(We’re Quickly Becoming) A Nation of Idiots
by Billy HallowellMichael Jackson died and the media cried. But don’t worry; they were tears of joy, not despair. After all, what better time to sacrifice journalistic integrity for the sake of high ratings and bloated ad revenues?
In the weeks following Jackson’s death, the level and scope of coverage was and continues to be mind-numbing. Sure, MJ’s death was tragic, but tragedy doesn’t warrant the widespread disengagement of American media outlets, nor does it permit the dumbing down of pertinent information. To borrow from John Ziegler, the obsessive coverage of Michael Jackson’s death is yet another glaring symptom of the malpractice that is all too common amongst today’s media elite.

It’s no surprise that CNN and others are jumping on the bandwagon. Jackson’s collapse and subsequent death fueled increased viewership and network interest. According to CNN co-founder Reese Schonfeld:
“Jackson’s death brought all sorts of new viewers to the cable news networks, and it’s obvious that most of them turned to CNN. CNN is still seen, by most people who are not news junkies, as the place to turn to for news they really care about.”
Schonfeld went on to say the following:
“It’s unfortunate that the news they seem to care about is the death of an entertainer, no matter how great, when there are things happening in the world that will affect them and their children much more significantly.”
So, Schonfeld is hypocritically rejoicing over increased ratings while his network abandons world events to cover the life of a man who has had and will continue to have little viable impact on society. He’s basically saying, “How tragic that people care about such irrelevant information, but hey – our ratings are through the roof!”
Railing against citizen love for the unimportant, while praising the effect such coverage has over CNN’s bankroll is nonsensical (from a journalistic perspective, at least). And this is only one example. CNN surely isn’t the only network at fault, as plenty of others have joined in and reneged on their responsibility to the American people.
In their classic spirit when dollar signs come into focus, the media abandon reporting the news that actually affects Americans in order to capitalize on the revenues they can expect from their self-perpetuated campaigns, with “All Michael Jackson, All the Time” being the most recent narcissistic example. Frankly, it’s embarrassing and fraudulent. The Fourth Estate has become the court gesture – and that’s being kind.
But, it’s not only the media who are at fault. U.S. citizens – led by members of my own generation – have continued to fuel the fire. Eric Holder was way off base when he called Americans a “nation of cowards.” What he should have called us was a nation of idiots (please note the sarcasm here, as I’d rather watch MSNBC than give Holder’s comment credence — and that’s saying something).
Many young Americans are so blind to the domestic and international issues that will surely impact their world, that they’d rather fawn over a pop legend they never knew, than confront the important issues that directly impact their lives. Why expend the energy needed to understand the difference between a deficit and the national debt when you can watch the mainstream media slobber over the advertising revenues they receive from exploiting the death of a former super star? It’s shameful.
CNN and other related outlets should have the nerve to report real news, as should the American people crave the information that will lead to greater transparency and personal betterment. Here are some events we missed out on during the MJ hooplah:
- Vice-president Joe “Gaffetastic” Biden said, “”We misread how bad the economy was,” a statement that should have sent the globe spinning. Instead, it quickly faded as the media contemplated which doctor should be blamed for MJ’s death.
- Calls for a second stimulus began to surface (although anyone who was paying attention to Obama’s budget would have noticed billions budgeted for another potential “stimulus” back in April).
- After the unprecedented connection that was established between Americans and Iranians, the media essentially abandoned the Iranian election story as Iranians continued to fight and protest in the streets of Tehran.
- The media showed wreathes and memorials set for MJ, while American soldiers sacrificing their lives overseas went unnoticed. After all, how would the American people know of their sacrifices without a media body committed to relaying such pertinent information? Lt. Brian Bradshaw died the same day as MJ and his aunt had this to say in response to the media’s outlandish coverage: “Mr. Jackson received days of wall-to-wall coverage in the media. Where was the coverage of my nephew or the other soldiers who died that week?” Good question.
Beyond my complaining, it is important to note that the media have a responsibility to serve as a check on our government. Each outlet is intended to add value and context to the democratic process. Whether it be inherent political bias or the abandoning of real news for elevated ratings, the media are continuously abandoning the American people. The only question that remains: Is there any turning back?

I do find it intensely shameful that fallen troops went unnoticed in the wake of the death of a washed-up ex-superstar.
P.S. "jester" not "gesture." Damn spellchecker.
When I was a kid, there was news all around me. We brought papers to school and in Social Studies we went trhough current events. Classes were taught with passion and enthusiasm. Teachers are not like that now. They are civil servants who appreciate the end of each day, who instead of teaching history and geography talk about global warming.
News has always been what someone decided was important. What we knew about the Vietnam War was often not accurate. i think what we have now is the logical result of schools numbing down the news.
Blithering idiots! This is all part of the coming liberal Utopia, they must dumb down the citizenry, congratulations, it’s been a staggering success.
Liberals love capitalism when it comes to lining their own pockets. I do think, the great percentage of people have been disengaged from important issues for a long time. I wonder what percentage of the population's eligible voters took part in the election process in 1850 or 1900? I do think it seems like it is worse today, probably because we have more recently had the advent of 24 hour news programs who cannot sustain themselves without sensational content. The people who read the articles at this site tend to be political junkies and much more interested in serious issues than the population at large, so it may seem worse to us. We cannot also overlook manipulation of news to fit the media's preordained political template. Thus, distract from bad news for liberals and prolong scandals for conservatives.

When the media stops being a check for the government and starts taking checks from the government we have a serious problem. I'm sick of being spoon fed stupidity every time I turn the TV on. I don't care what nightclub the latest little rich tramp is staggering out of or who or what she's dragging home. I want the weather, and I want to know what's going on in the world, and I want it delivered to me in such a way that I can make my own decision on what's good and bad.
"After all, what better time to sacrifice journalistic integrity for the sake of high ratings and bloated ad revenues?"
you say that as if they had any journalistic integrity left to lose…
Dumbing down of the news? Surely you jest. There IS no "news" any more-it's all just newsertainment. I gave up local news years ago, national television news a couple years ago and concentrate on using news aggregators to help my sift through the overwhelming volume available through the interwebs. Thank goodness I discovered RSS manyyears ago. As for CNN-it's really not even worth mentioning in the same context as news-it has always been just shameful-remember OJ Simpson. CNN: All OJ, all the time…
The curiosity of the average reporter does not extend past what press releases cross his desk that day.
There are no good answers unless there are good questions. To see the gullibility of someone paid to spread the 'news' is truly astounding. How anyone can expect the public to be informed when the news people lead the way in idiocy?
Who, What, When, Where, How . Then STOP. I don't want 'Feel', 'Opinion', or 'Speculation'.
"Could, may, might and possible" should not be part of a NEWS story.
Michael Jackson died? Big deal. What did Congress do TO us today?
"Beyond my complaining, it is important to note that the media have a responsibility to serve as a check on our government"
Don't hold your breath waitng for that
"while American soldiers sacrificing their lives overseas went unnoticed."
It didn't used to be that way about a year ago. All you heard about was the dead soldiers with mug shots even. Of course they weren't people giving up their lives for American freedom. They were political ping-pong ball body bags used to harass George W. Bush for fighting a war the MSM didn't like. Now we don't hear about anything going on in Iraq, but the dead number of soldiers has increased in Afghanistan (why is that?) by double. It gets mentioned every now and then as a side note.
Is it any wonder that it was the National Enquirer that broke the John Edwards affair???
Are we a nation of idiots?
Yes, and no.
Yes, with respect that we as a nation have more interest in entertainment, sports, total lack of interest in things of dire importance–Obamacare, stimulus bill, Iran protests–the list is endless.
No, with respect that so many of the world events seem overwhelming and beyond control, and most people throw up their hands and turn their attention to things seemingly less threatening, pleasure over patriotism, if you will.
At some point these very people will either involve themselves voluntarily to reverse this slide toward socialism the dem's are determined to force on us, or they will be swept into the morass and wonder how they got there, if they ever become aware enough to see what has happened to them.
"Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. Their children, brought up easy, let it slip away again, poor fools. And their grandchildren are once more slaves." ~~D.H. Lawrence, Classical American Literature, 1922
CNN prefers its viewers to be misinformed. It's a perfect match.
The trouble with Who, What, When, Where, and How is the twisted way the MSM answers those questions.
Who can we tear down or build up with this story?
What do they know and When did they know it? (A MSM classic)
Where do they fall in the political spectrum?
How can we milk this for every penny we can get?
Oddly, though, all of the people I hang out with are cracking Michael Jackson jokes, not lining up to buy tickets to his memorial service. I don't know anyone who was emotionally invested in "MJ" to any degree.
Maybe I hang out with really mean-spirited, cruel people without any remaining vestiges of human feeling, but at least we're not idiots…
This topic has been done to death. This Jackson hype is much like a car accident. You know you shouldn't slow down and look but something makes you do it anyway.
So, another drug addicted "star" dies by his own hand or incompetence. How can that be NEW?
Oh well, another day in La La land.
“It’s unfortunate that the news they seem to care about is the death of an entertainer, no matter how great, when there are things happening in the world that will affect them and their children much more significantly.”
Hmm, a lie. No surprise there, Reese Schonfeld. It doesn't matter if we have 12 news channels to watch or only 3 (the good old days) if you and your cohorts all decide (FOX included) to do "The Living Dead is finally dead" wall-to-wall coverage while real news was happening all around the world (Nero would be proud).
In other words: there was nothing else on! You all did the Jackson hustle and we had no choice but to go to the web (which was only a bit better) or, I hate to admit it, the newspapers.
And the reason? Not that Jackson's death was all that interesting. It's that it was easy to cover. It's rarely spoken of, but as a profession, broadcast journalism is one of the laziest.
Wrong the artist is a precursor to the political culture
& actually informs us. Would U bury Chopin badly ?
I think the idiots are the ones crying over MJ's death. The intelligent ones are making jokes about MJ. Just my opinion.
The clearest view I got into the media was in college, where I took a photojournalism class as an art requirement. The prof gave us the definition of "news", warning us first that we wouldn't like it, but it was the truth: News is whatever the editor thinks will sell newspapers.
The method of spreading the news may have changed, but the definition of news hasn't
Notice that the daily troop death counts have stopped since Obama became President.

And it was Drudge that broke the Lewinski affair. Fox news is consistently a day or two (or more) ahead of other news outlets in airing stories.
Maybe NBC, CBS, ABC, et al will just get out of the news biz altogether and concentrate full-time on broadcasting DNC propaganda.

These days, those that really have their priorities in the correct order are just going to feel like misfits. There are so many dummies out there and our educational systems are faiing them and the media outlets are failing them. No- make that failing US, since the country is suffering as a result of those failures.
Forgive me, but I thought they already had?
Yeah, Fox was guilty too. I worry that they're starting to drink the Kool-Aid lately. I had to read about what and who was behind the Black Panthers' dismissal on WaPo. Fox didn't do any digging.
Seems like all broadcasters do is collect, digest and spin what the other outlets are actually digging up.
It would be more accurate to say that our MSM caters to the idiots in our midst. A growing number of people forgo the MSM both in print and TV, and get their news from sites like Drudge and BH (and, unfortunately, HuffPo and Daily Koz).
Stupid people draw press coverage like fresh poop draws flies. This dosn't mean that they represent anything like the majority of people, who, I pray, retain the sense they were born with.

There is no turning back. The only path is forward. And that's the path of the new alternative media, the internet.
Every one reading and posting here is part of that movement. Together, we are becoming the new media.
Count me in as a proud member of this movement! Power to We The People.
What do you mean by "QUICKLY BECOMING A NATION OF IDIOTS"? No way – it is a world wide secret America IS a nation idiots. Just thought I would clue you in, in case you didn't notice yet. And your comment proves your point anyhow. Congrats for the stupidest nation in the world.
That quote is incredible.
I learned about the Beatles break-up in the Weekly Reader.
Agree.
(and I like your photo, JamesArmstrong.)
There was a MEDIUM called Journalism when I was younger and watched the evening news with my parents…. today it is all about RATINGS and to see who uncovers the story first… Now to think that people are actually calling TMZ a news source? are you for real???
I just can say that your the idiot….and your AMONGST the nation of idiots…… I could care less what people think of me…. my president is the MESSIAH…….I know I am in good hands!!!

no, we are not a nation of idiots…
At least not yet; the cultural revolution happening RIGHT NOW, whilst ignored by the State Controlled Media is very real and widespread. However, idiocy is spreading, being fostered by the likes of Gates and other so-called 'educators'- propagandists is more like it- and they are feeding the soft skulls full of mush their hideous playbook/ And, like good little Eloi they drink deeply of the Kool-aid.
We are motivated however, and can still win this thing back. Watch the vitriol aimed at our 'elected representatives' as they return home for August recess and face the electorate…
THAT should be funny as heck…

I got rid of my satellite TV about a year before the last election and have never looked back. If I want to know something, I get on the net. The only thing I miss (seriously) is Family Guy and football watching from the comfort of my couch.

Michael Jackson is dead? Next yer gonna tell me John Lennon is dead…. My first question is "How can you tell?"
Thanks ThinkRight! I was turning blue! It was really sad watching Dan Blather ask the government to save a "free" press. His skill of objective journalism blinds him of the fact that the government helping the press automatically makes it not "free". Of course, if they were objective they would not have witnessed historic declines in readership and hence, ad dollars. No wonder they hate capitalism, they don't understand it.
And where are all of the demands for an exit strategy and leave date?
Boy, you aren't kidding. I feel like a misfit every time I try to have a political conversation with pretty much anyone (I live in California). I literally don't fit in anywhere.
The media does nothing but cater to the lowest common denominator and the public has been trained to like it that way. It wouldn't take much to raise the standards of what the media puts out there, but why bother? Celebrity & reality show gossip sells and it's cheap. As long as the public laps it up, that's what they're going to produce. Sadly, there are only so many of us willing to turn off the tv rather than be spoon fed the pap they give us. I would say that things won't change until audiences change, but given the sheer volume of anti-American films that are still produced regardless of profitability, we need to do more than simply not watch. We have to complain. Loudly. I'm just not sure how to go about doing that.
Just finished reading "the Dumbest Generation" by Mark Bauerlein. The Michael Jackson idiocy is nothing new. This generation is cocooned in their iPods, Facebook and Twitter and cares nothing for what's going on outside their insular world of games, celebrities and gossip. Pathetic. Watching Jay Leno's bit "Jaywalking" and asking a teen "Where does the Pope live?" and getting "England" with a followup "Where in England?", and hearing "Uh…Paris?" makes you despair.
It still says "gesture"; should say "jester". Is anyone editing these? Anyway…Michael's not getting any deader, and Iran's still around. Could the media please start covering those Iranian voters again? Please?
Is it possible Iran had Michael Jackson killed in order to distract the media while they rounded up their dissidents? Just asking. (As conspiracy theories go….not a bad one!)
Re: "(We’re Quickly Becoming) A Nation of Idiots"
And this is well-proven by FOX News being the highest-rated cable news network.
Go watch the movie "Idiocracy", and then be afraid, be very afraid.
Our media was just jealous and we needed our own princess diana to mourn and covet for the next decade or two. MJ conveniently filled this tragic role and now we will get to hear about it for 19 1/2 more years..
I've been on the paleolithic diet for decades; meat, fruit, vegetables and nuts with very little if any MSM.
Oddly enough, I was on TMZ's site, (I say oddly enough as I rarely look at it), the day they first broke the MJ story. Yes, I found it interesting watching it all play out. This lasted about 2 hrs. Then, I was totally done. I haven't read any stories, watched any broadcasts, etc, in regards to the story. Why? I had my complete gossipy, train-wrecked fill of it in the first 2 hours. After the first nite, so should the rest of the world. Now it is just unbelievably weird and sick.
the last election proved, once again as I have maintained since jimmy carter, that –
the mass majority of Americans should not be allowed to vote
the vote should be for taxpayers only, and based on a vote for each dollar paid in taxes – let the Americans that pay the bill dictate the laws and how their money is spent
stop the welfare set, our part of the nation of idiots, from dictating law and policy thru idiots like obama, biden, kenndy, pelosi, reid
there is no doubt in my mind that if the taxpayers were electing DC, the liberals would be in the permanent minority and in very small numbers as to not be able to screw America like they are now
It's entirely possible that the populace as a whole has given up on having any input or impact on politics. It is very apparent that the people we "elected to serve us" think they are "in power" instead. And it does not seem to matter who we put in, Republican, Democrat, Mickey Mouse…they all serve the special interests that pay for their campaigns and promise their families high paying jobs for doing nothing. Maybe the populace is smarter than you think. Joe Public may be saying, "Just pass the alcohol and entertain me, because there is nothing I can do about anything, anyhow." I don't know that he is wrong.
Stated like a true Conservative. So what you're saying is that you're against the Constitution of the United States?
You want an oligarchy, a small group of wealthy and influential people in control of the government.
Why do Right-Wingers not realize, even as they condemn and decry Communist, Socialist and Islamic totalitarianism, that they want the same thing here in America, just with themselves in charge?
Oh, the unintended irony!
Liberals love capitalism when it comes to lining their own pockets. I do think the great percentage of people have been disengaged from important issues for a long time. I wonder what percentage of the population's eligible voters took part in the election process in 1850 or 1900? We cannot also overlook manipulation of news to fit the media's preordained political template. Thus, distract from bad news for liberals and prolong scandals for conservatives are the orders of the day.
While I am in favor of restricting the vote, giving a vote per dollar taxed is a seriously flawed concept. I'd rather restrict voting to people who can pass a test about basic math, logic, and reading comprehension. Comprehension being the key. Nothing about such a test can be directly about politics though.
I have watched this movie a few times and every time I see it I cringe. As a teacher, seeing more and more unmotivated and downright lazy students, not to mention the number of pregnant girls in my school, I begin to wonder if this movie is truly fiction.

Yeah, I've been waiting for Code Pink to start protesting the "illegal" and "inhuman" war in Afghanistan. Three guesses why they wont.
Thank you.
liberal talking points – only small group of wealthy and influential pay taxes?
original constitution dictated that taxpayers were the voters – had to own property and pay taxes to vote
then liberals got the constitution amended to include their voters – the welfare queens

Agreed. My idea is a good idea, therefore they would not accept it. And certainly, the race card would be played. It is only the liberals and so called black leaders that believe black people cannot compete intellectually. I never said my idea would be popular
I like No Taxes, No Vote myself. Just not more votes for more taxes. We are already controlled by money interests as it is, and that is killing our Democracy. Money needs to be removed altogether from politics.
This is a legitimate question. I am not trying to incite anyone, just curious for an answer. Allow me to preface this with the fact that I subscribe to no political party or conservative/liberal label. I am a philosopher with an interest in politics who recognizes strengths and flaws in all lines of thought.
Those who would identify themselves as conservatives (this article being an example) attack the MSM for fixating on MJ's death over world news and actual important issues since it is nothing but a money grab. I agree 100% with this. At the very same time they defend the idea of capitalism i.e. maxmizing profit in the private business sector. MSM are all privately run corporations operating under the pretense of capitalism. Why would they NOT do what is best for their company in terms of revenue? Isn't that what capitalism is all about? If a company is not making the news the way the people want it, they will theoretically lose money. If this is making them money, then it is what the people want. This is about the purest example of capitalism I can surmise. So to the self-labeled conservatives who contradict themselves in this fashion, what would you say?
