Honoring September 11th: We Will Prevail
by Adam BaldwinI recall vividly the profound sadness, anger and horror I felt the moment the first tower collapsed.
I was glued to the television that fateful American morning when Matt interrupted Tom & Katie to report: “We just saw a live picture of what seemed to be a portion of the building falling away from the World Trade Center.”
–
After the initial shock then realization that our nation had been attacked, suffered thousands of innocent civilians murdered at the hands of barbarians, and that America had been thrust into war — My mind hurtled back to an earlier reading of Tom Clancy’s gripping novel Executive Orders Debt of Honor.
In it, the author describes how a deranged commercial jet pilot — bent on revenge against America for WWII — crashes his 747 Jumbo jet into a joint session of Congress, thereby slaughtering nearly the entire American political leadership, save of course Mr. Clancy’s heroic protagonist, Jack Ryan.
Thus the attacks, while utterly shocking, did not impact in a complete surprise to me from out of the blue. My wife and young children on the other hand struggled to comprehend its reality and what it might portend — our community’s well-intentioned-school-emptying-handhold-chain-“peace”-vigils notwithstanding.
The confirmation of my own dread that our nation was destined for major military operations would arrive soon enough.
I had recently returned from working overseas in August 2001. During the trip, I’d had the privilege of spending time with active duty military personnel who had, during R&R, discreetly shared with me that their movements were then restricted because they were on alert due to some intercepted intelligence “chatter” indicating a certain ‘bin Laden terrorist organization was preparing an attack’.
However, they were unaware as to where in the world such an attack was specifically targeted – in hindsight, that was in no small part due to the now infamous Gorelick “wall” (that blinded CIA from FBI) constructed, and subsequently buttressed during previous administrations.
That alone is an absolute outrage. And to this day, it exposes as either insane, or treacherous (or both) any who would ever propose or sign on to the despicable “Truther” lunacies. A special hell is most certainly reserved for those who’d sign on to it as fifth columnists, fellow travelers, or useful idiots for purely ideological expediency in order to subvert their political enemies, the national security of America and Her moral exceptionalism both foreign and domestic.
The 9/11 attacks, were an cowardly act of terrorism that could have been better guarded against, perhaps even thwarted altogether absent Gorelick’s “wall”; since torn down by President George W. Bush and a nearly unanimous Congress that, for a fleeting moment in time, acted in a strong bipartisan manner to secure the nation from future such attacks by enacting such new laws as the Patriot Act.
It is an ongoing outrage and craven miscarriage of justice that 9/11 Commission panel-member, Ms. Gorelick and her bosses responsible for the construction of that nefarious “wall” evaded the witness chair, being thrown out of office, into ill repute or prison. Enough!
Eight years on, our nation remains engaged in the long war, “our War on Terror”, as President Obama’s spokesman reminds us.
–
Will we prevail? I have faith that we will despite the feverish hope-mongering of revisionists that instruct us to avoid the practice of comprehensive reexaminations of the events that drove us into our nation’s current hostilities.
It is vital to move ever forward, yet evasive of reality to counsel ignorance of mistakes past and their careful, truthful scrutiny, especially in such desperate matters as war and national security.
We owe that effort, along with our undying gratitude, to the heroic men and women in uniform past, present & future. Those who selflessly volunteer to sacrifice all in the service of securing our Liberty, Freedom and security from tyrannies lurking both within and without our nation’s borders.
We owe it to the memory of all who perished on September 11, 2001, and to their families who survive and carry onward.
The President’s student address this week rightfully advised, “you can’t let your failures define you – you have to let them teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently next time… You’ve got to practice.” Indeed.
Avoiding reflexive agreement with what he generally preaches, I encourage this as a time “you’ve got to practice” in solemn remembrance of September 11, 2001.
May God continue to bless the United States of America and all who serve to secure Her from tyranny’s evil in our long war against totalitarianism, and future battles over the horizon.
“Yet we are not afraid. Our cause is just, and worthy of sacrifice. Our nation is strong of heart, firm of purpose. Inspired by all the courage that has come before, we will meet our moment and we will prevail.” – President George W. Bush, October 11, 2001

Gibbs made a mistake — he failed to call the War on Terror by its new official designation.
But that's okay. Calling it "overseas contingency operations" would have been an even bigger mistake.
No, but I've reported several anti-Semitic comments by one of our trolls.
Jamie Gorelick is living proof that being liberal means never being held accountable for your stupidity, no matter how many die as a result.
Great post as always Adam. Our country is not and will not be the same after those deplorable events. And it's a shame that today is now called a National Day of Service instead of a National Day of Remembrance.
Well said, Adam. It was criminal that Gorelick sat on the 9/11 commission, rather than in the witness chair. Par for the course, however, since the Democrats have been desperate to cover up Clinton's feckless policies toward al Qaeda in the 90s.
from Time's James Poniewozik, on Glenn Beck: What he purportedly wants is to bring back our feeling of "unity." I remember that feeling. After 9/11, I remember hardcore liberal New Yorkers rallying behind Rudy Giuliani, saying nice things about President Bush when he spoke at the WTC ruins. I remember thousands of American flags being flown out of apartment and brownstone windows, not as political statements or in the you-better-prove-your-patriotism spirit of flag pins and Freedom Fries, but simply because we felt we Americans were all in this together.
So since March, what has Glenn Beck been doing to re-establish that sense of nonpartisan national brotherhood? Calling President Obama a racist, declaring that the government was bringing fascism upon us, asking his fans to dig up dirt on political figures he doesn't like, and predicting civil-war-like uprisings. Because that's how you bring people together ….
You want to bring back the feeling of national unity and civility, Glenn Beck? You could start by not using this tragedy as your personal political platform.
Obama is an Alinsky-worshipping drone and supposed government servant who demagogues 'racism' and divisiveness from the presidential bully pulpit.
While Beck is a private citizen applying Alinsky's Rules for Radicals to Obama on national television.
See the difference?
The 'Gorelick Wall' was an effort by Jamie Gorelick to prevent agencies from comparing notes with each other and discovering some of the many very questionable dealings and criminal activities the Clinton's were involved in to one degree or another.

Yes, but how many people had to agree that it was a good idea? Or was Gorelick omnipotent in the execution of such an idea? Hard to believe there was only one hornet in the nest.
Even better!!!
They seem to be out in full force today–why I can't imagine. Opel-what's-his-face is deranged, and that's all there is to it.
Great piece, Mr. Baldwin; I forgive you for watching NBC. I was watching Fox News that morning, one that I will never forget.
Thank you, President Bush, for understanding the danger, and the task at hand; I was eventually able to sleep again, but like many others, have never forgot.
Not sleeping much these days.
I work with one Muslim. He's misogynistic, offensive on several different levels, pretty lazy and unattractive. He parrots the obligatory "Palestinians are the victims" line. He hates homosexuals. I don't think he's a terrorist.
Every other day I want to slap him because he's irritating. Today, I felt a touch sorry for him because I think deep down inside, he knows his religion is pretty crappy.
In some ways, Obama's UNITING people- uniting them in their disgust and horror at his inept, naive helmsmanship.
Y'know… the Lefties had SUCH a great time over the past several years with BusHitler, that I think I'll start running with….
ObaMao!
Thank you, Adam. I've enjoyed your columns, but this one was special. I've never forgiven and I've never forgotten. Eight years ago, three thousand men, women and children. . .most of them my fellow Americans. . .were murdered in what can only be described as an atrocity. Not a tragedy, but an atrocity. Inflammatory words? I suppose. But they're also honest.
It's also a bittersweet day. . .today is my niece's birthday. She's nine years old. Just a year old when this atrocity took place. I hope and pray that she will never experience what we did that day. The rage, the heartbreak, the utter helplessness that so many of us felt.
So to answer your question with a question. What has Obama done to bridge the divide? The answer is NOTHING. Just name calling and dismissing those who don't agree with him.
These libs won't see that, except for the hardcore left, Obama's been turning people off at a record pace. And they want to act like it's everyone elses fault or that they're just racist. It can't be the fact that he's trying to tank our economy. How can you think otherwise when someone keeps running up the bill on his daddy's credit card and won't stop, while nearly admitting it's dumb to do so? I feel that we will get hit again because of a kumbaya mentality that's come over our foreign policy. Hope not.
I was in the cafeteria of my work when it fell. Everyone stopped and you could hear a pin drop after the gasps of disbelief.
We've been safe for over 8 years (knock on wood) and hopefully we'll keep the streak going despite the lax direction this congress and administration have taken us in. Worrying more about political correctness and going after the people who have kept us safe (the CIA and military).
I remember Steve Doocey broke in and told us about the first plane hitting the building and not knowing what was going on. By the time I got to work, the other one had hit.
[...] In it, the author describes how a deranged coRead more at http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/abaldwin/2009/09/11/honoring-september-11th-we-will-prevail/ [...]

I wish I could give you ten thumbs-up. Alas, it only allows me one.
Wait a minute!
You're so hell-bent on your Glenn Beck tirade…that you posted the same thing twice? In the same thread?!
Your brilliance underwhelms me.
It's probably because:
1) Townhall.com has been purging them from the 9/11 threads in honor of the day and out of respect for patriotic Americans' feelings. (Tomorrow, TH reverts back to a liberal-troll sandbox.)
2) Liberal trolls want instinctively to slink into their spider-holes on this day, shrinking from even their own evil moral relativism, but of late the copious amount of Obamapologies has emboldened them.
Something has been turning over and over in my mind lately.
This administration is a PRIME target for another terrorist attack like 9/11 was. Why?
All over the world, this administration is viewed as weak. We (by "we" I mean the U.S. as helmed by this administration!) do not recognize or acknowledge the threat posed by Al Qaeda or any other Muslim extremist groups.
We have not sealed, much less protected our borders from terrorists seeking to come in.
We do not adequately inspect cargo coming into our ports.
We apologize everywhere for our "wrongdoings" and "aggression".
This weakness, coupled with a perceived apostasy on Obama's part (raised Muslim, went to a Muslim school in Indonesia where he would have been COMPELLED to recite the Shahada probably daily) makes the extremists HATE Obama. Bush was an agressor, but at least he was a MAN. Say what you will about those barbarians; they respect strength.
He's in love with himself. Thinks he's intelligent. Very delusional, very needy. I advise treating him a sone does a tapeworm. Starve him of food (in his case, attention) and eventually he will wither or learn to post better stuff.
Technically speaking, the deranged (Japanese) pilot flew into the capital after Japan losing WWIII in the book "Debt of Honor", which set up the events in "Executive Orders". Small point, I know, but just want to keep things straight…
I was watching Fox, too, and was shaving when I heard something about a plane hitting one of the towers and thought, "Somebody's going to be in trouble", already sure there had been some deaths. Then, all shaved and clean, I came into the living room to see what was going on when I saw the second place shoot in from the right side of the screen into the other tower. I thought, "That was on purpose." And I sat on my coffee table staring at the TV for the next two hours. I work at home and I never made it to my drawing table all day because I felt sick.
"The TRUTH shall cut the wicked as a two-edged sword" !!!!!!!
I'm so glad Adam Baldwin is no relation to Alec, Daniel, Billy or Stevie. I've always liked his acting and the characters he portrayed.
Now, I'm glad to see him express himself in confidence in America. Alec can move to France, but I want Adam here with us, making movies and tv shows.
Sounds like many traditional Christians. They beat women that don't sit in the back of the bus in Israel.
http://haaretz.com/hasen/pages/ShArt.jhtml?itemNo...
Christians? That article was about Jews.
I think that all the time.
Alas.
With all the hot-button activity against ACORN going on, they aren't at their usual busy trying to show pimps and ho's how to evade taxes on their new brothels sporting undocumented underage girls forced into sex slavery.
Besides, they just might need a new career change. ACORN has been cut off from the Census.
That will last about as long as Obama's service in the WH.
Which as short as it looks like its going to be, wasn't short enough…
Ouch.
That works…
I was thinking of Adam today…great American. Good to see him speaking out this way. I will always remember that day. The phone waking us up, my husband (at that time a homicide detective), called in to work as all 'cops' were as a precaution. Waking the kids, telling them that we were witnessing 'history in the making' and knowing it wasn't just a physical act of violence against us a people, but a spiritual attack. We knew.
God Bless you and yours Adam, hope to see you in November.
~Suzi
Thank you Adam for posting this.
It is an ongoing outrage and craven miscarriage of justice that 9/11 Commission panel-member, Ms. Gorelick and her bosses responsible for the construction of that nefarious “wall” evaded the witness chair, being thrown out of office, into ill repute or prison. Enough!
Yes, in remembering 9/11, it is good to examine the political enemies within as well as without. What possible good could Gorelick have imagined, and what superlative language could she have employed, so as to make someone agree that a "wall" between info gathering agencies was a good idea?
Let's send in a 20 year-old journalism student and a film maker to find out. They seem to be more effective than Michael Steele and the Republicans combined.
.
Beck's actually been begging to stop the divide. Obama's been doing nothing BUT dividing people. Obama and his lackey's have done nothing but degrade those who disagree with them. Calling people who don't protest as a profession as many liberals do, Nazi's, astroturfers (from the people who ship SEIU thugs to these events), teabaggers and many other insults. Do I think Obama's a racist? On the liberal level, yes.

Do I think Obama's a racist? On the liberal level, yes. He went to a church of a racist for over 20 years. He knows damn well what Wright is about. People in these towns know who these people are. We had a guy in Omaha, Ernie Chambers, who is along the lines of Wright and everyone in that town knows who he is. Obama's playing stupid, which is becoming easier for him with each passing day.
9/11 is my daughter's birthday. She was 16 the day the towers fell.
My parents [both deceased by then] vividly remembered the Blitz and seeing craters in places like London. There are a fair percentage of Brits who understand the US' shock, the horror, the aftermath. I have a friend in Manhattan who was late to work that day and thereby probably saved her life. I met Pastor Martin Hauser when he visited the UK [I think I've remembered his name correctly] whose church stands in the shadow of the towers. They opened the church doors and took in lots of people, giving what aid they could.
The world is smaller than we [perhaps] think. I stand with those who seek peace, true justice, equality and liberty. 'No man is an island'. Therefore I stand with you, Adam.
Bright blessings; always.
I remember watching the news in shock and disbelief as the attack on the towers was shown and reported. In amongst the horror and devastation were the bravest men and women who searched for and cared for survivors.
A few years later I visited the site where so many had lost there lives. There's an eerie calm and reverence; the memorial tiles made by school children brings a lump to the throat.
The terrorists cannot and will not win, not while the American spirit is strong and united, and not while there are men like you Adam who care so passionately and are willing to speak out.
What an insightful blog. I only have personal memories to share. I am very thankful that there is an attempt to stop all terrorism, but sad that it is coming at the cost of thousands of lives. It's hard to fathom it's been 8 years. When I see young teens today, they don't have the same awareness as adults. They were too young to know the horrors we felt watching and waiting. 9/11 has become akin to the Titanic, a horrible disaster, but one drifting far into the past. With time the memories fade, but when I dwell, I can still feel as if I'm right there.
I worked in downtown Brooklyn right on the waterfront. I had just started the job over the summer. I distinctly remember it was a gorgeous, sunny day with just a little chill in the air. I worked in a school, so when the dust sort of settled, we had to first make sure the children and mentally disabled adults we treated got out safely and on the buses home. For some parents it was impossible for them to come in person with all the snarled traffic. I had to man the switchboard and every light was lit up. I spent over an hour calming parents and relatives on the phone and even as they came in. Nobody had any clue what would happen next. Our little, old brick building was situated smack in the middle between the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge. Some thought for sure they were the next targets. If that had been the case, we wouldn't have stood a chance.
As a person of strong conviction and faith I kept my calm and even managed to share some comforting scriptures with co-workers and families. When we were allowed to leave the premises, my friend and I ran to a place we would feel safe, the main headquarters of the Watchtower Society buildings a few blocks away, (We are Jehovah's Witnesses.) The organization was allowing people in by the hundreds who had struggled from off the bridge from Manhattan, letting them use phones, wash-up, eat, rest, etc. The Red Cross was thankfully situated right off the bridge and for the first time I had seen their doors actually open! Everybody throughout the city showed fellow feeling and opened stores, doors and facilities to the 'escapees.'
The days and weeks that followed were miserable in New York. The morning commutes were deadly silent, The whole world was in stunned disbelief. For the next few years until I left I was on alert. As I approached the underpass on my walk from the train, I would get queasy and freeze up and it became a habit to stare at the bridges and watch the skies. For days, burnt patches of notes and papers would land in the yards of my complex, blown in from the wind.
This tragedy also brought the worst out in many people. A dear friend of mine who was working and sweeping the streets of my neighborhood was nearly shot in the head. A white speeding van had passed by and were trying to aim at the innocent roofers above him. Deep rooted prejudices came to the fore all around, there were cruel signs on doors/lawns and neighbors who were once friendly turned cold shoulders and suspicious. At the same token, more people than ever were united against this barbaric threat to life. 9-11 was a terrible tragedy that should never be forgotten, or repeated.
A "special Hell", indeed.
Keep up the good work, AB. BTW, nice quote from Obama's speech. Can't argue with that.
And I've known a Muslim since college who is a libertarian who has no problem socializing with Christians and Jews. His wife doesn't wear a headscarf. I've met other Muslims like that, too. Not all Muslims are radical jerks. Some are, but it's wrong to assume that all are or to treat all Muslims badly.
Operation Northwoods…
I was on the phone with my wife watching a local NYC area newscast with a camera pointing north at the two towers and there was a could of white smoke. Suddenly, I could see the Empire State Building through the cloud where it was blocked by the South Tower moments before, and told my wife that I think the tower just collapsed. What the local New York City media showed that day was very disturbing because, early on, they showed people hanging out of the windows and clinging to the outside of the building waving their arms and jackets for attention. Some estimates are that maybe 200 people fell or jumped to their deaths that day.
Excuse me??? What universe do *you* live in, RickyUnreal? Many? Many??? Really???? Maybe you should lay off the hallucinogenic drugs, man.
Today he was talking about rooting out corruption. He said the GOPers need to stop griping about the Democrats and fix their own party, and that the Democrats need to stop whining about the GOP and focus on fixing the Democratic Party.
" advise treating him a sone does a tapeworm. Starve him of food (in his case, attention) and eventually he will wither"
so how is the weather down there at Abu Grabe?
You're not dismissed because you're not agreed with because you're a lib, you're dismissed when you either repeat talking points, spout conspiracies or bring up points that are easily disproved. When you do bring up good points, people here do interact with you – I've seen it. Believe it or not, I believe conservatives are much more open minded than liberals. Conservatives will give you the time of day if you don't come off as a kook. This isn't the Huffington Post, DailyKos or Democrat Underground that are infested with people that hate America, anyone who disagrees with them or dare I say, themselves. The people here, I've found, are a pretty jolly bunch who will interface with you. I and most people here won't call someone a name unless they are blatantly screwy and those are our hit and run trolls who never show up again.
Obama is pushing his agenda with nearly 80% of people liking their current insurance. His poll numbers have dropped faster than any president since they started polling. Tell me where Obama's reached across the aisle, as he said he would? He hasn't. Bush did more to reach across the aisle than Obama has and it pissed a lot of us off. He let Ted Kennedy write legislation that he could sign off on and ol' Teddy still called him names. I don't know why you people have a problem with Cheney? He's an honorable guy. It stems from Halliburton – a company that has been used by most of the presidents in the modern era. He sold his shares in it and quit when running with Bush. He has no ties left to them, yet the conspiracies keep dogging him. I guess it also stems from the fact that he sounds rational when speaking.
We are supposed to be partisan. If not, this country would be swing so far one way or the other that we'd have anarchy. Not everything that goes in front of congress HAS to pass. I hope this travesty of socialization goes down in flames. Why kill the system for 12 million people instead of finding a way to cover them? That's not Obama and the Democrat's intention. It IS to governmentalize (scrabble word) healthcare. They've all said it. It's not to fix it, it's to take it over.
Abu Ghraib wasn't torture. My brother went through more humiliation pledging for a fraternity.
Abu Ghraib wasn't torture. My brother went through more humiliation pledging for a fraternity. It wasn't right, but it wasn't torture.
When United 93 came out I felt that out of duty I should watch it. I think it conveyed the true horror of what the passengers dealt with that day. I think that is why the movie wasn't a big success – it was too realistic.
I have since done some reading on 9/11 and recommend 102 Minutes to read what true heroism was on that day displayed by Americans who thought they were just having another day at work.
Touching History was about 9/11 from Air Traffic Control's perspective. What an eye opener. While both airliners were heading to NYC, the controllers had the United pilot l;ook for the missing American Airlines pilot because the transponder was off. Minutes later the United pilot stopped answering; they had stormed the cockpit that quickly.
And there was an airliner that were it not for the quick thinking of the pilots while on the ground in Newark, would have hit the White House or Congress.
While taxiing out on the tarmac, they saw the burning Towers in the distance and because ATC was still vague as to what was going on (they were still trying to understand it), the pilot decided to taxi back and tell the passengers they had a mechanical malfunction.
There were some al Queda terrorists on board.
9/11 brought out the best in Americans that day – from the F16 pilots at Langley and base commander who decided on their own to forget the long chain of command and arm the fighters, to the heroic passengers of Flight 93.
There are many who have revferted to a 9/10 mode but not me. And not you.
well you are trying to dismiss me because you don't agree with me. what's wrong with that? isn't that what you are supposed to do with someone who you disagree with?
if Obama said: "Well I disagree with you, but that's okay. You can win the debate anyway". Well that would be totally wimpy, now wouldn't it? That's not what he's supposed to do as a politician. That's not what he was elected to do.
"Bridging the divide" is something that needs to happen when there's a 50/50 split without a lot of people in the middle. But if Obama pushes his agenda through, and it seems to me he's going to pull it off, its because he HAS unified enough people in the middle with his base on the left.
That's partisian enough for me. For those who cannot ever hope to bring to his camp? No, he shouldn't waist his time. That's not what partisian means anyway. Partisianship is a two way street. There are many on the right – think of them as the Tom Delays or Dick Cheneys of the spectrum – that were never and will never be interested in compromise. And no, no one trying unify anyone should bother with those types.
You would think, Todd, after all the outrage ginned up over some dumbass MPs getting their DeSade on with terrorists, that the dummies would have at LEAST learned to spell the name of the prison right. But no.
Even with the internet right in front of them- no need to go get a dictionary or an encyclopedia- can't be bothered to go look it up.
And they wonder why they keep FAILING.
You can rely on the left to always change the subject. Specifically, make us the subject.
Here are some things you might want to wrestle with:
Bush has been called worse things than Obama, and a lot closer to 9/11.
Not just by media people but by Democrat officials and the activist groups affiliated with them. Did you oppose that? No, of course you applauded it, unity be damned.
Bush never showed anything but grace and tolerance for the jerks who threw mud at him every day.
Obama went after his "enemies list" even before he was elected and never stopped, calling out individual citizens by name. And unlike Beck, he ran for office on being a uniter. Beck is doing his job. Obama isn´t doing his job. One is a guy on tv. The other is President of the US.
You will never deal honestly with of these facts, which is why you can´t convince anybody with a brain.
Don´t let him change the subject. This is an Obama drone complained that a guy on freaking cable tv isn´t doing enough to bring the country together while his beloved thug administration is busy undermining our democracy. That´s the issue. Not us.
Spell check is incredible as is Google! So easy a liberal could use it!
Did you know that Controlled Demolitions Inc got the $3-billion govt contract to "demolish" WTC "after" 9/11. CDI bombed 7,000 govt buildings using explosives, as seen on History Channel's "Demolitions" broadcast summer of 2001.
Have you seen WTC7 "collapse" in 7 seconds, after NOT being hit by an aircraft?
Have you read Pentagon's Operation Northwoods, declassified as a result of Oliver Stone's JFK documentary?
