The Impossible Blindsiding of Hollywood
by Alicia ColonFor the past few years I’ve avoided watching the Academy Awards having finally gotten the message that they’re just a big fat marketing tool that have nothing to do with quality filmmaking. My self-imposed boycott of the televised event was difficult in the beginning for this diehard movie buff but became easier after the dismal fare gave me no films to root for. This year I will be watching just to witness the outcome of what has truly been an amazing year in films. Forget the two billion dollar box office for “Avatar.” No-the big question is does Hollywood have the cojones to pick “The Blind Side” as Best Picture? Nah!

C’est impossible for the far left industry to award a film that actually has a Republican lifetime NRA member as its heroine. I just recently managed to catch the film that was budgeted at $29 million and has earned over $240 million so far and was blown away by Sandra Bullock’s performance. This savvy actress supposedly took a pay cut and opted for a percentage. I hope it was for the gross as Hollywood accountants tend to bilk those who choose a percentage of the net.
Bullock has been nominated for Best Actress but if she wins I’ll be pleasantly surprised-no- I’ll be shocked. Her competitors are more in line with the ideologues who vote for their peers. There’s uber-liberal Meryl Streep whom I loved as Julia Child in “Julia & Julia”; Helen Mirren a great actress who had no problem playing lewd in her earlier career. Then there’s Gabourey Sidibe for “Precious,” who represents the victimized black girl who ironically could have used a savior like Leigh Anne Tuohy, Bullock’s real life character in “The Blind Side.”
But does Sandra Bullock really deserve to win Best Actress this year? If she’s your typical Hollywood liberal then she is the greatest actress around for her dead on portrayal of your non-stereotypical non-racist Christian Republican from the Deep South. They exist in greater numbers than what Hollywood would like us all to believe. The Christian school Wingate in “The Blind Side” is unlike any high school depicted in most movies today. “Big Mike” the lone black student is not mocked but readily accepted by the others and the Wingate faculty are truly concerned with helping him improve his grades.
Frankly all this would be hard to believe if it were not for two things; this film is based on fact and all my six children went to parochial schools where they also avoided the public school horrors that created “Precious” and the young “Big Mike.”
It boggles this conservative woman’s mind that this film was distributed by a mainstream company like Warner Brothers. There’s a rumor that conservatives exist in greater numbers since 9/11 and they are able to vote for the Oscar nominees so the proof of the pudding for that will be in the results of the balloting.
When “Saving Private Ryan” lost out to the heavily marketed, “Shakespeare in Love” the Oscars lost all my respect. Of course I had become cynical after Rod Steiger in “The Pawnbroker” lost out to Lee Marvin’s “Cat Ballou.” Hollywood placated him the next year with the Oscar for the less challenging role in “In the Heat of the Night”
After “The Sixth Sense” lost to the amoral, “American Beauty,” a film that titillated us with the obsession of statutory rape, I lost all interest in wasting my time watching overdressed, unglamorous denizens of a sick, sick town.
When I wrote for the New York Sun, I would receive invites to Oscar parties at restaurants where there would be a fun contest to guess the winners. That’s what all film buffs used to do. I would make copies of the nominees for the major prizes and amidst the popcorn and other refreshments; fun would be had by all. In a way I miss that but I do not miss the general feeling of not having any favorite to root for.
“The Blind Side” is not a great film but it is a great story which is documented at its end by the real life pictures of the characters portrayed by Bullock, Tim McGraw, Kathy Bates and others. Much as liberals and the mainstream media would like to deny, Leigh Anne Tuohy is representative of the grass root Americans marching in the tea parties i.e. kind, compassionate and tough with a “Don’t tread on me” mentality.
I think I’ll tune in at the final moments of the broadcast to see if Hollywood actually gets blindsided by decency.

Can't wait until it comes out in video. Too poor to watch movies at the theatre.
I haven't seen The Blind Side but I'm pulling for Sandra Bullock because… well, it's the principle of the thing.
But if it's not a great film, as you say, why give it the Best Picture award? I realize most "Best Picture" films are smaller indie movies that many people haven't seen (but they can still be good films) and that it wasn't always this way (Star Wars, anybody?) but popularity doesn't always = quality. In this case it does but if we were to go by box office, then Transformers II would be up for Best Picture and no one wants that!
As for the Oscars, I haven't quite disowned them like I have with the Emmys but I've always been more interested in the technical categories like visual effects (gee, I wonder what movie will win that this year), art direction, and music.
Lest we forget, the true test of a film's longevity isn't money or awards… it's time.
Time was when I never missed an Oscar nominated film in any category save documentary; now I can't remember a year in the last ten years that I've seen any of them. Why bother? I can get my propaganda gratis from the NY Times, Time, Newsweek, The WAshington Post or any of the Alphabets. I don't have to pay ten bucks to learn that I'm a knuckle-dragging, racist, Neandertal skinhead who can't see that Christians and America are more threat to the world than Muslims and Communist dictators.
I'll probably catch "The Blind Side" if it comes on "On Demand" tho' "On Demand" has precious few offerings, but these days spouse and I find most movies are hardly worth the effort of getting in the car. But you can bet if we do get in the car to cough up ten bucks plus popcorn and a drink to see a film, we will have checked on on BH beforehand to be sure our consciousness isn't going to be raised, our values mocked, our country bashed, our former president excoriated, our current president canonized, etc., etc. etc.
"“The Blind Side” is not a great film'"
So…you're saying a not-great film should get the honor of Best Picture of the year. Not because of quality, but because you agree with it's politics.
Got ya.
I really really liked "The Blind Side". But not enough to even just glance at the Oscars. My "boycott" lives on!
With 10 nominees the field is wide open but I think a trend toward the BIGGER films will begin since there are more nominees to split independent minded voters that a film with a huge block of interested parties…like say AVATAR with tons of crew and studio academy members to vote for it…will have an easier time than in the past.
More films will also benefit from being nominated too…so previously films like "Blind Side" (not that it needs it) might not get the benefit of an Oscar Nomination Marketing push.
I've seen most of the nominated films this year and don't really have a preference. I did like "Blind Side" and it's a solid movie but don't know that it's really Oscar material.
-M
I predict that "The Blind Side" won't win a single award, but that's ok. We all win because the movie got made in the first place. Great story, great characters, great message.
and that's why 'The Hurt Locker' will most likely win the Big Prize…
'Blind Side' is a much better film than it needed to be, and because it's a 'one off'- a relatively conservative film in a sea of liberalism- it has buzz. But it is still a connect the dots feel good movie, albeit a well done one.
'Avatar' just isn't that good of a movie. Spectacle, yes. Event- most certainly. But it is a 'must see' 21/2 star film.
That leaves Bigelow's intense 'Locker'. It will be the only timeless classic of the Iraq film entries. It is a net zero politically.
It will win…
If Bullock wins, she will say something disparaging against Leigh Anne Tuohy or conservatives in general. Bullock is a liberal through-and-through, and not a very good actress (just watch Demolition Man, and you will understand).
I disagree that she would snark at Leigh Anne Tuohy if she wins. I have seen her interviewed about it and she has had nothing but high praise for the woman she portrayed and even mentioned in one that LAT changed her perception of all Christians as hypocrites. I really don't think she'd bite that hand.
My family goes to one … maybe two … movies a year TOPS, precisely because, as others have stated, there are very few that are worth spending my hard-earned dollars on. The Blind Side was the single movie that we saw last year and it was WORTH IT! My son even went to see it a second time, said it was just as good that time, and immediately put the DVD on his (17th) birthday wish list. I don't see it beating out the others for Best Picture, but I hope she is seriously considered for Best Actress. I saw some interviews with the real Leigh Anne, and Bullock nailed it!
I know it would conflict with your extremist ideology to accept this, but Bullock is the overwhelming favorite to win. I would think someone who writes professionally about the ordeal would know this.
I'm in the same boat. Even if I do have the cash I'm afraid of what I'll encounter if I do go to a movie. 90% of what Hollywood produces is lowest common denominator trash. I won't waste hard earned money sorting it out.
Academy Awards are a great show of how the elites look at the rubes. Roger Ebert anyone? I haven't watched and have no interest in watching for more than a decade.
I just note 3 catastrophic failures of awards;
1. Anthony Hopkins portrayal of Corky in "Magic" not even nominated
2. Paul Newman's tour de force in "The Verdict"
3. "I Just Called to Say; I Love You" winning over "Against All Odds"
You can't fix stupid, and you shouldn't continue to be insulted willingly.
I'll believe it when I read about it the morning after.
Extremism is relative. Compared to Hollywood liberals, MSNBC, and ACORN, the author downright neutral.
In all fairness, not every Republican likes Bush. I've met plenty at Tea Parties.
So, the scene could reflect Mrs. Tuohy's real feelings about Bush II. You'll have to ask her.
I concur with your reaction about Saving Private Ryan losing out to Shakespeare in Love. One is about doing your duty no matter how impossible it may be to do so; the other is about putting on a play and giving a performance. How Hollywood it that!
Blind Side's chances are sadly nil, but Sandra Bullock's chances of walking away with an Oscar is good given her true star turn in this movie. Also, she is well liked within the industry, so this may be her year.
The decision to go to ten nominations for best picture is economically-driven:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704...
I also think it may be blow back from the exclusion of Dark Knight and WALL-E from last year's best picture noms.
Ya know you don't hear lefties saying "the fascist right". What is it with you guys and commies? There are hardly any left but they way you carry on you would think they were 80% of the population. Get a grip. As to your obsession with black people, its a true story where a Republican is portrayed as a human being. What's not to like?
Well I guess this is where Right Wing Repubs come to graze, chew some cud and bitch about liberals. This liberal Democrat loved the Blind Side. I loved the book and I loved the movie. I have liberals in my family and I have far right Repubs. I love them all. I love this movie because it treats the characters as human beings and not stereotypes.
Leann Touhy is Tea Party grass roots? The woman is a millionaire. I thought the Tea Party represented average folks.
The commie left has for decades now had a alliance with Blacks in America
I would say they had an alliance with the elite, modern-liberal, African American leadership, who in turn bring out the vote, and in turn get a seat at the democratic power table.
I've often contemplated the modern liberal opinion of African Americans. All I can come up with some twisted version of the White Man's Burden.
Bush has three things that I supported him for, Sam Alieto, John Roberts, and refusal to feed the US military to the dogs in Iraq and Afghanistan in the name of sagging poll numbers.
Other than that, I only voted for him once in 2004 and that was because of Kerry, not Bush.
I have distanced myself from the Oscars since 1980 when Peter Sellers (1925-1980) in "BEING THERE" was skipped over for Dustin Hoffman (1937- ) in "Kramer vs Kramer". Then in "Rainman" 1988 Hoffman gets the award for playing an autistic savant!
So average folks can't go to school, marry the right person, work hard, support your family, go to church, stay married, and become a millionaire?
I don't think she's a trust fund millionaire like the Kennedys,
I believe average regular people can become millionaires (at least in the past they could)
I did appreciate "Slumdog Millionaire" (2008) for showing how heartless blind charity can be.
Agreed about the connection between Blacks and elites for the purpose of political power. However, the Blacks on the street are their muscle. I remember a 1968 meeting of the Peace & Freedom Party here in SF when Paul Jacobs (a well known commie) was trying for the nomination.
The black guy in front of me at the mic began his comments with, "I'm live in Chicago and where I come from, dey call me da flame!!"
If B. Hussein O. Jr. gets shot, it isn't Alec Baldwin or Matt Damon or Susan Sarandon who the Koreans are going to have to be shooting the gas cans and matches out of the hands of.
This situation is very Muslim. In other words, no Black leadership has ever solved Black inner city problem because they don't want to. Just as Islam refuses to educate its populace because it would never be able to contain them under the Mullahs nor use them as goon squads, B. Hussein O. Jr., Jessie, Al, et cetera have never rolled up their sleeves and performed the hard work.
The point is that Bullock is up for Best Actress, not 'Blind Side' as the best picture….
In many ways, the Black problem is like global warming in this sense: it is not about Blacks, but consolidating and maintaining power.
If Black leadership really had balls, it would organize to take control of 10 square blocks of the most badass inner city in the country. Then they would announce that no kids in this area are going to get the crap beat out of them going back and forth to and from or in school. Our women are not going to be spiritually nor physically raped. Drugs are verboten. If you break these rules, you are going to have to deal with me, not the nice white man.
After they had worked out the nuts and bolts they would figure out how to export their sucesses.
most millionaires here in the states are self-made small business people. they started small, worked their butts off, save their money and are reaping the rewards (until the Obamination and his ilk put them out of business)
many of us tea partiers, whether rich or not, would identify with her.
"For the past few years I've avoided watching the Academy Awards…"
I haven't seen an Academy Awards for the last 20 years at least. It's such a turn-off that to do so required no concious effort on my part to avoid it. Avoiding the Academy Awards has come just as naturally as breathing and sleep. Which brings me to my point: Will you or anyone else at Big Hollywood be producing a list of conservative's choices for the Academy Awards, maybe this could be an annual thing just like the Oscars? Perhaps after we've all had a chance to comment on the selections such a list could be created. Probably many conservatives appreciate the skill of Hollywood film-makers, of course it's just the politics that messes up the Oscars. Wouldn't it be great to filter out the politics and simply celebrate the truly great practitioners of the craft. I imagine someone on this site has already done this and I just missed it, if so would someone please post a link.
The real school is Briarcrest located in suburbs of Memphis. It is a great school that my nephew attends.

The basic party line since the fall of the Soviet Union is that communism no longer exists because it is a proven failed ideology. Europeans, especially, mouth this nonsense. So when you ask what is it with us guys and the commie, check out the Victoria Jackson Open Thread below.
As for Blacks, I am not complaining about The Blind Side’s story. That is you changing the subject. I am just tired of liberals perpetually forcing that subject down our throats. Nowadays I have to listen every day to bossy, threatening Black pigden and pretend that it is acceptable English.
What I am concerned about is living here in a very mixed neighborhood of SF, the other day while I was out doing my laundry, two 15 to 18 year old banger-wannabee punks slowed down in their car and began excitedly laughing and pointing out their windows at the laundromat. Maybe it was innocent and maybe they were casing the neighborhood. They were surely out of place.
Why do punks break and enter laundromats? Just ask Willy Horton.
Now I have to think about whether or not I need to start packing again.
shhh you're going to get attacked for failure to rabidly agree.
You say "Blindside" isn't a good movie? Do you think "The Hurt Locker" is? Watch the Academy Awards, I don't even go to the movies anymore. I have to admit, it's fun to see the hideous dresses the actresses wear. What were they thinking?
Unfortunately, movies have a strong impact on our society. Remember "Eight Mile Island" about the Nuclear Plant? No plants opened since then.
Remember, Utopian not Realism is a Liberal characteristic. We have to fight back hard. Vote. Get involved. No more Rino Republicans. Congrats to Gov Perry.
The Left isn't giving up without a fight. I saw bits and pieces of "Casino Jack" which stars Kevin Spacey as Jack Abramoff. It's partisan for the sake of being partisan. Over the credits they show footage of Abramoff introducing Tom DeLay to a bunch of the most stereotypical dorky college republicans.
follow me twitter. i'm going to tweet my little sneak previews.

Yeah, like not-great films get Best Picture of the Year because of THEIR politics EVERY year.
True to a certain extent, but if you can name me an Oscar-winning "liberal" film that's as bad as Blind Side I'll be rather humbled
I have a little game I play where I read Big Hollywood/Government/Journalism threads and take count on how quickly it takes for the true face of this stuff to appear.
EIGHT REPLIES IN is a new record
you know what then, more power to her for being a liberal and still playing a conservative well.
I think you were referring to The China Syndrome, not 8 Mile Island. 8 Mile Island is a movie about Eminem investigating a spooky insane asylum in Boston Harbor starring Leo DiCaprino:-)
In all fairness, no amount of good acting could have saved demolition man.
You're creeping me out.
HAH! Awesome!
Part of the aversion to nuclear plants wasn't the movie but the fact that the _real_ Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania partially melted down and released radiation into the air. (I remember it VERY well, even though I was a kid) The movie became a megahit because it was released so close to the accident. While the movie certainly helped spook people, they were much more spooked by the real thing.
It doesn't matter how much money you have. You can still believe in the constitution. Class Warfare is a divide and conquer tactic of the Left.
Yeah, I know.
This is a new tact and quite effective — a direct quote from the source eh? If she had said she thinks Bush is great and saved us from the terrorists, do you think it would have been included in the film? No. I didn't think so.
She was talking about Bullock getting Best Actress, not Best Picture.
You'd do well to research that remark. Three-Mile Island didn't melt down even partially nor did it release radiation in the air or anywhere else!
It became a mega hit and spooked people, but it wasn't true and put nuclear power plants back for decades.
Reality it ain't.
I couldn't help but laugh at Entertainment Weekly devoting an entire article to picking at various supposed liberties the movie takes, either from the book or from the actual true story. I doubt they had such issues with "A Beautiful Mind" or any other Best Picture Nominees that have tweaked the narrative a bit. But for some reason, "The Blind Side" was quite troubling to them.
I saw the blindside and was surprised at how good the film was, I was expecting Facing the Giants and got much more. The idea that this film can get discredited for one little shot at Bush, and believe me, it was insignificant, is ridiculous. If we continue to discard conservative films that edify our values over such picayune issues, producers will learn that we are too fickle a market to be trusted. Another example would be Christians who called for the boycott of "End of the Spear" because one of the actors was gay, something the producers didn't know until filming had started. If we want to see our values in film we need to support the films that honor them, not pick them to pieces.
It's because people pile false accolades on the movie in regards to it being "honest" when really it's not. This movie isn't a true representation of middle America, just the fantasy people have their heads. The true story IS inspiring, the problem people like the dude at EW (his name escapes me) have with it is how it makes Michael Oher look like a giant simpleton and it amps up the actions of Leigh Anne Tuohy from a good-hearted real woman into a full-fledged saint that only exists in movies. This isn't some sort of partisan vendetta, certain critics always come out on the offense against movies they feel are mediocre that have received accolades anyway. Liberal critics get caught up in stupid crap movies like CRASH and AMERICAN BEAUTY the same way conservative critics (like the ones here, I'm a conservative too, so I understand) get caught up in ones that agree with their worldview or agenda, even though they might not be very good movies.
I doubt if she would say something disparaging against Tuohy. First of all, why would she agree to play her if she didn't like the woman? Bullock is a big enough star that she didn't HAVE to take the role just to keep working. She could have selected another project. As it is, Bullock is getting hammered on the lefty movie blogs. They keep going on about how terrible it will be if The Blind Side wins any awards.
"You never go full-blown retard. Check it out. Dustin Hoffman, 'Rain Man,' look retarded, act retarded, not retarded. Counted toothpicks, cheated cards. Autistic, sho'. Not retarded. You know Tom Hanks, 'Forrest Gump.' Slow, yes. Retarded, maybe. Braces on his legs. But he charmed the pants off Nixon and won a ping-pong competition. That ain't retarded. Peter Sellers, "Being There." Infantile, yes. Retarded, no. You went full retard, man. Never go full retard. You don't buy that? Ask Sean Penn, 2001, "I Am Sam." Remember? Went full retard, went home empty handed…"
~Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr. in TROPIC THUNDER)
Producers have learned that conservatives don't stand up for their values. That's why continue to bash and snark at us. Throw us a little bone so we'll spend our money on their films, but make sure to do it in a way to let all their friends know it's all a scam.
BTW – not all conservatives are Christians nor even particularly religious.
Give it to "The Blind Side" only because it is a conservative movie.
Great movie, great cast and a GREAT GREAT STORY…. amazing, to know that this still can happen in the United States… the family was interviewed by Huckabee and I had to see the movie after seeing the Mother and Daughter interviewed.. I hope and pray that Sandra Bullock wins!!!
If those who made "The Blind Side" really wanted to make a statement about American values they wouldn't have added an anti-Bush snark. That was the signal to their real friends that this film isn't serious and was made to add a little something to their bottom lines so they can make more films that trash our country.
Let film makers who are at least honest about their hate for us win the prize.
There are films worth seeing, "The Young Victoria" was a delight.
i still cant get over sean penn & his communist comrades. so i will not watch. let me know how it goes!
When you've got leftwing loonies like George Clooney,Alec Baldwin, Ed Assner,Sean Penn, Susan sarandon, etc. winning awards just becuse they're pro-leftist, then you've lost me as an Oscar watcher. "Star trek" sold more DVD's than "UP",but guess who gets an Oscar? Ed Assner,no doubt (the extra s added how I regard him, not a misspelling). Even the People's Choice Awards are biased! The Nielsens rate "NCIS" as one of the top 10 shows and not "30 Rock", yet guess who wins again? It's not "NCIS"! The loony who said he'd move to france if George bush was elected,of course! Guess who won't be watching this one either?
It is available for pre-order at amazon. It will be shipped March 23. $16.99.
The Tea Parties are about upholding the Constitution. Millionaires can be average people who want to uphold the Constitution just as well as a middle-class or poor average person. It has absolutely nothing to do with how much money you have.
We used to watch the Oscars every year, just like you. The whole Shakespeare in Love thing was a travesty, but it was either that same year or the next year when Elia Kazan won his Oscar and half the audience sat on their hands. That upset my mom, but we slugged it out for another few years. When Roman Polanski won his Oscar and got a standing ovation, we turned it off and haven't turned it back on since.
I didn't say it wasn't good. I said it wasn't a great movie. However It is a great story. I don't expect it to win Best Picture, however, but the odds are better for Bullock because she's quite popular.
There are very few great movies made today and I don' t think any of the current nominees fall into that category.
Twenty-five years ago I saw a bumper sticker that said "Kill Your Television." So I did, and have never been sorry. Haven't been in a theater either. Why am I commenting here? What do I know? Only that my life is far richer for having avoided Hollywood's brainwashing machine for all these years.
"The Dark Knight" had a brilliant script and critics and audiences loved it, but it somehow got snubbed at the Oscars (only managing a post-humous supporting actor nom for Heath Ledger). To me, that was the last straw.
Any prestige they might have held in the past is a joke.
Also, why don't they ever nominate any apolitical movies for Best Picture? If a movie is well-crafted and well executed, does it NEED to have a political or social message to be nominated? I guess it does, but it SHOULDN'T. When did it go from celebrating the craft of filmmaking to seeing who tooted their political horn the loudest?
I can interpret that a couple of different ways. What do you specifically mean?
Ya know you don't hear lefties saying "the fascist right".
Ha……you don't watch MSNBC or ever listen to Speaker Pelosi do you!
Post would make a world of sense and seem genuine if you had left off the first sentence, and ended the second paragraph with a period after "…have to deal with me."
I volunteered for a black conservative running against a liberal balck incumbent in Florida in a mintority district in 1994. We received intel from her primary opponent that 10 precints had 99% voter turnout and voted 95% for the incumbent. Each precint was of HUD housing projects who received their grants from the congresswoman when she was working as a state legislature. On election day I worked as a poll watcher for my campaign and saw how they do it. Voting was in a Fire Station.
Their poll observer (each candidate got one) arrived at 9:00 am. Took the voting sheet and spent a half hour writing down the names of everyone who had not voted. At 10 am the Free Rides Bus shows up driven by the HUD landlord who takes the list and says "I'll make sure my N-words go vote. He was black I am white but I was still offended at the way he sneered it,. This went on until 5:00 pm when a Greyhound bus full of people park a block down the street where I can' see it. As over 150 people poured in someone over the Fire station intercom said "VOTE FOR CHLES" three times.
It is not Blacks. It is the race hustlers that claim to be their leaders.
As an aside the reason the candidate tried to run in this district was due to three factors:
1) the rising sentiment in 94 by the contract with America
2) the congresswoman had pissed off her own party with corruption and they sent someone from washington as a primary challenge.
3) The candidate new that Blacks in the south may state they never would vote for a Republican still had extremely conservative views on Religion, Abortion and School Choice was a big issue. The district was 40% Balck but 75% Democrat. The women had completely alienated all white voters. The candidate thought that if he could sway just 20% of the black vote he could win. It was a close election and i still believe to this day if it were not for the voter fraud and intimidation he would have won.
Robert with all due respect you are attributing to innocent black people what is the fault of the government. Ask yourself this question, if welfare roles are 40% black 40% white and 20% other races how can a welfare project be 100% black. This is because in this instance liberals (the lot of them) are OK wth Racial Segregation. Hey don't worry though they'll be bussed to school where they can form their own little click so they can see how rich white fold live.
I audited HUD housing and one of the compliance steps was to ensure anyone taking governemnt aid was not saving any money. Men would willingly leave the house and divorce their wives because the government would pay more to take care of them than they could make. The landlord told me I should test to see if husbands were secretly giving money under the table to X'wives and children. Only a democrat could make it illegal for a man to help his family and then brag what a service they did for them.
Sandra Bullock could wear a chicken costume over a fat suit and i will still stair at her.
Lord of the Rings? Chicago? Gladiator? Slumdog Millionaire (unless you think that saying poverty is bad is a political statement)?
After the HUAC and McCarthy era ended, the commies came back and hellywood was one of their centers of activity. These progressives will never stop until they take over the world or until they are all gone. They are the western equivalent of the islamofascists, hence their shared desire to wipe out Christianity.
Like the broom that Mickey Mouse could not kill because the splinters kept becoming new brooms, so too arise these hellywood progressives from the rotting corpses of their fathers.
It's interesting that early Christians considered movies anathema. And early on, TV was designated "The Vast Wasteland."
Saw both of them, Blindside was pure sappy feel good stuff with some Hollywood race angle while Avatar was utterly beautiful as well as a technical breakthrough. Are you trying to tell me that the Hollwyood politburo has been relegating Bullock to B movie hell in low budget Eastern European studios or something for the last decade? I wasn't even aware of Bullocks politics until a breity tried to falsely imply she was geting slighted for it
Elites, commie, african americans, some great conspiracy. yup clear thinking from a Ski
It seems that every breity clones' brainfart always falls into the faux populist morality theme about how godly, goodly little Americans are being mocked, sneered at and (worst) ignored by the evil elites. Meanwhile the same people praise and knock themselves out to be successful in the same system so they can join some sort of elite when they make it. But they figure if they still wear a baseball cap, drink Bud, say "praise the lord", drive a useless oversized SUV, watch NFL with beer and chips they won't loose their faux middle American roots.
Actually they did and that is a standard sort of article. Only a true breity clone would suppose there is some conspiracy at work.
Utter rubbish, the Dark Knight was a waste of celluloid especially compared to the first Bale one. They probably had Ledger killed to boost sales. What the eff does the DK being snubbed at the Oscars have to do with politics anyways? Oh right, this is a breity blog so everything has some evil leftist conspiracy being uncovered motif to it.
How about "The Wrestler"
I have a friend from school who is a lawyer. HE had a probono client. An elderly black women who until recently had lived all her life on welfare. She owned a home I beleive through Habitat for Humanity. She had a problem becasue the bank was failin to recognize her payments. The lawyer told her to get a bank account becuase the problem was the bank was not used to handling these payments through money order and was screwing them up. She refused deathly afraid stating she could never have a bank account. He wasflabbergasted as to why. I explained it to him. It was becasue the government hired auditors like me to go in and find out she had money so she could be punished.
Think about this. Every person you live with is the same race. You are poor. The system is set up to keep you saving money and your dad was forced out of your home. How hard is it to understand poor black kids grow up with a chip on their shoulder. It is not their fault. It is not societies fault.
IT is the GD COCKROACHES who run the Democratic party and have had unchallenged sway over this issue since the Worst Society programs of Lindon Baines Johnston.
So, let me get this straight: you're sneering at us and mocking us as you chastize us for feeling sneered at and mocked? Thanks.
I am sneering at this phony populist outrage, along with the usual hints of some non-existent conspiracy evinced by this writer and most of her dittoheads. I realize this type of rant is a staple of Breitbart's monstrous paranoid ego.
I didn't realize I was part of any elite, I am at the bottom of the food chain like the rest of you, shopping at Walmarts and keeping my 14 year old car on the road with home repairs. From where I am sitting, Breity is elite, an elite of the worst sort with no class or grace.
You have to be more specific.
Do you really mean that the post doesn't make sense or is lie of some sort or that it doesn't conform to your version of politically correct? That's not meant as an insult.
Anthony Hopkins in "Remains of the day"!
He's a great actor.
BTW, I am PsychicDiceArt. IntenseDebate is making me sign in every 24 hours and I don’t always remember what time the day before I signed in.
I have read all your posts and will answer them here. I appreciate all the time you have taken, writing out your examples.
I agree that the government, particularly the Dems, have contributed to the destroying of the black family. Buckley and his writers in the National Review made sense 35 years ago and you do today. This doesn’t mean though that anyone was consciously trying to victimize them.
LBJ (and I remember cheering the night that he announced on live TV that he would not run again) was fighting the Viet Nam War. Here at home, blacks who were heavily influenced by commies were rioting or threatening to. A figure I once heard, but never confirmed is that before it was over about 1,000 cops and 1,000 blacks had been killed in violent confrontations with each other. Black leadership was demanding that their constituents get paid off, hence the welfare state.

I believe that now the only way that can happen is if, as described below, black leadership block by block in inner cities actually does what Cosby says to do and as they work out methods that actually educate and civilize their children that they export those methods to the rest of the black communities.
As for the N-word, I believe that phrase Do you remember where it started? As I recall it OJ nearly cut the head off his wife, a white woman, (common sense, not legal version) and Johnny Cochran during the trial coined it. I could be wrong on this, but I had never heard it before.
Does anyone else get the absurdity? While helping a black man literally get away with murder, another black man instructs Whites on how to censor themselves, as if the black lawyer was some sort of moral center?

And then, the "N-word" born out of the slaughter of a White woman becomes the standard.
As far as I am concerned the N-word is at its heart a First Amendment issue, especially since it has now led to the censoring the words retard and midget. Who knows where this will end? As far as I am concerned, if it is the perfect description, someone has to call a spade a spade.
And I stand by my original statement in these posts which was censored here: if The Blind Side had been made about a white kid, it would never be nominated for the Academy Award.
I don't remember much bru-ha-ha over "A Beautiful Mind", even though it was much different from the book in some key ways. I think I read one comment – but then I don't read much entertainment news so I might have missed it. I have read some negitive comments regarding the Blind Side story – that the Touheys (I know I'm spelling that wrong) were motivated more by football then charity, I believe the Creator can figure out how a person can have some blessings while they are giving. What I mean is, why can't they be into both things? Actually, that's a harder way to live, walking the fine line between passion and obssession and giving and receiving.
I am glad Shakespere in Love won. It is about love. Yes, it had too much sex in it. The New Testament is filled with references about love and says that the Jesus Christ, the son of God draws or wooes those who will believe, to God. It is a romance. of sorts. Saving Private Ryan was very bloody and violent. I would have seen it except for the buckets of "blood" in it and my husband (who did see it) said there was one scene that he said was like Satan himself had whispered into the ear of the director and told him what to do – it was that evil. He didn't tell about the scene. I would rather not know.

Another problem that still exists today is that black cultural values (beginning with the Stone Age slaves who were originally brought here) have never been the same as whites. No black civilization has ever produced monogamy. After WWII, illegitimacy was at 25% (about 12% for whites). Today it has ballooned to three times that. Although it is a politically correct, heart-felt platitude to admire integration, I do not want black kids (70% of whom don’t have fathers, and even then probably not monogamous ones) at my family’s Fourth of July picnic suggesting to white kids that they screw their brains out before they are 16.
I don’t believe that government will ever be able to solve the problem. Cosby has correctly pointed out that instilling values in children requires putting bodies on them. He means that adults with values have to get close to them and teach them civilization’s boundaries and advantages.

There was talk on this site (an article even), right before nominations were announced, that "Up" and "The Blind Side" would not be nominated for Best Picture.
The Best Actress race is the only category this year that isn't a lock. It's between Bullock and Streep (no, Mirren has absolutely no chance, so I'm guessing I wasn't clueing in on your sense of humor). It could go either way. Streep has been nominated something like 11 times since her last win (15 total?). Many believe she's overdue. (how many actors have had 11 subsequent nominations and not won?). They were also blown away by her performance. The success of "The Blind Side" came out of nowhere and Bullock, in a rare star turn, elevated a mess of a movie (based on a wonderful story) to be near watchable. Arguments can be made for either one of them winning and, frankly, either one of them deserve it, as far as their careers are concerned.
But, if you're going to go performance only and forget the careers, it's Gabby Sidibe all the way. (I haven't seen Mirren's "The Last Station")
And, if you're going to forget the Oscars and actually name the best leading female performance of the year (heck the best acting performance even), it's Tilda Swinton in "Julia."
That's acting.
MovieBob, you're awesome.
I'm misunderstanding you. Which phrase?
In what universe was "The Wrestler" A.) political and B.) bad?
Sorry, I was typing and reading too quickly. I meant to leave out the words, "I believe that pharase" That sentence should read, "As for the N-word, do you remember where it started?"
Who's the ideologue here? Apparently the author of this article is: I was at the Awards tonight, and I was proud to see Sandra Bullock win AND I consider myself a political progressive. As a progressive, my thinking can contain that apparent contradiction. Apparently, most conservatives can't. 'Nuff said.
