‘Global Citizenship’: An Unsustainable Social Injustice
by Adam Baldwin“Why in an age when so many have acted only in pursuit of narrowest self-interest have the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines of this generation volunteered all that they have on behalf of others… Why have they been willing to bear the heaviest burden?” – President Barack Obama, Memorial Day 2009
Good questions, Mr. President.
One answer is that those American heroes certainly did not sacrifice their all to secure the Blessings of Liberty for self-interested public school employees to recruit, re-educate, politicize and socially transform our Posterity — American school children — into “Global Citizens” that campaign in the name of environmental “Sustainability.”
People familiar with modern public education should be well aware by now that one of the ‘Re-Thinking’ pursuits in K-12 school districts these days is the values inculcation of belief systems that sustain “global citizenship.”
This political mission is commonly advocated while suppressing and/or demonizing varying, skeptical viewpoints — to which students are lawfully and ethically entitled under national and statewide academic freedom codes and regulations.
Global citizenship is a postmodernist incarnation of Cosmopolitanism and “world citizenship,” one of a number of controversial political causes for which William Carr’s National Education Association advocated in the 1950s – back when the NEA began promoting the notion that the United Nations was the only hope of mankind.
Mr. Carr once wrote: “Teach those attitudes which will result, ultimately in the creation of a world citizenship and world government.”
Sustainability a.k.a., “sustainable development” crystallized in the United Nation’s Brundtland Report. It states, in part:
‘Sustainable development’ is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”; “An additional person in an industrial country consumes far more and places far greater pressure on natural resources than an additional person in the Third World” and “in the final analysis, sustainable development must rest on political will.
DE-GROWTHERS OF THE WORLD UNITE!
Wither General Motors and the incandescent light bulb…
Of course, acknowledgement of natural resource conservation and humanity’s place in ecological systems is an important aspect of elementary education.
But, the administration of dis-informational, faith-based political values systems (in the name of ‘science’) — to the exclusion of scientific method’s required skepticism and educational ethics’ practice of varying viewpoints — is, at the very least, unprofessional and deserving of vigilant critical scrutiny.
Statist canon like “social justice,” “global citizenship,” environmental “sustainability” and “multicultural education” are now pervasive in American schools, but are not sustaining captive young minds.
Parents, not educators, have the right to decide values, articles of faith and creeds for their children. Of course, children are free to make up their own minds whether to accept them over time. But it is not the job of public servant educators to undermine or contradict parents. That would be hostile.
Students do not attend public school so that teachers can make them hate American culture, society and their own species; that the human race is some kind of dangerous animal that must be culled by Planned Parenthood, or world government.
It’s bad enough when what they teach is false. They also lay extreme guilt trips on children that make them question whether they are killing our species and planet.
Such mind-numbing is a hostile act intended to brown/blackout common sense, faith, familial bonds, logic and reason from ‘green’ minds.
Wither ‘question authority’ and ‘dissent is patriotic’?
Small wonder charter and home-schooling are now such successful growth industries nationwide (against which – surprise! – the NEA et al. politically oppose funding).
Teach your children well…
How to impact positive change?
The same as one would were a public school or teacher discovered proselytizing religious scripture on the taxpayers’ dime.
Teach yourself well, as well.
Investigate and de-code these politically (not educationally) charged buzzwords and creeds, and specifically how they are being unprofessionally, unethically, even unlawfully propagated in your community’s public education system.
Access and read your local school district’s policies and state education codes and regulations concerning controversial issues, educational ethics, political neutrality and academic freedom.
Lodge formal complaints where appropriate. Follow-up in writing with your superintendent and school board when your district’s mission plan and/or teachers enact similar bullying as previously reported here, here, and here.
Unless of course you feel that America’s students – our Posterity – should not be burdened with varying viewpoints in public school, and that ‘this is one that’s no longer a debate.’
“If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn’t thinking.” – Gen. George S. Patton

You know, one question is never asked by these "global citizen" types: Who will be in charge?
That's one of the primary reasons I'd like to send my children to a private school, if I could afford it.
Well said Mr. Baldwin. I am private school educated and my parents were always involved in my schooling. They always wanted to know what I was learning and how I was doing. The problem we have is increasing numbers of parents using school as a way to get out of raising their kids and increasing numbers of teachers using schools as some sort of indoctrination center.
"Who will be in charge?"
The un-elected elitists of the UN, of course. North Korea and Cuba should together have more say on the issue of "global justice" than the United States, or so believeth the Disciples of the Dear Leader.
I'm not one of the knee-jerk anti-UN types–the UN is great when it functions as a non-binding debate society. The Security Council occasionally serves a useful function, as the Korean War and overthrow of Saddam show.
When the bureacratic appointees to the UN get in to the business of setting global policy and international law, thereby over-turning national sovereignty, the UN is WAY over-stepping its bounds.
Just logging in to swoon. Now I'll go read the post. . .
Private education is enjoying healthy growth because of the problems you've addressed. I teach at a private school, and the freedom of expression in the classroom is something that I and the students value in equal measure. Many public schools are glorified prisons these days – the ability to choose your child's education is more important than ever.
This is a finely-crafted piece of commentary, marred only by the fact that in my head, I was unable to stop hearing it read by Jayne Cobb. That's an odd visual, right there.
Yeah Ellis – the best thing about teaching in a private school, for me, is the concurrent Firefly / American Western unit.
I'll be in my bunk.
*ahem* Sorry for the earlier giddiness. After reading this excellent post, however, I'm afraid the real swoon is to find such clear-thinking and firm writing style.
Unfortunately, as long as we have abdicated the raising of our own children and sacrificed their training on the altar of a second income and cushy lifestyle, we should not be surprised that the future belongs to ones whose cradle was rocked by single unemployed moms and underwritten by Father State; trained by Alisnky and Ayers and the educational Mafia.
Great post from a great American and great actor!
Another fine piece, well done.
But careful Mr. Baldwin, you may start to be known more for your clear and firm writing style as much as your clear and firm acting. . .hey I DO see a simularity. . .
Well look at Linderman, all growed up and speaking REAL truth to power. Well said.
I am fortunate enough to be able to send my daughters to a Christian school, but several of my good friends have children in the PS system. They are in a constant state of de-programming.
I'm comfortable enough in my heterosexuality to agree with you, Joan. Adam's a good lookin' dude.
And concerning his article, I don't have kids, but if I ever do, I WILL find a way to do the private school thing. My sister's kids are already indoctrinated (they live in Portland, OR…say no more). Sad, really.
Parents, not educators, have the right to decide values, articles of faith and creeds for their children. Of course, children are free to make up their own minds whether to accept them over time. But it is not the job of public servant educators to undermine or contradict parents. That would be hostile.
Careful, Adam.. you might be seen as an extremist for proposing this train of thought!
My wife who is a P.S. kindergarten teacher is always having to attend meetings on social justice and given heinous books to read promoting nonsense. But the problem is that there is always an underlying philosophy being taught. We've suppressed the religious one with the idea that secular is neutral. Secular is not neutral. It is an aggressive philosophy that will not tolerate dissent.
Adam Baldwin sir, you are a treasure! Our schools are terrifying, and sadly, not enough parents are taking enough of an interest in what's going on in those walls.
All of my friends who have children homeschool them. I really believe that homeschooled kids are going to be key to the future of this country.
Great read Adam! Instilling patriotism, national pride, honor, are the responsibility of the parents. I live in a district that votes 88% to 92% Republican in the past few elections. Our schools have names like Freedom, Liberty, Warriors, American Exceptionalism is alive and well where I live, school kids start the day with The Pledge of Allegiance, god forbid. The NEA is dangerous to America, and like any union becomes more corrupt the closer you rise to the top, they become a self serving monster that must be fed. Many inner city schools have become nothing more than holding pens for future wards of the state, and this is sad. Stay involved with your kids and grandkids people it matters.
This is an amazing piece of writing. Clear. Thoughtful. And most of all, thought-provoking.
You sir may have a future in leadership, you have my vote already.
There is a great article in the LA Times (I know right?) on American Indian Public Charter school in Oakland.
"We are looking for hard working people who believe in free market capitalism. . . . Multicultural specialists, ultra liberal zealots and college-tainted oppression liberators need not apply."
The average academic performance index of their main school is 967 out of 1000. The statewide average is below 750 and low income schools (which American Indian Public is one) is 650. So, you have to ask yourself, is it about getting the best education for your children or is it about keeping unqualified liberal unionized teachers in a job?
Obama thinks he will be King of the Globe, after 8 years of destroying the U.S. he hates!
it is of particular interest that Mr Baldwin points out the NEA and founder William Carr as a source of concern.
Because they are a concern. The NEA is almost single handedly responsible for the left wing indoctrination that our children are receiving, mostly under the radar, in the public schools. Although he retired in 1972, he was an advocate of the NEA policy of 'mentoring'; meaning they are not there to educate as much as inculcate the young. If you read the NEA's screed 'Goals 2000' you will see the classic marxist scheme of turning children against their parents and making them wards of the state- a pathway to proper 'world citizenship'…
Sooner or later our citizenry will smell the coffee and either throw these people out or better yet, pull their children out of these secular left breeding grounds and get a real education. There is still time…
Swooning here, too, Joan! Handsome, smart, AND a conservative thinker, what more could a woman want? Thank you, Mr. Baldwin. I love you in Chuck.
I have already read the article and he is right on. I have been in public education for 30 years, and I am more and more disturbed about the diversity message and sick to death of hearing "green" and global warming coming out of the mouths of our teachers. Scary. I used to be a tried and true member of NEA, but after I started to become more politically aware ( I am a late bloomer AND I voted for Carter, TWICE! So ashamed.) and realized that the organization was backing John Kerry, I had had enough and quit.
Well, let's say a student is one of three (or more) children in a family, and a teacher uses that student's public school classroom to inculcate the values of population "sustainability" by teaching that parents who have more than two children are "irresponsible over-consumers" that place an unsustainable burden on planet earth that will lead to the killing of the planet.
Would it be "extremist" for a student or parent to lodge a complaint against that teacher?
I think not.
The Supreme Court has weighed in on values inculcation. And, while the Court gives wide latitude to local school districts on how they inculcate community values, the values in question are clearly those of America's democratic heritage and the values of civic education… not unsustainable, fashionable postmodernist incarnations concocted to undermine those traditional values in educators' self-interested pursuit of agitating and creating self-loathing students alienated from their God, family and country.
Here's a good paper on the subject:

this is one of my biggest fears, angst, as well. adam please start a website or focus group or something especially for the L.A. area. where parents can go, have meetings, discuss & plan attendance at various LAUSD board meetings. especially in the social history & textbook area.
i'm trying to put together a website that is for kids too that dispells the public education mantras, something simple & easy to read, dispelling ridiculous stuff. 1 simple thing, my child was learning that American Indians were peaceful hippies living in communes until white people came. I said to her, Do you think they were not warlike? Didn't fight amongst each other? When I asked her that, the common sense of it, had lifted her burden of guilt instantly! Simple stuff like that.
Where is this district and are there available first-time buyer homes?
If the NEA has their way, A.B… yep, that would be extremist.. because the "teachers know what's better for your kids in this global community than the parents do".
Indoctrination has been at the top of the list in the concerns fo my wife and I. Our son is almost 4 and in a few years will be school age. Suffice it to say, we've been researching the means for Home Schooling quite vigorously.
Your point is well taken; be it public school, private school or home school, it is we the parents that will have the greatest affect on our children's education and upbringing. Our involvement and participation is the razor edged sword that can effectively counter all the harm intended by the NEA.
Consider a student that is one of three (or more) children in a family, and a teacher uses that student's public school classroom to inculcate the values of population "sustainability" by teaching that parents who have more than two children are "irresponsible over-consumers" that place an unsustainable burden on planet earth that will lead to the killing of the planet.
Would it be "extremist" for a student or parent to lodge a complaint against that teacher?

Anyone who does not think as you, is a war criminal? Nice, I love the tolerance on the left.
Actually, the school was founded by a pacifist organization and continues to stress the importance of nonviolence to the student body. No dice, Auntie.
However, I did find a nice recipe for pie that you'll appreciate if you e-mail me.
The exact reason my daughter attends the local Catholic high school.
One time when she was in the Catholic middle school, she came home with a permission slip. New York State dept. of education wanted our permission to "test" one of their global warming scams passing as education.
That went right in the garbage!

Pacifism is Warmongering!
Another sick example of Statist Indoctrination is "The Story of Stuff". From the NYT:
"The video was created by Annie Leonard, a former Greenpeace employee… who paints a picture of how American habits result in forests being felled, mountaintops being destroyed, water being polluted and people and animals being poisoned….
"More than 7,000 schools, churches and others have ordered a DVD version, and hundreds of teachers have written Ms. Leonard to say they have assigned students to view it on the Web."
I recommend watching the critique of the video someone did on youtube:

BTW Great article Mr. Baldwin!
Heh, ain't irrational 'logic' fun?
http://sites.nea.org/parents/index.html
One of the primary policies of all public school boards is that parents/guardians are their children’s first and most influential teachers and that sustained parent involvement in the education of their children contributes greatly to student achievement and a positive school environment.
It is the rogue teachers – and there are many – that need scrutiny. Of course, complainants must reman vigilant to ensure proper enforcement of policy/regulations.
If not us, who? If not now, when?
Any interested community member can lodge a complaint against a teacher for just cause.
We all pay taxes, therefore we should al be interested.
YMMV.
An excellent article and as Mr Baldwin notes this foolishness has been going on for nearly 60 years. We will all pay the price one day for our lack of public outcry. Knowledge of the world and her peoples is a wonderful thing but not at the expense of knowledge about the United States, her culture, her history, and her institutions. Why is it this country seems to be the only one on this planet to pursue such folly?
If you're a taxpayer, you're paying for these schools in your community.
Why not take a little time to challenge their non-compliances and violations?
All you have to do, as an interested community member, is request a complaint form. Start the complaint process, and see where it leads.
If not us, who? If not now, when?
Well said Mr. Baldwin. I recently pulled my 7 year old twins to homeschool after Oregon and Texas failed them. The teacher in Oregon had them coming home from Kinder telling me I couldn't drink "Diet Coke, cuz caffeine is a DRUG"
but they couldn't write their letters! Then, we just moved this year to Austin, TX and I put them in an Internationale Baccalaureate grade school. Worst mistake I ever made! The focus is a program that was started for Diplomat's children. The May First Spring Party had a huge focus on The Labor Parties around the world! Yikes!
The boys are doing much better now. Keep up the great posts!
Whoaaaaa….there cowboy…..
You sound like parents are in control of their children's education and not the state…..
It comes pretty close to HATE speech………
Better check for listening devices in your house….
You know how much the state dislikes personal responsibility………………………………………….!!!!!
How horrifically disturbing.
Geoff…just exactly how many children do you have ?????
Yes, Devil's Advocate is usually very spot-on with his YouTube stuff. People should demand that his critique be shown alongside Leonard's video.
Thank you for your presumptions Geoff,
Unfortunately, you've missed the point (ironically, due to your own apparent narrow beliefs).
Public school policy and regulations entitle students to varying viewpoints. Teachers are required to provide them in an objective and professional manner.
And, no… I meant 'wither' as in: to fade or waste.
Thank you for your opinions.
Do you ever contribute anything useful to this site, antifascist (laughable name, incidentally, considering your political beliefs). You want to help the environment, pal? Then drop dead. Your fat ass ought to make good compost.
And how much experience do you have with the public school system and the children it works with? I've spent time on the inside as a teacher. I've seen the so-called learning approaches that are supposed to teach our kids to read. It's no wonder that now that I'm on the outside I see so many people who can't use an apostrophe to save their lives.
School spend too much time teaching self-esteem, and not enough time teaching learning skills. They certainly don't teach real history. No one knows the important details about American history anymore.
Please do it before he ever goes. I regret letting them get to my boys. I just pulled them in April and have found a huge amount of support in yahoo groups. There are "officially" 2.9 million of us! We are in Austin and my boys are learning so much more now.
homeschooling has taken a huge upswing- a 'surge' if you will… and it has caught the attention of the Current Administration. You cannot have a population of Eloi if smart parents take responsibility and raise dynamic leaders. This issue terrifies the Left, and watch their allies in congress tackle this issue head on. This presents an existential threat to total control of the civilian populace and will not be tolerated.
This is going to get interesting…
if you cherish their future you can't afford NOT to…
The National Association of Scholars have written extensively about the doctrines of sustainability, social justice, multiculturalism, and global citizenship in education today. See http://www.nas.org/polArticles.cfm?doc_id=697 and http://www.nas.org/polArticles.cfm?doc_id=787 for two examples.
"First of all, the tenets you mention are based on science and reason and comprise the best of humanity's philosophic thinking." The tenets he addresses are 'social science' and I've never seen them conform to science or reason although I'll admit they're heavy in philosophy. Unfortunately, they're light in reality. "Second, as a vigilant parent, you will always have the upper hand with regard to how your children learn and develop values." That statement is patently false if a child attends public school. If the child is homeschooled or attends a private school I would agree. Public schools, with the help of utopian minded teachers and parents, have become almost impervious to parental inputs. Finally, complicit public school teachers are only part of the issue. Text books are a larger problem.
In high school, which wasn't that long ago for me, my US History teacher described himself as a "radical liberal" and repeatedly refered to southerners as "inbred hicks," thereby promoting the view that only liberal people on the coasts/in the Northeast are intelligent. He wasn't that bad because he let me tell him, "No, you're an idiot." It became a kind of running joke: "Hey kids, don't tell Thorien what I said about Southerners!" And of course, someone would tell me and I'd have to pwn him with logic in front of the class.
The WORST HS teacher I had was my AP European History teacher, who had some stupid label for himself that translated to "retard" ("Neo-Marxist," I think). He spewed all kinds of ridiculous stuff, like how "Communism just hasn't been tried in a way that works yet," and my personal favorite, "I tell my daughter 'Don't get pregnant.'"
"But Mr. N-M," said I, "you're her dad. Shouldn't you tell her not to do the thing that causes women to get pregnant instead of instructing her not to have a reasonable result from engaging in that act?"
Mr. N-M only repeated himself: "I tell her, 'Don't get pregnant.'"
Uh huh. Really. "Hey, what's Phase 2?" "Phase 3 is profit!" Good job, @$$hole.
And yes, he did like to talk about himself. In class. When we should have been learning about history, not that capitalism is evil. In case anyone is wondering what this man's life goals are, and I'm sure you're all foaming at the mouth to know, they are 1) to know himself (not to do anything worthwhile, but to know and understand himself), and 2) to teach one class at a university and spend the rest of his time reading on the beach (too bad our capitalistic society requires people to be productive to afford the beach-front property!).
Why was my comment deleted by an admin and how can I find out why? There was absolutely nothing offensive about it, no vulgarity, no violence, nothing. It even agreed with the author of the article and was much in line with most all of the other comments posted. Any help in figuring this out would be VERY appreciated!
Take care,
Cindi
I knew that Jayne Cobb was not just a brute, but a thinking-man's hired muscle.
I must say that I am floored by Adam Baldwin's intelligence and writing ability — truly rare among others who ply his trade.
Keep it up, Adam. I trust you are confident enough to espouse such heterodoxy to the faces of your liberal (statist) colleagues. The blank stares you get back from the unthinking drones must be rewarding in its own way.
Actually, to just argue devil's advocate here, Adam…
"…to challenge their non-compliances and violations". I've seen that with my nephew and niece when I saw them, and I've seen the same arguement… my sister-in-law brought such a complaint to a school board meeting, and they basically stated something along the lines of "The NEA guidelines are what we follow…"
(this was a high-school that used to be extremely good with working out complaints between teaching curriculum and the parents… ). The school boards (and very rarely have I seen a school board be elected, but rather appointed by govt. officials) have gotten so ingrained with bureaucrats and NEA 'yes-men' explain why schools like the one your earlier post mentioned and the Oakland school are the "exceptions" and not the rule.
My Bodyguard is one of my all time favorite movies (I was picked on in school, so I can relate). As to what Adam says about the public school system – he is right on the money. We homeschool our kids and every day when I hear how bad things are becoming, it makes me even more appreciative that we still have this opportunity.
You're being intolerant of Mr. "N-M".
He just didn't want his daughter to be "punished with a baby."
Darkwolf, if you and your wife can homeschool, I highly recommend it. My husband and I have homeschooled our son for 7 years now and our daughter for 4. There is some effort and time involved, but it is so worth it in the long run.
Is the pie ready yet?
Fantastic editorial, Adam!
My friend told me that his son's school (public, of course) had a day where they turned everyone's name Spanish!
Angered, my friend asked the superintendent if there was going to be a Constitution day, or something that makes sure they understand the principals on which their own country was founded.
There were no plans for anything like that.
Thank you!
Those are excellent additions!
You, rock, Adam, onscreen and off (great article!). I have to gush just a little and say how much I loved your Jane character on Firefly.
Adam Baldwin = Hope for Hollywood.
In California Constitution Day ceremonies and observances are required by Education Code (law). This is what I'm talking about. Wherever your friend's school is located, tell him/her to look into state code and school policies regarding things like this, and file a formal complaint, complete with the superintendent's refusal.
That'll wake 'em up!
Apparently enough to be deleted for some reason, though I have no idea how to find out why. I agreed with Mr. Baldwin and didn't post anything that could be considered offensive. I guess it was someone's way of saying "welcome to BH, lurk more" maybe.
Cindi,
Try addressing your question @ the Tips & Feedback link up there on the right side of the page. Someone should get back to you.
More or less agreed, Adam. No one political/religious point of view should be taught in school. In the UK, we were taught the factual parts [like history dates, chemistry, maths and geographical features, for example], but I'm grateful that in the humanities, there was room for debate. Especially in further education. Plus my mother was certainly strong willed and her own firm opinions, but I was positively encouraged to seek out or weigh all the available evidence and come to my own conclusions. I'm reminded that someone not a million miles away was known to write, 'Follow the money'. In recent months with the banking and allowances for members of parliament coming under scrutiny, it has proved timely. I also have faith in a Higher Power watching over and filling each of us.
Thank you so much! I do hope that someone will explain, but it sure will cause me to think twice before bothering to contribute anymore. I appreciate your help.
Well, that's why complainants have to be well-versed in Education Code and the policies that the school board itself codified. Use teir own words against them. And watch, stuff actually gets done, if you are patient and act in a reasonable and collaborative (non-confrontational/adversarial) manner.
For the record,
I think it was unnecessary for Geoff's comment to have been deleted.
Yet another great column Mr. Baldwin
Strangely it sounds like the area I live in, Brentwood TN. We've had many actors who've had children relocate here specifically for our schools. Most recently James Mardsen moved here wit his family so they could be in our school system.
Tip of the iceberg, IMO. A question that should be asked is why is the (public) school environment prone to "indoctrination" by the teachers? I believe it is because there has been a shift in the goal of teaching; rather than teaching children HOW to THINK, teachers now teach children what to repeat.
Schools, nowadays, seem so afraid of failing students because it may lead to consequences like less funding or loss of accreditation. Teachers teach material that will "help" the students pass standardized tests. Since children are no longer taught how to think for themselves in the school environment, there must be something to fill the void. This goes back to what you were saying, Mr. B.
I also think that many parents have checked-out of their children's education, allowing "indoctrination" to proceed and ending up in generations of people who don't really know about the world (despite learning multiculturalism and social justice, etc).
You know what my public school teachers taught me about standardized tests? "If you don't know the correct answer and you have to guess, pick 'B' because it's the most common answer!" They effectively taught us how to cheat our way through tests when we didn't know the material. To this day, I still test well. It doesn't necessarily mean I know the material any better than the person beside me, but I know how to take a test and pass with a better grade than he can.
I don't know about you, but that's not the sort of thing I want my children to be learning in school. I want them to actually learn the material.
As much as we view popular culture as horsewhipping us into moving left we can negate that influence by stopping the indoctrination that is going on in our schools. Unfortunately that is easier said than done given the teacher's unions essentially own the Democratic Party who in turn keeps them steeped in a job they can't lose, lifetime benefits, and great pay for what is ultimately a seasonal job. In turn the teacher's unions do all they can to program the next generation to vote Democrat. How can you break this death grip? It is another sacred cow wherein every time you question it you are viewed as an animal who "doesn't care about children" when we only question the status quo because we do care.
I didn't say I was a pacifist – I just drew a distinction between the beliefs of a large portion of the student body and the conclusion Anti tried to draw. I wasn't making any qualitative judgments in the least.
Ah, the man they call Adam.
Your posts are always insightful and well-argued. I appreciate your taking the time to write about things that matter. The issue of teacher indoctrination isn't quite as prevelant where I live than in other states – though those on the left would argue that. My state has voted Republican in every single presidental election for decades, and for the most part, we were taught to go to our parents for advice and help in personal matters, unless the parent was the cause of the personal problem.
However, the more I hear about these incidents, the more I'm willing to consider home schooling as an option for my future children. While I believe in equality for all human beings, treating others with kindness, and especially to read and learn about both sides of an issue, there's such a thing as taking it too far to the other extreme. If we're so concerned about offending somebody that we don't tell the truth, what good does it ultimately do? Isn't that more harmful to society than possibly offending somebody by what we have to say?
Dan, don't know if you watched Law & Order last night, but your yellow "Don't Tread on Me" identifier was used for one of the crazy, paranoid anti government websites. I thought of you
….and then i thought…"they ARE watching us" . Too bad, theyre not reading our comments. They could likely learn something
I went to a Catholic grade school and it gave me even as a child a sense of self worth and value that only a religious based education, where the individual child is taken care of and understands his or her role as a good citizen and human being. When I went to public high school it was different but not that vastly different. That was in the 80's. We sang more religious music in our choirs than they did at our private Catholic schools. The problem is the infiltration of progressives. There are people out there, of low IQ, and even lower self esteem who have become administrators and teachers who want to teach this type of mediocrity is best kind of thing. Thats where the garbage of Global Citizenship comes from. Mediocrity. These are mediocre people who couldn't make it anywhere else but the education system. The way we fix it? End teacher tenure. How is that done? Education should be a market based commodity. This is something the NEA hates because they know the public schools cannot compete then. But it would solve the bigger issue which is educating our kids to be good Americans and to really understand who they are and the blessings they have been given.
Well said Sir. It is nice that you are not in hiding like so many of your counterparts in HollyWood, afraid to speak common sense and patriotic values. I really would like to see you writing more of these types of articles or perhaps even a book. You do your country a service. Thank You.
Thank you for another great post Mr.Baldwin. Reading this makes me realize just how vital it is to be involved in your child's education. Parents must know what's going on in their childs classroom so that they will be able counter the non-sense that liberal teachers will spew. My little girl starts kindergarten this fall and I am at once scared and excited. Scared that she will be used by the teacher to advance some twisted liberal notion, excited to be there to refute it. They can only succeed in brainwashing your children if you let them.
Thanks again Mr.Baldwin. My wife and I are big fans of yours and we support everything you do. Congrats on "Chuck" getting renewed. Looking forward to your next post.
BRING BACK FIREFLY!
Teach your kids at a young age to respectfully ask their teachers what the teachers' favorite arguments against their own points of view are.
"Teacher, what's the other side of the coin?"
Self-refutation is a virtue.
"Intellect loses its virtue when it ceases to seek truth and turns to the pursuit of political ends." — Robert H. Bork, "Slouching Towards Gomorrah: Modern Liberalism and American Decline"
My wife is an elementary teacher in the Peoples Republic of Austin. Our son is only turning a year but I already told her if our son does end up going to public school I will be spending evenings and weekends deprogramming him. He will not be allowed to participate in "Earth Day"-like events and such.
Good for you. As the husband of a teacher in Austin I could tell you stories that would make your blood boil. It's all about inclusion….to the detriment of bright kids that WANT to learn. Everyone has the right to feel good regardless of whether you disrupt class or hold everyone else back.

Back in 2002-03, I did a brief stint as a choir teacher at a middle school in Ashland, Oregon. VERY liberal . . . Ashland fancies itself "Berkeley North". One teacher proudly displayed a class project in the hallways: the students had written and illustrated their own pledges of allegiance (keep in mind that this was less than a year after 9/11). Every single pledge, save one, was a pledge of allegiance to the world/earth/globe. The single pledge to the USA was a biting, cynical commentary on commercialism — something along the lines of, "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the malls for which it stands, one dollar . . . " This same school had a winter solstice labyrinth the kids could participate in (meditate while walking through a pine-bough/candle/incense spiral, in the center, the kids were to put a piece of paper with their "wish for the world", which the teacher said she'd take home and ceremonially burn so the wishes could "go out into the universe"). But when my choir sang "Silent Night" at the "winter music program", it was received with gasps and suspicious looks, and a few parents who secretly thanked me for having the courage to include a traditional carol.
Truly, the world has gone insane.
As if "Chuck," "Firefly" and his support for wounded veterans weren't enough reasons to love Mr. Baldwin, we now discover that he's also a gifted essayist. Something tells me folks of Baldwin's bent are a rare commodity in Hollywoodland …
As much as I hate to write this Mr. Baldwin….could you please drop the acting and go run for office somewhere? Pretty please with sugar on top. I'd love to see you in a debate with any progressive on any topic. You have a keen mind sir, I'm glad it's on our side.

I love Jayne. More and more each day…
Well done, Adam, but I expect Jackboot Janet/NEA/ACORN, et al, are preparing to burn you at the PC stake for your blasphemy, heresy and anti-party tendancy. Absolute compliance with the current party line (dosen't matter what it is, only that you comply) and orthodoxy to our now mandatory single state religion is required, you should know, and dissidence is a disorder/crime that is verboten. I fear you'll need a number of "I am spartacus" associates, although there is a possibility Obi's thugs will simply crucify them all. Keep going.
God bless you, Adam Baldwin. Thank you for speaking up, especially given your industry.
While we kids were growing up, my father turned down the thermostat, made us put on sweaters, planted a garden the size of a football field, canned veggies, composted in the woods behind our house (ok, dumped lawn clipping, rotting veggies and weeds), made us wear hand-me-downs, limited our gas money, recycled the glass pop bottles, made us eat leftovers. Back then he was called CHEAP. Now he'd be a greenie. I asked him what he'd prefer to be called. Yes, you guessed it. CHEAP.
Thank God Mr. Adam isn't one of those Baldwins.
(next in line after Joan of Argghh to swoon…ok, cheeks flushed – is it hot in here?) I'm better now. Yes, our Public Education system (translation: government schools – is there a constitutional conflict of interest here?) is abysmal. I know about the second income, but it certainly isn't going to any cushy lifestyle. Here's how the game works:
1) Ceate and control a bloated state and federal indoctrinational-er, "educational" system that costs almost twice per student what a far superior private education costs.
2) Make sure it is costly enough that the taxes drive both parents into the workplace to support it.
3) While the parents are busy trying to make ends meet, spend up to 8 hours per day "teaching" their kiddos to be good little worker bees-er, sorry, "citizens-taxpayers".
4) Create a self-perpetuating system that is continuously creating the means to support itself as it grows ever more powerful and bloated.
5) Kiss true education goodbye.
Secular Humanism as practiced and taught in the public schools eerily fits any definition of "religion" out there.
I agree that Homeschooled kids are a national treasure in these perilous times for Liberty. However, they will have legions of state indoctrinated voting zombies to overcome in order to have any effect.

Y'all do realize that those are the same tenets of the "mainline Protestant" churches? I work for a PC(USA) church in a conservative area. 90% of the folks in this church vote Republican. But they've done what so many have done and stopped paying attention to the "politics" and turned a blind eye to what is said by the denomination in their names. New ordination "standards" just barely failed, but because the clergy are the main voting members of the Presbytery, this area voted FOR these "standards". Most haven't a clue and don't want one.
All of that to say, [1] we (Conservatives) have gotten so focused on Presidential politics and stopped noticing the local/state levels. Next thing you know Red State has become Blue. and [2] As long as the colleges/Univ stay lefty, they will spit out lefties, who will teach/preach lefty-ism. The youth become lefties and parents wonder how it all happened.
Sigh… Thanks for the article. Peace and strength to homeschoolers!

I would love to read that one.
Today class, I present the syllabus for our use of the scientific method to prove Global Warming is really caused by man.
Step 1. Define the question
Does man cause Global Warming?
Step 2. Gather information and resources (observe)
We will watch "An Inconvienient Truth" and speeches by celebrities.
Step 3. Form hypothesis
Man does cause Global Warming!
Step 4. Perform experiment and collect data
Step 5. Analyze data
Step 6. Interpret data and draw conclusions that serve as a starting point for new hypothesis
Well, we just know its true because Al Gore, President Obama and the UN all agree that it is true.
Step 7. Publish results
Make drawings of dying polar bears for you to take home and put on your fridge.
Step 8. Retest (frequently done by other scientists)
We already know its true so this part is not necessary.
Totally agree with what has been written. My husband and I have 7 children, and the last two we have pulled out of a "really great" school district. Well, I have had18 years to see the changes that have occured. We have found a great hs community that emphasizes teaching children and young adults about the Constitution and the Founding Fathers.
I agree, be involved. Talk to your kids. They REALLY do want to talk to you, no matter what you may read that tells you the opposite. They want to know that you care about them and that everything will be ok, even if you do not believe it yourself. They need to know that you love them and will always be truthful.
The sixth grade text in CA in our district has a quote from Aristotle encouraging public education, so that all will learn the same thing and that a private education is a bad idea. I'd give you the full quote but I turned in the books Monday. We are leaving the hs program in our district and joining a charter.
Thanks for the great article, maybe we will be able to develop leaders for tomorrow yet.
Each meeting, the dean of my college reminds us faculty that we need to teach "global citizenship" and each meeting, I walk out, back bristling and think (can't say, oh no, that would be career ending) "I defy thee". So, to sow "student led" dissent, I make my students read Diogenes the Cynic's view of global citizenship. When they realize that the idea is ages old and entails living stateless in a rubbish-bin, they start to see the insanity of the very idea. Then I teach the more Aristotle and Plato than they ever thought possible while fingerpainting about "global citizenship" and "multicultural justice" in high school. Though BH is home to some (justified) anti-academic rants, trust that there are a few of us on the right in the Academy, you just don't hear from us because we are busy teaching, not donning purple latex fetish gear to emphasize "otherness" at the MLA.
I don't watch much TV but? I think I'll take their choice as a compliment!
That was funny Joan, I did not understand your comment the first time I read it, when I returned I read Libray Lady's comment, then I understood it. Duh?
Thanks for addressing this Mr. Baldwin. Our internationally adoptive daughter has run into this very issue in her high school ESL class. With only being in an American school for two years, our 16 year old has been told some amazing things, such as Conservatives believe people need limits or they would do bad things, and Progress is not always good because people can't ever be perfect and progress has unintended consequences. She was told that what liberals believe about happiness/nature is- "it is possible for people on earth to find happiness by using reason and living in harmony with nature. Nature( including human nature) is good because it follows rational laws" and what conservatives believe on the subject of happiness/nature is-"They will always be fighting between people so you can't ever make everyone happy". So her question to me was why wouldn't you be liberal mom, you can be happy then! Needless to say, we were not happy!
Sadly, the public school situation seems to be one of two scenarios- either we educators have no control over what the district wants us to teach, or we have too much control. In my situation, I have very little say over the fact that my literature classes are being stripped of all literature and changed into ACT-based English classes. I actually felt a little guilty for slipping the kids "The Crucible" when we were supposed to be doing practice tests. Once upon a time, I dreamed of opening up kid's minds to all types of writing styles and genres. I wanted my students to learn how to think critically, so once they got out into the world, they could evaluate it for themselves. I'm forced to "teach the test" now.
Sorry, I never know if they are allowed or not. I also don't get email notifications anymore when I get replies.

I think if you truly want an understanding fo what the word sustainabilty means to the left you should read the works of liberal science fiction writers. I remember one story (I am sorry I forget the book and author) where it was explained that the earth;s population was limited to 1,000,000 people and everyone had to live underground so that we would not "ruin" the natuaral ecosystems of the planet. The scary thing about the story is that this circumstance was accepted as "good" and "Normal". The story's plot twist was about something unrelated. IT was laden with tales of how "enlightened" the former masters were.
Exactly the reasons I pulled my kids out of school years ago. I was blessed to be able to do that (although we'd have preferred to send them to Christian school but couldn't afford it). Now, they are mostly self taught, and one is actually teaching at Cuesta College as he finishes his education. Gotta be careful with those 'free thinkers' though…sometimes they end up on FBI lists and now, possibly HLS lists! heh. Keep up the good work, too many people believe the lie that the 'schools know best'.
Meanwhile Johnny can't read.

Right on, Lola.
Also, I have a good feeling that Mr. Baldwin will be a big part of Big Hollywood as time goes on. It will be thoughtful, inspiring, and vocal people such as Adam Baldwin who will change Hollywood for the better; and in turn, influence the culture of this country in a positive way.
Thanks again, A.B.
Thank you elktwinmomma, this is indeed our intention; never letting the system get it's hooks into him. With my wife's training in the humanities (degrees in Literature and Sociolgy) and mine in engineering and science, we have the basics covered. We want him to be able to think for himself, not be told how and what to think.
Thank you Roland. I know it must be difficult for dedicated teachers like your spouse to work within the system and under its constraints.
I concur dcase. We both can see the battle that will be comming, and in many cases has already started. As of now, there is a solid support system for home schoolers in place and growing to help combat this.
Thanks tamzcam. Indeed, time and effort is all a part of being a real parent .
Mr. Baldwin…Thank you for your thoughtful essay. Statistics prove you right, right, right….We are unable to educate children. This week I read of a charter school that in its hiring requirements it stated, no multi cultural specialists, ultra liberal zealots, no college tainted oppression liberators need not apply……this school is turning out absolutely great statistics. American Indian Public Charter School, Oakland, Calif.

Amusing that you post this to a site that only allows articles by conservatives.
I'm just an awful person like that.
I know you get hundreds of comments on these articles, but regardless I wanted to add my voice.
I deeply appreciate the fact that you are taking the time to write these articles and show that the entirety of Hollywood does not have their heads "Where the sun don't shine". Especially on this topic. I was (Just finished) homeschooled myself, and always, (Especially on reading these articles) am thankful that I was able to.
Keep up the articles, and know that alot of people appreciate the fact you don't try to hide being a conservative.

just to let you know, it looks *really* bad when you delete any comments that seem to disagree with your point of view. We can still tell there were people disagreeing, due to the others replies. You should encourage free speech, not hinder it.
Baldwin, I love you on Chuck. I just never knew you were playing yourself. You're really off the deep end.
Public schools engage in "suppressing and/or demonizing varying, skeptical viewpoints"? Really? Like what? If you say intelligent design, I will laugh in your face.
"Statist canon like “social justice,” “global citizenship,” environmental “sustainability” and “multicultural education” are now pervasive in American schools, but are not sustaining captive young minds."
I copied and pasted that, and then kind of stared at it, 'cause I'm pretty much speechless. First of all, what does "not sustaining captive young minds" really mean? If you mean to say that our culture has created children are too stupid, lazy and self-obsessed to care about things like social justice and environmental sustainability, well, you're right — but that's not what you're saying. You're saying, it seems, that environmental sustainability and social justice and knowing about other cultures are things that should be optional in people's educations. I say that they already are, and to the detriment of our society.
Public school is not about indoctrination, no matter how much conservatives seem to be trying to make it about THEIR indoctrination while crying wolf about that hilarious old adage of liberal indoctrination.
Being a global citizen, to me and many others, has nothing at all to do with the whole world becoming one big country (although if it was a good, free country, would that be so bad?). It has to do with acknowledging that you live on the same planet as everyone else and working toward everyone having a decent shot at the same kind of lifestyle that you enjoy as a relatively wealthy American.
And I don't mean that everyone should have a chance to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps," because we have a lot of people in this world who are too poor to have bootstraps.
Our schools SHOULD teach us to be global citizens, because it's our job, as the people with the means to go out and do something, to help other people who weren't lucky enough to be born into United States citizenship.
It's worth noting here that I believe that America is the best country in the world, but that doesn't mean it can't get better — much better. More importantly, I don't want America to be the best country in the world. I want all the countries in the world to be the best countries in the world. And if I send my kids, if I ever have any, to public school, that's what I want them to take away from that.
So I guess my question, Mr. Baldwin, is what do you want?
