I Despair

Mr. David, you have just articulated in an eloquent manner my feelings on the ascension of Barack Obama to the Presidency and more. I sincerely hope his time in office won’t last longer than four years. Thanks for writing the article.

I am a child raised in the hippie generation–even though my parents were about as far from “far-out” as is idealistically possible.

I watched t.v. news casts in horror during the civil rights struggle. I remember forced integration and busing and real Church bombings. I argued with racist friends over the merits of equality. I wasn’t on the front lines, but I was on the “right side.”

I remember reading in the “letters to the editor” of SEVENTEEN magazine angry young women readers, upset that a Negro was featured on the cover and I was thrilled that I was so “color blind” that I hadn’t even noticed.

So, somehow, when I see a person of color as president, my initial reaction is, “wow, cool.” (Sorry. That is my initial reaction.) Then when a split second later I realize and remember that it is Obama I am looking at, I get depressed.

I wish the first elected person of color was someone I could be proud of, or at least feel like I was happy for.

There are a lot of things I dislike about President Obama (especially his shady past here, which gives me pause as to his honesty and sincerity), but I think this column is over-reaching. I doubt his Presidency is going to be an utter disaster. I’m actually more worried about Pelosi & Reid (two of the weakest leaders the Democrats have ever given us) having more influence than they should. With a Republican Congress, I think Obama would be fine as a President. He’s just a little too comfortable voting “present” for my comfort level.

I despair that this guy apparently doesn’t understand that in a Representative Republic such as ours where the first and most prime right is free speech cannot deal with a radio talk show host. I despair people in the opposition party cannot understand that we do not need to respect a man who tells our political leadership they need to do certain things if they want to get along. Despair this: When they close Gitmo, they will send the inmates back to their countries. The countries will try and convict them, then send them to jail. Months or years later, the inmates will escape from their country’s jails and go back to commiting terrorism. Or the countries won’t even bother with the trials and let the inmates walk away.

Then, again, it’s the same thing that happened after the Nuremberg trials so really history’s just repeating itself.

Maybe Obama can get the inmates to promise that they’ll try to refrain from killing anyone on their way home….

I despair for all those who voted for him JUST because they thought he was black. I despair we have a president who won based on affirmative action and not the best candidate for the job. I despair for the unborn child. I despair for the increased blood on the land brought by this president. I despair for the rights of gun owners and Christians, free speech and for the inevitable application of socialism yet to come. I despair, I despair.

I spoke with a gentleman close to my age this morning about the sad lack of knowledge that prevades the American people. The overwhelming majority of people no longer read…they listen to or watch news being fed to them the way PRAVDA and SOVIETFOTO did for 80 years. They have no idea about the world. Few know the difference between cities and states, between nations and continents (Australia is the only continental nation).

At least this young writer understands. Yes! There are great things to celebrate in some respects. The color barrier is gone. Of course, it would have been if Colin Powell or Condie Rice had run as well. But it does mean that the notion that white and black are not equal has been laid to rest. Maybe the rise of Obama will spark critical thought about the TRUE legacy of slavery in America.

The fact is, America is where the experiment was AGAIN tried and FIRST failed. AMERICANS ultimately rejected slavery and way before most other nations. AMERICA is the land where nearly 600,000 mostly WHITE men and women fought to end it.

I wonder how often the NAACP reminds it’s people that the REPUBLICAN PARTY was founded on the platform of abolition and freedom. The fact is, the first 100 years after the civil war, DEMOCRATS weere the most likely sponsors of the KLAN, the segregation of peoples, the economic slavery that persisted after the Emancipation Proclamation was given. How many young Americans got THAT history lesson in High School? Probably not many!

I wonder how many young black Americans know that Dr. KING was himself a conservative and not a liberal, far more closely aligned with the Republican Party than Democrats? King was definately NOT connected to Afro-centrist liberation theology vocalized by bigoted racists like Jeramiah Wright?

Yet at this moment in time, Robert Reich is ready to throw anyone not of color under the bus. Nope, not even allowed to ride it. Who made him GOD? Oh wait! It was the people that voted for hope and change.

Now I wonder how all those COAL, STEEL and AUTO WORKERS in MICHIGAN, OHIO, WEST VIRGINIA and PENNSYLVANIA are going to feel when unemplyment hits 33% in their states as a result of KYOTO and the Obamafication of the economy (socialism is an out-word)?

I wonder just how does the new President of the World, the new Messiah, the man who offerd hope and change ensure that his message is not simply the echo of all those leaders who espoused EXACTLY the same words to their people with disasterous results? Please young people, you did at least learn about leaders named Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Castro, Po Pot, Amin and other arrogant sycophants that destroyed HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of LIVES in the 20th century. Why yes! The “HOPE AND CHANGE” phrase MADE SO POPULAR BY PRESIDENT OBAMA was pretty warn out by those guys that guided the world through the last century.

Frankly, if we GET the kind of government we are promised, there will be a LOT of HOPE and some pretty dramatic change as in all the afore mentioned cases. People will be hoping that their lives will be changed by someone else. People will be WAITING for someone ELESE to do something for them. Enough with the GERBER DIET FOLKS. YOU need to grow up, be responsible and get over the silly notion that EVERYONE ELSE owes you something. You get air and laws that hopefully protect you from random violence, but otherwise, you are on your own as adults. START living that way.

The real Messiah promised one thing in the last days, that evil would be called good and good would be called evil. That at least we know is true. Oh how I wish we had found a capable leader of any color, any race who understood that pithy platitudes and cleaver slogans do not a leader make. I fear as the writer above does that America’s people have been sold a mess of pottage. Our youth are too poorly educated and ignorant to know what they have brought about, much like the masses of young communists did in 1918 Russia. Are we also in for 80 years of darkness? Sadly, I fear as much as well.

It still amazes me that the left will not let their hatred of Bush die. I’m so glad that he gets to go home and live a somewhat normal life now with this wonderful family and enjoy the fresh breezes in Texas. I’ve never seen such hatred towards one man in my lifetime. I think it all stemmed and was fueled by the election loss in 2000. They never ever got over the feeling they had that evening and the months that followed. I believe that they should have “Bush Derangement Syndome” therapy if this doesn’t end with their guys win.

SAMUAL…one of the problems you will have in making any criticism of someone like ANN COULTER stick with educated people is the fact that almost every line in an ANN COULTER book is WELL DOCUMENTED. SENATOR Joeseph McCarthy was NEVER involved with the HOUSE (OF REPRESENTATIVE for those of you under age 40) UN-AMERICAN ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE that conducted all those hearings a little more than half a century ago. How do you explain the dozens of history books, etc that all remind the next generation of how evil McCarthy (and Republicans) were when in fact, McCarthy, a Senator chaired the SENATE’s NATIONAL SECURITY COMMITTEE. They never investigated a single private citizen. McCARTHY only investigated government officials, about 130 in all. Interestingly enough, of the 130, the archivists of the former Soviet Union and KGB confirmed in 1995 that 129 were indeed SOVIET SPIES. They could neither confirm or deny the last one on the basis of stored Soviet papers, but I think the point is pretty clear. McCARTHY was right all along.

Oh and who was it that DID actually grill and persecute the black-listed 300? Why his name was John Stephans Wood, THE DEMOCRAT who did chair the HUAAC from 1947 through 1953. It’s odd the way history has covered up the villin and created one out of a true hero. So shocking is the TRUTH, so disturbing to HOLLYWOOD that all their recollections are lies easily verified by papers, journals, minutes of meetings and events held in the Library of Congress that George Clooney set about to produce, direct and act in the motion picture “Good Night and Good Luck” in order to educate the NEXT generation about history the way it has to be rather than the way it really was (much like Oliver Stone’s fanciful rewrites of History in Kennedy).

1) Was IRAQ allied with Al Queda?

NOT Directly because Saddam was as much hated by Islamic Fundamentalists as the Saudi Princes to the south. Tha Taliban was Al Quieda’s protector. But Al Queda was clearly financed with western oil money via the Saudis and other ME governments. To think that in a part of the world where the enemy of my enemy is my brother did not apply to IRAQ is crazy. If that were so, why did Saddam’s OWN government target and destry it’s main archive, operation, central bank and records buildings? Better than 90% of what IRAQ was involved in went up in flames before one Tom Cruise missile was launched.

2) Was IRAQ a producer of WMD’s?

Yes! Please refer to the numerous volumes on the subject and sanitized down to a relatively short but highly respected article in NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE (nOV 2002).

3) Were WMD’s the reason we invaded IRAQ?

I seem to remember a variety of reasons including Regime Change proposed and sponsored FIRST by the affible womanizer President Clinton in 1998. But I digress…. The fact is, we AMERICANS and the BRITISH intelligence KNEW for certain about the 550 MT of processed Uranium (not enriched) Yellow-cake held in a facility 12 miles south of Baghdad. THAT was sole reason enough to go into IRAQ but explaining why may require you to connect more than 3 synapse together….nevertheless, here goes.

4) WAS THE YELLOW CAKE DANGEROUS?

Not if Betty-Croker was the maker. Otherwise that would be a great big YES! What part of “highly radioactive material” do all the metrosexuals not understand? A few train-cars of the stuff (550 Metric Tons) would make one heck of a lot of suitcase sized dirty bombs. Now lest yo think those are just sacks carted around by Charls Schultz’ loveavle cartoon child Pigpen, the reality is anly a few hundred pounds of the stuff could kill or injure 1000 x the number of Allied and American Lives expended in getting to it in IRAQ over the last five years. So explain to me SAMUAL and others like you….what would you have said about the BUSH adminsitration if a few of THOSE had made their way into PARIS, FRANKFORT, LONDON, MADRID, TEL AVIV, NEW YORK, LOS ANGELES, CHICAGO, TORANTO and that was just presupposing that Saddam was going to share only small amounts?

BUSH managed to SIT QUETLY along with TONY BLAIR and the CANADIAN PM’s Jean Cretian, Paul Martine and Stephen Harper who ALL kept their mouths shut for five years. Those men should be thanked. They put their political reputations and egos aside while the left harped repeatedly about NO-WMD’s…which while technically correct was clearly a distortion of the real threat all along. BUSH has been villified when in fact, he bit the political bullett, protected the allied troops while they quietly packaged it up and carefully shipped every last pound of it (1,210,000 lbs for those of you who get your news from PMSNBC) out of IRAQ, disguised as oil cargo… TO CANADA where it is all being refined into nuclear fuel pellets for energy reactors in North America.
In case you’re wondering, SADAM did have the machinary (large centrifuges) necessary to at least refine the materials further to make them even more deadly.

ARE YOU HONEST ENOUGH TO ADMIT THAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW THIS ABOUT YOR PRESIDENT AND THE IRAQ WAR?

I find it interesting that the OBAMAFIED respondents have said not word ONE about the realities of Avi’s comments on KENYA and other enslaved peoples. It would do us all well to remember a few poignient axioms of truth relating to the great and true civil rights m,ovement in America that began with men like Payne, Adams, Jefferson and came to a head in Dr. Martain Luther King:

King asked for some very DIFFERENT things than todays marxist dominated left. KING wanted:

1) The right to sit on the bus, any bus, in any place. King did NOT lobby and die for free bus tickets.

2) The right to sit at the lunch counter, any lunch counter, to order from any menu in any restaurant. He never asked for a free lunch or food stamps.

3) The right to education, access to any institution of higher learning, any seat in any char on the same basis for which all other students competed. At no time did Dr. King ask for minority scholarships or affirmative action entry. He viewed such programs as pandering and belittling of all people.

4) The right to drink water from any fountain, to walk on any sidewalk and to compete in business on the basis of delivery, not on the basis of skin color. He never asked for “set asides and preferences.”

5) King desired for all people to have equal and fair access to jobs and apprenticeships, not make work and hand-outs.

6) King wanted his children to be able to sit in the halls of government and to represent the people, not a specific color of people.

7) King wanted and fought for fair housing, equal opportunity employment and access to the same health care as all other people. He didn’t ask for it to be free or granted with special priveleges so long as the husband was driven from the home and child left fatherless.

King wanted for all people the right to be treated with dignity and station that comes from hard work and industry. He didn’t ask for a nanny-state to replace adulthood.

9) King looked with hope to a time when a Black man, Asian Man, White man of Jewish or Hispanic descent, i.e. any man OR WOMAN, could rise to the highst stations and office in the land. He didn’t expect great men like Clarence Thomas to be villified for thinking so much like him.

10) King above all else reminds the best in us to judge all men (and women) by the CONTENT of their characters and not the color of their skin. One of my favorite movies is Deep Impact wherein Morgan Freeman gives and exceptionally moving performance as the president of the United States in disasterous times. Mr. OBAMA is NO MORGAN FREEMAN and that saddens me. Conversely, I know little of Mr. Freeman’s politics but note with joy the types of spiritual or deep thinking characters he has played throughout his life. I would have voted for him in a heartbeat over Hopy McChange or John McCain because, I think Morgan Freeman portrays those whom he most likely emulates in his private life. Sometimes what you see really IS what you get.

Samuel, it isn’t about hating the left or anything like that. It is understanding the true worth of country, of freedom and the price of it. Your emporer has taken office without new clothes. MORGAN is correct. There is one important detail in all this. RONALD REAGAN was one of the very first screen actors and Hollywood icons to be interviewed over these issues. Then Chairman, J. Parnell Thomas, soon resigned from his position as Chairman of the committee and was replaced by John Stephens Wood (DEM-Georgia) from 1947-1953. The committee had a long standing history of looking into domestic espianage and subversive activities. Hollywood’s leftest elite began surfacing in strength in the mid 30’s, were pretty much forgotten during the pro-Stalin 40’s and so the real ugliness began when WOOD took over. All those Hollywood stars and starletts that remember being persecuted by SENATOR JOE McCARTHY never hacuallty happened. McCARTHY was as mentioned befor, vigilent and relentless in digging out communist agents working for the KGB and it’s surrogates. Again as I previously mentioned, he was right in 129 of 130 investigations. The left owning however virtually owned the media and with the assistance of liars like Edward R. Murrow, transformed WOOD into a non-person and McCARTHY into Satan himself over the decade that followed 1953.

May I offer up another view. For the US Soldier, I despair when I think that he will be sent to Kenya or similar country to “right a wrong” or other such drivel. US Soldiers should risk their life to defend the US, and no other country. If this author wants to go to Kenya and risk his life, he is free to do so. Leave my son and his son alone, to live their lives without your moral cause interrupting.

For the US taxpayer, I despair that no “good cause” anywhere in the world seems worth passing on, especially if you are a govt official with an open checkbook. We have TONS of US citizens in need right here who go to bed hungry and poor. Lets take care of them shall we?

BELLOFF – I almost completely concur with your wisdom in light of the words of our founding fathers, but the fact is, we live in a much different word. Even then isolationish was inadequate as practiced by Jefferson and eventually America was dragged into the European Conflict we now call the War of 1812.

Isolationism was used to thwart JAPAN and it only made them respond with aggression. We tried to remain isolated when Hitler was busy making HOPE and CHANGE promises to Lord Chamberlain. We know how well that worked out too.

While I am wholly sympathetic to your comments, having a son of military age as well as a grandsone that will reach that age in a very dangerous world, the fact remains that we are a nation that can in no simple way be isolationist. To do so, we might find some temporary peace and respite or security here, much like the TURKEY does as he prances about the coop uncaring just before the forth Thursday in November. But that Thursday always comes for fatted birds and to think we can simply remain home and remain free, truly free is a pipe dream.

Um, what part of well documented by the RUSSIAN GOVERNMENT, former SOVIET UNION and official archivists of the KGB do you now understand? Dude, you are afraid of the truth for some reason? WHY?

Um, what part of the congressional record do you think lies. I’m confused. First you attack McCarthy. Then you vindicate his work was against spied in the American Government and then slam his now well vindicated work as a witch-hunt.

Um, then you say I suppose if I understand you correctly, that revelations from there (Russia) and our own congressional records are somehow revisionist history as if it’s a bad thing. The last time I checked, Copernicus, Kepler and Gallaleo were ALL ABOUT REVISIONIST HISTORY at the time they said the earth was NOT the center of the universe. They were ALSO proven right! Revisionism really began when Hollywood and the Murrow inspired media labled that period of American History the McCARTHY ERA. Where was WOOD’s with the HUAAC and HOLLYWOOD at the time, certainly NOT trying to correct the record.

Fortunately meticulous records are kept in congress. Fortunately we do have records of facts that are easily found. YOU wish to believe in myths and fair tails because being the silly victim is so much better than being the master of yourself and your destiny. McCarthy wasn’t perfect and no man is. But he was right which you now call a witch hunt. Well the witches HE huted DID turn out to be Soviet Agents in the end now didn’t they?

Am I the only one that gets this. Please someone else tell SAMUEL that he’s so far out in left field absent any real scholarly work or research on the subject of that era. Sorry Hollywood, your big bad meanie was Dem Rep John Stephans Woods (1947-1953) and not SENATOR Joe McCarthy who by all historically archived accounts established by the Library of Congress, the Congressional Record and eye witnesses,never set one foot inside a HUAAC meeting or committee room. Did he likely meet with WOOD? Certainly, like any other Committee Chair. But he was not the one investigating Hollywood.

As for your responses to my comment, I give you a reference featuring an exchange in testimony between Reagan and HUAC in 1947, and you respond with a reference biased toward the left. If that’s what you’re offering as concrete evidence of Reagan’s alleged ratting, I can’t wait to see your “evidence” for Israel being responsible for 9/11.

Samuel, if the writers of these books you mention are as reliable as Anthony Summers, can you explain to me why I should bother reading these books, as they are far from accurate? As for “FBI informant T-10″, just because you think Reagan’s cooperation with the FBI means a confirmation of ratting, doesn’t mean that was the case; using the FOIA won’t prove your claims.

Refusing to believe Reagan was a rat by any definition doesn’t constitute hero worship, but the way the media and some people have been lauding praises on Barack Obama sounds more like hero worship to me. But hey, it boils down to a matter of interpretative differences, wouldn’t you say?

I agree wholeheartedly with this article. I learned some things I didn’t know before (I don’t often think to read the newspaper) and had some suspicions validated. I’m willing to give Mr. Obama a chance (I’m part of the Electorate after all), but based on his stances and track record I don’t really trust what he’s going to do with it. And how well do we really know him? With his short political career, he might just as well be as much a Dark Horse as was James K. Polk (1845-1849).

As for the long string of comments, I think it’s a mark of Truth when people voluntarily give facts and sources. Sources say, “Hey, you don’t have to take MY word for it. I’ll even show you where I found it.” Conversely, when someone gets up in arms because they don’t have facts to back them up and end up resorting to dithering and mudslinging , that tells me what they are saying is most likely false to begin with. “I may have found it in such and such a place, but you can’t get to it without inordinate inconvenience.” And nothing says Falsehood as strongly as not being able to keep facts straight. (I learned that from “The Berenstain Bears and the Truth”, when a large bird of indeterminate coloring and motivation flies in the living room window and knocks over Mama’s favorite lamp, while Brother and Sister just happen to be innocently playing soccer in the house.)

I was laughing as I read this exchange. As a mostly-disinterested party, I can tell a lot about it just by gauging the people involved. Large chunks of this debate felt very similar to the scene from the movie “HOOK”, just before the huge food fight, when Robin Williams and Rufio get into an insult war. “If I’m a maggot-burger, why don’t you just EAT ME!!!” They summarily start throwing pudding.

And please don’t flame me for using grade-school level sources. I’m not developmentally or intellectually challenged. I’m just a college-age young adult who still believes that yes, Virginia, there IS a Santa Claus.

It’s too bad you didn’t despair over the last 8 years and do something to try to avert the condition that America is in today. The arrogance and greed of the right should be held accountable. The republicans had the trust of the country and abused it. NO wonder the faith was lost.
Although I don’t blame Bush for the economic conddition of the country, I do feel that he was oblivious to the country in his distraction with Iraq. The “good” ole boys got a way with fiscal treason while the “leader” wasn’t looking. Now you think that your group is right and the people who elected Obama were wrong??? Is that not arrogrance? To feel that you and your ilk know what is best for the masses? The people have voted and their will prevailed.

Get on deck and try to do what is best for America instead of dispairing and wishing for the president to fail. These ideas will keep us divided.
Oh yes, and don’t even pretend to speak for black people here or abroad.

While I, too did not revel in the outcome of the election, I do not believe Dr. King’s dream was realized. In fact the exact opposite occurred. We were told that we would be considered racists if we dared vote against “The One”. Black Americans celebrated a 1/2 black man being elected president after being told they would sell-outs if they voted against him.. Isn’t he also 1/2 WHITE? I, personally, STILL long for the day a man (or woman) is judged by the content of his (her) character and NOT by the color of his (her) skin.

My own despair is tempered, even a little, by reading this article.

It’s still too early to assume what Barack Obama’s presidency will be like. Sure, he does have liberal stances on sensitive areas.

An important case would be the fact that he is willing to negotiate with any leader. For some people, that may be a sign of weakness. However, Obama did mention that if people bombed the place where he was raising his children, he would confront those people in force.

I think that Obama is still capable of going to war if necessary.
