Congratulations to the government for creating another "illegal" black market. Prohibition, the war on drugs, now the war on cigarettes. The government creates a market for a criminal activity, is "Shocked! Shocked!" when one appears, then, of course, the only solution is massive government spending to wage a war on the government-created criminal market.

Wait for more of Barry's "not a tax raise" things to take hold. I'm a P.O.'ed smoker, gas is going up again as well as other energy prices and those tied to them... And if EPA does an end run around Congress to regulate that dangerous toxin CO2... The majority is getting irritated enough by the taxes they pay for governmental policy, official taxes and otherwise, to be willing to consider changes to a tax they might not owe anything for but still live in fear over the documenting of such.

Since the minority includes a rather large share of campaign contribution suppliers for Democrats, there's a sizable chunk of the willing in that minority. While writing that reply, I was thinking of the unspoken duty our country was founded on to remove oppressive governments, anything less is consent to being oppressed. While drastic, it is our final check on government.

And speaking of checks, since that minority does have money, to enact change we simply need the will to not contribute to any candidate who won't give us the change we want. The government as a structure built from documents cannot withstand legislatures and a President aligned for a common goal, even the Supreme Court must give way to the ability to Amend.

"Just think if meaningful reforms were in place Tom Daschle could have been spared a national embarrassment and would be our Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services."

Yeah. One good benefit out of not having 'meaningful reforms' in place. Great article, Bob. And telling -- raising taxes has nothing but deleterious effects on all of society, across the board. It hurts the business men, large and small, it hurts the home owner, it hurts the poor. If the gov't wants higher revenues for them to play with, they should lift a page from Reagan's book and LOWER taxes across the board. Reagan lowered taxes and nearly doubled revenues, by boosting the economy -- the natural way to stimulate the workforce of a nation. Democrats who doubt this should read what their hero John F. Kennedy had to say about taxes. Lowering taxes stimulates economic growth. What part of that is so hard for the Obama administration to understand?

A Fair Tax won't come from the government for the same reasons I stated earlier.

As for coming from the people, the problem is that a minority percentage of the population shoulders the tax burden. The majority of the population has no desire to change that. This clearly demonstrates the inherent flaw in a progressive tax structure: it allows the majority to tax the minority as much as it wants and the minority is powerless to stop it.

Eplaining the logic to you, Halli, would be like trying to teach a pig to sing. We wouldn't get anywhere, and you'd just go back to rolling in the sh-t.
