Sen. Kerry Recycles Greenpeace’s Lie About Arctic Ice

John Kerry proved it this week when he recycled Greenpeace’s lie about an ice-free Arctic and said it will become a reality even sooner, by 2013.
We exposed Greenpeace’s lie less than two weeks ago on our blog and on Big Hollywood, and forced the group to issue a rare “clarification.” Our piece and the companion video went viral. Even the pro-environment blog at the left-wing Guardian newspaper acknowledged that “Greenpeace will be bruised by this furor.”
But none of that exposure kept Kerry, D-Mass., from repeating and amplifying the lie in a predictably hysterical op-ed about “catastrophic climate change” for the liberal Huffington Post.
To justify his alarmism that global warming is a national security threat, Kerry parroted the tired and discredited claim about Arctic ice. “Scientists project that the Arctic will be ice-free in the summer of 2013,” he wrote. “Not in 2050, but four years from now.”
Greenpeace wasn’t even willing to distort the truth that much when it mentioned melting Arctic ice in a July 15 article. The group pinpointed 2030 as doomsday, 17 years later than Kerry.
But even that claim was so bogus that Greenpeace’s own leader recanted when pressed by BBC reporter Stephen Sackur. “I don’t think it will be melting by 2030. … That may have been a mistake,” Gerd Leipold said last month on “Hardtalk.”
When we publicized that admission, Greenpeace appended a note to its story online but also tried to manufacture a phony grassroots campaign to cover up the admission. That’s the kind of behavior that emboldens politicians like Kerry to make even more outrageous claims.
Kerry’s decision to regurgitate and exaggerate the lie about melting ice just goes to show that no fact is too sound for environmentalists to distort and that they have no qualms about using their scare tactics even after being caught in a lie.
Being an environmentalist means never having to say you’re sorry.

It also seems to escape these Einsteins that the Arctic ice cap is floating on the ocean. If the entire thing melted (which ice cores show it hasn't for at least the last 150,000 years, during which the atmospheric CO2 content was up to 6 times higher than now) the sea levels would not go up an inch. Didn't they do that grade 6 science experiment with the full glass with the ice cube in it?

Uh, nothing much really. Most of Arctic Ice is sea ice and the melting of sea ice really does not do much of anything except slightly (not really signifigant) decrease the salinity of sea water.

Please see Politifact on Kerry's comments, which gets a barely true. He was not quoting Greenpeace but a respected reseacher in this field. Clearly you mean independent of fact knowledge. I read respected professional science journals and have friends with PhD's in the natural sciences. Now weather and flucuations in same do not go away because of broad trends. There are and were places and times when it got really hot when it was mostly cool and the reverse is also true.

You know, here in Wisconsin, we could use a little global warming. It snowed over 100 inches two winters ago. Last winter, it wasn't as bad, but it was still at least 80 inches.
I know I'm not a scientist with published stuff in peer reviewed journals, but I do know that plants respire CO2, and in warmer times plants grow like gangbusters, and turn more CO2 into oxygen. Then it cools down again. Seems like the earth takes care of itself pretty well to me.

The land under the ice will also raise like a cork when the heavy weight of the ice is melted off… This is evident in the land the Inuit up in Northern Canada… the ice is melting but the areas where they fish are getting more shallow… I wish I could remember exactly where it is otherwise I would tell you as proof… but I can get the info if anyone is interested.

Actually you would have to work about 18 times as hard. That noted liberal journal Popular Science had a recent article dealing with aspectsa of global warming. That real hotbed of progreesive thought the Department of Defense has had seversl analysis's of the possible advresr consequences to US national security of global warming. I believe you mean well and are to be colimented for your industry as a teenager, would that you would do so now in the pursuit of facts rather than shopping for parts of the story that support the view you hold.

I think you went "shopping" to find support for your views and what you found is not false, it is part of the story , which is not fully understood. science works by asking questions and testing hypothesises. Popular Science, that exceedingly liberal rag, had a recent large article about the possible consequences of global warming. The progressive dominated Department of Defence has had several studies which view cosequences of global warming as threats to US security.
I'll defer to Manji88 below. CO2 levels have fluctuated drastically, long before CFCs, tire fires, and soft glow of incandescence. I'll use green energy if I can turn a profit with it, but I won't use it based solely on the Department of Defense telling me to. They need to stop worrying about Gaia's Revenge and spend more time dealing with Mohammed's Legion of Crazies.
