Thank You, John Nolte
by Andrew BreitbartI was a bad boy in 2009. I promised at the beginning of the year at the time of Big Hollywood’s launch to get back into movies and some television. But it’s one year later, and I still have not seen a single episode of The Sopranos (even though I know I’d like it). I wasn’t much better on the film front either. I went to maybe 6 movies in the theater last year, and the same 3 DVD’s from NetFlix sat in our house for the entire year, only to be finally returned and unwatched.
How about that Bruno!
That doesn’t mean I completely tuned out – thanks to Big Hollywood.
On the one year anniversary of the site, I thank God that I chose John Nolte to be the editor in chief. It’s not just because he knows everything about film – though he does. It’s because the man has an impeccable moral compass, and it’s unbelievably refreshing to read his analysis of pop culture not through the typical NY TIMES/VARIETY/VANITY FAIR post-modern prism but through the ancient lens of right vs. wrong, decency vs. indecency, entertainment vs. nihilism.
And it has resonated. Everywhere I go in Los Angeles — and beyond — people come up to me and congratulate me for… well, hiring him. He’s the heart and soul of Big Hollywood.
On this first anniversary, I’d also like to thank from the bottom of my heart our contributors and readers. I am deeply grateful for each and every one of you.
A special thanks to Patrick Courrielche for his Pulitzer Prize Winning* (if Pulitzers were still awarded for great journalism) expose of the NEA/White House propaganda initiative. And a special acknowledgment to Stage Right, who came out as Larry O’Connor. I hope there are more who follow his lead.
And a last, but certainly not least, thanks to Alex Marlow, who is Mr. Big. He is the man juggling all the Bigs at all times.
One year in, I know that so many conservatives, JFK liberals, and libertarians in this town are a little more secure in voicing their points of view (in their work, on this soap box and beyond), And that is no small thanks to the environment that John, Alex, our contributors and our commenters have created here. Yes, Big Hollywood promotes the good stuff this town produces, and critiques the bad, but this mighty collective is mighty impressive when it is out there targeting what the left likes to call “The McCarthyites,” but in this case those entrenched in their institutional power who bully and punish those that disagree. Life (and, in many cases, box office returns) were less agreeable to those types in 2009.
Thanks for a wonderful year, my friends.
And, I’ll try to watch more movies and TV this year.

Happy Birthday BH. Thank you Andrew, John and Alex for a great site!
Looking forward to Big Education, Big Peace and Big Jerusalem.
I like the Top 5/10/25 lists. I'd like to see more of those. Always fun.
Can't wait for Big Environment!
Where else can a Hollywood girl go to have scintillating conversation with like minded individuals. Big Hollywood was beyond clever. John Nolte is a very classy individual. Breitbart is a genius ! Congratulations on the first year! Many more to follow…
Yeah, good job Nolte. This is actually my favorite of the "BIG" sites because every day I'm guaranteed a laugh. And I'm loving ALL of the "BIG" sites overall. I just checked out BIG JOURNALISM today and loved Gutfeld's story as well as the phone conversation with Bertha Lewis. Keep up the awesome work guys. Looking forward to the rest of the "BIG" sites.
John – What a treat it was working with you over those few grueling weeks. I think I spoke to you more than my wife for a while there. Thanks for making the time for my babbling and your guidance on focusing on the heart of the story. You've been an amazing editor and friend ever since. Looking forward to more adventures over the second year.
Nolte's gots skillz!
Great job on Big Hollywood…. great job on launching Big Journalism. Every day is a big day now with my addiction all three of the current "Big" sites. Keep those Big Ideas coming!
Big ups to Andrew, Alex and Larry for the support. You guys created something pretty amazing. Soak it in…2010 will be even better.
Thanks to Pam, Iowahawk, Ari, Alvaro, Charles, Patterico, Michael, Mr. Flynn, and the rest of the BH Massive for your supportive article when a brutha like me needed it.
And special thanks to Stage, Adam, and Ben for proofing and that extra little kick you gave me.
Many, many heartfelt thanks to Mr. Breitbart and Mr.Nolte for what is a Godsend for those of us in the performing arts who need a place to vent and encourage others who think as we do. Congrats also on the Big Journalism launch. The phone conversation with Bertha Lewis could be a comedy sketch.
Happy 1st Birthday, Big Hollywood. I'm looking forward to many more.
Hear, hear!
A "Big" thanks to all of you – Andrew, John, Larry, Patrick, Alex, Michael, Adam, and all the rest of the crew here at BH for a fantastic year. How much we would have missed without your efforts! Via con Dios, my friends!
Almost forgot. Special thanks to Jimmy Arone for pointing me to Big Hollywood at a very crucial point. The story might have been a tree falling in the forest if Jimmy hadn't give me the insight to go with Drewdog.
Soprano's? Are you making names plural with an apostrophe? You're setting a very bad example for bloggers everywhere.
Hear, hear on John Nolte. I started reading him on Libertas, followed him to Dirty Harry's Place where a wonderful community of people participated in his forum. John has done a magnificent job at BH and I thank him for the daily lessons and homework in the best film school around.
Thank you
Thank you everyone, especially the Boss for his gracious comments. He took a helluva chance on me, and I'll always be grateful for that. I've learned more this year than I ever thought possible and to work with people as ethical and dynamic as Andrew and his right hand man, Larry, has been an unforgettable and exhilerating ride.
Just want to second what Andrew said about our amazing contributors and commenting community — especially Alex Marlow whose help in every respect has been invaluable. He is wise beyond the years of someone twice his age. Quite a guy…
Finally, Patrick hammering out that story with you was my pleasure. You've got skillz and ballz. My hat's off to you and Stage Right and all the others like you… Mr. Breitbart's creation is alive and kicking. His plan was to change Hollywood in 20 years. I think that thanks to all of you, we've cut that down to at least 11.5.
Congratulations, John (and Andrew and gang). You've had a great year, and I haven't had as much time as I would like to post and remind you of just how good the site is, and how much fun I've had commenting on it over the past year. Keep up the good work, and continue to inspire all of us.
I tip my hat to the entire staff. Great work!
Once upon a time during my college years in the late '80's, the only mass-media outlet conservatives had was National Review. Then there was Rush who transformed one of the forgotten step-kids of the Liberal media establishment (talk radio) into the first electronic public space for loyal Americans. Then conservatives watched as Roger Ailes launched the most successful cable news shows following one embarrasingly simple formula: cater to the huge underserved American audience that doesn't live in Manhattan, San Francisco, or Beverly Hills.
And now add a surging internet presence led by Andrew Breitbart.
Nothing makes the Leftnuts more crazy than having to add YET ANOTHER target (or celebrity) to their Stalinist smear list. They whine loudly because their cushy monopoly over the public media space is over- and they want their dirty blanket back just the way it used to be.
Keep it up Andrew!
Absolutely.
Hat's off to Andrew Breitbart for all that he has done, and the wise decision to surround himself with like minded individuals. John Nolte, Mike Flynn and Michael Walsh………………….2010 and beyond should be BIGFUN
I can't wait…………………………………….I believe there truely is hope for the rule of the people.
John I'm sorry to admit that, unlike Andrew, I haven't been to the movie theatre, (though I do occaisionally take in a play) once this year.
But following bighollywood.com I don't feel as though I've missed a thing.
Thanks, and keep up the good work. And tell the boss you want a fuckin raise………………….
How about a website for "Big Green?" Or is that redundant with "Big Government?"
You couldn't go wrong betting on Dirty Harry.
Andrew – thank you for providing this as a venue for us conservatives. BH has become a daily stop for me – like stopping in to your favorite haunt.
John – thank you for your guidance – I am sure that it is a lot of work behind the scenes that we on the other side never see.
BTW for all of you – I see on the news someone taking over the NEA – and saying in a very defensive tone that he will "champion" art – and "if some view this as partisan so be it".
Wonder from where he got that defensive tone and secondly why would he think "championing art" would be partisan?
I believe it is going to be called "Big Environment" and it is in the works.
Andrew, I have been with BH since day one. As my year got busier and busier, I had less and less time to make my daily visits to the blogs that I enjoy. Today, this is the only one that I check daily. Thank you.
Also, I would like to thank you for letting us all discover that Adam Baldwin was even cooler than we already thought he was. I swear, before him, I wasn't sure that there was anyone that well-educated in Hollywood.
And thanks to all of my fellow commentors. This place wouldn't be the same without all of you (except the trolls!)
Happy Anniversary Big Hollywood!!! If it wasn't for you I would have totally given up on "pop" culture. Mr. Breibart and Mr. Nolte, you are doing yeoman's work. Thanks for all the great articles and keeping an eye on the lib culture. Keep up the good work and looking forward to 2010.
"…the same 3 DVD’s from NetFlix sat in our house for the entire year, only to be finally returned and unwatched."
Thank You! I have been kicking myself for awhile thinking I am probably the only one who has done that.
[...] that organization. Breitbart also has started several website organizations such as Big Government, Big Hollywood, and the most recent, Big Journalism (we think he should join with us and rename that site with our [...]
John I haven't wasted my money at the movies in twenty years…I do, however watch a very few on dvd…There's just not anything Hollywood has to offer now days…but I LOVE this site!! I'm so glad that you can feel free to writ how you really feel and not have to worry about some liberal 'boss' cutting everything you say…Congrats on the great site and write-ups!!
John Nolte is the man.
Andrew, I have a film I'd like you to watch. I will wait until the time is right and you have some time. I want to congrats you on the success of BIG HOLLYWOOD. It has been fun coming here and posting. It is a great place for a conservative filmmaker to promote his film and to vent. Thanks for providing this platform for all of us.
I first met John Nolte in 2005 at the Hollywood Congress of Republicans. I told him about my film and he wanted to see it and would do a review. That review is still the best one I have and I have a hell of a lot of them now. I find John to be fair, honest in all his reviews and he was the perfect choice to run this site. I was very happy for him when he told us on Dirty Harry he was heading over here to run BIG HOLLYWOOD. This is only going to get bigger and better.
'you've come far pilgrim' where is that line from John??
Ditto!
Watch out!
The next two names the Liberal Press are going to assail will be Andrew Breitbart and John Nolte.
I can see the mockery now, on either (or both) "The Jon Stewart Show" and "Bill Maher."
Of course, all that just means The Bigs are hitting hard and hitting home.
Yeah, the Big sites are great reads. How far will this trend go? Big Pets. Big Midgets. Big Girl Panties. Big Trouble. Big Moonbat. Sky's the limit.
Congrats, I love all the Bigs!
John Nolte rules!
I originally didn't like Big Hollywood, mostly because I felt John (aka "Dirty harry") had been muzzled and hardly contributed anything. I must say that I have come to really like this site and I read it daily, so I was wrong. May Big Hollywood (and John) celebrate many more birthdays!
I like the Top 5/10/25 lists. I'd like to see more of those. Always fun.
standing ovation!
Hey, I've thought you were awesome since you created the world's coolest news aggregator. The Big sites are beyond merely awesome. They are a vehicle by which we Americans might actually be able to restore our REPRESENTATIVE REPUBLIC (If I hear one more moron call the USA a democracy, I may become an all-consuming singularity).
May 2010 be even better, Andrew!
Thank you to Andrew and John for this site. It is my regular stop not just daily, but several times a day.
Here is to an even BIGger 2010!
Mr. Nolte, you are definitely a big reason I come here. Your insight into film and TV is unparalleled and as Andrew Breitbart stated, morally bound to right and wrong. Although I don't agree with everything you post, I completely respect your opinions and use them center my own moral compass from time to time.
Add my own thanks for a great website…..
My thanks too go to John Nolte, the hardest-working editor-in-chief in show business. He's been unfailingly supportive and easy to work with, despite all the hours he (and Alex too) have wrestled with re-formatting my articles. And of course, my hat's off to Andrew, and my thanks to him for the opportunity to contribute to Big Hollywood.
Recently I went out to dinner in Santa Monica with a handful of contributors to Big Hollywood. There was a moment during this dinner when I looked around the table and thought to myself "I can't believe I'm sitting at this table with THESE people!"
I STILL feel that way every time I see my name (my REAL name now) posted at Big Hollywood.
I will add one more adjective to AB's description of John Nolte: Patient. John Nolte has displayed an incredible level of patience with all of us. I can't begin to imagine what his e-mail inbox looks like as he herds all of the BH contributors. His advice to me has been invaluable and over the past year he has taught me how to write.
It had to be difficult to go from being a one man show to being the ring leader of a 50-ring circus. Thank you, John for keeping us all focused on the big picture.
And Alex… well… let's just say Alex knows EVERYTHING and he keeps his mouth shut about it. If I didn't fear him so much, I would tell you about his propensity for 90's Boy Bands… but I shall refrain for now. I will just say that my favorite thing in the world is to find a bad link or something in a post and email Alex to tell him about it. Then I start counting the seconds until he responds with a "fixed" e-mail… I usually don't get past 30!
Great hires, AB. Great hires.
Congratulations Andrew and thank you to all who contribute to BH. I visit everyday and have read so many great columns.. I went to the archives to re-read a few from the beginning. While searching, I came across so many good ones that all I could think was wow, what a great, insightful year.
You guys have an excellent team of writers, editors, investigators etc. Keep it up guys we're counting on ALL of you to help us get through these trying times.
BH is a site I always look forward to reading, i hope you will continue to add more videos from conservative actors. Thanks for adding Zo and Crowder and a great addition to your site would be the talented Sharise Parviz
Been watching her from the beginning and what a shame that you don't cover her work.
http://www.youtube.com/user/RestrainedNoMore
Thanks, AB, for the entire family of "Big" sites. Heartfelt "bravo" to Mr.Nolte and the staff/writers of Big Hollywood. I admit , Andrew, to watching a very small amount of television myself. Also, besides a few childrens movies I took my kids to see, the first "adult" movie I viewed myself was Avatar(yuk!), on New Years Eve!! With Mr.Nolte and the rest of the staff on the job, I've saved a ton of money I might have wasted!
P.S.- Big thanks to Steven, Jeffrey, Alonzo, etc.,etc. How much better can it get?
I never like to do that. I try to watch my Netflix discs as soon as possible, then return them quickly. If I sit on a disc, then somebody else is kept waiting.
Happy birthday, Big Hollywood, and thanks for everything you've done this year.
I'd like to thank you particularly for Stephen Crowder, Robert J. Avrech, Adam Baldwin, and Victoria Jackson. They have added a great deal to this site and I look forward to their essays. I look forward to your discovery of more brilliant conservative voices in the year to come!
I've been around since Libertas. It's a real pity that Libertas crashed and burned, but Dirty Harry's Place and now Big Hollywood have risen to the occasion, becoming daily reads for me.
Keep it up, contributors.
Happy Birthday Big Hollywood!
I too am very glad that you guys found each other. Keep on truckin, you magnificent SOBs.
Nolte has saved me money in addition to keeping my blood pressure under control and my stomach acid where it belongs. Before Nolte, I'd blithely go into a movie say about two people falling in love and get bashed over the head with "the liberal tell" as Nolte terms it or sucker punched about my values, ideas and/or politics. Now I don't go to ANY film without first checking out Big Hollywood (before that, it was Dirty Harry's Place). For instance, without Big Hollywood, I'd have gone to see "Avatar". Now I don't need to. I've seen good special effects ("Star Trek", "Jurassic Park"), so I don' t need to have my country, my military, my intelligence bashed with some bovine excrement propaganda about global warming while the temp is in the twenties in the South and I'm worried about my gardenias. I knew taking a swipe at Bush in the new Sandra Bullock movie would ruin the film for me, so I haven't gone (though the rest of the film is positive). I'd have never seen "Taken" had BH not reviewed it. It ended up one of my favorite films of the year. We Trekkies had a field day discussing the new "Star Trek". A film that promotes discussion has earned its place in history. The posters on BH are well informed, love movies and politics and rarely, if ever, rude, unless the poster is a troll who got assigned to us that day. You can always tell them by their lack of intellectual honesty and the fact they always make a snark or two about everyone else.
All this to say, thanks Andrew for BH and for hiring Nolte and thanks Nolte for all you do to warn us about sucker punches and "the liberal tell" leaving us to make up our own minds whether or not to see the film.
Yes, more "Big" sites – especially Education!!!!!
I was thinking Big Science, Environment being only the current obvious subject. Though I don't think there's any other science 1/10th as politicized.
the one thing Mr Nolte has done for all conservative film lovers is…
Take the heat! The excoriation he is getting from the State Controlled Media over the Government approved Messages in 'Avatar' is revealing.
How dare he criticize Jimmy (The Thief) Cameron for preaching hippy dippy leftism from his perch high atop Mt
Hollywood! Goodness, you'd think he went after the Pope.
No, that would have been approved of. What did Ray Davies say in 'Lola'? 'It's a mixed up, shook up, jumbled up world'?
Except for Nolte! la la la la Nolte….
Well done, sir…
I am proud to admit I am a John Nolte groupie from back in the Libertas days and I couldn't be happier about the job he is doing here. Thanks John!!! Keep it up Andrew, the Left doesn't have an answer for you right now and it is driving them nuts.
Well, shut my mouth, Mr. Nolte! Congratulations! The boss is clearly very happy with you, which means that the culture Breitbart wants to reclaim through Big Hollywood will vote Republican, but will still be replete with expletives, snarky cynicism, debased entertainment, and moral relativism offered as enlightenment. I guess if Breitbart succeeds, religious conservatives looking for moral — not just political — reclamation of the culture will still be the odd man out, and will still have a fight on their hands.
It seems my argument has been with Breitbart, not you. My mistake.
God Bless you Andrew for all you do to get the truth out to the Smart America's who love this country….Hollywood, Obama are the true evil's of America…ah yes the media and their but kissing is lame and only fools turn on ABC…MSNBC..NBC…CNN..ETC. 2010 they will all be gone and Obama Inpeeched….Lets take our country back, and start over with hand picked American's who love this country.
Just wanna chime in that BH made my year, hands down – you Big guys ALL rock! And so do the readers, Big time. It has been inspiring getting to know you all – and here's to much, much more in 2010!
PS And thanks again, Andrew, for giving me that life line last January.
I'm looking forward to Big Cheese Burger for lunch!
(sorry, couldn't resist)
Sitting ovation.
Can't type standing up.
I enjoy reading BH's honest, morale-based articles about a generally corrupt industry. I personally am fed up with the Hollywood and find BH a refreshing change in the normal drivel that comes from gossip trash. Keep up the good work.
Agreed.
There are already plenty of anti-global warming blogs floating around the internet. I hope Mr. B and his crew consider bringing them on board, if even for only an occasional guest post.
They've already got tons of posts and documentation just waiting for a bigger audience.
I've been reading this one for years, Coyote is one of the leading voices on the scam of placement of NASA temperature monitoring stations. I don't remember if he's building the database on the stations, or just helping with the effort. But have a look….
http://www.coyoteblog.com/coyote_blog/2007/08/som...
Well come on, don't leave us hanging, which movie?
I welcome it! That's how you know when you're really impacting a modern liberal. They rise up on their hind haunches and start throwing a hissy fit.
I'd love to see Mr. B interviewed by Jon Stewart on the Daily Show, and hand Stewart his ass with a side of slaw.
John's posts are always my favorites on this site. I loved the top 25 Christmas movies list. I'd seen most of them, but there were a few new ones I checked out this holiday season that I really enjoyed. From one movie buff to another, thanks John!
That would make a great name for a master "Big" web site that ties all the various little Bigs together.
I normally hang out here at BH, and occasionally check out Government – I've already Journalism to my tool bar. But if they were all tied together, it could be a way to keep tabs on all the Bigs, and I might see something I want to read, but would normally never see.
Thank you so much, Nolte, for this last year. You have done an exemplary job and I am truly grateful for it.
Boy, I wish you'd review more films. Bar none, your reviews are the tops. It's not just that you are so accurate in dissecting the film, it's that you're also so damned funny. I love that – even though I know it obviously costs you acid reflux and a handy paper bag to endure the drivel from Hollywood. Listen – I'll make a deal. If you review more, I will willingly contribute to your Mediflex fund to pay for your barf bags and Prilosec. (I will even throw in some Jack Daniels just to show my heart's in the right place.)
Oh, and Happy New Year!
Think of the "heat" as an award. It means you're getting under their skin.
Modern liberals always save the most vicious attacks for those who scare them the most. Look to Sarah Palin for a prime example. Before anyone even heard her name the talking point memos were already spread across the nation.
Big Hollywood is a daily must read for me. Love it. Thank you Andrew, thank you John for an OUTSTANDING blog, for OUTSTANDING commentary on culture and entertainment. You are true Americans!!! THANK YOU!!!!
John Nolte– aka Dirty Harry– is a pop culture genius and amazing writer. Great choice, Breitbart.
John Nolte and his lovely wife have been good friends to the Avrech family for several years. It is an honor and a pleasure to contribute here at Big Hollywood.
I enjoy this site. Hell I saw Gran Torino, before that I went to An American Carol. I guess The Passion was before that. Holly Wood sucks. All if not most of their stars suck. I get physically ill when I see a Matt Damon or someone like him on screen.
TCM is where I get my movie fix. I hope they don't allow Liberals to destroy that channel.
Tell Dennis Miller that ABC's Jake Tapper is still a huge Liberal and is just putting one over on Mr. Miller.
Very grateful to be able to come to this site to read opinions on what movies to spend my money on. I haven't been disappointed yet! So glad that BigHollywood has been a success, thanks to Breitbart and John Nolte and the rest! (I do also enjoy Victoria Jackson's blogs..).
By the way, I highly recommend The Blind Side, great movie.
Two things I love about The Big's … first is real journalism, no further explanation necessary. Second is the conniption fits I know it gives liberals.
Thank you, Andrew and John and everyone at BH! Here's to even greater success in the new year.
Congrats John & Andrew! I love this site. Andrew, you need to register Big Cajones for doing what you do.
I wish to add my own sincere amen to Bretitbart's praise of Nolte and Nolte's praise of Breitbart. Both have done a heck of a job over the past year in getting the word out that not everyone who lives and/or works in Hollywood is in lockstep with the far left, as people may have previously presumed.
Best wishes for continued success.
Burt Prelutsky
Thanks to Breitbart for hiring Nolte!
I've never reached out to contribute to any website, but the day I found Big Hollywood a year ago, I gave you a call.
Nolte welcomed me and allowed me to contribute, and it's been aaaaaaawwwwwwesome.
Let's keep on truckin'!
Congrats to Big Hollywood for a incredible year!!! It is one of the "must read sites" ( along with BG and BJ) that I check in to every day. I have found like minded people when i thought I was the only one. specifically Stage Right, Moxie, Gary Graham, Patrick (whose last name I cant Pronoounce) and the crew over in the "Hollywood Chat Pack"
Thank you Mr Nolte for running a real first class organization, and of course thank you Andrew, for having the courage to kick over the first domino…..
"see you in November!!!!"
So does this mean you're giving him a raise? ; )
To Mr. Breitbart,
Your public thanking of Mr. Nolte and others is an admirably classy move, the kind that is sadly too rare in public life these days. What a refreshing contrast to the common egotism (raging insecurity) of many in top spots who are loathe to acknowledge the crucial contributions of others. I realize such display of class is intrinsically rewarding, but I must say it can carry a person a long ways toward living a rich life, most deservedly so.
Also I appreciate the class and social graces displayed by Mr. Nolte and other contributors here at BH,
(such as Robert J. Avrech), as well as their edifiying columns about film.
Among other ways that BH contributes to the culture, I hope that BH contributes effectively in reinforcing the value of old fashioned courtesy and civil discourse.
Thanks for hanging in there. The problem with postmodernism is that they reject other views on a basis which, according to postmodernism, is itself invalid. Postmodernists want the prestige and authority of foundationalism, in spite of their own denials of objectivity and universality. They better be forewarned: we've got their intellectual number, and have discovered (surprise!) that it's completely disconnected.
Hear! Hear! John is an inspiration and a great help-as are Andrew and Alex. Thank you, Patrick, for letting us all in on that conference call and for all the follow up work you've done!
Thank YOU Andrew! Keep up the fight…
John, whatever happened to that site you were guest-hosting for so long? They probably still have that 'we'll be right back' picture up. I can't even remember the name of it now! I was happy to have found you there and despite my initial unease at your move to the big time, I love the new site and come here at least once a day.
Hell, I remember Nolte when he was still in the comments section of the blog that shall not be named. Dirty Harry forever!
http://www.forgottenheroesthemovie.com John's review is on this page http://www.forgottenheroesthemovie.com/reviews/ the 10th review down.
What the heck, let's give it a shot.
Just ordered a copy.
I'm so glad to see a movement of brave, LA conservatives speaking up and becoming more and more mainstream. Thanks to you all for your insight in creating this vehicle and for your skill in catapulting it to the heights you've reached.
