‘Sons of Guns’: Love of America, Firearms and Our Troops Equals a Hit Show
by AWR HawkinsWhen The Learning Channel (TLC) carried “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” the premiere drew record ratings. Salt-of-the-earth citizens in flyover country loved it, as they always love pro-American programming, and they turned off ABC, CBS, and NBC to turn on TLC and watch Palin talk about the greatness of America as seen from a mountain-top or a fishery or a hunting camp in Alaska.
In a similar vein, those folks in flyover country now have another good reason to turn off ABC, CBS, and NBC – that reason is “Sons of Guns,” a ratings hit on the Discovery Channel. And to watch this show is to watch pride in America unfolding in episode after episode.
The show follows the business of Red Jacket Firearms in Baton Rouge, LA. Owned by Will Hayden, Red Jacket repairs, as well as sells, firearms (and firearm accessories). They also build guns when Will sees a need for a weapon that no one else has made (like an AK-47 sniper rifle). And it’s hard to find an episode where some positive mention isn’t made of our troops overseas: or as Will call them, “our boys that are serving overseas.”
For example, in the episode where Will decided to get his crew working on the world’s first AK-47 sniper rifle, he justified all the headaches of creating such a weapon by reminding himself that the gun would help our troops: “It’s definitely not the money that we’re throwing our hat in the ring for. These will be going out to small units of our boys that are serving overseas. (And) that changes the game enough for me to want to do it.”
For any of you not familiar with AK-47’s or sniper rifles, the AK-47 is famous for its flawless semi-auto action, but it is infamous for its lack of accuracy. On the other hand, a sniper rifle is famous for its accuracy but infamous for the difficulty of getting off a timely second shot in certain situations. Will knew that combining the best of both guns would create a new weapon that might very well change everything for “our boys that are serving overseas.”
Will talked of how war tests not just our soldiers, but the weapons they use as well. And with the AK-47 sniper rifle, he said: “At a thousand yards every time, I’ll sit on my mountain top and knock [the enemy’s] earlobes off.”
Folks, as you watch Will’s work ethic and see how he thinks, and listen to him talk in an accent that no one will ever confuse with a New Yorker or a Chicagoan, it doesn’t take long to figure out he’s the real deal. And when you hear how our troops are always on his mind or you see the episode where he hosted WWII Veterans at his gun range, it becomes easy to give him the greatest compliment of all – real American.
When the Discovery Channel decided to tap into America’s love for guns with this program, I don’t know if they fully knew that a gift they were giving us in Will Hayden. But almost everyone to whom I’ve spoken tells me they either watch the show every chance they get or they DVR it so they never miss an episode.
Like me, they love to see Will sitting there grinning in the smoke that floats up after shooting five or six rounds, and listening to him say: “Some of my best ideas have been born right out of that gun smoke.”
Mr. Hayden: Thank you for using Red Jacket Firearms to honor “our boys that are serving overseas” and the vets from WWII.

Thanks! Wow! Wonder what happened. Did they mean this as a spoof that became a hit? Look forward to watching one program that elevates a normal American versus the trash on the MSM channels.
That's gonna be on my Hulu list!
I am an avid gun enthusiast and I enjoy the show for the most part, however, Will Hayden is pretty much a dick, which makes it inevitable that I turn the channel at some point during the show.
Agreed, it's a cool show! I just hope they don't end up with all the drama of American Chopper.
I watched one episode and thought the owner was a jerk. Seems all these "reality" shows have to have personal conflicts going to create drama. Pawnstars is one of the worst of these. The producers feel the subject matter isn't interesting enough so they have to have the characters be drama queens. I love guns and America, but can't stand the imbeciles on these shows. Even Topshots is annoying with the team members constantly picking on each other.
I've always wanted to see if someone could build an automatic wrist pistol, like the DC villain Deadshot uses.
I need to start recording this!
But, I thought an "AK-47 Sniper Rifle" was called a "Dragunov" and used 7.62 x54R instead of 7.62×39?
Lots of people will stop to see a train wreck also.
WHERE WERE YOU?

I think they noticed that myths about guns are always incredibly popular on Mythbusters (and also noted the ratings for Top Shot on their competitor, the History Channel), and some executive thought that they could build a show around insane, over-the-top guns. What they probably didn't expect was that Will and his employees would be just as compelling to audiences as their products, as evidenced by the fact that they expanded the show from thirty minutes to an hour so the editors could flesh out more complete storylines.
Speaking of which, I missed the season finale. Is Chris dating Stephanie now?
I watched it back to back last night, into the wee hours and LOVED it! Well, most of it. The knife gun cracked me up, and I want a RJ AR in 7.62!
Love the show! However, some of the people on the show (mostly the customers) seem to protray the sterotype of dumb, Southern hicks. But that is my only beef. The show is great and this article is great!
Uh huh.
Not to mention that there are already semi-auto sniper rifles.
But hey–why should Hawkins let facts get in his way? It's really amazing. He suddenly discovers something and says "wow! I'm gonna write a post for a Big site on this!" and then everyone says "wow!". It's just silly.

etc.
I like that Will Hayden honors our military, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to work for him.
The show is great, as a "gun nut" I love to see them work on weapons I'd never be able to see otherwise.
Yes, it is kinda dopey to think that this AK/Sniper rifle is an amazing development but take it easy on Hawkins.
Not everybody is as weapon literate as you and others here may be, so cut the guy a little slack.
This show is awesome. Who wouldnt want to work for the man? Well unless your lazy and can not take a strong boss. Yeah he gets mad at his employee but he also treats them well and from what I understand is generous to them. He is a hard ass, hard worker, who demands that his people give the same as him. He is a true American hero. He should be praised not just for his lvoe of America or the love of or troops but for his great leadership and business skills. If Obama wants to see how real jobs are created he should look no forward then this company. Jobs are created by hardworking small business owners like Will who see and oppurtunity and take it work hard and bust ass. They are not created by union cronies with set hours, set pay, and unlimited benefits.
This is a great show, I love the respect they all have for the fine art of gun-making not to mention the massive rush it is to shoot a really cool firearm…!!!!
As far as Will's being a jerk, I think many working people think their boss is a jerk. You have to remember that the buck stops with Will. If his employees don't produce a quality product every time, one or more of our boys' lives are on the line.
I dont get all of the comments about Will being a dick. Yeah he is a hard ass who can get upset butg he also treats his employees like family. His employees love him, did you not see the episode where he was joking with one of them about the bad comments on the site. Yeah he is hard and demands alot but it is HIS company and he does reward them and give them a PAYCHECK and BENFITS.
I agree that he is an ass at times but no more than Paul Tuttle of OCC was and look how far that show is going. I personally couldnt work for the man since there is a difference between taking orders and being talked to like a 3 year old from a drill sergant, its another case when you are an employee and employer.
My other issue with the show is that he is TOO obsessed with the AK and likes to over look all the flaws it has in regards to accuracy and weight. The show with the sniper AK took 3 rounds to hit the target the sniper was shooting out. Enuff said.
Amen
What is peddled as "Reality" TV is really scripted and heavily edited with gobs of contrived drama, otherwise it would be as watchable as surveillance footage.
If you think Will Hayden is a dick you should work offshore. Everybody has thier own style of leadership but a hardass is actually easier to please than a wishy washy manager type. You always know where you stand with a hardass but have no idea with the wishy washy manager. A hardass is less likely to stab you in the back, he will do it right in front of you for all to see.
Slack only goes so far though, he lost me when he was trying to silence a Mark 19 grenade launcher. Come on, it doesnt have much if a report to begin with it more of a whoomp and does not in any sense of the word need a silencer. Not to mention that in a lot of states silencers are not only unlawful but strictly controlled for those that are allowed to have them.
Cool show. They have a lot of fun.
"The show with the sniper AK took 3 rounds to hit the target the sniper was shooting out. Enuff said."
The shot actually went through the windshield and the rear glass to hit the target. The windshield glass deflected the first shots and did not provide enough of an obstacle to deflect the third. The car was also at an oblique angle, this amplified the deflection of the shots. It was a success and proved the advantage of a simi-automatic where a clear path is not present. http://dsc.discovery.com/videos/sons-of-guns-ak-s...
My biggtest complaint would be that they had so much trouble coming up with ammo for the Japanese T 38 rirle. There are two companies loading this ammo, Norma, which has been loading the round for 50 years or so,. and Hornady which started loading it 3-4 years back. 25 dollars a box of 20. You can google it. plus they charged 150 bucks for the little worrk, and 9 rounds they made.
he acts like the the former Marine he is.
Not to mention this is a reality series, and the producers need to have some conflict; this dovetails the nascent romance between Kris and his daughter. So he plays up the tough guy thing a bit…
one of the best shows on TV…
Took some getting used to. But as former military, the creativity and resourcefulness of this crew is invigorating.
Civilians may not appreciate the show as much. But, for example- taking a Mk 19 40mm automatic grenade launcher and not only making it a precision single shot weapon was inspired- but fabricating sound suppression ('silencer') for it was flat out brilliant.
As the season progressed, the basic goodness of everyone involved was addicting; you actually want to know these folk- unlike, say, the Alaska fishing shows which are exciting but the guys are complete jerks. Even
'IRT'- Ice Road Truckers- the saving grace is how awesome the girls who drive the Dalton are; the guys are forgettable rubes.
Great stuff…
Ever looked at his web site? He sells AKs and Saiga shotguns. If he didn't already know about the Dragunov, he isn't as firearms saavy as he lets on. I watched part of that episode but tuned out after a few minutes. A 1,000 yard sniper rifle using the 7.62 x 39mm round? Gimme a break. Was he even able to hit the paper at that range?
It also must be a short range sniper rifle at best. The 7.62X39 cartridge doesn't have enough down range energy to go to 1,000 yards and penitrate anything. Someone needs to tell Will that marine and army squads now carry an M-14 or SOG for semiautomatic sniper rifle duty. Just as reliable as the AK but with the 7.62 NATO cartridge, it has plenty of punch downrange and both are deadly accurate out of the box.
I watched a few episodes. It is a fun, fun show. Some of the failures (such as a "floatation device for guns in water") are just as fun as the successes (HE Grenade launched into a small structure turns into kindling).
Most of thre time he puts pretty insane demands on his people and then has a meltdown when they run into problems. That's not being a jerk, that's being a complete douche….
That being said, I could think of worse jobs than making and playing with guns….
The show is a lot of fun and they do work on some very cool firearms. For a gunner like me, it is a perfect fit. It has it's warts but overall I like the cast even grouchy Will and I try to watch the show frequently. The guys just built a 12 Gauge gatiling gun that was very impressive and they have WWII stuff like a antitank cannon that was really great! Will reminds me of my crusty old platoon sargent in the Marines so I know where he is coming from.
Mike Bloomberg just fainted.
Been watching and a fan since it's debut.
Top Shot and SoG are the only shows I DVR anymore. Some of the drama is clearly manufactured but that's to be expected on a reality show.
you got that right. A hardass is probably going to tell you something you needed to hear anyway. Truth hurts sometimes and life ain't fair. The choice is yours; stay or go.
Met this crew recently at a gun show outside of BR, LA and I must say, they are a gracious bunch. Their booth is display only (no sales), but discussions abound between the show and the services they provide…..nice folks, and they show a side of Louisiana that compliments, rather than exploits for amusement…
Roger that…..a scripted reality show……WTF????
Phuckin A….
Great show! Last time we drove through B.R. by 13 year old almost hijacked our car trying to convince me to go to Red Jacket. After watching the show a few times, I think that our hajj to Red Jacket Firearms will not be too long in coming.
His obsession with the AK is because that's where his bread and butter is … yes he builds a nice lightweight AR for someone else, but most of his business is built around the Saiga rifle and shotgun (which are decent quality Russian made AK's with regular sporting style stocks to get around import bans … his living is made returning these guns to their original configuration).
He's a savvy businessman that knows his product and knows his market but yes he's a dick sometimes.
Worked offshore one time on a rig with an old time company man that everyone was afraid of, except me and a few others. Sure he would dress me down sometimes so I would go and see him and make sure that I was doing what he wanted. Never had a problem with this guy but his relief was just the opposite. I had to hear from my office if he was unhappy and it was real difficult to know what he really wanted.
You're probably like me and would find American Gunsmithing Institute videos entertaining.
Most folk need some drama and color to keep them watching (this is supposed to be entertainment afterall).
I don't mind because the more non-gun folk that watch these shows the more that gun ownership in general ins "normalized" and the less likely that people will support gun control.
This is how it has worked with homosexuality … TV has been showing us more and more entertaining and non-threatening homosexual imagery for the last 3-4 decades and the result has been a general populace that is more and more comfortable with homosexuals at first and eventually will embrace the entire gay rights agenda.
I don't mind using "their" tactics for "our" side
Be cautious with your praise. Lets not forget this is a show wholly owned by a very large cog in the wheel of the liberal / progressive machine. Their motives are never on the surface what they appear. But I do agree, thus far, it has been a great show.
True, but real Dragunovs are expensive and hard to find … Romanian PSLs suck and most of Red Jackets market base are guys that like AKs and don't have tons of cash (which is frankly why they like AKs).
For what his AK sniper will cost the end user they could buy a more accurate and more powerful AR-10 type rifle … but that's not his market and even though I'd rather not own one (I'll stick with my ARs thankyouverymuch) I enjoyed watching the episode where he made his accurized AK … made a lot more sense to me than his Saiga12 based "Master Key".
No I don't expect his sniper AK will end up in the hands of "our boys serving overseas" … at best it'll end up in the arsenal of some rural Sheriff's department's SWAT team.
Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.
Great commentary. Oorah.
no surprise there…
Some of the nicest folk in the world hail from there. What is so appealing is just how genuine they are.
Compare to the rubes on 'IRT'- and how venal, and petty they are. Good, old fashioned gentile Southern graciousness. Followed by insane bursts of gunfire…
"Good, old fashioned gentile Southern graciousness. Followed by insane bursts of gunfire…"
LOL! THAT is the best description of Southerners I have ever read!
I thought the .338 Lapua was preferred for shots that the .308 (7.62 Nato) can't effectively reach.
um, check the collection on the walls of his office sometime, children. SEVERAL Dragunovs. the idea was to create a rifle that would take AK mags and ammo, but give Special Forces operatives a 1,000 yard weapon. and the rifle was dead on.
and the 7.62 x 51mm is NOT readily available behind the lines in the hinterlands of Afghanistan and Iraq. 7.62×39 IS. that was the point behind the rifle. and the 7.62×39 has more than enough power to kill at 1,000 yards.
iron fist in a velvet glove, as Top used to say…
look, I like the guy too. however, when you come up with the idea for something that no one has ever done before, give your people 2 weeks to do it, and throw a fit every time some problem comes up, you're being a dick not a savvy business man.
By now everyone should recognize that these type shows center on an alpha male. They tend to glorify America but first they glorify masculinity. There are a lot of tattoes and facial hair. No metrosexuals. I love the show. The point that seems to missed here is that unlike American Chopper the guys are actually creating something. The motorcycle show is all about superfluous ornamentation. Their motorcycles are not tuned for performance or handling. They just add doo-dads to stock machines. The Red Jacket crew deal primarily with how their guns function. The American Chopper people dwell on how their bikes look. After a while American Chopper is just boring. Who cares about putting corporate logos on off the shelf choppers.
and I believe he messed his drawers first
Hopefully it makes it to Hulu! I've checked a few times (dumped cable a year ago – just too expensive) and they always link to the Discovery Channel website. I do hope Hulu gets the license for the show though.
Well, working with an AK and 7.62×39, that's an engineering miracle!
Everyone who watches the show probably recognizes that there are other semi-auto sniper rifles. That's hardly the point. This particular configuration may or may not fill a market slot but it is new and might sell. One thing I know for certain, if there is a potential customer in the US, he will have seen or will soon be directed to watch this episode. I too would have thought that an M-14 would make more sense, but M-14s already exist, so where's the TV show? BTW the guys at American Chopper seem to have all become millionaires. Paul senior has an stunning garage. Paully Jr. bought himself a hottie.
Like the show for the most part. Kind of getting sick of their constant AK-47 promotion. I'd prefer to see a much broader spectrum of weapons, not just AK, AK, AK and more AK.
Not sure what OCC has to do with it, but didn't I see a news headline the other day saying Paul Sr and the OCC shop were in foreclosure or something?
Don't get me started on the "girls" of the Dalton. Lisa can be okay, but Maya is a complete waste who was babied all season because she had great float wings in a bikin.
And they screwed over the actual real trucker–Dave R.
THe Daughter is the S@%t.She knows more about guns then most gun collectors.
There have been revolving shotguns for years. I don't watch the show–I tried it once and turned it off after about ten minutes (and I'm as big a gun nut as anyone)–so what was so special about a 12 g. Gatling?
Perhaps–but I remember a few weeks ago when he had a brief post about a singer that said nothing at all and even quoted some lyrics wrong.
I don't know. Hawkins just seems to me to be a paper expert.
But what do I know?
Maybe they are dumb Southern hicks. We have dumb Northern hicks and dumb Northern non-hicks up here in Ohio, too.
URwhatiswrong.(period)
Love Will Hayden even with the tyrant behavior, sometimes that is how things need to get done, period. My boys and I watch this show as often as we can. We plan on taking a trip down to Red Stick, LA and stopping by and picking up the AK sniper.
Not exactly true. The 7.62X39 drops 11" at 1,000 yds and is traveling at only 220 FPS or less depending on wind and weather. Won't penttrate body armor or sheet metal. That makes the round more inadequate for sniping than a 5.56 as the NATO round will still be in the 320 to 460 FPS range at 1,000 yards. The minimum round for 1,000 yards is the .308 or 7.62 NATO.
They were already messed from when he saw somebody smoking a cigarette on 5th Avenue.
.338 Lapua is a damn good round and is being seen much more these days. The SOG could be modified to fire it and there are newer semiautomatic rifles that accept the .338 lapua but they are a bit too heavy for squad carry at this point. More of a setup sniper weapon than a carry weapon. The .338 ammo is 20% heavier than the .308/7.62 NATO so in semiautos with large mags, it is an overall heavier weapon and ammo load to field carry. The newer version of the M-40 has been retrofitted for the .338 but it is bolt action only.
The best episode involved modifying a semi-auto shotgun for a young vet who had lost the use of his right arm. The smile on the young man's face was priceless when was able to hunt again. When Will and the boys gave the gun the young man, you saw true man to man respect and warmth. Very well done.
Discovery Channel has a long history of common-man/flyoverland programming actually. Of course they have no short supply of global warming claptrap either, but Sons of Guns fits right into their flyoverland side.
Be sure to make it clear who you're talking about: Paul Teutul SENIOR. Except for where his father is concerned, Paul Teutul JUNIOR, or Paulie, is a good soul.
Thanks for writing an article on this show, Mr. Hawkins!
It is a terrific show…the husband DVR's it so we never miss an episode. When the husband first told me about the show, I kinda rolled my eyes, but I have come to deeply appreciate the series. The relationship between Will and his daughter who runs his business is tender and deep and the weapons and accessories they manufacture (anyone need a silencer for a shotgun, Will made one) are fascinating.
Glad to see that the show has taken off as it has.
To quote another Discovery Channel hit: "Jamie want big boom."
I'll have to keep an eye on his show it seems.
Like the show, but an "AK-47 sniper rifle" is not a game changer. It's not like semi-auto sniper rifles don't already exist and the AK platform ain't magical.
i watch Sons of Guns every week. Rarely do I miss then I'll catch the re-runs! Will Hayden IS the man and a rock star too!
Uh you're right on all points but I would challenge you to find a more reliable action than the AK. Old man Kalyshnakov got it right on this one.
I bought a Rifle from Red Jacket several years ago..They did good work and I've never had a problem with it.. Now If I could only get his daughters telephone number..
They have been in foreclosure for over 2 years. Not sure how OCC can continue to run a business which is on a down hill slide and then state that Junior has no future in the business.
I'd pay good money if you were tied to the tracks.
I have to agree, while being in the military and having a drill sargent talk to you like you are a 3 year old is one thing, having your employer do the same to an employee is another. When one of his guys wanted to get a guage to get a precise measurement to ensure there werent any problems and Will went off on him I would have told him to shove it as I wasnt going to guess on something that could kill a customer.
I like the show because they do stuff that a lot of us see and think, "I've always wondered if you could do that." Like the tri-mese M-16 mount or the quad MG42, or a noise suppressor for a shotgun. The show where they restored and fired the 20mm ATK rifle was great, as was the one where they restored and let WWII vets fire a US 57mm ATK gun, but my favorite, was where the old WWII vet, who hauled a flame thrower in the Pacific, showed the kids how it was done and explained some of the actions that led to him receiving the CMH. Most importantly, they blow stuff up.
Shoot benchrest, plink, reload, hunt. Major gun guy. Think this show stinks.
That's because you're mentally ill.
Ha ha ha, I know what you mean! I see them everyday here in PA! Great reply!
I am probably going to get a lot of flak for this comment but I need to write it: Will Hayden has a SMOKING HOT DAUGHTER!!!
No. It's because you deserve it.
You fit the profile of a serial killing long haul truck driver.
You fit the profile of a pole-smoking moron
Who cares?
Pole-smoking is that what they call it at the truck stop? We gonna find some gay hookers blood in your cab?
Red Jacket every wed night !
This was week a rerun
…
Lisa rocks, she did the Himalayas…
Maya is a stretch, sure- they didn't miss the chance to get her in a bikini, eh? That Thom Beers…
Dave is such an anti-social jerkoff that he had to go. You have to sort of like the people in the show.
All of the guys are idiots, basically. But having trained up there once upon a time, just groove on the danger of the drives…
You would know. You're the one who does it for a living.
Drop dead, asswipe.
Meh. I like Lisa–don't get me wrong. I have a lot of respect for her. I get that they edit the hell out of what they shoot and anyone can come off good or bad–I just didn't like her this past season. Alternating between whining and acting like a big shot…which I'm sure goes back at least in large part to the editing.
I like Dave. He's serious …well, fill in the blank, I don't want to get my post deleted LOL. But he's also a hell of a driver, a guy who just goes out and gets it done.
And they edited it bad to make him the villain, it still bugged me. I mean–giving a guy with 25 or 30 years experience a training driver who's about as old as Dave's been driving who started off with this whole 'you'll respect me or else' vibe (a guy that had just totaled his own rig, btw)? Then making him stay in a convoy behind Maya, who was hauling a pick up–literally, hauling an F-150 while Dave has what, 100K of food and necessary supplies on? Then they tell him to go around then they tell the boss he passed on a blind corner and almost hit a car? Man, that was crap.
The way I'm wired–as soon as I saw that, no matter how much a dink Dave was, he was gonna be my guy.
LOL.
I can't believe I got roped into it again, honestly. I watched the first season and thought it was cool, then they turned it into another of Thom Beers' soap operas and I hadda bail.
But I like Dave.
Correct me if I'm wrong but, I beleive the .338 is a long action for belted magnums and the .308 is a short action. Englands SAS has been using the .338 Lapua for years. It is an awsome round.
That 7.62 x 39 is similar to the 30-30 Win. and I don't think it is a 1000 yd round in anybodies book. If it did make it out to 1000yds the trajectory would look like a rainbow.
