Real Racism: Lessons in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’
by Andrea Shea KingMy name is Bob Ewell. We’re all Bob Ewells if you check with the Left and their media mouthpieces.
Who is Bob Ewell? Well, if you’ve ever watched the movie To Kill a Mockingbird, you’d know that Ewell is the racist character who destroyed the life of an innocent man.
To Kill A Mockingbird is a classic American film, based on Harper Lee’s novel of life in 1936 Alabama and racial injustice that resided there.
The importance of this movie is that the cries of racism today, most recently by former president Jimmy Carter — which are not true — damage and set back the real cases of racism. This movie shows us real racism, which thankfully, we don’t see much of today. Jimmy Carter is screeching that we’re racist, that we don’t think Obama is qualified because he’s Black.
Watch To Kill a Mockingbird and see for yourself.
Now, Carter would know something about being unqualified, wouldn’t he? Arguably the most unqualified president in modern history, what’s his excuse? Last time I checked, his skin is pasty white.
The contrast is glaring between this made up political racism and the real deal — the real Bob Ewells of the world.

Great point Andrea we need to show this movie to all that use racism as a toy. If they don't get the point the first time then keep on showing it to them, even if it takes 187 times.
Thank you, Andrea, Nice writeup, and thanks for the free link. You know, Andrea, in may ways I don't want rank Lefties to stop it all. I want it to get worse. The more they do it the more they tank with the American public, and the better chance there is that the American Left will never attain significant political power in this country again.
That's worth being called a racist a million times over. Revel in it
Right now I'm watching "The Great White Hope" with James Earl Jones on Turner Classics. So far this is the greatest movie on race that i've ever seen.
One of the best movies of all time in my opinion. The sheriff was a good man : "Bob Ewell fell on his knife" .
who is the REAL racist? Some seem to think that only whites can be racist. The REAL racists are appearing more and more in all colors.
now if only those on the left who continue to scream "racism" rather than take 5 minutes and actually TALK to the citizens who took part in the tea party….we MIGHT be able to begin a real dialogue
Not to diminish your point Andrea, but does anyone really even care what Jimmy Carter thinks?
Carter obviously does. Maybe he's the only one.
Jimmy Carter is the lowest of traitors of the office of the Presidency. He has never forgiven us for throwing his incompetent butt out of the White House. He is a narcissistic ego maniac just like Obama the man he is trying to save. Here we have two of the worst incompetents to sit in the White House and because one happens to be half white they are throwing out the race card. This is the MO of the democrats, when all else fails , call everyone a racist and play the victim of the big bad white culture. Carter is an old time redneck cracker and a well known anti-semite. He supports every terrorist organization and if the media was doing their job Carter would be signing head shots at his library. No matter how desperate these leftist malcontents get and no matter that they called more then half this country racist because we protest his Messiah's programs, this is the last act of desperate people who are themselves the real racist. This is all beginning to fall apart and like a retreating army with a scorched earth policy the Godless leftist cult of malcontents will try to pass every leftist wet dream they every fantasized about. They plan is to damage this country beyond repair. Carter, Obama and the entire democratic party are all Bob Ewells running around and using the only word in their entire vocabulary. It doesn't matter, because we are exercising our God given right of free speech and the truth will set us all free of this complete incompetent that sits in the White House. The sooner we throw this bum out of office like we did to Carter the better America will be.
"does anyone really even care what Jimmy Carter thinks?"
Yes. The people who always care about "useful idiots."
wow! how did i get here? some of you really know your jimmy carter facts. carter has been let of the hook b/c bush will soon take over as the worst president in our history. hey dan marino, do you fall back on your morality if all else fails? not all leftists are Godless and malcontent. i hope the truth sets you free brother marino. are you racist? (…old time redneck cracker…) free speech is in no way shape or form a God given right. the ability to speak, maybe. are you republican, and if so are all of "you" egocentric and angry?
palin, joe the plumber, mitch "poopmouth" mcconnel, really. is this the future? the election was lost b/c sarah palin was put on the ticket. plain and simple! no reverse racism, no acorn conspiracy, no black power, no voter fraud, no hanging chad, blah blah blah! after 8 years of bush's ignorance and stupidity america was ready for a change. unfortunately the republican "MO" has become to point fingers and shun accountability when the going gets tough. slightly unconservative don't you think? ronald reagan would be disappointed.
was thomas jefferson racist, Godless, or malcontent?

"free speech is in no way shape or form a God given right"
Do you realize what you just said, and how liberals would react if Bush said it at any time in his presidency?
Oh, right, free speech is only for those with "correct" thoughts–anyone who may differ on the correctness of those thoughts is, ipso facto, racist.
Sorry, I mean "raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-cissssst!!!1!1!!!eleven!"
Best book/movie EVER. Another good one on the same line is A time to Kill by John Grisham..Of course Grisham is a major liberal but he still writes some darn good books.
Why is speech in no way shape or form a God given right? Please explain.
"Stand up, child. Your father is passing."
Bwahaaahaaa! Are you nutz! obama is ALREADY the worst president EVER he knocked carter off the podium in his first 3 months! Here's a dollar, go buy yourself a clue.
BTW lefty, how does it feel to be an ACORN/obama shill? ____Ugh, why do the admins have "flood control" turned on for posting?
Good column.
Whenever Jimmy Carter speaks, it always feels like a desperate attempt from someone who is trying to be relevant.

The young generation is fairly sick of racists and in fact the whole racism guilt trip and racism debate. We can't even decide whether we're going to be socialist or capitalist, whether or not to adhere to the constitution, and Newsweek is attempting to tell us that white babies are born racist?? I tune these moral blowhards out. Rush Limbaugh is doing more for race relations right now than anyone since Martin Luther King Jr.
I was thinking "Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."
Oh I do not know if we do not see racism on par with the situation in TKAM anymore. The thing that has changed is that racism is now an equal opportunity offense and some think they have a corner on the market of accusation… even false accusation without obligation of proof or reason.
i didn't mean to take away focus from a literary masterpiece. i'm not liberal. i'm not atheist. i'm damn sure not racist. maybe i'm splitting hairs but freedom of speech and "God given right to speak" are not the same. our constitution was not written by God.
I confess…I tried re-reading it earlier this year. I enjoyed it as a kid but I just couldn't get very far into it as an adult.

187 times?? That would be murder!
Part One:
I raised my 4 children to judge by character – not by color. Worked, too, till the boys entered the service, and were exposed to blacks who were mirror immages of the worst steriotypes (sp) of blacks.
Iif we are to get rid of racism, the blacks have to meet us half-way. We can't eliminate racism by ourselves – and never will as long as blacks insist on having seperate "Black" cultural events such as Miss Black America (what if we had a Miss WHITE America – I can hear the "racist" screams, now!); a Black TV channel; (this is an example of de-segregation? If so, I want a White only channel!); and other examples too numerous to mention.
I grew up in the segregated south – never knew a black person to talk to until about 1970..then met and worked with a wonderfully blunt girl who declared – loud and clear, "I don't want anyone to give me ANYTHING! But at the same time, I don't want anyone telling me I can't do something just because I'm black!" I admired her! She was a hard worker, witty, and a good friend.
Part Two:
We – black and white – must let go of the past and concentrate on the future – and that includes teachiing the young blacks that education and plain speaking is THEIR future – not dropping out of school and mouthing slured ebonics! And, their peers who do so shouldn't be dennigrated – should not be called "Uncle Toms" – for doing so. Don't believe me? Look around at the succesful blacks – they are educated and talk plain English!
I spent some time in Memphis, and a friend said, "If you're not prejudiced when you move here, you will be when you leave!" After 50 years of de-segregration, this is a sad, sad comment.
That simple piece of advice has always escaped jimmah.
'Mockingbird' is a classic and there always seems to be something to learn from it
The Scarlet R has, once again, been unleashed by the tired, predictable and rather desperate left in America. Of course, everyone who opposes them is a "racist".
*yawn*
The gig is up, I think. Everyone is on to their insane little game, as in "Everybody Expects…the Liberal Inquisition!" at http://firebreathingchristian.wordpress.com/2009/...
Let's get this bad comedy act off the stage once and for all…
and failing, miserably……
It's always been there great last bastion of hope when ALL there other tactics fail…."The race card". They will use it till the end of times….and the thing about it…is that it always works. Many folks just fall for it. To many people allow there brains to be sucked in by the left. Also…No ONE!!! wants to… a) look like a racist (in defending these allegations) and b) being labeled such as one. So people don't stand up to the "LIES"!!! They stick there heads in the ground.
Jimmy Carter was not a nuclear physicist and wasn't even a nuclear engineer. He trained to be the engineering officer of a nuclear submarine under construction and he took (from what I remember) one class on nuclear reactors. What was called a nuclear engineer in the Navy back then would be more accurately described as a power plant operator. His greatest achievement in my opinion was that he graduated from Annapolis, no easy task. So yes, he is less unqualified than Obama and probably knows a hell of a lot more than Obama (Obama never ceases to amaze me in how little he knows), but your “anti-Semitic swine” description pretty much sums it up for me.
My response to the article seems to have been deemed unworthy of publication, but I'd just like to take this opportunity to say that I'm glad you're still doing what you're doing, Flynn. Every time you post you make conservatives look barking mad, and long may you continue to do so.
I had similar experiences in the military. It is also fact that, some of the black men and women, whom it was my distinct privilege to be associated with, were some of the finest human beings I have ever known. Conversely, the flip side of that was, shall I say, disgustingly confrontational, at times. My black Marine brothers and sisters were EXACTLY like that girl and they were BRUTAL to racist blacks. Much worse than I could have been if I was racist.
Yeah……Memphis was not very pretty in 76-77, either. Did 6 mos at NAS Memphis at Millington. It could be avoided but, it was there.
When are we going to have our "Edward R. Murrow" moment when someone confronts black racism in America? When are we going to hear the 'at long last, have you no shame?' comment on black racism? When are we going to have the White Paper on black racism? The Murrows, the Welches, the television stations, etc. all confronted the sins of white people – so when will someone please confront the sins of blacks?
Say, that looks like a young Joseph Sisko up top.
Ah Schffle… we are mad! I am glad you notice! We are also fed up with the leftist cult of malcontents. But that is OK because the cultist have been mad at us since the 1960s. You leftist love to dish it out and I can't figure out why you and others like you can't take it? The problem with cultist like yourself is that you can't stand the fact we conservatives racist, evil mongers, potential domestic terrorist, right wing rabid republicans even dare to speak up and have a different point of view than yours. Tell me scuffle, what is it like to be perfect and think that what you believe it the only way to think? Enlighten us all with your intelligence so we too may worship the Messiah and join the cult of the liberalism and hold hands so we can have goosebumps all over our pretty little bodies. Your old PAL FLYNN35
Do what I do. Whenever someone calls me a racist, I say, "Hell yeah, I'm a racist…I love NASCAR!" It always leaves them speechless.
'Cultists' rather than 'animals' these days, then? You're not going soft on me, are you?
As the saying goes, the problem with the silent majority is that they never shut up. You'll never be the oppressed victim that you so desperately want to be. If you wanted to speak up and have a different point of view to me, that'd be great, but that's not how you roll. Better to pretend that you're being oppressed and can't say what you've just said, right? If you haven't been allowed to say it, then you don't have to defend it, after all.
As for being perfect: yeah, it's a bit of a struggle. You just have to take it one day at a time.
This film would make a great "teachable moment" I fear it is to late however.
Truth doesn't count for the racist accuser; rather, it is appearance that matters. Calling someone racist is only intended to marginalize the accused. Perhaps Carter forgot his own racism during his 1970 gubernatorial campaign against Carl Sanders. During this contest, he instituted a smear campaign accusing Sanders of "associating with Blacks". His direct support of segregation in 1956 seems also to have been forgotten.
Carter, arguably one of the least qualified Presidents in this past century, if not in the history of the US, should practice the adage that "those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones".
I watched this movie in High School, it was excellent. My only minor quibble is with Carter being unqualified. No doubt he was an unmitigated disaster and rightly hailed as America’s worst president but the man was a nuclear physicist and from my understanding a somewhat successful peanut farmer. The man is an anti-Semitic swine but I make the point only because there is someone far more unqualified that has become president: Barrack Hussein Obama.
One thing I find amusing is reading and hearing the whining from liberal malcontents over Sarah Palin’s qualifications. Earth to liberal idiots [redundancy], Sarah Palin is more qualified than both Obama and Biden. Some dolt on another thread babbled how the R’s should be embarrassed for nominating Palin for VP. Give me a break, the donks nominated a guy [Joe “3 letter word: JOBS” Biden] who had to withdrawal from the 1988 presidential race for plagiarism. As far as Obama’s concerned the reality is he finds himself in the position he’s in because of the color of his skin and the deep guilt mentally ill liberals are infected with. The complete antithesis of what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr envisioned.
Satan – Carter was not a nuclear physicist. He was in the Naval Nuclear Power Program, as I was myself. The purpose of this program is to train officers and enlisted men to operate nuclear propulsion plants – there is some physics in the two year program, of course, as well as other technical subjects such as metalurgy, thermodynamics and water chemistry, but completion of the program does not entitle anyone (officer or enlisted) to call themselves a physicist (or even an engineer). Carter did complete the training, but (contrary to another popular misconception) he never served a day aboard a seagoing vessel.
Nobody is saying that everyone opposing the president on policy issues is a racist. But racism is a factor in the opposition. Look at the horrible signs the teabaggers carried last weekend. Listen to the hateful rhetoric that Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck spew out on a daily basis. When is someone in the Republican party or the conservative movement going to call out these nuts?
Well, from our side as the saying goes that loud mouth minority refuses to stay out of everyone's business. Neither am I or my fellow conservatives are oppressed victims, unless you consider that the big mouth minority are like barking dogs that will never shut up. The fact that I can say anything I want to you or to any… (I don't want you to think I am going soft) of you mad dog animals that just won't stop getting into our faces, our wallets, our homes, our cars everything we do you want to make a law. So what you and peers want is a dictatorship of the minority and if we respond you turn it all around as if we think we are victims. When in fact you come at us as victims and in your righteous indignation your going to fix this flawed America you feel you have the right to fix. You just don't want a backlash from the silent majority and if we dare to speak up to your righteous intentions we are big mouth and victims. The reason I have use the terms mad dog animals is because you can't reason with an animal. Its your way or the highway and that is your idea of free speech. What you leftist want is the so called silent majority to sit down, shut up and do what we are told and if we make a sound we are racist, victims and all the other adjectives the left is a master are creating.
If you and your ideology was perfect, you wouldn't have to struggle at it one day at a time. You would be perfect and there would be no debate. Then again animals can't reason and barking dogs never bite.
Hey Brother lefty, of course I am a racist, i was just made one by the Godfather Jimma Carter. The pillar of leftist malcontents. As for the truth brother lefty, i can't be a cracker, I'm a dagomick from Boston. However lefty, you wear the moniker of a lefty, if it walks like a leftist and talks like a leftist, hey 'guess what? You win a cookie! So you keep eating the Bush hating fried ice cream. I made my bones in the democratic party for years and years so I am just giving back to you lefties what I was taught years ago in the Kennedy machine. I know how to point fingers and we do nothing wrong ever, as a matter of fact we are so perfect and so are our ideas and who are you to even think of questioning us. The entire history of every democrat administration has been full of shun accountability, ignorance and stupidity and all you cultist of leftist can do is call us evil republicans who dare to use our God given right of of free speech.. Oops I forgot God didn't write the constitution nor did he vote! Our rights come from the generosity of the leftist statist only when the mood is right. Don't worry to much about us evil wight wingers, racist, evil monger racist because this orgasmic wet dream you are living through right now is all temporary. You leftist don't have the staying power to implement your insanity. Nov 2010 is approaching fast and we evil white and black conservative racist have a silent partner in ending this madness and his name is Barack Hussein Obama II, he is the gift that will keep on giving and giving because we can do what God can't do….. VOTE ! I hope this wasn't a RACIST statement? Well, I'm a Catholic so I can always go to confession and get the slate wiped clean.
you are correct in the assertion that the Constitution was not written by God, but the Founders defined the idea that man has rights given him by God, that may not be impinged upon by a government.
The 1st amendment therefore protects the "God given right to speak", except for yelling fire in a crowded theater, etc.
It is ironic that the party that was responsible for the 100 years of American Apartheid in the South, now uses that as an example of America's intrinsic evil and constantly brings it up on the world stage to damn our system of society. The Dems attitudes and actions in the modern day are essentially no different than those of Imperialists in the 19th century: the blacks can never succeed without the help of benevolent and superior white people. Welcome to the real neo-imperialist age.
Conservatives are always pilloried by "progressives" as hopelessly "simplistic" and prey to the error of "living in a Manichean world where everything is divided into black and white and good and evil." I have always thought that this criticism is evidence that the psychological traits of projection and transference are alive and well in most liberals. For the last thirty years (at least) the Left has ruthlessly divided the world into "victims" and "oppressors." Under this "simplistic" system no concession is too unreasonable to assuage the injury to victims and no amount of condemnation too much to heap on their erstwhile victimizers. A third class, the "victim advocate" acts like a collection of border collies, forever herding the helpless, mindless vicitms in a way their "advocates" want them to go. ACORN and professional "advocacy groups" are those who are chiefly responsible for keeping racism alive and well in the U.S. today. But there isn't anything really personal about it. As Don Corleone would have said, "It's just business."
Nice post, Jack. You would have been proud of me today. I was in Westwood, on my way to my writing class. Guess who I found handing out pamphlets in the street? Three members of the Communist Party USA. I kid you not. I gave them an earful. I asked if they had ever spent a day in a communist country. I asked them if they were so uneducated that they did not realize that communism was a tyranny responsible for millions of deaths and untold human misery. I told them that America would never be enslaved by communism, because we are a free people and we are willing to fight for our liberty. I told them the American people are waking up and we're going to throw the communists out of Washington. They ran away.
Don, Glenn,
My mistake. It's nice to know I gave him too much credit.
It comes down to something as simple as this, when you build your entire cause around "racial justice" even when you are selling plumbing parts, any opposition view is instantly racist to you.
They have let themselves become unhinged from the reality of what the situation really is anymore, and refuse to clam down and look around. The worst part is, many now are openly using race as a political weapon to smash their enemies. The worst, look at that woman from ACORN, does anyone seriously think she wouldn't scream racism when her people were caught? Her organization was built on the race baiting industry the left has created. They can't back away from it now,
to do so, would be to admit, they use racism charges like a jihadist uses a bomb belt, to the same effect.
Unfortunately for some, truth may hurt. Beck And Limbaugh speak the truth, but they are far from racists. Your comment about "teabaggers" makes it clear where you stand. Go back to watching MSNBC and let the nanny state continue to take care of you for another 3 1/2 years.
I always find it interesting when examples of "real racism" are drawn from works of fiction, which is what To Kill A Mockingbird is, after all. It's the fictional account of a false accusation of rape, something that occurs lots of time in real life (just ask the former members of the Duke University Lacrosse team). The idea that it's all about a white ignorant southerner's irrational hatred of all things black, as opposed to the idea that it's about some horny young woman's remorse about her father's discovery of her own sexual feelings, seems to fit some kind of narrative more than it fits the "facts" of the story. Which, after all, is a piece of fiction. I always thought the book was more revealing of Harper Lee's psyche than of anything else. Having grown up in the segregated south, I had a hard time recognizing much reality in her story, but I thought it was a ripping good yarn.
But then, my experiences among the yankees have been of a piece about race: They generally talk a good, self-righteous talk, but never, ever mix socially with black people. In the south, it was usually the opposite. Go figure. Perhaps it has to do with getting your facts from fictionalized accounts in the movies, and expecting us all to act like Bob Ewell. In the real south, the Ewells probably lived, worked and interacted daily with black people — like most poor southerners (like my own family) did, since they basically shared the same social status of grinding, working class poverty. People in Atticus Finch's social circle would only have dealt with black people as maids or "boys who did odd jobs." I wonder how that makes the Ewells the oppressors, and the Finches the "good people."
Ah, well, it's always safe for elitists to put down those ignorant white trash people, clinging to their guns and religion and prejudices. Yep, we no longer have Americans laughing heartily at Amos and Andy. Instead, we have white people cowering in fear when a car full of thugs blasting gangster rap drives by. Quite an improvement, eh?
"free speech is in no way shape or form a God given right" With this right here, you are an EPIC FAIL. Let me explain it to you: "We are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights, among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. The Bill of Rights was set down to make sure that the gov't knew what rights were GOD GIVEN and they were not allowed to touch except under limited circumstances. That includes FREEDOM OF SPEECH. See First Amendment.
Your public education has outed you as a complete and utter MORON.
I agree. It's a shame that racism is being used falsely so often now that people are going to start seeing it as "crying wolf". If there is a real problem with someone being a racist will anyone notice? I think those of us with brains to see beyond the false accusations will and I hope that is enough.
Another movie I would suggest, which shows racism on both side, In the Heat of the Night…..
Is this a sad but accurate description of NASCAR?
Racism now is nothing like the racism then. Racism has evolved. If you can't see that, you need to ask youself why you want to live in the past — when racism was more blatent. Carter was right!
Quite a series of bitter, vitriolic comments, here. Look through it and see how many times name-calling is used in a "discussion" (term used loosely). Things like "idiot", "cracker", "left-leaning", and even "conservative" and "liberal". Rather depressing, really. And, the folks writing those comments are complaining about another name-calling comment. Turn your attention inward.
Right on target. Thanks for stating it.
Believe it or not, some of us blacks are not examples of "black" stereotypical behavior. some white people live
in trailer parks, that have broke down cars, and meth labs, as common features. does that mean all whites are
trashy. get a grip folks. Stop letting bull crap affect your brain function. people are people. When the death tolls are
stated from the latest battle in the sand box, does it matter if a dead american is black ,white, red, yellow , or brown.
It is time for us all to wake up to reality and think about issues that really matter. Who gives a damn what Carter says anyway.
Folks, listen… Consider the source. Carter has no clue what it means to be a qualified president. He's grasping at the only thing he knows. And that, my friends, ain't much. Everyone who's up in arms about his comment forget one very important thing – he was probably the worst president we ever had. His relevance when he was president was near zero. His relevance now is even lower.
Wow, this is such a joke. So real racism is defined by the lynchings and dehumanization of minorities in the 19th century, but what we have today is merely alleged racism?? King, you are such a typical Republican. Racism is very much alive today. To ignore it is to condone it. When bigots like Rush Limbaugh become speakers for race relations, you KNOW we have a problem
Bravo Arnold! Whatever happened to all of us being Americans? Conservative, Liberal, black, white, and the slew of other labels we give each other are the real 'racism' in this country. Republicans are just as closed minded, entrenched, hateful, and denigrating as Democrats, at least in the extremes of either party. The rest of us, the ones who go to work, pay our bills, and struggle to raise families in this chaotic society we've created are left torn by having to decide which of the two evils we're faced with is the least damaging. We desperately need a viable, realistic third party whose platform is the People, all of us, and our needs (as opposed to trees, animals, and the slew of other useless causes most third parties embrace). Lets all come together, acknowledge our differences, identify our needs, resolve some solutions and make this country great again!
Jimmy Carter is a wise man. He knows what he is talking. He is always right.
Whatever racist leanings I may have been taught in the 50's and 60's are gone. Reading the book and viewing that awesome movie was a giant step forward for me. I believe one of the greatest harms to good race relationships is the carping by those who would stir the ashes of hate with constant reminders of past abuses. For God's sake, the fact our president was elected should be evidence enough that Americans have made huge progress toward the elimination of hatred based on color. Thank goodness Obama has said he understands that criticisms of his policies are not race-driven.
I can't recall ever seeing anyone bring guns to a presidential town hall.. If these comments show anything, it's that we have a lot of work to do in this country on issues of race.
On the political front, the two party system has to go. It polarizes are thought into sub-2 minute sound bytes that capture nothing of how people, parties, candidates, or idealogies actually think or work, both liberal and conservative media play into this. You cannot encapsulate complex issues into catch phrases and have a reasonable discourse. I know very few "true republicans" or "true democrats", and internal struggles within those parties cause as many election losses as cross party disputes. We need a truly multi-party solution that allows a fiscal conservative/social liberal, and social conservative/big government types, as well as the more hard line idealogies that will allow people to truly connect with their candidates, and force more complex consensus building dialogue in government rather than hurling sound bytes that have no meanting.
and finally, we need some kind of news outlet not driven by advertising and the pressure to condense complex issues into soundbytes, and that actually has real fact checking built into the system. I level this critique at both sides of the political aisle. Terms like "teabaggers" and "obamacare" do nothing to advance real dialogue. They serve to polarize and mobilize people who are not familiar with the real and very complex issues at stake. That turns dialogue into yelling, effigy burning, and other reprehensible acts like making pictures of Bush and Obama that look like Hitler.
I hope as a nation that we can be better than this.
Give me a break, you don't think racism exist in today's USA. Being the WHITE, white boys don't know what is racism, and how it still exists in today's USA. This is why you are not able to see the difference between the worst racism in shape of salivary and the hidden racism that exits in today USA.
The point is the Constitutions points out to Americans as we the people, not white or blacks or brown. Some of the whites do not want to read that part because human nature is to feel comfortable with one's own kind. I would not go the extent of Jimmy Carter, but given the kind of question raised in your right wing media, can you deny that some of the intolerance being shown in all the town hall meetings, right wing media and web site is because of the fact that they are racist.? Otherwise, why some of the right wingers still be questioning about Obama's citizenship.
There's more than one kind of racist, and Bob Ewell represented only one of them. What about the jurors who listened to the evidence that should have exonerated Tom, yet found him guilty? Perhaps they were just stupid, but more likely they found Tom guilty because of their prejudice. And there's a good chance that they wouldn't have recognized the true nature of their convictions either.
It's amazing how easily we cling to gross oversimplifications. Racism has myriad degrees, ranging from the Bob Ewells of the world to perfectly good people who will reflexively lock their car door when a black person walks by. Not everyone who opposes Obama is a racist, but there are certainly degrees of even subconscious racism in the vehemence of some of the opposition. Unfortunately, it seems to be those people who are getting all the press.
They try to call Sean Hannity a racist too or imply it. Do you guys ever listen to his radio show and listen to how many African Americans call in supporting him. Sure some liberal blacks call in too but they always treat each other with respect. How many times I have listened to Sean or Mark Levin and a black liberal will listen to the show for the first time and overnight almost they realize that they are not liberals they are conservatives too. He has many regular black callers now that first tuned in to listen to a supposed racist and now they are big fans too.
Black or White read Angela McGlowans excellent book "Bamboozled" and how the Left tricks minorities into supporting the democratic party. (the party of the KKK)
beg to differ. W is one of the worst presidents as under his watch, the economy went in free fall. He forgot the FISCAL conservatism, instead he went towards right wing extremist portion of the Republican party.,. Result is the bitterness and intolerance that is being shown in Republican party today, which is direct derivative of religious intolerance. From the WE ARE MAD comment to YOU LIE comment, the evidence of intolerant behavior is everywhere in republican party. At this juncture, neither the republican not the demos are being truthful to us the American people.
Sarah Palin qualified? You must be breathing in the same moose dung that makes her able to see Russia from her back porch!
Has anyone considered reading To Kill A Mockingbird? The book takes the reader into the thinking and texture of the time period in a far more effective manor than the movie. The book is as much about a thinking mans reaction to an irrational social condition as it is about actual racism. The book also demonstrates what can happen when a person involves themselves with a bad situation. The Ewell families of the world will always be waiting to share thier misery with anyone getting close to thier fire. Any thought on the significance of the rabid dog and the accuracy of Atticus Finch?
Racism in the Unites States has become an industry with no visable product. There are too many people making too much money from the cause of equality for race to ever stop being an issue. Take the money out of racism and racism will dry up and blow away on its own.
"We’re all Bob Ewells if you check with the Left and their media mouthpieces"
Sounds like you've clearly made up your mind…god forbid you point out rush, oriley, beck and the other right wing nut jobs, and how they fan the flames of hatred every day……
It's very interesting after doing some research that I cannot find any source for the post

Perhaps Carter forgot his own racism during his 1970 gubernatorial campaign against Carl Sanders. During this contest, he instituted a smear campaign accusing Sanders of "associating with Blacks".
Other than this post made on this blog. It does not exist anywhere on the net that I can find.
Also, the statement His direct support of segregation in 1956 seems also to have been forgotten."
is also hard to find any accuracy for that statement other than right wing blogs or websites. Here are the facts as I can find…most if not all statement about Carter's blatant racism is attributed to Stephen Hayward's The Real Jimmy Carter.
Andrea King obviously knows how to play to her crowd and judging from the majority of the comments she is on the money once again! Good job. But I don't see anything in this article that is informative or helpful to the readers; you want them to believe that racism is dead because black men do not get lynched as often as occurred in the past (its 2009 and there has actually been a case or two in the not too distant past) and that in fact the poor white man is now the victim of racism! WOW! Racism is now practiced in very subtle ways the most common being not affording someone the courtesy you would afford to someone else in a similar position. This may include choosing to be rude to someone when you're usually a very controlled individual or spreading what you know to be outrageous lies about someone (Sarah Pallin & her death panels story). You can always hide behind claims of freedom of speech when it serves you. This article is total crap because it is preaching to the choir and fails to address the ways racism is practiced today.
That's your comeback? You're not as bad as a hollywood caricature so therefore you must be free of racial bias? And you also must be blameless because you also hate a white guy with equal vehemence? As long as you hate people of more than one race then obviously your motives must be pure and your reasoning uncolored, right?
Racism doesn't have to wear a hood to be recognizable.
Andrea, The whole foundation of your argument here is bullshit. With your logic, let me punch you in the face, then say "That's not violence… if you want to see violence, watch (insert_violent_movie_name_here)"
There are generations and generations of southern white families who were raised to believe they were superior to minorities, no big deal right, it was politically correct up until what… 40-50 years ago? There are voters alive to this day who in their younger years openly terrorized blacks because it was OK at the time. You may have seen one at your local tea party…
I’m just saying people, lets remember our American Heritage. Racism is part of it. We as Americans are not proud of that, (most of us) but it is as real as the Civil War. To say it is not a factor in today’s politics, when we have a black (half black) president, who is the most demonized and vocally opposed since even before he took office, is just….whats the word…..ignorant.
Racism today is delivered is a sneaky and cowardly fashion. So to to really measure the true magnitude of racism in this country we each need to look at ourselves thru a truely honest lens, if your not a racist, than they aren't talking about you.

When Harper Lee wrote and published To Kill a Mockingbird in the early 60s the country was just waking up to the growing Civil Rights Movement. Race and racism were constantly being argued about and discussed and the possibility of change was rife. Lee was obviously influenced by the cultural and political context of the time but she chose to set To Kill a Mockingbird a few decades earlier. At a time when prejudices were deep and racial conflict was the order to the day. The setting of the novel, in a small town in the Deep South painted a picture of an extremely unfair society. Against this backdrop Atticus Finch appeared a mightier hero as he stood up for what he believed in at a time when others mocked and insulted him for it. This lesson, passed on to his children is what really stands the test of time. Put in the same position, the book seems to ask us, how would we behave?
thats not bob ewell.
