridiculous taxes we are saddled with by statists. On time. Correctly.
@ricky-no-dic*y – have you ever seen a woman who didn't have two staples in her midriff?
Well as much as I have disliked Letterman over the past few years I don't see how he could have done any better than that apology. He should have done it the next day but still…
His remark about perception vs intent makes me think that if the world perceives it one way but he intended another – must be quite a glass bubble he inhabits…
Which begs the question: if we Conservatives are so inconsequential, why is Dave pretending to want to crawl through broken glass to set this right and get us all off of his rear porch?
Answer: Because Dave, like lil ricky, like Vince, like tehstupid, like Aunty, like egc, like ___, are all DEATHLY AFRAID of Palin!
Palin gets word on Letterman, flicks off the hockey gloves, pounds Dave into the boards, and apparently brings enough heat along with her that Dave E. Gap-Tooth Jug Eared Neuman has to pull TWO apologies to try to douse the flames. And there is no proof this one will help any more than the first did.
If that wasn't a +1, I don't know what is. Although our intellectual lightweights will be sure to interject something lame right after this posts.
Ha, what a tough guy you are, posting a message on a website! Thank God you idiots are done screwing up this country for a while. I love the premise of your argument here: it's not the Republicans' fault that they turned out to be even worse at governing than the Democrats, it's the independents' fault. Of course, that makes perfect sense. You're victims of someone else's actions, just like Palin always is.
And since you obviously don't know anything at all about how our political system works, a Libertarian is like a Republican except he's actually CONSERVATIVE. I don't know where you got the "drug addled" idea from, but I'm going to guess that it's probably one of your obsessions and that you're in love with big government as long as it means spending endless billions so that it's slightly more difficult to buy drugs in this country. What conservative principles you have. You obviously have never actually looked at which members of Congress feed at the pork trough, or otherwise you'd realize that the Rs have their snouts in there just as deep as the Dems. It's astounding that Republicans have been getting absolutely slayed with people like you as the base. But then again, if you're rich enough to be a Republican, maybe you're rich enough not to have the complete collapse of the financial system affect you or stupid enough to think it's not the fault of the people who have been running it for a decade. Rest easy knowing that a guy named Hussein will be running this country for the next eight years because of how screwed up the last administration was (you know, the $11.3 trillion debt and the core conservative principles and all).
Like you wasted your time with that pointless diatribe?
"Hee-Haw" is on, better hurry up…
Bush has still not apologized for the disaster in Iraq. Nor Cheney. Nor Wolfowitz. Nor Perle. Nor Rumsfeld. A disaster wherein people's children were victims of violent death, as opposed to weak jokes. Keep it up conservatives, keep it up.
I think he borrowed someone's computer over at HuffPro to get that out while the real user was at lunch or something…
Her husband, lil ricky dickey.
Hillary called, she needs you to try on your new gimp suit, and polish up her whip…
And PS: I do not pretend to be nice and take anything remotely looking like high moral ground, so don't expect it. Go sniff Hopey's scrotes.
Here's what Letterman is NOT saying: He's not apologizing for picking on the children of a governor. The "slutty flight attendant" remark is bad enough, but it is defensible from a comedic point of view. Jokes about the pregnancy of Palin's daughter are in bad taste and should be over the line in our social discourse; sadly, they are not.
You had better hope that the riots in Iran are because someone didn't pay someone else off.
Because if the Iranian People have gotten it into their head that "If the Iraqis can do it, we should be able to do it, too, and actually have it count", you will have to do a whole lot of deep-throating those nuttz. And they'll all be Conservative-flavored.
Personally, I think the black robes had a flashback; and saw the days before the Shah had to leave…
I think a lot of us have to admit that he just really kind of lost us when he stopped dropping watermelons off buildings.
If it wasn't that, when Larry "Bud" Melman was gone, so were we.
You're just a creepy old man, Dave!
cjenk, if it makes you feel any better, I bought it. While I am no fan of Letterman attacking Palin the way he does, all along I was willing to give Letterman the benefit of the doubt that the joke was about her older daughter. I still thought it was classless, but not unforgivable. His first "apology" was nothing of the sort.
What I saw tonight, on the other hand, was exactly what I expected. He took responsibility and apologized. He said it didn't matter what his intent was, the joke was taken poorly and that was his fault and he owned up to it.
It doesn't mean I am going to start watching him, but I do think the outrage should be turned down several notches.
Based on the comments here, however, I may be alone in that mindset.
"When you have snatched the talking point from my hand, you will be ready."
I'm sorry, this is kind of like NoKo or Iran pledging to abandon their nuke-em-till-they-glow plans. "I really mean it this time". Does anyone other than Madelaine Halfbright, Bill Clinton, BHO, and the NY Times editorial writers actually believe any of it?
Who believes this is a sincere apology? If he could get away with it, he would make another 20 equal jokes, just the same way he smirked and winked during the first dig-the-hole-deeper ha-ha-ha-you-rubes-are-so-stupid-you-will-believe-this "apology".
Nothing has changed, he is just playing the "are you satisfied now?" card. I won't be placated and I will be happy to continue to pressure his network and advertisers. I'm not saying he needs to be fired or denied air time, not exactly, I'm saying "I won't watch" and I'm saying "I won't cooperate with paying for this video feed". It's a free market thing. Perhaps at some point his network will say "we will go with someone else…".
Too little, too late, and reeking of insincerity.
Ow the old grammar and punction insult well you've got me sparky. Oh yes your rating, I figure a smug little douche like you has to get approval, how bout the -1 you just got for your snotty rant, uh oh your not cool anymore.
The only thing I know about you is what I've read and based on that I say don't sell your self short your very smug.
Letterman proved he's the usual guy brave at running his mouth when there is no precieved risk but when things started to turn against him he caved. This surprises you why? Maher and Stewart would crumble the same way if they actually had to put it on the line for something they said. Why would you want to take them seriously? Don't they keep telling us they're just comics? It's what modern liberlism has wrought, nothing is worth fighting for your the only thing that matters.
Oh by the way you forgot the biggest disaster ever on U.S. politics..Obama.
Ricky the empty wind blowing through your head is not "inner monlogue"
We weren't but his idiocy spilled over. How about watching Saved by the Boss that sounds about your level

I wasn't either, but many Democrats used it as propaganda to win votes. There was an entire book written by Horowitz that demonstrated their vast disparity in their comments within a few months going from pro to con, despite no new information surfacing. Utter scumbags like Harry Reid even announced the surge failed before all the soldiers had deployed (imagine…..the leader of the Senate announcing we had lost), and John Murtha accused Marines of being murderers. They did it for political gain, which makes them (and countless sycophants who echoed their idiotic pronouncements without bothering to educate themselves on the issue) a bunch of disgusting opportunists.
Others (like yourself) use some of the painfully weak talking points and hope nobody notices that they don't jive with reality (like saying Bush knowingly lied about WMDs or that we went there for war profiteering). I wasn't a fan of the war, but once we were there, it was incumbent on us to win (however you define it) and get out as quickly as possible…both for our soldiers and for the Iraqi citizens.
OK, I'm going to try this again (and I'll type slowly).
Elliot Spitzer – Lawyer, Attorney General, Governor…..Committed state and federal crimes with call girls while vigorously prosecuting others. Also known for being politically vindictive in his prosecutions.
Willow Palin – 14 Year-old girl who's never done anything noteworthy (other than being the child of a politician).
Bristol Palin – 18 Year-old girl who's main crime is having sex with her boyfriend, deciding to keep the baby, then watching her scandal impact her mother's political career (and complicate her own life as well). Feeling remorse for her mistakes, she decided to speak out in favor of kids waiting to have sex until they're ready to deal with the consequences.
Vince S. – Internet poster who believes the three are morally equatable.
Seriously, there is just no hope in talking sense into you, is there?
Lame ass apology to match his lame ass jokes!
Palin jokes are a sign of a desperate comedian. Palin children jokes are a sign of an old desperate pervert clinging to ratings.
"it's the perception, not the intent"?
He just apologized that we're too stupid to understand his jokes. What a piece of garbage.
Shoulda, coulda, Dave. Let this be a lesson, Washington, that this country is FED UP with this type of ongoing slander of Sarah Palin and her family. With the b s going on in D.C. maybe, just maybe, the people are speaking out against Dave a lot more than they usually would have, because we are sick of this liberal mentality.
D.C. YOU ARE ON NOTICE. Take note of Dave Letterman's defeat. Vote this gestapo OUT! And all that goes with it, like the ilks of dave letterman….gutterman.
Best Western is feeling the heat, too !!!!! Woohoo! USA! USA! USA! USA!
RALLY TODAY!
[...] Little Miss Attila, the Rhetorician, The Other McCain, Ace of Spades, Hot Air, Riehl World View, Big Hollywood, Wizbang, & Dan Collins. Also, Governor Palin has already accepted the apology: “Of course [...]
but as someone said… Letterman's apology was a half-hearted, "i'll apologize as little as I can".
1) but I never thought it was anybody other than the older daughter, and before the show, I checked to make sure in fact that she is of legal age, 18.
That's problem number one… do you honestly believe that Letterman did any fact checking regards to his joke?
2) and, turns out, she was at the ball game. I had no idea she was there.
Problem #2… there were at least four articles posted by BH users who pointed out the line about who was with Gov. Palin at the game.. and all four mentioned Willow _AND_ her age. So go back to #1… so that "Fact checking" was … a lie?
3) "Oh, boy, now I’m beginning to understand what the problem is here. It’s the perception rather than the intent.’ I"…
So we were too stupid to understand that the joke was about someone else?
4) It’s not your fault that it was misunderstood, it’s my fault. That it was misunderstood.
{Paraphrased} "Again, it wasn't the joke that was bad.. it was that it was a joke that you didn't get…. So I apologize for not making it simpler for you morons"
5) So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke.
At this point, he should have just stopped after apologizing to the gov. and her daughters…

Well, Democrat-ruled cities (Washington, DC; New Orleans, etc.) tend to have really high murder rates. So, I think you have a point.
Personally, I wish more White liberals would be as outraged over humans being brutally murdered in Muslim nations like Iran and Sudan. I hope this indifference has nothing to do with the victims not being White.
Explain
Good point. In Iran, Letterman's head would be on a spike by now for that disgusting "joke."
Far Left liberals have no CLUE how good they have it in America.

I'm calling it: "SHENANIGANS!"
Dave, if it was just a coarse joke that would be one thing, but you and the rest of the mind numbed obamabots been mercilessly targeting Sarah Palin's children since she burst on the scene yet at the same time bending over backwards IGNORING the fair game screw-ups and policy disasters of your most holy messiah. You and your ilk will weep and wring hands over the thought of someone making fun of Obama's children or Michelle Obama's ugly smirk, yet you advocate the rape of Sarah Plain's 14 year old daughter.
And no, I don't believe you when you said that you didn't know Willow was at the game. That's a bold faced lie. You have a larger staff of writers than the President has, and they all scan the papers for topical tidbits for you to twist in your sick mind. You are saying that you expect us to believe that a room full of writers missed this front page story?
Just shut up Dave, America is sick and tired of your black hate filled heart. Be a MAN for once and resign. Go somewhere and age quietly while America recovers from the damage you and your gang of idiots have inflicted upon it.
Well, the Huffington Post has described Michelle Obama as a "baby mama" despite her being MARRIED to the President. That's is the worse insult you make to a woman, especially a Black woman.
By contrast, you never hear HuffPo call unwed mother Angelina Jolie a baby mama even though the label truly fits.
Blogger Gina McCauley offers a great explanation for the double standard:
"Why do I repeatedly point out the Huffington Post’s animus towards Black women and girls? Because they feel entitled to it. At least red necks know they’re out of the “main stream.” The KNOW their politically incorrect and racist. Hipster racism is a far more dangerous variety because they think their trafficking in stereotypes makes them “cool.” As if they’ve transcended race….except when they haven’t. But what could we expect from a site that has Russell Simmons misogynist-in-chief handing out spiritual advice."

Preach, sister!
This may have already been mentioned, but if Letterman has to explain his apology like he has to explain his joke, it's not much of an apology.
And it only registered when he was listening to Mark Shields on PBS? Talk about out of touch….
David Letterman's second apology must be to make up for his first apology. Why? His first apology was not sincere, but defensive tripe from a sad, spoiled brat. This second apology should have been the first. It's too little too late Dave. You're doing this for self-preservation, a favorite hobby for Leftists.
Did someone else write this apology too? Enough. You're toast.
Letterman by admission intended the joke to be about the 18-yr-old daughter — implying that she's a slut, just like he says the mother is in other jokes. He makes this "apology" basking in the applause and comfort of his studio audience, knowing it will afford him an easy setting. Meanwhile, his arrogance still shows through. This guy's a jerk and a coward, one who you know damn well would not be able to tolerate a sex joke about his own wife or mother or son. He preys on Palin — or thinks he does — as an easy target before his own audience. The hell with him.
"It's my fault . . . that I was misunderstood."
Yeah. That sounded genuine. This guy was never on my must-watch list, but this "apology" of his is still as pathetic as he is. Not buying it. I never expected a real apology from him, though I wondered if he'd offer some lame, "I'm sorry that I'm misunderstood," excuse.
It really should not have made the joke about any woman it does not matter what her age.
I think Dave apologized only as Dave knows how. His mind has been steeped in leftist ideology for so long, this is what he thinks and feels is a sincere apology. I have to give him credit, he did in fact man up as much as he was capable. He has a disadvantage from the brain damage that has been done to him for so many years. It must have been hard to form an idea out of the scope of what he has believed and has become.
I feel the next right move would be for Sarah to accept his apology and maybe tell people not to pick on Dave. That would set her far above the hate of the left and make them look even more embarrassing and hypocritical.
It might even show Dave how a real and sincere human being really acts.
Umm, you people really, REALLY need lives.
A-Rod deserves an apology as well. His tastes are for old hags.
i'll bet you think olbermann's worst person in the world routine is the height of hilarity. mark shields (of the the shameful comment about albania joining the coalition against sadamm) tweaked dave's conscience. mark shields, professional jerk.
Only because of extreme presure on him and the network has he done this.
Fire his sorry ass.
I'd say she's very talented. She can give a speech even if the teleprompter goes t*ts-up without humming and hawing as Obama does. She's a very good public speaker and when she's not giving interviews from hostile interviewers with gotcha questions, she's very knowledgeable. Does she need to work on her more nationalized subjects and issues? Sure. That's probably why you see much more of her today. McCain plucked her out of Alaska with short notice. But she'll catch on and seems to be doing a very good job of it lately.
Des, your last paragraph = nail on head.
Thanks, man

Didn't really respond to my points, buddy.
LOL
I don't put you in the troll category. But you're absolutely wrong about Palin. I think your perception of her is driven by your partisanship.
I mean, saying a guy who never had a job….ever is superior to a WOMAN, who's worked hard for everything she's gotten in life is , to me, kinda shallow.
Obama is an empty suit. Fact.
LOL. Nice, Patrick
I hear the ocean!!

Opps! I said a baaaaad word and got censored. Latterman is still and will always be an azzhole.
Time for your thorazine.
It's teenager text-speak. They use it when someone is embarrassed (either falling or being humiliated by others). I find it pretty weak in a discussion (especially an internet one) because the truth is, these things are almost never "won" or "lost," merely two people agreeing to disagree (usually with a lot of profanity involved).
Yes, it really is. If she answers "Local ones," the story the next day will be that she doesn't know anything about the world around her. If she reads internet columns (most of the best thinkers today have internet columns in addition to newspaper/magazine ones), the story will be that she believes crap she reads on the net instead of "real journalism." If she doesn't read the NY Times or Washington Post (and really, what reason would you have to trust either at this point in history?) but chooses to say she does to not offend people who do, someone will find out she doesn't have a subscription and it will be played out as her lying because she doesn't read. If you've seen the full, uncensored interview, you'd know that many of Couric's more aggressive questions (like asking about abortion several times) were edited out of the final product, making it seem more convivial than it was.
I agree that Palin gacked the interview, and it showed something about what she lacks as a politician (as did the debate when she didn't know the avalanche of lies and half-truths Biden was throwing out as fact). That said, her two painful interviews can easily be compared to Obama's with the same "journalists" and the difference in the questions asked and the tone they were posed in is staggering.
She's not my ideal candidate, but as someone who's lived in Obama's area his entire Chicago career I can assure you that if you believe he's "talented" and "experienced," you are painfully naive.
I can oversimplify things too.
And you usually do. If you would care to be offended on behalf of Eliot Spitzer, that is your right. The joke involved two parties, a 14 year-old girl who was in New York and Spitzer who was not in the news at all. What I see is you trying to condone a sleazy joke about a child by saying it was mean to the middle-aged criminal too. That is jaw-droppingly bizarre, but if it's the hill you want to fight for, go for it. I'm sure Elliot is grateful.
Conan and Leno made jokes the week it was announced that Bristol was pregnant, but she was literally the biggest headlines, so it's a completely different situation. You still might consider them offensive, but when someone is front page news, it makes it much more understandable. In this case, the trip was just to raise money for charity and Willow was barely mentioned (which is probably how the writer's blew the joke…assuming you buy his claims). Letterman mentioning it was a gratuitous shot at a child as a way to smear her mother over political differences. That (along with the vulgarity) is the reason this was so much different.
Have you looked at the murder rates for Dallas? Miami?
I suspect the real problem is that larger cities have more crime, and (at the moment) the larger cities tend to be Democrat-ruled.
That's a pretty weak example. Didn't someone ask Katie what books SHE read and she ducked into an S&M leather store?
Obama has been coddled by the press. One person, who wasn't a journalist, but a plumber was torn apart for asking him one tough question. Others were kicked off his campaign plane. She was cavity searched from the time she was announced to the time it was over. All-in-all, from being plucked on short notice from a rural state to the limelight, she did fine for what she was up against. But she is growing and learning how things are done in Washington DC.
Yes. But wouldn't hold it against her if she didn't read the NYT or LAT's or listened to NPR.
That's not true. If he would stop being the next Euro-socialist, he'd have much more support. He told us how utterly important the stimulus was, then took off for 4 days before signing it. Then they've only spent 5% of it! Where's the stimulus? There isn't any. It's a Democrat payback bill to contributors. Nothing more. He's just another Democrat, liberal hack. Nothing more.

In summary, it used to say: this has nothing to do with what I think of Kerry or Gore or Obama. It only has to do with Letterman's joke and the context of Palin's response. Read the WaPo article cited above and make an intelligent decision.
