Captain America Returns: Will He Remain MIA Against Jihad?
by Bosch FawstinCaptain America was born to fight America’s real world enemies. He was first seen punching out Hitler on the cover of Captain America Comics #1, a year before the attacks on Pearl Harbor. But nearly 8 years after the attacks of 9/11, Cap is yet to be unleashed on Jihad. Not long after 9/11, likely feeling they had no choice, Marvel Comics made a half-assed attempt to pit Cap against what seemed to be an al Qaeda type group, but it was forgettable, with the terrorist leader having his ‘reasons’ and with Cap apologizing for us. It’s a sign of the times that there was not a Captain America movie on the fast track in Hollywood right after 9/11.
I’m told that it would be considered ‘controversial’ for such a pop icon to take on today’s jihadists, but the controversy to me is that the most patriotic superhero of all time is still MIA against Jihad. For a time after 9/11, I was naive enough to believe I could write and draw a Captain America story where the jihadist’s get what’s coming to them, with no apology and with full fury. I stopped cold when I realized there’d be no chance in hell of Marvel Comics allowing Cap to say and do what had to be said and done against this enemy. I wised up and created the perfect enemy against Jihad. For more on that, please visit my blog.

See what happens when you start sawing the heads off people who disagree with you?
All the wimps of the world no longer vocally disagree with you.
Saddest part is, we've elected one of the wimps to run our country.
Long Live Pigman!
Great minds think alike, Bosch. Unfortunately, as you know, political correctness has permeated all facets of the entertainment industry.
Ultimate Captain America fought in the Mid East. Pre-emptive strike against an unnamed rogue state to remove it's nukes. A coalition of agents from the unnamed country, North Korea, Russia, China, Syria and France strike back, capturing the White House and toppling the statue of Liberty. Though the US is saved in the end by the political/social/animal activist Norse God of Thunder, Thor.
That probably should have been mentioned in the article.
Man…that is some great work, especially the bottom piece and let's not forget about the message,
Go Bosch!!!
Good stuff, Bosch. I just subcribed to your blog.
Are you familiar with your fellow Big Hollwyoodian Michael Mandaville's website?

This is exactly the kind of action it encourages us all to take. An interview with Michael can be found here:

Captain America was subverted to an apologetic, hand-wringing milquetoast in the 1970s. There have been flashes of his former self at times, but his keepers at Marvel since Cap "lost his way" have done their utmost to use the character to undermine, and even attack, traditional American institutions and ideals.
The only way Cap will ever again attack contemporary "alleged" enemies of the U.S. is if, at the end of the story, the "real villain" turns out to be an, ahem, "rogue" element of the CIA; an, ahem, "rogue" element of the U.S. military; or, ahem, some "rogue" multinational corporation or defense contractor.
After all, as almost all popular culture writers seem to believe, America is always at fault when it comes to foreign policy problems. We are almost always portrayed as creating our own problems out of corporate greed, hubris, or just plain stupidity. In short, as the depictions go, Cap really has no enemies abroad to fight because, well, all the problems start right here in our own backyard.
Or the whole "Truth" miniseries, where Marvel apparently decided that what Cap's origin really needed was the taint of racism.
Or the story (ignored now, I think) where Captain America's suspended animation was really an evil government plot to keep him from stopping the use the A-bomb. I kid you not.
Oh yes, let's not forget that Captain America was killed during a Republican's time in office, and then resurrected within 6 months of a Democrat winning.
It's really sad to see how Marvel has misused this character.
Captain America is sadly a relic of another era, of unapologetic US rugged individulalism aginst evil oppressors worldwide.
We are now in the apologizing for being rugged individualists phase.
Sounds like the good Captain is either out of a job or is receiving 're-education'…
Well James Bond wouldn't fight the Soviets. And last season Jack Bauer fought a Blackwater clone. The people who control the comics now are liberal gen x'ers. Those who created Bond and comic book characters lived through WW2 and weren't afraid to put a name to evil.
Everyone knows that Islam means "peace." Why would Captain America want to attack peace?
Love the name. That's a great series of books.
Despite his frequent criticism of President Bush, Mark Millar's run on the Ultimates portray Captain America as a superhero who beat down Islamic bad guys without apology.
Otherwise, Marvel Comics had been VERY skittish of Captain America beating up the jihadists. Characters who are more obscure (e.g., Nighthawk) or foreign (e.g., Black Panther) are a different story.
Well, you know America represents the forces of imperialist aggression and Islam means peace. I'm surprised Marvel hasn't changed Cap's colors from red, white, and blue to just plain white for surrender.
"its" is already possessive, no need to add an apostrophe.
no, but 007 had the Red Chinese using SPECTRE to start WWIII between the US and the USSR… but Tiger Tanaka and his Ninjas stromed the volcano and saved the day for the Cold War.
So there's that…
Perhaps if you did a little more commenting on the failure of Marvel to keep Captain America fighting for America instead of turning him into an apologist and a 'truther', this article would be worth my time… but it's just a commercial for your site, and should be removed by BH. I admire your work with Pigman, but you shouldn't be allowed to present commentary to advertise for your work here.
Maybe Captain America will return to fight the Grammar Nazis.
Wouldn't that be just like America? Imperialist, Neo-Con, intolerant, racist, ecophobic, nucleaphile, clingers to guns and religion that we are.
"War is Peace" suddenly means something new to me.
Don't forget, the ChiComs also bankrolled Goldfinger.
And in the first Pierce Brosnan Bond flick (I forget the title), 007 and another one of Her Majesty's secret agent guys (Sean Bean) are sabotaging a Soviet chemical weapons facility during the pre-title sequence.
What's amazing (not spider-man) is that comic books continue to act, much like newspaper publishing, like the country is 100% liberal in politics, just like the editors/decision makers.
And, much like newspaper publishing, the audience shrinks every year.
What's wrong having a Guy Gardner or US Agent or one of a dozen "heroes" who could lean right, one way or the other?
Oh yeah, then there would be offensive character types, and we certainly couldn't have that!
I went by the new comics stand last week — all look the same, all read the same, and it's been that way for 10 years or more. Once upon a time, I bought 50 books a week. Now, armed with $5, I can't find one book to spend it on….. crazy.
Just wait till the next round of attacks on this country by the insane members of The Cult of Islam. It'll make 9/11 look like a schoolyard slap fight. And New York is one of the main targets…again. Maybe then the writers of Cap will take off their politically-correct kid gloves. BTW, I was in the military for 20 years, have a BA in Arabic (I was a clerk), and own every issue of Cap from 1975 on.
Nice Mill quote, Bosch.
Anything that, in one's opinion, is not worth dying for is not worth living for either.
Sorry, MovieBob — you're wrong. Cap fought in WW II, Korea, and, briefly, Vietnam. Stan Lee quickly pulled Cap out of Vietnam when it became apparent that many of Marvel's then burgeoning new audience — college students — were against the Vietnam War.
Lee, being the savvy editor that he was, made Cap's new enemy an old, politically safe enemy, the Nazis, through the re-emergence of the arch Nazi villain, the Red Skull. Lee also introduced other "safe" global threats such as the culturally ambiguous fascist organizations such as HYDRA and AIM. These gave Cap plenty of world-threatening grist to chew until Marvel's younger editors and creators took over. It was at this point — the early 1970s — where Cap's persona changed for the worse, and he became a politically-correct caricature of his old self.
Marvel's been "The House of (Ultra PC and Bad) Ideas" pretty much since Joe Quesada took over. Big reason I stopped reading their drek.
I just can't support a company that portrays our country as such an remorselessly evil nation.
Look no further than Captain America's origin retcons: US government murders 300 black men to test the Super Soldier serum, because, quote "C'mon! You don't think they'd have given it to a white guy without testing it first on someone deemed expendable!" and Cap's original purpose, as "Weapon 1", was to be the first in a series of super soldiers that would serve as anti-mutant deathsquads.
Yet some of my friends can't understand for the life of them why I call him Joe Al-Quesada…
Wow,
I just love how neo-CONS are so sorry that they now need fictitious heroes from comic books to fight their whimsical quixotic battles all over the globe, since the rest of the world are sick of their lustful need to shed blood.
[...] Captain America Returns: Will he Remain MIA Against Jihad? by Bosch Fawstin [...]
You were wrong about your reasons why you could never successfully write a Captain America story.
You think this is bad…Marvel has a second "main" universe, called the Ultimate Universe. And there, Captain America was frozen from the 1940's until 2003/2004…and his American values, in that line, are "quaint," and he's painted as a jingoistic jerk who can't adapt to the modern times.
The Internet did it. Once people could be offended and let people know they were offended at the speed of the light, it was game over.
Nah, we don't need fictitious heroes to fight al-Qaeda — the real ones are doing just fine.
It's just that certain people seem to be happy with racism, sexism and homophobia so long as the one who is like that is Arab or Persian. When it's Americans, you people become avenging angels, determined to stamp out racist-sexist-homophobia wherever it may stand.
I think it is abundantly clear whom you consider to be the real enemy.
We don't need to worry about pleasing people who consider the Constitution to be a worthless rag written by a bunch of white male slaveowners, the flag to be a symbol of oppression, and Osama bin Laden to be a freedom fighter. America is not North Korea or Iran.
Who cares about Captain America — he's a relic of the past. Leave fighting America's real enemies to Pigman.
That's kinda the point of places like Big Hollywood… to fight that trend and reverse it even.
Why was my last comment deleted the minute it was posted?
Captain America is alive and well–he wears an Army, Marine, Naval and Air force uniform.
He long ago left the comics and seeks no public glory.
He only lives to do his duty and serve his country.
Ok, you just touched on my most favorite of Bond Films! They actually used Ninjas before anyone knew anything about them.
Seriously?
It's hard for me to understand naive people like you "Joe". In the world we live in where the declared purpose of the Jihad is to kill all of us… you seem to just pretend it's all make believe. I could respect that view if they had not actually carried out attacks but now, no way.
Sane rational men and women are WILLING to fight when they need to but never WANT to go to war. War is horrible and nobody goes "whimsically" into that kind of horror and hell. Those who fight and make the hard choices to fight are just not cowards who try and convince themselves that the whole world is all sunshine and puppy dogs when it's not. Sometimes there is actual evil and it needs to be fought.
All this discussion is pointing out is that Captain America (the writers) used to have a clear concept of good an evil and had the guts to express that. Now it's all cower and blame ourselves… a symptom of problems overall beyond the fictional character.
Someone needs to start a conservative comic publishing company. I would even volunteer my time as a 30+ year reader/collector of comics to help write and come up with ideas. We need true heroes in our Comics the way Superman and Captain America used to be.
Someone who can live up to the examples set by our brave heroes in uniform across the globe.
I agree edword. Nice post. Now can anyone tell What is going on with GI Joe? we went to the toy store and I noticed he is no longer in red white and blue nor is he the "Great American Hero" The toys were being package in blue. UN Blue. And the lable was just "Hero." I think my older kids are going to revolt over this one. with cap America and now it seems GI JOE we are no longer suppose to be proud of America or what it stands for. A sad timefor us and our kids.
Bosch great work! You know what you’re saying is jingoistic, war mongering. Captain America is a capitalistic pig trying to enslave the world with things like flush toilets, and air-conditioning. You probably believe in things like American exceptionalism. Barry has told us that he’s going to knock us down a peg or two because it’s only fair. All kidding aside I love Captain America, and your drawings are cool.
I think Joe probably thought Martin Sheen was actually president.
Some folks are negative-rating my comment, when what I really meant is that Bosch could never successfully write a Captain America because he (Bosch) is simply too darned awesome.
And you don't need anything to roll on your back and show your belly, eh? Ya putz.
They also need to be good. As much as I'd like to see more unapologetically American stuff, I don't want it sullied by badly-written, pandering pablum. Not trying to damn your little dream, just asking you to tread carefully.
Kinda hard to do anyway. By now DC and Marvel have created a "junk" character of almost every possible codename and would also sue based on character likenesses (especially if they don't like you). Good idea though, one I've thought of too. That's a main reason why I doubt it's possible. Just boycott the movies and Marvel will likely go bankrupt… AGAIN.
Quit being a tool. The Lebanese had major elections that sent Hezbollah packing. I bet you can't guess who they thanked the most? GW Bush, that's right not Obama's apologizing, it was GW Bush! So go back to name calling and reading your copy of "Prairie Fire" and let the adults speak.
"They shouted: "Syria out!" They shouted: “We want no other army in Lebanon except the Lebanese army!'' They shouted: “Freedom, sovereignty, independence!''
Thank you, Mr. Bush.
No one could shut them up. They were determined. They’ve had it with corrupt politic. They see a New Iraq democracy come into being, with much sacrifice, nevertheless, rising out of the blood into blossoms real.
They witness a Ukraine now overseen by liberty champions.
They read about Afghanistan’s republic built upon a brand-new, never-had-before Constitution.
Now Lebanese, fed up with Syrian intrusion and a pro-Syrian head, demand their own democracy-planting.
Thank you, Mr. Bush."
Joe Biden, is that you?

Captain America was born when men were men and WW2 was the only news. Since Captain America was made using "super soldier" serum from a defense project in the 40's its clear why we wouldnt see him now. Why portray armed forces or DOD as anything for good? We need a Captain America now….Ray Davies wrote "Catch Me Now I'm Falling" back in the 1970's with Captain America telling the world 'we bailed you out but dont come running back' for any more help. Looks like we need Ray and Captan America too. Edited to add: I dont think we need anyones help these days but its clear back in the 70's Ray Davies saw the weakness of America under Jimmy Carter and wrote that song. Just my opinion anyway.
By now DC and Marvel have created a "junk" character of almost every possible codename…
Please elaborate.

I thought Marvel knocked off Captain America in 2007. From what I remember he had been declared a criminal by the government because of his opposition to the "so called" War on Terror and then got whacked. (I seem to recall that back in the early 1970's Steve Rogers was so disgusted with post-Watergate America that he became a toally different superhero named Nomad.) Never forget that Stan Lee is a major lib and a big-time fundraiser for the Democrats. I suppose Marvel will bring Cap back so that he can work for health care reform and cap-and-trade.
Thanks to those with the good words, I appreciate it.
Now, I just picked up Captain America #600 which sets up Cap's return in 'Reborn', and it's the first issue of Captain America I've gotten in a while. Can anyone out there help get me up to speed about Norman Osborn's current position in the Marvel Universe, and more particularly his comment to a crowd that gathered to mark the one year anniversary of Cap's 'death': 'I'm sure the Left wants you to think I didn't Respect Captain America and what he stood for….but it's Simply not true.'

I'm tempted to give you a thumbs down for declaring that your favorite Bond film!
Uhhhhh– is there a reason that my comment saying that this country is still great got deleted?
Actually Islam means to submit. They only started the Islam means Peace BS to confuse people to the real meaning of the word and to try and prevent post 9/11 lynchings.
Osborn is, head of some big alphabet agency called HAMMER because he shot the Skrull Queen on national TV (long, long story). But he's being treated more like he's a president named Bush, if you get my drift. Frankly, it doesn't suit him. He's a street-level supercriminal who exclusively hounds Spider-Man. I can't imagine why he's been promoted like this, so to speak. I guess he's an Evil Republican just because he used to be a business man. I dunno.
I don't read Marvel anymore, but I do keep up, mostly for the amusement value.
I'd settle for more apolitical comics. Chuck Dixon is a conservative, but in most of his comics, the politics are implicit rather than explicit.
Their was a time when I could "escape" the horrors of the real world by reading a comic book, playing a video game or watching a movie but since pop culture has gone mainstream over that last decade those days are
over. Captain America (and Marvel in general) is a shadow of his former self. The last time I read a CPT America comic was back in the 90's and the story line had Cap trying to find a serial killer who was wiping out
some of Marvels b-list villains. CAP is no longer viable but the sad thing is that he can be. It's like listeining to President Obama give a speech. Obama makes a statement that is powerful and supportive of our country which makes you want to stand and cheer. But then he will turn around and betray that very statement by saying something that appeases the Left (21 percent of the country), the muslim community or European
socialist.
____This is the problem with Captain America or should I say the left leaning, liberal writers at Marvel. Yes, like a lot of 30 somethings I too proudly proclaimed "make mine marvel" but no longer. Marvel and it's characters used to stand for something. They used to champion good causes, go against the grain and stand boldly on their soap boxes. Now, much like their Hollywood elitist counterparts, Marvel is another sheep in the fold. They have become the very thing they used to deplore and it's so very sad. Maybe one day a reformation of sorts will happen but I won't hold my breath. Captain America didn't die last year but years ago and like Marvel it will rise again only to be a former shell of itself. Nuff said………..
Really, I would like to see Captain America punch nuke-wielding Kim Jong Il with the million-man army over a bunch of whacked-out Arabians with Chinese AK-47's. I feel a little more threatened by a North Korean mushroom cloud than I do an IED.
That's just my thoughts though.
Thanks, ChristopherMC, it is strange that he seems to be *the* heavy in the entire Marvel Universe, outside of Spider-Man's world.
Ugh… Jingoistic flag-waving garbage.
I never understood what was so damn appealing about "comic books" anyways, but Captain America? Gag.
Jingoistic flag-waving garbage…
Hmm, yes. Our Constitution and democracy certainly offend the "Muslim theocratic" demographic, as well as the Socialist, Communist, and Nazi demographics. For that, I am proud!
Contrary to leftist belief, we do have a society worth fighting for, even if it isn't utopia.
The best line Cap had in the Ultimates was "Surrender? Surrender? This 'A' doesn't stand for France!!!"
Actually both Marvel and DC have done a great job of updating most of their characters, especially DC. Infinite Crisis was probably the best series I had read since the original. Also recommend the "hush" storyline in Batman. Unfortunately, most of the current stock of comics are too politcaly charged for me, so I recommend wikipedia if you want to keep up with what's going on without wasting your money on comics that lean left.
I'm assuming Nulldude means Marvel and DC probably have copyright protection on a number of characters they use once or twice to fulfill the legal aspect of owning the name. They most likely never intend to use them other than to prevent anyone else from creating a character too similar to theirs.
One of the company I work for clients does that same thing. Every 10 years or so they make a "Limited Edition" of five or six brands they own but never market. The sole purpose is to put a package with that name on a shelf in store where they can photograph it and file it with the Trademark and Copyright Office.
That happened to me a month or so ago. Except it was "every" post. No one from the web site ever replied to help me either. I finally created a new profile. My old profile (USArtboy) is still up at Intense Debate.
I stopped givng Marvel any of my money when they killed Captain America as a statement against the War on Terror. They don't deserve it, and won't get any more of it.
Cap's replacement carried a piece – jihads do not exist in the Marvel Universe, unless they are in forms of skrulls – Cap still fights fascism in the form of the Red Skull – I read Cap monthly for escapism and entertainment – which you should give a chance an read – Brubaker's Cap (Steve Rogers) was willing to charge in and take out the bad guys – it's been a legendary run – Also Marvel routinely publishes single issues in print runs of a million to be given free to the men and women of our military.
Cap is American as he ever was.
You're all kidding right?
why arent these comic book characters being migrated to the web by all of you political geniuses?
afraid of a little copyright infringement ? ….. Thats being a bit whimpy……
Captain America, Batman, Superman, etc have always been a mirror of one side of society…..thats whats made them popular……when you get into wanting your comic books to carry any political doctrine, you've kind of lost the whole point……
stop whining about pecieved nonsense and get off your loathsome spotty behinds and get involved in the world you live in……
Hopefully, Marvel Comics will still exist after said attack. If a terrorist attack on New York is nuclear, conservative critics and decling sales will be the least of Marvel's worries.
@ChristopherMC
I admit to enjoying Invincible Iron Man because of the conflict between the superhero and Osborn, who seems like an indictment of the Obama administration.
I'll also admit that the movie portrayed Iron Man as a pro-military, pro-capitalism conservative. So, that could be coloring my view of the comic, which could be trying to criticize ex-President Bush. But it's still eerie how the fictional criminal-controlled America ruled by Osborn echoes where the current administration is trying to take us.
Thorcules is 100% correct…I find it eerie how a similar coalition of international creeps has done exactly what was "predicted" in the Ultimate line.
fyi-that unnamed Middle Eastern country was Iran and Cap the the ULTIMATE DEFENSE INITIATIVE took out the Natanz "uranium enrichment" facility. Check the art.
Sure glad I held back from selling earlier copies so I can look at the old version that had guts and not pol.cor.
I've been reading books with the character of Matt and Mack Bolan. They kick and take terrorist names.
Too bad we've come to this in this country.
Makes many of us that fought for and died for this country and its' values wish there would have years ago, been more birth control.
Fawstin actually does blame for Marvel for Cap's inaction against Jihad:
For a time after 9/11, I was naive enough to believe I could write and draw a Captain America story where the jihadist’s get what’s coming to them, with no apology and with full fury. I stopped cold when I realized there’d be no chance in hell of Marvel Comics allowing Cap to say and do what had to be said and done against this enemy. I wised up and created the perfect enemy against Jihad.
NEO-CONS means "Jews".
It's well past time the NEO-LIBERALS stop using their coded-HATE SPEECH.
Norman Osborn and Barak Hussein Obama-Soetoro have the same shadowed profile.
interesting.
I don't see what so appealing about "comic-news" like the Daily Show.
LOL
we all have our guilty pleasures.
You do know Marvel killed Capt. America 2 years ago right?
Unintentionally, I think. Marvel maybe doesn't realize what it looks like.
Bosch, I know what you mean. I almost attempted to show my Cap story at Wizard World in Philly last week, but that was a passing moment of naivete. I'm convinced that the mainstream comics are nothing but bootleg romanticists. I'd love for Cap to have made a real stand; but more and more, I'm afraid this is his fate. A SHOW OF HANDS:A Cautionary Tale of Heroes is Exile.
But hey, it seems the Iranians are starting to wise up, maybe there is a Pigman, after all.
Oh how "clever"… Your comebacks remind me of an elementary school full of half-pint jerks at recess
So you're proud that you are entwined into a system of hypocrisy, oppression, and arrogant disregard for other life on this planet?
Kendama, you are part of the PROBLEM in this world, not the solution. Good day.
@Thomas Talionis
Sadly, until we have a conservative in the White House, that line simply isn't as funny.
Blogger Kevin McCullough summed it up best, When did a Frenchman out "man" an American?:
http://kevinmccullough.townhall.com/blog/g/4433ad...
And here are more "outrageous" (i.e., anti-Jihad) statements from France's President Nicolas Sarkozy:
http://barenakedislam.wordpress.com/2009/06/19/fr...
WOW!
I' m have to pass this one along to other comic fans I know.
Nulldude
"Kinda hard to do anyway. By now DC and Marvel have created a "junk" character of almost every possible codename and would also sue based on character likenesses (especially if they don't like you). "
I don't believe Marvel and DC (a.k.a., the "Big Two") are quite so powerful.
Indy superhero comic Invincible has featured bit villains who share codenames with Marvel and DC characters: Rampage, Mastermind, etc. Yet, the comic's creator Robert Kirkman has yet to be sued by the "Big Two." The key is that Kirkman's characters look nothing like the "Big Two" characters.
So, I think you can safely create a new superhero with the same code name as a Marvel or DC character.
What is so wrong about Bosch plugging Pigman? I don't see Bosch's advertising as offensive in this context, he's offering a product that directly ties into the point of his article. Besides, with the liberal agenda firmly in place, there's not much in the way of third-party P.R. available to spread his message. Sometimes, if you want something done, you have to do it yourself, you know? He doesn't have Marvel or DC type publicity teams.
What exactly is wrong with self-advertising? Does it always have to be third-party endorsements; should he selflessly ignore his own work? Aren't we grown-up enough here to judge for ourselves whether or not he's offering something worthwile?
"He only lives to do his duty and serve his country."
Well, there's part of the problem: the package deal that says one is either a glory-hound or a selfless servant of others. Ayn Rand already presented a third-option: the rationally hero who neither rules nor submits. A truly free soldier has no "duty" to others and does not "serve" his country; defends and protects, yes, but because it is in his own interest to do so, for his life and the lives of those he or she cares about.
And I think that's why Dixon keeps finding work even in the liberal offices of Marvel and DC. Of course, he also gets indy work like G.I. Joe:
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&a...
And The Man With No Name inspired by the Clint Eastwood classic, the "Good the Bad and the Ugly":
http://www.newsarama.com/comics/080820-DixonMWNN….
"Marvel and it's characters used to stand for something. They used to champion good causes, go against the grain and stand boldly on their soap boxes."
Sadly, Marvel's ethics were tainted from the get-go; witness the ideological departure of Steve Ditko.
"I just love how neo-CONS are so sorry that they now need fictitious heroes from comic books to fight their whimsical quixotic battles all over the globe, since the rest of the world are sick of their lustful need to shed blood."
To which this Joe replies:
The left had no problem using Captain Planet to spread their anti-industrial and anti-man agenda, and they had no problem co-opting Captain America for their own purposes.
Pot. Kettle. Black.
and Burt Kwouk- 'Kato' from the Pink Panther films- was a Red Chinese agent in 'Goldfinger' but a SPECTRE agent in 'You Only Live Twice', and Ed Bishop ('UFO') was in both 'Twice' as a Cape Canaveral tech and was the immortal 'Klaus Hergesheimer ("checking radiation shields") in 'Diamonds Are Forever' as well…
love our Bond films, we do…
on location in Japan the pre-production team learned of the Ninja and although the book was hardly followed at all it too, dabbled in the Japanese code of Bushido. The training sequence, shot in late 1966 is still the Cadillac of the genre; often imitated and never duplicated. It brought the western world to the warrior culture and opend up the market for martial arts films.
Just another little factoid on how the Bond films impacted society. There is much more…
the year I was born. My wife would call that fitting.
considering your professed ninja-like qualities, not only is it fitting but it should be required viewing each birthday as well…
in my case, more ninja turtle like, but that's just semantics.
my goodness, no 'guilty pleasure' there- 'Twice' was re-made with Roger Moore and Lewis Gilbert returning to the helm as 'The Spy Who Loved Me', a film while entertaining (and wildly popular) is not as good in any respect as the Connery opus…
It may not be his best but easily tops the Moore/DaltonBrosnan nexus!
