Boycott Greg Gutfield’s ‘Red Eye’
by Andrew BreitbartThis week’s Washington Times column:
“Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld” on the Fox News Channel must be boycotted or taken off the air. Its sexist, misogynist, homophobic, racist, speciesist and self-hating host must be maimed, lynched and/or killed.
If not, someone might be offended. And that cannot happen – especially now that President Obama is poised to make everything really great.
In an era of extreme political correctness, when almost everyone is offended by almost everything, and with self-appointed advocacy groups organized to find offense on behalf of almost everyone – offensively, without the majority in the group’s consent – it’s nice to know that there’s a place to go where everyone can be offended almost all of the time.
Even if it’s hidden on the offensive cable news network, according to offensive liberal watchdog David Brock’s Media Matters, and shown at an offensive hour – Monday to Friday, 3 a.m. EST.
Two years into its late, late, late-night (or early, early morning – depending on your biological clock) cable news run, “Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld” has solidified itself as television’s most reliably absurdist, unpredictable and laugh-provoking news hour.
It’s less a comedy competitor to “The Daily Show” – the budget’s too low, and Gutfeld isn’t a marm at heart – or an insomniac’s “The O’Reilly Factor” (Who cares what people who wake after noon think?) than it is a surrealistic “Fernwood 2-Night” (Fred Willard rocks!)
No topic of discussion – ethnic houseboys, torture pits, cannibalism as a “lifestyle choice,” seedy tricks in parks, allusions to drug abuse, etc. – is off-limits, and no ideology is predetermined. Show regulars Bill Schulz, a liberal; Andy Levy, a libertarian; and Mr. Gutfeld, a conservative, ensure that the show’s point of view isn’t rigged.
That means, unlike all other cable news shows, participants aren’t pitted to hate one another for disagreeing over farm bills, sex dolls and first-family fist bumps. It’s also the go-to show for the rigid and the joyless – those poor wonks at watchdog blogs whose only way of income is creating a universe of make-believe offensiveness.
“Red Eye” guarantees that their shrill cries of outrage keep their fridges stocked with hummus for another day.

Fox just announced a spin-off show: Brown-Eye with Andrew Breitbart.
Andy Levy Rulez!!!11!Eleven!
Tivo was invented for Red Eye. We on the left coast can view it at the just fine hour of 12 midnight. It rules.
I wuv unicorns!
Saw some clips online. Still not even close to justifying getting cable. Haven’t had cable for 8 years! Don’t miss it a bit. Everyone should drop it.
Gutfeld for president, or at least, community organizer.
Red Eye is the cable version of Firing Line – an honest and sophisticated discussion of the most important topics of the day among the leading lights of politics, the arts and business. NOT!!!!!
The most amazing thing is that Gutfeld can get Patti Ann Browne to work with him. I always figured anyone as classy as Patti Ann would know that spending that much time with a funny conservative might make her toxic among the elite in New York. Oh well, she can always blame her agent.
I love this show it is crazy, offbeat and sometimes just plain hilarious!! Also desides the regulars they often have many differant political views and some without a clue. Keep it coming!!
I love Red Eye because of its non-PC nature.
The Gregalogues are my favorite part (they remind me of Dennis Miller’s rants). The recent ones about about Keith Olbermann (especially if you read the transcript after watching it) and Henry Rollins were classic.
I can’t agree with you more, Andrew, and you’re completely right about political correctness. It’s a disease that defeats, among other things, humor and thinking.
Now try telling a Sarah Palin joke in here. I dare you.
Heh.
Andrew,
In one word “Never!”
I think Red Eye is doing some of the best cultural/political dissection around. Greg Gutfeld’s style is so distinctive; I find it very charming, strange, funny and wise, he’s unlike anyone else in entertainment news (quite an accomplishment). And because Greg is definitely an acquired taste, they really should give Red Eye a second look. Andy Levy is excellent and reason alone to watch the show.

dear gkenny,
ggut spoofs smugness (you know, like yours). he owns a mirror, so believe me, he can’t be smug. plus he has teeny, tiny vienna sausage-like fingers. although i’ve never heard that any of his houseboys has ever complained.
Love, Love, Love this show. And don’t forget Mrs. G, Greg’s crazy lovable Mom. She rocks!
Red Eye is the best, here in Australia it airs at 7pm but I am willing to watch it a couple of hours earlier to help it prosper. Red Eye is a place where we can all go and be satisfied.
ANDY WHAT THE HELL IS IMAGE VERIFICATION. TRIED TO SEND BURTS STUFF TO FRIENDS BUT COULD NOT GET PAST THE IMAGE STUFF. KONRAD
Well, in that case, I will stop enjoying this show myself, I will tell my friends to watch it too.
If they don’t like it – it now becomes a must watch.
I love “Red Eye.” I’m in Ca so I’m the lucky one in that it comes on at Midnight here. And let’s not forget the hotness that is Mike Baker. He is always a must see.
Andrew, I’d take you a little more seriously if I didn’t see you on the show quite so often.
I got your Greg Gutfeld theme song right chere –
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NvgLkuEtkA
On the other hand, Red Eye is what Jon Stewart and Keith Oberfuhrerheilmann secretly watch in their futile hopes of regrowing brains.
I have watched this show since its inception. The show is witty, fast paced politically incorrect and funny!
Greg is a great host, Bill and Levy are funny as well. My only regret is that Rachael Marsden isnt still with the show. Would like to see
more of S.E Cupp, she is smart, funny, and hot. Love it when she rolls her eyes
at Bills off the wall comments. This show is much funnier than the unfunny Jon Liebawitz,AKA as Jon Stewart. Keep up the Olberfake bashing-Keith you are like Hitler!
Jeff Tacoma,
I’m willing to give up a little of myself in your eyes in order to help the common good that is Red Eye. In addition to that, please don’t take me too seriously.
Andrew
I’m surprised at the number of Red Eye fans here and elsewhere who didn’t realize that your article was tongue-in(Bill’s)-cheek.
BTW the whole reason that I use my real first name here is that I saw you on Red Eye saying how much you hated it when people blogged and commented using fake names. I (half) agreed with you.
I, ahem, achieved the 2008 Red Eye viewer email of the year. (Something to do with Circus Peanuts and a hilarious accidental mispronunciation by Greg.)
One of my greatest achievements, and a reason for my friend and fellow-Red Eye aficionado Mark to be really jealous.
I’m Gutfeld’s Number One Fan (and, yes, I mean that I want to kidnap him, tie him to a bed and and chop off his feet).
Not to sound to high school-Obama Supporter-drooly here, but Gutfeld is not only funny, awesome at expressing conservative principles and great at mocking moonbats into apoplectic fits (his Huff-Po stuff should come with a seizure warning), but he’s also great at mocking himself, and he’s never mean or rude to his guests no matter how wackadoo lefty they might be he always treats them with respect and courtesy (and perhaps a snide comment). For all of the crassness of his show, it is one of the most respectful and open places on all of cable (or broadcast) news.
Also, when he wrinkles up his nose to read the teleprompter he looks just like that kid from A Christmas Story.
I find Red-Eye terribly juvenile – so that even its political incorrectness can compensate for it.
I was surprised to read an article by Gutfield in a conservative magazine and discover there is an intelligent adult in there hiding behind the stupid adolescent TV image.
Rey Eye is a NEVER miss show for me. I DVR it every night. It’s hilarious! And not to sound chauvinistic but he has the BEST looking women on that show! Natali Del Conte….. mmmmmmmmmmm
Seriously though, when they show repeats on the weekend or something like a stupid inauguration keeps Red Eye off the air for 5 days it kills me. I’m half a man without my Red Eye.
when i was a kid my favorite tv show was The Uncle Floyd Show.
Now that I’m all grown up, it’s Red Eye.
It’s that good!
“Boycott Greg Gutfeld’s Red Eye” (??)
Huh? Oh. You must mean:
“Houseboy Caught Greg Gutfeld’s Pink Eye”
Sarah Palin is driving down the street when she gets pulled over by Barack Obama. Obama asks her for her driver’s license. Palin searches around in her purse to no avail. Obama tells her that she’s looking for something small, thin, rectangular, and she can she herself on it. Palin pulls out a compact mirror, looks at it and says, “I found it”, and hands it to Obama. He looks at it and hands it right back to her and says, “Oh, I’m sorry, if I had known you were a Cop, I never would have pulled you over in the first place”.
Red Eye is the best kept secret on TV! The great injustice is that it’s not on earlier than 3am ET! Awesome article, Mr. Breitbart!
You know how they say 20% of college students get their news from the Daily Show, and to the media, it’s all good?
Gutfeld should fabricate a similar stat for RedEye … and watch them go apoplectic over it.
Carolina Yankee – January 25th, 2009 at 8:38 pm
I am so totally offended! People with red eyes are people too …
Emily? Is that you? Miss Emily Litella? Is it really you?
@John Moore
What is wrong with Juvenile? Believe it or not Conservatives are not uptight and without humor. Intelligence is the root of humor. You will find most truly funny and fun people are highly intelligent.
If Red Eye was playing in the Superbowl, their tailgate party would rub the asphalt right off the parking lot.
A Fernwood reference…YES! Red Eye is a good show, but it is an acquired taste. Luckily, they always put the hot woman in a miniskirt on the end just past the table, so when Bill says something useless, they just do the wide shot and you immediately forget he’s there.
Such a useless bunch of untalented talkies who pass off as entertainers.
The fondue dippers get off on the whiskey-soaked bread cubes. Greg needs to get a day job. The show should disappear or go on at 3 a.m. if it must continue for those who get off on this stupid humor.
It’s not really homophobic, they’re just making jokes. Nobody wants anyone to be beat up. He does have a point about something. Why do they keep making films about Nixon? They obviously hate the guy, but still, how long has it been. We’ve had two wars and two terroists attacks.
To this day, no one beyond Pat Sajek has denounced what happened to that Dutch Filmmaker. Why? Why are they being cowardly about it. He mentioned Van Gogh and I always wondered the same thing. These are people who complain about two seconds having to be cut from a film, this was a murder and a viscious one at that.
Daily Show, man that show just shows clips of other shows. That’s kind of weak.
Isn’t Glenn Kenny the host of “Sharp Stick in the Eye”?
RedEye is easily the funniest show on TV today. Kudos to FOX News for having the courage to air it. Love Love LOVE this show. Thank goodness it is on at 12 PST. The old 11 p.m. slot would be better though.
I enjoy Greg and Andy but Bill? I wish they’d replace him. Or let someone else sit where he sits every other night.
I thought I was already boycotting the program simply because it’s not very funny. The column was much better!
Pat – January 25th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
It is worth tuning in just to see Greg’s artwork. It’s magical!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I won one of the drawings last year
“They really should air it at midnight though. It deserves a larger audience, and, frankly, it beats the snot out of everything else that airs during the midnight to 1 AM slot.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Agreed.
Greg is very funny guy. Love his ditties on Fox.com.
I’m a longtime insomniac & found this show by accident about a yr. ago. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!! Anyone who deosn’t like it, don’t watch. Simple as that!
Doug Tennapel,
I resemble that! Tune in tonight… I will be on.
Comparisons to the “Daily Show” are misplaced. The “Daily Show” is un-intelligent, seldom humorous, and bitter. “Redeye” intelligent as well as funny and optimistic!
On the episode I saw last night, the guest was an ex-stripper turned novelist and millionaire-maker-via-hypnosis. She was asked if it was true that strippers didn’t date customers. She said they weren’t supposed to, but occasionally a customer falls through the cracks.
Had I been drinking milk, it would have been a shooter.
… for the rest, there’s Mastercard.
I find Jon Stewart unsufferably arrogant. He reminds me of the kids we used to rough up in high school. Small man, big mouth.
Got HBO for the Sopranos, got DVR for Red Eye. Greg, Andy – good; Bill – kinda suck.
Agreed, let the professor stay on O’Reily, he is not funny. Would like to
see Greg go after David Crock and Media Matters more, that lunatic Marx website!
Red Eye Is out of Dylans “Like A Rollin Stone” “When The Jugglers and The Clowns All Did Tricks For You”.
greg is my hero
Last week Megyn Kelly made her virgin appearance on Red Eye. More please, much more. *swoon*
I listen to Red Eye on Sirius/XM every evening at midnight. I have no idea what the opening segments are about, I don’t get to see Greg’s drawings (tho they sound lovely), and I don’t get to see what the guests look like (apparently they are all very hot). It is the funniest show out there. Conservatives and libertarians are much funnier than liberals and Dems.
I’m offended that no one is allowed to offend me anymore. Does anyone know what advocacy group I should be calling?
Red Eye is my favorite late night show since I discovered it. My only suggestion is that it needs more Andy Levy!
I posted a video of Greg Gutfeld’s cat jokes on YouTube check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwBnSfcjQQA
i don’t watch cable tv, but after i found this show online i love it. clever, witty, irreverent, hilarious, politically incorrect, and impromptu.. something little jonny stewart could only dream to be, and isn’t secure enough to have people with opposing views on as his regular co-hosting team. the hypocrisy in the washington times piece is amazing, though. liberals always bash anyone who isn’t with them for politically incorrect humor but chronically go there themselves.
Sorry. I guess I’m in the minority. Whereas I LOVE Big Hollywood and The Fabulous Mr. B…but regrets: simply cannot stand Red Eye. I used to produce morning radio in a major U.S. market in the 90s. Red Eye’s the same brand of lippy smart-ass jr.high stuff that gave us Big Numbers, too. Like Red eye, the content was rather like a glass of flat beer — which a frat boy doesn’t mind at all and willingly guzzles, too. BTW: I notice the majority of kudos are, indeed, from those wet-towel-whipping-in-the-locker-room guys. Whatevs! But I digressed: I eventually felt the radio gig was slowlyg sucking my soul out of me like a lamprey attached to the middle of my forehead. I had enuf with the poddy jokes, easy-laff potshots and predictable bratty buzzings that were followed by nerdy-boy giggle rants. I, uh, find it all TEDIOUS. So, I dodge the show. I feel like I gotta take a shower after watching it more than 9 minutes. Yet I read with fascination y’all having a love affair with it! Like a Cody Diablo screenplay, I find its hipness overly-written and a rather hollow, gab-spectacular, slot-filler. But I dig Miss Browne’s contributions!
Red Eye really needs to get a better time slot. I’m tired of watching crappy commercials that air in the middle of the night. How many times can a man watch an ad for a homeopathic arthritis medicine for dogs without going crazy.
Moesyslak, Bill is not gay, he just plays one on TV. He and the others have stated this many times. Way over the top homosexuality? No, just accept that you are not even close to correct on that point.
My wife and I are big fans and Red Eye is a staple of our DVR theater.
The show needs more PAB, especially “The Notorious PAB”. Can’t stop laughing when I hear her throw down a gangster rap opening to the show.
Agree that the Urban Studies guy could be on less often. Just not very funny or insightful. Not that he should be banned, but cut him down to once every 6 weeks. (Fill in with Rosen, ACarp, or Banderas).
DEFINITELY agree that FoxNews is being disrepectful of its viewers when they take it off to re-run some re-run of the nightly news. Take Hannity or Bill O off after 2400 CST, and use the slot for RedEye.
I get that Fox is using re-runs to cover both coasts, but man, they get a lot annoying when they start depriving me of a RedEye fix just to show something that they have already aired twice.
Lastly, this show so beats the Daily Show, its not even funny (but then neither is the Daily Show.) The one thing you can count on with TDS is Stewart turning a blind eye to ANYthing on the left, while making repetitive and dull jokes about ANYthing on the right. With RedEye, you get a mix of perspectives and what one guy won’t make fun of, someone else will.
The Gregalogues are great, “and if you don’t agree with me, then you sir, are worse than Hitla.”
Red Eye is the only place where you see the talking heads act like real people. Thank God for DVR.
While Professor Hill is not always funny (political topics) he often has the most memorable lines of the show (social issues).
Can’t we all just agree to focus our loathing at Bill?
Hey Glenn Kenny, leave us poor refugees from the Stalinist purge at Hollywood Elsewhere in peace! You’ve got Jeff “No Fatties, Puerto Ricans, Hicks, Red-Staters or People Who Know More Than I Do” Wells, D.Z. and BurmaShave, must you take everything else good and holy from us?
That’s what DVR’s are for……
Best show ever, if you get it. It really would be a shame if they slowed it down to appeal to a mass market. I really don’t mind the Professor being on it, or any one else that has opposing viewpoints. It just goes to show that conservatives will at least engage in an intelligent discussion. And really who dosen’t think that circus penis are not the best snack ever! Just go ask any pre-op street walking tranny hooker if you don’t believe me.
Well, the comments taught me one thing: The few leftoid trolls that bothered to try and disrupt the fun still don’t get how smarmy and self-righteous they are. If they did, they’d see their lame attempts at humor are right up there at the 5th grade level. E.g., “The fondue dippers get off on the whiskey-soaked bread cubes.” The wit! The charm! The infantile humor trying to sound sophisticated and failing miserably!
Dave S.,
I am going to pretend that you did not besmirch the good name of S.E. Cupp. As Wayne Campbell used to say, ” She will be mine. Oh Yes!!! SHE WILL BE MINE!!!”
I’m a UC Berkeley alum who attended public elementary and high schools that thought they were private prep schools. I get the humor in Aristophanes. Red Eye is funnier. Greg and the gang are intentionally sophomoric. John Stewart is sophomoric and just doesn’t know it. Gotta go. It’s almost midnight here in San Francisco, and my favorite show is about to come on.
“Red Eye” is the only show on TV where conservatives and liberals can share the set without yelling at each other. By keeping it more funny than topical, Gutfeld is able to steer panelists away from spouting talking points. That’s the real beauty of the show.
IMO, the best show on television.
Proof the Emmys are crap:
Mrs Gutfeld has never won, let alone been nominated. The moving “Visit to The Gynecologist’s Office” monologue totally kicked Meryl Streep’s ASS.
Count me in. I love it too. Mrs. Gutfeld first caught my attention while channel flipping, and I was instantly addicted. (I love the way Greg loves his mom – and what a good sport she is.) If this went mainstream the kids would instantly turn conservative – without realizing it, of course. I love the way Greg laughs at himself, and Bill is perfect – leave him alone. Andy is my idol. They bring out the best in their guests, and the above commenter is right – they treat everyone with respect, even while they’re laughing at them and with them. It’s the only thing on my DVR, and it’s perfect for the middle of the night when I can’t sleep. I agree it should go on Fox’s network channel and get more exposure. It seems that their left-wing guests kind of relax, and act like it’s OK to be non-PC once in a while.
Andy B – Thanks for this forum and congratulations on it’s success!

Great article AB. I've been DVR'ing this show since it's first few offerings and I like it, but I DO find it funnier in the middle of the night than afternoon.. lol
I also like his Five show as well for Perino, Guilfoyle and Tarantos mostly
but I do like Eric Bolling going back and forth with Suspenders Beckel, and Gutfeld IS funny. He's also lost a great amount of weight since the outset and looks much healthier.
