EXCLUSIVE BOOK EXCERPT: ‘Still Standing: The Untold Story of My Fight Against Gossip, Hate, and Political Attacks’
by Carrie PrejeanExcerpt From: “Still Standing” — Chapter 6
The other girls began to react to what had transpired between Perez and me as soon as the lights went down. Miss Vermont later told FOX News, “A lot of people were shocked. We were all kind of giving each other those eyes. We couldn’t believe it.”
As soon as I got back to the tent behind the stage to change, someone shouted, “California, Access Hollywood wants to interview you.”
“Why me? I didn’t win.”
As I walked back and put my flowers down, I felt all eyes on me, which was strange because I wasn’t the winner, but there was this sort of buzz in the air, and it seemed to be buzzing around me. Part of it was that many of the house moms, who looked after the girls at the pageant, were coming up to me and whispering that I did the right thing in standing up for traditional marriage; they told me they were proud of me. I appreciated their kind words, but really my primary thought, after the letdown of losing, was to get out of this tight gown, take off all my makeup, eat a cheeseburger, and just go home and recover from the stress and strain of the last three weeks—weeks in which I had not seen my family, except in the audience. Prejean Attorney to Miss California USA Pageant Directors: Last Chance to Retract Defamatory Statements
by Carrie Prejean[Ed. note: The following letter was just released to Big Hollywood. Written by Carrie Prejean's lawyer, Charles S. LiMandri, it was sent today to Timothy F. Shields, Esq., the attorney representing Miss California USA Pageant co-directors Keith Lewis and Shana Moakler, and K2 Productions, Inc.]
RE: Carrie Prejean v. Keith Lewis, Shana Moakler, and K2 Productions, Inc.
Dear Mr. Shields:
We are writing in response to your letter of June 13, 2009. There have been multiple written communications from me to you since the date of that letter addressing these various issues in detail, and which we will not repeat at this time. Since your letter was released to the press, however, with the attachments, we feel it necessary to address some of the more egregious misrepresentations made in that letter.
1. There Was No Unauthorized Participation in Literary Works.
As you well know, both Keith Lewis and Donald Trump had given preliminary approval to Ms. Prejean to write a book. In fact, Mr. Trump’s office had circulated a draft amendment to her contract for that purpose at the time that she was terminated – - without warning and without just cause. She did not yet have a contract with a book publisher at the time she was terminated. She did have a contract with a literary publicist to find a publisher for the book, which was the source of the confusion about this issue. Without giving Ms. Prejean or me an opportunity to clarify the matter, she was abruptly terminated. The fact that she was working on a book was well known and was discussed multiple times, both verbally and in writing. Obviously, the book had not yet been published, and there can be no material breach of contract at issue here. Therefore, the reason given for her termination as being based in part upon her doing a book deal is a complete and utter pretext. (more…)
Carrie Prejean Kept Out of Special Olympics Ceremonies by Miss California Pageant Director
by Carrie PrejeanI have volunteered at the Special Olympics for the past several years; it is a cause very close to my heart. I was so excited to be invited as an honored guest and presenter of medals at the Special Olympics summer games this June. I fully intended to go and volunteer once again in my private capacity. However, when I learned that Keith Lewis had called the event asking that a new Miss California USA attend in my place, I reluctantly decided for the good of the Olympians I should not be there at this time. The Special Olympics should be all about these amazing athletes. I hope the generous people of California volunteer, cheer, and donate this weekend in Long Beach. I thank the Special Olympics for their ongoing support and I promise them and the athletes: I look forward to volunteering with them soon. (more…)
Big Hollywood Exclusive: Prejean Attorney: Pageant Head ‘Bordering on Slander.’
by Carrie PrejeanStatement from Charles LiMandri, attorney for Miss Carrie Prejean:
“What Keith Lewis is doing is bordering on slander. He says he wants to move on but he keeps attacking Carrie, attacking me, attacking even Carrie’s pastor. Is Keith Lewis begging for a lawsuit? Does he want to take the facts, as we have them, to a jury of Carrie Prejean’s peers? I can’t speak for Carrie, who is a lovely and gracious as well as strong woman who will have her own ideas, but as for me I say: I’m a board certified trial attorney with 26 years experience. I would love to take Keith Lewis on in a court of law with the facts as I know them to be. Knock it off, Keith and start acting like a grownup who puts common decency–not to mention business interests– ahead of petty political grudges and attack machines.” (more…)
Big Hollywood Exclusive: Miss California Speaks Out After Pageant Firing
by Carrie PrejeanLet me begin by saying I treasure the opportunity I’ve had to represent the great State of California, and I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the thousands of Californians, and other Americans, I have met and who have stood with me through this controversial firestorm. One of the many enduring things about being Miss California USA was the opportunity to get to meet and know so many wonderful people. I would not be the strong, courageous woman I am today without your support, and prayers.
I would like to thank Mr. Donald Trump and his organization for his support and defending me through the most challenging time of my life. I am so grateful for him, and the opportunity I’ve had to get to know him. I admire, and respect him. I wish Tami Farrell the best; I know she will do a great job.
I hope Americans watching this story unfold, take away the most important lesson I have learned through all of this: nothing is more important than standing up for what you believe in, no matter what the cost may be. I’ve done my best under the difficult circumstances to handle the vicious attacks with integrity and show respect to others, even those who don’t agree with me. (more…)
Exclusive: Prejean Atty. Fires Back: Miss California Pageant Head ‘Cannot Deny Truth’
by Carrie PrejeanCharles LiMandri, Attorney for Miss Carrie Prejean, issued the following statement in response to Keith Lewis’ comments on The Today Show earlier today:
“Keith Lewis cannot deny the truth: He did not bother to pick up the phone and tell Carrie Prejean before he alerted the media. He did not pick up the phone and call me to let me know she was fired either. Both of us learned about it from media reports. He claims he wants to “move on” yet he continues to attack not only me, Carrie and even Carrie’s pastor, Miles McPherson. This tells you everything you need to know about Keith Lewis and the way the pageant has treated Carrie from day one.” (more…)
Exclusive: Prejean Attorney Strikes Back: Carrie Has Fulfilled her Pageant Obligations
by Carrie PrejeanI am in shock that K2 Productions and the Miss California USA Pageant have taken the steps to fire Carrie Prejean today. The claim that she has an unauthorized book contract is false. She does not. The claim that she is refusing to appear is false. Carrie has been in constant contact with pageant officials seeking to fulfill her obligations. I have emails in my possession tied to the pageant organization as recently as last Friday citing future appearance requests for Carrie. She represented the Pageant in Las Vegas the weekend before last, and is scheduled to appear at a Special Olympics event this weekend in California, a cause dear to her heart. Everyone has been pleased with her appearances and excited to see her. (more…)
