Madonna – love her or hate her. Some think she has no talent, while others have named their daughters after her.

Some think her career is pure marketing and her fans believe she’s a real trend setter. There has always been a wide range of opinions about this woman, an entertainer who has enough monikers to be in the witness protection program. As her personal life has evolved through marriages, children and boyfriends, her songs are what are more familiar to people.

For the first time since she became famous, she got to be the star attraction at the Super Bowl Halftime Show. What aspect of her performance did people focus on? Her voice? Nope. What she wore? Not really. Her new song? Sure, a little. Her age? Bingo, report her to AARP, stat!

How dare she try to pull off that type of show as a woman who has experienced more than three decades on the planet? Perish the thought! She has some nerve being on that stage and lifting her leg up at the age of 53. Where are her Mom jeans with the elastic waist? How could she be in high-heeled, thigh high boots when she knows she should be in Easy Spirits? This is even more of an abomination than her performance in “Swept Away.”

Doesn’t she know that woman over 35, let alone 40 in this country, are considered older than Methuselah? You mean she has no clue that she should be referring to herself as “long in the tooth” “an old bag” and a “has-been.” Doesn’t she realize that she has to grow into her date of birth by talking about things she can’t do anymore? Where is her rheumatoid arthritis? COPD? High cholesterol? She should be punished for doing a jumping jack.

Just check the reaction to her performance on social media outlets if you think I am exaggerating.

It is amazing that in 2012, with the way racism and homophobia have been addressed – and rightfully so – that ageism rage against woman is on perpetual mute. Hello, media, I’m talking to you, too.

Let’s substitute Mick Jagger for Madonna at the same age doing the same moves. There would barely be a mention of his cumulative years. I remember when he was 53 and it was a blip, if that. Jagger is now approaching 70, and when he announces a new music project it’s applauded. Harrison Ford (69), George Clooney (51), Denzel Washington (56), Brad Pitt (48) are revered, immortalized and sought after for tons of opportunities without hesitation as to how their crow’s feet or beer bellies may look on the big screen. Regis Philbin got the “Millionaire” gig at almost 70.

TV executives would run over their Bishons before they would hand a new hosting gig to a talented woman in a similar age bracket. Please spare me that Meryl Streep or Helen Mirren still work. That’s because producers know these ladies can deliver no matter what crappy script they are handed. Betty White is getting a little attention now, and that’s because she is making fun of herself.

I wish I had a nickel for every time someone mentioned how old Jennifer Grey was when she appeared on “Dancing with the Stars.” When Susan Lucci wrote her autobiography last year every interviewer wanted to focus on her age and why she didn’t mention hot flashes in her book.

The realm of politics is no better. Hillary Clinton’s age is highlighted constantly as to how she would be too old if she were to to run for President, yet John McCain was how old and could barely communicate – I rest my case (this has nothing to do with who I would vote for).

This cuts across, race, income bracket and political persuasions. I thought liberal Democrats were suppose to be so open, so unwilling to judge. Ha! I have never seen so much judgment since my last family gathering. As for conservative Republicans, don’t be so full of yourselves. You’re just as bad. This isn’t a bi-partisan problem. This is a life problem.

We need to stop taking someone’s age and putting them in categories based on physical and emotional expectations. Everyone has different experiences, lifestyles, choices and genetics.

These judgments are printed and said out loud, and then they seep into people’s minds and become embedded in society. It halts opportunities and, let’s be realistic, at the rate we’re all going, our work years are increasing and we need to be open to all age brackets of people working and not just the twenty something crowd. There is no true price for good experience, no matter what the profession.

Similar to the opinions of Madonna on a more miniscule level, you will either like or dislike this article depending on what your mindset is. However, if I can get you to take a moment to think about your daughter, niece, mother or grandmother and think about the injustices, then I have communicated effectively. “Like a Prayer,” I hope things at the very least change for our girls who growing up now.

A few years ago when the first “Real Housewives” show on Bravo surfaced quicker than pictures of Anthony Wiener in his BVDs, the locale of the show was Orange County California, which, although is a serene and aesthetically beautiful area south of Los Angeles, it just didn’t entice me as a New Yorker to follow all of these blonde, botoxed women. Fast forward a couple of years later and New Jersey was the selected state, specifically Northern New Jersey, which is quite different culturally than South Jersey. Having spent an enormous amount of time in Northern New Jersey and being related to housewives of that area, I was curious to see where the line between fact and a good plot line would be drawn. After the first two seasons, what I found was the equivalent of eating a box of Entenmann’s chocolate frosted donuts 10:00 at night: it tastes good abut you feel completely toxic the next day.

There seems to be a cast type of the main characters for all of these “Housewives” shows: the not-so-bright but good hearted one, the bossy one, the one your a little jealous of, the lost one, and of course, the villain. On the New Jersey saga, the one who I thought was a little bit lost was Dina Manzo because it was hard to tell what she was searching for in life and was constantly seeking peace with teas, gems, and a spiritualist who became her BFF. Dina could not take the bad energy of the villain so she left mid-season, as did the villain Danielle Staub, who is now seeking treatment in stripper rehab after a three day gyration binge at Scores… I wish I was kidding.

As I awaited the new season of “RHONJ,” I was eager to see the prior Jerseyites who are Caroline–the bossy one, Jacqueline–the one I’m a little jealous of because no matter how many degrees are on my wall, my lifestyle is nowhere near what her’s is, and Teresa–the not so bright one, as evidenced by her malapropisms, but appears to be sweet and happy no matter what the circumstances are.

In between last season and the current season, it was made public that Teresa and her husband Joe Guidice were in bankruptcy and the opulent lifestyle that they flaunted on the show was really owned by Bank of America. The Guidice’s publicly stated that everything was great and they were victims of the economy. Unfortunately, I have seen this way too many times where the blame is put on everything from the dot.com bubble burst of 2000 to the recall of Skippy Peanut Butter and not people accepting what their actual net income is, also referred to as living in denial. We had also witnessed Teresa’s Italian temper–as she called it–in the famous table flipping episode in Season 1, which has been replayed more times than Lindsey Lohan walking into a court.

With all these intentional characters in place going about their business as if there were no cameras, even though anyone that has done any filming for TV knows there has to be crew to produce TV-quality work, I was very uneasy watching this season because the behavior now passed splurging on junk food and crossed over to sexism, violence, and ageism.

Lets start with violence. Two new characters brought in are related to Teresa: her bother Joe Gorga and his wife Melissa, and her cousin Kathy Wakile and her husband Rich, who looks like Robert DeNiro as Sam Rothstein in the last scene of the movie “Casino.” Melissa has now replaced Teresa as the not so bright one, Kathy is the lost one and Teresa has now become the villain. There is clearly jealousy and tension between brother and sister and at the Christening which they all kept exclaiming was so sacred, there was quite a bit of boozing. Having been to numerous Christenings, I do not recall people doing shots like it was a bachelor party. A few scenes later after gossiping about each other and spearing the stink eye across the room, Teresa went over to congratulate her brother and his wife, which only agitated her brother to the point of him slamming the table like a neanderthal and ordering his sister to get away from him. As more back and forth power struggles ensued, what happened next was really revolting: Joe Gorga became enraged like someone spilled drambuie on his Adidas track suit as the venue was filled with children of all ages, playing or in strollers. Then a brawl broke out that you would expect from The Situation of the “Jersey Shore,” except it wasn’t in a dive bar but in front of all these kids dressed in their Church clothes. In addition, to watch a sister flinch because she is afraid her brother is going to take a swing is abusive and is not what I consider to be a little brain candy.

The next scene after the dust up, which I am sure every catering hall owner looks forward to, Teresa and her husband Joe are outside and husband Joe tells her to “shut up,” which is separate from the condescending tone with which he normally speaks to her. Really Joe? “Shut up,” on TV? Nice. Do you speak to your Mother that way or just your wife? I am sure if someone spoke to any one of your four daughters like that, you would want to take care of business. While I am on my sexism tirade, we could use a little less of Joe Gorga constantly wanting to maul his wife and expressing the fact that part of her job is to take care of him. We get it, Joe Pesci, noodles and nookie.

Next, ageism came from Teresa. One nemesis, Kim G., is a reality show star wanna-be who has it in for Teresa, now that Danielle is gone. Teresa has stated that Kim G. is elderly. At an event where Kim G. was a few tables from her and was no doubt talking about Teresa, Teresa again made another old lady reference about Kim G. until Caroline told her to pipe down; Kim G. is about four years older than Caroline, who is in her late 40’s. Everyone has a different definition of what is considered, old but I think elderly is pretty well defined as at least 80 and above. Really, Teresa, its so derogatory when you demean another woman that way, whether you like her or not, and it will come back to bite you in the backside someday.

One would hope that a reality show depicting housewives and their families who are all parents to mostly underage children would be better behaved and more mature than their kids but its not, which only means that this particular show will be duplicated many times over as long as there is money to be made, lives to be humiliated, and audiences who will eat it up no matter what discriminatory behavior is aired.

Upon reading “Would Sam Kinison Have Survived in Today’s Brave New PC World?”, as a stand-up comedian myself, I felt the need to opine on what was a very insightful question. Sam Kinison was a genius for his time and theoretically still is. The Pentecostal preacher-turned-comedian took a would-be sermon and used his thunderous delivery, vendi-quadruple espresso shot-energy and viewpoint of the obvious to pontificate some of the funniest bits that the 80’s and very early 90’s had ever heard. While his peers, comprised of Jerry Seinfeld, Paul Reiser, and Rosanne Barr, were humorously talking about not pulling the tag off the mattress, catching tuna and not dolphins, and refusing to vacuum until Sears made one you could ride, Sam’s mind worked on other angles that today would have put him on a Hate List somewhere between Sarah Palin and Pat Boone.

His great bit about world hunger, that there would be no world hunger if starving Africans “lived where the food is and not in the desert where nothing grows,” in 2010 would have been construed as anti-Muslim, since Muslims live in the desert. Sam likely would’ve been exiled like Jyllands-Posten, the Danish cartoonists. Then there’s Kinison’s rapper bit which would have no doubt caused Kayne West to tweet “Sam Kinison hates black people” and then bag out on some a previous commitment ala the Today Show. Kinison’s bit on Rock Hudson was spewed not with malice but with a mix of commentary about a screen idol keeping one of Hollywood’s biggest secrets and how heterosexual men may view a gay sexual experience. That bit today would have created blogs upon websites blaring on how Sam is a homophobe and one of the causes of bullying.

Clearly Sam was not without his well-documented personal problems and had many demons he struggled with, but his comedy was straightforward, poignant and his subject matter was that of what many people where thinking about with their inside voice, all of which are the elements of being one of the greatest comics of your time.

I think Sam Kinison certainly would have been a working comic today. However, I do not think he would have had nearly the impact or fame that he experienced during his short life. He would have found his audience and hence a following across the country, but I truly believe the entertainment industry would have not wanted to touch him for the fear of a PC Police backlash. I can’t imagine a Comedy Central or even a HBO that today would have given a one hour special to a stand-up who would exclaim, “If you can’t make it in this country, you can’t make it anywhere. This is the greatest country in the world.” Especially if that proclamation is followed a hysterical shooting the homeless bit.

I’m glad Sam lived in the era he did so we’re now able to reap the benefits of his brilliance. But what a great show it would have been to see Sam go at it with Bill Maher, if that ever could have been a reality.

Thanks for the laughs Sam, I’m glad you brought them when you did.

A couple of weeks ago, a Facebook group called “Against Jennifer Lopez Performing in Occupied Cyprus” came to my attention. Being a Greek-American and half Cypriot, I immediately investigated and found out that Ms. Lopez was scheduled to perform in Cyprus on July 24th, as part of the opening of the Cartos Premium Hotel and in celebration of her 41st birthday. The uproar was due to the fact that the event was not an ordinary concert at some new 5-star hotel at a Mediterranean resort, it was a hotel that is located in the town of Kyrenia, which is one of the many towns occupied unlawfully by the Turks.

Why would this be so personal? Because my Grandparents are from Kyrenia and their land was unlawfully taken away from them during the Turkish occupation of Cyprus in 1974. Even though they had to come to the United States many years prior and became American citizens (like they use to do back in the day), there is no recourse for them to claim what is rightfully theirs. In brief, the Turks invaded the northern half of Cyprus, brutalizing its citizens and evicting 180,000 Greek Cypriots from their homes as Turkish Forces settled the Turks into the properties of those displaced Greeks.

The events were a violation of the Geneva Convention and various UN resolutions. In 1983, Turkish Cypriots proclaimed the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus which is recognized only by Turkey. So when I read about J. Lo’s concert it affected me as well as many others of Greek heritage.

Believe me, I get it, if you are blessed enough to have a high profile career like Ms. Lopez, people will pay $3 million dollars for an evening in your presence. God Bless you that is your path, but no matter what amount of money or accolades you will attain from the experience, one really must know who they are breaking bread with. I was not hopeful all the website groups and the subsequent emails to Ms. Lopez’s and her agents would have an affect because I, for one, did not think they would even be aware of the severity of that island’s history. Additionally, for someone who does not have a vested interest, who cares? — it’s one night, you fly in on a private jet, you belt out 8 songs, you are fed well, photographed, put up in a beautiful suite and then flown out on a private jet the next day. So I was shocked when I read a few days ago that Ms. Lopez withdrew from her commitment with the Cartos Hotel and made the following statement:

“Jennifer Lopez would never knowingly support any state, country, institution or regime that was associated with any form of human rights abuse, after a full review of the relevant circumstances in Cyprus, it was the decision of her advisors to withdraw from the appearance. This was a team decision that reflects our sensitivity to the political realities of the region.”

Jennifer please allow me to say “Euxaristo Para Poli”—which is thank you very much in Greek. I was so impressed that you took a stance and you and your people took the time to investigate the situation.

Unfortunately, in the litigious world that we live in, Ms. Lopez has been threatened with a $35-$40 million lawsuit for reneging on her obligation. I wouldn’t expect anything else from full-fledged thieves. In the end it will cost her at the very least legal fees, but she made the right decision this time — not taking blood money and doing what was morally and ethically correct.

It’s very much appreciated J.Lo, and a tray of homemade baklava is on me!

This Memorial Day, comedian Sarah Silverman was a guest on “The View.” Sarah has quite a large following, as well as a new book she’s promoting, and after catapulting into the scene over the last few years with her television show, movies, magazine articles, and online viral successes, she’s very well liked by many television hosts. Silverman’s certainly made it, she’s a success, and good for her. So with all that she has to be grateful for, what would possess her to put an audience filled with military personnel in for New York City’s Fleet Week on the spot?

—–

After a warm introduction and resounding applause, Sarah jumps on the couch in the fashion that she usually does and was asked what she thought of the military audience. She stated that however you feel politically, these people are heroes, and at that moment I’m thinking that was a nice, appropriate, and classy thing to say. Then, as quick as you can hear Tipper Gore shutting the eco-friendly door on Al’s backside, the politics came out of nowhere. The next sentence she uttered was:

“Wouldn’t this be a great opportunity to ask you guys about ‘don’t ask don’t tell’….to me, it was like a stepping stone to equal rights…now its like a silly relic.”

Did Sarah have a moment where she thought she was headlining at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles? Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar immediately jumped in to inform her that military personnel are required to refrain from speaking publicly about political issues and therefore cannot and will not answer. And note the wild applause from the audience for Elisabeth Hasselbeck after she states:

“We’re not gonna ask. And they’re not gonna tell.”

Then, instead of acknowledging what was just said to her the moment before and dropping the subject as was intimated, she continued on to say:

“These are people who are at a show featuring the women of “The View,” me, and the kid from “Glee.” So we don’t have to ask. I think we know.”

Note the lack of applause for that statement.

I wondered if Bob Hope was spinning in his grave. The camera panned the audience a few times and you can see from the look on these brave men and women’s faces that they were uncomfortable and caught off guard. Now whether Sarah ran her provocative question by the producers beforehand is not known. Regardless of whether she had clearance or not, her behavior was inappropriate at best. However you feel politically, many comedians like to bring up topics for shock value, but Comedy 101 is knowing your audience.

Being part of the military is also about being regimented, respectful and loyal. Regardless of how any of these soldiers feel on the inside, “The View” was clearly not the place for a discussion of this nature with these brave men and women.

Sarah Silverman will continue to have a great career. Humor is subjective and she knows what a certain segment of the population wants. But if she is ever in the presences of anyone in the military again, may I suggest that next time she start with thanking them for their heroism and leave it at that.

The first time I ever heard of the name Kardashian was in June of 1994 after the famous O.J. car chase. Robert Kardashian publicly read a letter written by O.J., which sparked off the beginning of one of the biggest media circus’ in American history. Kardashian became part of the “dream team” that allowed O.J. to walk free, although in Al Capone style, eventually end up in jail for a crime completely unrelated to the murders he committed. What I distinctly remember was that Kardashian was the man seen carrying Simpson’s garment bag the day Simpson flew back from Chicago. It was speculated that the bag may have contained Simpson’s bloody clothes and/or the murder weapon; however, by the time the bag was returned to the prosecutors, mysteriously, there was nothing incriminating.

A few years ago the Kardashian name cropped up again (Robert had passed in 2003). However, this time, the spotlight was on one of his four children, Kim, an attractive, petite, Armenian looking woman, who was part of the Hilton sisters’ crowd. The next thing I know there is a show on E! about the whole clan which includes Kim, her sisters Khloe and Kourtney, her brother Robert Jr. and her half-sisters who are in their early teens, Kylie and Kendall. The parents, and I use the term loosely, are Kris Jenner, who divorced Robert Sr. in 1989, and Bruce Jenner, a gold medal Olympic winner and an integral part of American sports history. Does this sound even remotely interesting? Well, if you said “no,” you are probably in the majority. However, if you said “yes,” you are in luck because they are on their fourth show in two years.

To summarize the lives of these people, the older girls own a few clothing stores in LA and Miami, although other than holding up some tops and cooing over how cute they are, I have never seen them engage in an actual transaction, though they did reprimand an employee for coming in late once. They also get paid for appearances (they call this “work”), put their names on perfumes that they have professed to have mixed in the lab themselves like Madam Curie, and eat out a lot. Mother Kris is the manager of these girls and tries to farm them out like Lynne Spears and Dina Lohan combined. She refers to lunch at the Ivy as “meetings.” They all speak in monotone voices and often use the words “like,” “issue,” and “stuff”. What I do find admirable is that when they are faced with any romantic crisis, they stay in bed for one whole day, but lo and behold, by the next day they are all primped and ready to go declaring that they are “over it and have moved on.” Now, that, needs to be bottled and sold to women across America.

One of the saddest parts of the show is Bruce Jenner. His post-athlete occupation is that of a motivational speaker and he has been seen coming home with a briefcase. In one perplexing episode he asks Kris for money, complaining that she doesn’t even give him enough of an allowance to buy his morning coffee. What was even stranger was that there was a shiny red Keurig coffee maker right in back of him as he was begging like a homeless person.

The way the older girls speak to their mother is a bit disturbing. I am sure when your mother is your manager there is a different dynamic to the relationship, but at times it seems a little over the line. Khloe likes to push her Mother’s buttons by talking to her using foul — and I mean foul – language. Or, if they’re annoyed with her, they ignore her phone calls when she has been trying to get in touch with them to book their next gig. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

As far as the two teenage girls Kyle and Kendall, it does not look like a great environment for these young ladies since there is no filter as to what they hear and see. In another episode, Kris had been putting herbal Viagra into Bruce’s coffee (she made it in the Keurig) which could have easily have knocked off Bruce for good, but instead had them locked up in their bedroom every morning. The younger ones were clearly aware that their parents were not gathering their tax documentation and patiently waited for them to emerge so they could start their day. Time will tell on that one.

Then there are the personal lives of the older girls. Kim has been in an on-again/off-again relationship with Reggie Bush of the New Orleans Saints, which seems to be on-again just like her daily manicures and shipments of free Prada pocketbooks. Kourtney is known for having gotten pregnant with her ex-boyfriend Scott, they are trying to make a go of their relationship but I think they need to start by finding out what this guy; who wears his Ralph Lauren sweaters tied around his shoulders preppy-style, does for a living. Khloe was on every magazine cover this past fall for her wedding to Lamar Odom of the L.A. Lakers, who she had known for five weeks prior to their wedding day. I must say by all accounts, Lamar seems like a stand-up guy, but Khloe honey, please, stop saying you are going to spend the rest of your life with him–that’s the Hollywood kiss of death.

Overall this is not a show based on any kind of morality; it’s more about living in the moment and dealing with the consequences at another time. They say they are like any other family which is true, if you believe in reality shows and unicorns.

I think that Charlie Sheen, the uber-talented actor — as he’s described by many in Hollywood — who leaped on to the scene as an money-hungry, woman carousing, cocktail drinking young lad in the movie Wall Street and then went on be one of the highest paid sitcom stars today portraying a millionaire (fast-forward to money earned), woman carousing, cocktail drinking older lad, has been given a lifetime pass of deplorable behavior that boggles my mind every time I see his updated mug shot. Being a sitcom star used to require a certain amount of decorum. Most stars tried to keep the arrests down to minimum. Can you imagine if Bill Cosby, Tony Danza, Henry Winkler or my favorite Ed O’Neill, had the kind of rap sheet that Carlos Irwin Estevez has? I guarantee that they would have never been hired.

In 2000, when Michael J. Fox was forced to depart from the sitcom “Spin City,” his replacement was Charlie Sheen. I remember thinking to myself, Charlie Sheen in a sitcom? Since when is he even remotely funny, and wasn’t he arrested for breaking his girlfriend’s nose — not to mention a spending spree at Heidi Fleiss’ house, shooting Kelly Preston in the arm, and trips in and out of rehab for hard drugs and alcohol?

Forgetting the moral issues for a second — although alcohol and prostitutes are in a little bit of a different category than punching your fiancee in the face — doesn’t someone like this pose a financial risk since Hollywood, like any other business, revolves itself around gross income?

Then in 2003, the epitome of “We Don’t Care About No Stinkin Laws” happened when Charlie was given his own sitcom that has now gone into syndication, which in Charlie’s money-terms means, prostitutes all day all the time! In the between all of this, he married and had two kids with actress Denise Richards — and we all know how that ended. I will spare Denise just a little bit. I really don’t think at the end of the day she had thought that being married to him was going to be her own version of Wild Things. But my goodness, his dirty laundry is public record so the “I am a girl from the Midwest” line just doesn’t cut it.

Denise’s divorce deposition was a laundry list of physical and emotional abuse, as well as gambling and child pornography. Even if a tenth of what she said was true, do we really want this man as a part of the few sitcom choices we have these days? I’m around a lot of stand-up comedy. You can walk into any of the major New York City comedy clubs and find comics who are very funny, original, talented, have paid their dues twenty-fold and that can do a better job and not be such a liability to a network and society.

So why does Hollywood keep rewarding this man? Every instance of this man being with a woman ends up with him in court and an endless amount of restraining orders. Some may think the women aren’t very bright but there is a pattern here whether you like Brooke Mueller or not. Furthermore, the majority of most jobs in the private sector would have had him fired before he could say “Hot Shots.” But for some reason he’s rarely unemployed.

What makes him carry on this inexcusable behavior—he is 44 years old, so the my parents didn’t pay attention to me excuse doesn’t hold water. If anything, his father—Martin Sheen—has been a huge proponent of his career and was the major connection that got him into films in the first place. He grew up in privileged Malibu, went to high school in Santa Monica and was friends with Sean Penn and Rob Lowe — although he was expelled and never graduated, which may have been the first clue.

Why bother writing this article? Because this man has one adult daughter and 4 children under the age of 6, and a brand new Christmas Day arrest. It sends waves of O.J. Simpson through the air and these stories usually have the same ending where one person is not on this earth anymore. If Charlie’s father, Martin—there isn’t a left wing liberal protest that I don’t like—Sheen, truly loves and cares about his son, he will get him as much professional help as possible and have him learn a trade. And the industry should take a stand and declare that this behavior—which is beyond tolerant — is not acceptable.

Message to all talent scouts: Spend a week going to Comedy Clubs and Improv shows in New York City. You’ll find his replacement and they will be grateful. No mess, just laughs, I assure you.

What in the world is wrong with people in the entertainment industry who come from humble beginnings, have a few years of real struggle and then with their uniqueness and by the grace of God (which you could interpret as luck), they make it big, as in rich and famous big. The chances of becoming as famous as Lindsay Lohan are 1 in 1,574,638 as tracked by E-Poll Market Research, but really, wouldn’t you rather be you?

Mr. David has been blessed beyond any struggling writer, producer, actor or stand-up comedian’s wildest dreams. His total cash receipts have still not been tallied since the funds continue to pour in from “Seinfeld,” but it’s accurate to say that with what he has earned to date, he could have paid for a lot of Nancy Pelosi’s botox.

Years after helping make television history, David jumped back into the small screen with the blessing of HBO and created “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” which — in line with him marching to the beat of his own drum — is done unscripted. The show has a very solid following as it is in its seventh season, which is three television lifetimes these days. Great Larry, Mazal Tov. Isn’t America grand? Bet you would only have had the career of Heidi from the Hills if you lived in Cuba.

So what would possess Larry to create a scene where he’s at a Catholic woman’s home and accidentally pees on a portrait of Jesus hanging in her bathroom (of all places)? I believe the motivator is pure and simple … an arrogant a sense of “I am a genius” entitlement because that’s what he’s been described as for two decades.

I’m a stand-up comedian and actress with a very high tolerance for humor. I’m also aware that comedy is subjective and what might be a falling-off-the-chair moment for one person can be an insomnia cure for another. However, I believe that Larry knew exactly what he was doing to get a reaction. It has now become vogue to take swipes at Christianity whenever possible. He could have picked anyone else to miss the toilet on and, by the way, for such a genius he used the lowest common denominator of humor: the bathroom and urinating — a fine improvisational moment if there ever was one.

Let’s put our imaginary hats on and think of what the outrage would have been if this had been done to say, Muhammad—yes, exactly, lawsuits a-flying, reparations, apologies, a lifetime supply of Starbucks!! How dare you!!! But using Jesus, the Lord and Savior to at least 65% of the United States population… eh, who cares, I have a show to do and a laugh to get.

I posted my disgust on Facebook and most people agreed. However, there are always those few who like to use freedom of speech as a replacement for freedom of being a complete jerk. One person I was arguing said, “Why don’t you stop complaining and do something, write or call HBO?” I hate to admit this lefty had a point, but he did, so I called HBO. It took 15 minutes to get the number and an actual person on the line, who I told in a very nice way (I toned down my New Yorkness) that I was a stand-up comic open to all types of humor, but as a Christian I was insulted and found it very disrespectful. As I was speaking she let out a sigh, a big fat sigh, she then said she would make a note of it, though she did not ask my name, email — nothing!

So I guess I have to turn to the only recourse I have and cancel HBO.

I watched Whitney Houston’s interview on Oprah and I did not have to wait until it was over to feel great sadness. Whitney burst out in to the scene with her first album when she was 22 years old, with a powerful singing voice like no other — intense, energetic and the ability to hit a gamut of notes. Unlike Michael Jackson, she was not thrust on to the stage by an overbearing father or competing for the spotlight with her siblings. She was raised a Baptist and had a very deep spirituality that she always mentioned whether she was receiving a Grammy or in a magazine interview. So how did this woman who was esthetically flawless and had it all, wind up sitting on the couch smoking marijuana laced with cocaine for days on end.

I believe it was a few reasons. Firstly, she married the wrong man, Bobby Brown, we all knew that—yes, all of us who did not know her personally knew that he was trouble. He spoke like trouble, he acted like trouble and he got in trouble. They started their marriage with him already having three kids from two different women he wasn’t married to and had been known for his outrageous behavior. She stated that she took her vows very seriously, she truly loved him and he allowed her to bring out her fun and crazy side. I do believe she took her vows very seriously and truly loved him, this woman could have had any man on the planet, but the fun and crazy side I’m a little unclear on, bringing up my second point.

Whitney sang like no other woman of her time, she acted in movies, wore beautiful gowns and traveled all over the world—her life was fun and crazy. Life isn’t fun and crazy for the nurse making $12 per hour cleaning bedpans. I have a hard time reconciling such a privileged lifestyle with the feeling of suppression. Artists express themselves, that’s what they do and on the Whitney level, the world is your oyster. However, for Whitney, like Michael, it seems as if what they set out to do as artists becomes a detriment to their life as a whole. She made a very poignant statement in the interview when she said “I had the money, the fame, been all over and I was done.” I felt the rest of that sentenced should have been “It doesn’t buy you self-worth.”

Later on as Oprah was pushing for details of her marriage, she finally described a time when she had given him a birthday party and when they got home that evening he spit in her face. She even repeated it a few times almost, as if trying to keep telling herself it happened. Whether you are a fan of hers or not, hearing that disgusting behavior would have resonated. Whitney and Bobby have a daughter, Bobbi Kristina, and of course, she spoke about the effect it had on her daughter. She knew this was not the environment for any child but she couldn’t take care of herself, so clearly her daughter would suffer too.

She stayed with Bobby for 15 years and with the help of her Mother, her mentor Clive Davis and lots of rehab and prayer, she cleaned herself up. I think some of us, especially women, where disappointed with Whitney because she went from being such a lady to, dare I say, trash, although when you saw this erratic behavior, you could see there was something causing it all.

Unfortunately, even though she is healthier now, when she spoke there were times when her enunciation was slightly different, I could not help but think how much irreparable damage had been done from the alcohol and drug abuse. She looked beautiful but tired. Her daughter spoke as well and seemed wise beyond her years. It appeared that there were probably times she had to play the mother and Whitney was the daughter.

I am rooting for you Whitney, I hope you find a wonderful man that respects you, I hope that you only make music if you get joy out of entertaining others and I hope you find the peace in yourself, which is really when you have it all.
