It's not really Sherlock Holmes, but I want to see it anyway.
Robert Downey — good. Guy Ritchie? Not holding my breath.
It's a comic-book Holmes, but it does look entertaining — and I love that last line.
Man, I must've missed the Sherlock homes books with him being a bad ass who shoots people and bangs hotties… Still, it does look entertaining.
Excellent trailer, I for one will go see this on opening day!
*as long as it does not leak that it has some sort of political undertow to it, though I am sure it is not likely considering the material and the director. I had to skip the soloist when reviews stated it was anti-bush will see it say in ten years when Bush bashing is out of fashion.
Sherlock Holmes looks refreshingly like good old fashioned movie making, and am so greatful for a action movie that is not overloaded with comic book superhero gadgets.
That's not a Sherlock Holmes movie. That's a Lethal Weapon movie.
I understand why they selected Guy Ritchie. I've always thought that the key to adapting British Literature to the big screen was the inclusion of more bareknuckles boxing matches filmed in intermittent slow motion and set to a Daftpunk soundtrack. But it will only work if there's also a sympathetic character who's forced into confinement for comedic effect. In that case, Ritchie's our guy.
And also because when I think of Sherlock Holmes, I think of guns, explosions, and a Bullet Tooth Tony clone wielding a huge steel hammer.
The last line was priceless. It doesn't seem to bear a whole lot of resemblance to the literary Holmes, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be a good movie either, I'm looking forward to it. But then again by way of full disclosure on my Sherlockian purity, I thought "Without a Clue" was hands down the best Sherlock Holmes movie since the Basil Rathbone era.
Robert Downey Jr. is good enough, in my opinion, that he can overcome the Ritchie Factor. I loved "Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels" and "Snatch" but after that he sort of lost me for the most part.
The trailer started out great and I'm thinking, I could spend two hours with this. I agree with the lampshade commenter about the feel of old-fashioned movie-making. But by the end, meh.
I think I'm okay with a wee bit of contemporary Holmes. Just a wee bit. I haven't lost hope for Guy Ritchie, so this will be anticpated in the B**** home.
You may be right. This does look like a fun movie. I'm just wondering if they've moved too far from the Holmes tradition.
I've got to disagree with Robert Downey being good as Sherlock Holmes. No gravitas. He's more of an Oscar Wild.
But at least they didn't cast Shia Labeouf.
Lol! You're right about Downey. I do think he's entertaining though.
He's right about Shia Labeouf too…
I concur. . . and I laugh out loud.
What's next? Aristole. . . he's back, and he's pis..ed. This time it's personal.
Or Sigmund Freud. . . a shrink who fights crime in his spare time. A cigar is just a cigar, until Freud blows a smoke-ring of whoopass.
Don't get me wrong, I like Downey, just not as Sherlock Holmes.
Well just going from the trailer I'm inclined to think that he's going for a sort of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen kind of feel, hopefully without the painful horribleness of said movie adaptation.
Help, I've been censored! Where are the trolls to protest my disappearing post?!!!
Oscar Wilde as a movie action hero? Done right, that could be screamingly funny.
I like Downey. But I agree with AP — not in this role. Still, he's probably going to be better than Lt. Commander Data.
Brilliant! LOL!
This looks like a hoot if nothing else. Love Robert Downey Jr. to. Anyone see Rocknrolla…I can't stomach the chick in the movie at all which is why I didn't see it.
I'd pay to see that!
You're on to something there. That could be really funny. "To lose one shoot out is a tragedy, to lose two smacks of carelessness."
And again, I'd pay to see any of those as well. LOL
Sadly, so would I. . . so would I.
My comments keep disappearing, I blame Auntie, and no pie.
What I'm thinking is that maybe they're trying to do a slightly League of Extraordinary Gentlemen feel with it. Hopefully without the massive amount of horribleness of said movie adaptation. That move really gets my goat, such a good concept, so horribly done.
Weren't there more comments here a minute ago? I think we've been bugged. . . har dee har har.
Lord Byron: Vampyre Hunter would be another good one. And actually, it makes a lot of sense since I could see him doing that, in a really puffy shirt no less.
I think if you click on the "recent activity" link, you'll see them all. Big hollywood's commenting system is very quirky.
You know, League of EG had real potential. I had no idea what it was when I first watched it, and I was impressed with a lot of the cleverness, much of the acting, and a lot of the ideas.
And they just squandered all of that with poor CGI, poor pacing, and just a general "blah" to the whole film.
It reminds me of Ghandi II from UHF:

Seriously, Guy Ritchie is a slave to his own conventions. He would justify it as a style, but most of us see him as a one trick pony. He made 1.5 good movies and was done.
Jane Austen Vampire Hunter. . . "Terminate With Pride and Extreme Prejudice"
I like Morton Downey Jr. Every thing he has been in has worked for him and for me. If the movie stays up with this trailer, it will be a blockbuster.
I also like that he refuses to participate in the predominate arrogance of most actors in commenting on political affairs of the world or the United States. That alone gives me a reason to watch him in any movie.
He is an actor that can believably protray any character. I saw his last Oscar Nominated movie. It took me a while to actually recognize him.
I saw it, and the best thing I can say about it it is it had a decent soundtrack. Gerard Butler did have a couple of funny lines/moments in it, but that was about it and they were too few and far between to really carry it.
The problem is that sometimes comments don't appear until a second comment is posted. That's why you will often see people posting a second meaningless comment, to make the first appear. It's annoying.
And it could be argued that "Snatch" (which I do like) was simply a reshoot of "Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels" with a bigger budget and a slight reworking of the script. If those are the 1.5 you're referring to.
I haven't seen UHF in years! I really liked that movie. Good find Brisco!
Also, I agree about Richie. He's good enough at what he does, but he never leaves his comfort zone.
Seems a bit . . . um, . . . Steampunk.
Yep. Snatch was a good movie, but he gets a 0.5 because he ripped himself off.
Yes, which is why some people, like me, wait.
Not sure but is this an open thread or just about the trailer? We need a good open thread because I am dying to find out what people have heard about the new cartoon "The Goode Family". I saw a preview of this yesterday (it's slated to come on ABC) and it appears to be a Mike Judge cartoon judging by the animation and from what I gathered in the preview it appears to exist solely to make fun of liberals.
Please tell me someone else has seen this!
I believe he has, but failed miserably. Case in point was Swept Away with Madonna.
I have to say my first thought was, "Thank heavens it's not Rupert Everett again." Having said that, I'm not sure RD Jr can pull it off. I always enjoyed watching Jeremy Brett in that role. He's still the definitive Holmes for me. Of all the live actors available who might play the role . . . my brain's running dry right now, but maybe David Tennant. Or Chris Eccleston.
From the trailer: "Samuel Coleridge is: The Albatros! Mild mannered writer by day, high flying curbstomping avenger by night. Taking to the streets of London with his steampunk powered flying birdsuit, he and his wisecracking sidekick William Wordsworth, Fight Regency Era Crime!"
(This film has been rated PG-13 for: Poetical Violence, Partial Nudity and Some Drug Use)
I just found more info on the Goode Family and it is in fact a Mike Judge cartoon and does appear to exist solely to make fun of liberals. They even have a dog named Che. I'm officially psyched about this. Here is a link to the Wiki:

I stand corrected. You're right. I forgot about Swept Away. Miserable.
I enjoyed Alan Moore's graphic novel but they really butchered it when making LXG. Including the stock PC-ization of eliminating one of the main villains, Fu Manchu, with an attendant alteration of the plot. Most of the characters were radically altered from their graphic novel characterizations. It's really a textbook example of how not to adapt a literary property to the big screen.
Speak for yourself none of my comments are meaningless, but sometimes you need the Special Decoder Ring to figure out what the meaning is. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
This looks more like a Victorian version of James Bond than Sherlock Holmes. Still, I've enjoyed Robert Downey, Jr.'s recent work as well as "Snatch" and "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels" so I'll probably catch this in the theaters.
Oh God, please don't let any producers read this thread. Actually, I take that back, these could be fun movies!
Don't forget the street wise sidekick who speaks in the popular venacular. He could say things like "Wordsworth to yo' mother".
I never saw Swept Away, seeing as how it had Madonna in it. I'm guessing I was right on this one from your comments eh?
"Baudelaire: The Flowers of Evil" – A french poet fights crime while writing poetry at the same time.
I agree about Eccleston and Tennant. Both made fantastic Doctor Who's, and Eccelston has impressed me in some other roles he's had as well.
I did like Everett a lot though.
But if I had to pick an actor to play Holmes, it would be Jason Isaacs (aka Lucius Malfoy). I think he'd be perfect. He's got that touch of evil about him.
I'd call that one "Poetic Justice".
I could see Eccleston doing the role well, not Tenant though… I don't see Holmes in Downey at all though… Of course, he could prove me wrong…
Of course, there is Brett and then Rathbone (WAY back behind him.) and then "everyone else".
If there was one guy that i'd like to see try it (doubt he could pick up the British accent though), would be Jeffrey Donovan.
I'm not sure I'l be looking forward to this adaptation..
For the streetwise sidekick I was thinking more "traditional" and picturing a young Charley Dickens, all snot nosed and short pants, with perhaps an everpresent smudge of coaldust somewhere on his face. He could say "Cor!" "Oi!" and "Blimey!" a lot, and have the inevitable "Awww…" moment when he kicks an imaginary pebble when Coleridge and Wordsworth don't let him come along to fight the big bad mastermind at the end. Of course he shows up and saves the day somehow or another.
The soundtrack of course would have to be all Iron Maiden.
I smell an Oscar…
I've heard several people say that. Personally, I didn't even know it was a graphic novel before I saw it. It definitely had serious potential, they just squandered it with poor filmmaking techniques.
I didn't know they took out a villian? But that suddenly makes sense why they would end up in China.
You are certainly on Oscar's doorstep. . . restraining order notwithstanding.
I like the idea of Dickens. "Good work Holmes. It was the best of as$kickings, it was the worst of as$kickings."
Do it all arthouse-y and in French, definitely a contender.
I didn't know it was a graphic novel until I saw it either.
The pacing was the big issue for me, there was many a time I wanted to scream,"Would you just get on with it!" at the screen. There were some really clever bits to it, and good ideas, but the execution was just terrible in my opinion.
In the graphic novel they never go to China. Most of the action takes place in London with the League used as pawns by Moriarity to steal some cavorite (the anti-gravity element from H.G. Wells' "The First Men in the Moon") from Fu Manchu in order to power a flying dreadnaught that he's created. Mina is not a vampire, just a normal woman who has faced one of the greatest evils in the world and survived. She is also the group's leader. Quartermain is a flawed hero trying to kick an opium habit. There were a fair number of other changes as well. It's basically one of those adaptations where they keep the character names and throw out pretty much everything else.
This has NOTHING to do with Sherlock Holmes. Hollywood wrecks another one. Maybe Holmes will be transported to the next Star Trek sequel. Yeah, that's the ticket. I think I can sell that. Let's do lunch
I miss Jeremy Brett. Next up Oliver Twist fights Alien.
Why does Hollywood do this?
They always take something cool and make it lame.
I am not going to see this movie… I want my image
of Sherlock and Watson to remain pure to what Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle intended them to be.
Who knew Sherlock Holmes was Neo, Captain America and James Bond all rolled into one?
Rachel McAdams isn't exactly my idea of Irene Adler.
"the great mouse detective" will probably rank as a more faithful adaptation.
despite all his personal problems, i understand why downey keeps working. guy richie is a mystery to me.
Yes I have seen the preview but had no idea it was a Mike Judge production though i did not get the vibe it was to be comedy at the expense of liberals, I am glad he has some work out there with King of the Hill going off air I just watched it for the first time months ago and am hooked talk about good family viewing though it is animation it is excellent family value entertainment without preaching. I plan on watching The GOode Family for sure.
Basil Rathbone will always be Sherlock Holmes to me.
I do like Robert Downey Jr., I think he's an excellent actor. But I'm always afraid when Hollywood remakes things.
Haven't been to the movies in years and I don't think this will draw me to the theater.
I'll wait to see it when it hits cable. But if the reviews are bad I won't bother, I'll just open up my Sherlock Holmes DVD set .
Now if only it would have a sound track with Abney Park & Dr. Steel…
Oh, dear. Oh, DEAR. This isn't at all what I expected, or hoped for. If I'm not getting the wrong impression from the trailer, it has more of a vibe of "Young Sherlock Holmes" — which I loathed with every fiber of my being — than Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. What a disappointment.
had not even thought of Isaacs. Besides playing my favorite evil guy on HP movies, he made a lasting impression as the evil Brit on _The Patriot_. Now I can see him playing Holmes, too. It'd be nice to see him playing a non-evil character (though he does evil very, very well).
My faves are still Tennant & Eccleston, though.
I had a hard time seeing Everett as Holmes, though I'm probably too hard on him. Maybe I just wasn't ready to see someone other than Jeremy Brett in that role. Maybe Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal will make Everett's look better.
Will they show Homes taking a hit of his "seven percent solution"? It would be a more accurate portrayal than seeing him banging Victorian babes, or Edwardian babes since most Holmes' stories were published after 1900.
That trailer looked like that awful version of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen that came out a few years back.
Sherlock Holmes on the phone with Watson about 10 years from now….
"Ah, but what is the largest clue that was left behind by the Obama Administration that shows the failure of the US?"
….
"Please deposit $450 for the next 2 minutes."
What's next? Tug on Superman's cape? Spit into the wind? Pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger?
I love me some RDJ and I personally can't wait to see it.
Also, RDJ in handcuffs, 'nuff said.
OK, this is a joke, right? Jude Law as Dr Watson? Good grief!!
Literary? No. Entertaining? Could be. It's got Robert Downey and I've always enjoyed watching him.
Robert Downey Jr without a shirt! I'm there.
