Happy Flag Day
by Alvaro AlvillarI painted my first American flag in 1997 after viewing Robert Hughes’ PBS series “American Visions” about the history of American art and its coming of age in the fifties. This left me wanting to see Jasper Johns 1954 flag painting so much that I got up the next day, headed to the library, returned home and wound up painting my own flag. I have painted the American flag numerous times since and will continue to do so.
In 2001 I wanted to create a work of art that would fuse Jasper Johns flag and Andy Warhol’s 32 Campbell Soup Can paintings titled “Choices” with a little Ed Ruscha thrown in for good measure. The soup can paintings were all identical except for the flavors on the cans and that’s what I would do to my Johns inspired flags. All identical, as much as you can make thirty-two separate paintings, except in this case, instead of flavors, each vertical flag painting would have an almost invisible word at the bottom.
The words would be made up of 16 couples or opposites. It would be a glimpse into some of what we’re made of without judgement. There would be love on one painting and hate on another, as well as war and peace, black and white, rich and poor, hope and fear, young and old and so on. However, two things would happen that would put them off for awhile: 1) a horrific display of all that’s wrong with the world and 2) all that’s right with the world and why we keep trying.
On the morning of September 11, 2001, the phone rang-it was my landlord. He called to say that the property and the building my wife and I rented had been sold and we would have to make plans to move. When we finished our conversation, I hung up the phone and turned to see and hear Katie Couric interrupt whatever she was involved in at the time to announce that “a small plane” had struck one of the buildings of the World Trade Center, that’s how I remember the moment.
The rest is history and in comparison and on reflection, moving would be the last thing we worried about for a few of weeks. We started to get back to our own realities and we started to get ready to look for and buy our first home.
I can’t remember when it happened, but during this time, my wife would wonder and we would find out that she was pregnant. Long story shorter, my beautiful boy would be born on June 14, 2002, and someone close to me that day would ask me if I knew what day it was? Of course I knew, I said, it’s the day our son was born – and he said, ”Yeah, and it also happens to be Flag Day today…isn’t that awesome?” Yes, it was!
It would take two years to complete “Choices” and every piece of wood would be cut outside and put together in the back of my truck, from the panels for the paintings to the raw wood that I would build the frames from. It was a labor of love and I believe well worth the effort.

I hope someday people who get the opportunity to see them will understand that I tried within reason to make a piece that will inspire. I know some people will find fault with its premise, that we are who we are, good and bad. It is my belief that my country is still the greatest nation on this planet and it’s my intention to be on the side that will continue to defend what our founding fathers fought for and created.

the Flag means nothing to me. Since Nov. 4 08, the American people elected a person who would not wear a flag on his suit. That means the flag now stands for nothing at all with the founders of this nation. It is more in common with Cuba. The flag represents Castro not the USA of old. I will and have not flown the American Flag since Nov. 08. Its a Scarlett letter anymore. It represents the ignorance of the American people.
The flag hasn't lost its meaning …the newly elected POTUS never really understood the meaning of our flag and its obvious by his actions/inactions, words and deeds. The Flag's meaning hasn't changed …we just have a President who wants to "change:" it …but Americans aren't about to give up everything that our flag stood for in order to be slaves to the socialistic, progressive, Marxist whims and follies of the Obama administration.

Sorry you feel that way. I'm glad the founding fathers didn't give up so easily.
Your piece is very inspiring and I love the idea of the almost invisible words at the bottom of each flag. What a great idea! To show what we are all made of, good and bad. It's called reality and you found a way to make it beautiful. Congratulations for a very powerful piece of work.
Thanks for the post, Alvaro! I enjoy seeing your artwork here and wish I could see it in person.
The flag will be here long after Obama is gone. Our duty is to be faithful to the flag and "to the Republic for which it stands" regardless of who is currently at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
June 14 is also the birthday of the U.S. Army. Happy birthday to our flag and those who keep it flying.
I think it's more than that now. Our flag strikes emotion in everyone whether it's love it or hate it. George Bush was right when he said "You're either with us or against us…" It's sad that people born here take for granted what we have. They can't see that we represent hope for so many. Why is it always second or third generation immigrants that want to change our country to be what their parents left? My mom used to have a phrase that I think fits with the left "Misery loves company."
Our flag stands for freedom, freedom of speech etc. freedom to choose even it's someone that we might not be happy with..We all have that freedom so let's put it to good use the next time it's time to vote.
Unlike some others, today (as on most days) I am proudly flying the American flag. It doesn't represent the Obama administration, or any other administration for that matter. It represents The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution. It represents the greatest republic in all of history. It represents the Founding Fathers, and those who fought to end slavery once and for all. It represents a nation that has twice rescued freedom in Europe by being the major force which brought down murderous regimes. It represents a people who stood steadfastly against the plague of communist dictatorship, sometimes nearly alone. No Barack Obama can change that, no matter how hard he may try. He can never disgrace the flag, only himself. Obama is here today, gone tomorrow. That flag forever in freedom will wave. Happy Flag Day!
I second that. **applause**
What a creative piece….. of crap
Thanks for your absolutely useless opinion. Will you be expanding on your genius later?
Me Too!!!
Great to see both of you here and on a side note – Andrew…I never took your comment (past post) wrong!
Thanks to everyone else that have also commented on my work, especially the words of encouragement.
Alvaro: Your work is a fine combination of patriotism and creativity. I love that combination. And say happy birthday to your son for me.
@ultra – why give up on the Republic just because those who now run it don't stand behind the ideas that gave rise to it? Buck up man! Now is the time to all the more display Old Glory as a statement of what the 47% of the electorate who did not vote for President Firefly believe in.

Very powerful, with the black backdrop to the flag.
Alvaro, thanks! Actually, it's great to see you here! Thank you for contributing. I always love your work — it's very creative and thought provoking, which I think is what art should be! And I think you're posts are always interesting. Great job!
P.S. I saw your response… don't worry. I just wanted to make sure I hadn't offended you.
Seconded!
This reminds me of that recent Gut by Greg. I wish that everyone that hated it could somehow be traded for someone dying to get over here. Guarantee you that in less than a month they would be begging for their citizenship back, and would be a lot more appreciative of what that flag stands for.
Beautiful. I love the art and what it represents.
Nice piece! I’ve always liked Jasper Johns, “American Flag,” and your is very cool as well, “happy flag day, and happy birthday to your little one.”
Ricky Ross = the future
Damn Lawhawk I feel like standing up and saluting, well done. Hey guys.
You're a Grand Old Flag
by George M. Cohan
You're a grand old flag,
You're a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You're the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.
Ev'ry heart beats true
'neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there's never a boast or brag.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

My favorite flag painting is Emanuel Leutze's "Washington crossing the Delaware" circa 1850'..ish. It's the perfect flag, not overt or demure, just plain old there in the scene. Your flags accomplish this same spirit of neither hubris, nor false sense of shame as a lib would portray it and I salute you both as an American and fellow artist for a job well done..
I don't get why the black man diidn't like the flag for the past eight years and now suddenly he's patriotic?
I do get you art Alvaro.
