‘Justified’: The Best Show On TV
by Alicia ColonTuesday was the finale of what I’ve come to believe is the best show on TV: “Justified.” I say that not because I’m enamored of the lead, Timothy Olyphant – and who would not love that hat? — but because of the show’s iconoclastic portrayal of the South.

Hollywood has always stereotyped the South as full of ignorant rednecks and racists, and the Mason Dixie line became synonymous for Yankees like me, especially dark-skinned Latinas, as an area to avoid. Nevertheless, I met my husband forty years ago in the deepest of the South — Florida — and had an opportunity to form my own opinion.
I learned that the N- word was routinely used by blacks and whites to describe any black and I was probably called a half-breed “spic” behind my back. That didn’t bother me, and as the years passed my in-laws grew up, so did the South. One thing I did note was that none of the Southerners I met had any resemblance to the Hollywood boobs in the movies or on TV. They were bright, articulate and romantic. My husband reminded me that some of the best American literature is by Southerners and about the South.
While I was never before an Olyphant fan, his character Ravlan Givens, U.S. Marshal, is the strong, silent, tough breed of man common to the West, Midwest and South and rare on the coasts, but beloved by women of all ages.
Think John Wayne.
Givens was created by Elmore Leonard and appeared in two of his novels, “Pronto” and “Riding the Rap.” The pilot episode of “Justified” was based on Leonard’s short story, “Fire in the Hole.” What is always intriguing about Leonard’s villains is that they usually end up being the most interesting characters in the plot.
As I watched each episode of “Justified” I would ask, “Where did they find these actors? ” (Many of whom I was unfamiliar with.) They are so authentically Southern. Turns out they are genuine sons of the South.
The most fascinating of all is Boyd Crowder played by Walton Goggins, born in Birmingham, Alabama. Boyd is a murderer and drug dealer who, after having a near death experience, claims to have seen the light. His flowery speech is reminiscent of Tennessee Williams and his profound utterances of Scripture leave you wondering through the rest of the season if he’s sincere or not. The season finale, “Welcome to Bulletville,” answered that question perfectly. This was by far the most satisfying season finale of any show I’ve watched in a long time and it leaves viewers panting for the show’s return.
Other standouts are veteran actor M.C. Gainey, who plays Boyd’s evil father Bo and who hails from Jackson, Mississippi; Nick Searcy, plays Chief Deputy Art Mullen, and is from North Carolina. The women stars are from Texas and other points south, and are as tough as the pioneer women who tamed the West.
“Justified” appears on the FX network and each episode contains a warning that the show is intended for mature audiences only. Generally this is because of politically-incorrect language and some nudity. But not to worry, there’s nothing in the show as obscene as what’s on the Bill Maher show.

It's Mason-Dixon Line, named for the surveyors who laid it, and it's the northern border of Maryland, for crying out loud: D.C. is, "south of the Mason-Dixon Line." Civil War era ideas of what "The South" is don't really apply anymore.
Otherwise, a fine tribute to an awesome show.
Looks like a good show, I'll have to check it out.
I have to agree. The best on the box in 2010! I have recorded every episode and I am planning to have a "Justified" festival this weekend.
My viewing habits make watching even the majority of episodes of any show unlikely, but this one is great. And despite multiple, ongoing story lines each is still entertaining in it's own right. Maybe they are just warning us down South here about showing too much of a ladies ankles but I have missed all the gittin nekkid parts.
I loved the first season and cannot wait for the second.
"Justified" is terrific, but I think "Breaking Bad" is the best tv show currently on the air. Can't wait for tonight's season finale.
I am saddened that Justified is over but they are signed up for a season 2 which is a brilliant and beautiful thing. Best show on TV hands down.
Definitely the best show. The characters are gritty and interesting and so is their interaction. A nice relief from all the blow dried narcisism that permeates the entertainment industry.
This is just an excellent show. It has some of the best characters. It was nice to see so many from Deadwood as well this season (a show I greatly miss). Olyphant and the gang deserve some major kudos.
And it was a nice buffer until Sons returns in the fall…
Alicia, couldn't agree more. The acting, writing, characters, everything is first-rate. The only one I'm not fond of is Raylin's Dad. That sing-songy voice grates.
Thanks for the heads up about a good show. Very hard to find these days..
Also I must mention that this show will be good for only a few seasons. Like every other program on television, Liberals eventually entrench themselves into the writing and production and ruin it for everyone. As in Law and Order, 21, Cold Case, CSI etc etc etc….
Love this show. EVERYONE in the cast does a fine job. It is right at the top of our WATCH IT! list!
I've watched Justified and loved it. However, this past week, the story line is going nowhere. I hope it gets good again.
I watched a bit of the pilot (not enough) and dismissed it as a flop. A couple weeks later I read a RAVING review here on Big Hollywood (I believe it was by John Nolte) and decided to give it another shot. I am oh so very glad I did!! By far the BEST show I have ever watched. Very dramatic & engaging with a gernerous sprinkling of humor. I am utterly heartbroken that the season is over, but being an FX show I am looking forward to a "Justified" marathon.
Mrs. Colon, just one point to make. Born and raised in Georgia and nobody in this state considers Florida to be part of the south. Its just part of Yankee land that broke off and floated down here. lol
The back episodes are posted on HULA, well worth the watch.
Must say, it did not happen to "The Shield" which was also on FX. The best series on TV evah.
Definitely one of the best shows on TV. As others have mentioned it's a close 2nd to Breaking Bad. Justified is actually created by a fellow Canadian, Graham Yost from Toronto. His other credits include the movie Speed, Broken Arrow and Hard Rain and the mini-series the Pacific. His dad Elwy Yost had a show on public television for years here in Ontario called "Saturday Night at the Movies" Think Turner Classics without the Turner. Of course Graham resides in LA now.
Me either, but I'll give Justified a shot when the inevitable marathon comes on. Funny how the mainstream networks aren't making good shows anymore.

Depends on where… The South Starts in Alachua County (Gainesville), FL. Anything south of that… isn't South.

Thanks for the info. Maybe F/X will be a relief in a sea of mediocrity.
if you would have told me that the villian was sincere about his redemption… AS MILLIONS of Americans are, returning to Christ after their public school commie liberal atheist brainwashing… then I would have run out (or rather clicked clicked clicked) and bought the DVD collection and/or set up my DVR!!!
As Christians, we understand that sin will always exist… utopia is such a foolish fantasy of tyranny… but paying for one's sins, paying the price, suffering the consequences, and redemption… NOW THAT'S what life is about.
(the reason i want a spoiler is because, i'm sick and tired of the other)
Oh and if you like Olyphant, check'em out in "When Trumpets Fade" a great lil WWII movie. Really well done. I'm wondering if that film made him???
I watched the show only because I have a huge crush on Timothy Olyphant. I was rewarded by an excellent, entertaining show. I understand too well the idea that most people have of the South. Even though I am educated, I am constantly considered stupid because I have a thick Texas drawl. I have fun with it, because when people think you're too stupid to understand and continually underestimate you, you can pretty much do what you want. Including manipulating them where you want them to be.
Stop thinking Miami Beach. My hubby was born in Jacksonville but grew up in the Everglades when it was deep deep South. Cracker and redneck country, he called it before the Cubans came.. Trust me.Lots of Georgia transplants in his family.
See it
Is that the Hawaiian version of HULU?
I like it too, its a good old fashioned Western. Its more like Gun Smoke than anything since. Good vs Evil and Right vs Wrong. There is no gray here, You know who the bad guys are. I been watching on the internet, Hulu is one of the better things going. And I have to wait till Thursday to catch the season end. FX has a lot of good stuff. By the way.
That's cause he's really a Yankee born in NY. I agree he's real sleaze
I've heard nothing but good things about this show. I will have to check it out. As for the Hollywood stereotypical "South," I agree. I have family in Texas and I've visited many times for weeks at a time and have always had an enjoyable experience. People there are MUCH more friendly than here in California and DEFINITELY more friendly than NY. I have found myself constantly defending Texas and the South to arrogant jerks here in California who believe everything the media tells them. I'm moving there soon.
[...] is Justified and I had to write about it on Big Hollywood because the finale was so perfect. Enjoy No comments Category: [...]
"Justified" was a lot of fun, and a very well made show. I would be in withdrawal, but even though my beloved, trashy, "Tudors" is ending, tonight brings a new season of "True Blood!" (yes, yes, even I, a New Yorker by birth, know the accents are absolutely horrendous but DAMN, I love me that show!)
Well…that's where they film Justifiied, so it sort of makes sense…
This is a great show. Timothy Olyphant does an amazing job of playing the reluctant hero, but I think Walter Goggins steals the show — he's a wonderful actor, and is portraying one of the most memorable characters in recent TV history.
I'm also impressed with Natalie Zea, who plays Raylan's ex-wife. It just seems like films all feature the same four actresses, or the young flavor of the week. TV has much more interesting women.
That's because those of us actually born in Florida are so outnumbered by northeastern libtards that moved down here because the policies they voted for made it to expensive to stay there…
I lived in Texas for 15 years (grew up in CA and recently returned). I taught a class one summer at Texas A&M and a fellow professor, a Yankee, wondered why the southern students were much more polite than the northern ones. My answer was simple and obvious: "They're from the Bible Belt. It's how they were raised."
Ha! My feelings EXACTLY. Love all three shows.
The best show on tv without question. The actors are wonderful, characters are authentic, humor is better than anything else on tv in a long time and the brutality of real life is there too….with no excuses or psychological analysis.
A little Southern Trivia: I am a North Georgia native and I have family in Kentucky and Southern West Virginia. If one was to rank who is most culturally "most Southern", they would be (1) West Virginians (2) Kentuckians (3) Georgians. Last year, we went to Northern Missouri and the people there had a deep southern drawl! So you are correct that the "Southern" boundaries and quite gray.
Ever since The Shield found its terminus I have not been able to find another show worth investing any time into. I enjoy Olyphant's previous work immensely (Deadwood, Rock Star, etc.). Looks like I will have to get the DVDs of Breaking Bad and Justified and catch up. I am always happy when there is an accurate portrayal of life here in the deep south. Have to disagree with Par, though. Move inland from the atlantic florida seaboard into the panhandle and those Floridians are as south as south can be. Good people!
I see things in terms of religion. I am intrigued by the review but almost need to find out the answer to the sincerity question before I watch…..someone….let me know.

I fell in love with this show early on. Each episode built on that. I was pleased to see a solider upset over not being allowed to return to the middle east to fight, and other sides I haven't seen portrayed on TV of late. Wonderful actors and really interesting story lines. Can't wait for season 2.
I've lived in Kentucky all of my 41 years on this earth (with a few exceptions of filthiling my feet in the foul ground of Indiana [Sorry Mitch Daniels]). And I've seen scenes and people just like "Justified" across the state.
Whenever I introduce myself, I say I'm from Louisville, the Jeff Gordon of Kentucky. Everyone hates us, but they all want to be us.
Justified is definitely my favorite show and the final episode was accurately titled. What a blast! Olyphant and Goggins are perfect in their roles!
[...] really shouldn’t begrudge anything positive being written about it in the blogosphere. Still, this Big Hollywood post by Alicia Colon is really pretty dumb, for three specific [...]
I love this show too. The casting is great, the writing is great, it doesn't just take the formulaic, easy, predictable, black and white route that so much tv takes these days. I really can't tell if Boyd (the excellent Walter Groggins) has "seen the light" or not and I love that I can't tell!
The characters are interesting, down to the one episode villains and victims. The story lines are many but thoughtfully laid out and followable. Just an all around interesting show.
The only "gittin nekkid" part I've noticed was an out of focus stripper dancing in the background while Raylan was talking to someone in a bar. Nothing to get excited about but enough to earn a TV-MA rating.
I have fell victim to Olyphant…ever since Hitman, I can't get enough of him….
My husband and I love this show! We just hated to see the season end; without a doubt the best season ending I have ever seen. Does anyone know if they will have reruns? I would love my sister (another southern belle) and her family to enjoy as well. :} :} Thanks in advance.
The shows great but ahhh, the Mason-Dixion line has nothing to do with the south
Breaking Bad is good. It makes me laugh thinking that the lead actor played Tim Whatley from Seinfeld.
Been a fan of Walton Goggins since "The Shield". I'm going to have to check out this show.
Walter Goggins was also OUTSTANDING on The Shield. Can't wait for season 2!!
Being an FX show, I am sure that they will rerun the season. I know with The Shield they always ran a marathon of the previous season right before the new season began. I just don't know if I can wait that long
I know but I was thinking of an old movie Macon County. I confess to being such a Yankee that the word Mason means a jar, a secret group or the South. Please excuse my ignorance. But Dixie is the South, right?
It may be required for "sexual situations" of which there are a few. The most amusing of which being the guy who got kicked out of Boyd's commune for excessive "self-gratification"
We live in MIchigan and have fond memories of picking up TV Ontario well enough to catch Elwy's 'Saturday Night at The Movies' program. When times were rough, during the latter Ford and Carter years, here, and we couldn't afford an evening out, and the price of a baby sitter……Mr. Yost's program provided superb entertainment for 4+ hours. We are grateful for that, and wish him well wherever he is! He's a superb interviewer and asks the questions a movie fan wants answered.
Please do not confuse all of the Northeast with the cities therein. NYC, Albany, Boston and Portland, ME may be full of libtards, but the majority of the land up there is rural and inhabited by down to earth people who have the same solid values as their counterparts in the South.
This show rocks…..
Take that from a dyed in the wool, true blue, God fearing, gun owning Arkansas Mormon redneck.
You want to see what kind of guns I own, Just try sneaking in after dark….:)
I've recorded the entire series. I became a Olyphant fan after watching Deadwood. Hopefully the Liberals won't ruin this. And a word to Tim, keep your politics to yourself. Being from California, you probably arn't a conservative but you are in a conservative show. You are Ravlen Givens and Seth Bullock, not some smart ass screaming Liberal or you will loose your audience.
No doubt. He was great as Shane, all the way through to the absolutely perfect ending.
No doubt. He was perfect as Shane all the way to the absolutely perfect ending.
LOLOLOL!!!
Def my favorite show on TV right next to Burn Notice.
I was going to post that KY is not considered Southern but by people from the Northern states. Tennessee and below are Southern, we are kind of in the middle.
I'll have to check it out. Sounds like an excellent show!
Sadly, due to deployments and off-shift work, I missed the last couple seasons and it was not a show that you could afford to miss even a few episodes and still be able to keep up
Someday soon I will buy it on DVD.
Love the show. I only started watching around the last 5 episodes, but excellent. I hope they repeat the entire season.
Justified is a gem among the slop on TV. I had given up on most series until Justified began on FX. Timothy Olyphant was one of the fine cast of Deadwood series on HBO a few years ago. He is an excellent actor and will be around for many years.
I think you really ought to watch it… because the answer is built along the way…
Hadn't come across Olyphant til Justified (don't have HBO) and now I am smitten! Since I'm not a big Kelton fan, I nearly skipped this — SO glad I didn't!
And I love the show too… multidimensional characters, interesting plots, good guys make dumb choices, bad guys make good ones… and Boyd's "conversion" – they have played that beautifully!!!! did he or didn't he? can we really answer that question about ANYONE else?
And I really enjoyed one with Hitler's art – Raylan makes assumptions about the yankee art dealer that blow up in his face! along with the coniving-think-they-got-away-with-it, have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too bad girl…
