The President’s Accidental Gift on Race

Less than a month after being confirmed as the nation’s attorney General, Eric H. Holder Jr. called out the American people as “essentially a nation of cowards” for refusing to talk openly about race.
So, thank you, professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and President Obama, for starting the long-awaited national discussion on black and white identity – while averting our attention from the cockamamie scheme to nationalize health care.
And kudos to the professor and the president for choosing Sgt. James Crowley of the Cambridge Police Department as the representative of the Caucasian-American side of this difficult and much-needed historic debate.
Poetry was at work as the archetypal racist white cop who, according to the admittedly fact-challenged president, “stupidly” arrested his “friend.” Sgt. Crowley waged a swift and effective public relations campaign that quashed the racism meme that Mr. Gates was recklessly pushing.
Sgt. Crowley, as it happens, is the Cambridge police force’s hand-picked racial profiling expert and was selected by a former black police commissioner. He also performed CPR on black basketball star Reggie Lewis, whose widow praised the public servant for doing everything he could to save her husband. Sgt. Crowley’s own police department immediately jumped to his defense in a picture-perfect multiracial photo op and press conference.
Even though Mr. Gates and Sgt. Crowley are poised to put their individual grievances to rest – over a beer negotiated by the president of the United States – the scope of the problem that brought them international attention lingers, underscoring the need for continued robust public dialogue.
We’re finally talking, Mr. Holder and Mr. Obama. Why stop now?
Of course, the attorney general is essentially right in his assessment. Much of America is petrified to bring up race, especially in public forums – the media, in particular. But for exactly the opposite reasons Mr. Holder, the Obama administration and the brain trust of modern liberalism assert.
Americans, especially non-blacks, are deeply fearful that the dynamic is predicated on an un-American premise: presumed guilt. Innocence, under the extra-constitutional reign of political correctness, liberalism’s brand of soft Shariah law, must be proved ex post facto.

Sgt. James Crowley is not Obama's friend and he is not the right skin color, so the racial and mental profiling was instantaneous: white, male, racist, stupid.
Now I understand what post-racial means. It means just what "change" means. Nada.
White-guilt mongering is BIG business for both white liberals and anti-white blacks. I hope discussion does continue and evolve on the subject of race, if only to put these shysters out of business.
If you want to dig a little further into professor Gates background there is video and websites detailing his views and thoughts on race in America, not pretty. There is also a so called 501c (3) he is in charge of, lots of questions. He will wish he had not used this incident to promote his new racial documentary about to air on PBS.
Racism has become the new McCarthyism. They don't have to prove racism to ruin ones career, public life and reputation. They just need Jessie Jackson or Al Sharpton calling a press conference to slap the label on the latest victim.
I'd just like to know how much that beer is going to cost us. Will Prof. Gates and Sgt. Crowley be paying their own travel expenses to visit the White House or will the taxpayers once again be picking up the tab?
Crowley would get into his pickup with his family, fill up and drive himself to D.C.. Gates would have a limo drive him to the airport where a Harvard University chartered jet will whisk him in comfort and "deserved and earned" luxury to D.C. Which "class" do most of us fall into? Ya, not the Gates elitist level…
To go one step further, poetry was at work and the stars were in alignment. One of the statements made to Sgt. Crowley by Mr. Gates was the officer had no idea of who he was "messing" with. So sweet. Little did the racist professor know, it was the other way around. He picked the wrong cop to "mess" with and as a result now has a snappy new mug shot to show to his adoring students.

Yes, if there is any karmic justice in the universe, the good professor will be exposed for the fraud which he is, sooner than later. Also, it is my sincere hope, the Cambridge PD release the audio tape of the arrest *before* the peacemaking-beer fest begins.
Furthermore, Sgt. Crowley will receive a public apology from both Mr. Gates and also from President Obama.
Anything short of that will be a sham and nothin' but BS.

A video has surfaced on YouTube of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. delivering a church speech in which he uses the N-word, rails against "racist historically white institutions in America" and accuses Newt Gingrich of attempting to block blacks from entering the middle class.
once again the curtain was drawn back on the wizard and we got to see him for what he really is. racism is racism, no matter what the color you are bashing.
I'm so annoyed by this huge blowup I'd rather not hear anymore about it (I know, I know–and yet here I am posting a comment). The whole idea of racial profiling struck me as idiotic from the moment I heard about it. Seriously? In Cambridge, MA, of all places? The day anyone there practices racial profiling (against blacks, at least) is the day Obama says he wants to privatize Social Security. And why did he have to shoot his mouth off about a local issue that is between no one but Professor Gates and the Cambridge P.D.? If he'd just left it alone, this would have been a YouTube sensation for a few days and that's it. And now they're all going to "have a beer" at the White House. Shoot me.
Keep whitey on the line, eh?
Otherwise, all the affirmative action will just dry up.
Is it too much to hope that Sgt. Crowley would have the good sense to politely, yet firmly, decline the meeting with Obama and Gates?
He has nothing to gain, at this point, from it and so very much to lose.

Very nicely said, Andrew. I was incredibly offended by the way "the narrative" was being played out in my local paper, The Scripps owned Knoxville News Sentinel. There were no editorial pieces, but two Associated Press stories in the Nation/World "news" section.
The first dealt with Gates saying he is "ready to move on" and how he hoped to use the incident to "improve fairness in the criminal judicial system." The second, labled ANALYSIS by Charles Barrington, AP writer. It essentially glossed over the unfairness of Obama's stupid comments while playing up the notion that he is uniquely positioned to lead a dialogue about racism.
Both you and Jimmy Arone have it right. The police did NOTHING WRONG. Both the president and the professor were the people bringin in the race card. Whites are expected to "listen" "apologize" "step down" for insensitive remarks. Blacks get to lecture. Ideally there would be financial reparations according to some. Others might say that is already happening disguised as some other part of "porkulus." I don't know whether these last two sentences are technically true or exaggerated. What I do know is I have had it with race baiting. I will not "apologize" for slavery since I never owned any and I had ancestors die in a war that ended up ending the institution of slavery in this country. Some may accuse me of racism, but I do not feel that way at all. I'm looking for a "Star Trek" "color blind" world and feel we will have trouble getting there as long as Jesse, Al. and others are invested in keeping the hate alive.
One other thought on this column.Andrew is carried by the Washington Times. I get a steady diet of Froma Harrup and Kathleen Parker. Given the earlier piece today on supporting what we believe in, I urge BH readers to support The Washington Times. It is one of the few papers that gives conservatives a fair shake.
The whole incident was blown out of proportion. Is every dispute going to be about racism when the people invoived are of different ethnicities?

Could it be that as soon as the police announced they were mulling the release of the on-scene communication tapes between the officer and headquarters, what little cognitive intelligence he possesses kicked in and reminded him of how he would sound on said tapes? Sgt Crowley should simply stay put in Cambridge. He doesn't have to do anything but say that he is needed at his job; which he is. Being 'invited' to the White House only serves to turn him into a political tool and photo op for the Won. It is a subtle ploy by Obama to get Crowley to 'confess' that he was 'guilty' of racial profiling and that the 'Won' is simply trying to get 'hard feelings' set aside. Frankly, I am sure that Holder and Patrick already have things in the works to make Crowley's life a living hell. From ''ethics"/ Internal Affairs investigations, to prosecution for violating Gate's 'civil rights'. All it takes is for one 'confidential source' to get things going.
The liberal uproar over his refusal would be deafening.

The thing is, there WAS racism involved in that situation. Gates was the racist. Obama was the racist. If they want a full accounting for racism there should be some push for them and others like them to see it and acknowledge it. It is not reverse racism. It is simply racism. It is ugly no matter the color of the skin of the person doing it.

As Jimmy Arone points out, neither the president nor the professor has or will apologize. The associated press has played this as Gates willing to move on and sees this as a teaching moment and the president being uniquely qualified to lead the discussion. He still sees this as both guys being partially responsible. The problem is, of course, they picked the wrong case to do so. The officer did nothing wrong. This one is on the professor and the president shot off his mouth and was wrong. He cannot admit to that and his spinners, with the able assistance of the main stream media are working overtime to see it gets glossed over.
Wanda, get a clue. It was sarcasm. I think I just pointed racism out in the comment I wrote unless you want me to go to Mr Sharpton, Mr Jackson, Mr Gates, Mr Obama, Mrs Obama, et al in person. It's things like this that make me wonder why anyone would even consider gong into Law Enforcement today. It's dangerous, the hours stink, the pay stinks and now our President is undermining the moral and authority of these men and woman. And quite frankly, those questions posed by the press are reviewed before they're asked at those press conferences….so Obama answered the way he did deliberately. Guilty until proven innocent huh? I suppose this is true. I imagine that there is much mistrust that those with a history of being oppressed or exploited have for others. As the expression, perhaps they "have a chip on their shoulder".

Andrew, well written piece. I only have one question that I would love anyone to answer….
How does this case have anything to do with racial profiling? If a neighbor calls 911 and tells police that two BLACK men are breaking into a house, are the cops suppose to start looking for suspicious white men in the area?
I mean, Skip Gates could have suggested that as an Irish Catholic, Sgt Cowley, was targeting him as a protestant and it would have made as much sense. I just read that the Black Congressional Caucus agrees with Skip that it was indeed racial profiling. I thought to profile was to randomly assume a minority was involved in a crime without any evidence or cause. But Gates was breaking into a house!!! Who were the cops supposed to question?
By all means, Andrew, let's have the dialogue on race, but I am very concerned that one side of the debate will commit a "Archie-Bunker style suicide" long before the "Dingbat" begins to make any sense whatsoever.

OMG, just when I thought there could be nothing more ridiculous and racially condescending than the "African-American Teacher of the Year" award they give at the school my mom teaches at, I'm proven wrong! You mentioned reparations. I'm actually in favor of that. I feel that anyone who was kept as a slave under United States law should be entitled to fair compensation. I also feel that anyone who owned slaves under United States law should be made to pay it.
But I'm pretty sure all those people are dead. I feel no need to apologize for what people were doing 100 years before I was born.
Sadly, people like Gates (and Obama, apparently) are still obsessed with their race. Whether that makes them technically "racist" depends, I suppose, on how you define the term. But I'm really not obsessed with race. I'm perfectly willing to accept anyone on his or her own personal merits, regardless of their skin color. And I resent people like Gates trying to pile his baggage on my back.

Well, they aren't really losing it. Any criticism of Obama's administration or personal behavior is "racist". I'm a "racist" because I can't appreciate Michelle's "transformational beauty". I didn't vote for Obama in the first place because I'm a "racist". If the dems lose their filibuster-proof majority after the mid-term elections, it will be due to a "racist" backlash against Obama's ebony awesomeness. Well, his creme brulee awesomeness, anyway. If – God forbid – Obama should actually lose his re-election campaign, it will be because of all us "racists" who don't want a black man in the White House, except for the housekeeping staff.

Was that a recent Zogby poll? Who would answer that honestly? But, yeah, those are definitely a tiny minority even down here in the South. I live a long walk from Pulaski, and most of the white people I know are far more "post racial" in their views than the majority of blacks that I know.

Obama accidently exposed his inner racist…it was just a matter of time. There is no way for the leftist apologizers in the media or the HuffPo's of this nation to twist this in a way that makes Obama look like anything other than what he is, an elitist Harvard snob…a snob of "color". This is about a blue collar guy and a "uppercrust" Professor, and the outcome that the elitist didn't like…let's ask ourselves, "what would Rev. Wright do?".

Obama made a racist assumption about an incident that had nothing whatsoever to do with race, other than the unhealthy obsession of his "friend" Professor Gates, and stuck his foot in his mouth during a national press conference.
That's the unvarnished truth. Now, Obama is trying to spin the incident positively and pretend that there was moral equivalency between the positions of Gates and Crowley. He should be ashamed of himself. The police officer did nothing wrong, and as the President of the United States of America, Obama needs to stand publicly in support of law enforcement and let his dumbass "friend" try to justify his own actions.
How am I a "coward" for saying that? It's as sincere as I know how to be. And I don't think for a second that a huge majority of Americans agree with me. A huge majority of Americans are freaking idiots who shouldn't be allowed to vote. And I couldn't care less about Jeanine Garafalo.

But we have been living in a nation that uses the "racist"label as a weapon and it is usually hurled at "whitey" as Mrs Obama calls us. If we want to talk about illegal immigration…"Racist." If we want to talk about how bad an idea it is to grant mortgages to low-income people who can't afford the payments…"Racist." If a white cop asks a black man for his ID…"Racist."
I'd love to start up a White Entertainment Television channel, or start a magazine called "Ivory" or maybe have a White Police Officers Association, but all that sort of stuff would be Racist. Al Sharpton would certainly be opposed. Jesse Jackson would sue me for not having enough minorities on the Board of Directors.

Now that the subject of racism has been broached, it's time for a SOUTHERN perspective. I would have hoped that a blackman who was the best and brightest and a peacemaker would have been elected to the office of POTUS. Instead, we conservatives saw a smooth talking, Pied Pipper, forced to the front. President Obama is a race-baiting bigot that is hell-bent on making somebody pay.
What did America get? The Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton/Jeremiah Wright movement got gasoline poured over hot coals and the fires of hatred have been stoked once again. Those of us that looked could see it coming: 20 years of belonging to Reverend Wright's church and the subjects that were "off-limits" during the presidential campaign were a harbinger for things to come. What the American people really got was the perfect example of a Carpet-Bagger directly from the post-War Between the States era. This presidency is about retribution. It's been fermenting for 143 years, waiting to be unleashed.
There will never be any chance at peace between the races. And likewise, there won't be another black president in my lifetime.
Ah, busted. Okay, okay the 8-10K is a Wikipedia/Conservapedia number. And, yeah, both sites have said that, as members generally keep their membership secret, it is hard to know for sure; 8-10K is just an estimate. But, just intuitively, I can't believe that it's much more than that if at all.
And thanks for the advice, but I don't think I'll hold my breath on this. I know it probably won't happen any time soon. I just wish to God that it would. It's just sad, people believing in something as terrible as racial oppression when it is really more perceived than real.
I did finally get around to sketching up a series of comics dealing with Mr. Holder's statement, though I never inked or colored it. Those of you who read this far into the comments, take a look at it here and remember that conservative humorists do happen on occasion.
