‘The Demands of Political Correctness’
by Adam BaldwinIn reply to a recent political and cultural controversy involving “Sesame Street,” Sesame Workshop Executive Vice President Miranda Barry wrote:
Jim Henson, Jon Stone, Frank Oz and others set a witty and silly tone for Sesame Street that our current writers work to maintain despite the demands of political correctness.
What then, specifically, are the demands of political correctness that Ms. Barry’s taxpayer-funded organization operates under?

What is Political Correctness?
For an exacting scholarly analyses of Political Correctness we can turn to Free Congress Foundation & William Lind’s The History of Political Correctness.
As Mr. Lind distills:
If we look at [Political Correctness] analytically, if we look at it historically, we quickly find out exactly what it is. Political Correctness is cultural Marxism. It is Marxism translated from economic into cultural terms.
Frank Ellis’ Political Correctness and the Theoretical Struggle:
…exposes the ideology behind political correctness and the role it plays in modern western society. Frank Ellis traces PC’s dark history from its invention by the Russian Soviets to its migration to the western world. Ellis also demonstrates how political correctness is being used to shut down debate and marginalise opponents of any social reform by branding them with unpopular labels. PC is destroying language and culture and making it impossible to critique what is happening in society.
With this history and scholarly definitions — and in the interest of convivial debate (and of course inevitable disagreement) — the following questions are posed in good faith and with the hope that Sesame Workshop might provide American taxpayers clarification and contextualization for the benefit of all concerned, especially for the children:
- What is Sesame Workshop’s definition of Political Correctness?
- When did Political Correctness enter Sesame Workshop’s criteria for its federal taxpayer-funded educational programs?
- Who does Sesame Workshop believe is responsible for instituting the demands of political correctness upon its administrators, Sesame Street writers, producers, cast, and ultimately its target audience of pre-school and elementary school children?
- Where can the public find Sesame Workshop’s instructional policies and guidelines regulating its practices regarding Political Correctness?
- How does Sesame Workshop believe its Political Correctness programming complies with widely accepted academic freedom ethics and standards that require varying scholarly viewpoints be given equal time?
- Why does Sesame Workshop currently feel constrained by the demands of Political Correctness?
- What are Sesame Workshop’s plans for future governance of Political Correctness?
Other recent examples and outcomes of the demands of Political Correctness upon the Arts, public education and American society illustrate the need to more closely scrutinize and explain this highly controversial (even deadly) political and cultural issue:
- The NEA’s coordinated falsehood with the White House that the organization’s infamous conference call “was not a means to promote any legislative agenda.
- ACORN’s tax and voter fraud activities and its CEO Bertha Lewis’ coordination with her “sister from another mister,” AFT’s Randi Weingarten.
- White House Communications Director Anita Dunn’s claim that Mao Tse Tung is one her ‘favorite political philosophers.’
- The Ft. Hood terrorist attack.
Political Correctness is a menacing form of viewpoint discrimination, an intolerant “heckler’s veto” deployed to stifle reasonable debate of controversial issues.
A varying viewpoint contributed by one commenter on my last post asserts:
“The ‘political correctness’ she [Ms. Barry] refers to is right wing political correctness. IE wingers who are hypersensitive and read marxist messages into everything.”
Fair enough?
Exit compound question: What is your definition of Political Correctness, and what demands do you think it places upon the Arts, public education, American institutions and American society?

Question to Executive Vice President Miranda Barry: What do you know of Political Correctness and when did you know it? Can you name anyone else who may be involved in Political Correctness? Would you be willing to testify to this?
PC = Leftist fundamentalism

I like the definition of PC as written by students at Texas A&M: "The premise that it is entirely feasible to pick up a turd by the clean end".
I also like the late Charlton Heston's definition: "Tyranny with manners".
What then, specifically, are the demands of political correctness that Ms. Barry’s taxpayer-funded organization operates under?
Whiners complaining about a joke on Fox would be one.
The irony is rich here.
Good article, Adam.
On a side note, I loved you as Hamilton on "Angel".
The demands of Political Correctness are in short. You will be good enough give up who you are, What you believe in and all that you know and hold to be true as you smile at the things and the people you hate. Oh yes and you will kindly lay down your life if need be rather than offend anyone ala Ft. Hood…..That'll be the F'in Day.
I like this quote by Theodore Dalrymple.
"Political correctness is communist propaganda writ small. In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, nor to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is to co-operate with evil, and in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to."
Go watch him as Jayne in "Firefly." His character is the polar opposite of politically correct, and that's what makes him so great.
Political Correctness:
The imposition of controls on speech or behavior that is counter to the position of any vocal (liberal) minority, for the purpose of neutralizing any viewpoint that may be in the majority, and intimidating those that may wish to present their personal views or positions.
George Orwell defined it well in "1984," only he called it Newspeak.
Truly awesome. Thanks for the research. And think how much of advertising is about instilling fear and fear of embarrassment (humiliation). No wonder mass media meshes with the philosophy.
I love that liberals are so blinded by their own stupidity that anything they cry foul over as either racism or bigotry or whatever is always correct, however if anybody in opposition (it's not limited to conservatives anymore) is offended or points something out as socialist or marxist, they're being hypersensitive.
They've had no problems giving Bush or Christians or Mormons every label in the book, but once it's turned around, it's because we need to calm down and we're blowing things out of proportion. Their defense is usually followed by calling us some sort of expletive or an insult that's equally infantile. Because that totally shows us how wrong we are.
Apparently so is the stupidity.
Political correctness: The act of disregarding the concept of freedom of speech because it might be considered offensive or dangerous.
It is usually accompanied by a willful ignorance of reality because reality and the presentation of facts have a habit of offending the groups which are "protected" under the rules political correctness.
Tyranny comes in many forms. This is but another more subtle one used to intimidate society into passivity and compliance. But, where is the law? Ask and public servant, "Under what law do you punish me for speaking my mind?" When they bluster and fumble, say "I thought so" and walk away. The US Constitution is the law of the land, not congress. Bravely stand up for liberty.
Political Correctness at one time only destroyed careers, the events at Fort Hood demonstrate that it now does both.
Beware of the political correctness/"climate change"/neo-socialist-communist nexus.
M."Gorby" Gorbachev the former General Secretary of the Communist Party embraces "climate change/global warming" – and criticising the so-called *science* is thus – politically incorrect.
This giant transfer of western wealth to cesspool masquerading as countries in the "third world" is pure socialism. That's why the 0bamaists embrace it, hug it, hold it to their busom.
That, and they are their friends are going to GET RICHER, WAY RICHER!!!! YAHOO!
Ive always said that political correctness was a grotesque corruption of anthropological principles that sought to observe a culture as objectively as possible. Anyone who is familiar with the history of Franz Boas and 'armchair anthropologists' knows there was a great deal of harm brought about by those who made comparisons between cultures with the intent of declaring one culture superior to another (often with the intent to justify genocide – Hitler employed this well). The intent of the scientist in anthropology was to remain objective and record how each culture came about – NOT pass judgement. But it has appalled me how the sociological element of this effort has been warped to divide and conquer and completely forgoe the scientific principles of anthropology. Sociologists like to group and classify and single out groups for labeling and ordering. I see this PCness as this…urge…as having gotten WAY out of hand. The directive to remain objective about a culture was intended for the anthropologist, with the understanding that 'all others' were simply acting within their cultural norm.
I understand now that anthropology has been taken over by this sociological prejudice and I am VERY glad I am no longer in those circles. I was young head full of mush in college, but even in looking back I can remember professors who were not as radical as the ones Im hearing about today. The focus I learned was about science and relying upon the objectivity of science to filter our work, not marxism and group politics.
So then you feel you should be free to spew any hateful garbage you wish, under any circumstances?
You willing to live with the consequences of that?
Political correctness is the attempt by the "Left" to marginalize those of us who think for ourselves, speak what we believe, and defend our right to do so. And they do this with smiles on their faces and daggers in their eyes.
I define PC as-
We can't make fun of anybody, except for those on the right.
We can't offend anybody, except for those on the right.
We have to show tolerance and respect for everyone, except for those on the right.
We have love and compassion for all races and sexual orientations, unless your a white male and/or have the wrong point of view.
Interesting analysis. Would you have the same position on the issue had Sesame Street called CNN the "Crappy News Network."
Some how I think not.
Theodore Dalrymple's essays at times can be long, tough reads, but he does have a sharp mind.
The next plateau, if you will, is the term "Political Correctness" will be discouraged by the left and defined as a right wing descriptive term. Like those on the right that insist on calling progressives, liberals, will also whine that subjects "everyone" have deemed settled like global weather change and Capitalism equals greed is settled and no longer up for debate is placed behind the PC veil. Strictly right wing meaningless terminology.
Political Correctness is cultural Marxism.
Interesting thought that does make sense. I'm more familiar with Liberation Theology which is basically the same thing. Marxism crouched in Christian terms. It's rampant in the Church under the guise of so called 'Peace and Social Justice,' but it's all the same.
The totality of Jesus' teachings in the Gospel proves that in spite of all his recorded words will gladly support violence in the name of establishing social justice.
Welcome home from the swamp Ms. Sharon!
Political Correctness = power and control for the leftist minority.
Yes, absolutely. The cure for "bad" speech is "good" speech. No censorship now or ever.
Is that armor you are wearing? I have to know. I wonder every time I read your posts.
Lord help you if you are a fat smoking white guy.
Political correctness has taken on a life of its own in recent years and it has now reached breaking point, IMHO. The "correct" message as percieved by one audience will always mesh with that of another.
"Abraham Lincoln " – "America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves. "
Keep telling people what they can/cant say, think, ware or display with pride, & society will turn.. Our freedoms of tradition & of expression are under attack from jumped up mini hitlers with quotas to fill and a burning desire to make it seem like they are doing something. Even if it is policeing our thoughts.
"Orwell, George – 1984 " ~ "Nothing was your own except the few cubic centimeters inside your skull."
D.
My Bodyguard ; ) Loved you.
My brother was a real life Clifford (bushy hair, tiny guy and all) in need of a Linderman. Unfortunately, he only had three older sisters to kick mean kids' butts. That never went over well for him.
Please don't project anything about me giving the O.K. on spewing hateful garbage. I'm saying don't go against yourself, don't give yourself up. In the vain hope of teasing out a smile on some cold face with the aspiration of being told "Your O.K." Your a Good Person" "I Like You" that I'm not willing to do. If you can fine. You'll find it's very hard on the knees and spine.
I still love anthropology/archaeology – I had good teachers, some of them were other students, not just the professors, but I am glad to be out of the swamp! I was fortunate to have "left" the system as it were before the dreck of "women's studies" et al became the rage (as if women really were separate creatures! That's when I knew things had gone bad.)
Political Correctness
Usage: noun
Abbreviated as P.C. or B.S.
1. The laws of moral and ethical relativism; all systems of cultures and thought are equal in value, steming from a perceived guilt from white liberals who believe that the Western Civilization is the root of all evil to the exclusion of all else.
2. The use of various euphemisms when communicating with people that have a hard time dealing with reality.
3. Something that the selectively perceptive left (see: insane) consistently aim to be in a debate to try and cover up the fact that they simply have no valid points.
4. An insidious guilt-trip placed on everyone so that reasonable people are afraid to say what everybody thinks
5. A way that we speak in America so we don't offend whining wimps.

I didn't mean the swamp of anthropology/archaeology, I meant from the swamp in those academic fields created by liberals for the sole purpose of ensuring nice cushy jobs that require nothing in the way of productivity.
As near as I can tell the sole purpose fro "women's studies" or any of those gobbeldy gook curriculum is to crank out more modern liberals in order to keep those programs running.
I've worked in the real world for going on 25 years, and I have yet to come across any job that would even remotely require and type "studies" grad.
PC is the deliberate misidentification of reality (aka: Lying), or deliberately overlooking some uncomfortable feature of reality (aka: Lying by omission), to make something seem more palatable.
The demands that PC puts on speech and the arts, is that, ultimately, Truth and Beauty are no longer the goals of the Arts – ask yourself when the last time was you saw a widely hailed item of Art, that struck you as being beautiful? Something may labeled as that, but in substance they'll be more Gritty and Blatant, than True and Beautiful.
The early dismissals of PC speak as just pinheads being silly, i.e."Janitorial Engineer" instead of janitor, missed the more subtle and dangerous results of PC – that it instills a tolerance not only for Lying, but for 'The ends justify the means', which is a key tenet of replacing the classical liberal understanding of Justice which our Founders had, for the preferred proregressive, marxist, goal of 'Fairness', which is key to being able to 'spread the wealth around'.
And of course, as we found out last week, habitually and deliberately overlooking the obvious truth, will eventually ensure that a definite evil will be passed by, without a single challenge, and with deadly results.
Btw, the pdf of William Lind's speech seems to have been chased out of it's original home at academia.org(go figure), but can be found here: “Political Correctness:” A Short History of an Ideology.
Lord help you if you are a stay-at-home mom who is pro-life and doesn't use contraceptives-the horror!
How about a tall thin occasional smoking guy?
Good call.
That sounds about right!!
It's refreshing to read your contributions here, Mr. Baldwin. I've enjoyed your work for a long time, particularly your compelling characters in the X-Files, Angel, and Firefly TV series. I had no idea you were one of those rarest of creatures; i.e., a conservative in Hollywood.
Hey all you PC nutjobs! MERRY CHRISTMAS!
That was a pretty impressive shot taking out the alien and saving the President.
He never even hesitated to ponder if the President was a democrat or a republican. That's duty and honor.
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
That means Congress can't shut him up. Where do you get the authority to demand it?
My definition:
You are from a political persuasion that I detest, so if you say anything that I can even remotely hang the title of hater on, I will. You are in my cross hairs.
It's not stupidity, it's hatred.
If they were really that stupid evolution would have ordered them out of the gene pool thousands of years ago.
It's because they are filled with such rage they will gladly say and do stupid things, because they are confident there are enough on their side to maintain their self esteem.
Woot!
Close but not quite.
It''s the act of removing language from the exchange of free ideas, in order to prevent their debate opponent from accessing their full arsenal.
When it comes to political debates, modern liberals insist they set the rules and the premise. That's to ensure the game is rigged and they win. This is just one tool to accomplish that.
I'm already a proud owner of the DVD of "Serenity" and the "Firefly" box-set.
And, "God Bless You!" It's fun to stick it to the man : )
Keep pounding away Adam, it’s working.
Never forget that Jesus was, for his time at least, a Leftie. Just an interesting thing to point out. Not that he has anything in common with marxists mark me.
"the following questions are posed in good faith and with the hope that Sesame Workshop might provide American taxpayers clarification and contextualization for the benefit of all concerned, especially for the children:
* What is Sesame Workshop’s definition of Political Correctness?"
Lol, I just find that kinda funny.
On a more serious note, I think saying Marxism is purely the economic side of it is misleading in my opinion. I think Marxism was conceived as a total game changer in all aspects of life by Marx Himself.
Go back to Alaska
!
You're going to have to convince me of that one Sir. I look forward to the debate!
I've read the Gospels and I find no reference to Jesus commanding his disciples and followers to use the power of government to force people to agree with them.
I do recall several readings where Jesus almost seems to try to drive those with out complete faith away, the whole many are called, few will be chosen, wheat and weeds thing.
Since it's religion, I wouldn't want to try to pigeon hole Christ into any single ideology. But if I was pressed, I'd say libertarianism.
Join if you want, and if you don't, no one will force you. It's all voluntary.
PC could be our undoing.
You're missing the point, 'Substance' … it isn't the fact that jokes about Fox News occur, it is the fact that jokes about othe news networks do not. Looking at things through a left-of-center lens (based on your many comments to these forums), I am not surprised that your assumption is that the Right wants opposing opinions shut out, the same way the PC movement has been so successful at doing. But in reality, that's not it at all. What bothers most of us is that jokes at the expense of the Right are pervasive, even to the point of appearing on a children's show, while jokes at the expense of the left are verboten. 'PC' insists on giving the ideas of the Left special protection and scrutiny which ideas on the Right do not enjoy. The point is not to give the Right the same repressive 'protection', but to strip it from the Left, let all thoughts compete in freely in the marketplace of ideas, and may the best ideology win.
I believe Political Correctness is that filter people feel placed on their mouths by the news and entertainment media and, thus, society at large. This filter keeps out any words or ideas that may be offensive to anyone who is not white, conservative, and/or Christian. This filter demands we elevate beliefs that were formerly considered heinous and denigrate those who hold traditional, moral values. The result is that if any non-PC values inadvertently slip through into our lives via the entertainment industry (such as "V") people are either amazed or horrified. This filter has no regard for the Truth, just the "feeeelings" of the Left.
Not Modern Liberalism, Lefty in the classical sense, as in merely change of any variety to tradition.
Maybe a better way of saying it, is Jesus was diametrically not conservative for his day.
Now, I was just pointing that out in terms of "Well this is kinda Interesting and Ironic"
As you said, Jesus does not say anything about "
commanding his disciples and followers to use the power of government to force people to agree with them"
in fact the most Jesus ever says is that they should pay their dues to the Roman Emporor.
the only Ideology we can pigeonhole Jesus into is Christianity.
Just an interesting Tidbit, though I knew it would be a conversation starter
Wisdom, from the man they call. . . . Jayne.
Seriously, no matter how ridiculous they may be, the demands of political correctness seem to hold sway. I'm beginning to think there may be only one solution.
Adam. . . . time to bring "Vera" out of storage, and do something fun. . . . (evil grin)
Being politically correct means always having to say your sorry.
Wow, Jayne from Firefly is a big enough actor to buck the system?
Postmodern Europe becoming a Muslim theocracy before our eyes shows what happens when PC goes unchallenged for too long.
As tragic as it was, the Ft. Hood shooting may lead to the positive result in more Americans realizing how dangerous a PC worldview truly is.
Political Correctness is nothing more than prejudice cleverly disguised as virtue.
Adam, thanks for this article. It really gave me insight and confirmed what I've always thought about you in all your movies… you are a douchebag.
Well, hmmm… you better not be white and you better smoke only in the bathroom stall, feet up on the seat and follow with a half tin of Altoids. And be sure to douse in Purell lest you contaminate.

Wow, really? That is the best you can do? Posting a comment like that with a username like CommonSense, is like Michael Moore nicknaming himself "Slim". You would better serve yourself and your opinion by just calling yourself –NonSense.
So you hate Alaska and Christmas? It is war, sir.
Ahaha….
The cowardly troll failed to give its definition of Political Correctness…..
Or, did it?
Political correctness is a knee-jerk reaction, pure and simple. But I think a lot of posters (and even perhaps you, Adam) might be surprised as to where it comes from. I would propose to you that you ask 100 black people, 100 Hispanic people, and 100 white people (50 men and 50 women for each group) how important it is to be politically correct. I'd bet the answer would floor you all.
This one fits…..
Political Correctness Is Social Dementia
Unless plain speaking is allowed, clear thinking is denied. There can be no good reason for denying freedom of expression, there is no case to rebut, only the empty slogans of people inspired by selfishness and unrestrained by morality. The proponents of this nonsense neither understand the implications of what they say, nor why they are saying it: they are insane.
"Baldwin" she said, I scowled, "No, no" she blurted, "The cool one."
Yup – She was right
"The Cool One!"
Make sure they all know this holiday season – and then give 'em some gracious love – we don't hate em here – remember that about our side.
I fart in your general direction!
"Substance" missing the point? Well that's a shocker.
First, Mr. Baldwin is not complaining that mocking Fox News violates his sense of political correctness. Rather, he is asking why a show which claims to follow the tenets of political correctness has no trouble poking fun at a conservative institution. He then asks for clarification of how the production company defines political correctness. The point that he is making is that political correctness is now about avoiding offending everyone. Rather, it is about avoiding offending everyone on the left.
Secondly, even if I were take your "whiners" comment at face value, it is most definitely not ironic. The word you were searching for was hypocritical.
John, you said that just the way I wish I could've. Good job!
Very good comment, Ken in Irvine — The word "ironic" is mostly misused, any time it's used at all. It's incorrectly used to mean coincidental, hypocritical and all sorts of things. It was most famously misused in Alanis Morissette's "Ironic."
PC is Americans fearing to articulate that Obamugabe is an evil, radical, anti-American, America hating, affirmative-action negro fraud. The same applies to his band of pirates. They are deliberately setting out to destroy America and Western culture. There it has been said.
Interestingly, Savage was discussing this tonight. He calls it Political Cowardness. (sic) As in someone too afraid to actually address the arguements(s) hides behide it to marginalize their opponent.
Political correctness is the only speech tolerated by those who wish it to be.
The greatest crime these days is offending or the possibility of perhaps offensive.
Once more, this time in English….
Hmmm… I'll bet on the high numbers coming from the White men… lowest from the Hispanics (not sure on the M/F odds there)… out of curiosity, do you have actual numbers behind that, or just guessing yourself?
Political correctness is like a ratchet – it only goes in one direction and it with each step it locks in place, unable to go back.
it is the fact that jokes about othe news networks do not.
There was no GNN in the sketch? No reporters given funny names? I am shocked.
In fact this meets any reasonable definition of irony, but I could certainly go with hypocrisy as well if I believed that Baldwin was smart enough to understand how silly his column is.
You know, what shows puppets make fun of is just not on my outrage meter.
I read the lyrics to the song Baldwin attacked in the previous post.
http://www.kovideo.net/lyrics/s/Sesame-Street/We-...
There's nothing sinister hidden in that song, read the lyrics. There's no there there. Ergo this "follow up" column is rendered null, void and pointless.
Political Correctness was taught to me, a white chick, in college, by other white people. When I got out into the real world with people who weren't always white, they were bemused. Apparently, I had it right in high school when I was writing a paper about Andrew Jackson's presidency. I used the terms "black people" & "white people", & a highly liberal peer reviewer said it seemed racist. I asked "Which part was racist? The word 'people'?" Descriptions are now racism? Tell that to Deaf people, whose entire language is made of descriptions. There IS NO PC in Deaf culture! (well, except for capitalizing "deaf" I 'spose).
PC demands we forgo description for muddling. I once asked a friend, thinking I was being sensitive, if she preferred to be called Latina or Chicana. She laughed at me and said she was Mexican. She didn't understand why people didn't just ask what country she came from originally. To brazenly quote Oprah, "Aha!" I had a little epiphany. God forbid we actually get to KNOW HUMAN BEINGS. So much easier to just lump them into whatever skin colour we think they might be. And then there's my half American, half Vietnamese friend that people insisted was Paiute. It's apparently more politically sensitive to assume someone is Paiute than to inquire as to their ancestry. Bizarre.
I think people get wiggy about race because folk like Hitler made extreme distinctions regarding race, right down to exactly what kind of white person one was. What they forget is that Hitler made that distinction for the purpose of killing people, where the rest of it use it as dinner conversation. Most of my American friends are one quarter 5 different things.
I guess Sesame Street avoids that whole conundrum by making their puppets furry, or orange. I mean, wtf is Bert for God's sake? No race, no incorrectness?
It seems that Mr Baldwin is ahead of you by a few hundred IQ points, SMG.
I've always thought political correctness was that stuff that some religious conservatives are prudish about, but it appears that liberals are capable of their own political correctness too. That's why I bow down to neither group.
I am gonna level your state until its flatter than Kansas. And once Im through with that, I'm gonna ban Christmas Trees from Government property! MWAHHAHAHAHAH
Voting Democrat is like shooting yourself in the foot.
PC is just another tool used in carving out the underlying agenda.Repress common sense, debate, judgment, etc.
I despise it really. It really is one of the biggest problems we have right now because it is so versatile it can be used anywhere.Seriously.Think of anything stupid that u wanna do and in an hour u could have a pretty good plan layout always using the PC excuse.
Ok so lets say I am an islamic extremist and I wanted to get trained to fly, board some planes and do terrible things.-done.
How about get in a high position in the military and shoot unarmed unsuspecting infidels? -done.
Get uneducated racist radical communists into the white house-sure no problem.
Reward lazy people with billions of dollars taken from the people who do work. done.
Applicable for just about everything bad.
End PC and let the chips fall where they may. That way no head games.Everyone knows where everyone stands and then real debate, compromise, and progress can begin.Stifling free speech and reverse racism just pisses people off.Maybe thats all part of it.Get everyone to choose sides and draw a line in the sand.
Political Correctness = Disguised Meaning
Garbage Man becomes Sanitation Engineer
Stupid becomes Intellectually Challenged
Wetback becomes Migrant Worker (or, heaven help us, Undocumented Immigrant)
Ward Heeler becomes Community Organizer
P.J. O'Rourke writes wonderful stuff about these oft-misleading terms.
JM
I love Peej
Political correctness = re-labelling the top of an access hole in the road as a 'personhole cover', calling a 'blackout' a 'brownout' because the former is apparently offensive [WTF? Show me any human on this planet whose skin is literally black], wondering what to call a female chairman [let HER decide, folks!], being tolerant of everyone ['except those dreadful XXXs'!].
I can't speak for how it may be affecting Americans, because I'm British [might have noticed by the spellings there!]. All I know is that in the UK, people can make verbal attacks/critiques of Christianity [fair enough, as long as the Christians may respond] but suddenly when it comes to Muslims or the Koran we have to walk on eggshells and 'not give offence' because of a few misguided fanatics. If a faith is true and good, it will stand up to reasoned, proper critical debate. And your God[dess], surely, is big enough to fight his/her own battles, or love you anyway, even if you do say something offensive.
For a completely un-PC British comic or two; may I direct people to Frankie Boyle [a man without fear!] and Marcus Brigstocke [somewhat left wing, but blisteringly funny] .
ah yes, another liberal exercising the art of liberal rewrite and diversion
the facts are not friends of liberals and it serves to require the constant hypocrisy of obama and company
LIBERAL HYPOCRISY gets in your way and makes you think that since you do it, then Real Americans must do so, also
obviously, your stupidity makes it truly suck to be you
because they are not allowed to make fun of your liberal hate America crowd
so, you have no need to pay attention for outrage, for the sake of your younguns
obviously, you are racist
cant have the majority allowed to voice such negativity about the minority – at least out loud and or in public
When I saw this piece this morning, I immediately thought I should post a link to a Youtube piece I recently watched (3 times) about the history of PC, but as I read, I see that you beat me to it.
If you haven't yet watched this long but very instructive and revealing video, get comfortable and pay attention. You'll be glad you took the time. It's chilling, especially the last bit which should scare the BeJesus out of anyone who loves individual freedom. Note the prominent Columbia University has taken in nurturing this seditious movement.
Here is another piece worth reading once you have watched this video:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_measures
It's about "Active Measures," a long-range plan implemented by the Soviets that has taken on a life of its own and seems to be thriving in our previously tolerant society. Essentially, it uses judo on liberal democracy to destroy our system through the freedoms in our Bill of Rights, but which can be exploited and turned into a means for us unconsciously to commit political suicide.
I'm American but one of my favorite shows to watch is Have I Got News For You. Thankfully, one fan in the UK uploads clips every week onto YouTube. Marcus Brigstocke was on Paul's team in the episode hosted by the great Brian Blessed. He was pretty funny (that whole episode was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen).
Brian: "Polish people are leaving the country and going back to Poland."
Marcus: "Yeah, going over there and leaving us jobs!"
GNN isn't a joke at the expense of CNN, though, is it? It's just a silly parody of the name without any sort of bias whatsoever, whereas the conservative organization in the joke is renamed Pox News, which references a type of disease. If it were just about being a fun, non-biased joke, they could have called it Box News. They could have called it Sox News and followed it with a baseball crack or two. Instead, they gave the liberal organization a neutral nickname, and they named the conservative organization after a contagious disease. You don't see a bias there at all?
Political correctness is the new name for suppression of free speech. Its use covers a whole host of subjects from political affiliations to race, religion and gender issues. Those who shout the longest and the loudest set the goalposts.
At its simplest it translates to 'lets not upset anyone' except those that have the right to be upset.
You cannot have freedom of speech and political correctness together; one has to go.
When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me "politically correct".
That's what "political correctness" is.

JM is either openly racist or completely ignorant of the fact that "wetback" is a racial slur. Join us in the 21st century sometime JM.
Here's an essay you will almost certainly not see in required reading in most of the university liberal arts departments these days:
Paul Johnson – "The Heartless Lovers of Humankind"
http://www.fortfreedom.org/h11.htm
I disagree, Cratchit. "Wetback" refers to what illegal immigrants do when they cross the Rio Grande to enter illegally. They get wet. It has nothing to do with their ethnicity, although most "wetbacks" seem to be part Mexican Indian, victims of the racist Spanish-descended elite who run that country and keep them subjugated and in poverty as they loot what resources that country has.
Any term, however benign, can be made to be racist, depending on the context and intent.
But, it's OK to call us evil white folk, "The Man," "Honky," "Slave Owners," "Whitey," and all manner of other lousy names even with the obvious intent to be racist.
You're engaging in PC, possibly unconsciously, which is a testament to how it has permeated our lives.
Political correctness is being on set, sitting in video village with headphones on, while the director and the make-up lady insult the hell out of America, daring any of the crew to open their mouths in opposition.
Currently the only people who are courageous enough to directly and vocally challenge political correctness are the true wackos – Neonazis, white supremacists, The Nation of Islam, hardcore rappers etc. In short, the criminal element. But as opposition to PC becomes progressively more criminalized we ordinary people may need to follow their lead in confronting it aggressively.
"When i ask why the poor have no food, they call me 'politically correct'".
No "they" don't–or at least they shouldn't. It's NOT politically correct to wonder why the poor have no food. That shows compassion, or at the very least curiosity. Notlhing "politically correct" about those attributes (and, BTW, the left does not even come close to owning either of them). The politically correct thing to say would be "Look at the blessed, chaste, pure, and blameless poor (economically disadvantaged?)–they are poor because rich white business owners are taking food out of their mouths" (with the subtext of "And there aren't enough saints like me to help them")
And if you steal my food to give it to someone you claim deserves it more than me, that makes you a thief. Or a liberal, but mostly a thief. And a coward, since liberals back up their thievery with the force of an armed sheriff and a tax collector, but still mostly a thief.
Was that politically incorrect?
Thank you for asking. And reading. That is a picture of legionnaire Titus Pullo from the tv series "Rome" and yes, he is wearing his armor. While I am not as good looking and muscular and don´t have his awesome fighting skills, I feel deep inside that I ought to. So the first step is to get an avatar. I guess the second step is to work out, become an ace swordsman and get a full head of hair but I´m not quite ready to take it.
It´s only stupid if it doesn´t work in their favor.
Well, ~laughs~ Thanks for clearing that up… and for giving me a good a.m. chuckle. I guess I need to go out and get an avatar. I will think about the next steps in MY transformation to Lara Croft Tomb Raider after I scarf down a waffle.

Perfect examples for political correctness in its final totalitarian form can be found it Jung Chang´s memory of life in China, "Wild Swans". Especially in the chapter "Famine". Here are some key quotes:
At this parade a slogan was put forward, "Capable women can make a meal without food", a reversal of a pragmatic ancient Chinese saying, "No matter how capable, a woman cannot make a meal without food." Exaggerated rhetoric had become concrete demands. Impossible fantasies were supposed to become reality.
[Chang gives numerous examples of absurd claims of food production - like cabbages weighing 500 pounds]
It was a time when telling fantasies to oneself as well as others, and believing them, was practised to an incredible degree. [...] A large part of the population was swept into this confused, crazy world. "Self-deception while deceiving others" gripped the nation
[Chang describe show this was reinforced by fear and unspeakable brutality against doubters]
Those who failed to match other people´s fantastic claims began to doubt and blame themselves. Under a dictatorship like Mao´s, where informtaion was withheld and fabricated, it was very difficult for ordinary people to have confidence in their own experience and knowledge. [...]
Trucks used to turn up at our compound carrying grinning peasants coming to report on some fantastic, record-breaking achievement. One day it was a monster cucumber half as long as the truck. Another time it was a tomato carried with difficulty by two children.
On another occasion there was a giant pig squeezed into a truck. The peasants claimed they had bred an actual pig this size. The pig was only made of papier-mache, but as a child I imagined that it was real. Maybe I was confused by the adults around me, who behaved as though all this were true. People had leaned to defy reason and to live with acting. The whole nation slid into doublespeak. Words became divorced from reality, responsibility and people´s real thoughts. Lies were told with ease because words had lost their meaning – and had ceased to be taken seriously by others.
I thought a brownout is a partial or incomplete blackout. But it is certainly not a stretch to believe that it might be a pc term. There are enough examples.
I'm thinking the Sesame Street lady's definition of political correctness, at least in this context, simply means "not offending anyone." Since Sesame Street's original purpose was to provide some sort of pre-school content to inner city (read "black and Hispanic") kids, it's obvious the show would be careful to avoid racial stereotypes and provide positive images of minorities. It's possible the show's writers, editors and advisers came under the influence of cultural Marxism in the late 70s and through the 80s, when that philosophy was the flavor of the month for intellectuals. But since I don't watch the show, I'll have to take your word for it.
Good observation. A valid scientific tool becomes, in the wrong hands, an ideological weapon.
I think it already is. Mention "PC" in a comment on a newspaper or liberal website and you'll get plenty of responses from the left. To them, PC is just a term made up by the right to mischaracterize and denigrate "progressive" ideas. They'll explain how the things we call PC are actually good for society, essentially American, or reasonable responses to right-wing extremism. And they'll mention that conservatives only use the term because they're afraid of "change." If provide examples of PC stifling freedom of speech or showing up its practitioners as authoritarian zealots, they'll claim that you misunderstood the situation or that the perpetrators may have gone too far but their hearts were in the right place. Or they'll set up a false dilemma, as the previous commenter did when he asked whether conservatives think "hate speech" should "be allowed." Shorthand thinking at its worst.
If you think liberals have a patent on the whole "love thy neighbor" thing, then maybe Jesus was a liberal. Admittedly, modern liberals are deeply concerned with the welfare of their fellow human beings – or at least they make noises like they are. But I agree with previous commenters: to Jesus and the early Christians, "love thy neighbor" was a PERSONAL commandment. I don't think he would have said "love they neighbor and force everyone else to love thy neighbor, too." He said "Render unto Caesar," "not as the world giveth, give I unto you," etc. But people interpret his words however they want. And they use his words to bludgeon people they disagree with. Not sure he would have liked that, either.
But you're right about one thing: Jesus was definitely opposed to the status quo. If Romans and the ruling Jewish sects were the conservatives of his day, then yeah, compared to them he was a liberal, progressive or radical. Or maybe he was just a counterculture figure or a bohemian.
Another difference: modern liberals have a lot of input into the government process. They can vote, persuade others how to vote, criticize the government, possibly even replace the government with something they think is better. In other words, it's realistic for them to believe they can use the government to advance their own agenda. I'm not sure such a possibility would have occurred to the average person in Jesus' day – especially someone whose country was dominated by the Roman empire. If these people wanted free schools or free health care or other "progressive" reforms, they wouldn't ask the Emperor to set them up and levy new taxes to pay for them.
True political correctness will be when the American people wake up and vote the current congress out of office.
Follow that up by removing a socialist boy president who runs around the world bowing to people.
One of the first laws the new congress in 2011 should pass is " The President of the United States, shall never bow to a foreign leader. "
" Jesus recorded words ? "
Did he text also ?
We on the right eventually lose the argument in other ways, without debate, the
educational system is a major perpetuator of PC along with the media.
Rush for instance adheres to the speech constraints tho he recognizes
what is happening. FOX also adheres to the constraints PC places on the media
tho they will at least discuss it while being guided by it. Intense pressure on Religion
to conform will be the final nail.
GNN isn't a joke at the expense of CNN, though, is it?
No of course not, since it meant Great News Network, right?
Boo hoo!
That's why he gets the big bucks to complain about puppet shows not meeting his standard of political correctness.
[...] destroying language and culture and making it impossible to critique what is happening in society.‘The Demands of Political Correctness’I like this quote by Theodore Dalrymple.“Political correctness is communist propaganda writ [...]
because they are not allowed to make fun of your liberal hate America crowd
Requiring them to be psychic to make fun of the visions in your head seems a little demanding.
Political correctness is advanced by those who subject themselves to taboos prohibited speech has been extended so that words with semantic value are excluded from language even if used for occasional impact rather than derogation.
We are also prohibited from addressing widespread cultural myths that prevent us from analysis of problems affecting this society. For example, there is the Supreme Court myth that disproportionate representation of a minority ipso facto demonstrates "discrimination.," and must be remedied. I watched a basketball game on TV yesterday and saw nine superb black players on the court and one white player. Blacks are disproportionately represented in this high paying field, and it seems that the highest salaries are paid to blacks Is this discrmination that requires remedy, or is it that blacks are employed in these jobs because their inherent talent and sill sets qualifies them for the jobs? Gosh, what a rediculous question.
Now, somehow there is the accepted myth that other characteristics and attributes that qualify people for jobs in other fields are just imaginary, and any disproportionate representation is the result of malevolent white actions. If this be so, why doesn't this prejudice manifest itself in representation and award in basketball.
Now that the average person now knows what " political correctness" is , how do we counter it. I would suggest a few things:
1. Challenge it intellectually.
2. Explain it's origins.
3. Write articles, television scripts, and books about it.
4. Relate it directly to Mao, Lenin, and Big Brother, etc. Use images, as this article does.
5. State that free people will protect free speech, with their life, if necessary.
6. It is so vital that it is the First Amendment to the USA Constitution. It is in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and it has full standing in international law. See Wikipedia for more.
7. Make a scene, when it will help make a point. Frighten the "liberals" and "progressives" back into their dens.
8. Make your statements boldly.
A little irony is that these comment threads are edited for content.

There's a really good case for both of those last two. Read the article. And post any definition of irony you'd care to post. Look:
Political Correctness is a menacing form of viewpoint discrimination, an intolerant “heckler’s veto” deployed to stifle reasonable debate of controversial issues.
How can you beat that after a bunch of articles complaining about the tone of a joke on a kiddie show?
I see you are being uprated for not being able to capitalize, punctuate, spell, write, or think. That's Big Hollywood.
"Jesus was definitely opposed to the status quo."
Exactly, and that's what makes him a leftist for his day. What he said had nothing to with Modern Liberalism.
You spelled "ratchet" incorrectly: it should be R A T – S H …
You are correct, an interesting conversation starter.
Because I run into liberation theology on more than a few occasions, I've spent some time on this subject. Modern liberals seem to insist they have a monopoly on "caring" for no other reason than they claim the label 'liberalism.'
My experience has been despite this assertion by modern liberals, they tend to be the cheapest, meanest, most miserly group I've ever run into. Notice the redest, poorest states, deep south, continuously prove to be the most generous when it comes to charitable donations, and, for example, Al Gore donates his used underwear he itemizes it on his taxes, and half the President's cabinet are tax cheats. They're nothing more than hot air.
I refuse to accept the premise that modern liberals have a claim to the label 'caring,' because of the label 'liberal'. They just don't. I can give you an example, I've actually debated a modern liberal who told me, he couldn't possibly be a racist (he was) because he was a democrat. He also added that since I was not a democrat, that was proof I was a racist. I refused to accept that.
It's also hard to nail down the exact definitions of what is liberalism, modern liberalism, classical liberalism and progressives, because one of the left's specialty is to constantly change the definition of terms, to their benefit. For example, not being a registered democrat is proof of racism.
For me, classical liberalism is on the order of Washington, Franklin, Madison, Adams, etc. And modern liberalism is simply warmed over communism/socialism/progressives which is basically statism. They will never be happy until every one is forced to live according to their rules.
And I agree completely "The only Ideology we can pigeonhole Jesus into is Christianity."
Leave the politics out of religion. Makes much more sense when you don't try to pigeon hole.
Admittedly, modern liberals are deeply concerned with the welfare of their fellow human beings – or at least they make noises like they are.
It's nothing but noise. The modern liberal Idiotous Modernus is completely convinced their duty to their fellow man ends at the voting booth. I have challenged many of them over the years to put their own money where their mouths are, and match what I actually do, and I get in response is I'm a racist because I'm not a democrat.
They really have nothing. Stop buying their argument that they do care more, simply by pulling the lever for "D".
You know what, I wouldn't give a damn either if I wasn't forced to pay for it.
And considering the royalties from toys, why the hell does Sesame Street need government to shove their hand in my wallet? They're richer than I will ever be.
It's technically called the Gospels. Pick up a Bible, open up to the New Testament, and its the first four books.
"he couldn't possibly be a racist (he was) because he was a democrat."
http://bostonreview.net/BR34.3/malhotra_margalit….
Look at the 4th Paragraph down. And cite that if you ever argue with that guy again lol.
And on top of that, considering much of the Democratic Party is made up of minorities, well, to put it bluntly, Minorities are consistently more racist than the rest of the population, African Americans being the best example. And on the other side of the spectrum, your got scumbag organizations like Planned Parenthood. Their founder Margeret Sanger was a racist of the Nazi Level. She herself claimed that one of the key objectives of her organization was to eliminate the "Negro" problem. Not to mention that the Democratic Party, was the party of Slavery and Segregation.
There is an overwhelming case, in my opinion, that Democrats are the racist ones.
So To me, Liberals are the exactly what they claim they are fighting against. Mental Slave Owners and Intolerant SOB's the whole lot of them.
Now to the rest of your response, as usual, could not agree more.
To me Modern Conservatism is an combination of Religious Orthodoxy and Classical Economic Liberalism. To my mind, we are another brand of Progressive, just a far more rational type.
Its kinda Ironic, because in the end, we arn't fighting against our Ideological opposites in Liberals, we are fighting against our estranged brothers. After all, the Founding Fathers and the
Tyrannical French Jacobin's are sons of the same ideology. Way way back, even Orthodox Catholic Philosophy of the Middle Ages is directly related through the great Greek Philosopher's to Marxism and Nazism.
But that's evil for you I guess, not an absence of Good, but a perversion of it.
Perhaps, like Thoreau, you will face me from a jail cell, yourself in prison due to the strength of your conviction that giant news organizations backed by transnational conglomerates should be immune to criticism by puppets who dwell in garbage cans.
Hmm, despite the fact that I probably disagree with you, that was F****** funny.
I don't know what to say except that you obviously do not know the definition of irony.
Adam – Awesome to see you writing here. You rocked in Firefly and on the X-Files. To your article – I agree with you that PC is a nasty ideology that has its roots in the work of Marcuse, and arguably even beyond that back to Lenin. However, to take devil's advocate here: "political correctness" is a term that seems to have a lot of meanings, from the more formal use by leftist ideologues in academia, to more mundane uses in everyday life that don't necessarily suggest leftist politics. I'm thinking that it's possible that the person you're quoting from Sesame Street may have meant the more mundane sense of the term of simply "non-offensive to children or their parents." I have no doubt that there are crazy lefties who've worked on Sesame Street, but my sense is that they are pretty much hampered by the demands to keep the show entertaining and educational. There's an article about it here: http://reason.com/archives/2009/10/23/the-way-to-...
In other words, you can't find a definition that would gainsay my claim. Good work Ken! Maybe you can rewrite the Wikipedia article to conform to your ideals.
If I generalized Hispanics (irrespective of their legality) as "Beaners" or "Taco Benders," I'd be guilty of a slur. … but I didn't.
"Wetback" refers directly to people who swam across the Rio Grande to get into Texas from Mexico and by extension to others who entered by illegally crossing our border. If you think that's racist, you could possibly dial down the sensitivity. I intend the term only as a general-purpose insult to a class of criminals — nothing more. Can we say "gang-banger," "crack-whore" and "bag lady"? (I hope they never get linguistic protection via PC.)
Best wishes,
JM
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
Nah, I stopped debating him, and wrote a firewall rule to make sure I never get another email from him again.
There is a significant number of modern liberals in the democratic party that just can not be reasoned with. It's impossible, and waste of time. Trying to debate them is like trying to teach a pig to dance. Wastes your time and annoys the ping.
My advice to all those on the right is to identify and then ignore these types, because they can't be reasoned with. In their opinion, if you don't agree with them, that's proof of how stupid you are.
Stick to debating and converting the ones that can be reasoned with, don't waste time on the others.
No, organizations sucking at the government teat, draining my hard earned tax dollars should not use my money to propagandize.
You want to support them, feel free, give them all your money, and let them do anything they want with it. I don't care.
If I refuse to pay my taxes, I lose my house, my property and probably end up in jail. Taxes under those threats of force have no business being used for political gains for one political faction.
Hey, I've got an idea! How about Sesame Street do a segment on how liberal abortion policies allow hospitals to take children who survive abortions and throw them in the garbage? Wouldn't that be fun? They've already got the garbage can! Suits my side of the argument. So why shouldn't I be all for it?
Because they receive federal funds from the government they should not be doing anything political. At all. Period.
It's a pretty simple concept. Picture the 2004 election. Would you have a problem with George Bush activating the national guard to go door to door to campaign for him?
Do your worst. I still get a PFD. XP

'Political Correctness,' Texas style [Michael Ledeen]
A friend e-mails to say that Texas A & M has an annual contest for the best definition of a contemporary expression. This year it was "political correctness." And here's the winner:
Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
Ahh, point taken. I can easily mistake their hatred for stupidity, but you totally hit the nail on the head.
I consider this service penance for all the years I spent on the left perfecting these obnoxious methods.
It's the least I can do. All these emperors, they have no clothes. And they deep down, probably realize it. So to cover that up, rage, insults, basic assiness.
Political correctness = Gospel of the untruthers
I believe their goal is a complete takeover in two years. Sites such as this give me hope they will not succeed. I hope they have underestimated the American people.
Ahh its a classic saying.
Ty Ty
Hmm. Who is this all-knowing person who decides what is politically correct or otherwise? Pretty soon, I wouldn't be surprised if Obama uses this to throw his enemies into jail. Actually, you know what? He probably already has and I just haven't heard about it.
Oh yeah. Good call.
I received this in an email, it quite accurately describes just how ridiculous political correctness has become.
