Come Fly With Me
by Phelim McAleer & Ann McElhinneyWe do admit to being conflicted, sometimes, when writing about the politics of Global Warming hysteria.
It is hilarious that Al Gore’s electricity bill is ten times the national average. However, our idea of a perfect world is when everyone in Africa and the developing world is so wealthy they are using the same amount of electricity as the former vice-president.
If the world were that wealthy it would mean the end of the scourge of needless child mortality. It would mean that people in Africa would live long and healthy lives and get to know the joy of their grandchildren. It would mean that children would know how wonderful it is to see their parents live to an old age.
So our initial reaction to Al Gore’s electricity bill is that we wish it for everyone. But then we are faced with the reality that Al Gore wants legislation to force people to use less electricity and fly less. Then his electricity bill becomes an issue of hypocrisy and freedom. He wants the freedom to use and consume but wants to deny that to ordinary Americans and, perhaps more tragically, to the people of the developing world. So Al Gore’s electricity bill and use of a private jet should be highlighted as part of a belief by the environmental movement that change and deprivation “for the good of the planet” should only be borne by other people. Private jets are essential for eco-celebrities because their work is important. The rest of us have to reduce our carbon footprint because our travel is “frivolous and wasteful.”
Just last week, President Obama and the first lady flew to New York to see a Broadway show. They also flew an entourage of assistants and media in separate planes. In a statement, President Obama said: “I am taking my wife to New York City because I promised her during the campaign that I would take her to a Broadway show after it was all finished.” Well that’s great and we hope they enjoyed the show. But isn’t this the same president who said during the campaign that: “We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times…and then just expect that other countries are going to say ‘OK.’”?
I know he promised his wife that he would take her to a show but if we all have to make sacrifices for the good of the planet, perhaps he should have started with their little jaunt to New York for a date.
But it seems for President Obama that sacrifice is something only other people (poorer people) make.

I thought Mayor Bloomberg's defense of the Obama's date night was hilarious.
“I can’t think of anything that is a better as an advertisement for our tourism industry, for Broadway, for our restaurants, for saying this is a safe city, and an affordable city. The president doesn’t get paid that much. He’s on a budget too,” Bloomberg said.
Only a billionaire could consider spending $25,000+ for a night out on the town affordable. And only a billionaire could possibly use the word "affordable" in relationship to NYC. And only a billionaire could think that $400,000 isn't much to be paid…
Hypocrisy is a major tenant of Marxism. There’s one life for the premier, the politburo, and government apparatchiks, and another for the rest of us. The cast system is changed from ability and drive to mediocrity and what’s fair, and who decides what’s fair? Global warming is just another club for statist to pick up and beat the Free Market about the head and shoulders. I suspect once we get near the end of this monstrosity of an administration the American people will send the Democrats packing, in 2010, and finish cleaning this mess in 2012, comrades, ha.
I don't really care if the Presidebt has a fancy evening. I think the timing is bad.
But to me, it seems that president isn't a normal person. The President causes huge dispuption where ever he goes. He can't just slip out to go to a burger joint. (When Obama and Biden did, you think it was just like your lunch outtting?)
By virtue of being President the individual in that office needs to be cognizant that it will be a very disruptive and expensive night for America.
(Couldn't he have done it between November and January? Just wondering)
DC has venues that are much more accomodating to high profile clients.
All that said, I have no big issue with it if done on ocassion. If he makes a habit of it, I will give him grief.
the not so funny reality is that the folk in Africa and in the US will have about the same access to energy-
little, and it will be expensive… part of what the liberal elite want to do is raise energy prices dramatically. This will achieve the goal they want most, which is to slow consumption. This lot thinks we are devouring the planet, and we need to be taken out of our autos, out of the country and stacked on top of each other in green cities and fed, basically Soylent Green (when Soylent Yellow and Red run low, y'know). Scary as this may sound utopians have always lived in dream worlds and this one is no different- these goals are millenia away…
We have adversaries and enemies who have slightly different ideas…
Do as I say, not as I say.
A very old saying and around for a reason. A leader must be careful as the children are always watching.
One thing that used to get the French kings in trouble was this hypocrisy. In those cases, they often lost their heads.
we should be so luck this time.
Ahhh…let the poor unwashed, non-muslims eat tofu…….ha.. ha.. ha.. ha.. ha.. ha.
" Dear Leader One, …Wind is at your back, altimeter is whatever you deem it to be, Cleared for takeoff!"
"Sharia Tower, Dear Leader One is rolling down the runway of elitist hypocrisy ready to bore holes in the sky of unlimited and glorious marxist transformation!!"
"Dear Leader One, report crossing the point of economic destruction, climb and maintain a narcissistic height, unknown to humankind!!"
"Sharia Tower, Dear Leader One, is there!"
"Dear Leader One, contact Blame Bush Departure Control on any frequency your highness desires."
He should explain that to the Mayor of Vegas.
I'd agree with you except that when the man wants pizza, he flies in a chef from St. Louis.
Then his electricity bill becomes an issue of hypocrisy and freedom
Much in the same way one makes a documentary excoriating envrionmentalists using funds from a mining company, right?
once again my bumper-slogan: "I'm so green I'm soylent"
OK point taken. Does flying in a pizza chef from St Louis cost more than him flying to St. louis for said Pizza? Are there no goog pizza joints in DC?
But does he do it any more often than other presidents? If so: Problem. if not: crappy, but not a problem to get twisted up about.
When environmentalists use divisive power politics, disingenuous subject matter, outright lies and scare tactics. I could care less. When their aim is power and not the environment, I say, more power to them. Minus one for use of lib taking points.
'Delta five Bravo, this is Red Leader. Come in' … man, you sound like an ATC- you know? maybe even an FAC- we've worked with those folk in the past. Talk about FEBA (tip of the spear to you civilians)…
funny. Good post. Semper Fi…

I dont' know whether to laugh at or cry for New Yorkers at Bloomie's comment now….
"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." Animal Farm, George Orwell.
That's all I've been thinking for the past five months— that, and the first two thirds of Atlas Shrugged.
I don't have a problem with rich people like the Obamas going to a Broadway show. I DO have a problem with being stuck with the bill at $24k. This shows incredibly poor judgement especially after telling everyone else to tighten their belts.
I don't have a problem with a rich guy using 20 times the energy in his mansion that a normal house uses. I DO have a problem with that rich guy telling everyone else to give up their SUVs and air conditioning as he boards a G4.
Add to the mix that the science behind global warming is in serious question and the whole thing sounds like a scam. Al Gore is just like those televangelists that beg for money while building air conditioned condos for their dogs…..
"I could care less."
Now theres the logic behind how some advertising worked so effectively.
Yes an ideal world where everyone is wealthy does sound wonderful but the reality is much more harsh. If everyone in the world were wealthy and living longer lives we would really have a sustainability issue. We have seen early problems with the development of India and China and how the strain that placed on the food supply drove up the price of staple foods like milk, bread (of course the enviro nuts didn't help with bio-fuels). One of life's cruel realities is there simply isn't enough for everyone and the one world government nuts who seem to think we can just redistribute to everyone aren't acknowledging the havoc it would cause.
Also Al Gore is more than a hypocrite, the man borders on being a criminal.
Global warming is not now and never has been about the planet; from the get-go it has been about American middle class prosperity which is a poke in the eye to the under and undeveloped world — even to Europe with their Vespas and mass transit. Three cars in the garage! Outrageous! Air Conditioning! All that freon into the air! NO! Smog, pollution, cutting down the trees to grow cows for the Yanks hamburgers! OUTRAGEOUS. Gotta bring those Yanks into line with the rest of the world so we don't feel so bad about ourselves and our lack of prosperity. Nobody every said the elite were going to have to share in the "classlessness"; they didn't in the old USSR, they don't in Chavez's Venezuela, or Castro's Cuba or Mugabe's Zimbabwe. It's the proletariat that takes it on the chin. But SHUSH. We want the Prolie to think HE'S the dictator.
The truth is the sun has been in a hyperactive phase for the past decade (it has since stopped flaring so much) and Mars is heating up, too, ergo Mars has global warming. But you don't hear about that, do you?
No kidding. How many people have lost thier jobs because that petulant paltroon opened his Marxist maw about conventions in Vegas? And then he has the gall to take his wife to Broadway. This bozo has all the markings of a Third World, 'leventy-star general president for life, who spews Marxisim for us lumpy proles but can't find "austerity" in the "big word-meaning book".
Whew! I'm feeling much better now.
oh, i missed have missed something…i thought that WE, the tax-paying public, paid for the obamas little jaunt to new york…they actually paid for all that themselves??? oh, ok…well, i am ok with it now…and i am happy for them that they have EARNED that kind of money for themselves…i guess i have just been a lazy person since i can't afford that kind of fun…
I have seen estimates for the cost of his night on the town edging up to $250,000. Moving that fleet of armored cars by air to NY City was not cheep. Moving his groupies in other aitrcraft was not cheep. What about the NYCPD cost while his motorcade made its way from the helipad to the theater.
Oh well, the taxpayers can afford that.
And he complained about the GM execs flying to DC to get their heads handed to them by the financial wiz kids in the congress.
Can't Papa John's get by his Security?
I was 7312/24 (Tower and GCA) for Mother Green. MCAS Yuma and Iwakuni. If I would have re-enlisted, I was slated to go to FAC and Panthfinder. Me being the dumba$$ I am, I gave it all up to go to…..*drumroll*…the Southern Illinois Re-education Facility at Carbondale, Il. The enomous quantities of beer helped me through it though. $4.95 cases of Rhinelnder beer -including deposit- counteracts the effects of liberal indoctrination. I still have the prescription.
Wow! Imagine the eardrum-splitting screech from the MSM if President Bush and family had flown to Branson for a night of Glen Campbell and Roy Clark. Doesn't bear thinking about does it? As for the environment I think we can take it as given that there is one standard for "The Anointed" (Thomas Sowell's phrase) and another for the rest of us. All the palaver about comparitive energy consumption from the Gore brigade serves two basic purposes. First it is a handy way of beating middle-class types over the head for their "unenlightened" lifestyles. Second it allows the self-proclaimed "protectors of the planet" to call attention to themselves – "Yes you people in Western Africa live in terrible conditions. Now let's talk about me." environmentalism has proven to be the perfect cause for self-absorbed narcissists.
that should be "tenet" and "caste". (i'm just trying to help you better express your thoughts- which i agree with, btw- not be a picky jerk)
make Billy-Boy's $400 haircut look like a bargain!
we have also been in the re-education camp of SIU- some time ago- but the Busch beer got us through the day… sitting on the porch swing on Cherry street with the degenerate roommates (some who were still seeing VC in their dreams) mucking about at Merlin's or the Roadrunner club. Having the professor give us 'C's for A work but we were outspoken conservatives and not liked by faculty.
The women were a different matter altogether. They liked conservatives just fine…
Would Gaia wear a Rolex on Her Television Show?" with apologies to Ray Stevens…
Remind me again what cigarette advertisements from the 60's have to do with enviromentalists, unless it simply proves my point. Which you did!! Thanks, and have a wonderful day full of rainbows, dreams and Bush hatred, …..k!
I watched the animation of "Animal Farm", in 7th grade. I wish it would make the rounds again.
The ad I posted is an example of how industry can drive a message, much like that of McAleer taking money from the mining industry and producing a "documentary" where rubes (like yourself) view it as fact.
I didn't expect to have to walk you thorugh the narrative but you can never set the bar too low over here.
Thank you! Always in a hurry being an evil business owner, ha.
the only 'rubes' who come to this site are clueless lefties who try to make a quick score and then cut and run. Your post proves little else…
But it's perfectly legitimate when a Greenpeace chick like Leonard can produce a similar "documentary" that elitists like yourself view as fact? The source of the money can skew so-called fact both ways.
There is a reason why Al Gore's "documentary" is no longer allowed to be shown in British schools for example – oh yeah, because the British court upheld that it contains 11 falsehoods masquerading as facts. I'm sure you likely bought it though because it was funded by money you find find to come from acceptable sources.
[...] Original post: Come Fly With Me [...]
exactly. It's why the left goes apoplectic when a well funded and researched conservative documentary hit the airwaves. The only difference is it CAN'T be shown… remember the Swiftboat doc that the left killed off back in '04? Like the ABC 9/11 miniseries no competing facts can be allowed to exist on film. We have a problem with all censorship. Algore's mocdoc has an audience, they just shouldn't be captive schoolchildren…
Michael Crichton explained it best in "State of Fear." It's funny how you deride one side for the sources of funding, but refuse to ackowledge that the sources of funding for the messages you like could have an equal agenda to drive. If the mining industry can be capable of only funding studies that serve their best interests, why would it never occur to you that environmental groups would be any different with the studies they fund?
I think it's time for that book to begin being taught in classrooms again. Of course, I'm sure they'd teach it all about how minorities are being oppressed.
Certainly high on my list of books to teach if I get to homeschool.
Yes, I heard the $250K number as well, but I am giving Our Dear Leader the benefit of the doubt while I wait for the response to my FIOA request for the exact price this cost the taxpayers from his office.
Ol' Billionaire Mike said that the city was happy to pay for the security because of the boost to the city…well you know the rest. I have let him know that he is mistaken about that. I, for one, am not happy about it.
It was interesting because even some of the people in the press were taken aback. They couldn't ever remember a President just taking the plane out for a night on the town. They usually waited for another political event or meeting to take the opportunity to have a date night-like function.
Some posts from a liberal board that pretty much proves the point of this article.
Generally, we see that the issue starts to fix itself in more developed societies. Population stops booming, Countries like India and China haven't reached that threshold yet.
The problem we face now is that cultures that are less developed are overwhelming our own through sheer force of numbers. If those cultures assimilated, not an issue, but in today's PC environment, we are not allowed to assimilate immigrants into American Western culture, and therefore, American Western culture risks being lost as does European Western culture.
Wealth and development risk actually going backwards.
I leave you with a quote from Tuesday's NY Post, while we're on the topic of riches.
Biden — who also spoke at Pace University yesterday about President Obama's economic program — is seen shopping in Midtown (above) with a Secret Service woman close behind.
He stopped at Teuscher Madison Avenue, a high-end chocolate shop, and Barneys New York, where he forked over $2,421 for an Ermenegildo Zegna suit.
"He was looking for an inexpensive suit," said sales associate Voytek Andrejczyn.
Awesome. I heard he wipes his ass with 50s too.
How depressing! What was, at one time, my favorite sattelite channel is today running more Gore-bal Warming fellatio scare-u-mentary. Friggin………………bah! It's been going off the deep end for quite some time but, the cliff edge has been reached and they are over it. Done with it. They've lost a viewer for life. To top that all off, they followed with a pointed show about past religion being smoke, mirrors and nothing but a scare show to, control and frighten the great unwashed. The inference that today's religions were still engaged in this sort of thing, was deafening. The cast of bloviating academia that spewed all this stuff looked like they just came back from a Berkeley Street Freak Show. Gad-zooooks!
Pish posh, old girl! The devil you say! Dear Leader having to actually lead by……example! How provincial, I say!
Good post, man! How come we understand this and the libs…………
Never mind. I just answered my own question.
If he did it between November and January 20 he wouldn't have been able to stick the taxpayers with the tab for all this.
There's no way that the Obamas and their entourage flew in three planes to New York, had a glorious evening and flew back for a mere 24 thousand dollars. We have a right to know what the real cost of this little jaunt was.
Isn't the cost now up to way way over that, more like $200,000?
Welfare mentality of taking complete advantage of and making a complete fool of the taxpayers while the opportunity exists. Obama sure is the quintessential poster boy for marxism. Obama condems the likes of private corporation CEOs for their extravagance, and then he pulls this crap. After all, Obama is the comrade and the taxpayers are proletariats. All hail Obama.
DC has the Kennedy Center … as fine a cultural institution as you're likely to find. That might have made for much greener compromise …

Well, it´s Biden. How is he supposed to know how much a suit is! Maybe he had read $24.21 and was too embarrased to admit his mistake. That´s just Joe. He does like to point out that he is one of the poorest Senators. Maybe he thought buying a suit by one "Ermenegildo Zegna" constitutes outreach to the Latino community. Maybe he has a campaign donor named Zegna.

Gore IS an industry. Environmentalism IS an industry. And the money is good. No private company can compete with billions of taxpayer money spent on climate "research" and public education. Did that ever occur to you? Or maybe the idea of using the state to push citizens and businesses around simply gives you a hard on?
I guess The Messiah was entitled to an evening out on our dime because bungling foreign affairs and wrecking an economy, all done while blaming G.W.Bush, is very tiring work.
My problem with Gore is not so much that he is a hypocrite (although he is that). My problem is that he is fundamentally wrong. I do not buy into his anti-human narrative. I do not believe overpopulation is a problem; only lack of development is. If all people on this planet had our living standards, they would have our productivity, our inventiveness and our very high environmental standards, too. Imagine the current rate of innovation times five, times ten. We would solve problems at an incredible rate. Development is not a zero-sum game; there is no fixed pie to distribute. Growth is real. Malthus was wrong. And Gore´s ideas are a load of hogwash that was popular in the 1970s.
"….immediately stopping 100% of their personal contribution to pollution is unrealistic…."
They do love to build strawmen, don´t they? A whole army of them every time they open their cakeholes.
Also the same guy who said execs couldn't fly to Vegas on the peoples dime. Hmph
They only paid for the show and dinner. We all paid to ferry them up and back.
Bloom has dug himself a hole..though he will probably win, hes po'd a lot of people. Me for one. My sis and bro in law a had visit from a Bloom camp worker last week. My bro in law said he wasnt a big fan of Bloomies and then the camp asked if my sis was home and he told her yes but she was even less of a fan….these billionaires think we are all stupid. I wouldnt vote for MB if you paid me.
