2.) Ok, I'm down with not using human embryos for research. I believe they're human. But there's work that's already been done and lines of cells that already exist, so what about research using those existing strains of stem cells that won't require any further embryos to be sacrificed? What about non-embryonic stem cells, taken from umbilical cords? Or any other method that doesn't require the use of a human embryo?

The funding of embryonic stem cell research is disturbing as for the first time, the US government has officially declared that a particular segment of the human race may be expendable for the benefit of curious scientists. A whole classification of human beings are now deliberately omitted from Constitutional protections by the very government sworn to treat all people as equals under the law.
It is now official US policy that this segment of humanity is not only unprotected, but may be bought and sold as property. The property may be held as long and experimented in any way as the 'owners' want without interference and with taxpayer dollars; with the 'bonus' of no concerns about 'morality' being raised.
Obama wants 'science by concensus' and concerns regarding medical ethics will no longer be allowed to hamper 'science'.
After all…issues regarding human life are 'above his pay grade'.

Embryos ARE human beings (no need to “believe” or “feel”, its a fact, just like cars are solid is a fact, you can “believe” they aren’t, but when you get hit, you will “know” you were wrong.) If you were to look at your DNA from when you were sperms and eggs, then look at the DNA from the embryo, and then 6 months later while still a fetus, the DNA would be tangibly different on a chemical basis.
These differences are important as they allow some genes to turn on and then turn off. Its important for some structures to develop rapidly in utero in order to make the jump from cell ball to embryo or from embryo to fetus, and they have little “booster rocket” growth promoter genes that can drive the growth of an organ at impressive rates. For example, your kidneys take less that a week to go from two cells to two functioning kidneys. Without the epigenetic switches turning off these growth genes, we would have tumors of the liver and kidney (like you have in Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, an epigenetic/genetic disease of a growth factor called WT-1.)
Putting unprogrammed cells into a person is really not a good idea. Adult stem cells are being proven over and over again to work better and more safely. Modifying adult cells to behave like stem cells is also ahead of embryonic stem cells.
This is a classic Obama move. He gets the Chronic Illness industry to throw him a bone with tragic children on the nightly news, and he gets the ignorant liberal base fired up over a non-issue (easy to do as they are all about “feelings” and not about taking hard science in college). By the time these cells get to a patient, the other treatments will be commonplace and all the problems associated with embryonic stem cells will either not come to pass due to market pressure or be the problem of the next guy.
Basically, a bunch of great press at no real cost to him.

My response to that is, "why?"
Why does letting a cloned embryo *live* become "profoundly wrong" when creating one and killing it is acceptable?
My feeling on this is that killing is wrong, and life is right. I don't see a moral problem with creating a cloned person (with some qualifications on *how* that happens) who is logically and scientifically nothing more frightening than a time removed identical twin person. (And because of mitochondrial dna, even less identical than a twin.) I expected to disagree with Alfonzo on this, but instead found that he's actually named the one concern I find valid, and the one concern with which I entirely agree.
Personhood.
Moral problems (to understate the gravity of it) occur when we define some varieties of human life as not-human. The moral issues with human experimentation, cloning, and whatever, are solved by a single very elegant thing… personhood. Any time we define some living people as not-human for whatever reason… because they are too unformed, too small, too damaged, too old, created in a lab, or the wrong race… we've got problems. Serious problems. Science fiction has explored clones as replacement parts, exact duplicates, modes of immortality, monsters… and by now it's pretty old hat… a clone is an individual, a twin, not a duplicate, and growing a new body means growing a person and if that person is used for parts, or an old personality is "downloaded" into a new body, then there has been a murder.
Perhaps allowing embryos to be defined as not-human, not a person, requires that clones also be defined that way. Not-human. Not a person. And yes, that would be profoundly wrong.
The other option is to understand that embryos are human persons. And human clones are human persons. When that is understood, the solutions to the moral quandaries involved are almost elegant.
Don't kill people.

I’d like to comment on the medias deception, which many here are aware of so this will be for the benefit of the bedwetting leftists. When the media talks of stem cell research they don’t break it down into the various groups: adult, embryonic, umbilical. Instead they simply use the phrase “stem cell research” and tell their audience that those opposing embryonic stem cell research are opposed to all stem cell research. Of course nothing could be further from the truth but this is how the media plays its games of manipulation and deception.
Also Bush never banned research of embryonic stem cells, he banned taxpayer dollars funding this morally repugnant research. The liberal idiots [redundancy] in Hollywood were free to put their money where their mouths are and pay for it themselves. But as we know liberals, even the rich ones, love spending other people’s money, just not their own. Now obama is using our tax dollars to fund this research that many find objectionable. Obama and the donks are such despicable dregs.

I am a big fan of Alfonzo and view his conservative rants as refreshing discourse, so eagerly needed in today's secular, unthinking pop culture. I post his videos and other thought pieces on Twitter and Facebook. I am certain I have turned off several associates, but I simply don't care. One of the essentials for conservatives is to first outline our core principles in a compelling and current way. I'm usually a voice of one in these discussions because I'm hard-line pro-life and also pro-human cloning. I don't see why we can't "mess around with" humans. Maybe we could cure genetic diseases with something other than abortion? That would be a good thing. Maybe, someday, we could do even more than that. I don't think we should be afraid of those things or afraid of research into those things. But in order to open the doors to human genetic science I think that we must be very clear that humans are humans and must be treated as humans.
We must resist the temptation to decide that some humans don't count.
I have constructed (with a little bit of help) four human beings. The standard of protection for them, starting at conception, is "good faith." No deliberate harm. No blatantly negligent harm.
This isn't onerous.
And it's not something that wouldn't work just as well in a lab… No deliberate harm. No blatant negligent harm. Operate in good faith. Do not create human life for the purpose of destroying it. Do not create human life in a way or with the intention of defining that life as non-human.
This severely limits a number of things, but opens the doors for research in areas that are broad and, at present, highly frightening to a great many people.

I'm neutral on abortion, but think the Supreme Court needs to stop dodging the issue, saying it's about a woman's right to privacy of her body. F that.
Force the 9 to decide when a embryo/fetus becomes a person. If they say at the moment of conception, fine. If they say at the moment of birth, fine. But that's what it comes down to: exactly when does a fetus/infant have the right to not be "murdered"?

They can rule only on what is brought before them. They cannot make up arguments for one side.
This is a Legislative issue. The Legislative defines.
So, Montana and North Dakota are in the final stages of defining "personhood" as beginning at conception.
This action is the result of Roe SCOTUS:
"If this suggestion of personhood is established, the appellant's case, of course, collapses, for the fetus' right to life would then be guaranteed specifically by the [Fourteenth] Amendment."
In other words, had Texas brought a definition of "person" before the Court, the Court says it would have had to rule the other way. As I say, Montana and North Dakota are fixing that.

Its important for some structures to develop rapidly in utero in order to make the jump from cell ball to embryo or from embryo to fetus, and they have little “booster rocket” growth promoter genes that can drive the growth of an organ at impressive rates. For example, your kidneys take less that a week to go from two cells to two functioning kidneys. Without the epigenetic switches turning off these growth genes, we would have tumors of the liver and kidney (like you have in Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, an epigenetic/genetic disease of a growth factor called WT-1.)
Putting unprogrammed cells into a person is really not a good idea. Adult stem cells are being proven over and over again to work better and more safely. Modifying adult cells to behave like stem cells is also ahead of embryonic stem cells.
This is a classic Obama move. He gets the Chronic Illness industry to throw him a bone with tragic children on the nightly news, and he gets the ignorant liberal base fired up over a non-issue (easy to do as they are all about “feelings” and not about taking hard science in college). By the time these cells get to a patient, the other treatments will be commonplace and all the problems associated with embryonic stem cells will either not come to pass due to market pressure or be the problem of the next guy.

While announcing that the federal government would fund embryonic stem cell research Obama made pains to proclaim cloning "profoundly wrong."
My response to that is, "why?"
Why does letting a cloned embryo *live* become "profoundly wrong" when creating one and killing it is acceptable?
My feeling on this is that killing is wrong, and life is right. I don't see a moral problem with creating a cloned person (with some qualifications on *how* that happens) who is logically and scientifically nothing more frightening than a time removed identical twin person. (And because of mitochondrial dna, even less identical than a twin.) I expected to disagree with Alfonzo on this, but instead found that he's actually named the one concern I find valid, and the one concern with which I entirely agree.
Personhood.
Moral problems (to understate the gravity of it) occur when we define some varieties of human life as not-human. The moral issues with human experimentation, cloning, and whatever, are solved by a single very elegant thing… personhood. Any time we define some living people as not-human for whatever reason… because they are too unformed, too small, too damaged, too old, created in a lab, or the wrong race… we've got problems. Serious problems. Science fiction has explored clones as replacement parts, exact duplicates, modes of immortality, monsters… and by now it's pretty old hat… a clone is an individual, a twin, not a duplicate, and growing a new body means growing a person and if that person is used for parts, or an old personality is "downloaded" into a new body, then there has been a murder.
Perhaps allowing embryos to be defined as not-human, not a person, requires that clones also be defined that way. Not-human. Not a person. And yes, that would be profoundly wrong.
The other option is to understand that embryos are human persons. And human clones are human persons. When that is understood, the solutions to the moral quandaries involved are almost elegant.
Don't kill people.
Dissent all you want. You lost. So you get stem cell research funding. Suck on that.

I’d like to comment on the medias deception, which many here are aware of so this will be for the benefit of the bedwetting leftists. When the media talks of stem cell research they don’t break it down into the various groups: adult, embryonic, umbilical. Instead they simply use the phrase “stem cell research” and tell their audience that those opposing embryonic stem cell research are opposed to all stem cell research. Of course nothing could be further from the truth but this is how the media plays its games of manipulation and deception.
Also Bush never banned research of embryonic stem cells, he banned taxpayer dollars funding this morally repugnant research. I am a big fan of Alfonzo and view his conservative rants as refreshing discourse, so eagerly needed in today's secular, unthinking pop culture. I post his videos and other thought pieces on Twitter and Facebook. I am certain I have turned off several associates, but I simply don't care. One of the essentials for conservatives is to first outline our core principles in a compelling and current way. I'm usually a voice of one in these discussions because I'm hard-line pro-life and also pro-human cloning. I don't see why we can't "mess around with" humans. Maybe we could cure genetic diseases with something other than abortion? That would be a good thing. Maybe, someday, we could do even more than that. I don't think we should be afraid of those things or afraid of research into those things. But in order to open the doors to human genetic science I think that we must be very clear that humans are humans and must be treated as humans.
We must resist the temptation to decide that some humans don't count.
I have constructed (with a little bit of help) four human beings. The standard of protection for them, starting at conception, is "good faith." No deliberate harm. No blatantly negligent harm.
This isn't onerous.

This is a Legislative issue. The Legislative defines.
So, Montana and North Dakota are in the final stages of defining "personhood" as beginning at conception.
This action is the result of Roe SCOTUS:
"If this suggestion of personhood is established, the appellant's case, of course, collapses, for the fetus' right to life would then be guaranteed specifically by the [Fourteenth] Amendment."
In other words, had Texas brought a definition of "person" before the Court, the Court says it would have had to rule the other way. As I say, Montana and North Dakota are fixing that.
