NY Times: ‘Urban Modern’ is the New ‘Liberal’
by Billy HallowellPerhaps nothing is more entertaining or educational than listening to an editor or journalist answer questions related to ideological perspective. From Dan Rather to Barbara Walters, the denial of agenda-driven coverage is rampant. While the playing field is beginning to level in the realms of news and politics, entertainment outlets virtually ignore conservative viewpoints.
Last week, Gerald Marzorati, editor of The New York Times Magazine (a lifestyle magazine insert published by none other than the infamously left-leaning New York Times Co.) publicly answered a wide array of questions about the economy’s affect on the magazine, “the future of long-form journalism,” the magazine’s music coverage and ideological perspective, among other related subjects.
While the Q&A was nothing spectacular, a question about ideological perspective stands out from the rest. A reader identified as “Ron Mwangaguhunga” wrote:
“The New York Times Magazine, I’ve been told by a former editor, considers itself “centrist” — playing stories straight down the center. Any comment?”
Before I go any further, let it be stated that there is nothing centrist about The New York Times, so to expect that one of its Sunday supplements would be produced in journalism’s traditional middle-of-the-road sentiment is practically nonsensical. But, I digress.
While I do need to give props to Marzorati for publicly addressing the question, rather than tucking it away and ignoring its tenants, it’s important to pay attention to his response:
“Interesting. What you’re asking is: Does the Magazine have an ideology? At the risk of giving some of my colleagues hives, I think it does.”
Upon first reading this, I was jubilant! Finally, someone at The New York Times Co. admits that there is some form of inherent bias present in its reporting. But, my joy was quickly impeded by the Times’ own irrationality as I read on. Marzorati continued,
“Call it Urban Modern. That is, I think it reflects not a left-or-right POLITICAL ideology but a geographical one, the mentality of the place it is created: 21st Century Manhattan.”
Wait, what? Can anyone identify what “Urban Modern” means? I’m pretty sure most rational Americans would associate this ideological umbrella term with “liberalism.” Furthermore, if there wasn’t some sort of socio-political attachment inherently present in the term itself, why would Marzorati risk giving his colleagues “hives”? Ask anyone living in 21st Century Manhattan (or anyone with a base idea of what it’s like to be a conservative living in the greater-New York area) and they’ll tell you that the social and political spheres (i.e. “the basic mentality”) are dominated by liberalism.
While Marzorati’s willingness to share perspective with America is surely delightful, his inability to recognize his outlets overt ideological vice and his refusal to acknowledge disparity in the outlet’s overall coverage is less than appealing. This is reflective of the fact that those journalists, whether they cover entertainment or politics, living in the New York area don’t even recognize the political and social slant under and through which they live – and subsequently write.
If The Times Magazine wants to cover lifestyle through a liberal lens, that’s fine. But, the editor should at least understand and properly convey the magazine’s bias. It’s time for entertainment and lifestyle outlets to acknowledge their slant. Whether they choose to include the nation’s majority political perspective (conservatism) in editorial discussions is up to them. Either way, admitting that they have a problem is the first step toward recovery.

I really grow weary of this ceaseless denial of the truth, although I suppose everyone sees themselves differenly than others see them. Some Democrats see Che Guevera as the far left and John MCCain as the right and themselves as Urban Modern "centrists"
Urban Modern? That sounds like a clothing line. I prefer Urban Meathead.
I think it's kind of funny to see progressives scared to identify themselves as progressives. It used to be that way for conservatives…NOT ANY MORE!!!
I though Urban Modern was an architectural style?
Windows only on the left side, bad ventilation keeping old, useless ideas in, and blinds on anything real…
Yep.

"Urban Modern" is the new socialist/fascist/communist lite, also know as the modern day Democrats.
Speaking of roads, clearly all of America's economic roads are leading straight to Grove Parc Plaza, Chicago, Illinois.

No doubt 21st Century Manhattan will follow this bloody road to the deteriorated and dilapidated end.
HAIL HOPE, in the end it is all that will remain.
Good point Jed, anyone right of John McCain is a right-wing, racist, terroristic nut-job.
The reason Progressives don't like to identified as Progressives is because Progressive is code for Socialist, Communist or Anarchist. Come out come out wherever you are . We The People…..See You.
The Old Gray Lady ain’t what she used to be… she will be missed, …not!
with no electric, indoor plumbing or garages.
Urban Modern = Metrosexual Gangersters.
Hilary Clinton had no issue during one of the debates identifying with progressives and in the same sentence called out Saul Alinsky name. Oh Oh!
I believe the correct term is "Über Modern" if the New Reich Times is to be understood correctly.
You're back Dan!
You called?
They're jamming your computers, I tell you. The ones here at my apartment complex were automatically closing out whenever I got on BH. By the fourth or fifth time, I was starting to think they were monitoring my activity. Fight the machine!
I dunno – it just sounds like more of the same from a New Yorker. Urban Modern = NOT fly-over country, the only world that exists is New York, New York. If I had a magic wand, Id make it so New York REALLY would have nothing to do with the rest of the country…see how long before they are begging to be connected to America again.
I resemble that remark
Take heart, in times of darkness. Because this is a good sign: the constant need to rebrand 'liberalism' speaks to its vapidity.
It reminds me of my first apartment. It was a horrible basement apartment (the ones with letters instead of numbers) that had frequent roach infestations. Eventually I moved on up to the East Side and while walking through the city I went past my old building. Hey, new management! So I looked up the management group and found out that it was just the old group with a different name. They had received so many complaints that they decided to rebrand to wipe the slate clean.
That's how I see liberalism: a roach-infested slum of idiotic concepts so resoundingly proven false that they have to keep changing their name and hiding.
Turban Modern is what it's going to be with this Ramadan-ass-kiiser in the White House.
Turban Modern is what it's going to be with this Ramadan-ass-kisser in the White House.
Most Liberals are so out of touch they don't even recognize what they believe as Liberal. To their thinking they are no more Liberal than the air they breath.
No matter what it's called, when the onion is peeled, it reveals NO CREDIBILITY.
or you could use firefox, and just set it up for private browsing all the time, and if you want more security, use hide ip platinum, or set up a tor connection.
I f*cking hate Manhattan. Smells like dead rats and sh*t, and it's full of people who think they're special because they live at the "center of it all."
Why on earth would you need a garage? You can fit the Smart Car in a corner of the living room.
it always pays to be in good with the i.t. guys.
look into something called portable apps. runs off a thumb drive,

"URBAN MORON." Now that's a perfect fit.
"URBAN MODERN"???
Cloyingly arrogant, with a clear leavening of chicken$h!t. Obviously, the NY Slimes will never admit its bias.
Let them go extinct. The do-do's are lonely.
Leftism isn't an ideology, it's superstition. Ideology implies idea-logic. Neither ideas nor logic exist in leftism. It's nothing but pie-in-the-sky
wishfulmagical thinking. "If we believe "x" then our desired "y" will come to pass." Practitioners of voodoo and santaria are equally sophisticated.Just another "ism" associated with Germany
modern urban-expressionism
a style of art founded in 1997 that is rooted in the old 1900 expressionism movement in germany and influenced by movements in New York City such as abstract expressionism and graffiti art. This style of art is known to be a rebellious response to the rising political and social changes in the world.

No Bias here folks at New York Times.
Just move on.
Compared to some of the other sections of the paper, the Sunday Times Magazine probably is a little more centerist — that's not to say they're in the center, but just that they're a little less loopy and not as doctrinaire hard left than say the op-ed, Artis & Leisure or the daily book review staffs tend to be.
Which is probably why Marzorati tried to coin a new term for those who realize using the word "progressive" isn't fooling anyone. It's still an effort to try to avoid admission that ideology dictates story assignments, editing and placement within the paper, but at least the mag's higher-ups seem to know that the readers know the score and are trying to avoid the issue by coining new buzz words. It's kind of like the first step in a seven-step recovery plan, admitting you have a problem — the other departments, especially editorial, are still in blissful denial that their positions and contemptuous attitude towards their critics are killing the company's bottom line, beliving if they just double down on their beliefs and attack their opponents are stupid and/or evil, eventually the rest of the public will bend to their will.
I tried six computers at work, nothing. Come home, no problem. I guess the Government knows where I work, but not were I live, yet or maybe they are not tracking satellite Internet, yet.
I was just trying to point StlDan in a direction to give him some places to look. A thumb drive at my office will be detected within 1 sec and then you better be a fast runner because a .223 round is coming at you
Thats why I prefer to work remote. LOL
Try this next time. Even using other computers will still bring up your properties at work. I have to do this at least 4 times a day at this site. I believe it is an issue with the custom software they use at Big Hollywood not the Black Helicopters that follow me around.

I guess that makes me Rural Antiquated.
Yea if the Administrator at work would allow that it would be better.
Let's save some time:
Urban Modern = Communist
Liberal = Communist
Democrat = Communist
Independent = Communist
Libertarian = Communist
Green = Communist
Socialist = Communist
Progressive = Communist
Journalist = Communist
McCain = RINO = Pinko = Cranky Constipated Communist Person (CCCP)
Well, why wouldn't they continue to claim a non biased viewpoint? It appears to be working. Half the country and most of its readership believe it. It' s all part of "teh narrative" afterall. Those who get their information entirely from "urban modern" sources, are usually amused and often offended when you point out that they're being brainwashed by these very sources. They will claim, Hillary-wise, that a right wing bias actually exists in all media. Do the fish even notice that they're in water?
Right on, AllAmerican!
More likely your employer has filters on their internet connection. It's quite common. As a matter of fact, I used to work on the team that did that for IBM.
Years ago Playboy.com put out a story detailing the top sources for traffic on their web site. Right at the top of the list was IBM. Needless to say Lou Gerstner was not pleased.
In order to put an immediate end to it, we changed it's DNS entry in our servers so when some one typed in the URL http://www.playboy.com they got sent to a server in IBM with a bogus message saying their attempt to connect had been logged and their manager would be notified.
We never did any of that, but man, it scared the hell out of people. One co-worker of mine (different team) was working remotely from home, and her son tried to get to playboy.com and she saw that web page on her computer and called me nearly in tears. I explained what we we're doing, and we both had a good laugh. But I don't think her son was laughing.
More likely its a problem with the java code used at BH. It's a nice package they have, but there are bugs. Some times I have to close everything down and reboot entirely to clear it out.
I expect its a work in progress, and it will get better as time goes by.
As an I/T guy, yes, if you want top service, be polite, say thank you, and an occasional cup of coffee does wonder.
The best way to sum it up is an old Dilbert cartoon, Dogbert's tech support.
Dogbert: I have this PC card that will solve all your problems.
Customer: Yes, that's just what I need!
Dogbert: I'm just going to toss it over in the pile with the rest of them in the corner of my office. Bye.
We'll, they've already trashed the terms communism, socialism, liberalism, democratic and now progressive.
We should have a contest, what will they try after progressive is dead and urban modern is dying?
"Nice to old people and kittens?"
I'm not sure what 'name' it makes me. I'll just stick with my own. 'Standing on the opposite side, drawing a line in the sand, not on my watch!'
oooooooooooooooooooooooooo! You're gonna get in trouble!
we're the left/liberals/progressives/urban-moderns/whatever. we're here to magically transport you from metaphorical ideological roach-infested slums to the real thing!
Nice to old kittens sounds right. We already know what they think of old people.
For decades they've called themselves "liberals" while believing the exact opposite of true, classic liberalism.
So flat out lying is allowed by them.
Not anymore Brother because of guys like you and me and the rest of the crew on this site and others sites like it. The spotlights on them and they can't take the Proverbial heat.
nothin but props to i/t guys i work with.
it helps break down the barriers when your frankenputer at home blows most of theirs away. once they know you have some experience life is good. and they envy my hacked omnia phone too!
Lol!! Trust me- I worked in journalism for thirty years- it's as skewed politically as Hollywood- and as about as open to "diversity of thought."
Asa New York City conservative I think the reason this Times guy doesn't come right out and say the publication is left-wing is because "urban modern" is liberalism infused into every aspect of their lives. They simply have no self-awareness as to how their world-view colors everything from the way they dress to what they eat to where they vacation because it is so reflexive and mindless.
