Are You Artists or Propagandists?
by Alvaro AlvillarCount me as one of the proud, independent and struggling painters who will not be a shill for the current administration. Let me make it clear — the NEA and artists who take orders from Obama’s henchmen are nothing more than shills for one of the most corrupt administrations this great nation has ever seen. It’s one thing when artists make political art out of personal conviction, however misguided or ignorant we may be, but to be put into the service of the White House propaganda machine in return for grants and/or other considerations at the expense of already over-taxed Americans is despicable and dangerous.

When did artists in this country decide it was a good idea to take marching orders from the government? Did I just wake up in some third-world country from a long sleep or am I having a nightmare where I go back in time to Mao’s China, Stalin’s Russian or Hitler’s Germany? No such luck — this is actually happening here and now and some of you artists are too stupid to figure out you’re being had. Wake the $%@# up! Always question the powers that be! The only “change” that has taken place are the faces in high places. Politicians have an agenda-first, last and always — but make no mistake — these guys are worse, much worse!
Today’s liberals are the art community! From galleries, curators, critics, authors, film makers, musicians, actors, bloggers, magazines, publishers, collectors, directors of art institutions, museums and alternative art spaces to the artists themselves-most are already in lock step with the liberal ideology that has been a long standing tradition. That’s why the conference call between the White House, the NEA and the other artists was an easy call to make … literally. They invited Patrick Courrielche to sit in on the call — too bad for them but great for those of us who care.
In Hollywood, actors and others learn to keep their conservative opinions to themselves if they want to work-I get that! It’s the same thing with conservative visual artists like myself, no matter where we live. That’s why I put out my A Call To Artists video. I wanted to let my fellow artists know they are not alone. What I don’t get is how so many of these artists can be so easily swayed? Are artists truly as talented and intellectual as we have been led to believe or are we the recipients of our own praise and largess at the expense of the little guy we pretend to respect and care for so much? Who is pulling the strings? How many hoops do you have to jump through before you begin to understand that you are not an artist if you are not free to express yourself as you see fit. The artist formally known as Prince understood that and made his choice. I like his art/his music-but right now I really admire his stand.
I known first hand about wrongly being labeled and how much more difficult that makes it to earn a living. I also know what it’s like to be shunned by my peers. What I don’t get are the conservative artists who have had great success and are still hiding in the shadows. How much more money, fame, success do you need to feel safe enough to speak up and what does that say about the state of fear we already live in? What are you afraid of and where are your priorities? Here I must thank Mr. Jon Voight for having the courage to speak out. You, sir, are a man!
Have established artists not figured out that if you don’t speak out and stand up for your rights now you can kiss your freedoms goodbye, along with everything you have earned and worked for your entire life? And don’t worry about who gets what when you’ve passed on. At this rate it will belong entirely to the state. Hell, a lot of it already does!
How much more proof do you need to believe that this has been going on for a long time now — this current administration has just shifted to light speed! They’ve been watching, listening, studying and learning, especially from their mistakes. They have been patient and are now fully entrenched. They believe this is their moment and that they cannot let it get away — so anything goes!
This is not a sparring session, this is the championship bout, the final round — winner take all and “We The People” better come out swinging!!!

Bravo!
I see prominent signs planted at road/infrastructure project sites stating that "Your tax dollars are at work!"…why not require a VISIBLE/AUDIBLE label on all NEA FUNDED projects?
Art instead of substance.
Obama doesn't want to start an art war.
One of the hallmarks of great artists is their questioning of authority. Now, in America, we have more "artists" as profession than as expression. Unwilling to subject themselves to the suffering and struggle that brings about greatness, these "grant" artists are simply pimping for a wage.
It is good to know that there are artists out there whose independence and integrity mean more than the all-mighty dollar used to control…and have the ability to reason and question. Without questioning, one is nothing more than a submissive slave.
I used to love LA. But not being the kind of person who can keep his anti-liberal sentiment hidden for long the social scene narrowed into seclusion. So choosing to be seclusive versus being a sell out comes with a price. Thankfully I don't give a flying f**k about the entertainment biz. I don't know how you guys do it but BRAVO.
Anyway bailing out of So Cal was great. But imagine my dismay when I got to Maui only to find it LITTERED with Berkeley and Santa Monica liberals. WTF!!!!! WTF!!!!!! WTF!!!!!!!! WTF!!!!!!
Oh well. I love my dog. He's cool. Maybe you guys can start throwing some Pro-Breitbart parties.

Could not agree more Mr. Alvillar!!
Wow, so painters really do exist.
Great idea! Dare to dream! LOL
Artists are happy to take government money whether it's Bush or Obama. The only difference of course is they're happy to take marching orders from Obama too.
AS a unionman i identify totally with this blog i was harassed belittled an black balled because i thought naively so that i could say "maybe we shouldn't b arguing this way about iraq'' [along party lines]now keep in mind i didn't say we couldn't argue about the issues just that we needed to understand what the facts are. I'm still in that union an worry about being caught writing on this blog , i didn't become a fan on Sarah paline fan on facebook because of whom might find out about it its frighting out here. P.S. most of those who came after me are still working I was one of the first to b laid-off ill probably the last 2 get a job what a great union o an one of the reasons my health care sucks is because my union could only had three options an couldn't go out of state boy thank god 4 Obama fighting against the evil insurance industry an all those employees that feed thr kids with those jobs.wake up libs
Stand firm Alvaro! Knowing how the Administration treats is opposition, you are probably about to go through quite a $%@# storm…I am sure your courage here has emboldened one of your sister or brother artist to stand firm with you! You've certainly inspired me to take my game up a notch! Thanks!
Excellent! It's about damn time some one put this thought into clear concise words!
Good piece. Interesting little details in your artwork too!
Very good article!
To answer your rhetorical question: They are propagandists: “SPRECHEN SIE PROPAGANDA? WHY THE LEFT LOVES LIES” at http://firebreathingchristian.wordpress.com/2009/...
Propaganda…it's what the left does, needs and loves.
I have been published at least weekly on a regular basis since 1978. At first, to get into "the game" I had to go along with the "ruling class" (art is more of a social organism than a business, at first, anyway) and I was free to give them what they wanted within their boundaries. Within 6 years I was on my own, and business was quite good. Very good. But five years of being out on my own produced a moderating, and then conservative slant to what I do. I offended the "old bosses" and literally overnight 3/4 of my business evaporated. I suppose that I could have gone hat in hand to the NEA but getting a handout seemed simply like admitting I was a failure at what I do. So I did what I needed to do to remain independent and here it is, 2009 and I have survived 20 years without the damn government or the damn "old bosses" who hold the reins on artists. To be free you have to be independent.
Nicely said. I found this article (blog) inspiring. Thank you Mr. Alvillar!
What really gets me is that there is no shame in any of these people at the NEA or ACORN. They KNOW they've betrayed the American people, they KNOW they've broken the law in some of these cases. Yet the "leaders" of these organizations have no problem stepping in front of a microphone and spouting outright lies to cover their arses.
Right to our faces!!
They have no shame, and no decency…..
Honestly, the NEA was bound to do this sooner or later. Government grants for artwork has only one logical conclusion. That artists are buying what the NEA is selling though…I was suprised. I really shouldn't have been.

Dave Rooney , I have worked in Hollywood as a independent filmmaker since 1980. I know exactly what you went through out here in the Valley of rejection in the wonderful land of the intolerant. I made a 35-mm feature narrative film that honors and pays tribute to our Vietnam vets and I was blacklisted by Hollywood because I didn't show my guys raping, killing innocent Vietnamese, or create the illusion that Vietnam was one big Mai Li massacre on a daily basis. Plus I made a reputation for not taking crap from distributors who wanted to rape me and I am suppose to be grateful for their generosity. Since I am a conservative filmmaker that gets in their faces and I refuse to walk away from my goal of getting my film out into the public arena. I have been treated like an outcast and have lived in seclusion as you have. So I can relate to your experiences. What we conservatives MUST do is to stop looking at the studios, "the mob" for validation, funding and hoping if I sell out they will bless me with fame and fortune. I have have never worked in the 'bubble' I don't depend on them to feed my family. I have a piece of equity and I am selling it directly to the public who are buying my product. All we need to do as conservatives is to find a funding source of conservative investors that are fed up with how Hollywood is urinating on the American public and we pay our hard earn money to sit in theater and be lectured by the likes of Sean Penn, Geo Clooney, Tim Robbins, and Oliver Stone. Why are we giving these malcontents our money and our time? These losers are telling us how to live and what is right and wrong to or kids. We all need to band together in a Brotherhood of conservatives to take back the pop culture which was ours in the 60s. We need to support films that promote conservative values. My film has just been reviews by Movie-Guide and it will be posted up this week if not next. I am very proud of the review, its a beginning, every DVD I sell is a victory for all of us. Some people here know me, others do not. I have been dragging my film around like a dead body for twenty years and I won't stop until I achieve the goal I set out for myself and this film back in 1988. We as conservatives MUST stop looking for the NEA to help us or the studios to green light a pro American film. You have to understand the world we live in. We are like lepers in Hollywood, outcast we can sit here and get pissed of or we can fight back and get in their faces. The leftist malcontents that run Hollywood refuses to allow any of us out there to play in their sandbox. Unless you keep your mouth shut and never publicly voice your support to any conservative case or candidate. Look what the mad dog animals did to Miss California all because she told the truth about her ideals on marriage. Well, excuse all of us all the way to Hell that agree with her. We either band together and get in the faces of these amateur fascist or they win. I have been fighting for twenty years with my film and I will never give up until I have achieve my goal, then it will be my turn to have some fun in this land of illusions. We conservatives can make our own sandbox, we can make our own FILMS real narrative films, not documentries that are only shown at film festivals. I am talking narrtive films that expose the sick leftist religion and bring it down to its knees. These people are BEGGING us artist, filmmakers, painters to make FUN of them. People are too busy thinking about a deal with a studio that won't hire you to clean the bathrooms on a studio lot. Go after them, expose their religion as the farce it is, show the world that these malcontents that crawled out of the mud in Woodstock threw away a free lunch called America by asking for change. We can take this country back, I know I am doing it one DVD sale at a time. I have done over 75 radio shows since Jan 09. I am making headway into major talk shows and its only a matter of when I get on FOX and open myself to 40 million Americans who love this country. You must remember these Americans, they were Mel Gibson's audience that saw THE PASSION. If Mel can do it so can we on a small scale and work our way up. I have seen this down, I have done it myself at the AFM level of filmmaking. We have to support filmmakers with conservative ideals and find the funding so we can practice our trade on this one sided playing field.
message from Fearless Leader…
There is NO difference between Art and Propaganda. All good art is propaganda glorifying The State. Anything else is reductive, bourgeois trash unfit for the New People.
Repeat when necessary.

Of course he doesn't. He doesn't want any resistance. That's why he and his ilk are trying to train your children "properly". Just watch. They will be targeting your children for the next 3+ years in an effort to induct them into their private army. Read the fine print in all the "comprehensive" bill they try to pass and you will be sure to find all kinds of boards, committees, and Czars/advisers to research, instruct and decide how to better convert our children to their way of thinking.

BRAVO!! I am sick of hearing the opinions from the liberals in Hollywood and those artists who fawn over any progressive that runs for office then give voice to their politics. Its amazing how they preach tolerance and diversity yet blackball anyone who disagrees with their political views. I applaud all of you who stand firm in your beliefs! Any way for all you conservatives in the entertainment and arts to network with each other? I would be more than happy to give my support and patronage to you. Its time we organize as a community and support those entertainers, artists, writers, etc who do not have progressive liberal ideals. let your voices be heard. there are many of us that will listen and support you from all over America.
Those two lines are really, really, really, really creepy. This has happened so soon after Bush, you have to wonder if this hasn't been planned for years. Sort of like the stimulus bill is a collection of liberal pet projects accumulated over that last 20 years.
I understand you do most of your work in a visual medium, but when writing, paragraphs are your friend.
Just do our eyes a favor and hit the "enter" key every once in awhile.
I know too what a union will do if you are fool enough to speak your own mind. They screwed me over fter 17 years on the job, because being a republican, I refused to let them use some of my dues for electing democrats.
must punish, must crush, the union will give you your opinion, so you better like it or else.
The compassionate left, the working mans party,.. what a joke. it's about fatcat union bosses with their own private jets, and class war politics, God help us that they are anywhere near power, they will abuse it.
that is what unions do,
Yes, you can make a difference-buy are stuff, see our films, go to our shows and so on. What we lack most is the patronage you speak of. In my case, there are no galleries (that I know of) that show our work, so we show it ourselves-out of our homes or we rent space with what little money we have. That's fine-but if we're going to really start making a difference and let other artists know they can stand up with us-we need the publics support. Maybe the talk radio shows can start talking about us instead of always giving free publicity to the artists they can't stand!
Good job Alvaro. This was a very well-written article and I applaud your dedication. Knowing you as a peer, I relate to the personal nature of this issue on many levels. As Conservative artists, we share many of the same frustrations and experiences with intolerance and aggression from the art community. As parents, we struggle to balance time with our families against the passion to produce art and the burden of being unrepresented.
As you know, I am on a full-scale mission to create and promote a Conservative art movement. I am not only interested in promoting myself, but anyone who will actively participate. I too, bemoan the lack of support from Conservative artists who have achieved success. However, I will not prostrate myself to them any more than to the Progressive agenda. I know from my experiences, particularly the recent 9/12 March on DC, that Americans are fed up with government and the cultural institutions of America. They are looking for an outlet for their philosophy and emotions, and I am prepared to give them a voice.
Anyone who is interested in helping me achieve a full scale campaign for Liberty and Conservative philosophical art should contact me at frances@machinepolitick.com
Also take a moment to look at my work and feel free to comment http://www.machinepolitick.com I am already working with Alvaro to promote our work on a local level – now we need your help to take it to the national platform and advance our fellows in creative Liberty. We cannot achieve our goals without patronage and encouragement from the Americans for whom we are making a stand. Thanks to everyone for their positive comments and support of Alvaro's work. He is a talented painter who deserves recognition.
Great piece Alvaro! That Arts and Crafts workshop you cherished so much in prison actually paid off (relatively speaking). Me thinks you could actually use any and all kinds of help, even if it's from 'those' commie bastards . . .
Thanks Frances-I'll see you soon!
If you've been hawking your film for 20 years it's probably unwatchable.
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!…stop…you're killing me…HA HA HA HA HA HA!
Hey, break down and buy the DVD and then you can see for yourself. I am an indie filmmaker not MGM. But then again, your response has been typical from people who have a different point of view.
Dear Old Tom…. LOL you know , I never even notice I did that . Thanks for the reminder.
ALWAYS love your country, NEVER trust your government…
Great article. Your words are as passionate as your art.
Interesting that there is not a single dissenting "comment' here; a little selective editing at work?
I'm always amazed that those who are most loudly braying "Freedom" are always speaking of the freedom to oppress via economic exploitation. Do you honestly believe that the roll of creative people/artists is to hysterically scream about the evils of "Big Government" while (tacitly or explicitly) enabling the power of the corporation/right wing to rape the population?
I respect your right to Free Speech (do you respect mine?), but this blog is absurd; conservatives continue to hold virtually ALL of the levers of power in the business community, the media (The "Liberal Media" represents 5% of the total maybe) and the government (Obama and the modern Democratic Party is at best centrist.)
Artists HAVE always called power to accountability but your rant has no basis in reality.
Most excellent article. Thank you you brave artist!
Well said Alvaro.
I think you're not paying attention or maybe you are the "first" dissenting comment. We welcome everyone, especially dissenting comments because they do such a good job of proving us right.
Maybe their afraid they'll sound like you-"5% of the total maybe"-really? You get real!
I am running for Congress as an Independent. Therfore I need to gather signatures to gain ballot access. Many, many people will come to my booth at an event, and read my platforms, and tell me that they agree, and wish me the best, but they are union employees, and fear for their jobs, so they feel they can't sign my petition.
I hear you, you are not alone

Good for you. I have worked around and with various disiplines, from paint to theatre, and the truly happy artists are free to be who they are. The "art pimps" who exist to suck off the teat of the taxpayers, are an unhappy and sour bunch. When the real Americans gain control of our government again, the NEA needs to be defunded and disbanded. Only them will the community of the arts be free to express art in its purest forms.
Expound on your statements in the last paragraph, please. Where do you get your "facts"?
Artist will stand strong right after the book burnings and art burning ceremonies on the South Lawn of the White House. Just in time to catch the bus to go to a camp.
Absolutely right, Alvaro, the time to create work that truly reflects who you are is always NOW, not when the coast is clear. As if art is to be created only in a safe environment. Playing it safe in art is the most dangerous thing an artist could do to himself, to his art. And let's be clear about what these people who take government money really are, along with what kind of 'art' is to be expected from them: They're not artists, they're something else, something far less, but that doesn't stop them from having delusions of being artists.
Whoa ….what on earth are you talking about here. The exploitation subject of this article is that the oppressive tyrannical Obama administration is most definitely attempting to exploit artists for propaganda. I don't know of any "right wing" artists who are "enabling" corporations to rape the population???? What is that??? However I do see multitudes of "left wing" artists who continually mislead and live as hypocrites and slam capitalism ( a la Michael Moore) while raking in boatloads of capitalist money. You do have the right to express yourself, at least for the moment until the new FCC diversity guy gets his mitts on you. Anyway, this NEA thing was no surprise to me. I have some seen some very mediocre artists trying to milk the system to prop up some really stupid art with left wing propaganda just to get the grants flowing. This Obama administration incident is just a blatant example of what goes on in the NEA every day. They just got caught with their hands in the cookie jar….and you don't like it, do you! Centrist???? OMG, are you way off the planet. I guess if you call Communism centrist…in your vocabulary? You might want to rethink that.
True Art enables exploration for the mind and the soul and does not have any need to preach to them. I would argue that despite many great works of Art having ties with political implications, that the politics themselves are coincidental and irrelevant in the greater scheme of what is and is not Art; Michelangelo's David is one such famous example where David may be seen to represent Michelangelo's own city state of Florence standing up to a much larger hegemony surrounding it and especially to the Medici dynasty. For a sculptor such as myself and one who also does the occasional flatty (painting) I can honestly say that I have never made a work of Art that is politically centered or even charged. Such a thing would simply not occur to me as being valid in the true "Art" sense. I do however admit that I have a certain fondness for paintings of the American flag and may do my own rendering at some point.
