Conservatives often talk about what they don’t like about Hollywood. That’s okay, but it’s not productive. Maybe it’s time we talked about what we do like? More to the point, let’s point out when Hollywood has gotten it right. And that brings me to the...

I have bad memories and bad vibes of this movie and I can't remember exactly why. I have always had very high regard for Alfre Woodward, Kevin Kline, and Steve Martin. Mary McDonnell is also a fine actress who got some nice recognition after "Dances with Wolves."
Actually, I think my problem is that Danny Glover is in the film. I have tried and tried to divorce my feelings about films from the personal lives of the actors. Unfortunately, I find Glover so hateful and loathsome, I'm unable to do that here. Glover kind of reminds me of "Jeremiah Wright meets Harry Belafonte." I guess I had also gotten tired of so many films being set in Los Angeles or New York that it creates an unconcious "strike" against the film. Is this fair? No. Is it my view? Yes.
p.s. don't even get me started on the snarky Mary Louise-Parker.
To anyone who says that Gov. Palin is keeping the conterversy alive with Letterman. I haven't heard her bring it up herself. It's either Letterman bringing it back up or the State Controled Media that's doing it. All Gov. Palin is doing is responding to them, not bringing it up.
I wish the left wing MSM could be honest, but that's too high a threshold for them.
That whooshing sound you hear is Palin's political career going down the toilet. Maybe we can bring in Joe the Plumber to unclog the pipes. Is he licensed yet?
Well, it's an open thread so here is my contribution. It's Flag Day so please fly the standard. Also HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE US ARMY! 234 YEARS YOUNG! HOOAH!
SUA SPONTE
I always get this movie confused with "Indian Summer"
So millions of people around the country are rallying to her defense, and she's winning sympathy even from NOW — maybe that whooshing sound is the wind blowing through your empty skull, you moron.
That whoosing sound you hear is Obama's agenda going down the toilet, maybe we can bring in Palin to save the country.
Don't ever stop to add up all the times you've been wrong; it'd kill you to face the truth.
All right old soldier, there is a nice uplifting message in direct contrast to fascist's diatribe about toilet's flushing.
"ESSAYONS" (let us try) Unitied States Army, Engineers.
Well hey, she's not ruined two car companies, bankrupted the future of tens of millions of kids with HIS (yes antifascist, it's now HIS economic plan, not Bush's) and is poised to catapult himself into that Jimmy Carter category. Can you say one-term AF?
If he had 1/10th the political skills that Bill Clinton had, he wouldn't be trying to bully and bury businesses, he'd actually see this country needs vibrant companies, not trying to destroy capitalism.
So yeah, Danny Glover's little tirade in this movie suits him…what do you expect from a man who seemed to worship Hugo Chavez?
Speaking of movies and movie stars – Roger Friedman blames his firing from Fox on pressure from $cientologists. http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/2009/06/14/2009...
While that might sound far-fetched, it's a pretty good article. When I was involved with the cult, it was a regular practice to go after people's jobs and careers if they spoke out against the cult. It is, in fact, Hubbard policy.
Great movie that totally misses the point in the end. Moral of the story. We are meaningless blips on the ass of the Grand Canyon so it naturally follows that we should help our fellow man. Makes sense to me.Could have been a masterpiece if they came to a logical conclusion.
Thanks for the reminder oldsoldier.
Jed, the troll has become so irrelevant to me that dropping large ordinance on its head seems like a waste of time and training. I reserve my comments this day to honoring the standard and 234 years of decent men and women in this still great land for the willingness to lay it all on the line.
Are you referring the only man in America with the absolute courage and intellectual curiousity to question the socialist policies of this TOTUS? Who upon asking this simple and straightforward question was subjected to ugly fascism unleashed while the left applauded….first they came for the plumbers……
I would be honored to do the same.
And here I thought the left was for the working man…
Am I the only one that also thinks The Big Chill was completely insufferable? I've never been able to sit through the whole thing.
Yeah, the man working at Starbucks, Borders and art studios across the nation!
And all the men in leadership at all the unions.
I suppose you believe America is fascist for defeating the Nazis too? Evil should be defeated everywhere.
Nolte loves the 'Big Chill'. For shame.
We kinda do that…a lot AF. It's just sad that many on the left pick and choose when they wish to support this country and all that she does.
Too bad the fascists reside on the left side of the aisle huh.
The thing I couldn't reconcile in "Grand Canyon" was that we were supposed to see Kevin Kline as a protagonist, but he was cheating on his wife. I'm sure the point was supposed to be something along the lines of good people do stupid things too… I get that, but prefer that my heroes have a better starting point than that. I've never seen "The English Patient" because I co-worker saw it and said he it had a protagonist-is-having-an-affair storyline and he couldn't stand it for that reason– I actually had a lot more respect for my co-worker after that. It gives me hope when people I know are actually offended by bad behavior.
I've never actually heard of any of the anti-American rants by Danny Glover– so he hasn't ruined any movies for me yet.
I'm with you regarding The Big Chill. What a bunch of self-indulgent crybabies in that movie! The only good part of it was the music.
It's great that you support everything Obama does as leader of our country. The same can't be said for your fellow conservatives.
I am with you on Danny Glover. I have a hard time sitting through "Lethal Weapon" anymore. I used to love that movie. Seems Hollywood has a knack for destroying images these days…………..Have to agree also on Mary McDonnell. I think she's still sane. Don't know? Glover though is obviously "One Fry Short Of A Happy Meal"
"Evil should be defeated everywhere"
Absolutely Right! I suggest we start at "The White House"…………………..
1000 points to oldsoldier1………………
Perspective is a lost art form. Thank you for using it today…………….
Well, you're assuming a lot there…what's it like having a super negative reputation?
And you're confusing supporting a leader and and supporting the country with supporting a man who believes he's the new messiah and being proud of your country just because an Alinsky acolyte is now in the White House.
What's sad is that this President doesn't wish to help anyone or bring us together, he just wants to accumulate as much power as possible.
Are you behind the idea of the President running not one, but TWO car companies AF? If that's not fascism, I don't know what is. Are you thrilled about the President telling people what they can and cannot earn? Do you like the idea of a President who has the media in his pocket and wants to decide whose voice should and should be heard? Is that all kosher with you AF?
I laughed when your said threw out the "Bush=Hitler" or Bush was a fascist when everyone can plainly see right now, it's the democrats who are the fascists.
Deal with it AF. Your side is full of the fascists.
Lucky you. I'm pretty good at divorcing actors from their rants when watching a film, but Danny Glover has made that almost impossible. For the sake of your continued enjoyment of his films, do no further research on the matter.
Looking at Iran right now, I wonder if they're headed to another revolution. Their sham democracy has been exposed, and the younger people of the country are angry. Maybe this time they might get it right. On the other hand, the US will probably not help them. After all, Obama seems to accept the results of a rigged election as legit and expects to keep doing one-sided diplomacy with a madman.
Hard to say.
At least it's a warm Sunday afternoon.

Then the Speaker of the House's office. Majority leader of the senate.. Then the Chairman of the House Apporpations committiee (for bad mouthing his fellow marines)
That would be good for a start.
That could be a possibility, Skip. That doesn't make him any more honest or good, but it does make me shrug and say, "D@mn those $cientologists."
*MissQuinn*
Loved Kevin Costner as the corpse. He was brilliant!
Haha, the people are taking back their country and it terrifies you.
I understand probably all of those actors are libs, but when they get as angry/nasty like Glover, I just can no longer watch them, let alone put money in his pocket.
"…the people are taking back their country…" not just yet, but hopefully starting this year, here in Virginia, followed by more wins by conservatives in 2010 and 2012.
Context is everything. I think my co-worker was kind of tired of the hype surrounding TEP, so maybe he was extra cynical about it. I'll have to watch it sometime.
I totally agree with you about the Kline vs. the Parker characters. His betrayal was worse. She was pretty much the archetype of women who have affairs with married men who hang on the hope that someday they'll leave the wife. I've known women like that and they go from one disfunctional relationship to the next never thinking they might be the ones making the mistakes. Like you said, it doesn't justify her actions, but the Kline character represents, to me anyway, all the guys who take advantage of women like that.
Thanks for such a great break-down of The English Patient. It gives me some perspective and now I feel like I can give it a chance.
I'm not terrified AF…keep reaching though. I just wonder when you'll recognize what your side has done to this country since Europe is heading in the opposite direction than us and Canada isn't too keen on national healthcare anymore.
Is your side ready to deal with the consequences of your messiah's not too bright plan or are you going to blame Bush as alway?
We could always asak Jimmy Carter to go in to verify the election. Isn't that what he is good for? What great dynamics such a thing would behold.
i saw members of Anonymous protesting outside one of the scientology buildings on Hollywood yesterday, and the flyer they were handing out talked about Scientology's "doctrine" of Fair Game, which says that a scientologist can try to destroy anyone who opposes them by whatever means necessary without repercussions from within their organization.
A bunch of baby boomers being preachy about how bad the world is after they screwed it up. Insufferable smug jerks.
I have ALWAYS hated this movie. It's liberal rich people complaining about their screwed up lives
while driving Ferraris and living in the Hollywood Hills. (Okay, Danny Glover's character isn't rich, he's just there to make the rich people feel guilty about being rich.) It's pretentious and over-the-top dull. And all the white people are the bad guys. Sheesh, gimme a break. Still, I love movies that were made just before the internet came along. That great scene where Danny Glover speaks to his deaf daughter over the phone using some kind of "word visualizer" is very cool for the sheer "pre-cell phone/text/internet" era.
After I saw this movie, I thought a better title would be "Brentwood Problems" (as in 'Ooh, poor rich people!').
For you readers not living in Los Angeles, Brentwood is a very affluent neighborhood.
The population appears to be mostly people who are very anxious about social status and fixated on materialism; utterly driven by the imporance which social status and materialism has to them…
[Disclaimer: I've met some very likable, respectable people who live there.]
Lawrence Kasdan showed promise earlier in his career, but when he made Grand Canyon, the modest limit of his talent & imagination became clear.
The major black characters (and their relationships with white characters) seem like fantasies driven by a need to assuage the white liberal guilt and race/class anxiety of affluent white people who might typlify Brentwood.
Ughhhh!
THIS link is the best that I've seen on nailing David Letterman.

"Maybe it is mark of great sophistication to allow a wife and mother to be openly ridiculed as a slut in Washington, DC or New York City, but in small town America it can still get one a black eye.
No matter which way I look at it, while turning the other cheek in the face of the relentless media entertainment industry bully may be good for one's soul, it has turned out to be a terrible way to build a political party."
TOTALLY agree with you, TJ, on Danny Glover. Glover gives me the creeps the same way Rev. Wright does. That hatred just reeks from him. I never see any of his movies – which is a twofer. If I don't watch a movie with Glover, I don't lose my money or my lunch.
Actually, AF, the 'whooshing' sound is the hot air blowing between your ears. But think on the positive side – after the Big Zero reduces your existence to that great Socialist state he has in mind, that hot air will come in handy to warm you on those cold nights when you can't find a campfire beneath the underpass to huddle around.

Good stuff if I may be so bold.
And lets not forget that she is not turning her back on Israel.
