Your Not-So-Ultimate Golden Globes Wrap-up
by Andy LevySome quick thoughts on the snoozefest known as the Golden Globes:
The big question, of course, is always how the Globes will affect the Oscar voters. My guess – somewhere ranging from “not at all,” to “completely and utterly.” And I’m kind of an expert on these things, so you can quote me on that.
There was pretty much no political posturing, except for Laura Dern, who bless her heart just couldn’t help herself. Dern of course won Best Supporting Actress for the HBO film Republicans Bad, Democrats Good. Or some such.
Kate Winslet winning two acting awards is pretty damn impressive, if you’re the kind of person who finds that sort of thing impressive. If you’re not, you probably weren’t impressed at all.
Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle looks an awful lot like Bradley Whitford as Danny Tripp in Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip. (Other than the five of you who actually watched Studio 60, you’ll have to google to see just how dead on I am here.) (Sorry, the four of you. I’m actually the fifth.)
After American Beauty and Revolutionary Road, I think it’s fair to ask: what the hell did the suburbs ever do to Sam Mendes?
Shouldn’t Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull disqualify Steven Spielberg from receiving any lifetime achievement awards for awhile?
Ricky Gervais should be hosting every awards show Hollywood produces.
How much hell to pay will there be for The Wrestler director Darren Aronofsky flipping off Mickey Rourke? And I guess we’re now saying “balls” on network prime time television!
It was nice to see Mickey Rourke win Best Actor. Which I guess was the whole point of giving him the award.
Colin Farrell was a jittery winner. Question of the day: nerves, or meth?
Farrell also said – with all the fake modesty he could muster – that the votes must have been counted in Florida. Nothing like an eight-year-old callback!
And lastly: For this I missed 24?

So I missed nothing then? Good, good.
BTW, I suspect the answer to why Colin Farrell is jittery is probably meth.
kinda happy that Farrell won. dont think he knows what meth is.
kinda worried about Sacha Baron Cohen’s career after blasting Madonna.
No ’spoiler’ warning!? How dare you! You are banished to an area away from everyone else. Kind of like… you on ‘Red Eye.’ Actually, am passing on the Golden Globes for I believe the 21st year. The last time was a fraternity hazing incident. I’ll never forgive the bros at DTD for that one. At least it wasn’t the Tony’s. Watching these celebs take themselves this seriously is as grating as listening to a sitcom laugh track. I can’t wait til the ratings gets so bad they carry it on E! Thanks for watching for me (us)! And welcome to the Big Hollywood family. Which means you can’t date anyone here. That would be like incest.
Balls is the word of the day. I didn’t even see of the show. I only turned on in time to see the british actress cry, and Mickey speak of balls. At first I was very concerned I missed an important event, but thankfully I was able to find this article. I now know my time was not wasted. Thanks Andy.
Please, Indy IV was not that bad at all. If any film should disqualify Spielberg from Lifetime Achievement Awards, it should be War of the Worlds.
I still hope The Dark Knight will win Best Picture and Best Director (it has Best Supporting Actor all but locked up), but it looks like Slumdog Millionaire has gotten a major boost
Colin Farrel’s reaction was purely geniune.
Slumdog is winning everything. If they win the Oscars, will that mean Bollywood is going to be king of hollywood or will Hollywood see that and not vote for it?
And kinda worried about Sasha Baron Cohen’s career after blasting Madonna.
It’s about movies? I thought it was just an event for female celebrities to show off their, you know, globes.
Andrew, does that mean that Andy can’t date posters? Because…well, even though I am married and Catholic, that knowledge would still break my heart.
So, incest, no—-nepotism, yes? Yes, when you are related to someone as talented as Orson Bean.
Greg Gutfield & Andy Levy….Andrew Klavan and Orson Bean….Big Hollywood is like Christmas in January (not to be confused with the great Sturges comedy, Christmas in July).
I must question your use of the terms … winning two acting awards … nice to see Mickey Rourke win … was a jittery winner.
I thought the Hollywoodies long ago decided to say, “The award goes to so-and-so” because saying “winner” hurt the feelings of all the big losers.
Are there really any
feelingslosers in Hollywood? Just askin’.I must question your use of the terms … winning two acting awards … nice to see Mickey Rourke win … was a jittery winner.

Are there really any
feelingslosers in Hollywood? Just askin’.Right on, Andy Levy!
I would be more impressed with Winslet’s wins if she would stop making such Oscar bait films. There are more Holocaust related films released in December than at any other time.
Yay, Andy’s at Big Hollywood! Looking forward to more posts from this Ellen Degeneres lookalike.
Oh God, I can’t believe I’m one of those four who know what you mean about Danny Boyle. Not only that, but I even THOUGHT THE SAME THING.
Yeah, I had the awards on in the background, though somehow missed the conversation on balls. Not only can you say balls now, you can even say “dick” (as an insult, at least). Did we already know that? ‘Cause I sure didn’t.
Studio 60 was a truly fantastic show. Anyone who hasn’t seen it should watch it on Hulu. Only after reading everything on Big Hollywood of course! And while you’re there catch full episodes of Red Eye.
Also – Andy, I’m surprised you stopped twittering long enough to write this!
It’s okay Andy. I’ll give you the entire season’s plot for 24:
Jack is not allowed to torture the terrorists, instead they are given lawyers on the spot… and refuse to answer questioning. In the last episode, the world blows up.
I kept clicking back & forth from 24 to the Globes and back again. After a certain point I started wondering what Kiefer Sutherland was winning at the Globes and what kind of bomb was about to go off under the stage.
Actually I was glad for Kate Winslet. I haven’t seen Revolutionary Road and probably won’t. But she was just superb in The Reader. Like everyone else I was left scratching my head as to why she won Best Supporting Actress in a movie in which she was the lead actress, but hey, whatever.
Oh and I think that was no crankster, that was Colin Ferrell being Colin Ferrell. Very genuine. And he deserved his win, his turn in In Bruges was excellent.
With the success of Slumdog Millionaire, does this mean we need a Big Bollywood website?
The only award worth mentioning was the one to Heath Ledger– and I didn’t even see that on the show. I read about it. Hope they don’t ignore “The Dark Knight” at the Oscars.
Because of being busy doing stuff(and already Hollywood runs my life, unfortunately, right now there may be a possibility of getting employed at a movie theatre) I missed the Golden Globes. And yet, I must say, after getting a link from a fellow Conservative who lives on the “Left Coast” that this blog is probably more enjoyable than many of the political stutterings that go on at an annual Academy Awards/awards show Best Documentary motionfest. Thank you, and I shall hope to contribute to the comments section more and more(especially bashing the rabid comformist Lefties)
And also being a guy whose love of arts and politics parallels so much that I do take politics in the town of Hollywood more seriously than I did(ask me about Bowling for Columbine). I wish that there was a competing core of influence where all of the Right-Wingers desert Hollywood, like the early film people did to get away from Thomas Edison, and move to a location in a red State. New York and Hollywood have been for too long major areas for filming. Why not Nebraska instead for many movies?
Anyways, back to what I originally wanted to say, I liked many of the movies that were made this year but didn’t get to go see The Changeling or In Bruges. I can still try to get them on DVD, as that is my new hobby.
BTW, The Naked Spur is probably my favorite film and a great Classic Stewart/Mann Western which has nothing to do with any objectionables.
Good post Andy, but those awards shows, created to celebrate good looking successful people who have an easy job, just so their egos can grow bigger, kill me. Most of us have to work tomorrow. Most of THEM will be sleeping in, with a hangover no less. You should have stuck with 24 instead tonight, it was excellent. I thought maybe the producers were under pressure from Fox to tone it down, but I’m glad they didn’t. This could be on hell of a season of 24! Bauer for President!
Reading about Kate Winslet winning two Golden Globes was the only thing about this year’s awards which surprised me. It’s not everyday you come across an actor or actress winning two awards in the same ceremony for acting performances. Congrats anyway to Kate Winslet and all those who deserved their awards, especially Heath Ledger (his Joker surpassed Jack Nicholson’s, in my opinion).
Well that must mean that Kate may become like Juliette Moore who was nominated for two acting performances, if I can recall, at the Oscars one of which was Far From Heaven. But I may be wrong
The double nominee thing has happened several times. With Julianne Moore, Holly Hunter, Cate Blanchett, Emma Thompson, and a few others. No one has ever WON them both before.
Brilliant Andy Levy doing award show wrap ups….Big Hollywood just gets better and better. Hopefully you’ll continue having Andy doing this because it will definitely make award season much more bearable!
Snoozefest is exactly right; Kate Winslet and Steven Spielberg’s speeches are the embodiment of that sentiment.
Steven Spielberg I think was trying to weave an inspiring story as to why he became a director but it just fell flat. In fact, if he told this exact same story to pitch it for a bio-pic to a studio I think they would politely thank him for coming, utter the infamous Hollywood adage “don’t call us, we’ll call you” and show him the door.
And both Kate Winslet’s speeches were entirely charmless, narcissistic and over acted. I can’t remember the last time I so despised an acceptance speech – oh just thought of one…..Julie Roberts, oh just thought of another one….Sally Field…and Laura Dern….– but I digress.
Best acceptance speech/moment goes to Christopher Nolan for Heath Ledger. It was beautiful, simple and sincere.
I saw Slumdog Millionaire and it was quite good(even if they reversed the roles of the Hindus and the Muslims in one spot in this movie) owing itself to the optimism of an everyman who can reach for the stars because of everyday events. That premise, based on a novel that I haven’t read, is actually very enlivening towards people like me who want to dream in the impossible. There is of course a kind of dark side to the film that turned it into a Gangster movie but it only gave it more character.
Instead of Big Bollywood(Bollywood is already huge), I would rather have a collection of all of the Merchant-Ivory films. I loved two of their movies(Room with a View and Howard’s End) and while watching a small documentary on their filmography I got a very big appetite for buying all of the movies they made. Unfortunately I don’t have a very big memory sometimes and forget if they sell any Merchant-Ivory collections(which includes the earliest films all Bollywood types) at any mainstream stores.
Live-Blogging The Awful Golden Globes…
By Nikki Finke
1/11/09
“It’s a completely meaningless awards show by a scandal-riddled organization on a network desperate for any kind of ratings. Yet here I am live-blogging the Golden Globes held by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and broadcast on NBC. The reason is because, over the years, Jack Nicholson has mooned the audience, Jim Carrey has talked out of his butt, Christine Lahti was locked in the bathroom, and other unscripted weirdness occurs at this intimate dinner. Including 1982’s low point when Pia Zadora’s husband bought her best “New Star Of The Year”. But that’s the perennial problem with the Golden Globes: they have zero integrity…
Come for the cynicism. Stay for the subversion.[...]”

Ms. Finke could be a good contributor to Big Hollywood, if available/interested. Hmm?
Geez…I hope Big Hollywood doesn’t turn into a lovefest for Bollywood.
i agree with you, TV’s Andy Levy, about Ricky Gervais (“Ricky Gervais should be hosting every awards show Hollywood produces.”) Gervais definitely is not intimidated by the denizens of Tinseltown. How many presenters do you know who could get away with Holocaust humor? I can’t think of one.
However, i disagree with your assessment of Ferrell’s acceptance speech. (“Colin Farrell was a jittery winner. Question of the day: nerves, or meth?”) I propose the youthful man articulated better than anyone tonight. How many actors do you know who could come up with “wax poetry about love?” The Irish actor lives up to his literary romantic heritage. As for was it “nerves, or meth?” Low blow, Leeeevy. Colin even noted his wiping his nose was not from what one might think, citing that was years ago. Give the man his credit due.
The problem with Gervais as Oscar host is that Americans need to find out who he is before he can host it.
Slumdog – yuck
Rourke – cool
Winslet 1 – very good, but Hathaway is better
Winslet 2 – haven’t seen, hard to beat Cruz
Ledger – yep
Hawkins – good, but not much range
Farell – not bad at all
AETIUS – good, but Levy better.
I think Colin Farrell is in AA now, so maybe he looked jittery because it was the first time he wasn’t drunk off his ass while collecting an award?
TV’s Andy Levy on the interwebs eh?
What’s next, land’s kittens in the sea?
Thank you for watching so we don’t have to.
I read this and two thoughts came to mind. I had no idea the golden Globes were on. And Didn’t this Nation suspend it’s Hollywood award ceremonies during WW2? I’m pretty sure the Oscars were.
Spur-
Excellent suggestion about a new geographical movie center to promote some new ideas. I understand that there is a real push to get a studio to relocate to the Metro Detroit area (my home).
Now before you guys get all nasty (for some reason Motown brings out the snobbishness in those who decry snobbishness) think about the area a little bit. Yeah we got the gritty inner city (Detroit, Pontiac and Flint) but we also have the upscale fou-fou Brimingham, the John Hughes-esque suburbs (old money Grosse Pointe, noveau riche Bloomfield Hills) and plenty of working class to upper middle class environments. Add to that Ann Arbor and many idyllic small old towns and amazing exterior locations in the north of the state.
What really makes it great though, is that there is a real DIVERSITY of thought in this area. Michigan is (to borrow your terminology) a purple state. All spectrum of ideology are represented.
So there’s your new movie-making hub, the greater Detroit area. Plenty of infrastructure and available (cheap) space.
Say Yes to Michigan (no, I am in no way related to Jeff Daniels).
when are the ratings for this show released? I tried to watch but for the 3 seconds I had the program on, I saw so many “stars” I couldn’t stomach so I clicked.
At least Ledger’s drug use was good for something.
The best moment was when Winslet, humming the Titantic soundtrack and half-cocked on Jack Daniels, told all the people who called her fat to go watch Crash.
These rediculous award shows are a waste lets just watch something else other then these rediculous award shows
>>Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle looks an awful lot like Bradley Whitford as Danny Tripp in Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip. >>
Which is different from his look in Billy Madison how? Uh-oh, now I’ve really outed myself.
Why not Nebraska instead for many movies?
Weather. Nebraska is only habitable about three months out of the year. Which is two more than Michigan, at least.
When I was in film school, we watched a documentary about the Golden Globes and the complete sham that they are. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association? Give me a break. It’s a group of 90 +/- freelance journalists who have been given a tad too much power.

There blows my Mickey Rourke 9 1/2 weeks fantasy. God he looks horrid. This, a week after blowing my Andy Levy fantasy, (cause he’s in a relationship) Damn, damn, damn damn.
Andy Levy: And lastly: For this I missed 24?
If you’re reading this half-way across the Atlantic en route to London Heathrow, you can see eps 1 & 2 tonight at 9pm GMT on Sky.
And still do Red Eye in a studio link from Sky, which is only 3 miles from Heathrow!
Of course, this is all unlikely.
Mr. Levy,
Another poster was right! You will make the awards more bearable.
If Colin Farrell really wanted to be funny/edgy/outrageous he should have said, “They must have counted the votes in Minnesota.”
Loved the wrap-up, especially the Sam Mendes comment. Ditto on Ricky Gervais.
There were movies in 2008?
(The only golden globes I care about belong to ScarJo.. lolsad)
BREITBART – “Watching these celebs take themselves this seriously is as grating as listening to a sitcom laugh track.”
Next time you’re on the RED EYE, maybe you can tell us all about honing your craft. And how it’s all about the work.
Mr. Breitbart,
“Watching these celebs take themselves this seriously is as grating as listening to a sitcom laugh track.”
HOW DARE YOU!!!
That, SIR, is an incredibly cruel, insensitive, outlandish, foul, mean-spirited, bitter, vicious, savage, heartless, malignant, callous, cold-blooded, unfeeling, uncaring, inhuman, and just plain nasty statement about laugh tracks.8
Again, HOW DARE YOU, sir?!?!?!

YOUR COMMENT IS AWAITING IMMODERATION. OUR BLOGITOR WILL BE SEXING IT UP WITH PROFANITY AND EXPLETIVES SHORTLY.
Concerning Colin Farrell’s “eight year old callback”, think how much better off America and the World would be if there were no basis for the Florida stolen election comment. Also He could have ingested mega amounts of cocaine, not meth. His eyelid twitching may have been due to that.
Krebstar—it’s nice of you to plug my hometown of Detroit, but I gotta tell you, it’s certainly not purple. If anything, being a conservative there is akin to being one in Hollywood. The corrupt leadership is Dems, and even the big business guys like Peter Karmanos are echoing the leaders garbage.
I have not lived in Ohio long, but this was the first political season I could put a bumper sticker on my car and not get keyed. Ohio is purple, but Michigan is deep Blue —at least Detroit, Ann Arbor and the ‘burbs —despite the decline of unions, they still have their hold on the mentality of their members, and not just the auto ones.
I thought the most telling moment of the night was my one-time hero Spielberg’s Freudian slip during his speech…
http://roguewavelength.blogspot.com/2009/01/steven-spielberg-proudly-of-by-and-for.html
Why would you skip “24″ for a bunch of overrated pop-stars patting themselves on the butt? The way I see it, there’s really no comparison. “24″ is interesting and thrilling. Hollywood award shows are TV spam.
24, please? That show stopped being relevant the instant Kim “Spawn” Bauer got her leg caught in the leg iron and the mountain lion descended.
I skipped the GGs b/c I figured it would be a big Bush Bash and watched 24 instead. It bothers me that Garafalo is on there but I’m hoping her character gets killed off soon.
I can’t wait to see Farrell and Cohen slugging it out on “intervention”. And BTW, Katy Keene, There is no such thing as a low blow here. I have seen this crowd trash me, a soldier, and my Commander in Chief for the last eight years without concern for the effect it would have on the countries psyche. I only wish George Soros would receive an award so they could make a mock of the man who would be King. (It will never happen.)
Andy – you rock you MFer!
Alan — never happen. Nikki Finke is a diehard liberal.
SPLASH: please tell us what Spielberg’s Freudian slip was. I cant bear to watch any part of last night’s broadcast of those narcissistic lefties.
Note: a real surprise there. I didn’t know he had brains. Go Mick!
Btw, PATTY: Mickey Roarke’s face was ruined in ‘the ring.’(Mick quit hollywood and went pro boxer for years.)
Since “Bollywood” is predicated on the city being named Bombay, shouldn’t we now be discussing the films of “Mollywood”?
Excuse me, I have to go feed my Minyamarese python.
Splash – “I thought the most telling moment of the night was my one-time hero Spielberg’s Freudian slip during his speech”
Splash, please tell us what Steve’s Freudian slip was. i cant bear to watch any part of last night’s flagrant display of narcissism.
Patty: Mick Roarke’s face was ruined in ‘the ring.’ He quit Hollywood to become a pro-boxer. Looks like it didn’t work out. Kudos to Mick for supporting GWB!
Hey Andy…there’s no need to miss 24 if you have a DVR…you know, that device that allows us to watch you on Red Eye regularly. But it’s comforting to know that you are willing to sacrifice yourself for the sake of others that care about what happened on the GGs and weren’t able to watch due to some unforseen circumstance (insert comedy bit here).
Andy, yeah I am so excited you are posting. Thanks for the Globes wrap up. I hate watching the award shows but I always want to know who one. I can’t wait til The Wrestler opens up in my town.
