Letterman Apologizes to Palin Family
by Big HollywoodUPDATE: Video after jump.
Full text of Letterman’s explanation, which will air on tonight’s show:
“All right, here – I’ve been thinking about this situation with Governor Palin and her family now for about a week – it was a week ago tonight, and maybe you know about it, maybe you don’t know about it. But there was a joke that I told, and I thought I was telling it about the older daughter being at Yankee Stadium. And it was kind of a coarse joke. There’s no getting around it, but I never thought it was anybody other than the older daughter, and before the show, I checked to make sure in fact that she is of legal age, 18. Yeah. But the joke really, in and of itself, can’t be defended. The next day, people are outraged. They’re angry at me because they said, ‘How could you make a lousy joke like that about the 14-year-old girl who was at the ball game?’ And I had, honestly, no idea that the 14-year-old girl, I had no idea that anybody was at the ball game except the governor and I was told at the time she was there with Rudy Giuliani … and I really should have made the joke about Rudy …” (audience applauds) “But I didn’t, and now people are getting angry and they’re saying, ‘Well, how can you say something like that about a 14-year-old girl, and does that make you feel good to make those horrible jokes about a kid who’s completely innocent, minding her own business,’ and, turns out, she was at the ball game. I had no idea she was there. So she’s now at the ball game, and people think that I made the joke about her. And, but still, I’m wondering, ‘Well, what can I do to help people understand that I would never make a joke like this?’ I’ve never made jokes like this as long as we’ve been on the air, 30 long years, and you can’t really be doing jokes like that. And I understand, of course, why people are upset. I would be upset myself.
“And then I was watching the Jim Lehrer ‘Newshour’ – this commentator, the columnist Mark Shields, was talking about how I had made this indefensible joke about the 14-year-old girl, and I thought, ‘Oh, boy, now I’m beginning to understand what the problem is here. It’s the perception rather than the intent.’ It doesn’t make any difference what my intent was, it’s the perception. And, as they say about jokes, if you have to explain the joke, it’s not a very good joke. And I’m certainly – ” (audience applause) “– thank you. Well, my responsibility – I take full blame for that. I told a bad joke. I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception. And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke. It’s not your fault that it was misunderstood, it’s my fault. That it was misunderstood.” (audience applauds) “Thank you. So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I’m sorry about it and I’ll try to do better in the future. Thank you very much.” (audience applause)

I still won't watch the dorktard. And I almost believe his apology. If "almost" is defined as it is in "Iran almost has free elections."
Watching Jim Lehrer? What him and Bill Maher and two other kooky wanna be intellectuals?
I think I heard this in Chicago when I was in college. John Wayne Gacy said that he took pause when he heard that Richard Speck was troubled by the things he was doing. But then he went ahead and dumped another body in the crawlspace.
Making the joke about any of her children of any age was wrong. He would never have told that joke to her face. Palin, being the class act, will gracefully accept the apology.
Johnny Carson must be rolling over in his grave.
So he still stands by the "slutty flight attendant" joke?
He's still a pathetic creep.
This apology does seem a load of crapola- who makes jokes about someone's children of ANY age if they themselves are not a political figure (ala Megan McCain)? He just needs ratings and WE need to focus on way more important things… election in Iran, lousy economy, failing education, and on and on and on.
Two things:
Thing One: Since when does 18 make you the legal age to be the butt of a joke? Is that part of the Living Document? Please, we were all upset when SNL poked fun at Chelsey's looks. Some jokes just aren't funny (OK, maybe about Giuliani's looks…kidding!).
Thing Two: I think Dave did right. He sets an example. Whether you believe him or not, he sets the example for others (Maher, are you listening?) to follow.
Now, get funny again, Dave. They say comedy's a young man's game, but I've seen too many older funny guys to buy that.
Too little, too late.
And still crying "poor me".
The whole apology reeks of self pity.
He still doesn't give a rat's arse about the Palin women.
Turd.
Begging forgiveness rather than showing restraint? If anyone with "teh Magic (D)" next to their name does it = Responsible.
Ugh. Well, that's much better than before. Let's just hope he doesn't change his mind and offer the sucker punch when he thinks he can.
Letterman is so full of leftwing Kool-aid that in an effort to destroy a political foe he is willing to destroy his own career. Hollywood's version of a suicide bomber.
I still call BS on this "apology" because he is losing advertising from Embassy Suites and other advertisers. Protest is on tomorrow. Letterman is pathetic.
I'm confused by our new political reality. So now it's the Republicans who play the victimhood game and generate phony outrage over politically incorrect jokes? Isn't this sort of "the sky is falling because someone offended me" a more natural fit on the other side of the aisle?
This is just pathetic — a party trying to get rid of the perception that a shock-jock is its head now has its most popular politician engaging in a stupid war of words with a late-night talk show host?
Nope not enough! Try falling on your sword…….That should fix it………
Squirm Dave, you deserve it. You've been mean spirited for years and it's finally caught up with you.
So if a comedian tells a racist joke on national TV but didn't intend it to offend then that's OK? Or if a joker tells an anti-semitic joke but didn't intend to offend then we should understand 'in his heart' he's a good guy not meaning to offend just earning his 30 pieces of silver. Or if a 30 year comedian tells a joke that is really a put-down of all women then his misogyny isn't real because he didn't intend it. Just think, his wife kisses that mouth. He apologized (sort of) which is a good thing then he tries to qualify it to make himself look less responsible. You would think he would have learned from Jamie Fox's foot-in-mouth episode.
I think it is interesting that it took television program for him to realize it was wrong. He wasn't able to figure it out on his own, or wasn't able to believe the internet or radio or NOW or any number of sources. It took Jim Lehrer.
I'm not sure wath that means, but it is interesting.
So, he stood up and apologized good for him. So does it end here? or does he get canned?
I don't think he should get fired until either ratings or ad revenue drops. But I didn't think Imus should have been fired either.
Sheesh. Everybody is so sensitive. Wah, wah, wah. He hurt my feelings.
Except Palin's feelings weren't hurt. She just saw an opportunity to make political hay. Letterman shouldn't have apologized.
too little, too late– he's not been funny for what, forever? By the way, what's with the audience orchestrated applause? But, we have spent way to much time on this guy and his b.s. apology. Time to put him where he belongs; out of sight and out of mind.

You just keep on believing that, OK.
I don't think Letterman has ever apologized for anything, so I don't take this apology too lightly. At least he manned up and took responsibility for his mistake. It's just a shame that his job had to be threatened before he did it.
You liberals have always said we should be more like you.
I think that's about as good as we're going to get from him. Is it genuine? I don't know. What's certain is that he's genuinely afraid of losing his job—which means that all our emails, phone calls and letters paid off.
It feels good.
I wouldn't say it's too late. It's taken me a week to get my hackles down before. But it is a kind of sparse apology. More than I thought we'd see, and more than most libs would proffer… but sparse.
Lame apology, from a lame comedian.
We choose whether to be offended. The Palin's chose to be. I find it hard to give them too much grief based on the other attacks on their children, but yes they chose how to react. That said, it was a really inappropriate comment and he should have been aware enough to know it.

I'm willing to give the guy a break. Not because he deserves it, but because he was stupid. The joke wasn't funny no matter which daughter he was using, but I think this is a very good response. Is it authentic? Probably as much as possible for Letterman? Is he really contrite? Probably as much as he is able. Should he have made the apology on day one? No. He should never have told the joke.
The real problem is that the Left and the media on that side of the aisle have abetted him and all the others who have felt free to use this kind of offensive humor. There are two issues. First, any joke you make where a Republican/conservative is the butt is acceptable – no matter how offensive. Second, if you are on the side of Angels (Liberal), you can get away with anything. These together allow the writers to create a joke, and for him to tell the joke with neither one asking if it is beyond the pale. They are just colorblind to the offensiveness. The most amazing thing to me was not his weazley response after this came up. It was how the talking heads on the Left tried to turn Dave into a victim of some sort of attack. Consistent with their world view, the joke that triggered this brouhaha was never considered.

Kudos to Letterman for manning up. The way the Palin family has been attacked by the Left is scary…such unadulterated hatred from people who are supposedly open-minded, live and let live types. They're supposedly for equal rights, feminists even. Give 'em a strong woman that disagrees with their positions and they'll attack her mercilessly. Liberals are hypocrites with no class.
I've read his apology twice. There's no real recognition of the Palin family as human beings, or their children being non-targets for vile humor. He still implies that Bristol is a worthy target.
His apology is all about how he's let himself down, failed to live up to HIS standards. Feh.
.
"It’s the perception rather than the intent"
The industry of illusion would not have it any other way.
He probably wouldn't have if not for the fact he was losing sponsors. So he's mean spirited, too cowardly to take a stand and a corporate whore.
http://www.seattlepi.com/tvguide/407238_tvgif15.h...
David Letterman is a pinhead. Of course the intent of the joke was to trash the Conservative Palin family pure and simple. About the only laughable aspect of the joke is that Liberals just fear this family so much they feel they must trash her and her children at every opportunity so for David Letterman to now make it sound like this intent wasn't the main reason for the joke , well, only an idiot thinkless liberal, who by the way would be outrage if the joke was about his or her daughter , would think otherwise. So it is indefensible for Liberal comedians like Letterman to take cheap shots at some politician family to make his pathetic point and lets hope he pays the price for it in a big big way.
The left-wing pundits have been yammering all w/end long about "Palin should just shut up and move on."
Palin hasn't mentioned this in 72 hours and probably won't mention it again. It's Dave who can't move on.
Just like every web site master out there knows, all you have to do is mention Palin and your web site hits increase. Dave will be the one to run this into the ground.
He knows he'll never be able to get you heartless hounds off his back.
Sorry Dave, don't believe you for a second. You were still rubbing it in and mocking Palin (and her daughter) AFTER the first wave of criticism. You're typical liberal scum, dishonest to the core. Just learn to live with that fact.
PS I hear President "Um Um" is on his way to Iran to give poor Ahmadinejad a backrub. What a weak and incompetent administration.
I'm not a liberal, just an independent conservative who is hoping that the Republicans will fade into the distance and open up some room for a viable third and/or fourth party out there to evolve beyond the farce that is current American politics (see this entire argument and the current GOP in general as examples). But go on, keep whining about this; can't you tell how well it's working? The Republicans are almost there, especially with bands of outraged victims like posters on this site as the base and with Michael Stizeele at the helm. And after this spat with Letterman, now Sarah Palin has all kinds of mainstream political credibility and the support of feminists nationwide. Right? Right?
for what it's worth, may I say that I watched Letterman interview Rush Limbaugh in late 1993, and Letterman seemed genuinely interested in what Rush had to say. I'm not going to defend Letterman, I haven't watched much late night tv in a good long while, but everyone makes mistakes, and Letterman at least isn't the President. I've been a right-winger for at least 40 years (since I was in early high school) and maybe I'm just remembering how much fun he was on NBC 20 years ago, but I'd give him at least a third of a pass on this. "To err is human, but Andy is Devine…" (another sign of old age.)

—"It’s the perception rather than the intent"
That sealed it for me. It's a non-apology. I can't resist a contrite heart and I wanted to believe him. But he's just blaming it on our faulty "perception."
I don't give a rat's @ss whether she was 14 or 18. The children of Sarah Palin ARE NOT FAIR GAME. So shove it up your @ss you gap-toothed freak.
This Alinsky thingy is fun…the left has practiced this technique for years…but we have cracked the code…..I say get him off the air….he is a billionaire, he has an island, a young wife and son, his cup over floweth…let's" distribute his wealth" to another late night host…..
He's lying. He knew Willow (or at the very least, a daughter) was with Gov. Palin at Yankees game. AND he is only acting like he made the one joke about 14 year old Willow Palin getting "knocked up" by 33 year old A-Rod in the seventh inning.
He ALSO said "slutty flight attendant" outfits when referring to Gov. Palin's shopping habits and taste.
He ALSO said: The hardest part of the NY Trip was keeping Eliot Spitzer away from Palin's daughter. (Eliot Spitzer is 50 years old and got caught with a young prostitute.)
Dave Letterman: Stay away from sexist "jokes." Why don't you hire a TRUE feminist who KNOWS when something is wrong and out of line. You would know when a RACIST "joke" is out of line. Get with the times, Letterman.
Definatly not a surprise, You couldn't teach them simple math if you wanted to.
Switching gears to victim phase now…

Steve Crowder! Yes? Yes?!!!
You have to give credit where credit is due. Seriously, given the way most lefties behave I never expected that he would give a complete and honest apology, and I'll accept that he's being honest when he gives this one.
The thing is, he does hate Sarah Palin. So of course he won't apologize for his other mean 'joke', just the one that got him in trouble. So, yeah, I still don't like him. And no it's not because of the Palin thing – as people have been saying for a while, he's just not funny and hasn't been for ages. He's just bitter and mean and a partisan shill.
But again, an apology is all you can do when you screw up. Pity it took him so long. I hope the Palin family accepts the apology and everybody moves on.
You're probably right. But then again Letterman has pretty much insulted, in one form or another, the type of people who are on this board. I really don't care what he says and don't take much offense to it. It's just the typical mean-spirited (see how I stole that liberal catch-phrase) crap that this guy has been putting out over the past few years. If he, unlike Michael Jordon, pisses off half of his viewership and they stop watching, then good.

Boo f**king Hoo. He's gotten a lot less flack than Limbaugh did when he made that completely harmless Donovan McNabb statement. It's also nothing compared to the irrational mouth-foaming hysteria over the NY Post cartoon about the chimp being shot. Grow up.
Yup. We learned it from the best (you Libs).
A bunch of right-wing hypocrites. The crap that spews out of almost every right-wing commentator's mouth is a hundred times worse than any poor-taste joke that Letterman made. I can give you a hundred examples, but I won't waste my time here.
He's right, you've become, what you thought was dumb, a fraction of the sum.
your absolutely right, Maybe slaughtering some wolves from a helicopter will make her feel better.
Bonus points for the Built to Spill shout-out
Yep, you guys are just like the radicals, I know!
Does this mean he's no longer Obama's official Court Jester?
Not enough dirt on Obama, so they switch to letterman, what sound logic
Yes.
Now you know better than that. Hunting wolves is illegal. It's coyotes she's after, and she would never shoot them from a chopper. She would use an electronic rabbit call, and shoot them from a blind, like you're supposed to. You should try it some time.
Jesus….what does it take for you people?
Where are the jokes about Zero and Plugs? Between the two there is a real goldmine of jokes. Yet Littleman and his writers can't thnk of one?? A second apology, because the first one wasn't sincere. I doubt this second apology was his idea. Losing sponsers is bad for business.
Palin's feelings weren't hurt?
How the hell would you know?
Are you psychic and reading her mind? Are you just assuming her feelings weren't hurt because 'them rethuglikkkans don't have no feelins like us real human beings'? Do you think she's actual a fembot programmed from Rethuglikkkan Central Command?
Please share with us your insight into the heart of a woman you don't know and couldn't begin to understand.
Jesus what does it take to convince you people? Did you want him to bring Palin on the show and hug her to make it ok? A whole hour dedicated to the apology? Jeezy Creezy.
At least he has admitted his mistake and apologised. I am yet to see a single Right Winger talker apologies and admit they were wrong.
YOU'RE FIRED.
Apologies didn't save Imus.
Letterman should just retire.
Thing is Dave has not written a joke or a Top Ten list in many years. His ex Harvard Lampoon guys, they of the trust funds and the nannies who did everything for them before they went off to Groton are the old money, liberal elitist mouthpieces of Dave.
Dave hates any Republican and especially any female Republican so he lets the bitterness, cynicism, and misogyny of these punks just feed into his own warped sense of comedy.
–"It was a joke."
If it was just a joke, then they'd be telling these "jokes" about Democrats too. But they don't. The targets of these "jokes" are strictly rightwing/Republican. Why? Because these jokes are political warfare masquerading as humor. Behind the "joke" is a white hot hatred for the subject of their "joke". They are told for the purposes of demeaning and destroying their target. It's pure politics of personal destruction and they should not be let off the hook with these non-apologies.
It has nothing to do with being offended. Only the Palins have the right to be offended. It has to do with common decency and civil behavior. Where I'm from an 'adult', especially a male doesn't pick on a child. He doesn't make a child the butt of a joke, it's beneath him. He doesn't beat a child, verbally or physically. He doesn't take advantage of a child's misfortune by making fun of it. This Letteman fiasco is about raising the standard since the aged poster boy for crass conduct steps over the line.
Dave, a joke that you have to explain isn't funny and an apology that you have to keep giving isn't a very good one.
Of course, blame the victim because, well, Sarah Palin is always wrong, right?
Plenty of dirt on Obama. It's just that you and the Obama-fellating media had more dirt in your ears from keeping your heads in the sand.
David Letterman is a fraud. He says he would never say such a horrible joke like the one about Palin daughter.. but as we all know he did go out and say it and enjoyed saying it. SO do you really believe him. THIS GUY NEEDS TO GO. He knew what he was doing. FIRE HIM and if he isn't fire then we need to SHUT OFF CBS NETWORK VIEWING ALTOGETHER.
A third party pretty much assures a second Obama term.
You prove the lie when you call yourself an "independent conservative," yet you "hop(e) that the Republicans will fade into the distance." What a crock. Why not the Democraps? You are neither independent nor conservative. You're just a liar.
excuse me, this was a joke about someone's children. Do you honestly think that Obama's girls would be fair game? The reporter who said Hillary was pimping Hillary was fired for that comment and that was on a MSNBC.Would Letterman dare to make jokes about Pelosi's children or grand-children? How about Biden's daughter? Fair game with sexual jokes?
It's not stupid for parents to stand up to sexual jokes about one's children I don't care what political party you represent, what color, what nationaity. Kids are off limits for sexual jokes or innuendos.
The new political reality is the attack on women in this country who are in the political arena. I am sick and tired of the smearing of the women who run for political office in this country. NOW put Letterman in the hall of Shame, they are also protesting.
Oh and btw, it's not that it is politically incorrect, it's morally incorrect!
This isn't about Palin, this about her girls. I never thought Letterman would stoop so low.
Honest remorse and humility.
You know, the things you usually expect in an apology?
The american taliban strikes again.
Did the fax from Media Matters not come through yet or something? They have a website where you can get totally out of context hit quotes on your most hated Republicans! Stop being such a lazy leftie troll.
What's there to be wrong about? My indignation is sincere and righteous, and today's Letterman apology, for me six days too late and too little with the "perception" crack, validates all those who shared Governor and Todd Palin's anger.
Bring Palin on the show? You know what? I'm sure that's on his mind and his bookers are working overtime to make that happen. If they're successful, you'll hear about it sooner rather than later. Betcha Letterman will now sell his soul to get the ratings a Palin guest shot would bring, just like it did for McCain.
Don Imus met with sincerely apologized to the Rutgers Women's Basketball Team(which they accepted). Letterman's new "apology" wasn't sincere, more of a CYA so advertisers and ratings don't drop.
This is quite big of him. I commend him for issuing a formal, sincere, apology.
For those who say it's "too late", consider that this is the first moment he had airtime since Thursday evening (Friday was a pre-taped show). Letterman's powerful, but not that powerful.
I still, however, would love it if Palin went on his show. She can truly rip the comedy juice out of the current comedy universe.
Psychic? Reading her mind? It's not necessary. Just follow the breadcrumbs: Letterman said "knocked up"; Palin said "rape". Why would she escalate the intensity of what Letterman said? Was it to protect her child? If that's what she wanted, she shouldn't have made a big media production out of it. But Palin did. She could have privately called Letterman — he would have taken her call I expect — and told him she was really offended. But she didn't. She instead issued a press release. If Palin really was offended and really cared about the impact on her daughter, she would have dealt with this out of the limelight. But she didn't. This whole thing would have been a minor blip if Palin hadn't inflated it.
You think Palin didn't consider the political benefit of publicly calling out a comedian for making a joke? Feh. Palin isn't that naive. Remember that this is the same woman who was happy to parade her daughter's out-of-wedlock pregnancy when it suited her political ambitions. This is the same woman who twisted Bristol's boyfriend's arm until he "proposed" to Bristol…. just until the election was over.
I don't need to be psychic.
??? What's Adam Gadahn have to do with this? Go back to the DUmmies, you moron.
One good thing………a sincere apology that one believes in can be cathartic, but being forced into an insincere apology is simply humiliating. Right now I suspect Letterman is eating himself up from the inside……….
All we want is for him to sound sincere.
So basically yeah, given that this is Letterman, there's very little chance of that.
What does the ACLU have to do with this?
Hate to burst your bubble there chief, but there is such a thing as statutory rape. That's where an adult has sex with a minor. Even if it's mutually consented on by both parties, it's still considered rape. Ergo, Palin calling a spade a spade. Is there something wrong with that?
Here's an article you might want to read: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/arti...
Pay special attention to the paragraph that begins, "A more cynical view…"
That would be me. A more cynical viewer.
He's never made jokes like this in his career? I could have sworn that I heard both he and Jay Leno mocked Bristol Palin during the election when it was made public that she was pregnant. And at the time she was 17, since that seems to be his saving grace defense.
Wrong about what cjerk? Examples?
And actually no, this one apology isn't enough. Go back to Palin's introduction in August. There should be at least a thousand apologies.
Lies about banning books
Lies about her using racial slurs
Lies about her being an anti-semite
Lies about Bristol being Trig's mother
Lies about her cheating on her husband
Lies about her shooting wolves from helicopters (a policy put in place when she was in kindergarten)
Lies about her son being a meth addict
Lies about her forcing rape victims to pay their medical costs out of pocket
Lies about the shopping spree
Lies about her being a seccessionist
Lies about her believing in literal six-day Creationism and speaking in tongues
Lies about calling the Iraq war a holy war from God
Photoshopped bikini pictures (not that I'd mind seeing the real thing)
Her church being burned down
"Sarah Palin is a c**t" t-shirts
A website asking for donations to give Bristol an abortion
Smarmy remarks about seducing her children's friends
"Spay the bitch" signs
"Go back to your igloo, whore" signs
Hanging effigy
NYC display inviting observers to shoot at displays of her and her youngest daughter
Jokes about gang-raping her
Jokes about her Down's syndrome son
Enough?
Oh, but I forgot. It's only the right that hates.
For this Arrogant Creep to make this apology you know the Pressure must be Heavy from a lot of Quarters. He's gotten away with a lot of Mean-Spirited Jokes through the years. What goes around comes around . Couldn't happen to a Better Guy.
